RC: Emirates Palace is now ten years old. What continues to make this property such a unique experience and how does it maintain its position as one of the best hotels in the world? HS: Ten years ago Emirates Palace was built as the vision of Sheikh Zayed, the father of the nation, who wanted to have a hotel representing the United Arab Emirates and the hospitality of Abu Dhabi. He achieved a lot of success over the last ten years. Not only with state visits by with puing ourselves on the map and staying there. Now, the next couple of years, obviously, once you are in the position of being one of the best hotels of the world you need to think of how do you keep this role. Obviously we are only going to keep it with consistent service, with an upscale product and with a warmth in our service which I hope every guest who comes to Emirates Palace will find. RC: How important is the luxury traveller to you hotel? What luxury experiences do they have while staying here? HS: I think staying at Emirates Palace is a luxury stay per se. The luxury travellers, obviously, is quite important to us, since it is a fact of life that the average rate in Emirates Palace is a lile bit higher than in most other hotels in the city or in the UAE. So it plays a vital role in the life of Emirates Palace. But I also must say being able to serve the luxury traveller also gives a lot of satisfaction to me and to our staff at Emirates Palace. RC: Talking of luxury, you have the gold leaf camel burger on your menu, which must be a truly unique item. How did this come about?

EMIRATES PALACE HS: It certainly is a unique item! Not only for Emirates Place, but for the region; given that we at Emirates Palace were looking for a signature dish, some signature drink. For example we have the palace cappuccino with the gold on top. The camel burger has 24 carat gold, and by the way only 24 carat gold is edible, is one of our signature dishes which we have invented as something special which represents a bit the region and goes very well along with our palace cappuccino which also has a 24 gold crust on top of the cappuccino and it sells very, very well. It is something unique, and you can hear people talking still years aer they had been at Emirates Palace about the cappuccino or the camel burger. RC: I have also noticed a high number of Chinese quests going through Emirates Place while we have been here. Is that an important market for you? HS: The Chinese guest, the Chinese traveller, certainly is an important market for us. It is the upcoming market. It is a market which helps not only in the overnights stay. A lot of Chinese guests also come to visit the palace; to have lunch, to have dinner here, while staying somewhere else. But it makes us quite proud to still be seen as a beacon of Emirati hospitality in parts of the world where we were not well known, as in China. RC: With such an impressive ballroom and varied meeting spaces, is the MICE industry a key target market for Emirates Palace? HS: The MICE industry certainly is a key market for Emirates Palace. Having one hundred acres or one million square metres here there are so many things people during meetings or incentives. There is the ballroom, you mentioned, and we have an auditorium for 1,200 people, a 1.3 kilometre beach, a football pitch, four tennis courts, I could name endlessly. The usage of all the facilities obviously is required and we enforce it, and therefore the MICE business is certainly big business for us as well. RC: Can we talk about your relationship with the Kempinski brand? What value does that add to the hotel? HS: Kempinski, being the oldest independent European hospitality group, from 1897, adds a lot of European hospitality. I believe a lot of other companies they have their own route, they have their own origins in parts of the world, but being European we believe that we understand luxury. Coming from, if you talk about luxury cars, luxury fashion, luxury leather goods; most of it is actually situated or has its roots in Europe. So, we believe we can add something on for the luxury traveller and on the luxury hospitality market with our European roots and the long history we have. RC: Your award-winning spa has plenty to offer. Can you tell our viewers specifically about the 24 carat gold radiance facial, which won the title of World’s Best Signature Spa Treatment at the World Spa Awards last year? HS: Yes, it is one of our, well, the signature treatment in the Emirates Palace Spa. It is one of the most popular ones, using some kind of nano-technology and, of course, you fell a bit like Cleopatra having all the gold on your face. It is a quite a unique experience at a price which is still

