A TIME FOR LOVE LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Delving into the history of LGBTQ+ my findings are thus: LGBT was the original initialism that stood for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender. In use since the 1990s, the term is an adaptation of the initialism LGB, which was used to replace the term gay in reference to the LGBT community beginning in the mid-to-late 1980s. Activists believed that the term gay community did not accurately represent all those to whom it referred to.

LGBT is synonymous with a six-band rainbow flag representing LGBT which we all recognise representing LOVE and UNITY of the gay community. The initialism has also become adopted by the mainstream as an umbrella term for use when labelling topics pertaining to sexuality and gender identity.

they are or whom they love, we are all more free.”-President Barack Obama Originally the initialism LGBT was used to emphasise a diversity of sexuality and gender identity-based cultures.

It was used to refer to anyone who is non-heterosexual or non-cisgender, instead of exclusively to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. To recognise this inclusion, a popular variant added the letter Q for those who identify as queer or are questioning their sexual identity. LGBTQ has been recorded since 1996.

Those who add intersex people to LGBTQ groups or organisations use an extended initialism LGBTQI and subsequently LGBTQ+. So, we at WORLD EQUAL decided to add LGBTQ+EQUAL to represent the supporters and allies of the LGBTQ+ community who advocate and promote maximum inclusivity and gender awareness!

Amrick is a powerhouse dynamic international live vocalist and recording artist based in the UK who sings club dance hits and is a recording artist in his own right.

From raising the roof at Fashion shows, corporate events, European clubs and festivals to charity fundraisers and Pride festivals! Amrick’s set include a tribute to 90s club dance classics and House music that everyone knows.

He always rocks the crowd with his incredible voice and style! He has performed worldwide including Maspalomas Gran Canaria, Russia to Dubai to Slovenia to Denmark to Ibiza to Miami USA!!! He has performed many times in UK and Europe for legendary brands: Hed Kandi, Queer Kandi, Stereo Sushi, Pacha London, Ministry of Sound, Pacha Ibiza, Copenhagen festival, Miami WMC, French Alps La Folie Douce, London Fashion events, various Prides including Sparkle Transgender events, London’s famous Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park, Birmingham Symphony Hall and recently performed two shows at Milkshake Festival Amsterdam.

Amrick is also one of 30 vocalists who lent their voices to the charity single LOVE IS THE ONLY LAW. He is also a UK TV personality having been on BBC1, ITV2, Ch4, C5 and SKY! Including: Come Dine With Me, Ant n Dec’s Saturday Take Away - seen by 8 million viewers, The Voice UK. He has already filmed 2 reality shows in a 2017 broadcast! Amrick has been seen on British TV for the past few years, however 2017 was the year when Amrick became the latest star of X-Factor UK! Seen by over 10 million viewers, Amrick appeared on the show to its highest ratings of that current season. He made it through to Boot camp and the six-chair challenge.

UK Pride was held in Newry City this year and was an amazing experience for everyone. The positive festival atmosphere was intoxicating and you knew that a great time was going to be had by all from the moment you arrived in Newry as first impressions were breath taking. The effort that went into decorating the city was not only extremely impressive but stimulated a sense of positivity and progression.

Hundreds of huge rainbow flags were blowing perfectly on the tail end of a gentle summer breeze on top of almost every lamp post along the full length of the beautiful old canal system that runs parallel to Buttercrane shopping centre and Canal Court Hotel and Spa. With the weather on everyone’s side it felt like a completely different city and the good vibes were clearly oozing out effortlessly as children and families all had smiles on their faces everywhere you looked.

The characters on stilts would speak to the crowd as they walked passed by, there we’re many with different accents from all around the world, there were little flags, hats and friendship bracelets being sold on every corner,

candy floss, parades and demonstrations of support, a huge concert stage where local singer songwriters performed to a very impressive high standard, market stalls, the list goes on and more importantly not once did we see or hear of any unsavoury incidents.

Newry Pride is a superb festival and a very good family friendly event too, with excellent live music entertainment throughout to usher on the outstanding parades you would not want to miss this all-round stellar event.

PROUD HISTORY The history of Pride Month is saddening but something the LGBTQ+ community takes pride in. Without the bravery of those people protesting, the progression of rights for gay people may not have been where it is today.

Pride celebrations in every city differ, but you can expect parades, parties, picnics and much more! People have been celebrating gay pride since the Stonewall riots, but President Clinton officially declared June/August Gay and Lesbian Pride month in 2000. And in 2009, President Obama updated the name of the months to LGBT Pride Month.

Alexis Cox Belfast City Drag Queen Comedian

Union Street’s famous Sunday bingo show hosted by Tina Leggs Tantrum, which she states is one of her proudest achievements. Alexis also went on to compete in Davina Devine’s ‘The Apprentice’ in ‘The George’ in Dublin, then Belfast’s ‘Opportunity Frocks’.

This gave Alexis the drive to push herself to do her own thing so she started taking bookings for private parties and began to organise her own events with a series of Christmas gigs around the North of Ireland alongside local Drag legend ‘Kandy Carousel’.

“Always remember, you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think” Samuel (Sam) Shannon-Anderson is also known as Alexis Cox who is a small town freelance Drag Queen from Cookstown Co Tyrone in Northern Ireland with a hilarious sense of humour that has made her extremely popular on the local scene.

In 2011 Sam and husband to be Adrian moved to the capital city of Belfast, where Sam had his eyes opened when introduced to the gay scene and the world of Drag.

Sam was never interested in drag prior to this. It was Belfast’s finest local queens like ‘Tina Leggs Tantrum’ and ‘Roxy Tumbledryer’ who inspired Alexis.

