A New Wave

It’s 2018 and the world is tilting it’s axis towards a more greener and equal sense of wellbeing everyday. It fills me with great pride that Equal Magazine is surfing on the crest of this new wave but maybe it is not a new wave at all, maybe it is in fact a helpful hand that has returned from an older more balanced way of life almost forgotten, once brushed aside by the rapid flow of a fast growing modernised world racing ahead of itself without thinking or looking more carefully first.

In 2018 we are already hearing on the radio and TV news that in parts of the UK there has been a return of the re usable glass milk bottle instead of the regurgitating endless plastic bottle, which is in itself re usable too but for some strange reason mostly used once then thrown away to choke our oceans, country sides, cities and our wildlife.

We have more emphasis on recycling, solar powered energy, windmills are back in again, biodegradable bags are beginning to replace the scourge of the plastic bag epidemic and they even say the hole in the OZONE is healing, lets hope we can save a few rare species of animal too like the rhino, elephant, snow leopard and our native bee to name a few. It’s slowly turning but the wheels are in motion and they know exactly what road they have to travel. Let’s keep those wheels in motion and lets encourage them to speed up a little.

In this issue we see recycled fashion with Belfast designer Titanic Denim and London designer Aleah Leigh of Dragon Lady Productions who is a master of recycled fashion art, businesses such as Jeeva Natural, the organic coconut water energy drink are there to quench your thirst after a nourishing look and read. May the future be brighter, may the future be better, may the future be a world more equal.

Blades and Beauty

Situated in the Antrim Business Park beside the Junction Outlet, Blades and Beauty has, went from strength to strength since opening its doors.

With my team of hand- picked experts, my salon covers everything all hair, make-up, beauty and tanning needs. We are now also a teaching salon for Airbase, who very kindly sponsor Blades and Beauty with their high-end product, this is used on each creative piece of body art and some editorial work we have created. 10

Due to an injury I could no longer fulfil my job role in the mental health sector, leading to my career change. Having grown watching my mother run her own successful hair dressing salon and having a love of art and fashion, I would never have thought that life would have lead me back to this industry. In 2015 I wrote a five-year business plan including goals which I set out to achieve. It has been an unbelievable experience and my expectations have been surpassed.

“...i have a wonderful team working for me, with so much support and amazing feedback...”

I have a wonderful team working for me, with so much support and amazing feedback the salon receives from our customers. My team and business has so much support also from individuals in the PR/Fashion industry, all of this I am truly thankful for.

Special thanks to Equal for their ongoing and continued support with regards to my business and also Blades and Beauty creative concepts that are used to help empower others and give a message of strength, hope and positivity to all. 12

Tammy Bringloe and Stand Out With Me

Tammy Bringloe is the founder of Stand Out With Me. Stand Out With Me is an online boutique collaborating with a mixture of designers, selling male and female clothing and jewellery.

The idea behind the brand is to provide a more realistic approach to online shopping and an easier way of shopping online, therefore boosting body confidence. If a customer clicks on a specific size of clothing, the model will be that size.

The website will include a continuous selection of black dresses for all shapes and sizes, therefore, steering away from the 'little black dress' concept, which has resulted in fuelling insecurities

16

and many people to crash diet etc. Tammy’s aim through Stand Out With Me is to dress not just someone's size but also their shape.

There will be blogs on relevant topics and a section on how to work out what shape you are and how to dress it. Also what you'll see throughout the brand is the addition of the comedy factor to it to ensure it really does Stand Out. For those that know Tammy they will see her humour reflected in the casual wear and the actual clothing labels.

Oui Rebel Mary GiNNiFEr Stylist

Mary Ginnifer is a Creative Director, Stylist, Artist and Designer from Cork. She has a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art and Design from the Crawford College of Art And Design Cork and has been working as a Stylist and Creative Director for the past five years.

Styling and directing fashion editorials for such prestigious fashion publications as The Irish Times, Life, Style Magazine, Institute Magazine and Flawless Magazine to name but a few. It is her creative concepts and ability to create captivating and often dark-romantic, otherworldly fashion stories through her styling, production design and creative direction, that make Mary's conceptual work stand out from the rest and capture the attention of influential Fashion Editors such as Deirdre McQuillan of The Irish Times, who has written many feature articles on Mary describing her as a 'Stylist who turns the ordinary into the extraordinary' and has published several of her creative shoots. Mary's roles are wide and varied from Director, Producer, Creative Director, Production Designer to Stylist and often Fashion Designer and MUA. She lives and breathes creativity and is hot demand from not only Fashion Photographers and the fashion industry but also is regularly called upon by Singers, Hair Salon Directors and Film Makers to bring her creative touch to their creative projects.

Mary says she draws inspiration from so many things but in particular fine art, film, theatre, music and philosophy influence her creative thought process hugely. She also credits her late

18

mother as being a huge inspiration to her, with happy memories of her mum telling her own enchanting fairy tales and making beautiful costumes for herself and her sisters for school plays and Halloween fuelling her creative passion.

In her childhood her father also encouraged her love for drawing nature, which has also greatly informed Mary's work. Her styling approach is often avant-garde peppered with contemporary touches and it is her attention to detail that leaves people in awe and comparing her creations to the work of Tim Walker and Alexander McQueen, much to her delight. The featured shoot entitled 'Oui Rebel!' supports these statements where old world decadence and Parisian charm meet in a most creative and fantastical way....

“Drawing on my varied influences from both the fine art and haute couture worlds and my passion for antiques and vintage, I conceived of the concept, marrying old world decadence and a youthful angst, aptly titled 'Oui Rebel!'. Referencing Delacroix's charged 'Liberty Leading the People' and Westwood's statement punk oeuvre, I playfully merged vintage and contemporary pieces creating painterly and fresh scenes. Whimsical touches set theatrically against the emotive and large scale canvases of Irish artist Tony O' Connor, speak to my romantic sensibilities”.

Cutting-edge couture was bountifully represented with such high-end Cork based boutiques as Samui, Olori, Monreal, Marc

...her attention to detail leaves people in awe... Cain, Salingers and Irish designers such as Valecia and Elaine Honey contributing, as well as my favourite go-to vintage havens; Mercury Goes Retrograde and The Retro Workshop Cork nationally and Gladrags Vintage stateside! Furthermore Topman's youthful and street style was featured along with that of MacCarthy's Ltd.

Tongue-in-cheek military accents were provided by Medalika Designs, all the way from Lithuania and of course myself creating bespoke millinery, adding my own quirky touches. Beautifully crafted handbags that compliment the story came from Kent Stetson of Rhode Island, U.S.A. My fabulous team of creative colleagues consisted of: Director, Producer, Creative Director, Stylist: Mary Ginnifer

London alternative Fashion Week

Following on from Shelley Rodgers successful and highly acclaimed inaugural Belfast Alternative Fashion Week in 2016 this second instillation of the creative & alternative fashion phenomenon unfurled it’s embracive arms towards the heart of London to Piccadilly Circus and was well received with a sold out debut show. Not only did it draw the crowd but like the Belfast show it was an historic and watershed moment, in particular for many creative artists, fashion designers, purists and likeminded folk.

London has long been very well know around the world as an increasingly multi cultural city with a wonderful tolerance and respect towards diversity and inclusivity and this is why it makes it all the more compatible for EQUAL EVENTS to have taken it’s alternative fashion show from Ireland to England. 34

All this would have been much more difficult to achieve had it not been for the integral help and organisation of one local Londoner, Creative Director & Designer Aleah Leigh of DragonLady Productions. Together Shelley and Aleah pulled the rabbit out of the hat. Aleah showcased her designs on the runway at the 2016 show in Belfast making a huge impression with Shelley both on and off the work place thus establishing the wonderful bond that built the bridge to better days subsequently navigating Shelley to an historic sold out debut show. In the heart of one of the most famous cities in the world Shelley said “ it was an unforgettable experience and intensely moving ”. The alternative landscape is densely rich with creative artistic nutrients. Diversity is what keeps everything on an even or

equal keel. The best way for me to describe the show is by comparing it to the enigmatic spectacle of “The Great Barrier Reef”. Not only does the reef combine colourful and sculptural visual aesthetic magnificence through its diversity of species, it functions also as a balanced, relatively harmonious ecosystem because of its diversity. It’s preservation and future depends on the equilibrium that thriving diversity creates. Being equal does not necessarily mean you have to be the same as each other and it is with this mirrored environment that people from many different backgrounds, shapes and sizes, colours and creeds, designers with both commercial and creatively alternative orientations are able to celebrate their talents in a relatively harmoniously friendly yet competitive manner where respect for ones neighbouring talent is given, understood and appreciated.