affordable, of around AED1,900. It is something somebody really could experience, or can experience while he or she is staying at Emirates Palace. RC: Emirates Palace is surely one of the most photographed hotels. Today you see every guest with their own devices, taking and sharing images across social media. How much of an impact does social media have on the hospitality sector and what is your strategy for social media as a hotel? HS: I believe social media is a part where it plays an overwhelming role these days. I believe is does depend on the age groups as well. However, we are monitoring, we are taking part in the social media and I think it will become more and more vital in its role and I think we have to accept this fact. Until the social media came up we were prey much in control of what we are spreading to the world. With social media we are not in control any more, well, not only in control any more. I think we have to have the right people, with the right tools, not only as Emirates Palace, but anybody in the hospitality industry, to get the best out of social media for your own product. RC: Are you concerned by the number of new hotels opening up around you here in Abu Dhabi? Or is Emirates Palace in a league of its own? HS: On one hand Emirates Palace is certainly in a league of its own; on the other hand I would lie if I said I was not concerned. On one hand, every new hotel which comes into the area, comes into Abu Dhabi, helps to promote Abu Dhabi. On the other hand, the hotels which are around us, they also have beds to offer, they also have good service to offer, they also have another five, six, seven restaurants which would also like to have the guests. At the end of the day, we are all competing for the same part of the cake. However, I believe with the iconic Emirates Palace building, but also with the service we are delivering, that we don’t need to be afraid of any competition around us. RC: Talking a lile bit more about Abu Dhabi as a destination. What keeps the visitor numbers up and what makes Abu Dhabi different from the likes of say Dubai or other Middle East cities? HS: I think Abu Dhabi has a lile of the peaceful life. If I go to Dubai I am a lile stressed out until I come back. Abu Dhabi has a lile more the peaceful life. Abu Dhabi has a lot to offer from the beaches, in the support for the hospitality business, and also for the traveller from Abu Dhabi tourism and the authorities. These are great beaches and Abu Dhabi is also defining itself as a cultural hub in the Middle East with the upcoming openings of the Louvre, the Guggenheim and so on on Saadiyat Island. I think Abu Dhabi is diversifying itself as destination distinct from others in the region. RC: So plenty to experience both in Emirates Palace and in Abu Dhabi as well. Thank you so much for talking with Breaking Travel News today. HS: You are very welcome, thank you very much. LUXURY REDEFINED

Steel Hammer

University of Gnawa

STEEL HAMMER New York University • 8-9 February

The legend of John Henry, deeply rooted in Appalachian folklore surrounding the construction of the American railroad, has existed in many variations and forms – from illustration to tall tale, political polemic to popular song. Steel Hammer, the latest collaboration from composer Julia Wolfe, SITI Company, and Bang on a Can AllStars, creatively explores the subject of human vs. machine and the cost of hard labour on the human body and soul. Based on hearsay and recollection, and culling from vibrant American oral traditions, Steel Hammer incorporates lyrics and music by Julia Wolfe and text from four remarkable American playwrights—Kia Corthron, Will Power, Carl Hancock Rux, and Regina Taylor. Directed by Anne Bogart, performers take on wooden bones, mountain dulcimer, step dancing, and more as they explore the human impulse to tell stories and this quintessential American tale.

This weekend-long celebration of global sounds mixes roots and modern and local. The Maghreb meets West Africa in University of Gnawa’s intoxicating hybrid with unstoppable choruses and emotional flights of improvisation. Seymali’s hypnotic grooves meld traditional Mauritanian instruments with electrified psychedelic rock. Aziz Sahmaoui brings together his musical passions — gnawa, rock and jazz— in a globetroing collaboration with high-flying Senegalese experimentalists. LUXURY REDEFINED

Working life of a supervisor butler Abu Dhabi Emirates Palace • 60 butlers (among 2,000 employees) • Might not sign off until 10pm and have to be back on duty by 6am, in time to supervise room service delivering a 6.30am order.

66

• The hotel runs 24-hour shules to the staff village, 15 minutes away, but they sometimes stay over • A butler looks aer 4 rooms/suites at any one time. • About 20% of guests – generally, surprisingly, British – want their cases unpacked or repacked.

