I walk towards the V1.0 with a smile, the aircraft smiles back at me with the slight grin defined by the shape of its engine cowling ducts. The V1.0 stands tall on its wheels. I am 6ft tall and I can comfortably go around the aircraft and under the wing for preflight. I climb in the aircraft thanks to a comfortable tubular step near the door. The composite doors close firmly with a solid sound. I love the tubular frame appearing in some areas of the cabin interior. But I am not in a tandem taildragger! I have a 2+2 side by side seating configuration! An easy to operate tricycle landing gear and a state-of-the-art glass cockpit complete the aircraft’s useful and friendly features. The engine starts very easily by keeping it lean and enriching the mixture as soon as the propeller starts to turn. After run-up I align for take-off. The mighty Lycoming 180 hp engine revs quickly and rotation is almost instantaneous at 65 KIAS. With Vy of 80 KIAS I am climbing at over 900 feet per minute. The high-wing configuration provides an excellent visibility and I feel comfortable in such a classic looking aircraft. The speed is amazing for such a design. 2000 ft and I am reading 142 ktas @75% at 11 USG/hour.. This is thanks to the compact wingspan. In turn it’s nearly impossible to stall the aircraft inadvertently. With a wing-level attitude, the aircraft behavior both power-on and power-off is totally benign. Time to land! At full flaps @MTOW the stall speed is only 49 KIAS…. nothing to worry about. The V1.0 opens the doors of the Vulcanair Aircraft family to new aircraft owners and operators wanting a durable, affordable modern aircraft. Excellent performance, state-ofthe-art manufacturing techniques, modern avionics and exceptional value makes the V1.0 a serious alternative in today’s single-engine piston aircraft arena.

The V1.0’s structure is a combination of welded steel tubes arranged in an articulate reticular fashion (main cabin) coupled with a riveted aluminum wing, tail cone and empennage section. This arrangement insures a strong protective cabin for pilot and passengers and a lightweight structure altogether. The V1.0 is powered by the 180 hp Lycoming IO-360-M1A. The aircraft has been designed and certified to accept AvGas or alternative fuels. The aircraft cabin is extremely functional with four seats and three doors. Luggage capacity is 40 kg (88lb) in a separate and dedicated compartment accessible from the main cabin. The cockpit has been designed to keep all the commands, switches and circuit breakers in an ergonomic position for the pilot. The cockpit shape has been designed to minimize parallax errors. The standard avionics package features a Garmin G500 coupled with a GTN650 GPS-NAV-COM and an additional Garmin GNC255 NAV-COM. A digital engine monitoring system from JPI insures proper engine monitoring. The latest technology digital back-up instrument is offered in the aircraft standard package. An optional AoA (angle of attack indicator) is also available. The basic avionic package offers to the pilot an IFR equipped aircraft. For full-IFR Europe, the DME and ADF are available as an option. The standard aircraft features a constant speed propeller. A fixed-pitch propeller will also be available soon as an option. Last but not least the V1.0 is a utility category aircraft which further expands the V1.0's ambitions as an all-round performer.

GAMA Calls For CAA/ EASA Brexit Focus

GAMA Welcomes EASA Reboot

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) and the UK’s aerospace trade body, the ADS Group, have written to European Commission chief negotiator for Brexit, Michel Barnier, stressing the urgent need to begin technical and contingency planning discussions between EASA and the UK CAA ahead of the UK’s departure from the European Union.

The General Aircraft Manufacturers Association (GAMA) has welcomed the Council of the European Union’s adoption of a revamped Basic Regulation for aviation, which is set to replace the existing Regulation 216/2008 in July.

“The aviation industry in the UK, the EU and beyond is increasingly concerned about the continued lack of clarity on the status of the relationship between the UK and the EU, post-Brexit,” said the organisations.

“The impact of Brexit on aviation is not isolated to UK companies, it falls on the European aerospace industry as a whole.” In the letter, GAMA President and CEO Pete Bunce and ADS Group’s CEO Paul Everitt express the gravity of the situation: “Without an agreed solution and continued connectivity both for airlines/operators and aerospace parts, then supply chain disruption across Europe will occur, parts will be unable to be delivered, pilots and maintenance technicians will be unable to work, aerospace companies in the UK will lose foreign validations for their business, and aircraft will be grounded globally. “The impact of Brexit on aviation is not isolated to UK companies, it falls on the European aerospace industry as a whole.” www.adsgroup.org.uk