So from there she decided to give it a go and took to entering her first competition where she graced the stage for the first time under the name of Alexis Cox at DHD’s ‘Dragons Hen Den’ in Limerick where she became crowned DHD’s Miss Congeniality 2016.

Alexis Cox then went onto make guest appearances on the Belfast LGBTQ scene, such as Mavrick Bar and

From there Alexis reached out and created her own online live video on Facebook ‘The Boy Behind The Painted Smile’ where she speaks of her battles with depression, past addictions and mental breakdown of which she endured when starting out in drag, in the hope to reach out to others to show people “it’s OK not to be OK” and speak out. This led to Alexis being nominated for the ‘Unsung Hero Of The Year’ award at the GNI Awards 2018 (Gay Northern Ireland).

Recently Alexis and her newly wed husband moved back to the sticks (meaning countryside) in Cookstown to be closer to her son and family, where she continues to do her own thing hosting her own Alexi’oke night in Jakes Cocktail Bar for a few months.

During this time Alexis was approached by a fellow Drag Queen to take part in Belfast Alternative Fashion Week organised by the team at World Equal at Belfast castle where she and her husband walked for a wonderful designer Jeanjacket Designs. This was a whole new experience she loved and is looking forward to the next show in October of this year, where she will get to showcase her new signature jacket designed by Jeanjacket Designs. Alexis is also taking loads of private party and wedding bookings both North and South of the Island of Ireland and is excited for the up and coming Belfast Pride 2019.

Alexis has some exciting news as she is busy working away on other big projects at the moment and says “all shall be revealed in good time”.

Q1. How did you get into becoming an editor for GNI Magazine and how long has the magazine been established?

A1. I have worked for Newspapers/Magazines for around fifteen years, I moved from Johnston Press to GNI almost four years ago initially the role was solely sales though over time this changed, as Operations Director. I look after everything from the day-to-day running, editorial, reviews, sales, invoices and much more.

Q2. How does it feel to be the voice of the Northern Ireland LGBTQ+ community and changing people’s negative perceptions towards the LGBTQ+ community?

A2. It can be a challenge though so rewarding when people’s/businesses perceptions change towards our community. It’s a known fact that Northern Ireland is lagging behind the rest of the UK though change is on the horizon.

Q3. Your not only a very talented editor but your also a very talented actor, singer and dancer. How do you juggle your heavy workload and still have time for your hobbies?

A3. Thanks, I’m flattered :) I have been involved with musical theatre for eighteen years. During this time I have had some amazing opportunities. Over the years I have had the chance to play iconic characters in wonderful venues across the county. It can be very demanding and a juggling act at times though for the most part it doesn’t clash with my day job, rehearsals and performances tend to be in the evenings and weekends.

Q4. What’s your most memorable article?

A4. There isn’t one specific article that springs to mind though what really excites me is when we secure interviews and covers with famous and affluent people such as Ru Paul, Sir Ian McKellen and Olly Murs to name a few.

Q5. Share with us an experience when you applied changes to improve the magazine?

A5. GNI is always evolving, the biggest thing for us is the growth and reach via our online platforms, social media, Issuu etc., they allow us to tap into an alternative audience from those who typically buy and read the print

magazine. We also recently added an additional sixteen pages, have had a subtle re-brand and introduced new sections columns and features, which we hope are a hit with our readers.

Q6. I believe you love to travel the world. Does this inspire you with ideas for the next issue of GNI for when you get back home?

A6. I do, I love to explore. There is a big world out there. I have been to many wonderful places though there are still hundreds of places on the bucket list lol. If I’m honest the trips away are generally for me to unwind and experience new things.

Q7. Can you think of an example of when you thought outside the box? If so, did it help your creative process?

A7. As a Thespian and Director it’s my job to think out of the box lol. I feel that if things aren’t broke don’t fix it though things can also get stagnant and need spicing up every once in a while. In work we do this by introducing new things that people can relate to, for example we have introduced a transformation section, real life stories and an Agony Aunt, these help keep the magazine feeling fresh.

Q8. Do you have anything exciting in the pipeline for the GNI awards this year?

A8. Our fourth awards are scheduled to take place on Friday 8th November, we are staying in the Crowne Plaza Shawsbridge, it is a great venue. Over the next couple of months, we will be finalising presenters and entertainment etc. Going by the experience of previous years it is going to be an amazing evening. Santander are back as our headline sponsor for a third year, The Rainbow Project is our charity partner and The Kremlin, Ulster Bank, Kellys Cellars and loads more are on board as award sponsors. Q9. What is the most challenging part of writing text, such as stories, articles, editorials, or newsletters?

A9. We are lucky to have a dedicated group of columnists and feature writers that are talented in their own fields.

I find getting interviews to be the biggest challenge, there 39

are always so many people to go through trying to get things in place though once the t’s are crossed and i’s dotted doing the interview is the easy part.

Q10. How are you finding moving into your new beautiful offices opposite the Union Street Bar and being in the heart of the LGBTQ+ community?

A10. It has been great, we couldn’t ask for a better location, slap bang in the middle of the gay quarter, as with all moves it takes a while to settle in and decorate, we have still a few small jobs to finish though so far so good, we have great neighbours.

Q11. Did you enjoy your time acting, singing and dancing in Northern Ireland’s version of Grease? We heard your reviews and the shows were amazing!

How did this all come about and will we see more of you doing this kind of thing in the future, if so when and where?

A11. I loved it thanks. I played the lead Danny Zuko. It was such fun. Grease is one of those shows we all grew up with and subconsciously know the songs and dialogue.

It came about as most shows, I heard of the production coming up, I auditioned and was fortunate to be offered the part.