This is not only a stupdendous but a thoughtful hotel. In the morning, copies of the Financial Times and 3 local newspapers hang outside my door in white, reusable bags. My butler personally accompanies a waiter bringing my 6.30am wake-up tea. I am in the gym as it opens, and use various Technogym bits, and a big white Pilates ball, before running round the pool at this end of the building (the entire hotel is so long that it has gym, and outdoor pools at both ends, with an Anantara spa at the west end). Aer showering, using the Hers, of course, I get more exercise from the 750-yard walk to one of the world’s best-ever and certainly biggest breakfast buffets, in Le Vendôme.

I sit outside, on the terrace overlooking the stunning, silk-like beach and the azure sea. I am brought justsqueezed juice, and a drinking straw in a paper case. The buffet’s many stations include one ten-foot table with both-sides spreads of baked goods. Another round table holds gluten-free and bio-organic breads, another has no fewer than six types of toasting breads, with easy-work four-slot toasters.  There are tables for dozens of fruits and cereals, and more yogurts than I knew were possible, and Arabic mezze and Chinese and Japanese specialties, and European cold-cuts and chafing dishes of hot things, plus chefs to cook-whatever. Everything is clearly, and correctly, labelled, in big leering.  And oh, the coffee, Maromas, surely one of the best labels ever. LUXURY REDEFINED

Mary Gostelow’s NOTES FROM VISITIN is this the best coffee in the world? Maromas, from a daily-cleaned WMF machine

Luxury as at Emirates Palace • heavy-card A4 gold-printed stationery with cut-out dome tops, and matching heavy-card A5 envelopes with cut-out dome edging to the lip • gold-covered notelets • superb breakfast coffee, and they ask if you would like another cup, in a fresh cup, just before you have finished it

68

• breakfast breads incl apple brioche, yummy nutfilled sliced for toasting • at breakfast, the rolling toaster is esconsed in a trellis-paerned cover • the breakfast buffet has whole sides of smoked salmon for slicing

• breakfast overall is notable for classical music, extensive buffets, gold-edged Villeroy & Boch china, and (Royal Warrant) Tiptree marmalade and jams • for breakfast in your room, the menu, in a hanging leather folder, is in Russian, German, English and Arabic, and offers 15-minute slots from 0600

• If luxury is space, you have it here. If luxury is a gold bath filled with sweet-smelling petals in the two Anantara spas here at this luxury hotel, you can tick off two more requirements.  Add to that, of course, Thai therapists who know what they are talking about. The illustrious past of the House of the Trident is clearly present in the genetics of the model, yet this GranTurismo also paves the way for future generations.

STILL WATERS RUN DEEP Despite its traditional GranTurismo silhouee, this centennial edition stands apart from its forbears. The new Rosso Magma colour was designed to achieve the appearance of motion, even when the car is stationary. Applied in three coats, the shade varies subtly depending on the light to reveal deep undertones of purple and blue: perfection at 0km/h. The alternative launch shade, Blu Inchiostro, represents a stunning visual reference to both Maserati’s home city of Bologna and its iconic oval emblem. Five further paintwork colours are also available, ensuring a truly personalised experience for every driver. AN EYE FOR DETAIL The centennial edition’s stunning selection of eyecatching exterior finishes is the perfect complement to the spirit of the model. The pearlescent red of the paintwork is partnered with an accent of colour on the large callipers of

the carbon ceramic brakes, visible behind the spokes of the MC Design wheels. This shade is offset by sleek black carbon fibre detailing on the rear spoiler, door handles and door mirror casings. Lastly, the unique Maserati Centennial logo proudly emblazoned on the hubcaps pays one last homage to one hundred years of innovative design. BEAUTY ON THE INSIDE The interior of the GranTurismo MC Stradale Centennial Edition rivals the exterior’s statement aesthetic. Visually striking accent panels on the headrests, armrests and steering wheel create a look that is as powerful as it is elegant. The sporty appearance of the interior is enhanced by carbon fibre inserts on the dashboard and seat surrounds, while the celebratory Maserati Centennial logo takes pride of place on the kick plate.

