Singer Songwriter Skyler Jett Q&A with Kieran Sherry – EQUAL ICONIC INTERVIEWS.
Q8. What is your favourite feeling after you have written an original song? A8. Completion.
Q1. What age where you when you wrote your first song? A1. Twelve years old was my first attempt at writing a proper lyric.
Q9. What kind of songs do you like to write the most? A9. Social conscious music. Music that heals, educates and solves problems over some amazing grooves.
Q2. Many singers are not songwriters, what inspired you to write your own songs? A2. Self expression and the feeling of liberation. To be able to sing and write lyrical content where others will sing along and put music to it is the most spectacular feeling ever.
Q10. How many styles of music have you written songs in? A10. I love it all it’s music, all genres.
Q3. Who are some of your favourite singers and songwriters? A3. Marvin Gaye, John Lennon, Bob Marley & many more. Q4. Your speciality is singing and writing songs, putting melody to your own lyrics. You also play a little bit of piano to help craft your song. You cannot read or write musical script so how do you craft the music around your lyrics and achieve a complete song with a full band? How do you translate what s in your head to other musicians if you cannot write it down in musical writing format for musicians to read from? A4. If it doesn’t feel right then it’s not right. Music is about feeling and emotion. I search for the relevant musicians for whatever genre of music I am writing in and then I orchestrate. Q5. What range is your voice and what key is it in? A5. I am a tenor baritone. Q6. Do you do any vocal warm-ups before you perform a song or sing? A6. Minimal. Q7. What are your proudest past musical achievements? A7. Performing on the highest grossing movie theme song of all time ‘My heart will go on’ for the blockbuster ‘TITANIC’.
Q11. What are you currently working on or towards in your musical career? A11. Spreading the love through conscious lyrical content. Q12. Have you any advice for aspiring songwriters? A12. Don’t listen to others, listen to yourself, this is what separates the stars from the superstars. Q13. Many artists struggle to find a balance between being creative and productive with the business end of their talent. Have you any words of wisdom in this area? A13. Don’t just sing, write and vice versa. Q14. You have been in the music industry for many years from back in the day where musicians where managed and owned by record companies which are nowadays dying on their feet because of the revolution of the internet and downloading but it can work positively for musicians in the way it provides a global platform for artists to get their work seen and heard by themselves while cutting out middle management. As artists promote their intellectual property themselves do you feel they are in a better position than in previous days where there was no internet, if so what advice would you give? A14. It’s all about TRAFFIC. Q15. How many songs have you written? A15. I’ve written over 2,500 songs! 13

After a fun couple of days we said our goodbyes but before we went our separate ways Shelley decided to do a quick photo shoot, so I naturally set up the lights and Skyler got his cool face on. Skyler also has a very stylish array of clothing and quite the trend setter in his own right. A few days after Skyler left he called Shelley and myself back to say he had a fantastic time, so much so he had written a song called ‘EQUAL’ and we we’re totally blown away by it, we had a listen to the demo version that night with the headphones on and a single candle lit. It was fantastic and we cannot wait for you all to hear it. It is currently going through a full production and we hope to hear it at the upcoming Belfast Alternative Fashion Week on February 23rd 2019 in the famous Belfast Castle – Northern Ireland, where you will get to meet Skyler Jett in person. Who knows it may come out sooner :-) We leave you with a gift of some information on Skyler’s new and dearest project “Music For Global Change”. Glen Molloy started off his artistic journey painting graffiti years ago doing tags and the usual antics surrounding the graffiti culture with illegal artworks across the city as best he could. Belfast was in the midst of a sectarian conflict and Glen believes it really was an achievement in itself that he didn’t end up in serious harm with Belfast being a very frightening place in the 90’s with tanks and guns being a daily sight on the streets. Let’s hear more from the man himself. Glen tells Equal Magazine… “I had drifted in and out of painting for almost 30 years but it wasn’t until 2014 I found myself at a dead end with little or no reasonable job prospects so I picked up the spray cans again and just hoped for the best. I went under the loosely attached title of graffiti artist for maybe two years until I actually started painting portraits on the street and almost overnight decided that it was Street Art that was the way forward for me. Graffiti didn’t have any real reward for me and it would have been very hard to survive financially, also the culture can be very aggressive with a lot of tensions within it, so a picture that speaks a thousand words seemed like a much better option compared to the thousands of words I had already written on the city walls and beyond that really didn’t say anything at all so a complete change of art for me!
Nowadays it’s all about impact that the art can have on the urban landscape. I really love painting faces in strange places in all those dull and neglected spaces, it now means thousands of people get to see my work on a daily basis which is really what any artist is looking to achieve. With graffiti it was only really about me and other graffiti writers now my artwork is for everybody young and old and on the street right in front of your face it can be brilliant self promotion but very hard work. Painting on the streets involves a lot of preparation and a certain amount of danger is involved with being out late in the middle of the night in various weather conditions the city can be quite hostile but it’s all worth the while when you get to see it completed. I am a self-taught artist and still have loads to learn and I struggle with a lot of my paintings, I just throw myself in at the deep end and hope it turns out OK and if it doesn’t I can always paint it out and start over again. It’s knowing when to stop is the hard part as it can it can be so easy to overwork a piece and ruin the likeness of a portrait. A piece is now finished for me when I can’t spot any mistakes, very simple and effective rather than trying to add more detail than is needed. My work can really vary from a simplistic graphic style almost like a big sticker to a very detailed fine art and illustrative style with everything from lettering, landscapes and still life all in one crazy mash up, no rules just as long as it looks good. 39

Mary Ginnifer is a Creative Director, Stylist, Artist and Designer from Cork. She has a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art and Design from the Crawford College of Art And Design Cork and has been working as a Stylist and Creative Director for the past five years, styling and directing fashion editorials for such prestigious fashion publications as The Irish Times, Life, Style Magazine, Institute Magazine and Flawless Magazine to name but a few. It is her creative concepts and ability to create captivating and often dark-romantic, otherworldly fashion stories through her styling, production design and creative direction, that make Mary’s conceptual work stand out from the rest and capture the attention of influential Fashion Editors such as Deirdre McQuillan of The Irish Times, who has written many feature articles on Mary describing her as a ‘Stylist who turns the ordinary into the extraordinary’ and has published several of her creative shoots. Mary’s roles are wide and varied from Director, Producer, Creative Director, Production Designer to Stylist and often Fashion Designer and MUA. She lives and breathes creativity and is hot demand from not only Fashion Photographers and the fashion industry but also is regularly called upon by Singers, Hair Salon Directors and Film Makers to bring her creative touch to their creative projects. Mary says she draws inspiration from so many things but in particular fine art, film, theatre, music and philosophy influence her creative thought process hugely. She also credits her late mother as being a huge inspiration to her, with happy memories of her mum telling her own enchanting fairy tales and making beautiful costumes for herself and her sisters for school plays and Halloween fuelling her creative passion. In her childhood her father also encouraged her love for drawing nature, which has also greatly informed Mary’s work. 47
WORLDEQUAL.COM
Her styling approach is often avant-garde peppered with contemporary touches and it is her attention to detail that leaves people in awe and comparing her creations to the work of Tim Walker and Alexander McQueen, much to her delight. The featured shoot entitled ‘Oui Rebel!’ supports these statements where old world decadence and Parisian charm meet in a most creative and fantastical way… “Drawing on my varied influences from both the fine art and haute couture worlds and my passion for antiques and vintage, I conceived of the concept, marrying old world decadence and a youthful angst, aptly titled ‘Oui Rebel!’. Referencing Delacroix’s charged ‘Liberty Leading the People’ and Westwood’s statement punk oeuvre, I playfully merged vintage and contemporary pieces creating painterly and fresh scenes. Whimsical touches set theatrically against the emotive and large scale canvases of Irish artist Tony O’ Connor, speak to my romantic sensibilities”. Cutting-edge couture was bountifully represented with such high-end Cork based boutiques as Samui, Olori, Monreal, Marc Cain, Salingers and Irish designers such as Valecia and Elaine Honey contributing, as well as my favourite go-to vintage havens; Mercury Goes Retrograde and The Retro Workshop Cork nationally and Gladrags Vintage stateside! Furthermore Topman’s youthful and street style was featured along with that of MacCarthy’s Ltd. Tongue-in-cheek military accents were provided by Medalika Designs, all the way from Lithuania and of course myself creating bespoke millinery, adding my own quirky touches. Beautifully crafted handbags that compliment he story came from Kent Stetson of Rhode Island, U.S.A.

