IT’S TIME FOR BALANCE LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: It is a time for great change, a time for humanity to come together, a time to break boundaries and barriers, a time to work together as one, a time to lose the ties that bind us to ideologies of destruction and backward natural evolution, a time to open our minds to a new way of thinking and a new way of living. We need to establish a new way of interacting with each other as a human race in conjunction with mother nature and all the life that inhabits her. Without this balance we cannot sustain a healthy planet for us all to call home. David Attenborough’s approaching new series is called ‘Seven Worlds, One Planet’. It is based on the fact we have seven continents, Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America, all making up one world.

Around the world humans tend to fight over many natural resources, beliefs and religions as we have done for many thousands of years. We at WORLD EQUAL believe that it is time for a realignment of all nations, all humanity and all living creatures to come together as one to clean up our environment. Climate change has made its presence known to the masses. The earth is telling us it is tired and sick, that many human beings need to change their habits and ways of living to protect and preserve its land, water and air for future generations. Technology is playing a huge part in the ‘balance’ and escalation of awareness but it also brings with it a lot of unnecessary noise. We need to address the balance between human life and the machines we create, between virtual life and real life.

We are at the beginning of new frontiers and rebirth, in a sense it’s an awakening, so let’s use this time wisely. Let’s not waste time creating more non-recyclable, disposable waste.

Communities of like-minded people are coming together worldwide and leading the way to change.

For future generations of humanity and nature to thrive in a healthy environment we need to learn from past teachings and the history of our ancestors.

We must set an example and come together to pave the way forward and document this very important time in the history of our planet.

Artists have always been a huge part of documenting our history. It is time to come together and let Equality and Quality Unify Art with Love. Let’s strive to bring an end to war, bring more peace love and balance into the world and live alongside each other respectfully.. There is hope for future generations. The connectivity we have today via the Internet is bringing the younger generation together like never before. Giving them the nudge towards becoming more ethnically and religiously blind, encouraging them to treat each other as one, where negative racial borders and barriers don’t exist.

A time for Balance Being ‘equal’ does not mean being exactly the same. The alternative fashion and arts landscape is densely rich with many different forms of creative artistic nutrients. Diversity is what keeps everything interesting and forward moving on an even or equal keel. For example lets look at London or Belfast Alternative Fashion Week. These kind of shows remind me of the enigmatic spectacle we call ‘The Great Barrier Reef’. Not only does the reef combine colourful and sculptural visual aesthetic magnificence through its diversity of species, it functions also as a balanced, relatively harmonious ecosystem because of its diversity. It’s preservation and future depends on the equilibrium that thriving diversity creates. Being equal does not necessarily mean you have to be the same as each other and it is with this formula that people from many different backgrounds, shapes and sizes, colours and creeds, designers with both commercial and alternative orientations are able to celebrate their talents in a relatively harmoniously friendly yet competitive manner within the alternative fashion shows, where respect for ones neighbouring talent is given, understood and appreciated, competed against or collaborated with. This “Great Alternative Reef” if you like is both hugely attractive and inspirational on many levels and like the Great Barrier Reef we must nurture it and protect it. Keep Your Planet Tidy! A wonderful thing happens when you finally accept what the little voice inside you has been telling you for years that, this life is YOURS. You start to see everything differently when you take that knowledge on-board. You start to live. It’s an amazing feeling to wake up each morning knowing that you will choose how your day plays out. Oh, that’s the first thing… dump the words ‘must’ and ‘have-to’ and try replacing them with ‘choose’.

Things become easier once you start choosing. You choose to go to work. You choose to pay the phone bill. You choose to attend that audition. I know, I know you can’t NOT pay the bills, but telling yourself that you are choosing to pay them, takes away the power they have to make you feel like some kind of slave. So... pick your day. Today would be a good time but tomorrows okay too. Wake up. Take some time to locate the love that’s in all of us. Relish the thought that you’re alive. Have some breakfast (coffee and cigarette gets me going but feel free to have something healthier) and go out into your world. Feel the air flowing into you. Listen. Smile at everyone-the homeless lady on the corner, that guy in the grey suit rushing somewhere, the kid playing ball against the wall, everyone. You never know when your smile is going to be the thing that gets someone through the day. Your happiness could be the reason someone doesn’t jump tonight. You are important. Of course, we cant please all the people all of the time. Not everyone has found their inner sunshine yet. But answer anger with love, answer hate with compassion and answer spite with patience, it’s good medicine. It cures the ones who are afraid that showing love may be perceived as a weakness. That natural glow you have when you’re being positive stays with people. When I was homeless, a guy, who I assumed had it made… he had GREAT shoes, handmade I guessed, brought me a cup of coffee and a pack of smokes every week day. He always asked if I was okay. The thing I remember the most about him was that his smile was genuine. For the couple of minutes he talked to me each day it was like having the sunshine on my face. I didn’t know anything about him, he never offered any information and I never asked.

Anyway, a year or so later, I was doing OK. I’d gotten a place to live and a job spinning records at a club. At some point one night, I was taking a break and saw this guy. I was sure it was him, so I went and thanked him, his hair was shorter and he didn’t have the Italian shoes on, I remembered the smile. Bask in the Light of your uniqueness. There are billions of people in our world and each one of them different! That is mind blowing! Blessed are the strange, the weird, the unusual, the different, for the world is truly ours. We change the world by our very existence. We heal our world with love, we enhance our world with our laughter and we light our world with our kindness. When you get back home tonight, sit there with your hot chocolate, or your glass of wine and recall how your day went, remember the faces and places, feel the love in your heart (maybe notice it’s a little stronger because of the smiles you got back). Today you participated fully in life. Relax, give YOURSELF a smile. Sink into your dreams, imagine all the possibilities and rest easy. You get to do it all again tomorrow and forever! Albert Camus, the existential French writer, wrote this… “In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love. In the midst of tears, I found there was within me, an invincible smile. In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm”. I realised, through it all, that in the midst of winter, there was, within me, an invincible summer and that makes me happy, for it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me there is something stronger, something better, pushing right back. Do you recognise yourself… ?

Q1. The Hendrix name is synonymous with music and arts – where did healing and mental health come in for you? A1. Nobody is ever surprised to see that I am an avantgarde artist, composer, musician and storyteller. What does surprise them is that I am a Shamanic practitioner and have been for over thirty years *laughing* the curiosity really comes through when I share that with them. I have my own TAYO Healing Centre and TAYO Counselling Service and run yearly retreats and weekend meditation workshops and motivational talks. All of which, I have done since 2000. I also have a Youth Foundation called TaYouth (Tayo Irvine Hendrix Youth Foundation), which is self-funded. For me, helping young people to leave gangs and join the world is paramount. I believe that if we do NOT help the youth of today, we will all suffer the consequences and we, and they, deserve better. When I leave this world, I hope, like my parents before me, to leave it having helped to make it a better world through mindfulness and Shamanism and of course MUSIC and Arts.

Maybe we will look at that another day. I am meeting an American Doctor in coming days to help work on this very subject matter. She is a Medical Doctor and Compound Pharmacist, in fact like me she is one of the very few in the world who does what she does. We are hoping to work together to help generate a new holistic and shamanic approach to medicine.

When you think of the human body what is the very first sound you hear in life…The first sound you hear in your mothers womb is the heart-beat and the last sound the adult hears as it leaves the human body is the heart beat.

Q3. Your website tayohealing.com is extremely interesting and talks a lot about your life and career as a Shamanic type healer which we find really intriguing. Could you tell EQUAL and it’s readers, what TAYO Healing is all about? A3. Tayo Healing Centre was set up in 1993 in honour of my beloved mother Dorothea. It is there to help people overcome physical and emotional issues – which we ALL have. As a Shamanic Practitioner and Psychotherapist I lead a ‘less ordinary’ life and am blessed to be able to walk whichever path I choose. I choose to walk the path of spiritual enlightenment, truth and healing. I realise for some that is confusing when my life could be so glamorous but to me my journey was chosen for me. I am blessed that at least it included music and sound in that mix.

So are you really surprised that rhythm plays such a huge part, in fact rules our physical body and life. When the heart beats erratic, it’s called a heart attack! Many people say that music heals their soul but in reality, most don’t actually know how that happens or why. I do. It is the algorithms within us that connect and vibrate to help the physical body heal itself. We are ALL energy pure and simple. But that is too long for this interview.

Q2. Does music impact the physical & emotional body? A2. Yes. It heals physically and mentally. My life has been a journey of pain, learning, love and laughter. In reality healing and especially mental health are a big part of who I am and the direction in which my life has gone. The healing world crosses over through drum beats / heart beats and rhythms.

Along the way I have had constant help and support from my mother and father in the spirit realm. I believe we live many lives that is why it is so important to me to learn so much and leave a legacy behind. It’s like school, ou finish one class and go on to another in our case it is another lifetime.

Reincarnation rebirth whatever you want to call it. So, I have studied everything I can to learn and be a better practitioner. I don’t like using labels because I don’t believe you ever see the full truth of any individual. We are more than the labels we are given but I know the labels others attach to me are many, from Shaman to medium to light worker.

Q4. Tell us more of the inspiration behind this journey into healing people? A4. Pain crossed my path for the first time when I was no more than three years old. That was followed by more death; my father, my boyfriend, my mother. I know what pain looks like. That is why I try to help others who are going through pain and heartache because I think we all deserve to be able to live free of questions that come with that pain. I am Shaman first, drummer second, because that is who I was born to be. Healing and music kicked in at just three years of age when I was given a shamanic drum by my father and taught how to connect that drum to a physical heartbeat. That was my first interaction with music soothing the physical body. If I get stressed, I turn to music to lower my heartbeat. This passion for music continued into my youth and guided by my mother, I learnt to play various instruments drums, guitar, piano, vocals and studied my passion for shamanic healing. My core belief – the mind builds the physical result, reflects that life is an on-going lesson from which we are constantly learning and growing. 18

I understand people always want to know what I do and how and pin a label on you but that is where it gets confusing for many people. I am a qualified Reiki Master, Psychotherapist, Hypnotherapist and Counsellor. All of these things I learnt to try to understand my friends passing and how anyone could feel so low to take their own life. The inspiration behind the journey into healing people comes very much from the training my parents gave me to heal myself and silence my own mind. Between the silence and the talking I get there! I am a Motivational Speaker too. In 2015 I gave my first motivational/music talk at LA’s ‘Global Rock Summit’, alongside rocks elite, Jerry Greenberg and Larry King.

It was such an honest and open talk that I reduced the room to tears and got a standing ovation, which was such an honour. Not because I was amazing but because I understood their pain. But I was able to share that pain starts us on many a journey. I was able to tell them they, could be the next Jimi Hendrix if they simply took their pain or loss and put it into something creative. We don’t all have an easy journey. Mine wasn’t easy. Neither was my fathers or mothers. I was able to share with them we ALL have pain but it isn’t about not having pain it is about learning something from every cut, the deeper the cut the more we learn. These are the reasons I journey into healing as you call it. It is because I want to help people. I want them to know they are NOT ALONE! It is amazing to see someone start to live without fear, to live their own authentic inner beat and it is an honour to be part of THAT growth. I want people to know they are not defined by others 20

however iconic they may or may not be. We are defined by the journey we take and the footsteps we make in this life. So, if I can stop and help someone in pain why wouldn’t I? Q5. Have you healed many people? A5. I don’t ‘heal’ people, they heal themselves with a clearer understanding of ‘self’. I have worked with thousands of people as you can imagine over a thirtyyear period. I have seen people recover from all sorts of ailments. We often work with cancer, mental health trauma, grief and the pressures of everyday life. Social media and the current state of the world leaves people in a confused state of being and truly has a lot to answer for these days. Q6. Do you have any other talents? I am guessing music is in there somewhere? A6. I am a creative being first and foremost like most people so within this little mind there are many, many sparks that light up. I have played music much of my life, from the moment I was given my first drum from my father, a drum I still have to this day and has been

played on all my tracks. I write, lyrics, poems and am a published author and have been recently creating artwork for an upcoming exhibition later this month August 2019. The art has been so well received that I am amazed and honoured to be honest. But I think it will also become a vehicle for healing art to help people balance energy within their homes. Ultimately, I am determined to help people feel empowered in their lives. I speak to motivate people and inspire our children too. Whether that is with my own TaYouth Foundation or at a school around the world, or at a Rock ’n’ Roll seminar, it is all the same to me. So, I guess you could say I have many strings to my bow. That is what I mean by we are what we ARE not what people want us to be. We are very complex beings. It has taken me a long time to realise that but I am what I am and I won’t be changing any time soon. Q7. You are the author of a children’s book called “Hummingland”; please tell us more about the inspiration behind this book and will there be more books to follow, maybe even a television series?