This “Great Alternative Reef” if you like is both hugely magnetic and inspirational on many levels.

Other celebrity attendees were Celebrity big brother winner and MMA Alex Reid, Big Brothers Karen Chamberlan, X Factor and ‘Love is The Only Law’ singer Amrick Channa, body artists, Michael Jackson dancers, Comedian Tom Ward all intermingled throughout the day performing in the lead up to a mind blowing display of creative fashion and design. Goody bags we’re provided by sponsors Paws 2 Rescue of which Ricky Gervais is an active celebrity patron alongside K9 Angels dog charity who attended. Sponsors Jeeva Natural makers of King Coconut Water supplied their delicious organic energy drink, they have beaten over 70 people to get their organic product into a unit at Harrods.

As a musician I related it to what I imagined it felt like when Woodstock was happening, or when Glastonbury began, when Rock and Roll or the Punk Scene broke. A very special ‘thing’ was happening and I felt electrified to be there, it still feels amazing to say ‘I was there’.

The journey has only just begun and we look forward to the future. Underground over ground alternatives free, life is for living let’s live and let be. Winners of the Equal Awards

Newryalternative Fashion Week

Newry City was host to their first alternative fashion show held in the stunning Millers Suite at Canal Court Hotel & Spa.

After a year of eventing the alternative fashion week has been spread out over the country and abroad, with 5 shows in total, three launching the week of creative designs in November & December of 2016 in major venues across Belfast followed by the historical sold out debut Alternative show in the heart of London September 2017 at Piccadilly Circus and finally, the last of the years alternative shows in Newry on Halloween night proved a successful year of eventing in all.

With a large influx of London designers, models and actors travelling over to attend and participate in the Newry event the atmosphere was blissful. To have had local make up artists and models mix and mingle with London celebrities was a proud moment for the organisers and added heightened elation for the audience and everyone locally involved.

The show opened with a captivating performance from Irish singer and harpist Brona McVittie who performed hypnotic and enchanting original songs on her large harp then followed by an appearance from rising magician star JSPADES the music and magic proved an intoxicating and mesmerising starter for the evening of creative and out of the box alternative fashion

46

that followed. Local Belfast designer Titanic Denim, London Designer Aleah Leigh, Amsterdam Designer LesTere Actors such as George Newton made several appearances on the runway, singer and TV performer Amrick Channa finished the night off with a euphoric rendition of bumper dance songs pulling the crowds up onto the runway to dance with the models putting a smile on everyone’s face before they made their way home.

This was the beginning of many more Newry Fashion shows that are to come in the future with the first “Newry Fashion Week in Canal Court on October 2018”. With multi million pounds of major investment being pumped into Newry City the future and timing seems to be aligning itself perfectly for a fantastic run of fashion shows. Newry’s location is in the centre of a fashion love triangle London, Belfast and Dublin, making it a prime location and easy to get to for global travellers. Being held in Canal Courts hotel and spa in the Millers Suite their best function room, with a bus station right beside it and free parking, special offers on rooms for people coming to it’s shows it has a very bright future in front of it indeed.

Newry Pride was an amazing experience for everyone in the city. The positive festival atmosphere was intoxicating and you knew that a great time was going to be had by all from the moment you arrived in Newry as first impressions were breath taking. The effort that went into decorating the city was not only extremely impressive but a sure sign of strength and support that would warn off any prospective problems or homophobic attacks that some people feared would happen.

they walked passed by, there were flags, hats and friendship bracelets being sold on every corner, candy floss, parades and demonstrations of support, a huge concert stage where local singer songwriters performed to a very impressive high standard, market stalls, the list goes on and more importantly not once did we see or hear of any unsavoury incidents or acts of aggression.

all the way up past Canal Court Hotel and Spa and further, it truly was a site to behold upon entering Newry especially from the southern side. With the sun blazing down and not a cloud in sight it looked like we were driving into some long established popular European carnival, it felt like a completely different city and the good vibes were clearly happening as children and families all had smiles on their faces everywhere you looked. The carnival characters on stilts would speak to the crowd as

Newry Pride is a superb festival and a very good family friendly event too, with superb live music entertainment throughout to usher on the outstanding parades you would not want to miss this all round stellar event.

Hundreds of huge rainbow flags were blowing perfectly in a gentle summer breeze on top of every lampost that towered over us along the full length of the beautiful canal system that runs parallel with Buttercrane shopping centre.

With a heavy police presence this definately helped deter any potential unwelcome disturbances. I even managed to get my photo taken with the police just to prove to everyone that they were there to help serve and protect the festivald community and not intimidate it. They were very obliging too.

Peter revel-Walsh Model & actor

Peter Revel-Walsh originally from Lancashire is an actor, model, voice over artist and audio book narrator, a creative in many ways who will throw myself in wholeheartedly to every single project that he is involved with.

...he has performed as William Shakespeare at the Edinburgh Fringe... Peter has been a full time creative since 2014 but has been acting and performing for over 25 years in various forms. Having been trained how to access emotions from a physiological direction rather than an emotional memory perspective has helped Peter greatly in both his acting and modeling as the emotion can be picked up by the camera from both mediums.

Peter enjoys playing character parts and has performed as William Shakespeare at the Edinburgh Fringe, played a spacecraft gunner in the film “The Drift” and been the main character in Hunter and The Bear’s video for “Nickajack” among many other things. He has been the voice of God, The Grim Reaper as well as 6 audio books currently available on Amazon.

Always looking for new ventures Peter is currently working on producing his own web-series called “Down The Ellie” on Youtube.

Hannah Jackson the Room Reader

“There’s much more to owning a space than making it look nice. it’s about taking charge of your life.” Room Reading is arguably one of the more intriguing applications of both intuition and psychological awareness to have emerged from London, where Hannah Jackson is the creator and at the forefront of the practice.

Hannah is able to attune to a client’s state of mind by visiting their home and observing the relationship between their furniture, furnishings, ornaments and the space itself. Then, by working with these elements, she helps her clients to tackle personal issues that affect their lives.

“People ask me whether what I do is feng shui or life coaching, others wonder if I’m simply making some interior design changes to create a quick mood boost, but there’s more to it than that,” says Hannah, who having had an instinct for it as a child has been Room Reading professionally for 10 years. “There’s much more to owning a space than making it look nice. It’s about taking charge of your life.”

71

...she felt it was a skill that could be learnt. room reading is evidence based... The list of residents of rooms she’s read includes some famous names. “I went into Princess Diana’s drawing room. It was heavy and foreboding. I sensed this in all the paintings and furniture.”

Soon Hannah was advising the Sainsbury family and ambassadors in their private homes. But it was after reading a room in a shanty house in Mauritius that she determined to make her gift more widely available; and she felt it was a skill that could be learnt. Room Reading is evidence-based.

Room Reader contains the full stories of a wide range of Hannah’s clients. She deals with addictions, post-natal depression, loss, impotence, body issues, a dog-lover gone too far, and those stuck in a past or future time; she analyses Kim Kardashian’s night terror, the late Steve Jobs’ empty mansions, Elton’s parenting, and the religious iconography supporting white supremacy in black homes.

What does your room say about you? Reading this book, you may well discover the answer as you make your space move your mind.

Room Reader can be purchased on Amazon from December 10th 2017.

With local designer TiTaNiC dENiM taking centre road/stage the stars began to dazzle in the twilight sky After a sold out London Alternative Fashion Week on the previous night the Equal Events ring leader Miss Shelley Rodgers flew in from London to prepare for her EQUAL URBAN Catwalk at the Holywood Culture night for it’s second year running and the crowds once again flocked all around it like moths to a flame for the fun filled street wear on display. With local designer Titanic Denim taking centre road/stage the stars began to dazzle in the twilight sky. Just as darkness stepped in suddenly the new LED Street lights automatically turned themselves on and brightly lit the entire roadway runway up to a gasping audience.

The timing couldn’t have been better, it was as if the streetlights were alive and enjoying the spectacle of urban fashion 76

themselves. It was a total spotlight moment adding much more to the anticipation and hype.

This wonderful family event included a children’s line of clothing. As DJ Kieran Sherry boomed out the distinctive Equal Events soundtrack written by Aedan Sherry you could see the whole crowd dancing in unison as the models rhythmically grooved to the beat in their very cool recycled Titanic Denim eco fashion street wear. With rapturous applause and smiling faces everywhere before you knew it the curtains of darkness closed over to eclipse the event for another year. Roll on 2018 for the next Equal Urban Catwalk. Who will the next designer be under those curious streetlights? We all can’t wait to see.

