In 2017, the Government of Canada, Networks of Centres of Excellence of Canada (NCE) provided $1.6 million over four years (2017-2021) to create SCAN Health. Hosted by the University of Windsor’s Odette School of Business, SCAN Health is an International Knowledge Translation Platform funded to accelerate knowledge translation and address key problems, challenges and opportunities of high strategic importance for health systems in Canada and around the globe.

Spanning five countries, including Australia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada – and with over one hundred partners from industry, healthcare, government and academia – the Network will enable the exchange of information and expertise to accelerate the implementation of healthcare supply chain best practices around the world.

By mobilizing supply chain best practices to track health products and processes to patient outcomes we can significantly reduce medical error, increase health system sustainability and drive economic growth for companies globally.

JOINT MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT AND THE SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR & CEO Healthcare is one of the largest and most complex business sectors in the world. Expert analyses continually point to the need to do better in delivering health to global populations and improving patient safety. Adverse events are devastating for patients and their families – and they are very costly to the organization and the healthcare system.

Many other industries have improved safety and efficiency by implementing supply chain best practices that track and trace products and processes from manufacturer to the end-user. The lack of strategic supply chain management in the world’s healthcare systems makes it difficult to meet growing patient demands for safe care while improving efficiency, managing costs and achieving value for patients.

EVENT OVERVIEW The SCAN Health Global Networking Event: Mapping the Global Journey to Supply Chain Excellence will broker relationships between network stakeholders and mobilize knowledge exchange on strategic health sector supply chain. These face-to-face gatherings include fostering collaboration on supply chain initiatives and projects, creating dialogue focused on key challenges and priorities for health systems. They also allow for the profiling of best/promising practices as evidence of progress towards a strategic supply chain, developing a global registry of product and patient outcomes, and scaling supply chain initiatives across global borders.

This event is a pre-conference opportunity hosted by the Healthcare Transformation Group (HTG), which is comprised of five healthcare systems, Mercy Health, Geisinger Health System, Intermountain Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, and Mayo Clinic.

This global event will highlight five countries’ journeys, the motivation, the benefit and challenges to embedding and scaling supply chain best practices in healthcare. This event will create unique opportunities for international exchange and dialogue to accelerate adoption and transformation of healthcare to create value for health systems businesses, and populations.

International experts from health systems, business, industry, government and academia will explore progress to date and create a roadmap for international collaboration among U.S., Canada, UK, Netherlands and Australia to accelerate strategic supply chain implementation to achieve efficiencies, quality and safety. nationally and globally.

BIOGRAPHIES Dr. Charles Alessi | General Practitioner, Senior Advisor, Public Health England Dr. Charles Alessi is a GP and Senior Advisor to Public Health England.

He has extensive experience of the National Health Service (NHS) in a variety of senior positions in both primary and secondary care as well as Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and Health Authorities and is the outgoing Chairman of the National Association of Primary Care (NAPC) , part of the NHS confederation.

Dr. Alessi has extensive experience of working at senior levels both in England and internationally, in Europe and the Americas and has been active in advising both governments and international organizations. He also has experience of military medicine having fulfilled the role of Director of Medicine and Clinical Governance for the British Armed Forces in Germany.

He is a founding member of the International Care Delivery Alliance, an international non-profit organisation consisting of member organisations who share a common philosophy of care delivery based on coordination of care within and across health care settings, including social settings where appropriate, and with an understanding of the importance of a population health perspective.

Mr. Dennis Black | Director, e-Business, Solutions Group, Becton Dickenson (BD) Mr. Dennis Black has over 25 years of experience in the medical device industry and has worked in a variety of different roles. He joined BD, a leading medical technology company, in 1998 and currently works within the BD Solutions and Services group. Dennis is focused on developing and implementing a variety of supply chain solutions and related services.

Other responsibilities include implementing FDA’s Unique Device Identification (UDI) regulation within BD and collaborating with select customers on initiatives to reduce healthcare costs. Dennis currently serves on the GS1 Healthcare Global Leadership Team; the GS1 US Executive Leadership Committee; and the Strategic MarketPlace Initiatives (SMI) Board of Directors. He actively participates in various industry work groups within SMI, Global Healthcare Exchange (GHX), AdvaMed, and the Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management (AHRMM) to help solve a variety of healthcare challenges.