EQUAL is very honoured to interview the ICONIC Tony Klinger: a British filmmaker, author, lecturer, media executive and much more. EQUAL was recently invited to attend the London première of Tony’s latest feature documentary “The Man Who Got Carter” (which will be released in 2019 and is executive produced by Colin Vaines). It is based on the life and career his beloved father Michael Klinger, a famous independent British film producer who made cult classic movies such as director Roman Polanski’s “Repulsion” (1965) starring Catherine Deneuve and “Cul-de-Sac” (1966) starring Donald Pleasance, as well as director Mike Hodges’ cult gangster thriller ‘Get Carter’ (1971) starring Michael Caine & Britt Ekland and ‘Pulp’ (1972) starring Michael Caine & Mickey Rooney, then producing the biggest UK box office hit of 1974 “Confessions Of A Window Cleaner” plus many other feature films. Tony was awarded The Lifetime Achievement Award at the Romford Film Festival on May 28, 2018. He is also a public speaker giving talks, speeches & lectures on a variety of themes.
Omar Sharif, Britt Ekland and Charlton Heston which became one of the best documentaries about the Cannes Film Festival and was more importantly also one of the most played documentaries in British Cinema History of the period with something like 1,400 play-dates. The amazing jazz score was composed by the world famous Ronnie Scott. Tony’s next feature film was a cult classic called ‘EXTREMES’. Made in 1971 with a musical score by Supertramp it focuses on the Isle of Wight festival, urban street life and the hard drug scene. Eye opening, harrowing and sometimes amusing this was a must see film of its time now released on DVD achieving the accolade of «Outstanding Film Of The Year at the London Film Festival 1971». This is documentary making at its raw edge, with cameras recording the wild times of young people seeking new ways to express themselves. Natural, informative, dynamic and sometimes sad this is a film about a time never to be repeated.
In 2016 Klinger launched his new company “GGG” a film making fun opportunity for all sections of society who want a quick film making opportunity and “Give-GetGo” a Community Outreach Project to facilitate training, education and fun for all sections of society who want to have film-making experiences of every type: give-get-go.com His theatrical play, “A Tired Heart & The Big C” premiered in 2015. Q1. Let’s talk about your underground magazine at school. A1. I was eleven years old and it was called Fanfare Magazine. It was my first effort at journalism to expose something that was wrong. I used to write articles secretly under different names in school. It was a secret society myself and other young boys in my school put together to try and highlight problems within our school environment.
position so I worked overtime and put my heart and soul into everything I was was doing, while others clocked off at five on the button. Repeating things over and over again until I perfected what I was working on at all times. I found it’s the passion, purity and dedication along with creating the best work that one can allow an audience to find any artist, its very strange how it works. It was a great time working on the AVENGERS
Q2. What made you choose your particular path? A2. I was the only Jewish boy in a Catholic school in London. I got punched on the nose on the first day, when I went home with the bloody nose my dad told me I had to learn how to run or fight. Luckily my grandfather’s best mate was a world welterweight boxing champion so I learned how to box. I then changed to a new school, which was very competitive. I actually started writing when I was eight or nine years old before Fanfare Magazine. In those days they used to show you lots of films, from watching these films we would have essays to write that would be entered into competitions, one was for Nestle and one for Cadburys. I won in one of these and tied in first place in the other one. The prize was as much chocolate you could eat. So from the age of eight or nine I knew exactly what I wanted to do, write stories for films, get chocolate.
Q5. Your father made very successful films such as ‘Get Carter’ ‘Repulsion’ ‘Cul-De-Sac’ ‘Gold’ ‘Shout At The Devil’ What are your fondest memories working with your Father Michael Klinger. A5. I worked with my father on a great deal of his work but not every production. I started working on these projects for extra money in the beginning, I couldn’t have had a better Dad not just with his work but his whole persona, and we were truly great friends and not just father and son. Just 3 years before he passed away we also went in to full partnership, its was a beautiful wonderful experience to work alongside him, know him as I grew older we became equals working alongside each other and later on our roles reversed. Such an amazing experience.
Q3. So! What was the first of your own productions you worked on? A3. It started when I was working on the TV series The Avengers in the daytime; I was also working for ITV and BBC. I borrowed equipment at night without telling anyone and put it back. This helped me make a documentary about the Jewish community called Mr J. It was to show that Jews, like everybody else, are not just one thing, they are everything. They are the businessmen, the poor guy on the corner, the sportsman, and designer, like everybody else. It was a thirty-minute documentary and some people who saw it said “what do you want to do next?, we’ll finance it!”. Q4. What was it like working on the Avengers? A4. I started work on The Avengers when I was about sixteen or seventeen, I seen an opportunity to get a 58
Q6. We have got to talk about ‘Twilight of the Gods, My Adventures with THE WHO’ which in its second edition has been retitled “The Who and I” A6. The film had its madness, sheer joy, power and its own complete energy. It was such a wonderful feeling when you took a moment to yourself and suddenly realised that I was working with the most successful live band in the world here, well at that time, and touring with them and exploring new horizons and that was just such a wonderful feeling I will never forget. It was like having a Rolls Royce in the drive and you could go driving in it anytime you want and to any destination. At the same time I was working with Deep Purple and various other bands. So with the book I just needed to get it out of my system and down on paper so that I could move on to other projects. I realised what I liked about it all is that I liked making documentaries and still to this day one of my main passions is documentaries in a film making sense.