EASA Takes on New Responsibilities The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has welcomed the adoption by the Council of the European Union of updated aviation safety rules for Europe which include a new mandate for EASA. “This new mandate consolidates EASA’s scope to cover the full spectrum of the aviation landscape and reinforces the European aviation system as a whole, with the possibility for EASA and European Member States to work more closely together in a flexible way,” said an EASA statement. Patrick Ky, EASA executive director, said: “In a sector facing unprecedented technological transformation, it is important to provide EASA with the proper tools and legal foundation to support the development of the aviation industry, particularly in domains like drones and digitalisation. At the same time we need to preserve European society’s aspirations for a safer and more environmentally friendly world.” The new Basic Regulation formalises EASA’s role in the domain of drones and urban air mobility, enabling the Agency to prepare rules for all sizes of civil drones and harmonise standards for the commercial market across Europe. The regulation enhances the Agency’s role in environmental protection, research and development, and international cooperation. The new mandate also gives EASA a coordinating role for cybersecurity in aviation. The vote of the Council of the European Union concludes the legislative procedure. The new Basic Regulation is due to be published in the EU Official Journal by the end of July and will enter into force at the end of the summer break. www.easa.com

New Drone Regulations Welcomed by ERA The new civil drone rules heralded by the freshly approved Basic Regulation have been welcomed by the European Regions Airline Association (ERA). ERA’s director general Montserrat Barriga said: “We especially commend the first ever EU-wide rules to integrate civil drones into European airspace in a safe manner. In the past, many EU member states employed different rules over the use of drones and, as such, there was a lack of a harmonious approach with regards to safety. www.eraa.org

Swedavia Goes Green at Visby Sonaca 200 Awarded EASA Certification The Sonaca 200 light piston single has been certificated by EASA in the CS-VLA category. First deliveries of the type are set for September.

Two versions are currently available for sale: the Sonaca 200 Trainer for the analog version and the Sonaca 200 Trainer Pro for a glass cockpit version. The Belgian company is also working on developing two new versions of the plane: UPRT and IFR. “The Sonaca 200 certification application was filed in August 2015 and the type certificate was issued in just under three years. This is an exceptional performance,� said Harold van der Straten, CEO at Sonaca Aircraft. “On behalf of the whole Sonaca Aircraft team, I would like to thank the EASA experts and particularly [France’s] DGAC for their advice and support throughout the certification project.� Industrial production started several months ago. “We will be ready to deliver the first four planes in September 2018 and a dozen by the end of the year,� said Pierre Van Wetter, chief commercial officer and co-founder of Sonaca Aircraft. "In the context of an increased demand for pilots by the airlines, we are faced with schools which need to replace and expand their existing fleets,� said Van der Straten. Swedavia’s operations at Visby Airport have become entirely fossil-free with electrification of vehicles and other steps towards supporting sustainable transport. The company’s objective is to have entirely fossil-free operations at all ten of its airports by 2020 at the latest. Visby Airport has achieved this objective two years earlier than planned. “There is a great transformation under way in the transport sector right now, with reduced fossil carbon dioxide emissions being the top priority,� said Gunnar Jonasson, airport director. “Visby Airport is a large enterprise that uses many vehicles and equipment as well as a lot of energy to enable air transport to and from the island of Gotland. It is a major achievement that our operations at the airport are now entirely fossil-free, and I am very proud.� In ten years, fossil carbon dioxide emissions at Visby Airport have decreased from about 300 tonnes a year to zero now, he added. GA pilot Bartlomiej Kasinski has started a campaign aimed at fighting for better access to Europe’s airports for general aviation. “This is a money gathering process for a legal battle of GA pilots, for their fair access to airports/handling services in Europe,� said Kasinski.

Aero South Africa to Debut in July 2019 The organizer of Aero Friedrichshafen is to launch a new aviation event in South Africa next year, with Aero South Africa set to take place July 4-6, 2019 at the Woonderboom Airfield in Pretoria. Messe Friedrichshafen will organize the event in cooperation with its new subsidiary, Johannesburg-based Messe Frankfurt South Africa. “The collaboration with Messe Frankfurt South Africa underscores the great significance that the Aero Friedrichshafen brand enjoys around the world. In addition, Messe Frankfurt is now present in South Africa to favourably position the Aero brand there,� said Klaus Wellmann, CEO of Messe Friedrichshafen. “At a growing number of airports in Europe the fees for landing/ parking/handling for small airplanes has gone to extremes, thus making the landing there unfeasible,� he added. “Such practices are silently killing our GA flying.� He continued: “The situation differs from country to country, but it looks like that some airports, once getting commercial air traffic, increase the prices for landing/ handling to the level that GA flying there [becomes] virtually extinct. “This will be a long road, with a possible request of EU level intervention, and filings with national antimonopoly bodies. We have a good team to start this venture, and the money we are gathering will be used to finance the work of K&K Aviation Lawyers.� The law firm is looking into filing national antimonopoly suits in Poland and Greece. “This national approach is open for other countries also; the only requirement is a local legal partner for K&K with knowledge of national antimonopoly laws.� Kasinski hopes funds can be raised for a comprehensive legal analysis by Prof. Jakub Kociubiski of the University of Warsaw, leading to a draft proposal that wil be submitted to the European Commission. Dr. Piotr Kasprzyk, a GA pilot and former vice president of the Polish CAA, will act as a legal advisor. The action is also supported by AOPA Hellas (AOPA Greece) and backed by AOPA Greece president, Kyprianos Biris.