Mr. Peter Brereton | President & CEO, TECSYS Mr. Peter Brereton joined TECSYS at its inception and initially led the Company's software development, product management, sales and marketing. In 1995, Mr. Brereton was appointed President.

In 1998, Mr. Brereton was appointed CEO and was largely responsible for the Company's Initial Public Offering. He repositioned TECSYS in the supply chain execution industry, and leveraged the Company's strengths in technology and supply chain expertise to achieve significant growth and become a leader in its markets.

Mr. Brereton eventually moved the Company into health systems where the Company is now pleased to serve approximately 35 IDN’s. He also led a number of acquisitions, taking a foothold in other vertical markets. In 2007, he led a strategic transformation of TECSYS' businesses, focusing the Company on its two current major industry segments: healthcare and complex high-volume distribution.

Mr. Paul Broadbridge | CEO, Digital Bridge Consulting, Former Chief Digital Supply Chain Officer, Australian Digital Health Agency Mr. Paul Broadbridge is a procurement, supply chain and business improvement leader who has worked at a State and National level in the Australian Healthcare system for over 12 years leading ‘whole of system’ procurement and supply chain initiatives to improve healthcare system outcomes. He has held numerous leadership roles to bring the healthcare community together to ensure that system change focuses not just on the what, but the why.

Paul has represented the healthcare industry both nationally and globally on a variety of boards and committees to drive whole of industry change.

In the Australian Digital Health Agency, Paul led a program of work to develop a digital health supply chain strategy for Australia, and increase the utilisation of GS1 standards and solutions across the industry.

Prior to this, he worked as the Deputy Director, Procurement and Supply Chain Management for South Australia Health, leading a transformation program to transition the organisation to a centre led model.

Paul is now the CEO of a new consultancy firm, Digital Bridge Consulting which works across the healthcare industry providing services to organisations needing assistance with their digital procurement and supply chain transformation journey.

Ms. Karen Conway | Executive Director, Industry Relations, GHX Ms. Karen Conway is executive director of industry relations and value for GHX, where she works to optimize clinical and business performance through supply chain excellence. In this role, Conway serves as an in-house analyst on the role supply chain can play in improving value-based healthcare. Conway oversees development of return-oninvestment models to quantify the value of GHX products and services, which have been certified according to the Forrester Total Economic Impact® (TEI) methodology. She also oversees the GHX Voice of Customer programs and develops the curriculum for the GHX Healthcare Supply Chain Summit, the largest industry conference focused on the entire healthcare supply chain.

Prior to joining GHX, Conway served as principal of Conway Associates, a strategic communications firm built on the principles of continuous quality improvement and based on her business partner’s firsthand experience working with Dr. W. Edwards Deming, Procter & Gamble and Walmart. She has also held numerous executive positions and consulting roles in healthcare, energy, and not-for-profit organizations and worked as an award-winning journalist.

Conway is national chair of the Association for Healthcare Resource and Materials Management (AHRMM), the supply chain organization for the American Hospital Association. She serves on the expert advisory council for the Global Network in Strategic Health Sector Supply Chain Innovation, the healthcare advisory board for CAPS Research, and the GS1 Global Healthcare Leadership team.

Conway is a recognized expert on unique device identification and the corresponding systems and process changes required to leverage benefits for multiple stakeholders across the medical device ecosystem. She also writes and lectures on the topic of the value-based healthcare leader, drawing from concepts outlined in the 2013 global leadership book, Leading from the Edge, which she co-authored with the former chief talent officer of Cisco. Conway was also a contributing author to eBusiness in Healthcare, published by Springer in 2008.

Conway earned a master of science in the Science of Healthcare Delivery from Arizona State University in March 2017.

She is also a certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

Mr. Brent Diverty | Vice President of Programs, Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) Brent Diverty is the vice president of the Programs Division at CIHI. In this role, Mr. Diverty oversees CIHI’s extensive data holdings, which span the continuum of health care services and contain related financial, pharmaceutical and workforce data. Mr. Diverty also has executive responsibility for CIHI’s strategic data initiatives, including work and partnerships to advance new data acquisitions, linkages, and access and health system use of data. He has expertise in health system measurement, health data and information resources. Mr. Diverty is an active member of a number of pan-Canadian and international advisory committees on health information. Prior to rejoining CIHI in 2013, Mr. Diverty spent 2 years as a member of the executive team at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in Canberra. While there, he provided strategic leadership to the organization on a diverse portfolio of health and welfare information programs. Through a 20+ year career that has included roles at CIHI, Statistics Canada and in management consulting, Mr. Diverty has worked on both the supply and demand sides of data and information. He holds an MA in economics from McMaster University, with a specialization in health.

