Meet the Newly-Certified Pilatus PC-24

An Interview with André Zimmermann, Vice President PC-24, Pilatus Aircraft Ltd With the successful certification of the Pilatus PC-24 Super Versatile Jet by the US FAA and Europe’s EASA, GA Buyer Europe gained an exclusive interview with Pilatus Aircraft’s Vice President PC-24, Andre Zimmermann. As a clean-sheet design this was Pilatus’ first jet product, and impressively the Swiss OEM enjoyed a smooth development and certification process. The PC-24 offers an extremely spacious cabin that can be adapted for any requirements that a potential client may have. It also offers a number of other unique features, as our discussion with Mr. Zimmermann reveals… GAB: PC-24 development and certification was a complex project with a tight schedule. For a company that hasn’t produced a jet before, on-time certification was an even more impressive accomplishment. How far did Pilatus’ knowledge of PC-12 manufacture go towards achieving this, and how much did Pilatus need to adapt and grow to meet the unique challenges of jet development? Zimmermann: The PC-24 was a clean-sheet design, but its DNA comes from the PC-12. Pilatus aircraft are known for their versatility through features like short- and rough-field capability, the spacious pressurized cabin, the large cargo door, the large CG-range for flexible loading, etc. This is our specialty, and with the PC-24 we took this to a new level. The Williams FJ-44-4A turbofan engines were already available when we selected them, and we worked closely with Williams to integrate them into the airplane. The higher speed of the PC-24 did take us into the transonic regime, but through wind-tunnel testing we were able to optimize our design early in the process. The biggest step was certifying to the Commuter Category of CS-23, but through an open dialog with EASA and the FAA we understood what they

were looking for and were able to show compliance to the requirements to their satisfaction. The product of all of this is the PC-24 Super Versatile Jet, which is now certified and rapidly approaching entry into service. GAB: From the outside, the whole process looked faultless. Tell us about some of the greater challenges Pilatus came up against, and how these were overcome along the road to FAA and EASA certification… Zimmermann: When challenges arose during the development program, our culture at Pilatus is for these issues to be internally communicated so that they can be resolved in a timely manner. (Every development faces challenges, but it is important how you confront them.) This way we were able to stay on course and achieve certification in the timeframe that we planned. GAB: We’ve seen that the PC-24 offers a higher maximum speed than initially projected (440kts vs 425kts). What are the other areas the jet actually exceeds its originally-projected performance? Zimmermann: We are very pleased with the performance of the PC-24. Not only is the maximum speed 15kts higher than projected, but the range with four passengers increased from 1,950nm to 2,035nm. Our rate of climb is also higher than projected, so the PC-24 can climb straight from sea level to 45,000ft in about 24 minutes 4 seconds, much less than the original projection. On top of this, the landing distance decreased 170ft down to 2,355ft. This is a testament to the innovative wing design with the large double slotted flaps and spoiler arrangement. All-in-all, these improvements make the PC-24 Super Versatile Jet an even better value proposition for our customers.

GAB: Pilatus currently has eight PC-24s on the assembly line in Stans, with 23 deliveries to customer around the world planned throughout 2018. How does Pilatus expect production to ramp up over the coming years? What is the maximum production capacity for PC-24 manufacture? Zimmermann: The 84 PC-24s that we have sold will take us to about mid-2020 to deliver. After that the production rate will depend on the market demand. GAB: US-based PlaneSense is the highly publicized first customer, and will receive several PC-24s for its fractional ownership program. What other types of customer/mission-profile will the PC-24 be flying for? How will other customers awaiting delivery of their new jets be using the PC-24? Is the picture likely to be as diverse as it is for PC-12 owners? Zimmermann: The PC-24 is known as the Super Versatile Jet exactly for that reason. PlaneSense in the US and JetFly in Europe are both Fractional Ownership programs that currently utilize PC-12s and will now expand their operations with the PC-24. Additional customers are charter operators that will add the PC-24 to their fleet. The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia has purchased the PC-24 with a fully outfitted medevac interior, to complement the PC-12’s they already operate in this role. U-Haul and other companies will be using the PC-24 as a corporate airplane that carries both people and equipment. And then we have numerous owner/operators. As you can see, it is a very diverse customer base. Just like the PC-12, we have designed it to be a workhorse, and customers will continue to challenge us with how they make use of their aircraft.