Next on the cards is another stint playing Aladdin. This will be my third time playing the role. This time it is for a Christmas Panto in The Crescent Arts Centre. I have had six weeks off so far though come September it will be straight back into rehearsals for Aladdin and some other projects.

Q12. Where do you see GNI in ten years and who would you love to interview the most that you have not yet had the chance to do so?

A12. Having just undergone a pile of changes it’s hard to imagine how GNI will be in the future though we aspire to continue to grow and engage with the LGBTQ+ community across the Island and further afield. In terms of interviews, I like to dream big, Madonna, Cher, Lady Gaga any of those would b epic!

Michael Browne isn’t your average 30-year-old, he has been an artist for 26 years of his life. He describes his child hood as somewhat isolated even as much to say he was an introvert and was happiest sketching indoors to his heart’s content.

His school years were tough and like many other young gay men he was teased and bullied a lot, so art was his only outlet. His family where fantastic and supported him with everything.

He says ‘’My mother is my hero, it sounds cliché, but the woman raised six of us on her own so in my eyes she is god and all I’ve ever wanted to do was make her unbelievably proud which I’m very happy to say it happened a few times in my career’’.

Michael Browne quit school early, at just 15 he just couldn’t hack it anymore and worked on whatever there was to earn money odd jobs and helping friends and family.

At 17 Michael did a post leaving certificate course in portfolio building from this he was able secure an apprentice position in a tattoo studio in Dublin, however after 8 months of tattooing It wasn’t for him. So, it was Back to the drawing board.

His mother suggested that he become a makeup artist.

He was openly gay and did not need his job to define his sexuality.

realistically in life I’m not actually chasing that ‘Happiness’ I’m just living in it and enjoying every second.

The amount of diversity in the things I do is why I love doing what I do and why I love being an artist of many forms.

I am a very strong believer in if you do what you love, what you’re passionate about and what makes you happy for long enough you can’t do anything else put succeed in that”.

Michael stands out as his favourites are window dressing, oil painting, acrylic painting, sculpture, special effects makeup, editorial makeup artist, weddings, shoots film, theatre, photography, body painting, window painting… the list goes on!

The focus of his art is to create something from seemingly nothing, just two people and some ideas. So, he will choose a model, often his friends who he says are great to work with as they know what he is capable of and give him free reign.

His process is very natural, he will work with the models shapes and shades to Illustrate what the makeup will look like with a gentle nudge of Michaels own imagination, creativity and flair.

Michael reluctantly applied to the position of a makeup artist on counter in Brown Thomas, Dublin.

He got the job and from that day was hooked, he now has 10 years of makeup experience and with his 26 years as an artist he’s savvy and putting his hands to anything and everything.

Michael says ‘’I love doing them all; I have never wanted to be one thing. It was always a question I thought through life. Why is it that we all must be one thing?? I want to be all things and do all the things that I enjoy in life, I’ve been very happy for several years already so 45

Q1. What qualities do you think are necessary to be a PR guru?

A1. Drive, enthusiasm, passion for people, a positive attitude, top media connections, building a solid reputation are all important factors that you require in order to be a success in PR. Q2. As an inspirational and influential PR guru, you must be used to working with demanding clients!

Have you ever dealt with a disagreement on a PR plan or a campaign from a one or more of those clients and how did you handle it?

A2. Most of my clients are looking for a unique approach and want to be at the ‘fashionable events’ or ‘latest restaurant’ as well as having me personally handling all of their publicity which is what I love doing! Sometimes there are minor disagreements but generally it all works out well for my clients and they come back to me again and again plus they recommend me to their friends and followers Q3. Describe a time when you had to create a PR approach that satisfied a client’s expectations while staying true to the best approach.

A3. Interesting question… hmmm… each of my clients I treat individually as they are all very different…bear in mind some are stars and others mega-stars so a bit of pampering goes a long way with each of them and I tend to spend a lot of my time listening to what they want and fulfilling their requests!

Q4. What was the motivation that made you want a career in PR and when did you start out?

A4. My late mother Pamela who hosted dinner parties during my childhood as she was a people’s person and my inspiration was the ‘Queen Of PR’ Lynne Franks.

It all kicked off in the 1994 working with the likes of Bryan Adams, Madonna, Trudie Styler, Annie Lennox, Bananarama, Colin Jackson (world hurdling champion athlete).

Q5. Can you tell me about a PR campaign that you thought worked well and why?

A4. Yes, in May 2005 we launched at the Cannes Film Festival “Sabachiba” sponsored by Saatchi and Saatchi,

flying the 1994 Brazilian World Cup winning football team creating a pitch on the beach, followed by 3 parties, playing 5 a side including: 50 Cent, Sting.

Q6. Can you tell me about a PR campaign that you thought failed and why?

A6. Not really as I’m not involved in this business to let anyone down, otherwise I’d be ‘persona non grata’ fairly quickly and be relegated to the 2nd division to put it mildly!

Q7. What current news stories would you want to hijack for your latest client?

A7. Nowadays there is so much ‘fake news’ and ‘hype’ so in order to cut through that I try to work out how I can get maximum positive exposure for my client and make sure that the mainstream media report the facts and I have a key relationships with editors and journalists who I have known for many years since I first started.

Q8. Can you tell me about a favourite campaign you worked on and any funny stories that happened to you or your clients?

A8. Absolutely, however I have to be discreet as there are so many stories and I don’t want to embarrass anyone plus I don’t want to be made to leave the country!

Q9. How would you deal with a PR crisis?

A9. Without mentioning any names I’ve been called many times in the early hours of the morning by solicitors or the Police to assist clients who have had too much to drink.

Clients can always rest assured that they can contact me 24/7 bearing in mind I have clients across major cities around the world!