Clare-Louise

“...personal development is the single most powerful tool to create change in all areas of our lives...” My passion is to inspire creative empowerment through the journey of personal development, self-discovery and creative mastery in your art, your business and your life. I'm as equally passionate about learning as I am about sharing knowledge, experiences and philosophy to help shape a positive environment for creatives to thrive.

I've been that start up business and grown it, I've navigated other small businesses and a global organisation back from the brink, I've burnt out, felt the stress, learnt the lessons and left behind me strong foundations for others to flourish from. I understand the challenges and frustrations most creative entrepreneurs, small businesses and organisations face, enabling me to help guide you to create your solutions. I am experienced in moving through the transition of 'stuck' to fulfilment - reaching that all- important full potential. I'm 88

committed to the journey it takes to bring calm to chaos and facilitate positive change ... one step at a time.

I'm a creative thinker, a fine art photographer, stylist, art director, inspirational speaker, photographic competitions judge, mentor and qualifications examiner, I've won awards, gained qualifications, I have travelled the world because of my creativity and exploring it.

Both my artwork and creative writings have been published online and in print globally. I love nothing more than to share and facilitate inspirational and motivational workshops to help others embrace developmental change, uncover creativity, and unlock the potential within. clare-louise.com

Sherie BEazLEy Photography

Six years ago, Sherie's career was in banking and occasionally she would take landscape pictures whilst out walking her dog. Back then, if some-one had of told her she would be a published portrait and fashion photographer, she would have laughed uncontrollably.

Nevertheless, based on positive feedback Sherie took the bull by the horns, quit her job and decided to study a Degree in Commercial Photography at RGU Aberdeen. This was a jaw-dropping, fabulous experience which opened her eyes and influences. Everyday Sherie strives to learn more and share the knowledge with fellow photographers. “Nothing is impossible, Everything is achievable – Just believe.”

Brona McVittie We Are the Wildlife

The forthcoming debut solo LP from celebrated Irish folk chanteuse and harpist Brona McVittie is a psychogeographic journey through a collection of traditional folk ballads and original compositions inspired as much by the geometries of London’s urban fringes as by the sonic phenomena within the great rural landscapes of Mourne.

This mixing of traditional songs with her own compositions, and thematic ties between songs old and new, coupled with the use of traditional instruments (harp/flute/strings, etc.) against subtle electronic backdrops all adds up to a record that is heartfelt, timeless and yet pleasingly contemporary in feel, a perfect mix of new and old.

The title track was seeded from the “electric trees” (pylons) of the Lea Valley, and embodies the philosophy that humans along with their infrastructure are as much a part of nature as spiders and webs. Under the Pines arose from the reverberation of (dogs) barking off the trees on the edge of Rostrevor’s pine 110

forest. McVittie’s inspiration draws deeply from Irish folklore – she borrows several of her song titles from W.B. Yeats. The lesser-heard traditional County Down love ballads The Flower of Magherally and Newry Mountain are thematically and geographically balanced against the tragicomic Molly Brannigan (after the singing of flute-player and Sligo farmer, Colm O’Donnell) and death ballad The Jug of Punch (after Joe Heaney’s The Road from Connemara). “Nature reverberates wonderfully in an alchemy of traditional and contemporary instrumentation, making for an exquisite listen from this post-folk electronic chanteuse” Across the Line, BBC Radio Ulster We Are the Wildlife is out 19th January 2018 on her own label Company of Corkbots

Caolan McCLaFFErTy

Caolan McClafferty is an Irish born and bred actor and model making a name for himself in British film and TV. After leaving his native city and traveling England, eventually getting to London, he began his passion as a television and film actor and model. He has modeled on the catwalk and in editorial, high fashion and commercial and for leading brands American Eagle and ASOS and has his first feature film releases this year.

After residing in Liverpool, Wrexham and Birmingham, Caolan finally reached "The Big Smoke" and lived up to his leaving words "I'm going to be on TV" appearing on "The Alan Titchmarsh Show" after just 7 days in the city. Whilst exploring the world of acting, Caolan thought he would give it a stab becoming a model, however, he was turned down by the agency, which told him "I'm sorry you just don't have the look, nor what it takes to become a model Caolan". Determination grew to prove this agency wrong and within four months he was modelling high-end fashion for well-known brands. After being picked up as a catwalk model by Portuguese fashion designer Cruz Bueno and performing mutiple shows, Caolan made his first appearance at London Fashion week in 2015 walking in Réka Orosz's nature collection. He was then scouted by Romanian bespoke menswear designer Florin Dobre, who brought him into London Collections: Men and has featured him in every London show ever since; making appearances in British Vogue and British GQ.Caolan's career as a catwalk model travelled at light speed and he has made an abundance of appearances with major names at London Fashion Week, London Collections: Men, African Fashion Week, Belfast Alternative Fashion Week and performed for various major Charities such as Cancer Research, Macmillan and Mermaids.

Introducing Leigh Hutchinson

2017 is drawing to a climax and what a fast paced year of opportunities and exciting experiences it has been for me as a full time model. Modelling has over the years has become my world and the platform for me to encourage, inspire and be a role model for people all over the world.

With a world that still has prejudices on looks, background, aspirations and individuality it can be hard to stand up for what you believe in and beautiful individuals struggle to express and shine on their own two feet because of this. Most the time it’s a few close-minded people standing in their way to success but once they are given a chance to rise above those few the world can open up to endless possibilities. On my journey as a model, I have met such people and every-time I have been inspired by their success stories.

When I found out about London Alternative Fashion Week (LAFW) I couldn’t help but get excited and shout YES!. As a model who has seen both the beautiful and ugly side of the fashion industry I can truly say the excitement of finding out about this show was immense as this was one I couldn’t miss or not be a part of. I have competed and entered The Alternative Model of the Year competition four years in a row because I believe in their method statement and want for change so couldn’t help but pray this new LAFW held the same heart, resolve and powerful encouragement that this ever changing 21’st century world needed.

The problem we have is breaking out of this 2 dimensional old box of elitism and demand for ultra thin Paris size zero models;

132

this way of thinking for many years has held change back and held back true creativity. “For what artist can create a master piece if they are working with a tiny canvas?”

LAFW offered a refreshing, exciting and open creative show that allowed talented individuals to come together and stand in a positive environment of splendour. Designers brought bold colours, inspiring stories and pure emotion onto the runway with their garments and collections. It was so moving to be able to wear their designs and be told how that collection was born and brought together.

No Bullying, no Limitation when it came to who could get involved and see the show, everyone supported everyone and there was no single token black girl stood alone on the runway as LAFW gave heritages from all across the globe the opportunity to get involved.

It was an amazing show to be a part of and I was so happy and overwhelmed to win the EQUAL - Top online female model of the year 2017 award. Entering any competition can be scary, especially one which involves asking for help and support from friends and family but for me the win spoke volumes and helped reaffirm my belief that it is the company we keep that helps us to grow and achieve our dreams and that together we can bring about change and London Alternative Fashion Week (LAFW) was just that.

Karen Archibald loves travelling, exploring new and exciting countries while working her way through a long bucket list of adventures.

Modelling had never been something she would usually considered until approached by a photographer. At first Karen thought it was a joke, however she decided to give it a try, after all, it was something new to experience. That was 3 1/2 years ago, and she tells Equal “I love it, I've not only been fortunate enough to work with some truly creative people and participate in amazing catwalk shows but I'm now head trainer at AAIMS modelling school in Scotland, and mentor a junior model.

I would say that the greatest modelling moments of 2017 are getting a front cover publication and winning the EQUAL Top Female Model award. I'm really looking forward to seeing what new and exciting opportunities, 2018 has in store for me.

BUSINESS 138

Gary Grant In the early 80's, my dad opened a video store in Dagenham in Essex, I earned my pocket money by doing odd jobs around the store every Saturday morning. It was then when I became a film fanatic and later found out that Hollywood film legend Dudley Moore once lived in our street.

I used to invite my friends to our house every Friday after school to watch the latest films, our house was like the local cinema and it drove my mum mad.

Growing up I was a keen footballer and Sundays were match days. Parsloes Park in Dagenham was my teams, the very same pitches that legends Jimmy Greaves and Booby Moore once graced.