Dr. Joseph Drozda | Director of Outcomes Research, Mercy Health (US) Dr. Joe Drozda is a cardiologist and Director of Outcomes Research at Mercy Health—a 4 state regional health system headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. He served on the American College of Cardiology’s Board of Trustees for 5 years, is a past chair of the American College of Cardiology’s Clinical Quality Committee, and for 10 years was the ACC representative to the National Quality Forum where he chaired the Health Professionals Council. He is a past member of the ACC’s National Cardiovascular Data Registry Management Board and serves on the NCDR’s Data Governance Committee. He has been a methodologist for the American Medical Association-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement (PCPI) for over 14 years and is on the inaugural board of the new PCPI Foundation. Dr. Drozda was in private practice for over 18 years and has 24 years of experience in managed care including stints as Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President of Health Plan Operations at Centene—a publicly traded Medicaid managed care company. From 1996 to 1999 he served as Vice President of Medical Management for SSM Health Care-St. Louis participating in that system’s journey to becoming the first healthcare organization to receive the Malcolm Baldrige award.

Dr. Drozda has been involved in clinical trials for over 20 years. The current emphasis of his research at Mercy is on the safety and effectiveness of medical devices. He was principal investigator of an FDA Medical Device Epidemiology Network demonstration in which prototype unique device identifiers were implemented in Mercy’s electronic information systems enabling creation of a database useable for safety surveillance and research. He is a member of the Research and Development Team of the Healthcare Transformation Group—a device-focused alliance of Geisinger, Intermountain, Kaiser Permanente, Mayo, and Mercy and has served on the FDA’s National Evaluation System for healthcare Technology (NEST) Planning Board. He is the principal investigator of BUILD, a major initiative funded by FDA that will extend the Mercy UDI work to Geisinger and Intermountain Healthcare. Dr. Drozda has published and presented in multiple venues on the development and implementation of new systems for performing postmarket medical device surveillance and research.

Mr. Jim Eckler | Co-founder, Healthcare Supply Chain Excellence (HSCx) Jim Eckler provides advisory services in the supply chain management field delivering practical strategic and operational advice to his clients. His background includes over 40 years of experience in supply chain management, outsourcing, business strategy, and corporate governance. He has a particular specialty in the healthcare field, advising hospital systems and other healthcare organizations towards the achievement of supply chain excellence.

To support this focus, Jim co-founded Healthcare Supply Chain Excellence (www.hscxi.com), a consulting firm focusing on cost reduction, improved patient outcomes, and quality improvement, all linked to better supply chain management. He is also the cofounder of Physicians for Supply Chain Excellence, an organization to help physician leaders gain clinical alignment on supply chain matters, particularly towards rationalizing high cost physician preference items.

For 18 years Jim held senior executive roles in operating companies, most recently, for two years as the Chief Operating Officer of Health Shared Services BC, the provider of shared services for the healthcare system across British Columbia and 14 years as President and CEO of SCI Group Inc., a leading supply chain management outsourcing services company, providing logistics services for major technology, healthcare, and retail companies such as Bell Canada, WalMart, Siemens, Amazon, Lowes, and Xerox.

In addition to operational roles, Jim has served on six Boards with roles including Chair, executive committees, finance, and pensions. He holds the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors. Prior to his leadership positions, Jim was a supply chain management consultant for 18 years with Booz Allen and KPMG. Jim is a graduate in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo and in Management Science from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a past chairman of the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Canada. As well, he is a Certified Management Consultant. Jim has authored numerous articles on a broad range of supply chain topics.

Ms. Lynne Golding | Partner, Fasken Martineau Ms. Lynne Golding leads the national Health Law Group at the law firm of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP. Out of their Toronto office, she has an active corporate-commercial practice principally in the health industry, which involves transactions dealing with public and private corporations in both regulated and unregulated industries. Her own practice focuses on corporate law, particularly structuring contractual arrangements between hospitals and private sector service providers and providing governance advice. Together with other members of Fasken Martineau, she co-authored the Ontario Hospital Association’s Toolkit on the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and advised Healthcare Supply Chain Network on the Common Tendering and Contracting Templates for healthcare organizations including by preparing guides and annotations for their use.