Q7. What made you enter into an education career? A7. When I was living in America I had an involvement in a film company and a TV company in which I was in a powerful position but I wasn’t making films funnily enough and it should have been the other way around. I found myself in a position where I was to sign a large contract and I just sat with my wife at the airport in LA with the paperwork and I simply said ‘I don’t want to do this’ and my wife said ‘if you don’t want to do it don’t do it’ after that seal of approval we returned to England didn’t sign the contract and I thought what the hell am I going to do now. I had lost my passion and become immersed in business. My wife had secretly applied for me in a job in a university and I had no idea until I received a phone call to come in for the interview. The position was Associate Lecturer and I got the job and loved it and in the end through the students my passion started to come back, it was a glorious experience. I ended up being promoted becoming a Director of the University and after many years it really became a paperwork exercise and I rarely knew my students names and I decided it was time to go back to film making as I was totally supercharged I decided to give teaching a break for a while and get back into my passion, the art of documentaries. Q8. ‘Under Gods Table’ was published in 2017. Tell us a little bit about that. A8. Rewind to when I was 17… I had my first publishing opportunity when I was told by my friend and agent, Greg Smith, that the publishers liked my outline for a story called ‘The Kick’ and offered me a deal. I asked him how much and it was a couple of thousand and it would take me between 6 months and 2 years to write the book. I thought the money was terrible so I turned it down and never did another publishing deal until I was in my 50’s. So when I needed publishing a friend, David Courtney gave me a few numbers to call. Q9. EQUAL is really interested in ‘Just A Boy’ (soon to be a feature film) and the ethos behind it that many people can achieve magic no matter what their background. What was your inspiration and motivation for this? A9. This story is about one of redemption and what good can come out of bad. I was truly inspired by Richard McCann (introduced to me five years ago by Richard S Barnett) and his story, so I took the elements from his
Sunday Times No.1 best selling book ‘Just A Boy’ and broke it down and wrote it based on his experiences. It’s a fantastic and powerful story about an incredible man who has had to deal with in his lifetime what no other human being should have to deal with. There is an official website with an informative video trailer: justaboythefilm.co.uk Q10. Currently what project are you working on? A10. “THE SHOW MUST GO ON” is a musical and I started workshopping on that in November. It has some sensational elements in it of which I am very proud of. It’s a great collaboration with David Courtney. Q11.Tell us about ‘Havana’ the girl who sees an opportunity to change the world? A11. I’ve been working on this from when I was 17 about a girl that I met who I found inspirational and it’s a trilogy of films. I’ve been working on that one a while [laughs] it’s based on a true story. Q12. Tell us about ‘Full Circle’ A12. It was a story about my ex son in law who lost his father who he never knew as he was in the Navy. One of the submarines went down and no one knew what had happened and they we looking for it for 30 years and we FOUND IT!!!!!! Q13. Finishing off – Explain a little about ‘Give Get Go’ and what’s next A13. GGG breaks down as Give an idea, Get it made and Go sell it! It’s really to give people opportunities that would not normally get the opportunity! Nurturing raw creativity and helping shape futures. CURRENTLY I’m doing a film that I am writer and producer called Navegator. Finally I’m doing the rewriting on a film with Joseph Sultana from Romford called ‘Frequent Shadows’. ‘My drive comes from dying on the operating table during an operation, I’m fine now, if that doesn’t energise you nothing will. You never know what’s going to happen or when things are going to end, it could be today it could be 20 years from now. Who Knows? Live your passion now’. Vlasta Rauer Havlinova is a Slovakian fashion designer. Her first memory of wanting to create beautiful things dates back to her childhood, when she spent many afternoons watching her grandmother design and make outfits from scratch on her sewing machine. To pursue her own fashion dreams, Vlasta attended HND Fashion Technology Institute in Vranov, Slovakia, later moving to London where she studied Art and Design Foundation at Southwark College, completing her studies at Kent institute of Art and Design in Rochester with BA (hon) degree in Fashion Technology. After years of working for various fashion houses internationally, the next natural step was to establish her own brand, so Rauer Couture was born in 2012. The brand’s designs focus on two diametrically opposed lines: made to measure couture gowns with timeless designs with an ultra-feminine look and unusual avant-garde garments full of freedom of self-expression, with a concept behind each piece. Rauer Couture is a British based Womens-wear brand, designed and made exclusively in UK.

Mirsad
Solakovic THE BOOK BEGINS as The Bosnian War raged from 1992 to 1995. During the conflict, over 300,000 Bosniak civilians were executed during a mass ethnic cleansing that was described as the worst war atrocity since WWII. Mirsad Solakovic survived these events as a child. This is his story. “The Boy Who Said Nothing” is Solakovic’s poetic account of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian tragedy. From his own devastating childhood experiences of war in the former Yugoslavia, to his views of hope and peace for the future as an adult, this conceptual collection of poems describes the horrific crimes which occurred across his homeland as well as his own mental struggle. Solakovic’s 76
account of the heroes, villains, and horrors of civil war is balanced by his unique vision for the world; a true survivor’s perspective. Mirsad Solakovic lived through the ethnic cleansing of Bosnian civilians, until his family escaped to the UK. Following his experiences, he became difficult and untractable, and refused to speak English – until dedicated and sympathetic teachers at his school in Birmingham brought him back into contact with those around him. This thought-provoking account of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian tragedy paints a uniquely intimate portrait of survival, revealing pain that has never faded, yet has not crushed the human spirit. It is also an uplifting account of just how effective good teachers can be when faced with deeply troubled pupils.

Actor, model, writer 78
Introducing Joanna Andr actress / model / writer. Joanna started her career as a makeup artist gaining 12 years experience in the field. Applying makeup for models backstage at fashion shows she enjoys in particular the Sade English Fashion Show of which, the opportunity was given to her by her friend and fellow MUA Karen Salandy. Joanna loved being part of these events as it gave her the chance to socialise with many interesting people and network “everything happens for a reason” and “being in the right place at the right time” is actually a fact. Joanna is fluent in Greek, which led to her becoming the translator and director’s assistant on a documentary called “ the 11th day” The Battle of Crete 1941 directed by Christos Epperson. In this documentary they travelled to Greek islands where they met WW2 veterans both British and Greek. Listening to their stories of what they had experienced and how they dealt with situations inspired Joanna to fight for what she loved to do in life, realising it was acting. She stepped out from behind the cameras to become an actress. The chance for her to play different characters excited her fuelling her passion for acting. Joanna went on to study theatre/stage training for 2years in Greece and at this time she would apply for many roles while acting in many films with some well known actors these include “Two faces of January” starring Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen, “Brides” starring Damien Lewis and many more, “The Hatton Garden Job” starring Mathew Goode, Phil Daniels etc. and “Red Sky” starring Pihla Vitala. Over the passing years Joanna Andr gained much more experience learning how things work in the industry so she took on more featured roles, one such feature was that of a mother for Fulwell73 for a Christmas ad with Three Mobile. Joanna has met so many important people that to this day are still close friends in her life giving her the determination and motivation to keep pushing herself onwards and upwards. Joanna tells us “it’s always nice
to have positive people around supporting your goals and dreams, it boosts my energy to carry on in this unpredictable and exciting industry”. The more projects Joanna attended the more contacts she made. She says “I do find networking and socialising with so many people and attending many events is not such an easy thing but worth every minute of it as you are meeting many talented people and getting more knowledge. I do find it part of the job and very important to let people know the real you.” Joanna Andr has a feature role in “ This is Life” by Benny Bereal as Jessica Jane, other features are as Carrie in “Positive Result” by Allasdair Mcwilliam and Andrew Cant where you can find on Amazon and a project that will soon be seen on TV. Another project sees her as Adrienne Brown in “James Brown autopsy documentary” playing his wife, which will be coming out America and then the United Kingdom. Joanna’s enthusiastic drive and thirst for experience has brought her into the modelling world. She modelled in the historically SOLD OUT first ever London ‘Alternative’ Fashion show in Piccadilly Circus 2017 and Newry Alternative Fashion Week 2017 in Northern Ireland.
One of Joanna’s plans is to write a short film herself, which will be partly a true story. Joanna says “Title is (hashtag)#actorslife all I can say, leaving you with suspense…” She is also raising awareness for fibromyalgia “ the invisible illness” as doctors call it, as many people suffer from it but can’t explain it. Joanna Andr describes herself as a warm, genuine, humble beautiful lady and real stating “I’m just me”. She believes that hard work pays off and patience. She also advises people of any race/ age/size to follow there dreams as you will never know the outcome if you never try! 79