Oriens Aviation: A Fully Authorised Pilatus Centre for the British Isles

GA BUYER EUROPE MAGAZINE takes an opportunity to speak to Edwin Brenninkmeyer, CEO about the all in one service Oriens Aviation will be providing to Pilatus PC-12 customers from its new facility in Biggin Hill. GAB: In 2015 Oriens Aviation was founded as the exclusive Pilatus distributor for the British Isles and it continues to expand with the December 2017 acquisition of Avalon Aero’s MRO base at London Biggin Hill Airport. How will your customers benefit from the addition of the new services you can now provide? EDWIN: Taking maintenance in-house ensures that we secure comprehensive in-territory support for our customers, giving them reassurance that we are here to stay and are prioritising only their interests, for the long-term. We are all things Pilatus and aim to look after our clients throughout the complete lifecycle of their aircraft ownership – from advising on the best aircraft for their mission profile, to buying, maintenance, aircraft management and even to selling their aircraft and upgrading to a new model at a later date. Pilatus take pride in having achieved the #1 spot for service by Professional Pilot magazine, for the last 16 years consecutively. For this reason, they strongly endorse and support Oriens’ approach to taking maintenance in-house. GAB: Can you tell us more about your newest maintenance facility and the services Oriens Aviation will be providing at Biggin Hill? EDWIN: For a premium business aviation service centre, proximity to the capital was an obvious choice and London Biggin Hill airport is the best when it comes to location, opening hours, facilities and aeronautical fees. The newly acquired Avalon Aero team has a combined 150 years’ aircraft maintenance experience and has routinely worked on several complex types from the BAE 146 to Hawkers and Citations, to King Airs and piston twins. The team is led by Chief Engineer Steve Westran, who has 35 years’ engineering experience, is a 4500 hour commercial pilot and will have attended B1, B2 and pilot type-rating courses, specifically for the PC-12.

Commercial, strategic and personnel leadership of the whole operation falls to our Director of Maintenance Dave Plumpton who brings decades of international, MRO leadership and management experience, both in the airline and high-end business aviation industries. This gives Oriens the ability to provide worldclass quality and service to its clients, for all Pilatus products. Pilatus pride themselves in safety, quality and exceptional service above all else. Why take your aircraft anywhere other than the Pilatus approved facility, for complete peace of mind? GAB: To date most of the PC-12 owners in the British Isles maintained their aircraft in Bournemouth at the former Pilatus UK facility. How will Oriens’ becoming an Authorised Pilatus Centre affect the service levels in Bournemouth? EDWIN: With the exit of the previous Pilatus distributor, JetFly, Europe’s largest PC-12 operator immediately seized the opportunity to acquire the Bournemouth maintenance business to enhance their own operational excellence, agreeing to continue working on private, non-fleet aircraft until a new distributor became established. Oriens is hugely indebted to JetFly for their support of our customers until we were ready to provide this service ourselves. Now that we are fully ready to support our customers, Pilatus, Oriens and JetFly are all collaborating to ensure a seamless hand-over of support. Our key priority is to serve our customers for the long-term and we are grateful for JetFly’s continued support in assisting us to minimise customer disruption. The Bournemouth Chief Engineer will work closely with us and with our customers to ensure that all parties are comfortable with the transition. This will allow us to focus on our customers and JetFly to focus exclusively on its own fleet, from 2019 onwards. We are also delighted to confirm that Oriens Aviation is continuing its close collaboration with Goodwood, as a Satellite Service Centre for all Goodwood-based aircraft. The PC-12 is uniquely positioned as a large, pressurised aircraft that can routinely make use of Goodwood all year round and the relationship Oriens Aviation enjoys with Goodwood also extends to our customers who are granted exclusive membership privileges.