Q10. How do you use social media to reach and impress traditional media?

A10. I mostly use Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to publicise my events and my clients which can then be used by the traditional publications, newspapers and television… the clients and brands themselves have their own social media which is how they promote their products and that gets picked up by image libraries.

Q11. Can you give me 3 – 5 key publications and/ or journalists that you would want to target for top client?

A11. Conde Naste, BBC, ITV, Channel 4, NBC, ABC, Disney, Universal, Warners, Sony and many well-known journalists from newspapers and magazines.

Q12. Tell me about your work with BAFTA and the Hollywood Film Industry?

A12. Over the years I have attended many events including BAFTA as well as Ivor Novello Awards, OSCARS, Golden Globes, Grammy, Brits, Olivier Awards and Billboard Awards.

Q13. What would you do if a client, agent or manager disagreed with your PR strategy?

A13. If I don’t feel right about a client then I would rather graciously and respectfully walk away from that situation.

Q14. Describe a time you had to manage negative media attention?

A14. Only a couple of times in my lengthy career have I had to deal with the late Max Clifford PR who was my main rival.

Q15. What kind of PR do you do?

A15. Music, Sport, Fashion, Film, Television, Artists, Chefs, Entrepreneurs, Politicians and high profile families.

Q16. What do you love most about your career in PR? The people I work with and the opportunities it has given me over the past quarter of a century involving parties, travel and charities.

Q17. What is your Golden Rule in PR? A18. To do an outstanding job and have fun along the way!

Q18. Do you have any favourite clients and do you also socialise with them or is it strictly a business relationship?

A19. All of my clients become my friends so I can enjoy socialising whilst doing business.

Q20. Finally we would love you to explain your role in the “Global Citizen” movement to end poverty and other charities?

A21. I am an ambassador/supporter to Global Citizen (to end poverty), Centrepoint (for the homeless in the UK), British Red Cross, Born Free, Teens Unite (for teenagers living with cancer), The Royal Foundation (mental health awareness), MacMillan Cancer.

“The Drag BUG had Bitten ME” Kitty Catt comes from a rural country town in Ireland called Tyrone. From a very early age it was never unusual for Kitty to be wearing a wig and running around the streets with a broom pretending to be a witch from the movie ‘Hocus Pocus’.

what she describes as an ‘oppressive environment’ of rural village life anchored down, it was not the same.

When the time came a move to college in Belfast, this provided a more welcome environment of acceptance within the wider LGBTQ community enabling Kitty to enjoy and embrace her true identity without the chains of the rural frown breathing down her neck.

Hosting events across Belfast and Derry with other well know established Queens in Northern Ireland such as Alexis Cox, Portia D, Candy Carousel, modelling in fashion shows such as Belfast Alternative Fashion Week, hosting in Opportunity Frocks, Envy Nightclub, Union Street / Shoe Factory and Mavericks has proven Kitty to be a very desired Queen all round.

Meeting Queens everywhere it was a heavenly place to be and helped Kitty eventually make her way into RuPaul’s Drag Race, which became the lightbulb moment for her. When the joy of college ended and the return to

Tina Leggs Tantrum: “Northern Ireland’s Top Drag Queen Q1. Firstly, I’d like to say thank you for the interview it’s an absolute pleasure to meet you. I will get the obvious questions out of the way first. Your one of the few Drag Queens in Northern Ireland to have kept yourself at the top of your game for the last 20 year’s.

What is the recipe for success?

A1. My secret recipe in becoming and remaining one of Northern Ireland top Drag Queens has to be a blend of hard work, determination, passion and definitely good luck.

Q5. What does Drag mean to you? How do you feel when dressed in drag and performing in front of large audiences?

A5. Performing in Drag for me is just amazingly wonderful, relaxing and yet I can be nervous at times but it’s very much exhilarating. I love the transformation going from Gerry to Tina because I know I’m going to be in a different head-space, at a different level of confidence, a different level of comedy, a different way of thinking which makes me feel really good. I love the nerves and the adrenaline when walking into a room up to 400 people Q6. What’s your next big goal or dream as a Drag Artist?

A6. I have different dreams and goals. But my main goal is to remain strong, dedicated, passionate and loyal to both Gerry and Tina always.

Q2. When did you start doing Drag along with dancing and comedy as part of your act and performance?

A2. My mixture of choreography, costumes and comedy all came from my youth when I first was a dancer, then had my own dance school. Combined with my very outgoing with lights, stage and a microphone to me still is bliss.

Q7. How does it feel to be a well-known drag artist all over Ireland and to be well respected as multitalented?

A7. It feels very flattering and thank you for looking at me as a well-respected talented Drag Queen that truly means a lot when people say that about Tina Leggs.

Q3. How did you find out start getting into the Drag culture? Was it a slow process or an overnight decision? Did you have to build up confidence to go out in Drag or did your Drag persona have enough confidence already?

A3. I’ve always been involved in Caio Graffiti Dance ever since I was very little and I never ever really thought about becoming a Drag Queen. The only other Drag Queen I saw was on television and that was Lily Savage. When I saw Lily, that’s when and why it all began. I’ve always been very confident. I have never been afraid of performances or big crowds so the confidence was always there. I was a bit intimidated at the start but faced it anyway.

Q8. Who or what are your biggest inspirations for your Drag persona? (Does not have to be another Drag Queen, it can be anyone or anything!)

A8. My biggest inspiration will always be my mother Terry.

She is strong, independent, super smart, clever, full of life and my mother has always guided me even though I’m 51. She always has words of wisdom, she is a very deep thinker and the one thing my mother always told me, which is a beautiful thing is, ‘if you can learn to master your patience then what you want, what you dream, what you hope for it will come true, just be patient’ those words will resonate with me for the rest of my life. I am 21 years in Drag and I understand what that means now.