A SPORTSMAN AT HEART The GranTurismo MC Stradale Maserati Centennial Special Edition is powered by the 460 HP, 4.7 litre V8 that first appeared in the GranTurismo Sport, combined with a robotised, 6speed MC Race Shi gearbox that guarantees superb performance and a top speed of 303 km/h. This highly innovative engine is designed to adapt to the driving environment, emiing a discreet purr in an urban seing and powerful roar on the open road. A BESPOKE INTERIOR The headrests of this exclusive edition display an embroidered Trident as a visual reference to the iconic logo. Eye-catching features also include contrasting stitching on the dashboard and central tunnel, along with the Maserati Centennial logo that takes pride of place on the kick plate. Even the carpets have not been overlooked: their new coloured borders reflect the accent colour used elsewhere in the interior.

MAKING AN IMPRESSION As well as Rosso Magma, three more triple-coat colours have been created to celebrate Maserati’s centenary, each one matched to specific interiors: Blu Inchiostro, Grigio Pietra (with mica providing an interesting metallic effect) and Bianco Birdcage. Nero Carbonio, Bianco Eldorado and Grigio Granito then complete the choice of colours. models/granturismo/granturismo-mc-stradalecentennial-edition.html LUXURY REDEFINED

Abu Dhabi is a city on the move. Not content with enjoying one of the world's richest oil reserves, the region has recently thrown itself into a massive programme of development. And one of the jewels in Abu Dhabi's crown is the new 5.55kilometre Yas Marina Circuit, which on November 1, 2009, hosted the country's inaugural Grand Prix. It was also the first F1 twighlight race, with powerful lighting ensuring a seamless transition from day to night.

80

Located on the spectacular Yas Island, the track is set to revolutionise the design of future Formula One circuits. Boasting top speeds of 320 km/h and average speeds of 195 km/h, it features nine right turns and 12 le turns and is one of the few venues on the calendar to run in an anti-clockwise direction.

Designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke, Yas Marina has a waterfront seing scenic enough to rival the likes of Monaco and Valencia. And with the track wrapping itself around the island's glamorous newly-built marina, there's plenty of mooring space for the paddock's plethora of yachts. Its distinctive design also boasts several innovative elements including the iconic five-star, 499-room Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi hotel, which straddles the circuit; the 60-metre solar powered Sun Tower, which offers unrivalled views for invited guests; and a pit lane which sees the cars exit via a tunnel passing under the track.

Another world ďŹ rst is that all of the grandstands, including the massive hairpin seating area, are covered to protect spectators from the desert sun, whilst the state-of-the-art pit building boasts 40 air-conditioned garages. Luxuriant comforts and ďŹ rst-rate views are clearly the watchwords for Abu Dhabi race goers.

The track itself was designed with racing in mind. As well as the waterside marina area, there are high-speed sections (including the longest straight on the F1 calendar), tight corners for overtaking, and even a twisty street circuit-style sector. Overall, its diverse elements come together to create one of the longest and most demanding tracks in the world, where close and competitive racing is guaranteed. LUXURY REDEFINED

Why go? It’s hard to find a more spectacular seing for a Grand Prix than Yas Island, on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi. It’s home to numerous 5-star hotels and the Ferrari Theme Park, and the 5.55kilometre (3.45-mile) Yas Marina Circuit is a suitably glamorous addition to the FIA Formula One World Championship. The track has many unique touches. It runs alongside the island’s spectacular marina; it passes under the new 5-star Yas Viceroy hotel and alongside a new 60-metre sun tower. The exit of the pit lane even crosses under the circuit.

82

“It's a very impressive facility and the track layout is fun, so it's a great place," says Williams driver Felipe Massa. "With Ferrari World just around the corner, the race has a strong Ferrari flavour." Away from Yas Island, Abu Dhabi has lots to offer. It’s the largest and wealthiest of the seven United Arab Emirates, with a crude oil supply that isn’t expected to run out until the 22nd century. Unlike some of its neighbours in the Gulf, Abu Dhabi has retained its local traditions and charms, making it an enjoyable and interesting stop-off.