In 1980, after graduating from St Martins School of Art, Bruno was recruited by Island Records as an inhouse designer. He quickly rose through the ranks ending up as Creative Director with a seat on Island’s Board of Directors alongside founder Chris Blackwell. Working closely with Chris Blackwell, Bruno set up the first record company in-house art/video department called ‘Island Art’. Bruno directed his creative team, creating award winning campaigns for top Island artists like U2, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Steve Winwood, Robert Palmer,The B-52’’s, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Run DMC, Eric B & Rakim, Courtney Pine, Grace Jones, The Christians, Aswad, Amazulu, The Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, John Martyn, Jim Capaldi and many many more. During Bruno’s ten years at Island Records he got to work with a diverse range of unique artists and image makers including some of the top photographers, illustrators, fashion designers, film makers, model makers and cinematographers. Many of his design team at Island Art also went on to have great careers in the world of design. EQUAL’s Shelley Rodgers was delighted and honoured to interview creative guru Bruno, as it was Richard S Barnett, (Founder of IIWYK), who Bruno refers to as “Mr. Introduction”, who organised their face to face meeting at Tony Klinger’s film premiere “The Man Who Got Carter” in 2018, so without further ado: 83
WORLDEQUAL.COM
Q1. Do you think that creativity involves putting your heart and soul into your work? Or is it more like letting your mind flow freely to witness the surprising results of your actions? A1. I think the mind has to flow freely, I can’t imagine any other way really. Q2. What influenced you to choose your career? A2. Back in the 60’s my father Patrick Tilley ran a successful design group. As a kid, to earn some extra pocket money I used to work in his design studio. This was pre computers so all the artworks, had to be done by hand. That’s where it all started. It was the world I grew up in rather than a decision I made one day, a natural evolution if you will. In a way my father had passed the baton on to me. Q3. Do you strive to be unique in your creative endeavours? A3. It’s one of the important factors to create something that stands out from a very crowded market – that’s the tricky bit!. Q4. What do you do to keep yourself motivated and interested in your work? A4. I like to keep my eyes open, see other peoples work. I find that inspiring and motivating. Q5. Were you ever discouraged? If so, how did it affect your creativity? A5. In my career I’ve hit several barriers where I was told I wouldn’t be able to do something. This generally made me want to achieve even more. It took me a while to understand the doubters were the ones with the problem. For example when I was at art college I was asked what did I want to do? When I said I wanted to design record covers, they told me “You’re kidding, you’ll never achieve this! and that I should give up on that dream”. So despite that advice what I did for my graduation show was I redesigned all my favourite record covers and made that my show. Ironically when I’d left art college, it was them that sent me a job application from them saying that Island Records we’re looking for an in-house designer. I couldn’t get there quick enough. 84
Q6. If you had to start over, would you choose a different path in your career? A6. I think it may have been fun to have gone into film directing – I’m still aiming one day to direct a movie so that’s not off the cards. With that aim I’ve written several feature films. One is a real life ‘sex, drugs and rock n roll’ story based on my Island days. Q7. If you could become one of your characters/ works of art, which one would you choose? A7. I’m really very happy being myself – I’ve been very privileged to be able to do a job I love. Q8. In thinking about the things that you have created, is there something that you didn’t enjoy but the public/client may have loved? A8. On one video shoot in Jamaica, everything seemed to go wrong – generators broke down, the artists fell out, the crew couldn’t handle the heat – I called the experience “Hell in paradise”. Somehow with the right editing it worked out great with the single being a big hit. Q9. What is the best advice that you have been given? A9. A tutor at Central Saint Martin’s School of Arts once told me the key to powerful images making was to make the images dynamic – stand out in some way. I guess I’ve always applied that logic. Q10. What is creativity to you? Do you consider yourself to be creative? A10. It’s tuning into the creative cloud and being able to visualise your idea. People keep telling me I’m creative so I guess I must be. Q11. Do you critique your own work? Explain. A11. When I look back I’m am critical of past work, mainly in the detailing. Nowadays you can see exactly what a finished job will look like instantly. Back in the day pre computers there was a certain amount of guesswork involved. Also it doesn’t help that I’m basically a perfectionist.
Q12. Has rejection ever affected your creative process? A12. Who likes rejection? It throws up a range of emotions but as they say that should make you stronger. A multi millionaire once told me it’s the guy that keeps getting knocked down and can get back up that succeeds in the end – It certainly worked for him! Q13. What kind of jobs did you have before your career took off? A13. When I was 16 my father got me a job as runner for a top illustration agency Artist Partners. It gave me a great insight into world of illustration. Artist Partners was like a big family where I got to meet the wonderful artists they represented. My job was to pick up the finished artworks and then take them to the various advertising agencies. The office was based in Ham Yard in Soho, London and based on three floors. Each floor was divided up into sections where the artists worked. The range of talent was pretty amazing.
Conceptual artists like Brian Froud who created the world of Jim Hensons ‘Labyrinth’ starring David Bowie also Alan Lee who was the movie conceptual designer for Lord Of The Rings. As a 16 year old being around all that talent was very inspiring and really this experience is what made me want to go to art college. Q14. What was the biggest opposing force that you encountered on your creative journey? A14. The hardest thing I’ve found is trying to break into the film business. It’s like a club that you aren’t a member of. Q15. If you had the chance to live during a different artistic movement other than now, which one would you choose? A15. I like the here and now, technology is moving so fast it’s an exciting time to be around.
85

Q16. If you could interview a creative person (past or present), who would that person be? A16. Lot’s of artists really but one I’d love to have met was painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell best-known for his covers of The Saturday Evening Post. I love the humanity he captured in his work. Q17. What do you do to get into your creative zone? A17. Try and find a way to free myself of all distractions and focus on the job in hand. If all else fails I find going for a long walk often works preferably in a no phone signal environment. Q18. What is your favourite accomplishment? A18. There’s been many...Working with U2 from day one and watching them grow to No1 band in the world was pretty good. Bob Marley’ Legend campaign was another big one. Directing Aswad’s ‘Don’t turn around’ video which went to No 1. – Then there was Manga films which became huge. Q19. Do you ever create hidden meanings or messages in your work? A19. I think they are all full of subliminal messages. I’ve always seen it as one foot in the art and the other in marketing. Q20. Who do you define as a visionary? A20. For me my old boss Chris Blackwell was a visionary. He was very inspiring to be around. He seemed to get involved in an enormous range of projects from music to movies and I was lucky enough to put the campaigns together. Q21. Currently what’s next on the horizon? A21. Nowadays, I’m working on a wide range of projects varying from branding, delving into the world of augmented reality, some music projects, websites also I’m setting up an art based T-Shirt company to launch in the new year where I not only feature some of my designs but also some some very talented artists – I call it wearable art. Born in the early ‘50s in Cleveland, Ohio, Teddy grew up around neighbours Bobby Womack and his brothers, spending his time hanging out with many legends, household names and celebrities, before starting off his career in radio in 1975 where he was a producer on a jazz show for the RFG station in Atlanta. Moving to LA in 1976, he met Quincy Jones, becoming tour manager for singer Roberta Flack in 1977, later writing sleeve notes for The Brothers Johnson. Quincy’s friend Pete Long (who discovered Luther Vandross), gave Teddy the chance to write a stage play which was an instant success. Teddy’s creative experiences have ranged from working as a scriptwriter for cult seventies film director Melvin Van Peebles to directing music videos, to writing and producing the entertaining plays, “Obama On My Mind” (Ruby Turner sings the title track) and “Papa’s Bathtub Gin”, as well as many other musical theatre. As one of the founding fathers of Hip Hop in 1979 in New York, he formed rap band “The Funky Constellation” and had a hit with “Street Talk (Madam Rapper)” which was released on vinyl as a 7 inch single and promoted by his friend rap mogul Russell Simmons (creator of Def Jam Records) selling thousands of copies! An accomplished singer and composer, Teddy was thee main producer and creative force behind the touring stage tribute “I Remember Marvin” about the life and music of Marvin Gaye, which was a sell out show! As a crime author, he has written eight gritty, hard boiled detective novels about a Harlem-based private eye called “Devil Barnett”. Teddy is currently working with actor Antonio Fargas who played ‘Huggy Bear’ in TV’s “Starsky and Hutch” on a new theatrical production, as well as in talks about making a feature film with a major Hollywood studio. * EQUAL recommends on Netflix the “Quincy” documentary featuring the disco anthem “Stomp” by The Brothers Johnson and Executive Produced by Jane Rosenthal and Adam Fell
Shelley and I were introduced to Teddy by the one and only Richard S Barnett, (Founder of IIWYK), who Teddy says ‘…has more contacts than the phone directory and is like a Linkedin all by himself. 103