Q4. Would you say that before you started Drag when identifying as male that you had any typically feminine qualities?

A4. Ha ha, the only female and femininity that Tina has is probably her wigs and her shoes I’m sure everyone knows by now. Tina is definitely not a real woman LOL.

Q9. How far does your Drag persona differ from you in everyday life?

A9. Daytime Jerry is very normal very quiet very practical goes to the gym four times a week walks his dog for five times a day. Tina however is high-profile, high energy, high kicks, very outgoing, so the two are definitely salt 61

and vinegar, chalk and cheese, silk and steel but both beautiful and equal in every way.

Q10. We love your appearances on various TV programs over the years. Is there a TV show you would love to be involved with in the future?

A10. My dream Tina job would be to host a TV gameshow based in Northern Ireland.

Q11. How did it feel to have the whole LGBT community shocked by your sudden decision to leave the Sunday Bingo Show?

A11. Leaving the Sunday Bingo Show will always be something that tugs at my heartstrings but it was something I had to do. I know that the LGBTQ community, who have stood by me since I started in drag are shocked that I made that decision however if I had stayed then I would have been afraid of what was going to happen. On the inside I just didn’t feel the same anymore and I felt the show was going in one direction and Tina was going in the other. It was so hard, it was so tough it almost broke my heart however, almost 2 years down the line I know that if there is something that you truly love and you let it go and you don’t mess it up, then you have done the right thing.

Q12. What was your favourite experience’s for corunning and hosting Opportunity Frocks?

A12. My favourite experience with Opportunity Frocks will always be the underdog, the person who everyone thought couldn’t win but as soon as he stepped on stage everyone realised that she was the winner. There are so many to choose from but in my eyes everyone who took part in opportunity frocks is was and will always be a winner. I love the event so much. I am so proud of it. Myself, Glenn McGookin, Peter Hamil and the Belfast Pride Community will never forget it. Long live Opportunity Frocks.

Q13. How does it feel being a massive role model for today’s LGBTQ youth and giving the young generation inspiration to overcome what life throws at them?

A13. I’ve always loved sharing my stage especially with the young kids. I will always have time for the young ones 62

who walk in with positivity in their eyes while carrying the fear of being different by wearing women’s clothes as they try putting on make-up on and perform. I’ll always do that for the LGBTQ youth today, tomorrow and forever.

Q14. Would you say your Drag persona is a way of uniting people together through comedy and femininity?

A14. I would definitely say that Tina and femininity go together. My drag persona is very natural. Sometimes harsh but extremely funny. Tina loves uniting communities and doesn’t really mind where she works or who she works with. The team embraces everyone.

Q15. Who would be your ultimate duet with another Drag Queen past or present?

A15.If I had the choice to do a duet with another Drag Queen it definitely would have to be with Shirley Temple Bar. I just idolise love and worship her she is on my wavelength for sarcastic dark cheeky humour.

Q16. What can we expect in the future from Tina Leggs Tantrum that is going to be amazing?

A16. As soon as Tina finds out, she will let everyone know.

Interviewer: How did you come about your name and style of Drag?

When I was first painted up in Drag I looked like the actress Ricky Lake from the movie Hairspray.

The queens who put me in Drag suggested I take the name Darienne Lake after a nearby amusement park named Darien Lake. Like the theme park, I’m two tons of fun. Twisted steel and sex appeal.

Interviewer: With body confidence on everybody’s lips and RuPaul’s constant diverse contestants how do you feel you represent who you are?

There was something magical that happened when I was first done up in Drag. I felt like a work of art. A thing of beauty. Growing up a chubby kid, I never felt as cute or sexy as the other boys. Drag gave me confidence in my curves. I didn’t have to look like other boys and girls to be my own brand of gorgeous.

Interviewer: Who/what are some of your biggest influences?

I started Drag in the early 90s but have the influences from my favourite 80s artists. Boy George and Pete Burns were some of my favourite gender bending artists.

Then RuPaul hit the scene and her attitude and flamboyance caught my attention.

I then learned about Divine and how she was a powerhouse pioneer for Drag. With a not-to-be-fuckedwith personality, in your face and unapologetic, Divine rocked my socks off.

Interviewer: What does Drag mean to you?

Drag completes me. It fills in the nooks and crannies of who I am. Covers up my flaws, polishes the sparkle in my personality. Drag is the blood that runs through my soul.

Interviewer: So, after all your success when did you have that pinch yourself-moment? Was it on Rupaul??

I had some pinch myself moments being on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Watching it, I even had some kick myself in the mouth moments. But with all the traveling around 66

the globe and getting recognized, I still feel like it’s all a wonderful dream that I’d rather not wake up from.

Interviewer: What has been your most memorable moment in your career?

When I first came out of the closet, I attended a gay pride parade. Then a few years later, I travelled to NYC to see it. After getting on RuPaul’s Drag Race, I was invited to be in the parade. I never thought as a small-town gay, that I would ever get to be on a float in one of the most major cities in the world, for gay pride. Luckily it was so hot, so the tears of joy blended with my sweat.

And Finally where do you see Drags future heading and of course yours? What’s next for you?

I’ve been watching the evolution of Drag and seeing how it’s becoming more and more mainstream rather than just accepted. All forms of Drag are being recognized and respected. I love seeing new competitions like Dragula by the Boulet Brothers. Showcasing talent that isn’t the “safe for VH1 audience” like RPDR. I look forward to competitions for cis queens, Trans boys and Trans girls.

Something out of our comfort zone. Lately I’ve been stepping out of my comfort zone and exploring what other talents I have to offer. I’ve been singing and doing live comedy with my Drag Race sisters, Mrs. Kasha Davis and Pandora Boxx.