It was in my late 30's that I became a football academy scout, recommended by a former team mate. I quickly formed a partnership with another scout Gary Nott with us spotting the early talents of current Spurs and England star Harry Kane, as well as Benik Afobe and Chuks Aneke.

139

Often I would met first team players and I began collecting autographs, Little did I know this was just the beginning of my present memorabilia company 'Starstruck Autographs Ltd'. My work has brought me into contact with many celebrities and in 2014 I auditioned for a role in a low budget film and landed the part.

2018 is set to be a busy year with two more projects on the way, writing a comedy sitcom with Steve as well as starring in James Crow's latest feature 'Last Village on The Right. Hard work and fortunate opportunities helped me achieve so much and has put me in good stead for the future

2016 and 2017 I landed two more speaking roles in films 'The Magic Pills of Petts Wood' (Directed by Steve Truby) and 'A Nightmare on 34th Street' (Directed by James Crow).

Mr Essex

With a rags to riches story like no other, now becoming a countywide treasure Glenn Tamplin is well and truly Mr Essex.

The multi-millionaire Billericay Town FC owner has gone from strength to strength as he has led a campaign in philanthropy like no other whilst becoming quite the showbiz icon with frequent appearances in the national press.

A year of success has seen Tamplin being named the SECOND most powerful person in Essex in the Essex Power 100 list, leaving just Lord Sugar to stop him from clinching the top spot whilst a Pride Of Essex nod followed following his heart-felt story of how he donated £45,000 to help young Harry Parker walk – the real icing on the cake which was quite recent was perhaps the Essex Entrepreneur Of The Year Award that Tamplin recently won for his business efforts. 142

Now when you are Mr Essex, there is nothing routine about how you get down to business. Tamplin who calls an £18million Abridge abode home, has wasted no time turning Billericay Town into one of the most talked about Non-League outfit.

Off the pitch scores of charities, local community groups and businesses have benefitted and been at the receiving end of Tamplin’s good will at fortune, the Essex tycoon who wears his heart on his sleeve has truly had a year to remember. We at Equal Magazine can’t wait to see what the year 2018 will hold for a truly unique visionary!

NR EXOTICS started with Richard & Nick in 2014 after they saw the level of abandoned, mistreated and incorrectly cared for reptiles and exotics.

The Primary mission of the Sanctuary is EDUCATION, housing animals in need and giving them a loving forever home. The sanctuary currently houses over 400 animals and has a number of "Safe houses" throughout the UK where animals can go from those areas.

The aim is to set up a network of sanctuaries under the NR EXOTICS umbrella to help with education, medical care and housing of these incredible animals. Sadly there a number of "Rescues" out there that don't seek medical treatment for sick or injured animals and are only interested in "Flipping"

(Getting free or cheap animals and selling for a quick profit) this makes it A lot harder for true rescues and sanctuaries like NR EXOTICS and the others we work with. e get NO outside funding and rely on donations to keep everything running smoothly. Thus, today Zen Asia Foundation has grown as such a brand where 20+ co-branding partners have joined hands for a trustworthy long-term relationship with Zen Asia Foundation. Artist

Victor NESTEroViC

For anyone who is reading this, fair play to you for getting EqualMagazine! I'm Victor Nesterovic and i am a Dublin based artist.

This is my second feature on Equal Magazine, i'm more than thankful for these guys releasing mine and every other artist, model, tattoo artist, etc. work to the daylight! I've not much to say about my art, as i hope the art itself can say more than myself because my words are useless against the emotion i try to create through my art, either it's happiness, or it's disgust. I'm not trying to be different because different is just the minority of being the same, i'll rather do me than do different. Regards, Vic. Thanks for the opportunity EFM Team!

“...i'll rather do me than do different...”

Glen Molloy started off his artistic journey painting graffiti years ago doing tags and the usual antics surrounding the graffiti culture with illegal artworks across the city as best he could.

Belfast was in the midst of a sectarian conflict and Glen believes it really was an achievement in itself that he didn’t end up in serious harm with Belfast being a very frightening place in the 90’s with tanks and guns being a daily sight on the streets. Let’s hear more from the man himself. Glen tells Equal Magazine…. “I had drifted in and out of painting for almost 30 160

years but it wasn’t until 2014 I found myself at a dead end with little or no reasonable job prospects so I picked up the spray cans again and just hoped for the best”.

I went under the loosely attached title of graffiti artist for maybe two years until I actually started painting portraits on the street and almost overnight decided that it was Street Art that was the way forward for me. Graffiti didn’t have any real reward for me and it would have been very hard to survive financially, also culture can be very

“i had drifted in and out of painting for almost 30 years but it wasn’t until 2014 i found myself at a dead end with little or no reasonable job prospects so i picked up the spray cans again and just hoped for the best”. aggressive with a lot of tensions within it, so a picture that speaks a thousand words seemed like a much better option compared to the thousands of words I had already written on the city walls and beyond that really didn’t say anything at all so a complete change of art for me!

Nowadays it’s all about impact that the art can have on the urban landscape. I really love painting faces in strange places in all those dull and neglected spaces, it now means thousands of people get to see my work on a daily basis which is really what any artist is looking to achieve. With graffiti it was only really about me and other graffiti writers now my artwork is for everybody young and old and on the street right in front of your face it can be brilliant self promotion but very hard work.

Painting on the streets involves a lot of preparation and a certain amount of danger is involved with being out late in the

162

middle of the night in various weather conditions the city can be quite hostile but it’s all worth the while when you get to see it completed.

I am a self-taught artist and still have loads to learn and I struggle with a lot of my paintings, I just throw myself in at the deep end and hope it turns out ok and if it doesn’t I can always paint it out and start over again. It’s knowing when to stop is the hard part as it can it can be so easy to overwork a piece and ruin the likeness of a portrait. A piece is now finished for me when I can’t spot any mistakes, very simple and effective rather than trying to add more detail than is needed. My work can really vary from a simplistic graphic style almost like a big sticker to a very detailed fine art and illustrative style with everything from lettering, landscapes and still life all in one crazy mash up, no rules just as long as it looks good. 164

Colum McEvoy began his professional career as an artist with one ambition: to create fine art works, which stretched his own ability to capture the essence of the subject matter.

Watercolour and oil technique brings photorealism to traditional Irish landscapes, nudging the observer towards a deeper appreciation of the subliminal messages communicated by art. Pretty pictures are out and challenging fine art is in. His mentor Jim Sherry of Rostrevor impressed upon him from early in life the importance of integrity – in subject matter, materials used, the process of expression. 168

They shared a profound, innate understanding of what art is really about. A love of the smell, the texture, the handling and care of every aspect of the work are all ingredients in the true artist’s store. And both of these significant artists embraced other forms of artistic expression.

Colum has collaborated with Marie McStay on several projects. ‘Carlingford Lough’ the first book to present the story of that area of Ireland in words and watercolour; ‘The Centre Cannot Hold’ a moving installation of personal growth through audio and visual fragments; exhibitions in pop up galleries.

Introducing

Joanna andr actress, Model & Writer

Joanna started her career as a makeup artist gaining 12 years experience in the field. Applying makeup for models backstage at fashion shows she enjoys in particular the Sade English Fashion Show of which, the opportunity was given to her by her friend and fellow MUA Karen Salandy.

Joanna loved being part of these events as it gave her the chance to socialise with many interesting people and network “everything happens for a reason” and “being in the right place at the right time” is actually a fact.

Joanna is fluent in Greek, which led to her becoming the translator and director’s assistant on a documentary called “ the 11th day” The Battle of Crete 1941 directed by Christos Epperson. In this documentary they travelled to Greek islands where they met WW2 veterans both British and Greek. Listening to their stories of what they had experienced and how they dealt with situations inspired Joanna to fight for what she

loved to do in life, realising it was acting. She stepped out from behind the cameras to become an actress. The chance for her to play different characters excited her fuelling her passion for acting.

Joanna went on to study theatre/stage training for 2years in Greece and at this time she would apply for many roles while acting in many films with some well known actors these include “Two faces of January” starring Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen, “Brides” starring Damien Lewis and many more, “The Hatton garden job” starring Mathew Goode, Phil Daniels etc and “Red Sky” starring Pihla Vitala.