GAB: You are both a pilot and an aircraft owner. How does this influence your way of doing business and providing service to Oriens Aviation customers? EDWIN: It lends credibility to the organisation that the owner of the business is deeply familiar with and passionate about the product and is personally able to demonstrate its full capabilities to customers. As an aircraft owner myself for many years, I do understand what our customers expect from a first-class service centre and we will strive to exceed our customers’ expectations wherever possible. The most important thing is communication and managing customers’ expectations on cost, at all times. No invoice should ever come as a surprise to the customer and our team will work on the aircraft as if it were their own and they were paying the bills themselves. The passion for the product and making the customer happy has to be the key driver for everyone in the organisation. GAB: With your in-depth knowledge of the aviation industry how do you see General/Business Aviation sales unfolding in 2018? (i.e., there are some exciting aircraft ramping-up in production this year, including the PC-24) EDWIN: 2017 has already been a good year for business aviation in Europe with industry growth generally well ahead of GDP growth, year-on-year. We expect this trend to continue in 2018 and with the much anticipated arrival of the PC-24, timing could not be better. Additionally, the recent approval of Single Engine IFR Commercial Transport operations in Europe will further catalyse Pilatus activity in the region, as more operators seek increased competitive advantage. Pilatus Aircraft have always been renowned for holding their value and this is largely due to accurate production planning. Pilatus Centres worldwide with strong local market knowledge place their orders with the factory one year in advance, accordingly. It is never too early to place a deposit on an aircraft and secure the next available delivery slot to ensure that the wait for a new aircraft is kept to a minimum. GAB: What’s next for Oriens Aviation? EDWIN: For 2018 the sole focus of Oriens Aviation will be on consolidating its recent growth and ensuring that our customers are optimally served during this year of transition, before any further expansion is considered.

Daher recently congratulated two Polish TBM 930 Owners for their round-the-world trip with the ‘very fast turboprop’ aircraft. Here’s their story… These co-owners received their TBM 930 (Serial Number 1128) from Daher last year, and the globecircling tour – performed from November 6 to December 3, 2017 – covered a total distance of 25,831 nautical miles. Dudziak said the goal was “to reach the other side of the Earth” from his home city of Poznan, aiming for a point approximately 1,100nm. southeast of New Zealand.

It took them four weeks to complete the trip towards the end of 2017, but Tomek Dudziak and Arjan Bakker flew most of their around-the-world expedition on flight segments south of the Equator, and many of their 26 stopovers in 25 countries were at United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation World Heritage Sites (UNESCO).

“I planned to fly there and continue back home, trying to fly a nice big circle,” he explained. However, crossing oceans via northern routes would have created complications, so he decided to go island-hopping in the Pacific Ocean, and cross the Atlantic Ocean from Brazil to Cape Verde. “We thank Daher for making such a reliable, versatile aircraft and for supporting us during the trip,” Dudziak said, adding that the voyage required long legs – including several segments of more than 1,000nm when crossing the Pacific Ocean. Stopovers included Samarkand in Uzbekistan, Kathmandu (Nepal), Komodo National Park (Indonesia),

Daher TBM 910 Owner Dr John C Taylor, OBE, owner of a Daher TBM 910 very fast turboprop aircraft, received a special present for his birthday last month: a formation flight with one of World War II’s most renowned fighter aircraft: the Spitfire Mark 1a. This unique photo shoot was arranged by David Fabry, the Chief Executive Officer of Flying Smart – Daher’s TBM authorized distributor for UK and Ireland, who sold the TBM 910 to Dr Taylor earlier this year. The legendary Royal Air Force (RAF) warbird belongs to the Imperial War Museum, based at Duxford Airfield in the UK. The birthday formation flight underscored Dr Taylor’s family connection with the Spitfire and the RAF. His father, Eric, spent much of his after-work hours during