After DragWorldUK, we will be in Provincetown the second half of August at the Pilgrim House.

Bethany King is a 21-year-old Makeup artist from Glasgow, Scotland. Fully qualified in the art of Makeup/SFX/Prosthetic Artist, she graduated from West College Scotland in June 2017. However, there has been a buzz about her makeup in the industry for the past three years.

Bethany currently works in Neon Salon, which is located in the south of Glasgow. This is where she encourages clients to be their true selves and allow their creative side shine. Beth’s aim as a makeup artist is to help people express themselves through the art of makeup, this can be a natural bridal look for their big day, full glam, Drag makeup or high fashion/avant garde looks. Beth also does freelance work, usually on photo-shoots or TV / Film work helping create special effects and creature creating.

All prosthetics and special effects are handmade by Beth and they are custom made to fit everyone.

Beth says; ‘’I enjoy thinking outside the box and creating full body looks to change the appearance of the actor / actress to suit the role’’. Beth will continue to learn and fine tune her skills, after what she created at Edinburgh Alternative Fashion Week we are excited to see how bright her future is. Interviewer: How did you come about the name and style of Drag?

When I started experimenting with makeup, clothes, music and art, I was at University and I was studying contemporary theatre, arty farty I know! I was obsessed with Leigh Bowery and the whole movement surrounding him. I loved that he didn’t need a Drag name it was still his name, so I know I wanted to be Danny or Daniel and then once I started wearing a glitter beard it was Danny with the beard and that just stuck really!

And when did you notice you had such a powerful voice?

It was previous Drag Idol winner La Voix who suggested I take part in Drag Idol before that I was just whaling along to a song or two whilst hosting other cabaret acts!

Interviewer: What has been your most memorable moment in your career?

I think BGT was a highlight and something I’ll never forget. I’m very lucky that I still get to work in some amazing LGBT+ venues all over the UK but now because of the show I get to also perform to people who might not ever go and see a Drag show normally at holiday parks or at pride and festival events!

Interviewer: So, after all your secures when did you have that pinch you’re self moment?

I think I still have pinch myself moments all the time, doing pride events to thousands of people like a rock star then being back in a local venue to 50 people or being booked for corporate events alongside national treasures like Joanna Lumley or even doing a six-week run in a theatre for Panto season there is no other job in the world like Drag!

Interviewer: Who/what are some of your biggest influences?

Leigh Bowery, Freddie Mercury, Bianca Del Rio and Paul O’Grady.

And Finally where do you see Drags future heading and of course yours?

Wow I mean I don’t think you could of predicted 10 years ago that there would be huge American Drag celebrities like we have today! So, it’s hard to say really! I think in the UK we will see more Drag on TV and it would be lovely to have Drag TV show dedicated to our wonderful art.

Interviewer: How did you come about the name?

A lot of people think the name “Hides” suggests I’m trying to be clever and that I’m hiding behind all the characters I’ve played on YouTube… It’s my real name.

Interviewer: Who/what are some of your biggest influences?

Art, fashion, architecture, pop culture, you name it I’m influenced by it. Saturday Night Live was one of the TV shows that influenced my comedy more than anything else… I love satire and character comedy almost as much as I love haute couture.

Interviewer: What does Drag mean to you?

Drag is a form of creative expression focused on exaggerated gender performance. It’s continuously changing, growing and evolving. There are no rules and not one, “correct” definition.

And finally, where do you see Drags future heading?

I see Drag becoming more and more mainstream, with Drag queens taking heading to Broadway, TV commercials, movies, Pop music etc. Soon there will be Drag queen game show hosts and politicians, you won’t be able to spit without hitting a Drag queen!

What made and inspired you to become a Drag Queen?

I have always been interested in Drag queens and dressing up. I grew up watching Drag performers like Hinge and Bracket, Stanley Baxter, Danny La Rue and the “unforgettable” Les Dawson – but for many years I had only been tempted to reveal my own alter ego in the safety net that existed at fancy dress parties.

Being able to express my creativity in such a direct way and seeing the reaction of others really pushed me into bringing it out more often. And so Kitty Tray was born. She’s a warm-hearted, funny and very eccentric character. She tends to say things that people are thinking but are too scared to say.

I took a lot of inspiration from watching RuPaul’s Drag Race for the first time. Seeing the incredible talent of those artists on the big screen, I knew that I had to get involved with this amazingly creative community. I started visiting clubs around the UK, honing my alter ego’s character and persona. I turned my garage into a photography and TV studio, where I started creating YouTube videos. I am overwhelmed by how well Kitty has been received online and by how many people enjoy watching her. In just under 8 months, she has over 500 subscribers and she is averaging 15,000 views per video.

Drag has also allowed me to travel and work in some great cities and meet wonderful like-minded people from all over the world. I am fortunate that my story, from teacher to Drag queen, received nationwide media coverage and has led to several television appearances.

Kitty would be impossible without the strong, small network of friends and fellow artists I rely on for support and advice.

When did you start doing Drag?

About 4 years ago after binge watching Rupaul Drag race for the first time, I was hooked and started tutorials on makeup and everything to do with Drag.

Who is your favourite RuPaul Drag artist and why?

This is very difficult as I have met so many and they all have great talent, but I resonate towards Sharon Needles. She is a proclaimed Halloween Queen and her music and humour

are very strong and unique and is so popular all year round.

How long does it take you to get ready for your show?

Makeup takes about an hour and half maybe a little longer if I am going on TV. I can do makeup myself but sometimes I have one of my makeup friends to help me for TV or big events. I class myself as still new at my craft and I have to juggle a lot of things during large events so cutting down the time to get ready helps.

