THE BLUE TRAIN

WELCOME ABOARD THE BLUE TRAIN. YOUR UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE IS ABOUT TO BEGIN…

LUXURY RAILWAYS As time meandered from the 19th Century towards the dawn of the new era, a dream was born. A dream of harnessing steam technology to link Africa’s vast south to north, around the aweinspiring mountain ranges that dot the continent, through the apparently arid desert landscapes, over untamed savannah grasslands teeming with wildlife. From the Cape all the way to Cairo... all of this on parallel lines of tempered steel. It is from this dream that The Blue Train was born. Cairo was never to be, but the dreamers

persevered and The Blue Train now traverses South Africa and its breath-taking scenery in a manner that befits the mystique that has grown around it. Kings and presidents have indulged on this magnificent, moving five-star “hotel-on-wheels”. From love-struck honeymooners, to adulated celebrities. And even ordinary folk who romanticise about a life of spectacular luxury, a life that has seemed tantalisingly out of reach. www.bluetrain.co.za

LUXURY WATCHES

ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL MILGAUSS

THE OYSTER PERPETUAL MILGAUSS, THE WATCH FOR THOSE WITH A PASSION FOR THE WORLDS OF SCIENCE AND DISCOVERY, RECONCILES STRONG MAGNETIC FIELDS AND CHRONOMETRIC PRECISION.

| 10 |

Instantly recognisable The reliability and precision of an ordinary mechanical watch can be affected by a magnetic field of 50 to 100 gauss. But many scientists are exposed to much higher magnetic fields during the course of their work. Rolex’s solution was the Milgauss, created in 1956, the first watch of its kind. Hence the name of the watch, mille being French for thousand. Rolex uses 904L stainless steel for its steel watch cases. 904L is mainly used in the high technology, aerospace and chemical industries, where maximum resistance to corrosion is essential. A superalloy, 904L is extremely resistant and highly polishable. It maintains its beauty even in the harshest environments.

Z-Blue dial Green sapphire crystal marked a first in watchmaking when it was introduced on the Milgauss in 2007. Now this crystal is combined with an electric blue dial, an allusion to the emblematic lightning-bolt-shaped seconds hand. The design, development and production of Rolex bracelets and clasps, as well as the stringent tests they face, involve advanced high technology. And, as with all the components of the watch, aesthetic controls by the human eye guarantee impeccable beauty. The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function. First introduced in the late 1930s, this particularly robust and comfortable metal bracelet with its broad, flat three-piece links remains the most universal bracelet in the Oyster collection.

The Milgauss is equipped with calibre 3131, a selfwinding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. It incorporates stateof-the-art technologies patented by the brand that ensure exceptional resistance to magnetic fields. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 3131 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with all Oyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.

Chronometer. This exclusive designation aests that it has successfully undergone a series of specific final controls by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, in addition to the official COSC certification of its movement. This unique testing of the chronometric precision of the cased-up movement, as well as of the watch’s waterproofness, self-winding and power reserve, pushes back the boundaries of performance and makes Rolex the benchmark for excellence in mechanical watches. The green seal is coupled with a five-year guarantee which applies to all Rolex models.

Anti-ageing wearables: The future skincare devices to keep you looking young

Hyper-personalised and fully interactive, it's no wonder that the beauty industry is excited about wearable tech that monitors and improves our skin. Research by Mintel has identified bespoke, ultra-customised beauty as one of the hoest trends in beauty between now and 2020. These days, we want skincare that is precisely tailored to our needs and beauty companies are falling over themselves to launch ever more individualised products. And there is the potential for an awful lot of money to be made. While the global wearable tech market is set to treble in the next five years with a projected turnover of $34 billion by 2020, the antiageing market – predicted to enjoy a super-healthy annual growth rate of 7.8% – is expected to be worth a staggering $191.7 billion by the end of the decade.

L'Oréal's UV-detecting patch

>>

Botox, fillers and industrial-strength chemical peels, make some space. Poised to hit the mainstream later this year, skincare wearable tech is the latest magic bullet to add to the anti-ageing arsenal and it's coming to a beauty counter near you.

When it comes to anti-ageing, protecting skin from the damaging rays of the sun is prey much priority number one. "Most signs of skin ageing are a consequence of UV or sun exposure," says Tamara Griffiths, a consultant dermatologist at Salford Royal NHS Trust. In fact, a whopping 80% of skin ageing can be aributed to UV exposure according to a 2013 study published in the medical journal Clinical, Cosmetic And Investigational Dermatology. Keeping tabs on your UV exposure and knowing exactly when to slap on the sunscreen could make all the difference to your complexion later on in life. Enter L'Oréal's My UV Patch. The product was developed by L'Oréal's Technology Incubator Research and Innovation division, a US-based team of 25 scientists headed by cosmetics genius Guive Balooch.

their brands. Fendi follows with a boutique hotel consisting of seven luxury suites hidden discreetly on the third floor of Palazzo Fendi, the brand's flagship store in Largo Goldoni at the end of Via Condoi. Downstairs, the store covers two floors of the 17th-century palazzo and has been completely remodelled by French architect Gwenael Nicolas to add energy and light. In a nod to the brand's historic origins it even features a fur atelier where clients can step inside and watch the experts at work. "It's a game-changer, an emblem and symbol of our DNA," says Pietro Beccari, Fendi chairman and CEO. "There is no other place where you can so easily understand our very precise, very personal vision of luxury." The third-floor hotel was designed by Italian architect Marco Costanzi, who has used beige and grey tones to create a sleek but subtle ambience. The suites range in size from 35 to 60 square metres and offer stunning views of the street action below. Up above on the fourth floor Rainer Becker's upscale Japanese restaurant chain, Zuma, has opened its first Italian location. The hotel suites feature custom-designed furnishings from Fendi Casa including beds, sofas and side tables, but there are also Jan Katz carpets on the natural oak floors and each room has a Giò Ponti mirror. Reversible televisions can be seen from the living room or bedroom, while the bathrooms are filled with blood-red Lepanto marble and white travertine. "This is a home experience for a sophisticated traveller," Marco Costanzi tells Gourmet Traveller. "This is not a business hotel. When you enter from the ground floor you have a different feeling."

Mercedes-AMG E43 4Matic revealed

AMG, as is the case with its cars, doesn’t hang around; the new Mercedes-Benz E-class was only revealed in January 2016 yet a high-performance version – dubbed the E43 4Matic – has just been unveiled. There’s no dull, downsized four-cylinder diesel under the bonnet, either; instead it features a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol V6. MercedesAMG claims it outputs 396bhp and 384lb ,