Over the passing years Joanna Andr gained much more experience learning how things work in the industry so she took on more featured roles, one such feature was that of a mother for Fulwell73 for a Christmas ad with Three Mobile. 173

The more projects Joanna attended the more contacts she made. She says “I do find networking and socialising with so many people and attending many events is not such an easy thing but worth every minute of it as you are meeting many 174

talented people and getting more knowledge. I do find it part of the job and very important to let people know the real you.” Joanna Andr has a feature role in “ This is Life” by Benny Bereal as Jessica Jane, other features are as Carrie in “Positive Result” by Allasdair Mcwilliam and Andrew Cant where you can find on Amazon and a project that will soon be seen on TV. Another project see’s her as Adrienne Brown in “James Brown autopsy documentary” playing his wife, which will be coming out America and then UK.

is an actor, model and director, which has now become a huge passion for him

Julian has been involved in the security industry since 2001 and has been a qualified Arborist since 2011. Julian is an actor, model and director, which has now become a huge passion for him. In his past he has trained in various styles of martial arts including boxing, Thai boxing, Sho Ho Jujitsu and Capoeira. Julian has also attended a fight choreography class with Hollywood stunt trainer and coordinator Dave Lea, and is also proficient in firearms usage for TV/film. His other skills include the ability to drive, ride motorcycles, climb, scuba dive, ride horses to name but a few.

At a very young age Julian was interested in movies and how they were made and acted out. In 2014 his mother’s company received an email from an extra’s agency looking for people with beards. Julian applied and quickly found himself on the set of Wolf Hall as a Royal Guard, alongside actors like Mark Rylance and Damien Lewis. Julian then went on to work on The

Legend of Tarzan, which starred Alexander Skarsgard and Margot Robbie. After watching the actors on set Julian decided he wanted to try acting for himself, rather than being an extra. Julian started applying for main roles in films and short films, which quickly gained him interest from other makers of films. Julian has always thought it vital to network and to talk to other actors as well as crew to gain a broader knowledge of the whole industry.

Julian soon met a director called Paul J Lane who cast him in his movie 1603. Paul J Lane saw potential in Julian and invited him to join his actors club F.A.C.T (Film actors club training) to further his knowledge and build his skill set as an actor. While at F.A.C.T Julian learned everything from acting and script writing to directing, lighting and many other film making techniques, which makes him an all rounder when it comes to the craft of making films. 179

Since then he has been involved in many short movies and small roles in feature films he has become known as a very versatile actor, with the ability to play a wide variety of characters. Julian understands the importance of being versatile and becoming whatever the producers want and expect from their chosen cast members. Julian like any other good actor is willing to change his appearance for any role he is cast in. Along the way he met designer Aleah Leigh, and has been involved with some abstract yet magical photo shoots with Aleah as well as LAFW (London Alternative Fashion Week) and a catwalk for Fashion Meets Music.

After been approached by an agent he joined T-YPO Talent Agency which has giving him more opportunities to gain parts

180

in films and commercials. The list which now includes a Recruitment ad, Mobile ad, Online banking ad, stock footage and films such as ‘The Hatton Garden Job’ ‘Dangerous Game’ and the Fan made film ‘Max Payne Retribution’. After completing the acting course Julian gained a distinction award for his efforts and talents in acting and his attention to detail in making films. He is currently in talks with a Norwegian producer/director about a series of films to be shot in London and Norway, which he will play the lead role. Julian is also looking at more photo shoots and modelling shows as well as film and TV roles to develop his skill set and see where the future will take him.

“...my novel won a next generation book award and its spurred me on to write a trilogy...”

I was born in the seaside town of Banff, Aberdeenshire in 1984, and faced adversity from birth with a severe club foot. Growing up in Turriff, I spent the first six months of life in plaster and learned to walk in a leg brace frame.

I endured many operations up to the age of 17 having to take countless days off school and I suppose, that was probably the cause of me being unable to spell and I’ve recently found out that I’m dyslexic. I eventually became an electrician, and in my late teens, took up kickboxing at the Satorishido club in Fraserbough where I won two Scottish titles and a Celtic title, competing for 5 years. A few years ago, life hit me hard, with my beloved granny and mum suffering from cancer at the same time. my mental health took a battering, like some of my kickboxing opponents in the boxing-rings.

When at school the only thing that I seemed to be good at was writing stories but I left this gift untouched till I was half way

through a mental breakdown and finished my first novel, Granite Grit, just before my thirty-first birthday. The novel won a next generation book award and its spurred me on to right a trilogy, revolving around the same story by three different characters. Granite Grit is a harrowing and brutal tale of a character called Joe, a man, flooded with childhood demons, being haunted by unfinished family business. It turned out to be a complete hit and I’ve just competed my second book which is a sequel, prequel and spin off all rolled into one, titled, The Right Hand Man.

Never being one to hide from a challenge, I’ve also entered the filmmaking arena and made a gritty, short film, Cigarettes and Holdalls. Just like writing my first book I’ve thrown my energy and determination into the film and hope it will be a success too.

Bohemian, dandy, Eccentric - he's lost a finger but he's f#cking serious about acting.

after receiving the ‘Experts Choice’ award at a West End showcase 2 years ago he has since won a Best actor award for film ‘Banana Pearl’ The irrepressible Toby Osmond is an award winning Actor and Producer whose star is most definitely in ascendancy. Combining an outrageously cheeky energy with an absolute devotion to his craft, Toby has been achieving exciting things in a short space of time - despite several considerable knock-backs.

After receiving the ‘Experts Choice’ award at a West End showcase 2 years ago he has since won a Best Actor award for film ‘Banana Pearl’, which itself did well in film festivals in the US, Europe and the UK. ‘Kaufman’s Game’ in which Toby played the villain and co-produced has just secured cinematic distribution with Gravitas Ventures after being selected and winning at a number of US film festivals. His

villainous streak continues with the leading man/antagonist role in ‘Dark Beacon’, starring ‘Skins’ Actor April Pearson, also being distributed by Gravitas.

His most recent film is Tom Paton’s ‘Black Site’ – an action scifi based on the HP Lovecraft mythos. Toby is exceptionally excited about this not only because of the extremely talented cast – Mike Beckingham, Alana Wallace, Luke D'Silva and Samantha Schnitzler to name a few, but because he loves Lovecraft and has yet to see a film really do it justice. ‘Oh! Except for The Cabin in The Woods – great film’ he adds.

It is hard, however, not to mention some of the issues this otherwise jovial actor has faced in recent times. Toby mentions 185

‘i needed something that would be as loud as my leopard print fur coat, darling’ two friends from Soho recently and unexpectedly passing away in the same week, then the following week cutting off part of his finger. He then regales me with the tale of how he managed this amputation, complete with pictures, at his brother’s wedding – an incident involving a Victorian sword-stick and wedding-level inebriation.

He approaches the finger with exceptionally good humour – better than I would, though I’m pleased he explained it as I was curious about the neon pink and black dressing he’s sporting – his choice of colour scheme he explains: ‘I needed something that would be as loud as my leopard print fur coat, darling’ he exclaims.

Despite these hardships in his private life, in the few weeks since they happened Toby has been cast in 2 theatrical productions, a number of screen projects and attended a number of high profile events: A Harvey Keitel Premiere in Leicester Square, The Exit 6, Raindance and London Film Festivals as well as the Mesheme fashion label launch. Asking him for any final thoughts, he says he feels like one of the luckiest people he knows – after all his brother got married, he

186

‘didn’t lose anything more important’ (his words) to the sword and when he ‘got the chop’ (also his words) his cousin Shawn and close friends John and Alex were extremely supportive ferrying him to and from the hospital and wedding and looking after him.

I think he’s joking when he says he’s still miffed with his agent who wouldn’t let him go to a screen test 2 days after he came out of surgery while still in shock and heavily medicated. ‘I mean yes, I had a blood soaked bandage on my finger, I was on a lot of opiates, but I could have acted like I was fine!’ Toby is on Twitter: @tobyosmond

Film maker and Story Teller Some of my most vivid memories when I was growing up were those of film. The first time I saw Indiana dodge a moon sized boulder, Martin Brody face off against ‘that’ shark or Andy Dufresne giving us the best pay off of all time. Film has stuck with me, it has inspired me, amazed me and moulded me to create my own films. Finding my Dad’s JVC camcorder at aged ten and creating my very first films with my brothers, then sitting down four minutes later to watch them on the TV and that constant excitement of creating. That feeling for me has never gone away. The edits might take longer now, equipment has come on leaps and bounds, but that same excitement to create and tell a story is still there. 188

Currently I am constantly looking for new and interesting stories to tell and I like to try and make films in as many different genres and styles as I can.