A7. Hummingland came about from a dream I had during a fast for Lent. I was on day 10 of drinking only water when the dream came and all the books came in the same dream and the following day when I woke I wrote the stories down. They came through me from my parents. “Hummingland” is a book about musical instruments and mindfulness and based on my childhood drum. ‘Drum. me’ won The Sylvia Anderson Award for “Children’s Author 2018” recently and launched in Singapore to glowing reviews last year. Yes, there will be more books it is a five book series called ‘The Naughty Cello’ and the first introductory book is “Hummingland”. We have been asked to consider it for a TV show and such but I am a great believer in one step at a time. Rush at everything and nothing gets done. grass and mountains, broccoli, peas and kale. I wouldn’t mind living in “Hummingland” where the sun shines 365 days a year and there are colourful characters of all ages with stories to tell.

‘Drum.me’, ‘Ceelloo’ and ‘Angle’ are three such characters who, come together sharing their daily life lessons and learnings. These three friends attend ‘TickTock Music School’ where they are taught the importance of TIME and acceptance. As they go through life, they learn how to make powerful choices through tapping into their own unique living beat. One of the things I think is so important for children, is to learn is that we must accept each other if we are to stand safely apart from each other. In “Hummingland” all of the instruments understand they must first learn to love and respect other instruments to live and play in harmony, for each play a unique part in the orchestra of life. “Hummingland” teaches us all life lessons in mindfulness. Reminding us of the importance of friendship, love and honesty. That it takes all sorts of instruments to create a beauty – a full orchestra and until we accept others we can never have a peaceful, beautiful world. Children are our future so we must help them to accept others. 24

Q8. Who was the greatest influence on the direction of your career? A8. Nature or nurture? My life lessons started VERY early. So, I am not sure if that influenced my journey or my DNA influenced it. My mother was a huge influence in my day-to-day life, and my father providing me with Drum. Without them both I would truly be different, as would you if your parents were different. Music and healing are part of who I am. I believe it was always destined to be that combination. I couldn’t imagine living anything but a life less ordinary. Q9. Like many millions of people around the world I had the fortunate pleasure to be raised on a musical diet Rock’n Roll among other genres at an early age in life. I even remember where and what age I was when I first heard Jimi Hendrix play. It was almost thirty years ago and I was a young teenager babysitting for my aunts and uncles who gave me some vinyl records and cassette tape recordings from the radio for me to listen to while they were away.

They were mostly of Jimi Hendrix. My father regularly played Jimi Hendrix, Eagles, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Mike Oldfield music in the back garden on sunny summer days as we’d relax and let our imaginations roam free. He taught me some art & guitar. Sadly, he died suddenly of a heart attack in June 2018 at sixty two years of age. However, the fondest memories I have of my father John Joe, were those times. Jimi Hendrix inspired me in a profoundly positive way to write & sing songs, dress cool, learn the guitar and form bands. Now whenever I hear your father’s music it has an added effect on me now.

It feels like a form of healing because it connects me to happy memories of my father. The wildly creative and freeness of Jimi’s style of playing took us away to a special place in our minds. Healing people is something to me that seems to run in the Hendrix family. Do you agree, or is it just a coincidence you are both healers? Was you mother a healer too? A9. Aaahhh there was only one Jimi and I am glad he and music shared part of your journey too. My mother was a healer yes. My parents where both healers in their own way. I had a great understanding of the power of LOVE from a very early age and the power of music to heal the soul was very important. Music has a colour, music has a sound and music has a vibration. NEVER underestimate the power of music. It heals my soul for sure. Q10. I found some of your songs on youtube and you have a great voice, there is a lot of power and gentleness all rolled into one. Will we get to hear more music from Tayo Irvine Hendrix in the future?

A10. Thank you Kieran. I loved doing my music, “Experience This”, “Crazy Dayze”, “Champion” and “We Shall Overcome” for sure. I also do meditation music for my private clients too. I am currently working on music to go with my paintings for my art exhibition later this year. However, there will be no vocals or very limited if there is. This is more about mindfulness and in truth music needs no vocal to heal the soul it has a voice all of its own. This project is a healing project for my own journey, which I may or may not share with the world. Only time will tell. Q11. How many instruments do you play? A11. I play various instruments five or six in total. Now I currently have a cello residing at the end of my bed. 25

Q12. I have heard you performed at Downing Street in London once before. What kind of performance was it? A12. I was invited to Downing Street after the London Riots in 2011 by my friend Jo and Sam Cameron. It was at that reception we talked about me returning to music to help raise money for a charity and to drum at the London Olympics 2012.

A15. LOVE. My strongest memory from childhood is happiness from my music and family. Sadness from fire and loss. As I say, I learnt very early in my journey what it was to be a healer. Most healers have suffered loss and most healers have an ability to understand loss. The one thing I know through all the pain MUSIC HEALS MY SOUL!

Q13. Would you love to see an artist become a President or Prime Minister someday? I know I would, maybe it would speed up the healing process of the world and mankind a bit? A13. Barak Obama was from the south side so he was very and still is very musical and had some wonderful first time events for music and black people throughout his Presidency. I would like to see a creative person become UK Prime Minister because with creativity comes more understanding and empathy. We truly need that empathy right now. Politics has gone mad!

Q16. Who are your top five female and male performers of all time? A16. Each individual performer is different so I think it would be unfair to say who my top five are. I believe anybody who creates deserves to be recognised. So, I tip my hat to any of you out there who are holding the flame for us all. Whether you create music, art, writings, are good with numbers or simply are holding your life together whilst supporting another being or through a mental health challenge...we are ALL performing to the best of our ability and I salute YOU all for that.

Q14. What art or creative work do you most enjoying doing? A14. I love doing anything creative, work from healing to music from swimming to painting. I swim most days preparing myself to swim the English Channel and Gibralta Straight. I don’t think it matters ‘what you do in life’ as long as you are happy. If you get to tap into your own authentic beat and can have a peaceful mind you are happy. For me my healing work helps me daily. Connecting my mind to spirit each day helps me to tap into my soul. Swimming helps me to feel fitter within my physical body and music and art heals my mind of any stresses that find themselves there on a day to day basis. This is MY ‘holy trinity’ and it heals me at the core of my being mind/body and soul daily. Q15. What’s your strongest memory of your childhood? 26

Q17. There seems to be a big movement of vegans going on out there. Are you a vegetarian? A17. I have been many things over the years. I think the most important thing is how you source food. Ethically sourced counts, same with clothing and life in general. Q18. What is your dream project or have you already accomplished it? A18. Everything I do I love nowadays. I am currently working on two projects that I really love which is creating art. The “Hummingland” project is wonderful. Knowing that others will be influenced by music in their lives really makes me happy. I know for me when my father Jimi gave me my drum I thought it was the most amazing thing I had received, then I learnt to sing and realised the voice is a powerful tool as is writing, be that lyrics, poems or simply daily dumps as I get clients to write now. underestimate the power of your own mind and where IT CAN TAKE YOU. Q19. What is your top two pieces of advice given to you over the years? A19. ‘When someone shows you who they are the FIRST time believe them!’. ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway!’. Q20. Have you a favourite mantra or code you follow? A20. If something doesn’t feel right to YOU, it probably isn’t right FOR you! Q21. If you had a magic lamp what would be your three wishes? A21. I would simply focus on NOW and creating the best energy I can to surround myself. From a global perspective it would be that we found one LOVE and compassion and then perhaps we would stop judging each other so harshly. We have no idea what that person has gone through in that day and yet we are busy picking faults and pointing fingers. It’s not good and our children are learning the hard way. Hummingland teaches them to think for themselves and that if something doesn’t sound right to them... it may not be! Q22. I read that your healing focuses on “The NOW” but if you had a time machine what would be the first three things you would do with it and remember, you can travel into the future as well as the past? A22. Interesting question. But the reality is the NOW is all we have. If I changed the past that would change the present , the ‘NOW’ and if I went forward to influence the future that would change the present ‘NOW’ too. So what I would suggest is that we all appreciate what we currently have and if we don’t like something change it and immediately start working to create a future you want. The moment of NOW is creating the future so that is the most important point I would make here. 27

Q23. For those who may not know, could you explain to us what Shamanism is exactly, where does this name come from and how did you become or realise you were a Shaman. For example, did you study to be a Shaman or did other people tell you that they felt you were one? A23. Shamanism works within spirit realms and energy. It’s an ancient form of spiritual healing that is present in cultures all around the globe. Feel free to have a look on my website to learn more about it: tayohealing.com I became a Shaman after a near death experience and being given the last rites in my twenties after my life changing loss. Q24. What is your favourite original song that you wrote and your favourite song that you love to cover? A24. “CHAMPION” is a favourite because of how it inspired my Youth Foundation kids. In reality I don’t have favourites each track is different. That’s a little like saying, so Tayo who do you like most, your son or daughter. If I had a favourite, I would have nothing else to be working towards. But “Champion” will always hold a special place in my heart, because it is about life’s struggle and it is our anthem song for my TaYouth Foundation. It is the song that brought me back to music after the 10 Downing Street meeting. It was the song they wanted to do for the London Olympics and the one that would inspire the youth of London to rise to their feet and meet the day with courage. In the words of TaYouth to replace the knife with knowledge. “Champion” inspired that and still does. Life is hard but there IS a champion in each of us. We just need to tap into us and find him/her. Q25. Will you be releasing any original songs in the near future? A25. Yes I am releasing Sound Art with my Heartbeat Art Exhibition this August. ‘April LOVE’ is the name of the piece and it contains four tracks. April Love, Dragonfly, Taxi to Pimlico and Psalm Dayo. Beautiful tracks I find very healing. You will like them I think. Q26. What is the highlight of your career in either music, being an author or in healing people? 28


A26. I have been blessed to have many highlights in my career but in my life my highlights have been my children, my family and all the love that came from BOTH. Outside of those the highlight was at a flashmob in London TaYouth back in 2012 and the kids (many of them ex-gang members) had a wonderful time. I remember one boy talking to another boy on the float back to the centre and he was telling one of my youth foundation boys about an odd feeling that he had never felt before. Leon asked him a few questions then went on to explain ‘that’s PRIDE man…that’s pride’ I was blown away. I got off the float in tears with my musicians, to see these two boys who only months before may have been fighting in the street, standing together feeling proud of themselves was such a privilege to witness. I will remember that moment forever. My musician and I got off the float quietly and hugged each other without words. Q27. What kind of a legacy would you like to leave behind you? A27. LOVE is all we need to leave behind. As my parents did before me. I will leave love. We touch people and are touched by people and with every stroke we find LOVE. Q28. Your portraits are excellent and very interesting, it was an honour to have been invited and attend the launch of your recent Art exhibition, it was an amazing experience! What’s next? A28. The recent art exhibition called “Heartbeat” in Stockholm on Friday 29th September went very well indeed, I understand it will tour the USA in time too. Yes the portraits are rather special especially Jimi and Lemmy which has a unique story behind that one too. Bernadette Hagans Model & Amputee Role Model. Bernadette Hagans is a young woman from Belfast Northern Ireland who in her early twenties has lost her leg to an extremely rare form of cancer. With an incredible attitude of positivity Bernadette has taken the change very well surprising even her doctors. She has adapted to a completely new way of life. Her inspirational drive has led her to become a model for the first time. In fact she is now one of the new faces of a retail campaign. Bernadette has a bright future ahead of her and is a shining example that life after trauma like this can continue to be fruitful. This has made Bernadette a wonderful role model on many levels as she inspires others around with her amazing personality and positive attitude. If that was not enough, the magic of coincidence played a beautiful part in a recent photo shoot for Bernadette. It is well know Prince Harry plays a major role in helping people with amputations. Around his wedding to Megan Markle they we’re both made Baron and Baroness of the harbour town of Kilkeel in Northern Ireland. 32

This is where one of Bernadette’s recent photo-shoots and television interviews for the BBC took place, on a sunny day in a beautiful blue bell forest in Kilkeel. Not only was this a lovely coincidence, on that day an extremely rare white/blue bell blossomed for the first time. The odds of these two extremely rare conditions in both a person and a plant crossing paths we’re at least a million to one. Bernadette was enchanted as we’re the entire photography team and camera crew. Bernadette had no problem in posing for a quick photo beside it with her mobile phone. It inspired the poem ‘Natural Beauty’

She was BIFA nominated and has won several awards including Best Short at Soho Rushes Short Film Festival with her short film “Sis”…her first feature film “Pin Cushion” has received critical acclaim and won awards globally, making her one of the top rising star female film makers in the United Kingdom. Q1. Hello Deborah, we have watched your film “Pin Cushion” and it is superb! Congratulations on bringing it to the big screen. It was at times reliving the past for us, as we too have sadly been victims of bullying in some way or other. What was your inspiration for making this film? A1. Thank you! My inspiration came from being bullied at school aged eleven. It affected me a lot and I found that even as an adult, I often struggled with feelings of helplessness so I wanted to explore those feelings and that experience to try and make sense of it. I’m sorry you have experienced bullying yourself. I wanted to make a film about it because you feel you’re the only one, because I think it’s so humiliating that we don’t talk about it. It can make life very lonely. It was only after making it that I realised how common it was. I had thought I was in the minority and was kind of saying ‘this is how I feel/ have felt about life and if there’s anyone else out there

who recognises themselves, this is a secret hug from me to you.’ I was astonished how many people caught that hug. Q2. Where did you come up with the character for the mother with the club foot and hunchback? A young boy in the film mocks her saying “The Bells, The Bells” which is a quote from the ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’. Was there influence from this or is the mother based on a real life character you knew of? A2. It was partly influenced by a ‘hunchbacked’ man who was a character in my village growing up. Also, this character fitted in very nicely with the fairytale aspect and aesthetic I wanted to present. I felt that if I made it as a sort of fairytale, I could go darker and deeper, because fairy-tales are often brutal. If I told this story as say, social realism, it would be too bleak and miserable. It wouldn’t feel very creative for me either. 39