Did you know? Abu Dhabi is the world’s richest city. The average net worth of the 420,000 permanent citizens is US$17 million. Useful tips With the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix being near the end of the season, the weather conditions are not too extreme. Midday temperatures of between 25-30 degrees can be expected, but the grandstands are all covered - a ďŹ rst for a circuit anywhere in the world - so shade is easy to come by. LUXURY REDEFINED

84

Where to go? Abu Dhabi has a very cosmopolitan feel and there is something for everyone. There’s an eclectic mix of international cuisine to suit all budgets, starting at the Emirates Palace (for a time the world’s most expensive hotel) down to the cafe culture that prevails throughout the Middle East. For traditional Abu Dhabi cuisine, head to the area surrounding the fish market in Abu Dhabi city. There are plenty of other tourist aractions. If you want local culture, why not head to the camel market in Al Ain or the Abu Dhabi falcon hospital. And, of course, there is the aforementioned Ferrari Theme Park, covering 250,000 square metres and featuring a G-Force Tower, driving schools for children and adults, high-tech theatres and lots of cars on display.

From 2012 there'll be even more of an international flavour in Abu Dhabi, with the opening of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the first Louvre museum outside France. Where to stay? All the best hotel chains are in Abu Dhabi - and many of them on Yas Island - so you can expect to be looked aer wherever you go. Most of the F1 luminaries stay in the 5-star Yas Viceroy hotel, which is just a short walk from the F1 paddock. But for those looking for more modest surroundings, there are cheaper options available in Abu Dhabi city.

Extended stay Once you’ve checked out Abu Dhabi city, why not head out into the Rub Al Khali desert, which is known locally as 'The Empty Quarter'. Only a short distance from the city limits, you’ll find yourself surrounded by sand dunes. The town of Al Ain is another popular tourist destination. It’s regarded as the spiritual heart of Abu Dhabi, having been built on seven oases and inhabited for more than 3,000 years. It’s on the Tentative List of World Heritage Sites of UNESCO.

Enthusiasts only There’s plenty to see at Yas Marina Circuit, aside from watching Formula One cars. There’s drag racing and an off-road driving centre, and you can test your own skills at a state-of-the-art kart centre. If you think your technique needs some work, there’s even a driving school for you to aend. bi.html LUXURY REDEFINED

Yas Marina Circuit is an awe-inspiring experience for drivers and spectators alike, with a waterfront seing to rival the likes of Monaco and Singapore. The circuit is straddled by the Yas Viceroy Hotel and also features a 60-metre solar powered Shams Tower and a pit lane, which sees the cars exit via a tunnel passing under the track. Off-track, the entertainment throughout this event shows Abu Dhabi at its most glamorous. Among other things, live concerts featuring performances by major international artists, in the past have included Price, Jay Z, Muse, Beyoncé, Aerosmith, Linkin Park, and Paul McCartney to name a few, as well VIP parties for F1®’s top stars make this the uncontested social and sporting occasion of the year. Mr. Bernie Ecclestone, President of Formula One, has described the Yas Marina Circuit as “one of the most exciting tracks I have ever seen,” high praise for the venue of the first F1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix which was held on November 1, 2009. From the twisting Singaporestyle street sections to the Monaco-style marina, the Yas Marina Circuit serves up an array of driving challenges for the world’s best drivers. Soak up the action of the Grand Prix from the viewer-friendly grandstands or go for the more luxurious option of the Marina Hotel or alternative VIP hospitality suites doed around the track. You could also opt, with a nautical frame of mind, to view the Grand Prix race from your yacht moored in the iconic Yas Marina.

Richard Mille RM 07-02 Automatic Pink Sapphire Richard Mille’s success is founded upon three crucial elements: the best in technical innovation, the best of artistry and architecture, the best of the heritage and culture of fine watchmaking with hand finishing. From the very inception of the brand, Richard Mille endeavored to apply the techniques and materials found in the most innovative sectors such as in the domains of F1 racing car development and the aerospace industry to watchmaking, with the goal of creating an extreme timepiece, without compromise, without gimmicks.

