Groups from all over the world will converge on St. Peter’s square to take part in the only Marian event scheduled during the Year of Faith, and Radio Maria will be present to follow such an important event for the universal Church.

In the evening, the pilgrims will move to the Shrine of Divine Love, where there will be a moment of prayer “With Mary beyond the night” which will include a multilingual recital of the Rosary to which all Marian shrines worldwide will be linked up.

On 30th September we will know the canonisation date of the Popes

he Consistory will meet on Monday 30th September when Pope Francis will announce the canonisation date for the two Pontiffs.

Blessed John XXIII (aka Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli) was elected Pope on 28th October 1958, his pontificate lasted 5 years. In 1962, he started the

works for Vatican Council II. He was beatified on 3rd September 2000.

Blessed John Paul II, (Karol Wojtyla) was elected on 16th October 1978, his Pontificate lasted more than 26 years.

He was the first Polish priest.

He was beatified on 1st May 2011, just 6 years after his death.

The Pontifical Council for the New Evangelisation has estimated that, so far, almost 6 million pilgrims have arrived in Rome for the Year of Faith.

This number is destined to increase thanks also to the final appointments of the calendar: Family day on 26th and 27th October and the Celebration, planned for 24th November, to Close the Year of Faith.

In an open and direct manner, as Monsignor Arenas sent “a warm greeting to Radio Maria listeners”, he pointed out the reasons that inspired Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI to declare the Year of Faith. “It was necessary to recover the essential part of our Christian Faith, becoming aware of what is happening in the current world”.

In this celebratory setting we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vatican Council II, which “encourages us to make a change – the prelate added - on how we are applying the great constitutions and decrees which emerged from the conciliary discussions”.

Faith, looking at Mary, so that with Her we can see what the route of our faith has been during this year.

THE POPE WILL PAY HOMAGE TO ST. FRANCIS

On 4th October this year, the day on which we remember the patron saint of Italy, Saint Francis, Pope Bergoglio will visit Assisi to pay homage to the place in which the son of the rich merchant Pietro di Bernardone lived eight centuries ago.

300 thousand pilgrims wil be on hand to welcome the Pope, who has chosen to call himself by the same name.

ne of the cornerstones of the identity of Radio Maria is faithfulness to the Magisterium which becomes tangible not only in the editorial policy, but also in the special attention w i t h which the key ecclesiastical events are offered to its listeners, allowing them to remain united to the Pope from any part of the world. This is what happened on the occasion of the peace vigil announced

by Pope Francis, who decided to respond to the tragic scenes of the conflict in Syria with the most powerful arms: prayer and fasting. In his dramatic appeal during the Angelus on 1st September Pope Francis wanted to make himself “interpreter of the call that rises from each corner of the Earth, from each race, from the heart of each person, from the only large family which is humanity, with growing anguish: it is the call for peace!”. Saturday 7th September, chosen by the Pope as vigil of the Nativity of Mary (whom the Pope calls upon ever-

More than four hours of prayer marked by the Holy Rosary, the Blessed Sacrament and the Office of the Readings to “recompose the relationships of coexistence in justice and love” - as Blessed John XXIII had said in similar tragic situations. Our World Family could not miss out on this great mobilisation for peace contributing, through the airwaves, to joining the five continents under the watchful eye of Mary and the guidance of Peter’s successor who has invited everyone to look at the Cross: “There we can see God’s reply: violence is not answered with violence, death is not answered with the language of death. In the silence of the Cross the uproar of weapons ceases and the language of reconciliation, forgiveness, dialogue and peace is spoken”.

From Mariathon...to Mariathon

The 2014 edition will be held on 9th, 10th and 11th May

hen a good idea is born, others immediately follow. The same principle emerged from the Mariathon worldwide event, held from 8th to 12th May of this year and which involved all the World Family of Radio Maria. Mariathon 2013 was the first experience of a worldwide Mariathon, and turned out to be a symphony in which the radios, volunteers and tens of thousands of listeners participated together for an important missionary work...it was a great experience, involving and emotional, which has also led to an important contribution to the spiritual unity of our worldwide family of Radio Maria. Now that we have more experience and know the greatness of this worldwide event, we are ready to take off again, with the announcement of the date of the next Worldwide Mariathon, which will be held on 9th, 10th,11th May 2014, to make a further step forward in taking Radio Maria to those countries where there is none. As we know, a long road still lies ahead and the goal to gather the funds to support the opening of all the 11 new Radio Maria stations is due to be accomplished within 3 years. Here is a brief brief summary of Mariathon 2013 which we wish to share with you. Over 60 countries in the world took part in this event with the involvement of tens of thousands of volunteers and

The equipment used for the WYD in Rio hundreds of thousands of listeners, who have donated more than 1,000,000 Euro to accomplish a first part of the important project to set up Radio Maria in 11 countries which have been waiting for some time to receive this great gift. The goodness of this brotherly charity and love has been highlighted even more by the joy experienced in receiving the well-wishing message sent directly by Pope Francis, on Saturday 11th May 2013 (you can hear it on the WFRM youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/use r/WORLDFAMILYRM) .

This is what has briefly emerged in 2013.

What was appreciated the most by the Radio Maria stations?

• The missionary spirit of the event • The worldwide unity of Radio Maria, closely-knit into one large family that shares the only goal of peace and faith • The enthusiasm of listeners • The world link-ups • The joint work with o t h e r R a d i o Maria stations What are the key suggestions for Mariathon 2014?

• Start organising the event early • Give flexibility as to the date for radio stations which, on the same days of the Mariathon, have other events planned and cannot be rescheduled.

• Proceed with clear and simple communications at scheduled times • Suggest that radio stations prepare a programming schedule for the Mariathon • Increase the number of world link-ups • Provide advance training to radio stations which request it, on microphone presenting during Mariathon 2014 and on how to make listeners aware so that they may make donations • Produce streaming contents which can be used by the radio stations, above all talks by Father Livio and President Ferrario.

• Receive the administrative messages and fund raising goals in advance.

• Improve the technical support of the world and continental link-ups • Make photos and materials available on the progress of works funded by the Mariathon.

We ask you for your prayers and greatest commitment to continue this important mission.

rom the press room, fitted out in the Fort of Copacabana, the World Family assured several services to all Radio Maria stations worldwide. In audio streaming we broadcast the key events of WYD in Rio, with translations and comments in four languages. All the radio stations involved could use these digital audio signals, to be able to rebroadcast them in their own countries through the satellite uplink of each Radio Maria. In addition to the mixers and microphones, two digital Commander Tieline Codecs were used (equipment for audio transmission in VOIP streaming, with which all Radio Maria stations worldwide are equipped), and a portable Inmarsat BGAN satellite terminal as a backup line in case of lack of Internet connection at the event location due to unpredictable circumstances.

A dedicated website (www.rio2013.radiomaria.or g) was created, from which each station was able to upload all the material produced on a daily basis. All the events with the Holy Father, the daily radio bulletin, the press conferences of Father Lombardi, the interviews and the testimonies of the pilgrims from all over the world, in addition to numerous photos and videos, were recorded.
