HOSPITAL HISTORY

La Gonâve Wesleyen Hospital is a faith-based hospital dedicated to caring for the sick, promoting preventative medicine, and training caregivers and technicians on the island of La Gonâve, Haiti. Since its founding in 1948 by the Wesleyan Mission, the hospital has provided basic health services through resident medical staff and visiting teams of specialists to the entire surrounding region of Anseà-Galets.

With more than 100,000 residents without other access to the kind of medical resources the hospital provides, La Gonâve Wesleyen Hospital is committed to never turning anyone away. Residents would otherwise need to take a 12-mile trip across the sea in unsafe boats followed by a two-hour drive via bus or taxi to a hospital that may or may not receive them and that’s if they are able to pay to get off the island in the first place.

Each year, WHI works with partners to send containers of supplies, medicines, and equipment to the hospital. In 2020, a solar-powered water desalination system was completed with our partner GivePower providing a sustainable source of clean water for the community as well as 70,000 liters/day of free water for the hospital. In partnership with Build Health International, WHI provided the hospital with a new solar energy grid allowing the hospital to become energy independent.

Where We Are now

WHI has been working closely with the hospital administration to strengthen its financial processes and capacity, including its reporting, procurement, and friends and partnership development strategy. Now, in partnership with Build Health International, WHI is embarking on a multi-year strategic plan to build a healthcare system that is sustainable, equitable, and serviceable for the community of La Gonâve.

Proposal

FUNDING FOR PHASE I (OF V) IS NEARING COMPLETION; PHASE II IS READY TO BEGIN

La Gonâve Wesleyen Hospital has been operating as the sole hospital on "the forgotten" Haitian island of La Gonâve since its founding. The hospital was able to deploy two medical teams and resources to the Haitian mainland to provide life-saving care for survivors of the August 14, 2021, earthquake while continuing operations as usual.

But as the outpatient clinic nears 70 years old, the hospital is in dire need of improvements, upgrades, and additions if it is going to continue to serve the people of Haiti with quality healthcare.

That is why, with the help of so many generous donors and partners like Build Health International, World Hope has embarked upon a multiyear, $13 million strategic capital improvement. project to be completed in 5phases. These strategic investments will result in improved functionality at the hospital, an improved hospital campus and facilities, increased medical capacity, and more efficient operational practices.

At this point in the process, World Hope is focused on completing the first two critical phases.

Phase I($250,000 from completion):

- New lab equipment & training

- Overhaul the water supply system

- Build a 24-7 blood donation and transfusion center

- Create a new oxygen generation (PSA) plant

Phase I of the plan focuses on increasing the hospital’s ability to provide life-giving care while reducing dependency on resources from the mainland. The current instability and violence in the country make these needed changes seven more critical for the hospital’s long-term success.

Phase II ($1.7million)

- While there are many components, the main focus is building an outpatient facility that could serve up to 200 patients per day.

- The facility will be open 24-7 as a safe place for transfusions and will include storage for an emergency blood supply.