Q3. The overall aesthetic look of the film is very impressive, you can tell straight away we are in for something special just by the visuals. How were you able to achieve this? A3. Thank you. This again is to do with wanting to create a ‘world’, one in which everything is heightened, so we knew straight away this was ‘storytelling’ rather than ‘real life.’ I was very much influenced by the Hungarian writer Agota Kristof. I loved how she was very blunt in her writing and wrote very dark stuff as a fairy-tale. She would have characters called things like Harelip. I felt very thrilled when I read her! Q4. “Pin Cushion” is very touching, tragic and brings us all back to a time in our lives when we have either experienced or seen bullying happen. With an incredible ending that leaves you speechless! We think it will inspire others not to bully. Do you? A4. I have no idea. I think I wanted to explore who we are behind our masks and labels. Like “Who is the girl behind the school slag?” “Who is the character behind the school bully?” As well as the inner person ‘local hunchback.’ Q5. What was your educational background; was it in the Arts or Film in particular? How did your journey to film begin? A5. I left school at fifteen without any qualifications and then had my daughter when I was aged seventeen. I felt pretty bad about myself and had low self esteem. Then when I was aged about twenty three, I heard that my local college were doing access courses, where you could go and do a year’s course and get a certificate equivalent to A levels, then go to University. I really wanted to become an English teacher, so I could set a good example for my daughter and so she would grow up with good self esteem. There, I took a module in Creative Writing and became hooked! I finished my BA, then did an MA and then wrote while I temped. Eventually I got to make a short film with a regional arts agency, EM Media. The script I wrote became my first short film, ‘Lady Margaret’. I had expected to be teamed up with a director but the executive producer told me that I would be directing it. I totally panicked, because I had no idea what a director’s duties entailed. But my Dad had just died, so the worst thing had already happened… 40

Q6. Was “Pin Cushion” based on/adapted from a book or was it an original screenplay? A6. It was an original screenplay. Q7. Were you ever bullied as a young woman in the way it is shown in your film? A7. Yes, kind of. I would say that Pin Cushion is an ‘emotional autobiography’ rather than a literal one though. Q8. One of the other fantastic things about “Pin Cushion” is that it highlights how bullying can continue on into adulthood. This shows how they never really mature and reminds us of how tough the long journey of life can be for some people. In this case for the mother it was never ending. Did you experience bullying much in adulthood or observe it? A8. Both. I have found that once you’ve been bullied it can be difficult to stand up for oneself, or be assertive, because of the trauma. In fact adult bullying can be worse in some ways, because you can’t get your Mum to go and sort out a bully say, if you’re thirty years old. Q9. We would love to go into detail but do not want to spoil it for anyone who watches the film (especially the ending by giving it away). Was it hard to make that ending because it was a total head bender, our moral compass went spinning in every direction at the one time, was yours too when writing those final scenes? A9. It felt like that was the natural and inevitable ending. The one that gave me the most catharsis. I did try alternative endings but I never quite believed them. I felt it was important not to betray myself. I found my execs were very supportive of the ending actually. The film is a tragic comedy of sorts and by their nature tragedies usually have challenging endings. Just look at Romeo and Juliet. Q10. The cast were magnificent. Every person played their parts brilliantly. How were you able to pick such a good cast? A10. Thank you. They were all wonderful and I was in awe of their talents, boldness and bravery. We worked with some very talented casting people and together found the people who felt like they were right. I use my belly as a guide while film-making and writing.

It’s particularly important to listen to my gut during casing. My motto is “Belly Knows Best!” Q11. Word around the camp fire is Deborah Haywood is a rising star film director on her way to the top! How has “Pin Cushion” been received so far? Where and who has seen it that can help take you to the next level? A11. That’s good to hear! It has been so well received. Better than I could have ever imagined. It premièred and opened ‘Critics Week’ at the Venice Film Festival and got four star reviews. It was ‘Critic’s Choice’ in the New York Times. A substantial festival life followed by a cinematic release across about thirty cinemas in the UK as well as a tiny release in LA and NYC. I actually feel high when I think about it! What’s also great is the responses from audiences after screening the film and doing Q+A’s. Lots of people, young, old, of both genders have come up to me to thank me for making the film because they really resonated with it. We had lots of people sharing their own stories of being bullied. Q12. Have you any film plans for the future if this is your big break? What would you love to make a film about if you had the dream team at your disposal? A12. At the moment I’m writing a kind of romcom for children, also a surreal Gothic horror and a biopic about the artist Niki de Saint Phalle. I suppose my dream would be to make the ultimate love story, one that lasts and is remembered. Q13. Have you made many films (including shorts and documentaries) in the past? A13. I’ve made about five short films. The most popular one has been ‘Sis’, which did really well on the festival circuit which, won prizes and got nominated for a BIFA: youtube.com/watch? v=XejVV2VA_h8 Q14. The story focuses entirely on how nasty both young and adult women can be to each other in life? Was this a specific part of your vision; to focus on the female world of bullying and expose it? A14. I don’t think so. I didn’t really set out to deliberately have this vision. This is what seeped out of my subconscious when I started to write. 42

Q15. Did you have much support for the project in regards to funding, family, friends and professionals in the industry? Did it attract interest with ease or did you have a tough job in convincing people to get on board? As the writer and director your hands must have been incredibly full. How did you manage this? A15. I had a lot of support from my producer and my exec producers. I had a few setbacks along the way and it took ten years from starting to write it to getting it made. I found that once I was true to my vision and wrote from the heart rather than trying to second guess audiences etc., it all came together pretty quickly. It did feel pretty overwhelming at times but I kind of held my nose, closed my eyes and jumped into the water! Once we were making it, we were so busy that you kind of forget the fear and just become immersed in this wonderful creative intense bubble. Q16. As a female writer and director did you feel this was a more difficult journey due to the lack of female directors in the past? Are times changing in the industry? Would you say people in general were very supportive and respectful of your project as a female director? A16. I found people respectful while I was making “Pin Cushion”. Making films hasn’t been without its challenges but it’s hard to say if that’s because I’m a female filmmaker because I haven’t experienced making films as a male filmmaker. I really do get the feeling that it’s a good time for women to make films because the lack of them is being highlighted a lot at the moment. Born June 21, 1976, from Levitown New York, Dan is a singer/songwriter, producer, guitarist and bassist. He has played & performed with the bands Wolfpack Black, Blackgates, Mad Tandem, Anthrax, TRED and Inside Hollow. His own band is called ‘Dan Nelson and The Contention’. Playing regularly touring the States as well as on the New York scene Dan decided to get in touch with his roots and fly over the great pond from New York to the Emerald Island of Ireland. Playing several intimate gigs to rapturous cheers and applause with his trusty drummer Phil ‘The Ghost’ Deluxe, Dan Nelson and The Contention proved a huge hit with local people making way for a return in September 2019. Inheriting Kieran Sherry as their UK guitarist and backing vocalist along the way during these intimate gigs in Ireland, EQUAL Magazine was able to swing a photo shoot with professional portrait photographer Shelley Rodgers before their departure. Sonique Sonique’s formative years were infused with the sounds of her mums’ record collection. Every Sunday the house would be filled with the sounds of Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight, Otis Redding and Denice Williams. Her life philosophy is “Be the best or don’t bother” and with her music career, she’s certainly put that theory into practice! As singer and songwriter for Mark Moore’s “S’Express” she first entered the limelight, featuring on the hits “Nothing To Lose” (1990) and “Find ‘em, Fool ‘em, Forget ‘em”(1992)… she has since made her mark as a DJ, partly helped by her unique improvised singing. Her debut album, “Hear My Cry”, sold over a million copies in the United Kingdom alone. Her biggest hit single anthem “It Feels So Good” has sold millions around the world and she was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the first female solo artist to be No.1 for three consecutive weeks – the first in twenty two years since Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” in 1978! 49

Q1. I like your version of the classic “I Put A Spell On You” (beautiful singing and string riff in it by the way). It has been covered by greats such as Nina Simone & Credence Clearwater Revival. What inspired you to cover this song, how did it all happen, and did you re-write it all yourself? A1. A friend of mine loved it and suggested I do a cover version which was recorded in a North London studio in 1998…later on I performed it live at the Dance Star Awards with an orchestra. Most of us recognise you because of your international platinum selling hit for which you received many big awards for “It Feels So Good” and “Sky”. You have an amazing and memorable voice. For me in particular the choruses are fantastic especially with those catchy backing vocals going under your voice. They never get old. Did you write these songs yourself or was it a team effort? A2. I wrote all the lyrics by myself. The original mix was remixed by me known as the Sonique Break Beat Mix. Q3. Many of us in the 90’s were all so used to our guitars back then and the decks just came out of nowhere and took over the world? When did you start spinning them and is it true that you, we’re the only female DJ and biggest female DJ in the world at that time? A3. I started out in the mid-nineties, then later on I was the number one female DJ around the world flying all over in a private jet, top hotels and all the trimmings that go with being a superstar! Q4. So, you have been a DJ, producer, singer and songwriter for many years, can you play any other instruments other than decks? A4. I don’t play any musical instruments but I tried playing bass guitar in the studio which was used in “It Feels So Good”. Q5. How did you come to fall in love with music so much that it has led you into a career of music? A5. My mum was a dancer and I grew up listening 50

to Motown, the Sound Of Philadelphia, Michael Jackson , Aretha, Roberta Flack, Al Green but what really inspired Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” and my hero was Giorgio Moroder back in the day which is how my personal love started. Q6. Who was your favourite underground label and DJs and bands back in the day of trance, dance, house, acid music and so on? A6. Mute Records, Rhythm King; as for DJ’s Carl Cox, Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold Q7. Who had the coolest parties and where was the trendiest club to go to when you had the night off from performing in front of thousands of people? A7. “Manumission” in Ibiza in the nineties and in London “Astoria” in the eighties; as for cool parties I was the one spinning at them! Q8. When I was hearing your voice and beats on our ghetto blasters with “S Express” at house parties in the 90’s, I had long hair, ripped jeans, leather jacket, and a second hand guitar glued together (shell suits, caps and trainers were off limits!). It was almost a cardinal sin for a young heavy metal/ grunge/punk kid to admit to liking rave so we kept it a secret and pretended to hate it for a while. We even used to get beat up by ravers at the end of the night coming out of the clubs as we came out of our slowly diminishing rock bars. We would get called “Wobbly Heads” by the shaved head ravers because Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine grunge scene was exploding at the same time as the dance club scene. It was the craziest musical tug of war yet most uplifting time, to be honest I made sure I had the best of both worlds. Were those times as good for you as they were for us and what was the biggest highlight for you at that time; if you had a time machine would you go back and relive it all again? A8. I enjoyed dance as well as Indie music so both were influential to me. I even loved INXS and lots of rock music, not heavy metal, The Who and Led Zeppelin were awesome too!


Q9. I imagine after your Platinum International Hit “It Feels So Good” you had a lot of offers coming in. Did you ever turn down any big offers because you thought “Nah, the money is good but the music ain’t right?” A9. I did turn down a duet with Kylie which was only because didn’t like the song, but she is lovely lady. Q10. Are you married to the music? Would you consider yourself to be picky about what music you involve yourself with rather than say yes to everything that crosses your path? A10. Very picky and music is married to me! Q11. We spoke on the phone for a good hour and you said you were just out to lunch with John Lydon of PIL/ Public Image Limited, formerly know as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols. Is there a musical masterpiece bubbling behind the scenes between yourself and Johnny? Johnny seems to like his beats, moving from the Pistols to PIL with his amazing song “Rise” then there was the incredible “Open Up” with Leftfield. John has a harder, darker, aggressive and controversial edge to his music as opposed to your euphoric happier less controversial lyrics but they do say opposites attract as do likeminded people and you both have a great sense of style and fashion with a taste for beats, or are you just mates? A11. No, we are just friends. Q12. You sang on a version of one of the greatest songs to come out of the rave era called “Higher State Of Consciousness”. Who was this with and how did it come about? A12. It was through my old mate Judge Jules because we did work a lot together as he was at that doing a lot of remixes and I did all the vocals for him on many other tracks.