Short film as a way to tell those stories is fantastic, for me it allows very concise stories to be told, it also allows to explore subjects and ideas in a really interesting way. In 2012 I won best film for my very first short film ‘Cerberus’ at an award ceremony held at The House of Commons for the ‘Film the House’ national competition. From there I have created and produced around 22 films, many have gone on to have success in film circuits and festivals and garnered awards. In 2014 I codirected a dance short with renowned choreographer Del Mak called ‘Shift’ which won 7 awards including a special award from

“i created a sci-fi drama entitled ‘Human’ which won 10 awards and has featured in over 20 festivals worldwide” Madonna who rewarded us $10,000 to give to charities of our choice. In 2016 I created a sci-fi drama entitled ‘Human’ which won 10 awards and has featured in over 20 festivals worldwide, it has also raised almost 100,000 views on YouTube in it’s first two months live online.

Slowly but surely it is all about developing your network, expanding your knowledge of your craft, and in many ways, learning from your mistakes. No filmmaker will create their ideal piece first time. It is like the old saying ‘practice makes perfect’. Always explore a shot, or an idea if you believe in it. Sometimes a film shoot will create the unexpected which wasn’t scripted or planned for and in many ways those end up being the little gems you take away. I wasn’t film school trained. I never read a book on filmmaking or the do’s and don’ts of doing so. For me personally, I have developed my own style because of that. I never feel I am on the back foot if an issue arises because I am constantly adapting and working to my environment and actors just like I did as a kid with that bulky camcorder on my shoulder.

2017 has been a hugely exciting year for me. As with previous years, I wanted to step up with the quality of footage and sound to the highest possible level. Each and every project I have developed has it’s own style and genre, but they are all shot to a beautiful standard.

THE DOORMAN Earlier in the year we completed production on ‘The Doorman’, a 45 minute espionage drama which we will pitch primarily as a pilot to a bigger more developed series. It stars Kevin Leslie ‘The Rise of the Krays’ as the principle main character Max. A character who lives a very solitary life, military trained and worked as a doorman at London hotel. The film also stars Nigel Barber ‘recently seen in the latest Mission Impossible film and alongside Daniel Craig in Spectre’. Cheryl Never completes the main cast as Gabrielle Rothchild, a mysterious yet seductive 189

woman who walks into Max’s life and changes it forever. ‘The Doorman’ is very much for me, the perfect project, not only a beautifully written piece ‘Penned by Cheryl Neve’ but also a close collaboration of the DOP ‘Richard Oakes’, the director ‘myself’ and the cast. I am a firm believer in the actors having a say, having a voice. If an actor in a project of mine has an idea for a scene or how it could be developed I am fully open and applaud it. A film will also be stronger if everyone on board feels like it has been developed and explored fully.

I absolutely love to explore genres, whether it be dance, drama, thrillers or comedy, each and every one can have huge merit and short film as tool allows film makers to explore those in the most interesting and bold styles and ways possible.

IN FLIGHT ‘In Flight’ was filmed in April this year at the stunning plane set location at ‘Black Hangar Studios’, recently used for Star Wars: Rogue One. A black comedy starring and produced by ‘Faith Elizabeth’ alongside ‘Jake Francis’ and ‘Jess Collett’. We managed to bring along around 30 absolutely astoundingly

190

good extras, a wonderful AD in the form of filmmaker Geoff Harmer and much of the same crew from The Doorman. In Flight in terms of a short film is hugely ambitious, to create and shoot a film in a real life plane, to fake an on board flight and to throw in a huge twist into the story.

I have been very thankful for the huge success we have earned over the past 5 years with the films produced, many have gone on to win awards all over the globe, to have create a really strong network of actors and fellow filmmakers and to be able to continue to create and develop bigger and bolder projects. As a director starting out, the idea of filming in a 17 storey sky rise building or a full sized passenger jet would have seemed out of reach, but with continued belief in yourself and the support of others, anything is possible. CHIMERA The third of the trilogy of films being shot in the first half of the year in ‘Chimera’, a dark twisted psychological thriller with an all-star cast including ‘Nadia Lamin – Human’ who has become the strongest of collaborators with me in recent years, ‘Angela

as a film director, i know that i cannot sit back on my past success. it has opened doors, it has earned a level of respect and it has proven that hard work, late nights ‘copious amounts of coffee’ and support can receive recognition. Dixon – Never Let Go’, ‘Andrew Lee Potts – Primeval / Wireless’, ‘Rachel Warren – The Snare’ and Marc Zammit ‘Pandorica / Homeless Ashes’. It is very much a film that will divide, shock and amaze an audience, I absolutely hate spoilers… ‘finding out everyone who found a grizzly end at the red wedding in GOT in the Metro one morning… not a happy memory!’ so I cannot give anything away, except to say you won’t see it coming. The beauty of film is to do just that, to lead an audience on a journey and be able to pull the rug from under them at any moment.

NETWORKING NETWORKING NETWORKING For me the absolute corner stone of all filmmaking is networking. The world became a whole lot smaller with the arrival of social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and this is something that you can learn to control and develop. People talk about the six degrees of separation, maybe we are all connected by those few small steps. I believe it is smaller still. We are able to write, shoot, edit and upload our own trailers and projects with so much ease these days. There is an influx of talent and work appearing online every

single second so it is so important to make sure you stand out when and where you can with what you do produce and who that reaches as a wider audience. Building a strong support network is essential, because you will always find the right crew, the best actors and thus the best chance of telling the story in the right way. I am in contact with hundreds of skilled, brilliant actors. If there is one thing I can take away from the past 5 years, is that I have seen first-hand how utterly talented and amazing the British film industry is and how it is constantly growing and adapting. THE FUTURE MARTY! As a film director, I know that I cannot sit back on my past success. It has opened doors, it has earned a level of respect and it has proven that hard work, late nights ‘copious amounts of coffee’ and support can receive recognition. But I feel like I am only on the start of my journey. Short films have a massively special place in my heart, but looking over the horizon I see a bigger, more dynamic, if harder to tame animal… The feature. I feel extremely fortunate to have my wife as a writer and a constant rock. We have an absolutely stunning script in place, 191

“...in immortal words of dory… ‘Keep on Swimming’...”

a dark sci-fi thriller, centring on people and their relationships in the hardest of times. It brings together everything I love about film, it has emotion, drama, sound weapons and a western shootout style climax. Watch this space! Beyond that I have a slate of another four shorts we are developing, I continue to be a film judge at festivals and I myself are looking to develop the very first Harrow Film Festival in the near future to discover and celebrate filmmakers in my local area.

WORDS OF ADVICE Trust in your ideas and your style. If you are an actor, it is better to bring out more of yourself in a role as ultimately what a director falls in love with will be the person playing that role. Don’t be afraid to jump out your comfort zone. I am not a writer, yet I have written several award winning films, and it was more out of necessity. I had a story I wanted to tell, so I wrote it. If you are an actor and you feel you are not being given the roles you really want to play, try writing it, or finding another to collaborate with. And finally and most importantly, do not be afraid to fail at something. I have had plenty of setbacks, but it makes you stronger to tackle those. In immortal words of Dory… ‘Keep on Swimming’. 192

From Fire Fighter to actor/Film maker

It was a Green watch first night duty minutes into the morning of January 1st 2008 New Year's Day. I had just got off the phone to my mother wishing her a happy new year looking out the window watching the fireworks in neighbouring gardens. It was 00:10am the station bells came on, i rushed to the pole and slid down to ground level and ran to the office to see what we have. Our officer shouted out "we have a fire and it's multiple calls" when it's multiple calls you know you have a big job. Let's just say whoever in the street has seen the fire will pick up the phone and dial the fire brigade. I was not driving that night I was one of two firefighters sitting in the back of the fire engine chosen to wear BA (breathing apparatus) if there's a fire we would be wearing this and entering the building. My colleague and me sat on the back with our hearts racing as we knew it was a fire and no two fires are ever the same, let's say every fire has to be dealt with caution they can all kill! We was rigging up by strapping our Breathing apparatus on to our backs and turning our cylinders on making sure we would be able to breath as soon as we put our face mask on, we were saving

time by doing this, it was a matter of minutes and we was turning into the road in North London where the fire was. What we never knew was that a baby was trapped inside. We had no idea of this as a local illegal radio station was interrupting our frequencies and we could not be informed by control that a baby was inside the building. Once we turned into the road we was overcome by thick black smoke slowing us down as it was covering most of the road. My colleague who was three months into the job looked at me with concern. I looked at him and told him to "just stay close by at all times" we knew we would be going in but we never knew what we would be facing. We pulled up outside the building and we could see the road was flooded with people shouting and screaming. This was a residential three bedroom house of two floors . We jumped out and raced to the front of the house waiting to be briefed. We could hear and see more fire engines turning up as this was turning out into a big fire. The street was busy with firefighters running back an fourth hoses laid out everywhere, it was like a war zone. It was only seconds from jumping out of