World War II helping young men learn the basics of airmanship by flying gliders – with the most skilled pilots going on to fly Spitfires. Eric Taylor’s daytime job was developing the Taylor electrically-heated flight suit, gloves and boots for crews of bomber aircraft, particularly those aboard longdistance Lancaster bombers on which the gunners had to survive in their turrets for hours at 25,000ft in very low temperatures. Dr John C Taylor, OBE, is one of the most faithful TBM customers and has had five TBMs to date, taking delivery of his first TBM 700A in 1991, followed by a TBM 700C2, a TBM 850, a TBM 900 and in May 2017, his current TBM 910. ■ More information from: www.tbm.aero

The longest flight duration was six hours (from the Totegegie Atoll in French Polynesia to Easter Island), while the longest distance was a 1,629nm flight from Easter Island to Chile’s Robinson Crusoe Island. Such extended flights required significant advance preparation, particularly since fuel is not readily available at certain stopovers – and had to be brought in by boat. The average ground speed for the global circumnavigation was 271kts. When is it Right to Transition Aircraft?

Missions change for multiple reasons. Perhaps your market area has grown, or your key executives have moved. Labor availability may prompt the relocation of a factory or distribution center. Various factors can change the requirement for range, runway performance and speed from the aircraft. Let’s consider the example of a company acquiring a new plant in a remote location. The convenient airport closest to that plant offers a 4,000ft runway at 1,000ft elevation that would restrict the range of many business aircraft on departure (including the one you’re currently operating). It could even require some aircraft to land at airports that are not as convenient to access the new plant. If that becomes necessary, it’s a sure sign that it’s time to transition to a new aircraft.

Tell Tale Sign #2 Large Upgrade Investment:

It may be that the current aircraft was the best choice with the budget available a few years ago. When purchased it was the budget-buy; a stripped-down base model. Circumstances change. This path may indeed be the best option, ultimately, but it is still wise to consider all options, including whether it could be more cost effective to transition to a different aircraft.

(In the case of trading-up, one should keep in mind that while a buyer of your current aircraft will want it clean and presentable, often they will be keen to customize it to their own tastes.)

Tell Tale Sign #3 Tax Benefits:

The upgrade options mentioned above might not be an instant expense since they may be depreciable. A closer look at your circumstances should reveal whether upgrading your current aircraft or purchasing a different aircraft is the most cost-effective decision. On the subject of taxes, an aircraft that is nearly depreciated to zero is certainly a motivating factor to switch.

Stay Ahead of the Game

Be aware of upcoming changes to your travel needs before they are implemented. Such forethought will result in fewer mishaps like cancelled flights or inconvenient fuel stops that cause delays or other surprises. In general, if there is a long-term change being considered (such as adding new destinations or upgrading and improving the aircraft), the owner is well-served to contact his or her aircraft sales/acquisitions professional and work with the Flight Department or management company to consider all options thoroughly. Keep in mind that each party may have their own agenda. By talking with all parties on your acquisition team, you will have a better understanding of why each wants you to move in a certain direction, and you will have a more rounded view to ensure that your needs are met. With thorough analysis, the right aircraft will be fueled and ready to move your travel forward.