Let’s pretend that music was about to be banned for five years and we all had to sing our last ten songs, what five songs of your own and five songs of someone else would you sing? “It Feels So Good”, “Sky”, “World Of Change”, “Another World”, “I Don’t Give A Damn”, “Rock With You” (I sung that live to Quincy Jones, Rod Temperton and Chas Jankel in 2014 at the Royal College Of Music), the Flake songs (from the TV advert in the seventies), “Killing Me Softly” (Roberta Flack), Cafe Del Mar’s “Energy 52” and then Aretha’s “I Say A Little Prayer” Q14. If you had to organise and perform a big concert (say like Live Aid), who would be on your line up (past and present)? A14. You always release great songs, will we hear more from Sonique in the future, have you any new songs or gigs in the pipeline, that would be a real treat for people? A16. I’m currently working on a new album for 2020 which will be in a slightly different style from my previous music. Q17. Can you read music or does it come to you in your head and you just tinker and toil with your instruments until it sounds good? A17. It just comes to me in my head as I can’t read music! Q18. Do you see a revival of the nineties ever coming around again, there always seems to be a revival of something happening somewhere? A18. Definitely it’s already happening.

Q19. You described yourself to me as a country girl over the phone, have you always been a country person or is this a new way of life. I have always imagined you were an inner city London lady going by your music videos and the club scene being city driven? A19. Born in Crouch End, North London and grew up around the club scene however I love living in the tranquillity of the countryside with my two dogs, ‘Bolt’ and ‘Blue’! Q20. Your stage name is like a cross between “Sonic” meaning sound waves and “Unique”, Unique Sound, Sound Unique = “Sonique”, it’s a superbly cool name, who came up with that? A20. One of my best friends Angie from Highgate Woods school, who now lives in Spain and we still keep in contact. Q21. When you were young, growing up in Crouch End did you dream of being an athlete? A21. Yes, I did really well running in the pentathlon. Q22. If you were to throw a dream dinner party for ten people at your home who would you invite? A22. WORLD EQUAL is especially honoured and appreciates Vinnie taking time to tell us about her fascinating life in the music industry in the USA. Dorene at Junior High school and our church was having a talent contest. Dorene and I sang together. My dad loved the way we harmonised with a third girl called Ruthie. We won the State of New Jersey finals in a talent competition. My father was approached by an agent who was looking for a backing singer.

Q1.Tell WORLD EQUAL a little bit about yourself just to get the ball rolling, where are you from and what is your profession? A1. I was born in 1948 in Newark, New Jersey. Music was in my blood. My family moved to Bloomfield, New Jersey and I spent most of my life there. My profession as a young woman was as a recording artists. From there I did choreography for local stage shows. I got married, left the business and had children.

I got the gig. Later Dorene, my singing partner joined and we were asked to perform in two live shows for Jimmy Charles as ’The Revelletts’. After the two live concert shows I was later told by Jimmy’s manager that he preferred to recruit three teenage black girls instead. I wasn’t bitter over the change.

During this period I became a private investigator working for my dad for about five years, I loved it. In 1985 my children were old enough to look after themselves so my husband and I then opened up an independent record label that was distributed by RCA.

I understood why Jimmy’s manager wanted to make the change. In my mind it just seemed right to make that change, aesthetically. However, after this Dorene and I were signed to RSVP records. I carried on the name ‘The Revelletts’ which I invented but could not use it I wasn’t happy to learn is that Jimmy’s manager kept the name I created, for the new girls.

The international Northern Soul superstar Benny Troy, sixties pop legend and movie star Frankie Avalon (whose biggest hits were “Venus” in 1963 youtu.be/_mA1kb9UNw and “Beauty School Dropout” in 1978 youtu. be/0TOxhzAm7fY) and a young singer Christina Aguilera were all signed to our record label. My role was manager to Frankie and Benny while my husband focused solely on managing Christina. By 1997 Christina was signed by our label and distributed by RCA. After she received her first Grammy she signed with RCA and had a fall out with the manager my husband had assigned to her. She is still with RCA. I eventually moved into the movie industry. I am the founder and CEO of the “Creative Mind Group Entertainment LLC” Q2. Tell us all about your girl band ’The Revelletts’ in the sixties? A2. When I moved to Bloomfield I met my best friend

We were then renamed ‘The Party Favors’. In late 1964 my dad took Dorene and I into the recording studio to record two songs written by my cousin, Benny (LaManna) Troy. Having performed on a few local and National TV shows we had the pleasure of touring with The Clay Cole Review as well as being on Clay Cole’s TV show on WPIX. We toured with the likes of Johnny Maestro, The Capri’s, The Del Satins, The Ly-Dell’s and so many other great groups of that era. ‘The Party Favors’ were performing throughout Philadelphia,

MD, Delaware, Upstate New York, Connecticut and Palisades Park, NJ, when we received the news we were booked to appear on the national hit TV show ‘American Bandstand’, hosted by Dick Clark in Philadelphia. Excited was an understatement for Doreen and I until the day before the taping of the show. On that fateful day I was notified that my grandfather, whom I was very close to, had passed away. With a heavy heart I asked my dad to cancel the taping. I was unable to go on the show as if nothing had happened. Then Dorene had decided to back out of the duet due to some personal reasons, which now left me as a single act. The record label wanted me to continue on as a solo act but I had made the decision to quit all together. Never regretting my decision or ever looking back I only looked forward to other great possibilities.

Q3. Was this the first music production you worked on? A3. Yes, the work with Jimmy Charles. Then when we signed to RSVP records as ‘The Party Favors’, we were touring and doing live TV shows. There was a teenage show that was almost as popular as ‘American Bandstand’ with Dick Clark. We were booked to play in both shows because our record was climbing the charts. The day before we were meant to play these my grandfather died and I backed out, two days before we were supposed to leave for Italy. It wasn’t in my heart. I’ll be honest with you, it was never in my heart really to perform live in front of an audience. I did enjoy it but I was always fascinated with behind the scenes. Being in the recording studio, working the soundboard, how to make a record, how to equalize. What I could hear with my ear, what I felt should be the next step forward for a song. I consider it a genetic factor as all my family could sing and play many instruments and were all self taught. I received more satisfaction in helping someone than putting myself out front. Q4. Who has inspired you the most over the years? A4. First and foremost my parents, then the rest of my family and of course my cousin Benny Troy was a big inspiration. Also Frankie Avalon, I was his manager, publicist and agent. I was booking him on stage shows and TV shows. He didn’t have to do anything, he always said I was the best agent he ever had as he would just have to turn up and everything was sorted out for him. I am a typical Virgo. Everything has to be in order. I get flustered if something is not organised. Q5. How did you transition from the music business to working as a film producer in the entertainment industry? A5. That was funny how that happened. Benny was performing in this club and I knew the owners of the club, one of whom, Jerry had aspirations to be an actor. He knew I managed Benny Troy, so he approached me and asked “How do you feel about taking on an actor?” I said “Well, I will be honest I came up in the music business”.

He reckoned it was no different. I knew how tough the music business was, but let me tell you, the film TV business is tougher yet, it’s harder than music. I said sure I’ll give it a try so I put his name forward to castings for movies. I sent out his biography with professional images. I received a call from Sean Cross. He loved Jerry’s look and the way he performed in a wise guy type movie he’d seen him in before, he played an attorney in it. Sean and I just hit it off and were on the phone for two or three hours. He said I should get into this business rather than music. I thought about it, I was only concentrating on Benny Troy’s music at that time. So I wound up getting involved with a movie that Sean wrote and was able to get a deal for it. Unfortunately, Paramount Studios and its executive wanted to take it all away from us after we had worked so hard on it. Sean, being the writer and director, they wanted to cut him out of all of it and just give him a very small percentage. We had already Mark Wahlberg as the lead actor ready to go with the movie. It was a political suspense thriller movie and it was eighteen years ago. We are still working at it today and believe it or not it was very accurate then to what the political scene is today. Sean was ahead of his time with this movie. So Jerry got the part as co-star, Mark Wahlberg as the lead and we were starting to cast other actors and it fell apart when Paramount didn’t want to give Sean what he was asking for when it was his script and his screenplay. It never diminished mine, or Sean’s relationship with each other, in fact it strengthened it. Q6. Can you tell WORLD EQUAL about some of your other film and music productions? A6. Taking a much, needed break from the business in 1970 I married and began to raise a family. My focus was on being a wife and stay at home mum, raising our two sons. Then in 1985 I felt it was time to get back into the business. By 1998 my husband and I ventured into starting an independent record label, Mirror Records, under our company called “The Montclair Organization” Under TMO, we also started a movie/TV production 63

company, partnering with award winning actor Paul Sorvino. You may also remember him as the Mob Boss character ‘Pauly’ in the very famous gangster movie “Goodfellas”. He starred alongside, Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta. We soon added another label, Pony Records, which was distributed by RCA Records. With this came the signing of Christina Aguilera, debuting her first successful album. By the year 2000, after receiving her first Grammy award, Christina left TMO, signing exclusively with RCA. TMO also signed Frankie Avalon (whom I also began to represent from 1992 to 1995 and still close friends with till this day), international recording artist Benny Troy and a group called ‘Point Blank’. In 1995, I began overseeing (my cousin) Benny Troy’s successful international career. Sadly now he has passed away but at present, we are working on his film documentary along with working on other films, music and TV projects. In 2005 I had the pleasure of meeting Sean Cross, an up and coming film writer, director and producer. Our first venture was a film Sean wrote, titled “Joe Citizen”, starring Mark Wahlberg. I touched on this earlier in the interview. Q7. Do you think women have had as many opportunities and equal respect in the music and film industries as their male counterparts? A7. Most of my career I have had equal respect and opportunity throughout. Q8. You work in multiple areas such as film, TV, music, specifically what is your preferred or most experienced area? A8. They all have their pluses and minuses. TV, money wise is far better because you get your weekly royalties and there are always re-runs, which keep it coming in. With movies, there is four weeks to get the big money in at the box office, if it does not do well within the first one or two weeks you have a good indication it’s going to go in the red. Movies are a big risk financially. 64

The time, often many years of your life can go into the preparation for one movie. Producers and actors get paid the most but they deserve it especially those who may have put seven or ten or even twenty years into preparing and trying to get a movie off the ground. They are entitled to the big money. Redd Foxx for example took seven years. Q9. Tell us all about ‘Benny Troy’ the international Northern Soul superstar, as his name keeps popping up? A9. Benny Troy is a worldwide legend and icon in the Northern Soul music genre. His big hit was ‘ I Wanna Give You Tomorrow’ on the De-Lite Record label (written and produced by Billy Terrell in 1975) youtu. be/8Jr06Gg29bw He was my cousin and I managed him for many years until he sadly passed away last year. At present, we are working on a film documentary about Benny’s life and career, along with other films, music and TV projects. Q11. WORLD EQUAL would love to know how you and the highly respected Suzanne de Passe start working together. Tell us a little about that? A11. I still work with Suzanne de Passe. We crossed paths in the 60’s in New York City in a huge dance club called the ‘Cheetah’. Suzanne began her career in show business here as a promoter. Through her friendship with Cindy Birdsong, who replaced Florence Ballard as a member of The Supremes in 1967, she began working at Motown as a Creative Assistant to company founder, Berry Gordy. Early in her career, Suzanne developed Michael Jackson and his brothers into ‘The Jackson 5’ with TV and live concerts around the world, turning them into household names! She was instrumental in taking the record label to television with a host of critically acclaimed and highly rated specials, including the multiple award-winning ‘Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever’ were produced while she was President of Motown Productions. When Motown was sold, she partnered with her mentor in Gordy/de Passe Productions and subsequently 66

Q15. What is your favourite quote that inspires you? A15. “If you throw enough Spaghetti against the wall something’s bound to stick” I heard it from my parents years and years ago. I love it. It’s funny too.

When she met me she lifted me off the ground and gave me a big bear hug, swinging me around. We have remained great work friends and business partners ever since. I am so humbled that Suzanne considers me a partner. She has said I am the best partner they ever had because I am patient, I don’t demand or get angry with anyone and just get my job done.

Q16. Tell us about one of your main films Redd Foxx? A16. I am the Executive Producer with Suzanne de Passe who is the CEO of ‘de Passe Jones Entertainment’ for the life story of Redd Foxx, a TV movie in pre-production. You may be familiar with him through a movie that starred Eddie Murphy called ‘Harlem Nights’. He plays Benny the half blind man who wore the big thick glasses. Q12. Is there an artist you want to work with that you have not had the opportunity yet? A12. In film I would love to work with Julia Roberts & Whoopi Goldberg. In fact Whoopi already has one of my movie projects. In music it would have to be Ariana Grande. I am very close to her aunt. I said to her from the very beginning this kid has serious chops like there is no tomorrow (meaning amazing vocal ability). I just hope she doesn’t go in the direction Christina Aguilera went and end up with the wrong handlers who get her into the skimpy outfits. She didn’t need that with the vocal ability she had like Celine Dion or Whitney Houston. Just keep it straight about the singing like the greats. Be classy and sure enough that is the direction Ariana went.