Case The bezel, caseband and case back of the RM 0702 are made from solid blocks of Pink Sapphire. Sapphire is known as a particularly scratchresistant material with a hardness of 1800 Vickers. Created from crystals of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), its transparency is a result of the purity of composition. Creating a case of this quality took over 40 days of machining, including 430 hours spent pre-forming the case components and 350 hours polishing the caseband/ bezel/case back ensemble. Gems rotor with variable geometry Heavy external outside edge and heavy edge ring in 5N red gold - Ceramic ball bearing This rotor with variable geometry enables winding to be adjusted to the owner’s activity level. Adjusting the two weights, which can be slid sideways into the correct position and fixed in place by spline screws, modifies the seing. Inertia of the movement is optimal when the two weights are closer to each other, and the barrel rewinds more quickly. If the weights are positioned at either end of the rotor, the inertia is considerably reduced, resulting in the barrel winding more slowly. Free sprung balance with variable inertia This type of balance wheel represents the ultimate in innovation. It guarantees greater reliability when subjected to shocks and also during movement assembly and disassembly, hence beer chronometric results over time. The regulator index is eliminated and a more accurate and repeatable adjustment is possible thanks to 4 small adjustable weights located directly on the balance.

POWER AND CONTRASTS FOR A LEGEND IN MOVEMENT Like a burning fire born of an alliance between gold and titanium, the legendary Golden Bridge Automatic from Corum appears in a whole new light. Contrasts, transparency and an exceptional mechanism combine in this new interpretation of an iconic contemporary Haute Horlogerie model. Beating steadily at its heart is the spectacular and exclusive Corum CO313 caliber with its linear oscillating weight, set off to its best advantage by the metallized sapphire dial. Or what happens when history meets the future. In 1980, a time when conformism and caution were all too prevalent, Corum caused a major ripple in watch industry waters by presenting its Golden Bridge baguee movement. This incredible mechanical caliber defying the laws of horological kinetics had what it takes to go down in history. It did just that and ever since, not content with merely turning heads, it has constantly evolved, proving an ever greater source of fascination in its tourbillon version – and in 2011 with a spectacular automatic development featuring a linear oscillating weight.

98

Riding the same innovative momentum that le an indelible imprint on watchmaking almost 35 years ago, Corum now presents a new interpretation of its legendary Golden Bridge.

Combining the gold of a fabled movement with the titanium of a sleek, sophisticated case, the new Golden Bridge Automatic demonstrates the wide range of skills cultivated by Corum. From the mechanical complexity of its exceptional movement to the powerful design of a case in titanium grade 5 with black DLC treatment, the new Golden Bridge is a comprehensive expression of its multiple fields of competence. The new Golden Bridge Automatic in titanium – clad in a contrasting black color that admirably highlights the gold movement – plays the alchemist with the theme of transparency by revealing a subtle architecture. From this 360° transparency when the watch is not worn, it turns opaque once secured to the wrist, which is duly hidden from sight in order to enhance the magic of an exclusive linear mechanism. The secret of this fascinating orchestration lies in a striated metalized decoration on the sapphire crystal case back. This stunningly transparent architecture creates a play on perspectives, alternating hiding or revealing the exterior elements of the watch. Made of gold like the movement itself, the hourmarkers applied on the sapphire dial accentuate the overall depth effect, while the openworked hands lend a light, airy touch.