What is your routine/prep for a show?

For a large show it takes times to arrange the acts and secure them. When that is complete I have to make sure all travel and accommodation is arranged. On the day it is an early start as I need to meet the artist and get them safely to the hotel. We like to take them for lunch and make sure they see at least a part of our great city. After that I go and get ready, normally starting about 4pm as I need to be at the venue ready to oversee the production side and ensure everyone is in place.

Rescue rooms have been very supportive and love our shows. After the how we make sure the main artist is back at the hotel safely or maybe if they are OK we go to the after party for a few drinks. Normally they need to leave very early so we stay awake to make sure that we say good bye to them. Then we sleep ha!

How do your shows work?

This year we have a mixture of one woman shows that focuses on the main star. We have so far worked with Shangela which sold out. Both myself and my Drag daughter Kitten T were the support acts for that show but normally we have other artists that form the Hauz of Kats.

With my local shows I have worked hard to promote local performers and am constantly working to create a great space for artists to learn their skill.

What do you love about Nottingham?

Nottingham is a fairly small compact city but it has history warmth and charm. I have lived in Nottingham since I was 18 and would find it difficult to move.

What’s the Drag scene in Nottingham compared to the rest of the UK/world?

Since the 1980’s Nottingham has struggled with its gay scene. There is a community but there are very few places that the community can go express itself.

The New Foresters has been open for many years and is a great place to go for a camp night out. It is 100% gay but everyone is welcome. I have been doing Drag for only 4 years and have worked hard to create places where people can enjoy the art of Drag. But there are others who have been working for years in Nottingham entertaining.

In Manchester there is focal point where you can go and choose what to see. Drag, like the gay scene is integrated into the community, but I feel that we still need something to help us pull together and help towards creating great events for the art that is Drag.

Who’s your style and makeup inspiration?

Kitty’s clothes are mainly influenced by English fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood. I work with a fabulous independent dressmaker, Melissa Bowler and Kitty’s jewellery and branding work is the result of working closely with my good friend and talented graphic designer, Barry Scotland. Kitty’s wardrobe and accessories are very important in securing her own personality. At times I feel like Kitty is still trying to find her feet. Yet I have a thirst to develop and improve my craft.

I did not want the makeup to be too over the top. I wanted people to be able to believe Kitty was a real person. It was a balance to hide my man features but to keep it looking like clown makeup.

What do you hope to accomplish being a Drag queen? Plans for the future?

My rescue room shows keep getting more popular so I would like to carry on with those and make sure more people get to see them. The shows are all 14 plus so and I am keen to create shows for younger people.

We did a dance workshop in collaboration with Backlit Gallery and Ru girl Laganja that was all about body 84

positivity within young adults. This was very successful and I would love to do more.

I would like to do more TV work, having been on Judge Geordie, Judge Rinder, Big Brothers Bit On The Side, Britain’s Got Talent and BBC documentaries. I would love to star in chat shows and cooking shows which are some of the things that Kitty could excel at. Oh and panto, I would love to do panto.

Where did the name Kitty come from?

I wanted a name that was classic but funny, something that people would warm to and imagine her living next door to you. Even though she is called Kitty, so is not fond of cats.

Best experience so far when performing as Kitty?

When I am in a sold out venue and everyone is chanting my name, it is an amazing feeling.

What to expect from one of your shows?

I have people who are Drag fans and they love the shows because it is also their passion. But it doesn’t matter if you are a Drag fan as people from all ages ranging from 14 to over 85 attend the shows. If you love laughter, entertainment, music and dancing then this kind of show is for you. I have people messaging to say they want to come but got no one to go with. I tell them they will make friends and I know many people who have made friends after coming to my shows.

5 fun facts about Kitty?

1. She can eat a Twix in a single bite.

2. She can does her own stunts.

3. She has a YouTube channel with 500 subscribers.

4. She loves to cook and is pretty good.

5. She is learning to sew and can create a handkerchief from scratch.

recognisable. She knows how to create the illusion of a real woman. When you look at her you have to look again and ask is that a real woman. Everybody thinks she is Spanish but originally she comes from Lithuania. She has a little bit of an accent which makes her character more interesting.

Another Drag daughter is Luna Moon. She is a Bio Queen, which means she is a biological woman in Drag.

She has been doing Drag for less than a year. Feline Scarlett Devereaux is the newest edition to the family.

She is the winner of a local competition that I created called “Kitty’s Drag Race”. With her stunning looks and electric personality she is the one to look out for in the future.

I cannot forget my two amazing helpers Kelsay and Jessica. They are always there for me when everything is crazy behind the stage.

And finally, can you tell us about your involvement in Nottingham Pride?

I am very excited to be working with gay pride. The hauz of kats and myself will be creating awareness and raising money for gay pride leading up to the main day.

On the day I will be on the float, which will be very exciting and on the main stage at 3:30pm hosting and entertaining with my kats. In the evening I will be hosting a Ru Paul show at Rescue Rooms, a one woman show by Sharon Needles.

Brief background on your kittens?

As you know Kitten T is my most beloved Drag daughter.

Her background is in art, she is very artistic person.

She is still fairly new on the Drag scene but is already 85

Latrice Royale is an icon. A legendary Queen who has 20 plus years of Drag experience behind her. Hailing from Compton, CA., Latrice made a name for herself on the South Florida Drag circuit two whole decades before finding lasting fame competing in Season 4 of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’.

Latrice was one of the most professional and beloved Queens to ever grace the workroom and main stage.