Interviewed by Art Journalist Kieran Sherry Q1. What literary pilgrimages have you gone on? A1. I started doing poetry and journalism at university. I then moved from that to script writing, from there to playwriting, from there to film writing and novels. Q2. What would you say is the most unethical practise in the publishing industry? A2. Plagiarism. Q3 Has any book ever made you cry? A3. I don’t think any book has ever made me cry. Q4. Does writing energise or exhaust you? A4. I think it can exhaust me because when I read I read very thoroughly. I read a lot but not excessively. Q5. What are common traps for young aspiring writers? A5. They try to be everything to everyone. Q6. Does a big ego help or hurt writers? A6. I think a big ego can hurt writers because you can learn so much when you open yourself up to learning from others. I think learning the craft is major. Q7. What is your writing kryptonite? A7. I don’t have any. I have been doing this for that long I just am used to it. I just do it! I am not afraid of anything. I have read so much work I don’t think a really need any kryptonite. Q8. Have you ever had writers block? A8. No. Q9. Do you try more to be original or deliver to readers what they want? A9. I think sometimes you have to do both. Q10. Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly? A10. I doubt it! 104
Q11. Do you want each book to stand on it’s own or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book? A11. I have written a series of detective books that has been on going for about twenty years. I intend to do ten of these in total and I am at number eight. It should take me four more years to complete the series. The main character connecting each book is ‘Devil Barnett’ a hard boiled private detective - no relation to the incredible Richard S Barnett who connected me to Skyler, Tony, Bruno, you guys and so many other iconic people in the entertainment business! Q12. If you could tell your younger writing self anything what would it be? A12. Ooooh, that’s an interesting question. I’d think maybe I’d just say to have more confidence. I’d still be doing the same thing as I am today but I’d say to have more confidence to my younger self. With age I have come to realise my voice is my voice. Q13. What kind of stories do you write? A13. I have written detective stories and horror stories. I have a horror film I plan to produce within the next five years. Q14. Where do you get your inspiration for content? A14. I have endless resources because I have met people from all over the world and I still meet new people, I can take elements from each person to create characters. I am 67 years old so a wealth of wisdom and experience is in my fingertips. Q15. Have you any other talents you draw inspiration from? A15. I have sung in jazz clubs for years, my father played the piano, I write songs, sing and perform them.

Q16. Do you have to do a lot of research for books? A16. Depending on the project. Now I am doing a detective book on pharmaceuticals industry so I am researching a lot on that. Some detective books have been based on Brazil so I travelled there for a bit to research many times. I done ‘RENEW YA HALLELUJAH’, which is a Gospel play, I didn’t have to do any research there as I grew up in the church. Q17. Are you working on anything new and awesome at the minute? A17. OH YEAH, ‘RENEW YA HALLELUJAH’. We just performed this musical gospel play I wrote and we have been getting standing ovations so we want to take it to the West End and make it into a Broadway production. That is what we are aiming for now with it. If you know you got something that touches people you should try and take it as far as it can go. Q18. Have you written any more musicals? A18. Well ‘RENEW YA HALLELUJAH’ is my sixth musical. I wrote one musical based on ‘The Hound Of The Baskervilles’, ‘Great Expectations’, I like Victoriana.
Q19. Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice. A19. Oh yeah, I think so yes. Q20. How did it all begin for you with writing in working with literature? A20. In my first year of university I studied Film & TV and I was working as part time writer for the city newspaper. In my last year of University I had two years of working in a television station in the film department. So when I finished University I got a job straight away and that job was writing. I had a professional career when I was in University. Q21. How many hours a day do you write? A21. Some days I write none, other days I write six hours maybe more, maybe less, it just depends on the project. Q22. What era in your life do you mostly write from? A22. Writing for me is like going to the supermarket. You have all these memories and experiences on shelves and you can pick anyone you want to put in your book. Any and all eras of my life and experiences can be drawn from at anytime there is no one particular era I focus on necessarily.
My first musical was back in 1987 it was about five women in a prison.
Q23. Do you write fact or fiction? A23. 98% Fiction.
People used to say “How can you write a musical about five women in a prison” well I just did and it worked, because nobody had done it before.
Q24. Why do you write so much fiction? A24. Because I can use my imagination the way I want to. It’s like making music you know. I like to do it the way I feel.
The funny thing about the play is the five women are all murderers and they are in a holding cell for 48 hours before it is decided what will be done with them, will they go to death row or high security, a mental institution, their relationship with the security guard etc. It’s an intense situation. 106
Q25. How does your crime stories work, do you begin with a death or does that happen later in the book or at the end? A25. I like my crime to happen earlier in the book. I like to get right into get the murder done in the first chapter then it’s all about figuring out how, why and who done it.
Q26. What are your top three crime books that you have written? A26. ‘Dead By Popular Demand’, ‘Wrong As Two Left Shoes’ & ‘Graveyard Samba’ but my musical play ‘RENEW YA HALLELUJAH’ is what we are pushing now. It’s about a dysfunctional family. Some of the quotes we are getting on this are incredible. One lady said “ ..it was the best thing she has seen since the Lion King…” and so after the standing ovations we have been getting it’s been followed up by amazing reviews.
Q27. Will there be any further development for this project.? A27. Yes the success of this play in London has already gotten some serious film people in both London and California talking about making a feature film of this project. To me they indicated that they believe that a gospel musical on film will have a natural audience and also because the story is one that will attract an international audience, so I am looking forward to this happening, which I think might be in 2019-2020. Shelly Rodgers – EQUAL ICONIC INTERVIEWS Introduced by Richard S. Barnett
Broadway is where we want to bring it to now, so we may well see how far we can go, with it going by the reaction so far. To watch a video trailer of ‘RENEW YA HALLELUJAH’ check out this Vimeo link: vimeo.com/300153667