Air Racing for the Private Pilot! So, you’ve passed your PPL, taken friends for a flight and flown to another country for lunch and participated in a club fly-out. Maybe a night rating and IR? Now what? After spending all that time and money and loving every moment so far, we all wonder what we can do next to keep the challenges and excitement coming. Some extend their cross country flights into European jaunts and some take up aerobatics. Maybe a tail dragger course or build your own plane? How about joining a roving flying club that encompasses the best of all the above? The Royal Aero Club Records, Racing and Rally Association is probably aviation’s best kept secret and may be the club for you. They have no permanent club house or airfield base, but their 66 members from all over Europe are made up of a disperate band of aircraft and member backgrounds that makes for the most fun and challenging flying and a great social scene too. After a check flight with one of the club’s check pilots to make sure you can perform tight turns without loosing or gaining height, you will qualify for your FAI International Air Race License. This allows you to compete in the Royal Aero Club RRRA Handicap Air Race series and attempt World and National Aviation Records. There is no charge for the pilot check out but there is a small £30 administration cost for the FAI license paperwork. You may think that Air Racing is an exclusive club for uber wealthy toffs. Well think again, Handicap Air Racing allows any plane that can fly flat out at 100mph or more to take part. Club Cessnas, Pipers, Robins, Austers, AA5’s and RV’s make up the majority of participants. All flown by PPL pilots who are addicted to aviation, wish to push their boundaries and have a lot of fun in the process. There are eight Air Race weekends a year at airfields in the UK, France, Ireland and Alderney. The weekend starts with all the competitors, navigators, supporting aircraft and ground crew arriving from all corners of Europe. (So a great opportunity for a cross country flight). On the Saturday morning there is a practise session of an hour and half, where the

pilots and their navigators find the course and practice their turn technique and height management. This is followed by the Saturday afternoon race and a great Saturday night social event. The Sunday race starts at 12:30. The race starts for each plane as they are flagged off at their handicap speed start time. The slow planes taking off first followed by the faster planes. The course is usually 120nm long and is four or five laps around a 25 nm cross country course. At each turn point there is a large red tent. The planes fly at 500 to 700 feet agl. If all the planes navigate and perform their turns perfectly they should all arrive at the finish line at the same time. Each plane is given two GPS units to monitor their tracks and to check if they have cut any of the corners. Accuracy, navigation, tight turns not loosing height or speed and wind drift calculations all add up to how well you do. With a dive to the finish line from point ‘Alpha’, down to 100 feet agl on the final run in, all the planes discover their finish position. Very exciting! The cost for entry is £225/plane/weekend with discounts for new competitors. After the results are calculated and the Historic Cups are presented, everyone scrambles to their planes (or cars) and heads home after a fantastic weekend of flying and fun. As well as a plethora of aviation’s most coveted silverware including the Kings Cup and Schneider Trophy, which you can still compete for, there is an accumulated point system that creates an end of season British and European Air Race Champion. The Kings Cup and the British Championship Cup is presented at the RAF Club in Piccadilly, London, usually by Prince Andrew during an annual Royal Aero Club event. So if you are looking for a club that will keep you learning and pushing your personal flying boundaries, while honing your flying skills on all levels, The Royal Aero Club Records, Racing and Rally Association is the ‘club’ for you. They also need dedicated crew to help with marshalling, time keeping, general organising and in the handicapping room, a great place to learn new skills and be part of this amazing fun and inclusive club.

Tecnam P2012 Traveller S/N 002 First Flight

Tecnam announced the successful first flight of a second P2012 Traveller aircraft occurred in December. Serial number 002 will be configured as the “Conforming Production Aircraft” and will be the template for all P2012 customer production aircraft. The US distributor for the aircraft, Ameravia, received the good news on December 20, which means that the aircraft is now certified on both sides of the Atlantic and could be considered as the best certified, full Garmin IFR aircraft for the training market. According to Vulcanair, it’s easy to fly, very forgiving, but has more performance and has the lowest price in the 180hp, fourseat market. The V1.0 is powered by the 180hp Lycoming IO-360-M1A that is capable of using AvGas or alternative fuels, and comes standard-equipped with a constant speed propeller.

Synthetic vision (SVX) is a standard feature on G3X Touch, which provides a rich, three-dimensional depiction of terrain, obstacles, water features, the runway environment, and more. The P2008JC MkII is available as VFR Night. This version has a new improved lighting system featuring both ambient light and dimmer switches. Tecnam has further improved the levels of comfort for passengers and pilots alike and delivery options include a Premium interior, with a dark styling of both the cabin and ceiling, new design of the doors, coupled with premium leather seats. FAA Registration

8 Benefits to Registering an Aircraft in Trust

The most common reason for setting up an aircraft trust is to provide a solution for aircraft owners who do not meet FAA registration requirements in the United States. You can read about the stringent eligibility requirements in our previous blog, What is an Aircraft Trust. In this article, we’ll discuss how trusts help those aircraft owners who do not meet the requirements.