Daredevil pilots took off and landed without a runway on a Belgian beach in June as part of the world's first beach STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) competition. Discover what happened… Thousands of spectators turned the world’s first beach STOL competition in Knokke-Heist that attracted pilots from all over the world, flying everything from specialist STOL aircraft to vintage biplanes from the 1920s. The first event, the Zoute Air Trophy, saw pilots take off and land in the space of just a few yards. Both the take-off and landing distance are then added up, with the shortest distance declared the winner. The event was organised by ex-military pilot Sam Rutherford who wanted to combine the skill of landing on beaches with short take-off and landing competitions. “Aeroplanes landing on beaches has been done, and STOL competitions have existed almost since the aeroplane has existed itself. What we are doing is putting the two together,” Rutherford commented.

Piper Deutschland AG opened its doors on Saturday, June 2, 2018, to celebrate the company’s 50th Anniversary, together with customers, suppliers, business partners and friends from near and far. Wilfried Otto, CEO of Piper Deutschland, addressed the 50 year history of the company in his speech and reflected on the ups and downs in the General Aviation Industry and the impact it has had on the business.

In 1975 Henschel Flugzeugwerke appointed Wilfried Otto as Head of the Piper Distributorship. The following years were the best in General Aviation. In the late seventies Piper Deutschland sold around 150 Piper Aircraft every year. To date the company has sold more than 2,000 new Piper Aircraft.

When the new aircraft market collapsed in the eighties Henschel Flugzeugwerke put the business up for sale. Together with employees and fellow Piper Dealers, Wilfried Otto acquired the business through a Management/Employee Buy Out.

Since then the company has grown from strength to strength. The first company-owned building was constructed in 1986, followed by a second building in 1998 for aircraft maintenance and service. Wilfried Otto paid tribute to the loyalty and trust of its customers, suppliers and business partners, which is fundamental to the continued success of the company.

Today the company owns state of the art facilities covering an area of 3,600 sqm for aircraft sales, aircraft parts supply and also aircraft maintenance and service under one roof at Kassel Airport. In his speech Wilfried Otto announced that a building application has been submitted to extend the existing building in 2019/20 to enable future expansion.

When Do Short-Term Aircraft Trusts Help? When could a short-term trust help with an aircraft transaction? How are they used to bridge gaps and provide temporary solutions for owners and manufacturers? Aircraft Guaranty Corp offers insights into this useful option… When a US-registered aircraft sale is “closed,” its existing registration becomes invalid and the airplane must be reregistered by its new owner. There’s a problem when a new owner does not meet the qualifications to register the aircraft in their own name, however. An aircraft must be registered, and we know that the FAA has stringent requirements to qualify for US registration. A short-term or interim trust permits non-US citizen buyers or sellers to complete the purchase of an N-registered aircraft. You can learn more about trusts in our earlier blog, What is an aircraft trust and how does it work? Shortterm trusts can be set up rather quickly, so they’re a good solution for many purchase situations in the US.

Aircraft in Transition

Often an aircraft that is purchased by a foreign buyer must have work done in the US before it can be exported. It may require modifications to satisfy airworthiness requirements of another country. Or perhaps work is required on the airplane to meet US requirements so that it can be ferried to its new country. Whatever the specific situation, aircraft registration is required. The buyer can’t register the aircraft if they are not a US citizen. The sold aircraft cannot keep its registration through the seller. Having no registration is not an option; the aircraft would not be able to leave the country. The best – and perhaps the only – solution is to register the aircraft in trust. A trust company will work with the new owner to set up a registered trustee for the length of time needed to legally and safely get the aircraft to its new home country.

Aircraft Made by a Foreign Manufacturer

Many foreign aircraft manufacturers have facilities in the US. In this case, even when an aircraft is manufactured in the US, it is still owned by a foreign country. For this reason, the aircraft would not meet US registration requirements. A short-term trust is used for an aircraft that is made in the US by a non-US citizen manufacturer or distributor. Non-US citizen aircraft manufacturers place the titles to their aircraft in trust so that it can be used as a demonstrator in the US or marketed to US or non-US purchasers. Aircraft Repossessed or Stored If an aircraft is repossessed by lenders who are not US citizens, it can be placed into a short-term trust so that it can remain on the FAA Registry. These airplanes are often stored in the desert and are maintained, repaired and modified in the US during this period of repossession and remarketing. Obtaining or maintaining US registration is desirable in this scenario, because it proves that the aircraft will remain subject to high US maintenance standards. This will uphold the value of the aircraft. Many lenders are trying to sell their aircraft to US buyers. Marketing an airplane with a US registration helps promote these sales. 20 PISTON BUYER EUROPE AUGUST 2018