My Past Some of my most vivid memories when I was growing up were those of film. The first time I saw Indiana dodge a moon sized boulder, Martin Brody face off against ‘that’ shark or Andy Dufresne giving us the best pay off of all time. Film has stuck with me, inspired me, amazed me and moulded me to create my own films. Finding my Dad’s JVC camcorder at aged ten and creating my very first films with my brothers, then sitting down four minutes later to watch them on the TV and that constant excitement of creating. That feeling for me has never gone away. The edits might take longer now, equipment has come on leaps and bounds, but that same excitement to create and tell a story is still there.
My Present I am constantly looking for new and interesting stories to tell and I like to try and make films in as many different genres and styles as I can. Short film as a way to tell those stories is fantastic, for me it allows very concise stories to be told, it also allows us to explore subjects and ideas in a really interesting way. In 2012 I won best film for my very first short film ‘Cerberus’ at an award ceremony held at The House of Commons for the ‘Film the House’ national competition. From there I have created and produced around 22 films, many have gone on to have success in film circuits and festivals and garnered awards. In 2014 I co-directed a dance short with renowned choreographer Del Mak called ‘Shift’ which won 7 awards including a special award from Madonna who rewarded us $10,000 to give to charities of our choice. In 2016 I created a sci-fi drama entitled ‘Human’ which won 10 awards and has featured in over 20 festivals worldwide, it has also raised almost 100,000 views on YouTube in it’s first two months live online.
Slowly but surely it is all about developing your network, expanding your knowledge of your craft, and in many ways, learning from your mistakes. No filmmaker will create their ideal piece first time. It is like the old saying ‘practice makes perfect’. Always explore a shot, or an idea if you believe in it. Sometimes a film shoot will create the unexpected, which wasn’t scripted or planned for and in many ways those end up being the little gems you take away. I wasn’t film school trained. I never read a book on film-making or the dos and don’t of doing so. For me personally, I have developed my own style because of that. I never feel I am on the back foot if an issue arises because I am constantly adapting and working to my environment and actors just like I did as a kid with that bulky camcorder on my shoulder. 2017 has been a hugely exciting year for me. As with previous years, I wanted to step up with the quality of footage and sound to the highest possible level. Each and every project I have developed has it’s own style and genre, but they are all shot to a beautiful standard.
The Doorman Earlier in the year we completed production on ‘The Doorman’, a 45minute espionage drama, which we will pitch primarily as a pilot to a bigger more developed series. It stars Kevin Leslie ‘The Rise of the Krays’ as the principle main character Max. This character lives a very solitary life, is military trained and worked as a doorman at London hotel. The film also stars Nigel Barber ‘recently seen in the latest Mission Impossible film and alongside Daniel Craig in Spectre’. Cheryl Never completes the main cast as Gabrielle Rothchild, a mysterious yet seductive woman who walks into Max’s life and changes it forever. ‘The Doorman’ is very much for me, the perfect project, not only a beautifully written piece ‘Penned by Cheryl Neve’ but also a close collaboration of the DOP ‘Richard Oakes’, the director ‘myself’ and the cast. 109

I am a firm believer in the actors having a say, having a voice. If an actor in a project of mine has an idea for a scene or how it could be developed I am fully open and applaud it. A film will also be stronger if everyone on board feels like it has been developed and explored fully.
with an all-star cast including ‘Nadia Lamin – Human’ who has become the strongest of collaborators with me in recent years, ‘Angela Dixon – Never Let Go’, ‘Andrew Lee Potts – Primeval / Wireless’, ‘Rachel Warren – The Snare’ and Marc Zammit ‘Pandorica / Homeless Ashes’.
I absolutely love to explore genres, whether it be dance, drama, thrillers or comedy, each and every one can have huge merit and short film as tool allows film makers to explore those in the most interesting and bold styles and ways possible.
This is film will divide, shock and amaze an audience, I absolutely hate spoilers… finding out that everyone who found a grizzly end at the red wedding in GOT in the Metro one morning… not a happy memory!’ So I cannot give anything away, except to say you won’t see it coming. The beauty of film is to do just that, to lead an audience on a journey and be able to pull the rug from under them at any moment.
In Flight ‘In Flight’ was filmed in April this year at the stunning plane set location at ‘Black Hangar Studios’, recently used for Star Wars: Rogue One. It was a black comedy, starring and produced by ‘Faith Elizabeth’ alongside ‘Jake Francis’ and ‘Jess Collett’. We managed to bring along around 30 absolutely astoundingly good extras, a wonderful AD in the form of filmmaker Geoff Harmer and much of the same crew from The Doorman. In Flight in terms of a short film is hugely ambitious, to create and shoot a film in a real life plane, to fake an on board flight and to throw in a huge twist into the story. I have been very thankful for the huge success we have earned over the past 5 years with the films produced, many have gone on to win awards all over the globe, to have create a really strong network of actors and fellow filmmakers and to be able to continue to create and develop bigger and bolder projects. As a director starting out, the idea of filming in a 17 storey sky rise building or a full sized passenger jet would have seemed out of reach, but with continued belief in yourself and the support of others, anything is possible.
Chimera The third of the trilogy of films being shot in the first half of the year in ‘Chimera’, a dark twisted psychological thriller 110
Networking Networking Networking For me the absolute corner stone of all film-making is networking. The world became a whole lot smaller with the arrival of social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and this is something that you can learn to control and develop. People talk about the six degrees of separation, maybe we are all connected by those few small steps. I believe it is smaller still. We are able to write, shoot, edit and upload our own trailers and projects with so much ease these days. There is an influx of talent and work appearing online every single second so it is so important to make sure you stand out when and where you can with what you do produce and who that reaches as a wider audience. Building a strong support network is essential, because you will always find the right crew, the best actors and thus the best chance of telling the story in the right way. I am in contact with hundreds of skilled, brilliant actors. If there is one thing I can take away from the past 5 years, is that I have seen first-hand how utterly talented and amazing the British film industry is and how it is constantly growing and adapting.

The Future Marty! As a film director, I know that I cannot sit back on my past success. It has opened doors, it has earned a level of respect and it has proven that hard work, late nights ‘copious amounts of coffee’ and support can receive recognition. But I feel like I am only on the start of my journey. Short films have a massively special place in my heart, but looking over the horizon I see a bigger, more dynamic, if harder to tame animal… The feature. I feel extremely fortunate to have my wife as a writer and a constant rock. We have an absolutely stunning script in place, a dark sci-fi thriller, centring on people and their relationships in the hardest of times. It brings together everything I love about film as it has emotion, drama, sound weapons and a western shoot-out style climax. Watch this space! Beyond that I have a slate of another four shorts we are developing, I continue to be a film judge at festivals and I myself are looking to develop the very first Harrow Film Festival in the near future to discover and celebrate filmmakers in my local area.
Words Of Advice Trust in your ideas and your style. If you are an actor, it is better to bring out more of yourself in a role as ultimately what a director falls in love with will be the person playing that role. Don’t be afraid to jump out your comfort zone. I am not a writer, yet I have written several award winning films, and it was more out of necessity. I had a story I wanted to tell, so I wrote it. If you are an actor and you feel you are not being given the roles you really want to play, try writing it, or finding another to collaborate with. And finally and most importantly, do not be afraid to fail at something. I have had plenty of setbacks, but it makes you stronger to tackle those. In the immortal words of Dory… ‘Keep on Swimming’. 113