He bought his Cirrus before it was approved for purchase by EASA (the European Aviation Safety Agency), and the only way he could own and operate his new plane was to register it in the United States. Owners who live in countries with similar limitations on GA aircraft, may create a trust so that they can register their aircraft with the FAA in the United States.

1. Non-Citizens who reside in the US use trusts to register their private aircraft with the FAA.

4. Publicly traded corporations have difficulty meeting FAA requirements.

Foreign nationals may live in the US, but if they are not a US citizen and have not been lawfully admitted for permanent residence, they cannot register their private aircraft with the FAA. A trust can allow them to own an aircraft and operated it in the United States with an FAA registration.

2. Foreign Nationals who are US property owners register in trust to enable frequent trips to their second homes.

Many aircraft owners who have summer homes or second homes in the United States visit their property on a regular basis. As their primary residence is outside of the US, they would not want to apply for US citizenship. An FAA registration will make it easier for them to operate their plane within the US.

3. Non-US citizens may find it difficult to register their private aircraft in their home country.

The FAA has very favorable maintenance and registration requirements, and they are known for being supportive and understanding of private aviation. Some countries, however, have aircraft requirements that focus on the operations of commercial airliners. Their rules and regulations can be very onerous and burdensome to private aircraft owners. For this reason, owners may choose to register their aircraft outside of their home country. For example, in our interview with client Roger Harr, Roger pointed out that he was

Corporations or associations organized under US or state law must have at least 75% of the voting interest owned or controlled by US citizens. Publicly-traded corporations - including many (if not most) US commercial airline companies- have very little control over their ownership structure. It’s not possible for them to guarantee who owns 75% of their interests at any given time as ownership changes daily. A trust can allow public corporations -including airlines - to own and operate aircraft in the United States.

5. Trusts provide a solution for foreign businesses that will lease a plane in the US.

The financing, leasing and operating arrangements of aircraft of all sizes have changed considerably over the years. In today’s global economy, aircraft sales, leases, financings and other transactions involve parties from many locations. It is not uncommon to have foreign lessors or foreign entities owning aircraft that operate under multinational lease arrangements. We can again point to air carriers from all nations as an example. Investors from around the globe own interests in airlines that are leased to air carriers who operate and register in the US. Even in cases where the aircraft is leased to a US citizen or entity, it cannot be registered in the United States because the actual owner lessor might not meet the FAA registration requirements. A trust can allow that plane to be registered and more easily operated in the United States.

6. Short-term trusts help new owners prepare their aircraft for export to their own country.

There are occasions where a foreign entity buys an aircraft, but it requires maintenance before it can leave the country. The new owner cannot register the plane in their own name in the US, and they can’t have the plane unregistered. They can register in a short-term interim trust while the plane is being worked on. Once repairs have been made, it can be exported out of the country.

7. Repossessed or stored aircraft.

Aircraft that are repossessed by lenders who are not US citizens can place the aircraft into trust and register it at the FAA. This allows the aircraft to be subject to FAA maintenance requirements which help maintain a higher resale value. It also allows these lenders to more effectively market the aircraft to US buyers.