Aircraft not Certificated by the Buyer’s Country In some sales, an aircraft cannot be registered under the laws of the buyer’s country because it is a type not yet certificated by that country. Aircraft Guaranty’s client, Roger Harr, found himself in such a situation when he purchased his Cirrus in 2005 (read more in our interview with Roger: The Pilot Chronicles of Roger Harr). In this case, a short-term trust may be the only way an FAA certified aircraft can be registered and operated by a non-US citizen. Once the trust is created and the aircraft obtains a new FAA registration, the owner will be able to transport the airplane to its new home country. This registration will allow the aircraft to pass through ramp checks and customs without any problems. Buyers will have problems if they attempt to fly the airplane with the previous owner’s registration. This is a common problem that can be easily and inexpensively avoided with a trust. In Summary… Each of these situations requires a trust for a different length of time. In any of these mentioned situations, as well as in many others, a short-term trust facilitates the sale of new and used aircraft by US manufacturers, dealers, and owners to non-US citizens. If an aircraft has gone off a registration, a black hole is created that nobody wants to deal with. Once this occurs, it’s very difficult to export an aircraft and obtain registration in another country. This problem can be easily remedied – whether it’s needed for a few days or a few weeks, a short-term aircraft trust is often the best solution. Impressions of AeroExpo UK & Heli UK Expo 2018 From the BEA | Piper/Heli Air | Robinson stand at Wycombe Air Park, Brian Kane saw a young boy fling his toy glider into the sky and watch with amazement as it spun and circled around him. Possibly, right there, was the birth of a fascination for flight that, along with thousands of others, had attracted visitors to this years’ Heli UK Expo and AeroExpo UK. At the heart of this wonderful event is a mixture of attractions that are aimed to inform, entertain and excite all who are interested in light aviation. Awesome aerobatic displays and helicopter games stopped spectators in their tracks whilst others explored the wondrous array of static aircraft. These provided exciting upclose encounters with microlights and luxury executive turboprops, stimulating dreams of piloting and ownership. Three hangars, full of stands and displays, provided hours of fascinating discoveries for both fixed-wing and rotary enthusiasts. Look further and you could find just about anything an aviation enthusiast could wish for. From Avgas solutions to fire prevention training, from technical seminars to binoculars and lens hoods. It was there if you cared to look – and all the time, in the background, an army of officials, security staff and helpers worked tirelessly to ensure we were all safe and sorted.

Tornado F2A ZD902 was originally attached to 229 OCU at RAF Coningsby in a training role. In 1988 it was converted at St Athan to F2A specification. This upgrade was designed to bring early F2 airframes up to F3 standard whilst retaining the Turbo-Union RB199 103 engines. Bizarrely, ZD902 ended up being the only aircraft to receive the modifications, with most of the remaining F2s eventually becoming spares sources. ZD902 was famously used as a camera chase aircraft in 1985 flying alongside Concorde at MACH 2. Later in her service career seeing use as a trials aircraft for the Defence Research Agency, ZD902 was named TIARA (Tornado Integrated Avionics Research Aircraft). Taskings included Blue Vixen radar trials for the Sea Harrier FA2, and head-up-display work for the Eurofighter Typhoon. TIARA was one of the last test aircraft to be flown out of Royal Aircraft Establishment Farnborough in 1994, concluding 90 years of military test flying at the historic airfield. The aircraft flew for the last time on November 30th 2011, over sixmonths after the last operational RAF Tornado F3 squadrons had been stood down making this the longest serving Air Defence Variant (ADV) aircraft. She is

indeed ‘’LAST OF THE FEW” as the decal on the nose undercarriage door suggests. With the vast majority of Tornados reduced to spares parts and scrapped, ZD902 is the last complete example of the Tornado ADV, with engines fitted and hydraulic and electrical systems installed. The aircraft is currently stored in a dismantled state in a heated hangar at a former RAF base in Yorkshire, England. Preserved with regular preventative maintenance being carried out, ZD902 is ready for delivery to her next lucky owner. TIARA has led a very charmed and pampered life and despite a long service career has only clocked up an incredibly low 935 flying hours.

The Pilatus PC-24 made its first landing on an unpaved runway. The Super Versatile Jet is currently undergoing a programme of postcertification tests with special emphasis on unpaved runway operations. Pilatus plans on obtaining “Rough Field” certification in Q4 2018.

Woodbridge Airfield to the northeast of London offers optimum test conditions, and it was here that Pilatus spent two weeks testing the PC-24’s landing and take-off capabilities on the airfield’s unpaved runway for the first time.

Five PC-24 Jets Delivered to Date Pilatus obtained basic certification for the PC-24 on December 7, 2017. Since then, five aircraft have been delivered to customers in Europe and the US. A total of 23 PC-24s are scheduled for delivery in 2018.

