Thank you all for joining us here this weekend as we bring the World Golf Awards to La Manga Club for the first time. Our Gala Ceremony has grown over the past four years to become an industry benchmark in Golf tourism and it is our honour to welcome you here in the Costa Cálida, Región de Murcia, in southern Spain.

Aer months of preparation, this is an exciting time for myself and the international World Golf Awards team as we develop our role as the leading global initiative to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in the golf hospitality industry.

We have a host of global leaders in aendance this weekend; some are new faces, while many are returning friends. Many thousands of votes have been cast for the best golf courses, tour operators, and hotels during the build up to tonight’s event and this evening we will see who has emerged victorious.

Located in a magnificent natural environment next to Calblanque National Park and the Mediterranean Sea, with a mild year-round climate and enjoying exceptional security and privacy, I am sure you will agree the exclusive resort of La Manga Club is the perfect place for us to gather this year. La Manga Club Celebrates its 45th anniversary

a Manga Club celebrates its 45th anniversary with the same philosophy that it had at the start of its journey: to offer a destination with magnificent surroundings that epitomises and unites exclusivity, leisure and sport, with an extraordinary climate throughout the majority of the year and exceptional safety and privacy conditions, providing unique experiences and service of the highest quality. This momentous occasion for the complex coincides with the concession of his Majesty the King’s title of ‘Real Club de Golf La Manga’ (La Manga Royal Golf Club), a title that only golf clubs with 25 years or more of existence have the luxury of being granted.

The most recent of these has been that of La Manga Royal Golf Club, a title that puts the finishing touch on the commemoration of 45 years’ worth of history on the settlement, for which a variety of activities are scheduled with the motive of celebrating the anniversary, such as discounts of 45% on different services, competitions on social media with a different prize every month etc. But this has not been the only recognition received by the resort over the last few months. La Manga Club has recently received one of the most prestigious awards in the tourism sector, of the World Travel Awards, known popularly as the Oscars of tourism, by winning the prize for the Best Luxury Resort and Villas in Europe for 2017, as well as the Best Spa Resort in Spain.

The history of the complex dates back to 1972, when the golfer and Californian businessman Gregory Peters invested in the construction of this complex. Constructed in less than 11 months, it was a pioneering resort in Spain for being exclusively dedicated to golf. La Manga Club was the first Spanish resort to open two golf courses at a time in which this sport was practically unknown in the decade of the 70’s around the area and, nevertheless, since its beginning has been situated among the finest in all of Spain. From then on, 45 years’ worth of history have passed and now this achievement is being celebrated with the aim of continuing to provide a unique experience in this incomparable resort for a long time to come.

“Even as a golf pro, I have always taken an interest in fashion both on and off the golf course, so it seemed a natural progression for me to go into the fashion world,” says Hurdy, a smart dresser with well-tailored aire. “In fact I have been dressed by William Hunt of Savile Row, London, in the past and I soon realised that looking smart means playing smart.”

Sunningdale’s Old Course was designed by Willie Park Junior and opened in 1901. It was laid out in the last days of the guy ball, over a mixture of hills, heath and woodland that had hitherto not been considered as suitable for golf course construction. Urns containing fourteen iron-age Skeletons were excavated during its construction. The course was considered extremely long and its popularity owed much to the development of the Haskell ball, initially imported from the United States. Willie Park’s design was considered revolutionary at the time, and within a few years Harry Colt, the Club Secretary, had modified several holes and drastically altered others.

sunningdale neW Course Sunningdale’s New Course was designed by Colt and Morrison and opened in 1923, on heathland including small copses and broom. The first five holes were more or less as now, although the track of the first and eighteenth holes had to be reversed. Colts sixth hole played down the line of today’s ninth hole, though along its le hand ridge to a green over the path down to Valleys End and the Brickmaker’s Arms. Holes 7-10 were hilly and in today’s woods right of the tenth hole

Muirfield Village Golf Club was the dream and work of Jack, in association with Desmond Muirhead. The land was acquired in 1966, but construction did not begin until July 28, 1972. BeTHPage BlaCK Course The Black Course is a difficult and challenging course that should be played only by low-handicap golfers.

The course is for walkers only and its slope rating is one of the highest in the northeast. Anyone who has played will tell you it is a true test of golf skill and physical endurance. This was one of the last courses designed by master golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast, and is said by many to be his finest work.

The Black Course served as the site of the 102nd U.S. Open Championship in 2002, and again at the 109th U.S. Open in 2009. The Barclays is scheduled to be played here in 2012, adding another major event to the list played at Bethpage. The narrow fairways, high roughs, well placed bunkers and small greens help to make this an extremely difficult course. It regularly ranks among the best courses in the country.

Golfweek rated it the #1 best municipal course for 0910, and again in 10-11, and it made their list of the top 100 classic American golf courses. It also made the Golf Digest's top 100 American public and private course list in 2005, and was number 7 on their Top 100 American Public Courses. Golf Magazine included it on their Top 100 Courses in the World, and ranked it 10th in the Top Courses Since 1959. In 1910, the membership incorporated as Bellerive Country Club, naming the club aer Louis St. Ange De Bellerive, the last French commander in North America. That same year, Scotsman Robert Foulis designed the “new Bellerive” in Normandy where the club remained for 50 years.
