About the World Health Innovation Network About Us The World Health Innovation Network (WIN) is based at the Odette School of Business at the University of Windsor, under the leadership of world renowned researcher Dr. Anne Snowdon. WIN brokers partnerships between key stakeholders to source, embed and scale innovations in health systems. WIN develops the evidence of impact and scalability across health systems and disseminates this information to accelerate health system transformation, drive economic growth and improve patient outcomes.

Our Vision

WIN sources innovation, creates the evidence for impact and develops models for scalability to embed new technologies, products and models of care into health systems to achieve value and drive economic growth.

Our Mission WIN partners with health system stakeholders to source innovation, create the evidence for value and then develops models for scalability to embed innovative technologies, products and models of care into health systems to achieve value for Canadians and drive economic growth for innovators.

Message from the Advisory Council Chair I have had the distinct pleasure of working with an astonishing group of colleagues to support the exceptional results of WIN. Under the leadership of Dr. Anne Snowdon, through the incredible efforts of the team and our many committed partners, WIN has built a significant presence both in Canada and internationally.

WIN continues to build on a track record of research excellence documenting the value and impact of innovations in health systems. Working together with leaders in industry, health systems, government and citizens WIN has created the strong footholds that drive economic growth for Canadian companies, create sustainability for health systems and improve health and safety of our populations.

For WIN, 2018 has been a year of blazing new trails. WIN’s unique collaboration model mobilizes the expertise and experience of our global consortium of partners to scale innovative solutions that accomplish the greatest value and impact for Canada and the world. While hiking together, there is never a single path to follow as there are unlimited possibilities to explore that will lead us to new heights and destinations surpassing our imagination and expectation.

I am proud to contribute to this impactful Canadian network. Running the ridge with so many exceptional, intersectoral and interdisciplinary partners has been truly remarkable and by working together, I look forward to achieving an incredible summit as the future unfolds.

Message from the Odette School of Business Dean At the Odette School of Business, it is never business as usual. We believe that essential components of 21st century leadership are the capacity to anticipate emerging opportunities and the vision to identify the people who make it a reality.

We are committed to providing these opportunities for our students and WIN plays a key role in delivering this novel learning experience.

WIN is the first Canadian health innovation network with formal ties to the U.S. combining healthcare and business acumen to rapidly commercialize innovative technologies that benefit health systems. Students, faculty and partners from around the world are attracted by the unique opportunity to engage in real-world learning experiences by working with health sector leaders to develop innovative solutions to current and emerging challenges. The network provides these rare experiences for undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral students and researchers and offers exemplary leadership programs to clinicians and executives in health, government, non-governmental and business sectors developing new skills to drive and scale needed innovation in health sectors.

Great things are achieved when people meet on the way to the top of a mountain. As a unique and impactful network at Odette, WIN has fostered remarkable pride and community within the university, our city and built lasting partnerships nationally and internationally required in the 21st century.

Message from the Academic Chair The future of healthcare will be led by health systems that harness data to create the intangible services, technologies and business models to improve the health of global populations. Technologies that transform health system’s rich data into knowledge will empower predictive and proactive analytical tools that ensure the best health outcomes for every citizen. The road to economic growth in Canada is paved by innovations that transform health systems of today, focused on managing illness and disease, to those of tomorrow that proactively identify health risks and signal interventions to support citizens to stay healthy.

WIN engages the expertise of data-rich health systems, entrepreneurial companies, policy makers and academia to create evidence-based results to attain peak performance and economic growth. WIN’s value-based procurement research closes a crucial gap in the innovation and commercialization cycle enabling innovative companies to accelerate market access and scale innovative solutions in health systems. Our research into transformational supply chain infrastructure, embedded in clinical care environments, enables the tracking and traceability of care processes and products linked to individual patient outcomes. Our seminal research provides the qualitative and quantitative evidence to achieve significant cost savings while improving health system performance and safety.

