2018 FIFA WORL

EVERYTHING YOU NE The festival of football that only happens every four years is set to kick off in a maer of weeks. That's right – the highly anticipated 2018 FIFA World Cup, a tournament that brings together the finest footballers on the planet – is almost upon us. Not a paid up member of the football tribe? Fret not. Best in Travel has your back…

When is the World Cup?

Why should I watch?

The 2018 World Cup kicks off on 14 June when host nation Russia takes on Saudi Arabia in a Group A match at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, and runs until 15 July which is the day of the final. Germany are the reigning champions aer winning in Brazil in 2014. They beat Lionel Messi's Argentina in the final.

The World Cup is the biggest, most compelling event in the sporting world and if you don’t follow the competition, you’re leing the rest of the world go to the party without you. (The 2014 World Cup Final was watched live by over one billion people).

Where is the World Cup? The tournament is being held in Russia, the largest country in the world that’s home to approximately 144.3 million people, for the very first time. Russia was granted the license to host the FIFA World Cup on 2 December 2010. The FIFA matches will be played in 11 cities and 12 stadiums. The biggest stadium is the Luzhniki in Moscow, which will host the opening game and the final.

You’ll get to see of the greatest football players in the world work there magic and watch some intriguing storylines unfurl. Case in point? Barcelona ace Lionel Messi has not seen his national side, Argentina, win a World Cup in his entire lifetime (Argentina last lied the coveted trophy in 1986 and have lost three straight major finals – two in the Copa America and the 2014 World Cup – in three years). Can the Barcelona talisman stop his country’s World Cup rot?

EVERYTHING YOU NE Which players will be in russia?

Who is the mascot?

The aforementioned Lionel Messi will be in Russia as will Portuguese superstar (and contender for the 2018 Ballon D’Or) Cristiano Ronaldo.

The big question: who is the mascot for the FIFA 2018 World Cup? Best in Travel can reveal that Russia 2018's mascot is Zabivaka – a wolf who's name means 'the one who scores’. Zabivaka was chosen following a vote in Russia which saw one million people cast their votes!

You can also look forward to seeing South American stars such as Luis Suarez and Neymar playing for Uruguay and Brazil while, from Europe, Premier League players Paul Pogba and Alvaro Morata will be turning out for France and Spain respectively. Other in-form players to watch out for are Egyptian sensation, Mohamed Salah, and England ace Harry Kane. Nations have to name their chosen 23 men for the World Cup by 4 June 2018, 10 days before the tournament begins.

What are the groups? Group A: Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Uruguay Group B: Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran Group C: France, Australia, Peru, Denmark Group D: Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria Group E: Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia Group F: Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea Group G: Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, England Group H: Poland, Senegal, Colombia, Japan

Who are the referees? The list of match referees and assistant referees was released by Fifa in March and I can be viewed here: hp://resources.fifa.com/image/upload/list-ofmatch-officials-for-the-2018-fifa-worldcuptm.pdf?cloudid=ygppy1zdhjaxituykarn There are 36 match referees in total and 63 assistant referees selected.

Is var being used? It is. FIFA confirmed back in March that video assistant referees will be used in the Russia 2018 Fifa World Cup. “It’s not possible that in 2018 everyone in their living room knows a few seconds aer the play whether a referee has made a mistake and the referee doesn’t,” explained FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “We need to live with the times. We wanted to give the referees tools so they can make beer decisions, and in the World Cup some very important decisions are made.”

EVERYTHING YOU NE What ball will be used at the 2018 World Cup? The official 2018 Fifa World Cup ball is the Adidas Telstar . Designed to be a modern interpretation of the iconic 1970 Telstar ball, the ball only has six panels in an innovative design whereas the original Telstar had 32 panels fastened together.

How can I watch the World Cup? If you haven’t yet scored tickets to the World Cup, look to the ‘last-minute’ sales phase which runs until 15 July 2018 (i.e the World Cup tournament final). These tickets will be implemented on a first-come, first-served basis. Ticket prices range from £79 for a second-round group match up to £829 for the final. Russian residents will be eligible to obtain cheaper tickets with prices starting at £17. All fans aending matches at the World Cup will need to apply for a FAN ID, a free official identity document required by the Russian authorities. The FAN ID includes benefits such as visa-free entry to the Russian Federation, as well as free use of public transport on match-days.

Who are the kit providers? Adidas: Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Egypt, Germany, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Russia, Spain and Sweden. Can’t make it to Moscow? UK audiences can watch World Cup matches on both the BBC and ITV. The first game, Russia vs. Saudi Arabia, will be aired on ITV while BBC's coverage begins the next day. Online streams will be available to US audiences on fuboTV. Let the countdown begin!