Dr. Jove Graham | Assistant Professor, Center for Pharmacy Innovation and Outcomes, Geisinger Health Dr. Jove Graham is a Ph.D.-level biomedical engineer with expertise in biostatistics, analytics of large datasets, and experimental design of clinical studies, particularly observational or retrospective studies using electronic medical record and insurance claims databases. Also 8+ years of FDA regulatory experience, hands-on lab experience in testing and evaluating medical device implants, and a leadership role in the development of industry-standard testing methodologies.

Dr. Stanley M. Huff, M.D. | Chief Medical Informatics Officer, Intermountain Healthcare Dr. Huff is the Chief Medical Informatics Officer at Intermountain Healthcare, and a Professor (Clinical) of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah. He is board certified in Clinical Pathology. He has worked in the area of medical vocabularies and medical database architecture for the past 25 years. He is currently a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, a co-chair of the LOINC Committee, and a co-chair of the HL7 Clinical Information Modeling Initiative (CIMI). He is also the Chair of the Healthcare Services Platform Consortium (HSPC) and the Chair of the FHIR Foundation. He is a former member of the ONC HIT Standards Committee. He teaches a course in medical vocabulary and data exchange standards in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah.

Mr. Darrell Johnson | Vice President, Business Solutions – Data Science, Medtronic Mr. Darrell joined Medtronic in 2007 and currently serves as corporate Vice President of Business Solutions for the Data Science function. Darrell has built an expertise in working within the medical device industry, identifying how wireless technologies and data systems may be applied to improve patient outcomes, decrease healthcare utilization costs, and increase provider care delivery efficiencies. His passion centers on not simply bringing technologies to market, but the successful implementation and utilization of these technologies within the entire healthcare system, including patients.

Prior to joining the newly formed Data Science function in 2016, Darrell spent nine years within the Cardiac Rhythm and Heart Failure business. Under his leadership within the Connected Care business unit, he built a remote monitoring system that now has over One Million lives being monitored across 70 countries, with strong evidence reflecting the impact to both clinical and economic outcomes. With his vision of engaging patients, his team developed the world’s first patient smart phone application for personal device management.

Prior to joining Medtronic, Darrell worked at GE Healthcare in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for approximately eight years and held several key management and marketing positions.

Mr. Brian Mangan | Deputy Director, North West Procurement Development, NHS Mr. Brian Mangan is the Deputy Director at the North West Procurement Development, NHS. With 20 years' experience in supply chain and procurement roles, Mr. Brian Mangan joined the NHS in 2004 as Head of Procurement at The Walton Centre, he moved to head up procurement at Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust in 2007, leaving to establish NHS NW Procurement Development as Assistant Director in 2013. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply, qualified with a Masters Degree in Management Studies, he has held roles as Chair of CIPS Merseyside Branch and a CIPS examiner.

Mr. Vance Moore | President, Business Integration, Mercy Health (US) Vance Moore is president of Mercy’s business integration efforts. His career has included operational and sales roles in health care consulting, distribution, manufacturing, third party logistics and provider operations. Since joining Mercy in 2002, Vance has served as senior vice president of operations and president and CEO of Resource Optimization & Innovation (ROi), Mercy’s supply chain division and one of the world’s top health care supply chain operations.

Prior to Mercy, Vance garnered 17 years of experience in health care with Baxter/Allegiance, Cardinal Health and the health care division of the UPS Logistics Group.

Today, Vance is board chair for ROi and has corporate oversight responsibilities of Mercy Virtual, Mercy Technology Services (MTS), Perioperative Services and Mercy Research. Additionally, Vance was recognized as SCM World’s 2015 “visionary of the year.” He is a board member of Omnicell Incorporated (NASDAQ: OMCL) and Ascension Ventures, as well as a former board member of the Strategic Marketplace Initiative (SMI) and The Bellwether League.

Vance has a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from the University of Arkansas.