Q17. Tell us about Joey Dee and the Starliters with Benny Troy, Jimi Hendrix and Joe Pesci. That is an incredible list of names grouped together, what is that all about? A17. Many musicians passed through ‘The Starliters’; Jimi was a guitarist making his way in the world and got a start in the band before he became the legend many know him as today. Joe used to cut my cousin Benny Troy’s hair. Before Joe became an actor he was both a singer and a barber on the local circuit.

Q13. What was the last great movie you watched? A13. There are so many!! “The Notebook” starring Ryan Gosling is my top favourite.

My Dad had a local trio band at weekends. Frankie Valli used to always ask my dad to sing in his band here and there. Frankie and Joe grew up in the same housing development back then and that is how my cousin Benny got to know them too.

Q14. Billy Terrell was a legendary music producer in the 60’s you worked with and he helped Benny Troy. Could you tell WORLD EQUAL what that was like? A14. In the early 70’s Billy Terrell had heard a lot about Benny Troy on the New Jersey circuit and other musicians kept saying to him Benny was phenomenal. Billy went to

We all came from the same neighbourhood. I knew ‘The Four Seasons’ because of my dad. I knew Nikki the baritone singer of the band. Back then ‘The Four Seasons’ were called the ‘The Four Lovers’. My Dad gigged in the high end restaurants up and down New Jersey everyone knew him. 67

Q18. Discovering talent seems to be your calling. What gives you a feeling about a person that they have something special? A18. All I need to hear is one bar of singing coming out of their mouth and I’ll know. I can tell right away with actors too. Q19. What advice would you give young people starting out their careers in the music and/or film industry today? A19. That’s tough. I’ll give you an example. My son introduced me to a young lady who sings. This young lady sent me a demo of her singing. She had a beautiful incredible natural voice. Then she sent me a video, and the young lady is gorgeous but let me say it changed my mind. There was too much skin on show. I just want to hear the amazing voice. I’m not into today’s look where kids are practically naked in their music videos. Image wise I love the classic Audrey Hepburn style, a bit of class and style. Young girls today are showing too much skin. I worry about my granddaughters. They are being exposed to too much bare skin, twerking and over sexualisation from the music industry at a very young impressionable age. Q20. What was your most memorable year in your career and why? A20. In ‘The Party Favors’ with my friend Dorene our record was out and climbing the charts and we we’re booked to do our first TV show upstate New York. Travelling ten hours through a blizzard, we first had to perform in a huge Arena and we had second billing to the main act who were then called ‘The Detergents’ later known as ‘The Archies’ who had a hit with “Sugar Sugar”. We both had songs climbing the charts at that time. We sang what was called Bubble Gum music. Anyway we were second billing to them but they didn’t make it through the blizzard so we became top bill at the arena through default. Next morning we had breakfast next before going to the TV show and we had seen lots of fans outside. So many that the police had to be called. 68

They we’re ripping at our clothes it was incredible. That was very memorable. One time I myself and Dorene went for a cigarette and walk to a coffee shop at a recording studio and Cher walks out for a smoke too, then Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. We all went down seven floors in a lift to go to the coffee shop. Dorene and I were only fourteen years old. We were in a lift with The Rolling Stones. I could hear them earlier recording “Time Is On My Side” and Cher recording “I Got You Babe”. It was very memorable. Q21. What has been one of your funniest moments over the years? A21. There are so many but one funny story was when Dorene and I got back from a recording and we got caught smoking in a very unusual way. My parents would not let us smoke. We sneaked up to the bathroom in my parent’s house and opened the window to let the smoke out. Next thing a fire engine is heard and we are wondering, oh dear someone’s house is on fire. Next thing I see it racing down our driveway. Then in comes the firemen to the bathroom and they find us blowing smoke out the window. We got in trouble that day. Q22. Has the development of technology over the years changed the industry for the better or the worse? A22. For the better I think. Q23. Are you working on anything at the minute? What is your current project we are all bursting to know? Currently I am working on the Redd Foxx movie. I am the Executive Producer with de Passe Jones Entertainment for the life story of Redd Foxx; it’s a TV movie in pre-production. I am doing a movie as Executive Producer for the life story of Eric “Uggie” Bowens, a beloved disabled young man killed in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey on November 11, 2016, two hours shy of his 46th Birthday. I am doing that with scriptwriter Frank Orefice. Finally I am also working on a very, very special musical variety show. I would love to tell you more on this but it’s top secret at the moment! Alternative F ashion Week 2019 BELFAST ALTERNATIVE FASHION WEEK February 23rd 2019 at Belfast Castle. WORLD EQUAL’s fashion ethics embrace diversity. After it’s inauguration to high acclaim in Belfast City in 2016, returning from sold out shows in London and Edinburgh on their subsequent United Kingdom tour, Alternative Fashion Week nestled it’s roots for a particularly memorable homecoming show halfway up a mountain within the high walls of the famous Belfast Castle. With a view to a thrill, overlooking the entire city, Belfast Alternative Fashion Week (BAFW) was host to 70

a plethora of original, alternative & commercial creativity. Showcasing fashion, art with live music as a backdrop from original bands both upcoming and famously established in pop, dance, rock and folk genres. Gaining mainstream media coverage before and after the event such as Radio interviews with local legend Frank Mitchell on U105.fm, prime time television coverage with household name Pamela Ballentine on UTV Life, along with massive full page spreads in the Irish News, Daily Mirror and Sunday World, this cemented BAFW firmly on the map as reoccurring viable and in demand fashion extravaganza that is both popular on a local and

The Chichester Ballroom at Belfast Castle is where the magic all went down. It was like the Louvre art museum came to life. The walls we’re adorned by many beautiful Artworks created by renowned local and world famous Irish artist Alan Quigley. Alan’s art overlooked a fashion show that has never been witnessed or mirrored before in Northern Ireland by anyone else. It featured local and London based fashion designers, performers, models & musicians with members from the LGBTQ community who have never been asked to walk in a runway show before in Northern Ireland. Breaking boundaries, supporting diversity and moving forward was the order of the day. Main sponsor Josh Mayhook, owner of jeanjacketdesigns, dressed models from the LGBTQ community in his jaw dropping dresses and steam punk concepts, which many say stole the show. Before the runway began the show opened with up and coming local Belfast band ‘VALE’, who in their teenage youth performed 30 minutes of superb original songs that took the audiences breath away. Famous Irish folk band Na Leannai then took the lead and performed as the main band throughout the event providing an outstanding enchanting Irish musical audio backdrop as the collections rolled out to a warm applause from the audience. James Kennedy from Wales intervened and rocked out with an astounding set list of his own original compositions that also impressed everyone in the room. Amrick Channa from London performed some dance hits that lifted the atmosphere further in his usual fun loving way while local Belfast female Rock Chick ‘SAFFIRE’ performed her bands superb original songs dressed in an amazing outfit from London designers Jeanjacketdesigns to further enrich an already completely captivated audience. 74

Runway collections included Legendary graphic designer turned fashion designer Bruno Tilley from London showcased his debut collection of T Shirts from his new label Aware.zone. Bruno’s career as a graphic designer has seen him design the artwork on album front covers of many high profile famous global musicians such as Bob Marley and many more. Local and popular designer Jenny Lindolp Bridal Wear took everyone’s breath away with her uniquely stunning wedding dresses. Incredible jewellery made from recycled metal had been shipped over from Germany by Doris Hermann of MetalVlorphose – The Aesthetics of Scrap. Jayne Molloy’s wonderfully qwerky collection caught everyone by surprise while London designer Julia Knight made a very elegant gown appearance. A touch of history played its part from excellent local outlet ‘The Vintage Exchange’. The show was truly underway and for artistic humour out of nowhere an unexpected “Dalek’ from ‘Doctor Who’ invaded the catwalk telling everyone it was going to exterminate them as the audience we’re in hysterics laughing and applauding. This added a wonderful dimension of art and humour and special effects to the show. To put the cherry on top, local role model and amputee model Ross Andrew Davidson appeared several times on the catwalk shaking audience members hands as he proudly and bravely strutted on his metal prosthetic leg. If that was not impressive enough a wonderful family from London travelled all the way over with their daughter Georgina Rankin AKA Makeup Junkie G, who at only 30 inches tall and wheelchair bound confidently made her appearance on the runway to an amazed audience. With a degree in Make Up and a contract with a major cosmetic company it was a huge privilege to have Makeup Junkie G model at Belfast Alternative Fashion Week. The journey from London to Belfast and back must have been an immense task for the Rankin Family, we can only forever be humbled and grateful for their efforts and in this issue extend our sincerest gratitude towards them and wish them all the best for the future. When the runway was over everyone made their way to the green room for the after party. Giving everyone

a chance to mingle and network, the green room became a very happy atmosphere all round. Live music continued on to closing time from solo performer Kieran Sherry who is also the co organiser of the event. Kieran also had a few musicians join in such as artist Alan Quigley who is also a very accomplished Jazz guitarist and songwriter. Alan was a special effect artist for the Hammer Horror films and has rubbed shoulders with Led Zepplin, Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher to name a few. The quality of natural talent and diversity at the event was abundant on every turn. Closing the event, EQUAL Awards we’re given out to people such as the very special guest Grammy Award recipient Skyler Jett who has worked with most of the greatest musical artists in the world from Celine Dion to Barbara Striesand, Quincey Jones, Sting the list is endless. Skyler is a singer songwriter and producer of incredible talent. Promoting his musicforglobalchange.com concept around the world, it was a pleasure and privilege to have him in Belfast. Other EQUAL awards went to Author Mirsad Solakovic, Introducer of people Richard Barnett, local Amputee Model and role model Andrew Ross Davidson. The location gave many people a chance to experience a fashion show in a castle that had that air of wonderment, making it an unforgettable experience for everyone involved as the twinkling Belfast City lights flickered outside in peace to guide us all home in the end.

“In my book it isn’t worth doing unless you are giving it your all”. Brought up in a creative family on the West of Scotland Paul was surrounded by art, music and design. The eldest of three and ironically considering his current passion, probably the more logical of the eclectic bunch. Paul was offered an opportunity to go to the very prestigious Glasgow College of Art after showing great promise in his artwork. After an opportunity as an apprentice cabinet maker dissolved just as he left school to accept it, Paul opted for a life in computers and technology. The only real creative outlet in the many years that followed for Paul was to design and develop the occasional website which, he always wanted to capture his own imagery for but didn’t think he had the skill to do it justice. So, he used his technological skills and early software packages to manipulate other photography work to make images that he could be proud of for his clients. It has taken until now in Paul’s more mature years, to really focus on how to capture his own images but no longer for websites, just for prosperity. At least that’s how it started. After a year of landscape and street photography, Paul Francis was unwittingly introduced to the Beauty and Fashion Editorial Photography field as a feasible outlet for his creativity. Paul Francis had now found his niche, or it found him and there was no looking back. Pronouncing ‘Paul Francis McGugan’ is a bit of a mouthful around the office so Paul prefers to be known as Paul Francis or Paul Francis Photography and tells WORLD EQUAL, “My goal is to become recognised and respected as a brand photographer in the beauty and fashion market and to shoot for large advertising campaigns for media distribution. It’s a tall order but I generally do well with goals I set myself, but I am also realistic. So, it’s one step at a time”

Much loved and held in the hearts of the British public, American born singer turned UK television sweetheart Sinitta came back to the fore when she re-launched her musical comeback in 2017 with the re release of her hit ‘So Macho’. Sinitta was part of the success story of Stock Aitken & Waterman’s infamous ‘Hit Factory’ back in the 1980’s and came to be recognized as a household name for her hit records including “So Macho”, “Toy Boy” and “GTO”. Sinitta has been a regular presenter on UK daytime television programmes such as ‘Loose Women’ and ‘This Morning’ whilst also always a regular on The X-Factor as a coach and mentor.

Cartoonist view of the seriously funny side of life and people. From his earliest schooldays, Art was Vinko’s favourite subject; high grades came naturally and he soon began dabbling with caricatures, inspired by comics and Disney cartoons. After graduating in Fine Art, he exhibited his paintings in galleries across Europe with success in Rome, Milan, Turin, Como, Venice, Udine, Trieste, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Geneva etc. having a number of solo exhibitions and winning awards for his work along the way.

Vinko Kalcic While living in N. Ireland, he became captivated by the scenery. Initially focusing on landscapes and later on people and animal portraits, he exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in Belfast, Newtownards, Lisburn, Newry, Newcastle, Bangor and Carlingford. Observing life in the province and enjoying “craic” with the locals inspired him to draw cartoons of popular characters from TV, film, sport, religion and politics.