Mobilizing health information to support the design, implementation and scalability of datapowered health technologies creates the pipeline of next generation products capable of transforming healthcare delivery.

At HIMSS19 Global, Dr. Anne Snowdon explained how the Triple Aim can be achieved by advancing supply chains infrastructure in health systems.

When innovations are scaled, health system performance and quality is strengthened, stronger economic growth is achieved and Canada’s standing in global rankings for health system performance is improved. I am honoured to collaborate with so many colleagues around the world to provide current and emerging leaders with the essential expertise and research evidence needed to transform our health systems and improve population health outcomes for years to come.

Building the Evidence to See Above the Clouds Fundamental to WIN’s research is a unique collaboration model connecting industry, health systems, policy makers, academia and patients. Our capacity to broker these essential relationships contributes to developing innovative solutions that solve current problems and can be rapidly scaled to achieve health system transformation.

Three ground-breaking supply chain case studies in Alberta Health Services, Canada, National Health Service, England and Mercy Health, U.S., provided the evidence of value and impact of supply chain adoption in health systems. To achieve these results, strong and bold leadership and engagement of clinicians are required for successful implementation of supply chain infrastructure to improve health system performance. Data derived through traceability from manufacturer, to patient care processes and outcomes can be mined to inform clinician best practice and improve health outcomes.

Global health systems are embracing innovation to solve current problems.

Our health systems no longer need to be viewed as cost centres but rather as economic drivers. This shift in thinking translates into new bodies of research, industries and capacity in our health systems. Through development of realworld evidence of the value and impact of scaling innovation in our health systems, WIN is building an essential and new foundation of knowledge. By creating and widely disseminating the guides and legends to rapidly scale innovation, our new and emerging leaders can see above the clouds and amplify the impact to improve healthcare quality, sustainability and drive economic growth.

by Trail Blazing Using empirical, cutting-edge evidence WIN equips current and future leaders with the essentials to begin expeditions and successfully reach their destinations. Through a novel program of experiential learning, WIN provides an opportunity for students to explore how to scale innovation in and across health systems. This unique education model affords participants the multi-sectoral knowledge and interdisciplinary collaboration required to identify and rapidly capitalize on innovation and opportunities. Students, faculty and partners from around the world are attracted by this rare opportunity to engage in real-world learning experiences working directly with stakeholders and decision-makers. In these programs students are supported to successfully navigate the switch backs with the guidance of national and international experts in business, health systems and policy who share their tremendous wealth of knowledge and experience.

WIN works with industry, health systems, governments, academia and consumers to develop a common understanding of health system challenges and opportunities. By crossing the boundaries between sectors and disciplines, brokering relationships and developing a common language to exchange knowledge and lessons learned, we achieve the greatest impact. By going off the beaten path we build relationships between health systems leaders and industry partners to create a collective understanding of the challenges health systems face and how innovation and existing assets can be used to co-design a solution.

Achieve the Summit One significant crevasse impeding transformation of global health systems is the knowledge and capacity to design and implement innovation procurement models and supply chain traceability systems to generate data and value required today. WIN’s unique community of collaborators is focused on a vital goal to transform health systems to achieve peak performance, deliver the best outcomes for patients and generate economic growth for companies.

Free hiking together we generate new bodies of research and knowledge that traverse boundaries and borders. WIN is creating the belay to access essential information assets and expertise to develop solutions that offer the most value. By building evidence, establishing a common understanding and widely disseminating our combined knowledge and learnings, we can design solutions collectively to improve the health and well-being of all.

Longwoods publishes WIN’s research on healthcare supply chain transformation which propose that systemlevel transformation of clinical environment infrastructure will advance quality and strengthen patient safety at sustainable costs.

The future of healthcare logistics was explored by Dr. Anne Snowdon at the Week of Health INNovation 2018 in Odense, Denmark where she demonstrated how improving supply chain infrastructure in clinical settings can advance quality, patient safety and clinical outcomes.