From the outset, the PC-24 was designed for ‘off road’ operations. Its outstanding performance on short unpaved runways opens-up an incredible degree of flexibility and new opportunities. The PC-24 provides access to almost twice as many airports worldwide compared to other jets currently available on the market.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS) will use the PC-24 for medevac missions in Australia from 2019, which will obviously involve landing on and taking off from short unpaved runways. The PC-24 order book is closed for the time being. Pilatus plans to accept new orders in 2019.

Northern Ireland Reaps Peace Dividend Daher Develops Special Mission TBM French manufacturer Daher announced at the Eurosatory show in Paris last month that it has developed in ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) version of its TBM single-engine turboprop. Variants will be available based on the TBM 910 and 930 models. Key features include underwing hardpoints with connections for sensor and camera pods. A Daher flight test campaign, followed by the use of an ultra-high definition camera for photographic trials, “validated that the TBM retains its handling qualities and flight envelope performance [when flying] in the ISR configuration,” said the company. Other fitting options include a multisensor optronic retractable turret, a synthetic aperture radar/ground moving target indicator radar (SAR/GMTI), a communication interception system, and secure transmission means. In the cabin, a quick-change console can be mounted behind the pilot for an operator in charge of the various systems and tactical situation monitoring. "The new TBM ISR version brings a fast, all-weather airborne platform to the market for surveillance operations and aerial photography, with a very competitive cost-performance ratio compared to existing solutions,” said Nicolas Chabbert, director of the Daher Airplane Business Unit. “As a result, we are now offering the TBM ISR as an alternative – or complement – to medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicles and to heavier aircraft in a platform that is rapid and efficient to deploy, with limited logistics requirements,” said Chabbert. www.tbm.aero

TBM 2018 Gathering Held in Dijon The TBM Owners and Pilots Association (TBMOPA) European Gathering 2018 took place at Dijon Bourgogne Airport in May, hosted by local company, Apache Aviation Training & Services. Organised by TBMOPA president David Fabry, the meeting attracted more than 90 participants from across Europe and the U.S., with 25 TBMs arriving for the event. In addition to technical sessions organised by the Daher team and TBM equipment suppliers, the event’s unique feature was an opportunity for TBM owners and pilots to fly on board the Breitling Jet Team’s high-performance L-39 jet trainers – the team is operated by Apache. “Daher salutes the TBMOPA and David Fabry for this truly successful event,” commented Nicolas Chabbert, senior v-p of the Daher Airplane Business Unit. Jacques Bothelin, CEO of Apache Aviation Training & Services, said the European Gathering also enabled his company to introduce a new type of training for TBM pilots: Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) – using a fleet of six exFrench Air Force TB 30 Epsilon aircraft, and established with the support of Daher. The TB 30 Epsilon is a piston-engine basic trainer produced by Daher predecessor company Socata. 20 Years after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement that saw an end to the troubles in Northern Ireland, the aviation manufacturing sector in the UK Province is going from strength to strength. Aircraft manufacturing started there in 1917 when renowned Belfast shipbuilder Harland & Wolff built a De Havilland D.H.6. The company (that also built the Titanic) went on to produce more than 600 aircraft, including Avro 504s and some bombers (Handley Page V/1500s). In 1918 Aldergrove, the site of the present international airport, was selected for test flying and for production hangars. The first H&W-built V/1500 made its maiden flight from Aldergrove on 3rd September 1919, piloted by Major Keith Park (later an Air Chief Marshal, after commanding 11 Group in the Battle of Britain). Also founded in Northern Ireland, Short Brothers (“Shorts”) started out by winning a contract from the Wright Brothers in 1909 to build six Wright biplanes in Kent, England. In 1989, Shorts was acquired by Canadian manufacturer Bombardier. Famously, Shorts built the SC.1 VTOL research aircraft, which in 1960 became the first jet aircraft (with its five engines) to transition from vertical to horizontal flight and back again–demonstrating this at the Farnborough Airshow in September that year. The experience from the SC.1 was a major step towards the BAe Harrier being a successful military aircraft.

Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) believes its Airlander 10 will be a commercial success in the long-run despite an accident which destroyed the prototype last November, when the craft broke loose from its mooring mast at Cardington airfield.

The cockpit consists of a large, high definition smart display, dual Garmin touchscreen controllers (GTCs) and integrated mission controllers in the front and rear pilot positions, with the ability to display combined flight and mission data. “These NVG-compatible solutions display primary flight information in an easy-toread format, alongside terrain, ADS-B, TCAS traffic, weather information and more on large, high-resolution displays,” said the company. The Garmin Head-up Display (GHD) offers a large 30-degree by 24-degree field-of-view with a familiar presentation of critical flight information and symbology, contributing to increased operational benefits throughout every phase of flight,” said Garmin. www.garmin.com