Encouraged by family, he began to submit his work and had cartoons picked up by some notable publishers including the Belfast Telegraph, Sunday Independent, Northern Woman, Woman’s Way, In Dublin, Sunday Times, Irish News, Banbridge Chronicle, Newry Reporter etc. With this exposure and growing popularity many wellknown faces commissioned Vinko to create their own unique works of art. So, what have been Vinko’s best moments? “Firstly, taking part in ‘Leading Portrait and Caricature Artists’ exhibition in Malone Art Gallery in Belfast alongside one of Ireland’s greatest artist – the legendary Rowel Friers. Soon afterwards, the Belfast Telegraph wrote an article about Rowel and his work as a leading cartoonist over 40 years in N. Ireland and I did his 118

caricature. He liked the caricature so much that invited me to his home in Holywood. Next thing, I was sitting with Rowel in his living room having tea and biscuits and chatting away. We had a very friendly conversation about art and life. What a great man and extraordinary artist he was.

“I was also particularly delighted when the BBC approached me and requested a caricature of their radio and TV star Gerry Anderson for the popular television program Anderson on the Road which was subsequently used in promotional material. One of the highest points in my career as a cartoonist was when working for Sunday Independent (best-selling newspaper in Ireland). Privileged to illustrate Eilis O’Hanlon weekly column ‘O HANLON’S CORNER’. Eilis is one of the most talented columnists. Her columns often appeared in The Guardian (London). “Another amazing highlight was when I showed my caricature to Olympic Champion Michelle Smith (three gold medals and one silver in swimming). Her laughter and her smile were as precious as her signature on my work! It is these reactions that make my career as a cartoonist so rewarding.”

Tracey Coryell is a singer/songwriter based out of Orlando Florida. She was recently signed to the Indie record label, RHOMBUS Records out of Los Angeles, California. Currently Tracey is still working on her upcoming album, “raVel” in the beautiful and charming city of St. Augustine, Florida with Producer/Engineer Lucio Rubino at his studio, The Fish Tank.

Tracey has been writing, recording and performing for the last 30 years and she doesn’t shy away from admitting that her song-writing passion has been a saving grace throughout her life. But the journey of this most recent recording project provides a much needed, new beginning and a sacred, touching legacy to her husband and forever muse.

The album will get released Autumn 2019, but the first single, “Shotgun” will be released digitally on July 2 and available on all the major download sites. Her new album will be dedicated to her late husband and legendary jazz guitarist, Larry Coryell, in which she pays special homage to him in her song, “Waiting Here”.

Stefan Nenov I think of my artworks as messages that have to contain a captivating visual material, a strong concept and an open field for thoughts. 126


I am trying to reflect the feelings and ideas that move our society and translate that to one deeper meaning. Internet and the new technologies are one my main source of ideas and provocations. It is an interesting challenge to observe the way our society communicates and what influence have the Internet technologies on the inner unconscious movements in human soul. In other words how we humans change and what defines our time.

I always try to relate the representative of the new with the archetypal, existential symbols of human identity. At the same time my eyes are wide open for new interesting objects. From a sexy knickers to a sphinx cat everything could grab my attention as long as it is challenging to be turned into a piece of art.

My focus is mainly on sculpture in wood. While working with it the aim is to present unusual for the reality objects, with strange presence which evoking amazement. That includes transformation of the form to surreal level, implementing colors and structures. To capture an unique moment or action is another of the problems contained in my sculptures. I reckon the wood is the most unique sculpture material, the fact it has been something alive and later transformed into a piece of art

reminds of reincarnation. Physically I like the touch of wood, it gives me a full control of the process and this where I feel absolutely free to express myself. The styles and approaching in my works vary from the experience of the classic woodcarving to the modern cleared form. Whatever I do, the figurative and the recognizable is an imperative, I enjoy to see the impact of my works and their dominance over the space they are placed. 129

Ross Andrew Davidson If i could give one piece of advice to anyone who reads this it would be: “Put your worst foot first.” In the last eighteen months I have not only lost a a limb, but I have gained a purpose and an understanding of what I have to do as a human being on my short time on Earth. Although I suffer from chronic pain most days, I turn my pain in to a drive for strength and success, and hopefully I can inspire others to want to fight for their lives too. I have achieved more in my life since my amputation but not because of it. Simply because I am grateful for life. Grateful to use every sense Mother Earth has gifted us so we can to travel, experience, love and share all our sincerest emotions with the people we meet. There is nothing more valuable than listening to each others songs. If i could give one piece of advice to anyone who reads this it would be: “Put your worst foot first.” As in put all of your ‘self’ in to everything you do. If people do not like you for everything you are and all your insecurities, they do not deserve you and you can move on. Proudly, take every single opportunity that comes your way and surround yourself with people who only want you to achieve and be happy. Compassion is the magical key to life’s corridors. With an interest in photography since the age of 10 and his home town being Ballymena in Northern Ireland Eddie has travelled and travelled with purpose. From Central and Western Europe to Africa for fashion the humble photographer talks of his passion and devotion to the art. “I started after Art College in Belfast at a fashion house and stayed there 13 years. I worked as head of design and we won great awards. I was always interested in the shapes and designs that fashion allowed. It was natural to seek those shapes and designs in my photography. I was always interested in Sports, photography and being involved both on and off the water.” Having worked with photographers in the water I know myself that the split second shot that tells the story of training, effort and captures the essence of the athlete in their element is hard to do but once there it sits with exuberance of the power in one shot. I have been fortunate to work with Eddie and even more so to sit over his work and learn about the stories behind his portfolio.

“About 2 million shots Owen in my life time and what am I to do with them all”, he smiles. As I try to give a smart answer he shows me his scrapbook of designs for houses he has been inspired with and the detailed illustrations. I compliment but sit back for a while. I am listening to a lifelong master of the arts. “Passion is everything, never let finances get in the way” He warns me with eyes that tell of experience. “Dedication to the subject is paramount” I look over the photo he took of a 14 year old African boys feet in the middle of Uganda. I begin to get lost in the Atlantic storms and drift away to my own experiences around the world. I conclude that to see great photography is to transcend the shared experience in a moment and be taken away to the place where it seemed to be frozen in time but precise in its interpretation. Solakovic the boy who said nothing So much to be said about this World, but there is so little time. Our journey through life is speeded up by robots, sophisticated media, information technology and modern way of living. We are all sucked in like a vacuum cleaner and trying to do things so quickly like there is no tomorrow.

From vegetables, fruits to wheat and corn. We worked at each other farms helping each other to cultivate the land without taking any money. Those were the times when we lived in peace and harmony with each other without any wars.

Everything is ten times faster than the time when my grandparents were living on the farm and teaching us about loyalties, respect and way of living to be accepted and respected in this World.

Now, I guess it’s all different, things have changed over the years; we are always tensed and we have forgotten how to share this World with our family, neighbours and friends. We are all one family from Adam and Eve and we manage to forget that on daily bases.

All of those barriers have been removed and we are all becoming huge consumers, our material needs are much greater with less human spiritual connection. Social media have tricked us and now that is only safe human connection through robotic machines who are controlling our social interaction.

We tend to separate our selves by; our race, colour and religion, which are the best excuses to make another war. Bosnia is the perfect example and this is what I am talking about in my recent book called: ‘The Boy Who Said nothing.’

I remember growing up in Bosnia in nineties with my grandad where the money never exchange between people on the farm, but they have only exchanged the goods that they grew on the farm.

I have suffered as a child through the war and the consequences of the war which had a huge impact on my growing up. As a child I stopped talking, but I have absorbed the way our citizens of this World were living.

My observation of the World growing up in UK were like depicted images from the cartoon. I have visualised my own ideas how to make this World perfect. I mean my little World where I was growing up in UK as a child. I have struggled along the way, not only that I had difficult childhood, but I was hurt and became cynical.

Somehow I have managed to get out of that World escaping from that through my writing. As a child I have developed an interest in writing from writing my own words in English to develop my own vocabulary, which slowly turned into sentences. With my emotional attachment to this World through the harrowing experiences in the war in Bosnia. I have survived the war and I have managed to turn those words to sound very poetic. Soon I started developing a huge interest for writing poetry. This is when my first book was born in 2017. I wanted to influence people positively, the human beings who have exasperated energy. That energy can be turned into a positive energy that can influence people positively and benefit other people. I wanted to pay the special attention to the children and how my writing can influence them to aspire them to do better in life. This is why my autobiography book; ‘The Boy Who Said Nothing’ also contained poetry. The publishers have discovered my real strength in writing poetry. I wanted to create and generate positive energy through my writing. I believe that is the only way through the optimism to communicate to this World bearing in mind that most of my life experiences were negative. I have people reading my book that never read before to people who have read the book in prison. After reading my book, the book has influenced them that much, that they have changed their lives completely.

This event catapulted Josh’s work to be featured in most of the mainstream media newspapers The Irish News, Sunday World and The Daily Mirror. Subsequently to this jeanjacketdesigns.com even had their designs worn by Grammy Award recipient and former Commodor’s frontman ‘Skyler Jett’, as he appeared on Northern Ireland’s prime time television show UTV Life with Pamela Ballentine.

HISTORY This is even more incredible when we learn of the adversity Josh Mayhook has had to endure in his life as he struggles with Dyspraxia, a form of Developmental Coordination Disorder, a lifelong condition. The school system in Lambeth London, deemed Josh too disabled for mainstream education but not disabled enough for Special Schools and if Josh was born two days later he would have been a year lower in school. After Josh’s parents fought unsuccessfully for five years to have his needs met, at only twelve years old, he started Secondary School, unable to read or write, leaving Josh stuck in an education system he was unable to cope with. Sitting in French, German and History lessons with teachers complaining, he should just “Sit closer to the board then he might get it”. As a direct result in his school neglecting his disabilities and their general lack of support, Josh was abused and robbed daily in school, resulting in a knife attack and robbery in the P.E. changing room, at his school Chestnut Grove, South East London. The injury was severe, leaving Josh permanently physically disabled and emotionally scarred and terrified of school. The School tried covering it up. Josh was left unable to walk for over a year, at the same time fighting for his Special Educational Needs Assessment. After a SENDIST Tribunal, against London Borough of LambethComplaint NO.05B11513, findings; ‘Maladministration causing injustice, remedy agreement’, led to changes in policies, a formal apology, a full complete SEN assessment and compensation, Local Government Ombudsman (17 July 2006), all this came two years after 150

the attack. It was a small victory for a disabled student and it did not stop there. Josh limps and sometimes cannot walk due to pain, from the injury to his leg. Recovering from extreme depression, missing two years of school, Joshua’s parents sold their home, gave up their jobs and moved out of London to give him a fresh start by the East Coast, in the highly supportive inclusive Clacton County High School. Josh left school with 10 GCSE four A’s, going to Colchester Art College. There he met his mentor, teacher, successful Potter Neville Tatham. Life at college was very challenging. After completing numerous SENS assessments yearly, that were hourslong, Josh was nearly excluded after a teacher disciplined him for “not applying for the correct Special Needs form”, making Josh attend a meeting he did not understand, forcing Josh to sign a form he could not read. The Teacher had to apologies, but refused to retract and threatened Josh’s parents never to enter college campus again- but this was later overruled at a higher level. On a more positive note Josh’s rich creative artistic ideas continued to wow his tutors and end his of year exhibition had incredible huge sculptures, he became the talk of the shows. Josh wanted to document just how difficult it is for some disabled students to be educated and funded. It’s hard to believe the level of discrimination that exists in some places today, especially towards a disabled person, but it still does exist. For his dissertation Josh wrote a very comprehensive document called ‘Legislation and Funding for Disabled Students’. It discusses and analyses whether legislation and funding fully supports disabled students. With this document and his creative artistic work, Josh successfully achieved a B.A. Honours Degree. The document was printed into a small book and a copy is on record in The British Library and Colchester College Library. Neville Tatham, Josh’s Tutor at college, proudly attended Josh’s first catwalk show in London earlier last year at London Alternative Fashion Week, where he received his ‘EQUAL Top Designer’ Award.

Jeanjacket designs have faced challenges that many would buckle and crumble under. It was no easy journey but the inspirational one they have endured, is proof that sometimes you have to fight harder than anyone else should ever have to and take the help that you deserve, as many will try to deprive you of it.