Alternative F ashion Week 2018 London Alternative Fashion Week, Equal Awards & The Secret Rainbow Kids. Hosted by Fay Louise Purdham, another successful evening of creative fashion and live music blossomed against all the odds amidst the relentless torrential wind and rain of Storm Diane. The follow up show from the historical and SOLD OUT first ever official London Alternative Fashion Week held in Piccadilly Circus show of 2017 was now held in The Fairway Pavilion on 21st September 2018 at Middlesex Golf Course and the atmosphere was incredible. 120
Gaining more momentum and interest each year this new wave of fashion drew crowds and designers from locally and abroad across all walks of life. Packed with audience members, camera crews, photographers, designers, models, radio stations it was a bustling bounty of diversity. Several Celebrities including Sandi Bogle attended, made speeches and gave out the coveted EQUAL Awards. Special moments saw ‘MakeUp Junkie G’ adorn the runway in her motorised wheelchair. Amazing hair creations from The Pink Octopus Dreadshop made their way from as far as Dublin Ireland to appear. Doris Hermann from Germany had her incredible Jewellery around the necks of many models on the runway. Emerging designer Jess Stengs showcased her lovely swimwear collection ‘LEVEN’. Aleah Leigh of Dragon Lady Productions again astounded people with her creative METAL WARRIOR alternative collection followed up with some beautiful elegant commercial dresses. Mirroring this double-edged style Vlasta Rauerova Havlinova of Rauer Couture showcased a series of absolutely beautiful high-end commercial dresses with a side dressing of some interesting creative alternative pieces, providing the best of both worlds in fashion. This was only but a few of the many attractions and nuances the event had to offer. Body Painter Sharon Gertrude Ball from Manchester, created cool art- works on models. Film producers, actors, actresses we’re everywhere. Instead of the usual deafening rapid-fire dance music belting out of the PA system as they graced the runway the musical backdrop had a more organic and natural vibe with performances from El’tee and James Kennedy. Raw talent oozed out or everywhere nook & cranny.
Everywhere you turned there was something special going on and everyone seemed to be getting something out of it. Many people after the event have said it was the first fashion show they we’re involved in that had no negative drama and everyone was extremely happy at. This in itself is a great achievement, as we all have heard how volatile the fashion industry can be. Spike summers brought a fantastic punk vibe to the fore with his creative T-SHIRTS reminding us all how incredibly fashionable, ground breaking and wildly attractive punk rock with it’s own brand of fashion is and how much it has affected many things in fashion to this day not just clothing, but hairstyles and make up. 122
CHARITIES INVOLVED The event opened with The Secret Rainbow Kids, a children’s help group. Other charities supporting the event we’re animal charity Paws2Resue of which, Ricky Gervais is an active member. Paws2Rescue make the goody bags for these events so be sure to check them out and give them some support and donations. You can find them on Facebook.

Holding tight to both as they struggle to fit into a community that patently doesn’t want them, Ms. Haywood — who shot the film in her hometown and describes it as “Emotionally biographical” — fashions a portrait of mental illness and extreme bullying that can be tough to watch. Deliberately exaggerating every cruelty, she shows how slights are magnified when you’re young or otherwise vulnerable. Backing her up, the cinematographer, Nicola Daley, employs the colours of cartoons to amplify every emotion, overlaying her bright, muscular hues with gauze whenever Iona escapes into dreamy fantasies.” New York Times
For her first feature, “Pin Cushion,” the British director Deborah Haywood digs into her own teenage memories and unearths something eccentric, tragic and utterly unclassifiable. At the center is a relationship of cloying codependency as Iona (Lily Newmark), a pale-faced teenager, and her hunchbacked mother, Lyn (Joanna Scanlan), contentedly share meals, pet names and even a bed.
Recently arrived in a small Midlands town, the two are desperate to make friends. But Lyn, mentally slow and physically burdened, invites only the scorn of her neighbors, while Iona, geeky and ginger-haired, is a too-tempting target for the über-mean girls at her new high school. Brutally exploiting her social and sexual naïveté, they enact a campaign of escalating humiliations. 131

El’Tee is a very talented brand new singer, rapper and musical artist to hit the scene. His style is incomparable, undeniable and unique! Having made appearances on X Factor it was easy to recognise there was a spark of magic about this young man. Born in the cultural melting pot of Hackney, East London and brought up listening to his father’s love of soul music it was soon very clear that El’tee was about to start his self-awakening journey into the music industry at a young age. Music and singing ran through his blood, with dad Tony, himself a successful artist in the 90’s, being a major influence and reason for El’tee picking up a mic. He was introduced to professional recording at the tender age of 13. Self-taught (with a little help from dad!) by listening to vocalists like Chris Brown, Frank Ocean and various underground American artists in the Rap scene, El’tee has developed his unique style of singing and rapping combined.

Abe Cruz (Abraham J. Cruz) is the visionary founder and CEO of Forever Faith LLC, which is a universal message and mindset. Abe considers himself an entrepreneur and an overall survivor. Abe grew up a dedicated athlete inspired by, and addicted to health, fitness and sports. He has always believed that any goal is attainable when you commit and truly have Faith. By understanding the mindset of a champion it is easy to see why Abe decided to create an inspirational and motivational clothing line to move this world. Forever Faith now offers a Fitness & Fashion line that Abe designed while serving a prison term of 3 1/2 years in an Oklahoma prison. Like many in this world, he found himself facing financial challenges and daily expenses for his Mother and family. Abe made the worst decision of his life that has now become the biggest blessing of his life.
goals as student athletes. He has been invited to give his testimony to many groups of young people of all ages, and shares his story in a major segment of a documentary film, ‘Fashion and Culture in Los Angeles’ to be released in 2014. Abe’s most recent philanthropic venture was sponsorship of a youth basketball camp in Tulsa where Forever Faith provided camp tee shirts and wristbands, and Abe was a featured speaker. As a result of this venture Forever Faith has partnered with the KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) School in Tulsa Oklahoma to supply school uniforms along with athletic uniforms all with the Forever Faith logo.
He realizes that there are many on the edge of desperate survival in the world today and came up with his clothing line as a way to communicate his story and to inspire others to succeed the right way through Faith. He calls it a ‘business plan in prison’, which he designed on prison napkins with crayons, turning his negative situation into a positive solution. “I made a huge mistake in my life and I am determined to turn this tragedy into a success in order to save people from making the same mistakes I did”, Abe says. While in prison, Abe started his mission of Inspiration & Motivation with his fellow inmates teaching selfdevelopment classes with a faith-based message inspired by top motivational speakers like Jim Rohn and John C. Maxwell. Abe took a leadership role assisting his fellow inmates with their lives physically and spiritually. His message and company slogan that Abe came up with in prison is, “If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will.” Forever Faith’s tag line is “Just Believe,” which is inspiring people all over the world. Abe believes that his life was saved by Faith and fitness, that’s what inspired the Double F’s. He works tirelessly speaking out to young athletes and youth programs to encourage them to get education and stick to their
Abe is blessed and grateful for his success, and knows that his mission is to inspire others through “Forever Faith,” the Lifestyle Brand. 135

Des Edwards is an English actor living in Belfast striving to further his career in front of the camera. Des has had the privilege of featuring on some quite impressive sets. HBO’s Game of Thrones, both Line of Duty, The Fall for the BBC and Syfy Channel’s KRYPTON. His latest venture was a short scene he shot with the intention of portraying a scene taken from Vikings. The distraught Ragnar has just buried his friend and is having a moment at his grave, a rather short monologue but interesting in its own right. 138
With costume and makeup in the form of a temporary tattoo drawn on his freshly shaven head Des made his way down to a tranquil spot just outside Killyleagh in Northern Ireland. The whole shoot only took about 90 minutes with a two-camera setup and a few takes purely for different camera angles but on the whole it all came out quite well. Des would like to thank Matt McMaster for being his cameraman for the morning and Zara Braiden for patiently applying the temporary tattoo. Des hopes to move on to more contemporary roles in the not too distant future with more auditions.