HAV does not yet have a launch customer for the Airlander, and it believes that at least 100 hours of flight time will be required to achieve type-certification from EASA. Blackhawk and SNC Acquire XP67A King Air 350ER STC Waco, Texas-based Blackhawk Modifications, through its Vector-Hawk Aerospace (VHA) division, has teamed with Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) to offer the Blackhawk XP67A Engine+ Upgrade Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) kit for the Beechcraft King Air 350ER. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently approved Blackhawk Modifications’ XP67A Engine+ Upgrade for the aircraft at takeoff weights up to 17,500 pounds maximum allowable takeoff weight (MTOW)– significantly increasing the weight capability and horsepower output for special mission applications. With SNC, the Mission Enhancement Kit will bring this to special mission aircraft, and will include a True Blue lithium-ion battery and Advent eABS anti-skid braking system. “This after-market, system-of-systems approach, has been developed specifically for special mission applications,” said Tim Owings, executive vice president of SNC’s Integrated Mission Systems (IMS) business area. The XP67A provides a 25-30 percent increase in power, which translates into improved climb and cruise performance for King Air 350ER aircraft, especially on hot days at high-altitudes. Although the PT6A-67A will produce a 400 thermodynamic SHP increase over the stock PT6A-60A, the Blackhawk engine reduces the overall weight of the aircraft by about 18 pounds. Jim Allmon, president and CEO of Blackhawk Modifications, said: “These aircraft are often outfitted with ISR pods, antennas and camera balls in a high temperature region of the world, possibly in a hostile environment. The mission is often limited by the lack of second segment climb performance produced by the stock PT6A-60A engines, which inhibits the amount of fuel the aircraft can carry. “With our new XP67A upgrade, we meet that mission requirement at the max gross weight enabling Special Missions operators to use the 350ER to its full mission potential.” SNC is the exclusive provider of the XP67A and Mission Enhancement Kit for the King Air 350ER, and will complete the installations at its network of authorized facilities (field installations are also available).

The FAA STC obtained by Blackhawk earlier this year for the King Air 350 aircraft involved 172 flight hours (132 flights) of certification testing over a 14-month period. “Our tests have shown that the XP67A-powered King Air 350 can fly from sea level to 35,000 feet in just 18 minutes, and has a max cruise speed of up to 340 knots at 28,000 feet…We’re talking about true jet-like speeds, twice the payload, and far lower operating costs compared to a jet,” said Allmon. “This is the fastest King Air on the planet, and the performance is just phenomenal.” He added that the company has “already booked a dozen orders” for civil versions. The upgrade involves two factory-new Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67A engines and new five-blade composite propeller assemblies and spinners from Germany’s MT-Propeller. “Training, support, and a five year/2,500 hour enhanced new-engine warranty are also included,” said the company. Blackhawk is also working on a similar upgrade for the King Air 350ER, planning for certification at 16,500 lbs maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) “later this year.” The final phase of the project will consist of certifying a King Air 300 with the XP67A Engine+ Upgrade, starting early next year. How Do Airplane Upgrades Impact an Offer?

Is it better to buy a project? Or is it best to purchase an aircraft that’s already been upgraded?

How do the variables affect the price a buyer should pay? Jet Tolbert provides some insights… Currently there is a smorgasbord of upgrade options available to aircraft owners, so when considering your next aircraft purchase it’s important to begin to understand how they might impact an offer.

In today’s market many sellers are willing to hold out for top dollar to recuperate any investments they may have made to upgrade their aircraft with the latest amenities and avionics.

Advice on Buying a Project

This may be acceptable to the buyer if the aircraft’s value is in keeping with current market conditions. But buyers need to assess whether they’re paying a higher price for an airplane that has upgrades they don’t necessarily need or want. Similarly, will the upgrades retain some of their value when time comes to resell the jet? Some aircraft upgrades are a little more ‘subjective’ in their nature, offering no guarantee the buyer will recover the additional cost when they eventually come to sell. Some buyers simply prefer to purchase an airplane for less, taking the time to install required updates as they need them and ensuring they only pay extra for what is absolutely necessary to their own mission requirements. So how can a buyer determine a fair aircraft value in relation to required or existing upgrades? Following are some pointers intended to help answer some of the questions…

Advice on Turn-Key Airplanes

While it’s true that last month’s sales are old news and that the aircraft currently available ‘For Sale’ are more representative of today’s market, there is still much to be learned from the recent transactions. Often, recent sales history can tell much about the buying trends towards certain upgrades, and their impact on resale value. For example, does that brand new Wi-Fi system add value to a Light jet? Is a complete avionics retrofit a driver to sales activity on a specific Long-Range model? What are the other trending buyer preferences? Prices and the unique circumstances of an aircraft sale are not generally to be found in the public domain, but a well-connected broker should be able to help shed some