197

the fire engine and racing to the front of the house that my officer was informed a baby was trapped upstairs, he briefed my colleague and myself that there's a baby upstairs in the front bedroom and we need to do a left hand wall search and locate and rescue a baby. Now the pressure was on knowing we had minutes if this baby is alive. My colleague and myself quickly put our face masks on and dragged a hose reel in with us. We are now entering he front doors of a house that has thick black smoke gushing out the front door and blinding our vision, let's say if you raised your hand to your face you would not be able to see it, the light from our torches on our tunics were bouncing off now that's how thick the smoke was. We had made our way upstairs feeling our way around to locate the bedroom, once we located the bedroom we entered and started to search and it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. As soon as we started to search I started to hear my face mask leaking air, so i instantly went on to my hands knees and placed the hose reel between my legs and removed my helmet to star adjusting my face mask, as I was doing this my colleague was in front searching the bedroom

coming out until I find this baby alive. My life flashed in front of me and in a strange way I kind of came to terms this could be it but at the same time let's do what we can while we can, I finally tightened my face mask and the air stopped leaking so i went to pick my helmet up and continue the search, but my helmet was no where near to find which was strange as it was literally next to me, whilst I was feeling arising for my helmet I came across a baby doll on the floor I squeezed it and realised it wasn't the baby then i let go and continued feeling around on the floor, suddenly I decided to stop what I was doing and return back to that babydoll and recheck it, i just felt something was not right. I felt my way back to the babydoll again and this time I picked it up by the ankle with my left hand and held the doll close to my left ear listening and hoping to hear that cry again. Suddenly the baby cried out and possibly for the last time so now I knew I have the baby and it's alive. I stood up and shouted to my colleague to make he's way back towards the bedroom entrance as I was standing around there. My colleague made he's way back towards me and I followed him out of the room feeling our way back down the stairs and suddenly I could see light from the outside and we ran out

“We pulled up outside the building and we could see the road was flooded with people shouting and screaming”

which led him on to a bed where he was feeling he's way around. I was still kneeling on the floor and I was also communicating with my colleague keeping him informed. Suddenly I heard a faded cry which I can only describe as a kitten cry, I would not hear this till another 15 seconds later so I started to focus on the sound to determine which direction it was coming from and if it was a baby making that cry. Once again I heard the cry and this time I was adamant it was a baby's cry so I shouted out to my colleague that "the baby is alive can you hear it?" He's response was yes! Now time is against us and I know nothing can survive this thick smoke but something was alive and crying and fading each time it cried out. Hearing the cries and my face mask leaking made me realise that I may not make it out alive if I don't stop this leaking and I cannot turn my back and run out of this building and live with the thought that I left a baby in there and it died. I sure am not 198

towards it and towards an ambulance, I looked down at the baby and saw he was literally lifeless. If this babies dead it's something I would have to live with for the rest of my life. I quickly handed the baby over to the paramedics they took him off me and I bent down on to one knee and started to shake.

My colleague looked down at me and asked if I was ok. I said look I'm shaking, it must be my adrenaline. Not long after I was informed the baby survived and was well. The following day I was reflecting on all of this and had realised that everything that happened all happened for a reason, my helmet not being found led me to find a baby and the air leak was part of it. Someone was watching down that night and made me recheck that soft doll. It seemed like I was in the house for three hours but it was literally 3 minutes I was told. It was after this incident I decided life is to short and can be taken away from you within a blink of an eye, so I decided to live my life to the fullest and to do something I had

a love for but was held back because I was to scared of what people thought. I've learnt in life there will always be people that will not want to see you succeed and we just need to overlook that and believe in ourselves and live our own life and no one else's. I decided to go to an acting school and learn how to act. I then started casting for roles and being casted in what turned out to be award winning films and now I have produced a film called "Unborn Justice" a 24 minute short action/thriller. Unborn justice has been played around the world and still continues, it has won numerous award around the globe and including a big award in Hollywood. Unborn Justice has great reviews from the press, the links are below and since the success of my short film i have decided to keep writing and producing and acting. I am also close to producing a comedy pilot and a couple more feature films including a psychological thriller. I would like to thank a special woman my grandmother who passed away two months before the fire as I believe it was her keeping a vigilant eye on me that night and all this has lead me into acting and film making so Gran I love you and thank you xx Also a special thanks to my colleague Ed who played a big part in this rescue too I couldn't of done it with out him. I also want to state that working for the fire brigade is one of the most rewarding jobs, I get to meet wonderful people from different cultures and help and advise them on fire safety.

As I would like to finish on a high note, I would like to thank you all for taking the time in reading this article and Equal Magazine, who took interest in my story. I would also like to make a request, if you all could check your smoke alarms, to see if they work. If they do not work then please contact your local fire station to fit you a new smoke alarm for free today. They will also give you a free fire safety check of your home and some fire safety advice. A working smoke alarm will give you plenty of time to escape and could save your life.

SEN MONRO Actor & Film-maker

Sen (short for Senar) was born in London to Turkish Cypriot parents although he had a Greek Cypriot great grandmother.

It was evident, from an early age, that Sen had a natural ability to act as well as write fascinating stories. This talent was recognized at school and Sen was encouraged to pursue this talent. Therefore, he embarked upon the journey to hone his acting and writing skills and with this in mind, he attended various drama schools and academies both abroad and in London to get a better understanding of his craft.

Sen is also a keen sportsman and loves playing golf. He represented his school and county at football, cricket and athletics. As a footballer, he had trials at several well-known clubs, including Chelsea, Reading and Orient. He signed for

these can be seen in “Skewered”, where he plays Emre, an affable kebab shop owner and “Dead Ringer”, as Lenny Valentine, a music-loving publican.

Although Sen has played serious characters in films such as “The Cage", "Prowler" and “The Homeless And The Homeful”, he really does enjoy playing comedic characters. Examples of

Having lived abroad, Sen is a fluent speaker of French and Turkish and his ability to learn dialects and accents have all helped in the roles he has played. This linguistic ability was certainly evident in his gripping performance of Dinu Bucalet Senior, a Romanian immigrant at odds with his street-fighting son in “The Cage”.

Sen is now becoming more established and recognized in the world of film and TV, not just because of his acting but also his script writing. Indeed, Sen has set up his own film production company called GRIPPING YARNS FILMS LTD and is actively seeking to line up a star studded cast for his self-penned comedy feature film, “TWO WRONGS”. There are big hopes that this will be a smash hit!! From tiny acorns mighty oaks are made.

Interview

JaMiE CHaMBErS actor, Model Presenter, Producer

Jamie, can you tell us about the start of your acting career? Yeah, of course. I was working in a very different industry and with very different people. I found myself in a dark place and in desperate need of a change. One afternoon, at probably my lowest point, I found myself watching Transporter, with Jason Statham. It was the scene in the Bus garage and with the fight in the motor oil, it is full of action, great choreography and fantastic stunts. It was a "penny-drop" moment for me, I realised then and there, I had to quit my job and get myself into acting and stunts. I called work, told them I wasn't coming back and that was the start of me getting into the entertainment industry. 202

You were involved in football before acting, what are your other skills that are helping you with acting roles? I think I stole a lot of my skill set from working in sport. But also from my time mentoring and tutoring kids. I tend to be a "jackof-all-trades" and can try my hand at quite a bit, and I'm always trying to learn new skills whenever i can.

I guess the skills that have helped me the most with acting, are skills I picked up in school and Uni - speed reading, memorising, improvising and presenting. Other skills that are helping me are more athletic/action based. I spend a lot of time

in the gym training, as I tie physical fitness with mental fitness. I have done a lot of work with fire-arms, swords, weapons and cars, which has made me really comfortable and secure when I'm on set. The other skill that has really helped me, was studying Meisner technique with Tom Radcliffe. it gave me a solid foundation to understand my acting more fully and to appreciate acting from a different perspective.