Beating at the heart of this fascinating set of optical effects is Corum’s exclusive CO313 caliber, an automatic linear-winding baguee movement. Equipped with a platinum linear oscillating weight along with a slipping spring mechanism, this mechanical masterpiece beats at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and enjoys a 40hour power reserve. The 194-part movement also features a variable-inertia balance – a guarantee of long-term high precision – and a miniaturized barrel designed to avoid disrupting the resolutely vertical nature of this model. The mainplate and bridges are in 18K red gold, adorned with a finely hand-craed vertical guilloché motif providing a delightful visual accompaniment for the linear motion of the oscillating weight. Reflecting a confident, self-assured nature, the new Corum Golden Bridge Automatic comes on a black crocodile strap fied with a titanium pin buckle bearing the Corum key, and is water-resistant to 30 meters. thrill of their lives. We have completed 50 per cent of the construction of Flying Aces and are simultaneously working on other rides and aractions to launch in 2016. We have made a complex roller coaster emerge under our red roof in less than a year, an amazing achievement, especially when we take into consideration that most other theme parks take approximately 3 years to deliver a similar feat.” Due to its exceptional thrill features and strong connection to Ferrari’s heritage, the first plane themed coaster is also the first of five major rides & aractions to be launched as part of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi’s massive expansion. Already home to the world’s fastest roller coaster ‘Formula Rossa’, the bi-plane themed coaster represents the latest addition to the Park’s offering. Flying Aces brings to life the story behind Ferrari’s Cavallino logo, inspired by Italy’s ‘ace of aces’ Count Francesco Baracca. We are confident that the new rides and aractions will satisfy our guests thirst for family excitement and white knuckle thrills.” The Park recently launched Karting Academy for guests to challenge one another in electric powered go karts, and for the lile champs, an allnew Junior Training Camp has been enhanced with a so play area and a winning mix of climbing activities. In addition, guests finally have the chance to drive the dream aboard a Ferrari California with the brand new Driving Experience, offered for the first time in a theme park.

In 2014, the Park revealed to the world its extraordinary expansion plans that will add more rides and aractions to appeal to guests of all ages. The innovative offerings are expected to increase the Park’s overall capacity by 40 percent, reduce waiting time and enhancing the overall guest’s experience. In regards to the expansion, Jesse added: “We are very proud of our expansion’s progress to date and how close we are to achieving our goal. There LUXURY REDEFINED

THE MUSEUM AMONG MUSEUMS – LOUVRE ABU DHABI Heir to the century of Enlightenment and the French Revolution, Musée du Louvre stands since as the "museum among museums”; as such its name is a synonym of excellence in the museum field. Musée du Louvre was created in 1793 in Paris, and it is one of the oldest and largest museums. The museum hosts 35,000 works of art drawn from eight departments; Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Near Eastern Antiquities, Egyptian Antiquities, Islamic Art, Paintings, Sculptures, Decorative Arts, Prints and Drawings. The museum's collection covers history of mankind from antiquity to 1848. A museum for all by virtue of the sheer variety of its collection, Musée du Louvre further highlights its universal reach via diversity of its 10 million annual visitors and an ongoing effort to make

144

contact with the widest possible French and international audience. Musée du Louvre is commied to share its name and values with Abu Dhabi through an exceptional and innovative project, based on the transfer of centuries-old experience and expertise in museum management and curatorship.

Wandering in the museum The central display will be concentrated with relevant and revealing works lining one unique path – the principal route via which visitors will navigate their way through the museum. The journey proceeds chronologically with different civilisations developing in parallel as visitors move forward on a journey through time. This display features four major periods: Archaeology and Birth of Civilisation; Medieval Days and Birth of Islam; Classical Period from Humanism to

Enlightenment; and Modern and Contemporary Art, starting at the end of the 18th century. Visitors will be invited to study the works themselves, compare them, and delight in their unique qualities and meanings. A variety of textual and multimedia resources in multiple languages will place artworks in context, explain where they come from and relate rich histories of the objects and artworks. The central display will be complemented by a full programme of temporary exhibitions. These will amplify the message of the museum’s galleries, inviting cultural loans and exchange from institutions all over the world. LUXURY REDEFINED

SAADIYAT ISLAND GUGGENHEIM ABU DHABI Currently in development The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be a preeminent platform for contemporary art and culture that presents the most important artistic achievements of our time. From its location in the Middle East—a central axis between Europe, Asia, and Africa—the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will contribute to a more inclusive and expansive view of art history that emphasizes the convergence of local, regional, and international sources of creative inspiration rather than geography or nationality. At the same time, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will acknowledge and celebrate the specific identity derived from the cultural traditions of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates, as well as other countries in the Middle East. The museum’s collection will encompass art in all mediums produced around the world from the 1960s to the present day, and will be a catalyst for