Every challenge she was given she competed with a firm stomp forward. This woman was not to be messed with, as seen in episode 5 ‘Snatch Game’ where Latrice showed just how a Queen should handle any obstacle in her way. But all drama aside, we got to see just how comical a Queen she is, who can forget her hilarious turn as a prison guard in episode 4 ‘Queens Behind Bars’, where Latrice delivered that unforgettable line ‘Get Those Nuts Away from My Face’.

Latrice was our true winner. Her motherly and caring nature was awarded with Miss Congeniality and then she went onto star on the first ever RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

Latrice Royale is certainly a force to be reckoned with.

Latrice describes herself as ‘large and in charge, chunky yet funky, bold but beautiful’. But more than that, we can see that she is nurturing and determined, strong yet kind, a REAL Queen that can lift your mood with just a smile as well as a mother to many with an honest heart.

It is this essence of strength, honesty and truthfulness that has endeared Latrice to her audience for many years.

Latrice won over both her fans and critics by being very open about her past (she was imprisoned and served a jail term for drug offences in the early 2000s).

Since her RuPaul days, Latrice had performed internationally at Pride events, club nights, countless personal appearances and a star turn on the silver screen, most recently in ‘Cherry Pop’.

It is a pleasure to see Drag Queens taking their rightful place on the Entertainment World Throne. And Latrice is certainly a trailblazer who more than earned her Crown & Sceptre (provided by Shandar) Latrice has also released a single ‘Excuse The Beauty (available on iTunes) with protégé, Epiphany Mattel.

Managing Epiphany has introduced Latrice to a new fan base and showcases how Latrice is an ally to the wider LGBTQ community.

Latrice is an inspiration for many African American LBGTQ people, as she shows that despite the odds being stacked against you, with determination and a good heart, you can be whatever you want to be. Latrice is a loving Queen and found love with her partner of five years, Christopher Hamblin. Not one to shy away from showing exactly how she feels, Latrice proposed to Christopher live on stage at Seattle Pride in 2016.

They both live together in Hollywood and run their own management company, LRI Management & Talent who represent the most refined and talented female impersonators and provide first class live entertainment, across America and the World.

How did you come about realising you had such a flair for fashion?

I’ve always been creative which led to me studying art at University. Being surrounded by creative types fostered a deeper interest in fashion.

I enjoy the individual creative elements involved in having a fashion line including photography, design, printing, sewing and marketing.

I started designing and printing t-shirts for myself and friends.

Based on this keen demand I then set up Kiss My Kunst for alternative fashion activists seeking an individual style of wearable art.

Alongside this I’ve grown Kiss My Kunst into a fashion line by designing and creating a wide range of male and female clothing, accessories, jewellery and even kid’s t-shirts.

Who/What are some of your biggest influences?

I pull influences from many different interests in my life such as films, books, bugs, taxidermy, photography, personal circumstances, travel, propaganda images and street art.

I’ve been actively involved in the Scottish music scene since the inception of Kiss My Kunst designing t-shirts and stage designs for music labels and bands as music and lyrics are one of my main influences.

Like most creatives, I didn’t want my work to impact on the environment, so I carefully sourced Earth Positive 100% organic cotton garments supported by the Fair Wear Foundation and Soil Association.

Using ethically produced, environmentally conscious attire manufactured solely using sustainable energy, printing with 100% solvent free paints therefore appealing to consumers who love to make bold style statements while still making responsible choices.

What does your work mean to you and what collection/piece has been most exciting to do?

A lot of my designs are personal to me. Starting with the design process whether being from a drawing or photo I have taken, through to developing the silk screen and executing the print in my studio.

I enjoy working this way as I can immerse myself in each stage ensuring I create a finished product I am happy with.

Probably the first enduring designs I created was the KunstFly which has become a recognisable staple in Kiss My Kunst.

This was created through mixed media taking photographs of crab claws found on the local beach and amalgamating these onto a drawing I had created of a hybrid bug. This bug was completed with a human brain scan resulting in a familiar image reminiscent of a death’shead hawkmoth.

More recently I’ve enjoyed working on the design of the KunstenFuhrer t-shirt which pulled inspiration from punk typography and design whilst allowing me to commemorate my cat soon after he passed away.

Where do you see your work heading and what do we all need to be watching out from you next?

As I enjoy experimenting with different paint mediums and print techniques for example silk screen, digital print and more recently using a spray gun to add a street art design aesthetic to my designs.

I feel that my future designs will continue to evolve with proven and experimental production techniques whilst staying within the recognisable design aesthetic that I have worked hard to create for Kiss My Kunst. As I don’t work in seasonal collections I have the opportunity to follow a creative path that is less constrained and seems to work for Kiss My Kunst.

I’m also excited about furthering the brand through developing the Kiss My Kunst record label which due to recent success will require more travel which always inspires my creativity. Also, watch out for some collaborations that we’re very excited about landing in the coming months.

Silvia studied Fine Art, Fashion Design and Accessories Design in Spain. When he arrived in the UK and established himself in London where he qualified as a HMUA for Fashion, Film, TV, Theatre and SPFX. He also is a face and body painter for many numerous events, clubs and parties. He studied at DFMA, Delamar and did a course with Matthew Smith, one of the most prestigious SFX makeup artists in the film industry.

Working as a makeup artist that once only did canvas is now working with skin, designing and creating looks and characters.

Silvia has also worked in TV, films, adverts, video-clips and London Fashion Week.

He will use his creativity to make people look and feel elevated. He will always focus on the detail and have the practical ability and an up-to-date knowledge of fashion and beauty trends.

He works quickly and accurately in time-pressured conditions and has the experience to know how long a subject will take to be made-up.

He love’s listening to his clients that tell him what they are looking for and then interpreting this into their makeup requirements.

His work’s purpose is to try and create beauty characters through creative artistic perspectives.