8. Foreign Manufactures can register new aircraft for sale in the US.

Not all aircraft are manufactured in the US. New aircraft are owned by the manufacturer before being sold to a new buyer. Non-US aircraft manufacturers can register aircraft in trust to be demonstrated in the US and marketed to the US buyer market. In the United States, the FAA is well-known and well respected. This may help owners when they are selling their plane. Trust beneficiaries own the aircraft, and they can operate, sell, or borrow against it as with any regular structure. It’s important to note that trusts do not in any way work to enable owners to avoid paying taxes on the aircraft. They are an efficient and inexpensive way to meet FAA qualifications. Airbus Helicopters Flies High-Compression Engine Airbus Helicopters has successfully completed the first flight test of the highcompression engine demonstrator aircraft at Marignane Airport. The development and flight test of this new technology demonstrator is part of the European Clean Sky initiative’s Green Rotorcraft Integrated Technology Demonstrator (ITD) program. In addition to confirming improvements in eco-efficiency, Airbus Helicopters’ in-flight evaluations in the upcoming months will also focus on the right power-to-weight ratios that would make high-compression engines sustainable alternatives to the turbine powerplants typically used in the helicopter industry. The flight test campaign will enable Airbus to establish the engine installation at Technology Readiness Level Six (TRL 6).

H160 Prototype Gets Carbon Design Livery The third H160 prototype has received a fresh coat of paint and now features a striking “carbon� livery designed as a nod to the Airbus A350 XWB MSN2 flight-test aircraft. Both aircraft are produced using advanced composite materials supplied by Airbus’ long term partner, Hexcel.

Performed on an H225 flying testbed, the trials have demonstrated the system’s ability to select a small ground “target� from ranges of up to two miles and to automatically track it during the approach performed by the pilot. NPAS to Use Laser Protective Eyewear Having announced National Police Air Service (NPAS) will utilize laser protective eyewear to reduce the risk of laser attacks, Captain Ollie Dismore, Director of Operations for NPAS explained “Continued laser attacks on aircraft worldwide is a source of serious concern to the aviation industry.” In an attack, a laser is deliberately or recklessly shone at aircraft, sometimes persistently over a period of several minutes. The impact on a pilot is, at the very least, dangerously distracting but can be serious enough to cause temporary ‘flash’ blindness and, in some cases, lasting eye damage. “The frequency of these attacks is at a worrying level with 1532 laser strikes on UK aircraft last year officially reported to the Civil Aviation Authority.” NPAS currently use EC135/145 helicopters with four Vulcanair P68 fixed wing aircraft on order. ■ More information from: www.npas.police.uk

20 HEMS - Configured Bell 429s Bell Helicopter announced the delivery of a Bell 429 to Heliand. The delivery took place at the Bell Helicopter Prague facility, and marked the 20th HEMS configured aircraft delivered.

The aircraft is configured to support Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) and Search and Rescue (SAR) in Andorra.

Latvia Orders Additional Border Guard Helis

This order marks a further expansion of the State Border Guard’s fleet of Leonardo helicopters, adding to two AW109 Power light twins which have been successfully in service for the last ten years. The AW119Kx was chosen following a thorough assessment of competing types within the framework of the Ministry of the Interior’s helicopter fleet modernisation programme.

The State Border Guard of Latvia has signed a contract for two AW119Kx single engine helicopters plus the option for an additional unit, customized configuration and aircrew and maintenance technician training services. The aircraft will be delivered from the company’s facility in Philadelphia in 2019 and will perform a wide range of missions including search and rescue (SAR), transport, firefighting and disaster relief; replacing two ageing AB206B Jet Rangers.

New NPAS Airbase at North Weald

With full planning permission from Epping Forest District Council now in place, the National Police Air Service (NPAS) will soon start building a purpose-built airbase at North Weald Airfield in Essex. The new base will replace the existing facility at Lippitts Hill 16 miles away and form part of their national network of 15 bases providing air support to the 46 police forces of England and Wales.

National 119 Rescue Acquires H225 Helicopters

Airbus Helicopters has been awarded a contract from South Korea’s National 119 Rescue Headquarters for the purchase of two additional H225 helicopters. The National 119 Rescue Headquarters currently operates an all-Airbus helicopter fleet comprising two AS365 N2 and two

H225. This new purchase will bring the fleet of the country’s primary provider of firefighting and rescue services to six helicopters by the end of 2019. With 96% in his final examination, Christian Bierlein was the most successful of a total of 384 aircraft mechanics who completed their apprenticeship.