Princess HRS (“Her Royal Songstress”) is one of the greatest British female vocalists of the eighties and everyone loved her smooth and soulful songs, especially the hit tunes “Say I’m Your Number One”, “I’ll Keep On Loving You” and “After The Love Has Gone”; she has sold millions of records which have stood the test of time, still sounding so incredible whenever you hear them! In the early ‘80s she worked as a backing vocalist with the group “Osibisa”. From 1991 to 2003 she lived in the US, before returning to England. That same year she formed her own music label “OnDa Ground” with her brother Donovan, which has released all her music since, and in April 2014, she released her third album, “The Emergence”, the first in twenty-seven years. It is the first in a trilogy of albums, the other ones titled The Passion and The One. An incredible track called ‘So Far From My Baby’ is one to listen out for. 161

Q1. Your new single ‘So Far, From My Baby’ from your new album ‘The Passion’ is a magnificent track. Where did the inspiration for this track come from and is it based on personal experience or something you noticed in others, or a bit of both? A1. ‘Magnificent’, that works for me lol. Thank you so much! – Short answer, a bit of both. I find that the art of music and the business of music can be all consuming. Personal relationships and all that they entail can end up being a ‘dream deferred’ and sometimes to the detriment of the relationship. So, I applied my personal experience as a woman and an artist to the song and also thought about that same dynamic being experienced by power couples like Beyonce and Jay Z or Alicia Keys and Swiss Beatz for example. Q2. You are an incredible singer. For those who may not know, you had a multi-million selling song all around the world in the eighties with ‘Say I’m Your Number One’. How did you get into the music business on a commercial level? A2. (Smile) Thank you again! I think I like you! Don and his partner put on a fashion show and included me as a presenter. I was seen by a young producer called Quarim (if I remember correctly), who having decided that he liked the look of me, (smile). He found out that I was a singer and invited me to a session that he was producing. I did the session and apparently did well enough to be noticed by SAW who Quarim had been working with. However, it took them a year to find me and call me in for a session with another singer. During the session they liked my sound and asked me to do all of the backing vocals and excused the other singer. Don then waited two and a half hours to meet with Pete Waterman and discuss working further with the production team and maximizing what seemed (even then) to be a winning formula. The alliance had begun and so had ‘the business – the ‘commercial level’. Q3. The music to your new single ‘So Far, From My Baby’ is a very new direction and vibe from the eighties. It’s like a reggae vibe and dance fusion. Your look in the video for it has a very traditional African look. Can you expand on the new sound and 162

look for us and explain why you have taken this direction? It is very beautiful both visually and audibly may I add! A3. I’ve decided, I do like you! Much thanks – really cool that you’re ‘feeling’ what we’re doing. We call the sound ‘D.A.R.E Groove’ It is a stimulating mix of Dancehall, Afro-Pop, Reggae, and E.D.M. (if you will) Lol. It’s reflective of the ‘blurring’ of the lines as far as genres are concerned, that we’re all hearing and/or experiencing now, I think. To describe the look on the cover of ‘So Far, From My Baby’, I think I’ll plagiarize, my friend, Dr. Wayne Chandler’s book title ‘Ancient Future’. I’m wearing an African print coat/dress with bodysuit/catsuit underneath and suede over-the-knee boots! How’s that for an East/West connection?! (Smile). Q4. Do you manage yourself nowadays or have you a team to help you do that? A4. Quiet as it’s kept, I’ve always had good input as far as my management is concerned. Donovan Heslop who is also my brother, for those who don’t know, is still my manager, as well as my producer, business partner, cowriter, CEO of our company ‘The International Reggae Train’ (LLC),TV show creator and producer. There’s more but I don’t choose to sound like I’m bragging. He is my brother after all lol, so I’ll claim accomplishment by association, if nothing else. Q5. Does social media help you in any substantial way in promoting yourself, if so, how do you feel this is compared to when there was no internet? A5. Great question…now how to answer it without taking an hour or more … I entered this entertainment arena when EVERYTHING was more upfront and personal. I myself do not use social media extensively, it is employed, however, by the record company as part of our marketing strategy. I’ve never liked taking photos so taking selfies is anathema to me. I still prefer the ‘personal touch’, whilst living in a digital age. Certain aspects of marketing don’t change e.g. social media could be called ‘digital word-of-mouth’. I use facebook, primarily because some of my most


ardent fans relate to me there. Also, I’ve never felt good at self-promotion, I was able to allow my work to do the talking with Don being the one with an uncanny sense of what ‘works’ promotionally. So, cut to now when I’m starting to accept that social media HAS to be seen as ‘media’ and not just ‘social’. The internet has put me in touch with a fraction of the fans I have apparently. Which leads me to conclude that there are obviously more substantial gains to be had from being able to navigate these platforms efficiently. In other words, the best is yet to come and IS now. Q6. I heard an interview on the radio several years ago with Sir Paul McCartney. He was asked what he thought about the internet allowing artists to get their music out. His answer was along the lines of that he thought it was wonderful because you could write music at home and get it out to the masses and be able to stay at home with family without excessive exhausting tours taking you away from them. I am almost certain he said he would have preferred it that way. It is very relevant to your subject matter of your new single. Do you think it is better this way in today’s new landscape of music delivery via the internet? A6. I think it’s different but not necessarily better. The greater convenience we’ve gained by being able to record at home in our pyjamas, so to speak, is the best possible scenario for the new and more seasoned artists alike – rather basic example. However, being able to tour and ‘touch’ your audience/fans with that ‘live’ performance will never be superseded for me personally. As with all things, balance is essential. Anything done to excess tends to create an imbalance. Touring for endless months at a time can cause a certain amount of disconnection, I think. Q7. Your new album ‘The Passion’ where can we buy a copy? A7. iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, all streaming platforms in fact. Q8. Who are your favourite singers, and what inspired you the most to pursue the tough and competitive journey into the music industry? A8. Again, how long have we got regarding favourite singers? Let me take a breath. Can’t believe I nearly left out Rachel Ferrell !!!!! like I said – how long have we got? Inspiration has come from every artist that I love. I saw Stevie Wonder at Wembley and I remember him calling that massive arena his ‘living room’. He was magnificent to use that word again. It was as if he had hypnotized the audience – so much so, that the crowd leaving the arena was sooo mellowed out. No shoving or pushing, everyone smiling and agreeing with strangers that they’d had the best time. The car park was the kicker -everyone was giving each other the right of way, gesturing to each other that they could cut in front of each other and not an angry blare of a horn could be heard. It was almost eerie. That’s when I said, I’d like to be able to do something like this, influence good feelings in people. The other moment was when I was undecided whether I wanted to really commit to singing and Don said, “Think of it like this – can you imagine your life without singing”? Talk about a light-bulb moment! Q9. If you had full control over the entire UK music industry what would you do for up and coming artists? A9. Wow! Another great and loaded question. Because we’re in a digital age I’d expose them to live instrumentation recording and teaching them to EQ sounds from scratch, for starters. Sonic Resonance is Everything. 163

Q10. I have always felt that the older we get the more talented and wiser we become at our craft, but the pop music industry tends to shun performers in this area and I say that with no disrespect to the younger musicians. I believe this is more relevant in pop culture than say Rock or Country or Folk music. This I feel is a shame. Do you feel the same and do you think times are changing in this area of pop or have we still got a long way to go? A10. (Laughing) One can only hope right? In an ideal world we do become more aligned with our talent as we mature and become wiser. The pre-occupation with age is so ‘old’ lol. If I really subscribed to the mindset that celebrates prepubescence in the music industry, you would have found me playing with traffic by now. Yes, I do think it’s changing for the better. More collaborations between the different age groups, prove that music is the ultimate connective tissue. Q11. Where did you produce and record your amazing new album ‘The Passion’? A11. At Don’s studio, RF in N.J. and mixed at TME in the Bronx, N.Y. Also, a big shout-out to Don’s Associate Producer and Keyboardist, EMI Augustin. Q12. Your vocals just keep getting better and better. So much soul, feeling, much more diversity in the melody lines. What have you been listening to and where did this magnetic melodic move arise from, I sense much more power and expression is to come? A12. You do? Thank goodness, ‘more power and expression’, I love that. I also love the bit about the vocals getting ‘better and better’, awesome. I listen to everything from Miles Davis, to Joni Mitchell to Andreas Vollenweider, ‘Weather Report’ to ‘Celtic Woman’. Don also has a great sense of melody. Although I tend not to listen to other artists as much when I’m recording my own music. Trying to avoid the ‘sponge’ syndrome’. You know you could find yourself re-producing that wicked riff you heard earlier in the day. 164

Q13. You have always had very cool hairstyles and wear hip fashionable clothing, especially in the new video of your single ‘So Far, From My Baby. Do you prepare your own look or is there a hair and clothing stylist that helps you? A13. I have had clothing stylists before but the hair has always been a collaborative effort between myself, Don (believe it or not) and when I used to put more colours in a sweetheart of a hair stylist called Levi, used to come and spend three days at a time with me to do it. Nowadays it tends to be more of a family affair. Q14. Many up and coming artists today are trying to learn how to manage themselves because of the easy access the internet has given them to audiences, have you any thoughts on this area? A14. The landscape has changed enough with access to so much more information, that self-management does seem more plausible. I also think that an unflinching support system is invaluable. Someone who helps to galvanize you when you’re not feeling motivated or confident and also tells you the hard truths that we inevitably need to hear at times. I suppose co-management is an answer to that question. Q15. You live by the Hudson River in New Jersey, but are from North London originally. Do you miss the scene in London as opposed to the scene in New York? A15. Interesting… I’ve been living in the US for longer than I care to mention so I think my knowledge of the ’scene’ in London is less informed. What I’ll always love about London is its big city/small town vibe. Not many cities in the world manage to pull off that combo. New York has an energy that feels combustible at any given moment. The feeling that you could see and experience anything and you frequently do. Also, both cities have a high tolerance for ‘strange’ if you get what I mean. Q16. Will you perform live in the UK again? Do you perform live in New York and New Jersey? A16. I will perform in the United Kingdom again. I have to – it’s where I was born. Yes, I have performed in both States.

Q17. Will you be bringing out any more albums as there seems to be a very creative bloom of quality songs happening in your musical career today? A17. Yes. The EP ‘The Passion part 1’ is part of the second album in a trilogy. The third album is called ‘The One’ and thank you once again. Q18. Who do you most admire in the music industry today? A18. Chaka Khan and D’Angelo Q19. I believe you have a band, tell us more about them and what musical instrumentation is involved? A19. (Smile) Yes I have a band ‘The Krown Jewels’. They’re a stand-alone band in their own right as well as the House Band for our TV show ‘The International Reggae Train’. Consisting of drums, bass, keyboards, guitar, vocals. Q20. Do you prefer playing with a live band as opposed to being a solo artist in the past? A20. Most definitely. NOTHING (for me), tops performing with a band. Q21. If you could go back in time would there be anything you would like to change or try differently? A21. (Sigh) I wish I had gotten on stage with Prince when I was invited to. Rest in paradise my love. Q22. What is your most favourite song of your own and of another artist? A22. Well I have to give ‘Say I’m Your Number 1’ it’s props. ‘Say I’m Your Number 1’ brought me to the people I now call fans/friends and me to them. I have a song called ‘Stay, With Me’ which is on ‘The Passion part 2’… it’s ONE of my favourites. Chaka Khan’s ‘So Not, To Worry’, Aretha Franklin’s ‘Oh Me Oh My’. Prince’s ‘I would Die For U’ and Weather Report’s ‘Anywhere, The Moon Goes’ and because I can’t resist it, Joni Mitchell’s ‘Ladies Man’ …. I could go on lol. Cool questions! Alan Quigley Commissions include Chris Rea, Ian Botham, Jimmy White and Steve Davis to name but a few Born Belfast 1950. On leaving school trained as a picture framer and restorer. Moved to London and spent a short time at Hammer Studios training as a make-up artist. Returned to Northern Ireland and being an accomplished musician played in many top show bands in the late 60s and early 70s. Continued to paint and develop his style during these years but had no formal training. A chance meeting in Belfast with the late and renowned Irish artist Dan O’Neill began a career in art. Over the years Alan has developed the style Dan O’Neill taught him. His paintings captivate Ireland’s romantic past with its characters and landscape beautifully portrayed in vibrant colours. He is very much relaxed in this style and has had more than a measure of success in it. Over the years Alan has exhibited throughout Northern Ireland and Dublin and his works have been sold and are in private collections worldwide. Other commissions include 178

musician, Chris Rea, Cricketer, Ian Botham, and other snooker legends including Jimmy White and Steve Davis. One of his most recent commissions of sporting personalities was former champion jockey Sir Antony ‘AP’ McCoy. More recently Alan has been commissioned by Jill and Rick Stein to produce a work for their restaurants in Padstow, Cornwall, Winchester and Sandbanks in Poole, Dorset. Closer to home his monumental life size painting of the late Alex Higgins is currently hanging in Belfast’s Merchant Hotel where it continues to attract much attention from a worldwide audience which is continually passing through this acclaimed establishment. Other works hang in the hotel and in other establishments run by the Beannchor Group. He is currently working on a further large commission for a new hotel being completed by the group which he hopes will be completed within the next few months.

Christopher George Advocate for Anti Bullying I grew up as a child with a mum, dad and brothers. I didn’t go to school much but when I would, I’d often get into lots of trouble and usually end up excluded from school for a few days. Several years had past and by this time I had no dad, didn’t go to school and had been in trouble with the police several times. By the age of seven I was put in to foster care. Two years after being put in to foster care I got a special guardianship order on me. My life gradually changed and I became calmer and less destructive. I started playing the drums 186

and had built a strong sense of clarity that I was finally safe and was at home. I then moved to a fantastic school that has continued to build on my education and my behaviour. As well as having an amazing street community, loving farther and supportive school, I joined my church. By now I am fourteen and have a wonderful life. I cracked down on my faith as a Christian, joining my youth group and frequently talking to the youth leader about questions I had. On the 4th of March 2018 I made probably the biggest decision of my life; I was going to get baptised.