Even the smallest children stay up to ring in midnight. Both January 1 and 2 are holidays.

On this day, Russian men and women bring gis and flowers to all the important women in their lives and greet them with the phrase: “C vos’mym Marta!” (Happy March 8th!). When Rolls-Royce announced three years ago that it would launch Cullinan, it did so in the knowledge that its customers around the world had asked it to build “The Rolls-Royce of SUVs”, with luxury, performance and usability not seen before in the SUV market. Many of these customers were younger, very successful high-net-worth individuals who are heavily engaged in the experience economy, and wanted a Rolls-Royce that would take them to the ends of the Earth in ultimate luxury.

Automotive mobility has always been a fast moving and dynamic business, with new concepts – such as SUVs – appearing with great regularity. But those new concepts need to be perfected in order to be adopted by those customers who will accept no compromise – the patrons of true luxury. Hence the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

“History set our precedent, and today RollsRoyce answers its call to action,” comments Müller-Ötvös. “Our answer to the visionaries, adventurers, explorers and those who believe in the supremacy of liberty is the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.” The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is Rolls-Royce as it’s never seen before. When Sir Henry Royce said, “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it beer. When it does not exist, design it”, he could have had Cullinan in mind. “We knew we had to offer our clients what they couldn’t find in the SUV market,” continues Müller-Ötvös. “They do not accept limitations or compromises in their lives. They are the new pioneers, and for them it’s about their sense of adventure and daring in how they live their experiences. This approach to life demands a motor car that can go-anywhere in ultimate luxury and style – Rolls-Royce style. Hence Cullinan.” It was clear that these new, younger and more adventurous customers wanted a Rolls-Royce that would take them completely off the beaten track and reward them with life’s most enriching experiences. What they didn’t want was a vehicle as ubiquitous as an SUV with compromises such as increased cabin noise due to the “two-box” formula; shared platforms that affect performance and comfort; the choice of being good either onroad or off-road; or a lower, more featureless SUV that blends in and becomes just another car. “Cullinan is luxury in its purest form blended with perfect practicality and off-road capability,” comments Müller-Ötvös. “Effortless, Everywhere is not just the promise behind Cullinan. It’s the fact.” Making luxury Effortless, Everywhere engendered an evolution in Rolls-Royce’s approach to creating an authentic Rolls-Royce SUV. The most obvious sign of this was the radical rear of Cullinan.

LUXURY CARS

www.luxnews.co LUXURY REDEFINED

world luxury

For the first time a Rolls-Royce has an opening tailgate, called ‘The Clasp’. In a nod to the era when luggage was mounted on the exterior of the motor-car, so the occupants did not travel with their belongings, the rear profile of Cullinan is a two-part, ‘D-Back’ format, with the bustle denoting the place of the luggage. ‘The Clasp’ opens and closes in its two sections automatically at the touch of the key fob buon. The rear passenger compartment of Cullinan has been designed to offer the best seat in the house for the owner’s particular needs. Two rear configurations are offered – Lounge Seats or Individual Seats. The Lounge Seat configuration is the more functional of the two options. With space for three passengers in the rear, it will likely be more aractive to families. The rear seats also fold down – a first for Rolls-Royce. The seats fold electronically in a number of configurations by pressing the appropriate buon in the boot or rear door pocket. One press sees each backrest effortlessly fold down, whist at the same time moving the headrests upwards to avoid making an imprint on the seat cushion. Both seat backs can be folded completely, creating a flat load area or in a 2/3 and 1/3 split, increasing practicality even further. Rear passengers can still travel with a long load, or use the carpeted seat back as an occasional table on which to rest their precious personal items. For those who intend to transport large items back from their adventures, the rear of Cullinan offers a large amount of space in different arrangements. The rear compartment or boot area offers a standard 560 litres of space, growing to 600 with the parcel shelf removed. Furthermore, the base of the rear seats sits higher than the boot floor, so even with both rear seats folded, the items in the boot cannot slip forward and