Usually sellers will not discount the price of their aircraft to account for every upgrade that a buyer wants in order to customize the airplane. If, as a buyer, you are seeking for upgrades to be made to a preferred purchase option, you can probably expect to buy a ‘project’ airplane nearly dollar-for-dollar less than the cost of mandated avionics upgrades (where required). However, the avionics and cabin upgrades that are a buyer preference (as opposed to an FAA mandate) would need to be valued on a case-by-case basis. Usually, sought-after upgrades not mandated by an aviation authority, but considered necessary by buyers (i.e. Wi-Fi) will mean less in terms of an aircraft’s value. As an example, fewer Light jet owners would be willing to pay an extra $4k/month for Wi-Fi that would only be used on relatively short trips, so state-of-the-art Wi-Fi installed on a Light jet will naturally be seen as less important than it would for a longer-range aircraft. Thus, larger jets not equipped with Wi-Fi are more likely to see a deduction in value equivalent to the cost of Wi-Fi installation, whereas for the Light jet a deduction in value is less likely. Different items differ from market-to-market. Wi-Fi is only the tip of the iceberg.

Structuring the Purchase

Buyers must be realistic. Although for many years, the market has been stacked in the buyer’s favor, those expecting to make an offer whereby a seller includes new paint, interior and other upgrades are often disappointed. Aircraft sellers tend not to seriously engage on such ‘desired’ terms. Nevertheless, an experienced purchase team with a deep understanding of both the buyer’s needs and the seller’s expectations will be able to help negotiate and structure a deal that will get the aircraft sold, and into operation in the shortest time, helping the buyer decide whether the turn-key aircraft or project aircraft is the better option, and why… T Jet Tolbert is President of American Aircraft Sales. NEWS ROUNDUP Australian Diamond Success for Alsim Alsim has announced the sale of an AL42 simulator to Diamond Airline Academy in Melbourne, Australia. It will be the first AL42 simulator, a training device that accurately replicates the experience of flying a Diamond DA42, in Australia when it is delivered in October. Diamond Airline Academy is a new flight training centre opening in Moorabbin Airport, Melbourne later this year. Diamond is planning to work with a Chinese airline to provide training for its cadets. The AL42 simulator, configured with Thielert diesel engines, will be used for procedural training and IFR. Kai Li, Diamond Airline Academy general manager, commented: “We have been seeing the [Alsim] brand name for a long time and there are not many Diamond DA42 simulators on the market. We met Alsim in February during the Singapore Airshow. Euramec Following Up on Chinese Success Hamme, Belgium-based Euramec has unveiled new products along with details of a “global expansion� into India and North America. It recently bid successfully to sell six simulators to CAFUC, a Chinese aviation university. The company has launched its first flight training device, based on the Diamond DA-42 cockpit with simulated Garmin 1000 systems, and is planning to add two new cockpit models every year. Its new range of flight training devices is based on the Diamond DA-20, DA-40 and DA-42 series and it also introducing a new Cessna 172 training device. Earlier this year Euramec and Chinese company Wright Brothers (Harbin) won a bid to supply six flight simulators in the second half of 2018 to the Civil Aviation Flight University of China, the largest civil aviation university in Asia. London Biggin Hill Airport and Associated Aircraft Group (AAG) have launched a New York Heli Shuttle service, building on the existing relationship between Teterboro Airport and Biggin Hill, which offers a London heli-shuttle service operated by Castle Air. AAG has the largest fleet of Sikorsky S-76 helicopters in the northeast U.S. The company will run the six-minute heli-shuttle transfer from Teterboro to Manhattan’s East 34th Street Heliport. John Gow, general manager of AAG, said: “We have seen how successful the London Heli Shuttle has been for London Biggin Hill and we are excited to be bringing this option to New York, through Teterboro Airport, giving passengers the fastest route between the two cities.” Robert Walters, business development director at London Biggin Hill Airport, said, “This is especially good news for charter brokers and those who regularly book travel between New York and London, as the process of travelling between the two city centres is now much simpler.” AAG is a subsidiary of Sikorsky, itself part of Lockheed Martin. Leonardo Invests in VTOL UAS Systems Italy’s Leonardo has won a significant research contract on unmanned maritime surveillance for the European Defence Agency (EDA), as part of the 35 million euro OCEAN2020 project. The programme is aimed at tackling illegal cross-Mediterranean migration.

It comes as the Leonardo continues to develop its Solo and Hero unmanned aircraft (UAS), with flight trials funded by the British and Italian defence ministries. An operational demonstration is due to take place in the Mediterranean next year, during which both the Solo and Hero will fly from naval ships. A second demonstration is scheduled for 2020 in the Baltic Sea. The Solo is based on the SW-4 manned helicopter designed and produced by PZL-Swidnik, the Polish company that Leonardo’s helicopter division (then AgustaWestland) bought in 2010. Sloane Signs Irish Air Ambulance Contract Sloane Helicopters has signed a contract with the Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR) charity to form Ireland’s first community air ambulance. One HEMS helicopter will operate for the ICRR Air Ambulance from the end of July and will be based at Cork Airport. John Kearney, CEO of ICRR, said: “Since 2008, ICRR has developed a network of over 200 volunteer doctors throughout Ireland who can be called on to deliver critical medical interventions which prevent serious injury or death. We have ten rapid response vehicles in operation to deliver a ‘land’ emergency service…. “The air ambulance service will mirror successful models across the UK and continental Europe where geographically challenging terrain warrants an air response…It will complement existing emergency services including the Athlone-based Emergency Aeromedical Service operated by the National Ambulance Service and Irish Air Corps.” It is hoped that £2 million can be raised

per annum to fund the service, which will respond to around 500 calls per year. Transcend Reveals Vy 400 City-to-City VTOL