At one point before I was put into foster care I was known as a bully, often I would make fun of other children and in general I would be nasty and pick on anyone I thought would be fun to upset. After a few years of bullying, something had changed in me. I think when I was bullying other people it was a call out for help. I needed a friend. When I went into foster care I myself had started to get bullied. I had realised how much it hurts to be bullied. Time had passed and I had started secondary school. I wasn’t the worst behaved in the school but I was no angel either! My dad had spent more time in my school talking to my teachers than I did learning! I was unhappy and bullied in this school, but at the same time I bullied others. I ended up moving schools as I got stuck in a spiral and couldn’t get out. I moved into my new school and had given myself the fresh start. It was now time to do my GCSE’s and I chose Engineering and Music. I really enjoy making things and talking them apart so Engineering was perfect for me. As I mentioned earlier I started playing the drums. I had progressed with the drums and felt it was time to start another instrument; the electric guitar. I am currently taking lessons for both instruments. The school is connected to the Institute of Music so I am getting the best musical education out there. A drastic change in our family had occurred. This has made it a very difficult year for us. My dad helped me focus on something else, modelling for a charity; Cancel Cancer Africa. Which I had really enjoyed doing. It made me realise that the perception of others is that if you’ve been in care or are in the care system is that you never will achieve your dreams. I had wanted to change people’s perception of children in foster care. I decided I wanted to prove people wrong but above all I needed to prove myself wrong. After a few years previously doing some modelling I decided to take a look at doing it professionally. I ended up doing London Fashion Week for the House Of Ikons and totally loved it. When I got to the end of the catwalk I really felt invincible knowing my past and now looking at my future. In February I walked for Rose Wilson Couture, A World without Borders Collection, which raised awareness of Mental Health and Disabilities This was a chance for me

to show off my style as I got to appear in a music video, the video is for multimillionaire rapper in Bollywood, I will be walking for Rose Wilson again on the 10thAugust 2019 at African Fashion Week London. I had the pleasure of being interviewed by my beautiful and talented friend Carrie Grant, who is on BBC1, The One Show, we chatted about being in foster care, adoption, being bullied, bullies, modelling and my role as Youth Ambassador and of course you can’t forget the music, the interview is available via my social media, the video is now being used by anti-bullying charities. I was also elected the Panache Youth Ambassador by Panache Global Entertainment in November 2017. My role as the Ambassador is to inspire and teach the youth of today to get involved with good causes like charities and encouraging them to get the most out of their communities by helping in any way possible; helping the village shop, giving a hand to those who need it most. I also thrive to inspire the youth to achieve their dreams no matter how hard the circumstances. I feel that as I have achieved my dreams it is my job to encourage others along to achieve their dreams. This last year as Youth Ambassador has been amazing, I was invited to the Nigerian Consulate in London, where I met the High Commissioner and the King of Awka Ibom State, I also had the honour of meeting Richard Taylor the Farther of Damilola Taylor, who was killed in November 2000.

The King then invited me to his private70th birthday party, which was amazing, we are now good friends. Panache Global Entertainment will be holding an awards evening in November, it would be great to see lots of you there. On the 23rdth February 2019 I had the honour of modelling at Belfast Alternative Fashion Week, which I walked for designers, Bruno Tilley and Jean Jackets Design, I will be modelling again October at Belfast Castle at their next show. I Modelled at another Charity event for my friend Kay-Jay, who is also a model, she wanted to raise funds for a little boy, who needed an operation, this was amazing day and we raised lots of money towards Archie’s operation, but we still have a long way to go, if you would like to know more, contact me via social media @christophergeorgeoffical At this event I modelled for sports wear designer and model, Donald Carmichael of fashion label, BirdbangerNYC, which I’m now one of his Brand Ambassadors, I’m now also sponsored by Kitu Kali, a shoes designer and Kwame Koranteng Bespoke Tailoring, who supply me with suits for events I attend, like the Nigerian Consulate, I’m honoured to have so many people around me that have and continue to support me. When I look back, I have to pinch myself, as I never thought this would happen to me, how many people my age have fashion labels sponsoring them, attending the Nigerian Consulate and meeting people that run countries. Thank you to my friend, but he’s more like family, Amrick Channa who introduced me to Shelley Rodgers and Kieran Sherry, without you and my Dad, I don’t think a lot of this would have been possible. Traditionally, the fashion industry has not been associated with sustainability or environmentally friendly practices. However, this trend has begun to shift as both clothing manufacturers and customers make the shift from what has come to be known as “fast fashion” towards a new model of sustainable fashion. Under the fast fashion model, clothes are designed to be popular for one season and then quickly replaced by the next trend. This has created a fashion industry plagued with environmental waste and destruction. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in 2012 eightyfour percent of Americans’ clothes ended up in landfills or incinerators. In addition, textile factories responsible for pumping out the latest fashionable clothes typically have a high energy use related to synthetic fibres and promote the abundant use of pesticides from growing cotton. Some estimates claim that it can take more than 5,000 gallons of water to manufacture a single organic cotton T-shirt. However, the waste and environmental destruction has not gone unnoticed. Environmental organization Greenpeace recently launched their “Detox My Fashion” campaign calling attention to these issues. “It is hard to resist the allure of a good bargain, but fast fashion means we’re consuming and trashing fashion at a higher rate than our planet can handle,” said Kirsten Brodde, head of the Greenpeace initiative. Greenpeace is not alone in pushing for a more sustainable fashion industry. Actress Emma Watson and retailer H&M are some of the most recent influencers to join the Sustainable Fashion bandwagon. In September 2017, The Huffington Post declared, “Sustainable Fashion is the Next Fashionable Thing”. Obviously the demand for more conscious, earthfriendly fashion brands is being heard. The Post focused on an extremely important aspect of this shift: “the greater the pressure is from customers, the faster businesses will be encouraged to make the changes that need to be made within their businesses.” Quite simply, if the consumers demand products that are not invasive and destructive to the planet; if customers demand pesticidefree, cruelty-free products; and if the fashion industry as a whole listens to these calls for a more conscious business model, the shift towards “Sustainable Fashion” will continue. 191

So what steps can we fashion consumers take to make sure the industry hears our demands for environmentally friendly clothing? The answer is complex, but what it comes down to is wearing our clothes for longer periods of time before we decide to drop them off at the resale or consignment shop and not purchasing from brands who are not making efforts to become sustainable. Also, we have to acknowledge the reality that the world is overloaded with unwanted clothes. Americans and Europeans are throwing their clothes away at alarming rates and there is simply not enough people who want to take the old garments – not even in the poorest countries of Africa. There is also currently a lack of technological advances capable of adequately and safely recycle old clothing into new fibres. As technology advances some of these issues will likely be addressed, but for the moment there is no quick fix. However, the best way to create change in this world is always going to be through leading by example. As the saying goes, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. What can we do about the waste issue? For starters, we can lead by example and be less wasteful in our individual lives. I recently launched the “Low Waste Lifestyle Challenge” to call attention to the fact that the average person produces 4.4 pounds of trash every day. Over a lifetime we are producing mountains of trash. I encourage each of you to save all the trash you produce for one week and weigh it at the end. This encourages each person to be more mindful with what they buy and use. At the end of the week collect all the waste, recycle when you can, and compost all organic matter. Film a video showing how little waste you produce after a week and share it with the hashtag #LowWasteChallenge! Now imagine applying this same concept to the fashion industry. What does a low waste fashion challenge look like? How can we apply this mind set to our adoration of fashion and modelling? These are important questions that must be considered if we truly desire an industry that works in harmony with the planet rather than exploiting it. Lilia Milpetrova from MODERNISM to MODERNITY

Lilia Milpetrova – the creator of The Nose – is an artist with a simple vision: to have her creations and her story inspire others to find inner harmony.

The name stems from Lilia’s awkwardness in her bumpy nose during her teenage years. She is more than familiar with self-esteem issues: she suffered from Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Growing up in an era where a “bumped” nose is often considered an imperfection, or even more drastically a defect, she has taken her pain from this negativity and channeled it into a fashion accessories line aimed at women who like and want “themselves”, women who don’t accept the stereotypes. The development of this designer line has not only allowed Lilia to enhance her own self-image, but provided a way for all women to express their beauty through creativity and celebration of both our faults and our beauties, and the blurred line between the two. Lilia’s ability to turn “imperfection” into fashion is a trademark that appeals to all women, especially those who suffer from BBD and other self-image issues.

When we feel good in one area of your self-identity, it often trickles down to other areas of our life. A trendy outfit enhanced with self – confidence can help dreams come true. Boost your attractiveness with a healthy lifestyle, positivity and an aura of “I’m happy because I have reached the point where I’m happy with my body” That is the concept of The Nose.

As Lilia says, humans have always had an element of beauty worship integral to our society. The significant difference in recent years is the coupling of beauty products with big business. Ethics, realities and naturally formed ideas are pushed aside to encourage the impossible objective: to look just like the stereotypical images the media feeds us. Did the beauty industry create self-doubt, or vice-versa? Lilia Milpetrova points out that what is considered “beautiful” or “pretty” isn’t the norm- it’s a rarity! Considering the fact that BDD typically starts when people are most insecure, usually in their teens, it’s not difficult to see why they are such easy targets. No society is free of unreal expectations of what is `pretty`: skin tanning, nose jobs, breast jobs and extreme plastic surgery has almost become the norm. The Nose is both geared towards bringing out the best of what we have – our natural, beautiful self, and allowing it to shine. As Lilia says “I grew up and realised: it just makes me happy, because I’ve reached the point of being in harmony with my body. My nose – I learned not only to accept it but to love it. I realised it’s my most expressive attribute. It makes me the individual that I am and that I want to be`.

Diane Goldie is an artist (painter and wearable art), obsessive maker, feminist, former puppeteer and poet. Born in Nottinghamshire and emigrating to South Africa in 1975 as a child, Diane received partial art training, developed a love of vibrant colour and tribal aesthetic. She had to struggle against her mother’s best efforts to thwart her attempts at a career in art by being the only child banned from compulsory art at school and having had her funds cut from her second year of art college, this forced Diane to abandon her career hopes as a fine artist. Diane spent her early years as a scenic artist, copying Old Masters as part of her daily job before returning o the United Kingdom where she then spent the next 25 years delighting London’s children as a puppeteer. Then when Diane met the inspirationally fabulous fashionista and advanced style queen, Sue Kreitzman her world changed. She gained a dear friend, a surrogate mother and a champion of her art. 199

Sue helped champion Diane’s artistic talents and helped rekindle her passion for art. Diane became Sue’s principle maker of her extraordinary kimonos, helping Sue wear her own very own art on her back. This became Diane’s principle way of life, as making wearable art and living as a full-time artist became a reality. Through Diane’s connections on social media she was asked to appear on a very well-known blogging platform called StyleLikeU where people are asked to tell their story of their style while sitting on a stool, removing layers of clothing as they go deeper into their story. This video went viral, having had over 600K views to date. youtube.com/watch?v=f2wsobx9cJ8 Diane often now gets recognized in the street, whether that be in London or New York and hugs are the usual request. Diane hosts regular outsider art events/ exhibitions where the underground of London’s colourful cool people assemble to celebrate individual style and originality in a world of copycats and clones. She has recently returned to her first love: painting people as she has just finished a collection of portraits of her colourful friends draped her wearable art. She allows individuals to reflect their own passions and personalities on their unique hand-crafted garments through imagery, text and symbols. The consultation process ensures that the final garment is ultimately a collaborative piece. Diane is not a designer, but an empathic artist who channels others passions and translates their vision into reality.

Each piece is imbued with a deeply political charge due to the nature of the process, women are encouraged to wear their own image, to celebrate their inner power and rebel against the Patriarchal dictates to be invisible or only visible through male gaze. 202

It’s hard to survive in the smog of a city When nature provides a place safe and pretty No make up no mask, back or front covers Lot’s of fresh air, good friends & great lovers

Why are all these clues, everywhere in space? Is there some great news, trying to relate? When I walk in your shoes, time flies and stands still On our galactic cruise, we go where we will

The cities are plastic, concrete and metal The country’s fantastic, neat like a petal Stabbing skyscrapers and needles of nettle By solemn green valley and river they settle

Stargazing is good, but street-lights interfere Infinity sounds cool, so far yet so near Space is like a school the pupils are the stars The cosmos makes new rules, correcting ancient scars

Inside and out it can be very rare The odds are extreme that the two can be there In the same place, fragile and fine That, share a connection at the same time

The universe is wide and deeply does it’s soothing Watching from earth’s tide, it’s travelling without moving Appearing very still, beautiful and peaceful The masterpiece is wild, the wonderments deceitful

Both of these landscapes have peril and pleasure All types of toil, all kinds of leisure When we strip away, we’re left with a duty To always protect our natural beauty

Is it one step too far, this time that we all borrow? Will yesterday someday, come after a tomorrow? Where will the masterminds, take us when we’re grooving Let the love unfurl, go travelling without moving.