146

scholarship in a variety of fields, chief among them the history of art in the Middle East in the 20th and 21st centuries. A dynamic program of changing exhibitions will explore common themes and affinities among the work of artists across time and place. Commissions created specifically for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection will reinforce the museum’s commitment to working with artists and supporting contemporary artistic production. Architecture The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, designed by Frank Gehry, is an experiment in inventive 21st-century museum design. The building defines a new approach to the museum visitor experience and presents an innovative vision for viewing contemporary art in the context of a desert landscape. Currently under development, the new museum will be situated on a peninsula at the northwestern tip of Saadiyat Island adjacent to Abu Dhabi in the

United Arab Emirates. Surrounded on three sides by the gleaming waters of the Persian Gulf, the building site also serves as a manmade breakwater configured to protect the island’s pristine north beach zone. Inspired by expansive industrial studio spaces, the museum design reflects the large scale at which many contemporary artists work, and presents new gallery layouts unlike conventional museum spaces. Clusters of galleries in varying heights, shapes, and character, allow for curatorial flexibility in organizing exhibitions at dimensions that have not previously existed. Evolving from several main cues, clusters of galleries connected by catwalks center around a covered courtyard. Additional vertical clusters of galleries pile on top of the central circulation creating a combination of vertical and horizontal spaces for exhibition organization. The design also incorporates sustainable elements appropriate for the region, including natural cooling and ventilation of covered courtyards derived from the concept of traditional wind towers found throughout the Middle East. The National Museum of the UAE, telling the story of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, his unification of the United Arab Emirates, the history of the region and its cultural connections across the world.

The Falconry and Conservation Gallery will focus on Sheikh Zayed’s appreciation of the natural world, its conservation and preservation, as well as his passion for falconry. Originally developed as a means for surviving in the desert, falconry has evolved into a mean of life.

On entering the Zayed National Museum, visitors will embark on a compelling journey into the culture and history of the UAE, and the story of Sheikh Zayed – the UAE’s father and continual source of inspiration.

The Sheikh Zayed Library encourages visitors to take their learning about Sheikh Zayed and the UAE a step further. In the library visitors will be able to examine historical and cultural sources and explore various interactive media.

Sheikh Zayed: Life and Times is the museum’s core gallery, tracing the life story of Sheikh Zayed and his unification of the UAE. Seminal moments in the intertwined histories of man and nation will be brought alive through photographs, national treasures, key documents and personal effects belonging to the late ruler.

The core values of Sheikh Zayed introduced in the lower floor galleries will be continued in more detail in the upper floor galleries. The Land and Water Gallery explores the way the region’s natural resources were used, cultivated and traded in the past. Sheikh Zayed recognised

the importance of preserving the nation’s environment, building a framework to ensure that a similarly sustainable approach is followed today. The People and Heritage Gallery focuses on the traditional values that have been at the heart of UAE life for centuries and underpin the UAE’s political and cultural life today. These values, embraced and cherished by Sheikh Zayed, include an emphasis on the importance of human relationships, warm hospitality and living in rhythm with nature. The History and Society Gallery charts millennia of human selement in the region. Using archaeological evidence and historical records, the gallery traces the area’s history from Stone Age peoples dwelling in the area 200,000 years ago, to the creation of the modern state by Sheikh Zayed.

The Science and Learning Gallery uncovers the way that Sheikh Zayed’s passion for education transformed a society based on traditional knowledge to one where literacy and numeracy are available to all. Visitors will also discover the influence that Arabic disciplines of language, literature, navigation and medicine have had on the rest of the world. The Faith and Islam Gallery explores the crucial role of faith in Sheikh Zayed’s life as the driving force behind his humanitarianism and vision for the future of the nation. The gallery will provide a contemplative space where visitors can discover more about the history, practice and central place of Islam in UAE daily life today. LUXURY REDEFINED