Mr. Jitendra Prasad | Chief Program Officer Contracting, Procurement and Supply Management, Alberta Health Services (AHS) Mr. Jitendra Prasad (JP) is the Chief Program Officer (CPO) of Contracting, Procurement & Supply Management (CPSM) for Alberta Health Services (AHS). AHS is tasked with coordinating the delivery of health supports and services across the province serving 4.0 million residents. This organization brings together 13 formerly separate health entities in the province: nine geographically based health authorities and three provincial entities working specifically in the areas of mental health, addictions and cancer and ground ambulance services. Mr. David Reed | VP Healthcare Business Solutions, VP Operations, Cook Medical Dave Reed is currently vice president of Operations, vice president of Healthcare Business Solutions for Cook Medical. With over 30 years of life science industry experience, Dave holds an MBA from California Miramar University and serves on the boards of the Strategic Marketplace Initiative (SMI) and the Indiana University Kelley School of Business Supply Chain Academy Advisory Board and is a professional member of the Association for Healthcare Resource and Materials Management (AHRMM).

Ms. Terrie Reed | Senior Advisor for UDI Adoption, FDA Ms. Terrie Reed, MS Industrial Engineering, recently returned to FDA as Senior Advisor for UDI Adoption. Her experience included a one year opportunity to work with experts in device informatics research at Duke Clinical Research Institute. Ms. Reed has spent her career advocating for the operational integration of data standards and informatics principles into healthcare and government systems in order to improve the efficiency of regulatory submissions and public health reporting. Her latest role as Senior Advisor for UDI Adoption is the culmination of years of systems analysis, information science, and regulatory science experience aimed at significantly improving device evaluation and decision-making through the adoption of unique device identification (UDI) across the device ecosystem.

Dr. Eugene Schneller | Professor, W. P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University Eugene S. Schneller is Professor of Supply Chain Management at the W. P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University. He is Director of the Health Sector Supply Chain Research Consortium, an industry focused group allied with CAPS Research and an affiliate with Arizona State University and the Institute for Supply Management. Schneller’s recent research has focused on the repositioning of health care supply chain leadership, diffusion of health information technology, emergence of consolidated service centers, standardization for clinical preference items, and the impact of physician employment for supply chain performance. Schneller was the lead faculty member in the development of the Mini-MBA for Mayo Clinic and has developed executive supply chain training for HCA, Association for Physician Leadership and the University of Colorado. His consulting efforts bring the most recent strategic thinking into practice for hospitals, GPOs and other supply chain organizations. As co-founder of Healthcare Supply Chain Excellence (http://hscxi.com/) he provides strategic advice to major IDNs, associations and suppliers in the US and abroad.

Dr. Anne Snowdon | Scientific Director & CEO, Supply Chain Advancement Network in Health (SCAN Health) Dr. Anne Snowdon is a professor and Academic Chair of the World Health Innovation Network (WIN), and Scientific Director and CEO of SCAN Health, a Networks of Centres of Excellence International Knowledge Translation Platform located at the University of Windsor’s Odette School of Business.

Dr. Snowdon works to build collaborative partnerships around the globe to advance innovation and scalability of innovation across health systems to strengthen performance, economic value, and sustainability. WIN provides support for innovators and entrepreneurs to successfully bring their discoveries to the Canadian, U.S., and world markets by creating evidence of impact for new products that achieve value for health systems.

Currently, Dr. Snowdon is leading over 10 innovation research initiatives across seven Canadian provinces and five countries that collaborate with government, health professionals, industry, research teams and families. She is a member of the Institute for Health System Innovation of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, and is a Board Member for Alberta Innovates and the Ontario Centres of Excellence.

Dr. Snowdon has published more than 140 research articles, papers and cases, has received over $22 million in research funding, holds patents, and has commercialized a highly successful booster seat product for children traveling in vehicles. She holds a PhD in Nursing from the University of Michigan and is a Fulbright Scholar.

Dr. Peter W. Vaughan | Chair of the Board, Canada Health Infoway, Deputy Minister of Health, Nova Scotia (Retired) Dr. Peter W. Vaughan is Chair of the Board of Directors, Canada Health Infoway, Board member SCAN Health (supply chain advancement network), and member of the World Health Innovation Network Advisory Council, University of Windsor, Odette School of Business. He is the former Deputy Minister of Health and Wellness, Province of Nova, former CEO of South Shore District Health Authority, former Chair of the Board, Accreditation Canada, former CEO of the Canadian Medical Association, and former President of WebMD Canada. He is also the former Colonel Commandant, Royal Canadian Medical Services and has been an emergency physician, family physician, and RCAF Flight Surgeon.