are safely contained, unlike in any other SUV. But for those wishing to carry a long item back from their trip – whether it be a Mark Rothko from the Art Gallery or a newly discovered artefact from the latest archaeological dig – a loading length of 2245mm and load capacity of 1930 litres is accessed by electronically raising the boot floor to meet the seat base, allowing the item to slide through effortlessly. Rolls-Royce’s investment in making the rear of Cullinan effortlessly and ultimately practical has the side benefit of offering a loading length longer than a Range Rover Vogue Extended Wheelbase. A very practical RollsRoyce indeed. Knowing that the Rolls-Royce customer expects to bespoke his or her Cullinan, a second rear configuration is offered. The Individual Seat configuration is for those who value the ultimate luxury an SUV can offer over practicality. The two individual rear seats are separated by a Fixed Rear Centre Console incorporating a drinks cabinet with RollsRoyce whisky glasses and decanter, champagne flutes and refrigerator. The seats also move in a number of planes to offer ultimate comfort whilst travelling in the rear. One final feature brings Rolls-Royce’s ultimate level of luxury to this configuration of Cullinan, creating the first truly “three-box” SUV. Inspired by the age when one never travelled with one’s luggage, a glass partition isolates the passenger cabin from the luggage compartment, creating an inner ecosystem for the occupants. In addition to enhanced and class-leading silence within the cabin, a further benefit becomes clear in the hoest and coldest of environments. Thanks to the sealed cabin created by the glass partition wall, the occupants can remain in the optimum temperature even when the luggage compartment stands open.

LUXURY CARS

Driving to your remote location is simply the first part of the adventure in a Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Further enjoyment awaits in the shape of a RollsRoyce Recreation Module. Imagine the scene. Having chosen your adventure you call down to your garage. “Jason, we’re going to go drone racing today. Can you load the Drone Module into the Cullinan?” Downstairs, Jason selects the Drone Racing Module from the rack containing several other Recreation Modules that the owner has had commissioned from Rolls-Royce to satisfy his or her preferred recreational pursuits. Fly fishing, photography, rock climbing, snowboarding, parascending, kite boarding, base jumping, volcano boarding or simply siing and taking in the view, anything is possible thanks to the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective. Easily sloed and plugged into the boot of Cullinan, each Recreation Module contains a motorised drawer housing the equipment and paraphernalia specific to each Cullinan owner’s pursuits. When the owner is ready to play, it presents itself. www.rolls-roycemotorcars.com/enGB/home.html

The double chair li has two stages, with the first rising to the station of Ai at a change in altitude of 650m with a 1.6km descent. The resort offers just eight individual pistes linked by four lis. However what the ski area lacks in size it makes up for in prey tree-lined pistes which cut through the lush forest. AUDEMARS PIGUET ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE D

LUXURY WATCHES

THE SPLASH MADE BY LAST YEAR’S ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE DIVER WHICH WAS INTRODUCED IN A VARIETY OF VIBRANT SUMMER HUES MADE IT CLEAR THAT THE DESIRE FOR COLOUR AND CONTRAST IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE, ESPECIALLY WHEN CHOOSING A STATEMENT ACCESSORY SUCH AS A LUXURY TIMEPIECE.

Presented in Tropical Turquoise, Beige Means Business and Khaki Has Character, the three new funky colours take a chill pill and are designed to be worn all-year-round. These new additions to the collection have a 42mm stainless steel case with glare-proof sapphire crystal and caseback, and are powered by a selfwinding manufacture movement.

IVER

The traditional sturdy rubber straps complement the rubber clad crowns and “Mega Tapisserie” dials, which feature white gold applied hour-markers and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating for great visibility in or out of the water. THE TOURBILL

LUXURY WATCHES

LON BY BOVET A BOND FORMED BY HISTORY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP TIES BOVET TO THE TOURBILLON. PASCAL RAFFY, BOVET’S OWNER, FOUNDED HIS ARTISANAL MANUFACTURE FOR HAUTE HORLOGERIE PRINCIPALLY ON THE CREATION OF SUPERIOR-QUALITY TOURBILLON MOVEMENTS AND EXCEPTIONAL WORKMANSHIP AND COMPLICATIONS. Ensuring peerless regularity in timekeeping, the tourbillon offers choreographed perfection. The expert hands of BOVET’s artisans elevate these tourbillon timepieces into works of art in which substance, form, and culture intersect. Substance In 1801, the tourbillon was conceived to counter the effects of earth’s gravity on timepieces kept in a vertical position. This complex mechanism consists of a rotating carriage holding the organ regulating the movement, which includes a balance, balance-spring, and the escapement. By rotating, the carriage compensates discrepancies in timekeeping caused by maintaining the watch in a vertical position in a pocket. BOVET watchmakers have worked to further refine this complex mechanical marvel, in order to optimize the timepiece’s accuracy. BOVET tourbillons take on two different forms, representing two methods of manufacture. The first is the traditional tourbillon, with the carriage held at each extremity by a single bridge. The second is a patented construction for a flying tourbillon. The single bridge holds the tourbillon at the center of its axis and arranges the escapement and balance-spring on both sides of this central point of aachment. This is an innovation that improves chronometric performance and elevates the aesthetic of displaying the escapement and the balance-spring on the two faces of the caliber. It is an essential feature given that numerous timepieces from the Fleurier Collection are fied with the ingenious convertible Amadéo system , which in a few simple steps transforms a timepiece into a reversible wristwatch, table clock, and pocket watch (men’s models) or pendant watch (women’s models).