The film seeks to raise awareness about problem gambling, an issue in society that he’d never given much thought to before but started to research after he read the script. CHARITY
Every Life Counts
K-9 Angels So much has happened in the last 5 and half years it’s sometimes hard to keep up. In that time we have built a state of the art shelter from scratch ‘the K-9 Angels / Betalands shelter, we have re homed over 850 dogs taking them from hell & placing them in heavenly homes, we have spayed & neutered over 3,500 dogs & some cats too, this is the most humane & effective way to significantly cut down the stray dog problem & prevent suffering to millions of puppies, embarked on a school education tour to teach the importance of pet care & we raised close to half a 160
million pounds, we are still slowly building a solid team & this is all from a tiny team of volunteers who all have jobs & lead busy lives. K-9 Angels is high profile charity solely run by volunteers that have had huge celebrity support, which in its self can be misleading as we always desperately need funds. (Dog rescue is a never-ending cycle of Dogs needing help).
We have built a tiny team that consists of our patron the amazing Sue Barker OBE who also adopted her dog from us named Baiatu aka Batty. Six trustees consisting of Pola & I who are the two remaining founders, (Anneka left the charity in 2014), Sue Williams (head of finance), Rebecca Smith (head of re homing) Judy Munford (Facebook page manager & Head of Education) Fergus (finance & foster), Karin Ridgers (PR), Federica Monsone (Twitter manager). Then there’s the incredible Angels who work tirelessly in the front line of dog rescue every single day, Aurelia who runs the shelter we share & Madalina. Both of these ladies are heroes in my eyes & I’m proud to know them. So far along the way we have had some incredible celebrity support. You may remember when Pudsey’s & Ashley won Britain’s got talent back in 2012 Simon Cowell gave a huge shout out to our charity, Simon said look up K-9 Angels as they are helping dogs from the meat dog trade, support K-9 Angels. This shout out made our website crash as we had so much response. We are eternally grateful for the shout out to millions of viewers. Ricky Gervais also helped us hugely when he re-tweeted about the plight of the Odai dogs, at that point we had raised £4,000 but after Ricky Gervais just re-tweeted once we had raised £33,000! Enough to feed 680 Dogs for a year, and provide shelter help plus provide many other things needed for the shelter. Four years ago we started our mass spay & neuter campaign. We realised that if we actually want to significantly reduce the stray dog problem & end their suffering we must sterilise as many as possible. Each year I personally take on a charity challenge to help raise the funds for the campaign. This year I wing walked on a plane that was speeding up to 150MPH, last year I climbed Africa’s tallest mountain Kilimanjaro & 2 previous years I cycled 500 & 300 miles. 161
WORLDEQUAL.COM
Spay and neuter is a huge passion of mine & I’ll continue to take on crazy yearly challenges to help raise the funds. If one bitch is left un-spayed her offspring can produce up to 67,000 puppies within 6 years! This is why spay and neuter is so very, very important. Please Sponsor here – http://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserPage. action?userUrl=VictoriaEisermann&pageUrl=7 To adopt a K-9 Angels Dog just look on our K-9 Facebook page or website www.k-9angels.org to see dogs available for adoption. We desperately want to build our team of volunteers but that isn’t easy. We all do 4 or more jobs to keep this charity running. It’s a non-stop cycle of accounts, meetings, re homing, social media, re homing, trip to Romania, updates, admin, appearances, celebrity aliasing the list goes on & on.
Our motto is ‘Every Life Counts’. Please visit our site www.k-9angels.org and our Facebook page. We always need donations & are currently in need of dedicated volunteers. All of the funds that is raised by K-9 Angels go directly to help Dogs in desperate need.

in dog rescue
The public shelters in Romania are horrific, the dogs are kept (in most of the cases) in terrible conditions and most of them will die without knowing what love feels like. The government policy is to capture all dogs on the streets, even if the dog is owned and has slipped out of the yard to play – which is common. The dogs are cruelly and sickeningly dragged on dog-catcher poles, thrown into vans and taken to the public shelter. The dog is lucky if the cage is cleaned, or if they receive food – because after 14 days, the law says that they are slaughtered – often inhumanely injected with poison or antifreeze. I breathe in deeply and walk inside, my heart already broken into a million tiny pieces that will never be put back together. I look up and see so many innocent souls suffering, their tails wagging whilst barking in fear. It makes me feel weak, weak because so many eyes are pleading, so many animals are suffering. I am guilty for feeling weak, because I can only take one dog today. And then I saw him… a medium size old boy, barking his loudest along with the rest, and wagging his tail to greet me as I walked closer. His pleading eyes took the choice away from me that day, and I knew it would be him that will be free. His body was so thickly matted with fur, dried faeces, full of fleas, ticks and dead bugs – a piteous and heart-breaking sight. At the vet, he was shaved, bathed, checked over, tested, fed, watered and we played and cuddled for hours. I named him Harvey. He will stay at the vet for a few weeks to make sure that none of the diseases virulent in the public shelter are in him too. He will then be vaccinated, and will go to stay in our homestead in our foster carer’s garden whilst he waits for an adopter, a forever family to call him home.
Have you ever felt afraid of going to an animal shelter to see dogs? I am sure that in most cases, the answer is no. Every month in Romania, as I drive up to the gates, it is the stench that hits me first: a mixture of rot, faeces, and fear.
At night, I toss and turn, the eyes of the ones that I could not save will always be in my mind, along with hundreds of thousands of others who I have left behind in public shelters over the last five years. I will always feel guilty for leaving them there, and my heart will always be broken for them.
My hearts literally sinks to my stomach, and I feel sick as I step out of my car and the noise hits me: the noise of hundreds of dogs barking, howling, crying screaming – and every one trapped in a tiny cage – everyone on death row.
Harvey is just one of hundreds of reasons why Paws2Rescue exist. Our team in the UK and Romania save lives like his, every single day. Our Paws2Rescue education programme is in schools in 7 of 42 counties
164
and we are working to expand this. We represent UK rescues in Romania and are involved in local government talks and strategies to make change to the animal protection laws which are never applied, to policy that means a death sentence for most dogs. We work in small communities across the country, with children, with orphans and with deprived families. And we neuter. Thousands of dogs, and cats, through our programmes across the whole country. Please support our work, we are the most passionate and dedicated team of volunteers, saving thousands of lives. We will always be the voice for the voiceless.

Blanche I am disability model who has gained so much in selfconfidence since first modelling at London Alternative Fashion Week in 2017 and other events since then, that when I was asked to be ‘Miss November’ by a friend I could not say “No”. When a friend’s husband died of a brain tumour after a battle over several years my friend Fon (A sculptor and chef) decided to do something to make a difference. She produced a calendar full of women from all walks of life showing that beauty comes from within, not necessarily from the clothes we wear (or not in this case) this tastefully shot calendar if full of thought-provoking high-quality images from Ivan Schmidt. 166
The Brain Tumour Charity works to highlight the complexities of brain tumours, pioneering research and supporting families with a member with a brain tumour. Sadly, they do not receive the same funding as main cancer charities.
D id you know?
• Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 • Over 500 children and teenagers are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year.