What are your favourite projects to date? That's a tough and easy question at the same time. I've had a lot of fun roles (a lot usually ending up with a fight or me getting hurt). Fury, Star Wars and Grimsby were all great fun as they were full of action, and a chance to work with some great people. Playing a 60 year old serial killer in Slasher House 2 was a decent challenge and involved both character acting and brutal fight scenes. But I always like a challenge and the characters I played in "Estate", "Beyond Redemption" and "Hurt" were great for stretching my ability and were a serious challenge.

How has acting change your life? Well, like I said, I was in a dark place. Acting turned out to be the changing point for me emotionally, physically and socially. I am more motivated, driven and determined because I act and produce, than I ever was in my last job. I don't deal with regret very well and if I had not known that I could act, perform and fight, that would've been worse than failing at those things. For me, acting has given me the confidence and self-belief to push myself and back myself in everything I do.

Do you have any interesting film or TV projects coming up? Yeah, I really do, both as an actor and producer. In front of the camera, I'm working on a new take on Robin Hood at the start of the new year, as "Guy of Gisbourne". Then I'll be on "Made Ordinary" a new superhero film, playing a hero called "The Transling". I will also be playing "Basch", a rebellion leader, in a new sci-fi called "Lobis Vieta". Behind the camera, I am producing films and TV series over the next few years. These include projects like "3 Days of Dark" and "Express

Delivery" which you can find online and the short has won 16 awards. I am also producing feature films "Two Wrongs" and "The Invited", along with a back slate of more films and TV series. So it's going to be an incredibly busy and fun time. Away from acting and producing, I will be working closely with Aleah Leigh on London Alternative Fashion and partnering with Global sustainable Fashion as their spokesperson for 2018.

Are there people that have helped you or have been an inspiration to your career? My family and close friends have been incredibly supportive and helped me with my career so far. I am lucky that my Mum, Dad and Brother (and Nan) believed in me and gave me the time and support to develop a new career and new goals. Some of my closest friends have stood by me, watched my reels and footage, given me their honest feedback and helped me develop. My inspirations, apart form my family, have to be Jason Statham, Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy - They are all perfect examples of incredible British talent, an I aspire to perform like they do. CHARITY 208

iaPWa

international aid for the Protection & Welfare of animals IAPWA (International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals) is a UK registered charity dedicated to creating a better future for animals in need. The charity was founded in 2009, following a trip to Borneo, Malaysia, where Founder Nicky witnessed the plight of thousands of strays in desperate need of help.

Since IAPWA was established, the team have provided a lifeline to thousands of stray dogs and cats throughout the Country. Our main focus is on reducing the number of puppies and kittens born to suffer on the streets and this work is combined with providing additional veterinary care and support, an adoption programme and education sessions to create more compassionate communities. As part of our expansion plans across Malaysia, we are now preparing to start a project in

Penang to help the islands 25,000 strays at a facility due to be finished in 2018.

In 2016 we were involved in our first neutering campaign in Romania. This programme has now developed with support being provided to partner groups and through a mobile veterinary clinic due to be launched in 2018. As with our Borneo projects, we will be expanding in this region to offer as many solutions as possible to the problems faced by the strays throughout the Country. We are also currently developing further support for companion animals in other Countries from 2018, including Nepal and our first UK project partnered with Street Vet where we are helping dogs owned by homeless owners. 209

“...Our main focus is on reducing the number of puppies and kittens born to suffer...”

In September 2017, our first project to fight against the Dog Meat Trade (DMT) was launched in the Philippines. This project focuses on identifying illegal activity within the DMT and to rescue dogs subjected to this barbaric trade. These dogs are then cared for throughout their lifetime and provided with care and rehabilitative support. Education programmes are also being developed alongside neutering campaigns to reduce the number of puppies born at risk of being caught for their meat. We have also started building partnerships in other Countries with a commitment to doing all we can to end this horrendous trade. 210

Our passion for all animals has seen us develop to help other species, including support for an Elephant Orphanage in Zambia, a campaign to protect Rhinos and our 'Claws Out' Campaign against Canned Hunting for Lions. Wherever there is suffering, we aim to make a difference and for more information about our work, please visit www.facebook.com/iapwa and www.iapwa.org. With the support of animal lovers worldwide we can continue to protect and improve the welfare of animals worldwide.

K9 ANGELS

‘Every Life Counts’

So much has happened in the last 5 and half years it's sometimes hard to keep up. In that time we have built a state of the art shelter from scratch 'the k-9 Angels/Betalands shelter, we have re homed over 850 dogs taking them from hell & placing them in heavenly homes, we have spayed & neutered over 3,500 dogs & some cats too, this is the most humane & effective way to significantly cut down the stray dog problem & prevent suffering to millions of puppies, embarked on a school education tour to teach the importance of pet care & we raised close to half a million pounds, we are still slowly building a solid team & this is all from a tiny team of volunteers who all have jobs & lead busy lives.

K-9 Angels is high profile charity solely run by volunteers that have had huge celebrity support, which in its self can be misleading as we always desperately need funds. (Dog rescue is a never-ending cycle of Dogs needing help).

We have built a tiny team that consists of our patron the amazing Sue Barker OBE who also adopted her dog from us named Baiatu aka Batty. Six trustees consisting of Pola & I who are the two remaining founders, (Anneka left the charity in 2014), Sue Williams (head of finance), Rebecca Smith (head of re homing) Judy Munford (Facebook page manager & Head of Education) Fergus (finance & foster), Karin Ridgers (PR), Federica Monsone (Twitter manager) Then there's the incredible Angels who work tirelessly in the front line of dog rescue every single day, Aurelia who runs the shelter we share & Madalina. Both of these ladies are heroes in my eyes & I’m proud to know them.

So far along the way we have had some incredible celebrity support. You may remember when Pudsey’s & Ashley won Britain’s got talent back in 2012 Simon Cowell gave a huge shout out to our charity, Simon said look up K-9 Angels as they are helping dogs from the meat dog trade, support K-9 Angels. This shout out made our website crash as we had so much response. We are eternally grateful for the shout out to millions of viewers. Ricky Gervais also helped us hugely when he re-tweeted about the plight of the Odai dogs, at that point we had raised £4,000 but after Ricky Gervais just re-tweeted once we had raised £33,000! Enough to feed 680 Dogs for a year, and provide shelter help plus provide many other things needed for the shelter. The power of celebrity help can be extraordinary!

Four years ago we started our mass spay & neuter campaign. We realised that if we actually want to significantly reduce the stray dog problem & end their suffering we must sterilise as many as possible. Each year I personally take on a charity challenge to help raise the funds for the campaign. This year I wing walked on a plane that was speeding up to 150MPH, last year I climbed Africa’s tallest mountain Kilimanjaro & 2 previous years I cycled 500 & 300 miles. Spay and neuter is a huge passion of mine & I'll continue to take on crazy yearly challenges to help raise the funds. If one bitch is left un-spayed her offspring can produce up to 67,000 puppies within 6 years! This is why spay and neuter is so very, very important.

Paws 2rescue the alternative in dog rescue

Paws2Rescue was founded in 2013 to relieve the suffering of dogs in Romania by helping private shelters protect them, and to assist with food and vet treatment for the seriously abused and sick.

The EU allows each member country to prepare their own laws in the control of the stray dog population. Romania has done this, and yet on a weekly basis, these are breached. Sadly, in Romania, the government has chosen to physically control their stray animal population with public “shelters” strewn across the country, dog catchers and euthanasia. Serious cases of perverse dog abuse are also common. Romania is hell on earth for dogs.

We have supported our rescuers when extreme cases of cruelty have been discovered, the dogs rescued – and every one of them provided with vet treatment. Such cases have included human raped dogs, dogs seriously injured by axes, dogs with eyes pulled out, two legged dogs – caused by injury or sub humans evil actions, and sadly the list goes on. Other than our day to day support of the dogs saved, we work on the ground with our rescuers in working to improve conditions at vile shelters, or as a last resort, exposing them on TV and social media. We did this at 6 shelters, including two, which our team succeeded in closing down. We are a tiny charity – the alternative to those who spend donations on employees and huge UK costs – other than our insurance and accountant and one mobile – all donations go to the dogs in Romania. Please remember our name: Paws2Rescue – the alternative in dog rescue there are many ways in which people in the UK can actively help. Simply buying a bag of dog food, sharing our name, donating, putting up our flyer in the local vet or pet shop, or for those lucky few dogs, fostering or adopting a rescue. Contact us at paws2rescue@outlook.com. Our celebrity supporters include Peter Egan, Yoko Ono, Angela Humphrey, and our Patrons include Ricky Gervais, Marc Abraham (TV vet), Wendy Turner-Webster and Sam Womack.