Form Harmonious design and workmanship play a central role in BOVET’s approach to exclusive quality. The exacting quality of the workmanship of each component in the Maison’s tourbillon timepiece is a reminder that this is not merely a mechanism for performance. It draws aention to the measure of art applied to ensure that each micron of material is as beautiful and as well wrought as possible. Culture The independence with which Pascal Raffy has endowed his Maison, results in truly original fine watchmaking design in which technical and aesthetic qualities prevail. Benefiing from a high level of integration, BOVET independently manufactures traditional balance-springs, balances, pallets, and all components required for the creation of an exhaustive range of tourbillons. The tourbillon excels only when conceived, manufactured, decorated, assembled, adjusted and integrated into a caliber with utmost care. For BOVET, the sum of this expertise rests upon individual mastery of every step of watchmaking from the first to the last, and upon a vision conceived by Pascal Raffy to make every BOVET tourbillon a watchmaker’s work of art. www.bovet.com

AMADÉO FLEURIER AMADÉO The Amadéo Fleurier Amadéo timepiece elicits considerable respect when one comprehends the fragile and delicate nature of skeleton movements, particularly their escapements. Traditionally, artisan engravers receive sets of skeleton bridges and plates and decorate their surfaces by following the pressed forms. However, Pascal Raffy and his teams took a different approach to this tourbillon to achieve a high level of aesthetic excellence sacrificing neither the timepiece’s reliability nor its precision-timing performance. The secret of this success was entrusting the skeleton design to both the watchmakers (for the technical aspects) and to artisan engravers. By incorporating technical constraints into their considerations, the artisan gave the plates and bridges the shape of their pressing so that these would perfectly match the Fleurisanne motif later engraved onto the surface of each component.

OTTANTASEI

For OantaSei, the 10-day tourbillon designed in collaboration with Pininfarina, BOVET sought the light. The plate underpinning the entire movement highlights the fine balance between lightness and superior structural strength. Half a day of machining and electro-erosion is required to create a single plate. The crasmen from the decoration workshops required a full day to achieve the level of finish demanded. Because the magic of watchmaking is inherently three-dimensional, both sides of the plate and its sides are chamfered.

VIRTUOSO VIII The Virtuoso VIII — 10-day big date flying tourbillon condenses the crasmanship and authenticity as defined by Pascal Raffy. The steel is chamfered and polished. The disk plates are sunk and chamfered. The two faces of the plate are chased with an extremely delicate motif, contrasting with the surface of the bridges decorated with the emblematic Fleurisanne engraving . The bridge of the tourbillon carriage is craed in titanium to reduce the weight of the carriage and eliminate any possible magnetic charge. Its two arms, spreading like wings above the flying tourbillon, are also rounded off and polished according to the best traditions of fine watchmaking.

RÉCITAL 9 MISS ALEXANDRA RÉCITAL 20 ASTÉRIUM A 7-day tourbillon with precision moon phase, the Récital 9 Miss Alexandra is BOVET’s first timepiece graced with a feminine, oval-shaped case. The construction of the movement between two three-quarter plates offers ample space for the tourbillon carriage. The large bridges of the tourbillon carriage appear to offer a wide smile. Normally positioned on the upper pivot of the tourbillon carriage, the second hand is replaced by a diamond whose facets create sparks of light on the movement’s polished surfaces as the hand sweeps around. Joining the astronomical themed family of the Récital 18 Shooting Star, the Récital 20 Astérium presents a 10-day flying tourbillon equipped with a night sky annual calendar with astronomical functions. The Maison’s engravers chose to decorate the surface of the bridges and plate with refined and delicate chasing. The surface displays the finesse of graining and all the brilliance of a ‘bris de verre’ shaered glass motif. This fine, granular texture contrasts flawlessly against its angular frame and the high-polished contours of its bridges. The movement’s architecture and decoration inspires admiration in its depth and detail, framing the revers-side sapphire dial, with its highly legible engraving of the night sky and the sapphire rear dial, and an opportunity to admire the movement’s architecture and decoration. This virtuosity paves the way for the Récital 22 Grand Récital to be presented in May 2018.

LUXURY KITCHEN

BLENHEIM FORGE ORIGINATING AND BASED IN PECKHAM, SOUTH LONDON; BLENHEIM FORGE IS THE STEEL WORKSHOP OF BLADE-SMITHS JON WARSHAWSKY, JAMES ROSS-HARRIS AND RICHARD WARNER, IN WHICH THEY CREATE HAND-FORGED QUALITY KITCHEN KNIVES. Self-taught; knife making began as an obsession that James Ross-Harris and Jon Warshawsky cultivated in their back garden on a hand-made forge, fuelled by a blend of coke and charcoal. Over the years they have perfected their cra, focusing on fine-tuning the process of hand-forging in order to create knives of the highest character and performance. Shortly aer seing up, Blenheim Forge expanded to include machinemaking extraordinaire Richard Warner, and moved into Arch 229, Blenheim Grove; a railway arch with a long history of metalwork artistry. Blenheim Forge now sells their knives to chefs and cooking-enthusiasts around the world. “You can cook, if you need to, with a fire and a few ingredients. You can make things simple with a pot or two. But cooking changes the day you choose a decent knife. A good knife is probably going to set you back a few quid. It needn’t cost thousands, but you’re certainly going to choose one that’s suitable for the upper limits of your skills. Choosing your knife is a statement about yourself “I am a cook - not just someone who cooks”. Once that choice, that declaration and that investment is made, everything changes. Every piece of knifework you do becomes easier but you also begin a relationship with the knife you’ve chosen. With every use you become more skilled, adapting to the knife. With every sharpening, with every nick you put in the edge, the blade adapts to you. In a remarkably short period of time you and your knife grow together.

As in any relationship, there is always, still, a long way to go. The knife, mishandled, can do you enormous damage. If you mistreat your knife, you too can damage it. If you keep it as sharp as you should, you will never lose respect for it’s awful capabilities, even as you become more and more skilled in using them. But because of this, the cost, the time, the development of a ‘relationship’ something wonderful happens. You are so invested in the blade you own that you will not take it in your hand without the intention to enjoy it. Every time I take it from the roll and wrap my fingers around the handle of my favourite knife, I know that every single cut I make will be a pleasurable experience, something honourable, meditative, physical yet calming. www.blenheimforge.co.uk

GOSHA RUBCHINSKIY Gosha Rubchinskiy has wooed the fashion industry in recent seasons, with his post-Soviet take on streetwear. Born in Moscow, the designer studied at the city’s College of Technology and Design before launching his menswear label ГОША РУБЧИНСКИЙ in 2008 describing it as “a personal take on the fetishistic uniformity of Moscow street gangs’ post-Perestroika suburb sportswear, mixed with political paraphernalia.” Referencing Reagan’s Cold War-description of the USSR, Rubchinskiy’s first collection, Empire of Evil, was presented at the end of 2008 for SS/09.

His second collection, Growing and Expanding, was shown in a disused Orthodox church-turnedgym in Moscow’s suburbs. Rubchinskiy’s third collection, The Sunrise Is Not far Behind The Mountains, consisted of three parts: a video shot in St. Petersburg, a book of photographs, and the collection itself. In 2010, the designer presented his fourth collection, Slave, as a part of Fashion East Menswear Installation. Rubchinskiy has been working with Comme des Garçons since 2012.

LESIA PARAMONOVA Lesia Paramonova is a young fashion designer based in Moscow whose clothing and accessories brand, LES, is mostly inspired by forest and nature. The brand name is a play on Russian words: it consists of the designer’s name and also her main inspiration (LES' translates as forest). LES was conceived in March 2012 when Paramonova won PREVIEW, a young designers award set up by MasterCard and cult Russian website LookAtMe.ru. As the main prize, Paramonova got to show her collection as part of Cycles&Seasons Fashion Week by MasterCard.

Her first collection, created during her third year at university, was lauded in the foreign press, including CR Fashion Book, Italian Vogue and Grazia and American Marie Claire, and created a buzz in fashion blogs. Susie Bubble dedicated two posts to LES, while Paramonova was photographed by street-style photographers in one of the label's floral looks while visiting the Olympic Games in London. Paramonova has created two capsule collections for Moscow boutiques. She has also collaborated with Kiehl’s. LES' stockists include Aizel, Vesna and Parisienne, showrooms Click Boutique and Air in Moscow; and S*uce shop in Dubai.