Transcend Air Corporation has unveiled a design for an “affordable city-to-city VTOL aircraft” which could fly between cities such as New York and Boston. The six-seat, carbon-fibre Vy 400 is designed “to deliver service right from major city centers, such as Manhattan and downtown Boston, using VTOL-ready landing pads, said the U.S. company. The Vy is a tilt-wing, fly-by-wire design with a cruise speed of 405 miles per hour and a range of 450 miles. Transcend plans to launch commuter services in early 2024. Greg Bruell, co-founder and CEO of Transcend, stated: “The Vy solves multiple problems at once; we’ll take cars off congested roads, reduce pollution around airports, and lower the cost of air transportation while drastically reducing travel times.” The Vy will be “three times faster than helicopters, with half the operating costs… and three to five times faster door to door,” said the company. “Since 2009, we have built and flown 15 prototype VTOL aircraft, giving our patent-pending Vy a nearly decade-long lineage of real-world experience. Using proven technologies, including the P&WC PT6A engine and BRS Aerospace wholeaircraft parachute, and requiring no new regulatory regimes nor air traffic control systems, the Vy will finally bring civil VTOL flight within everyone’s reach.” www.transcend.aero

Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup 2018 Fourteen crews from around the world took part in the 2018 Helicopter World Cup and The Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup. Here’s what happened…

Two days of action-packed flying took place at Heli UK Expo this year, and a record number of crews turned out to battle for all-important points for the Helicopter World Cup. This year there were two classes with the World Cup (Master Class and General Class) and The Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup.

Day 1: General Class Slalom Event

First up was the slalom event. In slalom qualification the reigning World Cup champions Yury Yablokov and Konstantin Podoinitsyn recorded the fastest time of just 79.4 seconds with no penalty points, setting the bar for the entire event. The General Class Slalom Quarter Finals put British newcomers Alex FurnessSmith & Mat Reid against the best Polish crew, Marcin and Michal Szamborski with the Brits taking an early exit and the Poles romping home 2-0. Competition favourites and first-time attendees at Heli UK Expo, Martin Eigner and Michael Schauff from Germany were drawn against Brits Stuart and Chris Rimmer, and the heat ended 2-0 in favour of our German guests. The General Class Slalom Semi-Final saw the Szamborski brothers pitted against Eigner and Schauff. The Polish duo had upped their game since qualifying and flew with very few penalties, handing them a 2-0 win. The other heat was Poland versus Poland. Maria Mus and the winner of the first ever Heli UK Expo Cup, Jakub "Kuba" Malec faced UK newcomers Bartosz Konczalski and Sebastian Komosa. With everyone flying the best of three, this was the first heat to go to three runs, with Maria and Kuba bagging victory. Next up was the heat for Third and Fourth places - Eigner and Schauff versus Konczalski and Komosa. Both teams took the cautious route of flying steady, and the heat went to the best of three, with Eigner and Schauff emerging victorious. The General Class Slalom Final was an all-Polish affair with the Szamborski brothers against Mus and Malec. The Szamborksi brothers shot off the line 54 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE AUGUST 2018

followed very closely by Mus and Malec only 0.3 seconds behind in the running time - but the Szamborski brothers flew penalty-free handing them the first leg. With victory in site, the Szamborskis flew the course over 20 seconds faster securing them first place in the General Class Slalom.

Day 1: Master Class Slalom Event

Next up was the Master Class Slalom Quarter-Final. The qualifying had seen an all Russian opener with Maxim Sotnikov and Aleh Puajukas against Andrey Orekhov and Vadim Sazonov. With virtually fault free flying and between 80 and 82 seconds on the clock, Sotnikov and Puajukas won 2-1. The second heat saw Maria Mus and Kuba Malec earning a slot in both classes with excellent qualifying times. They were drawn against Russian powerhouse crew Elena Zhuperina and Nikolay Rodionov. The Polish pair bagged the first run, but the Russians stepped up the pace and won 2-1, leaving an all-Russian field. In the Master Class Slalom Semi-Final, Sotnikov and Puajukas faced Zhuperina and Rodinov. Sotnikov won the first run, then Zhuperina flew a 77.5 second run handing her the second. But victory eventually went to Sotnikov and Puajukas. The second heat saw last year’s World Cup winners, Yury Yablokov and Konstantin Podoinitsyn, compete against Zhuperin and Burov, and the reigning champions flew the fastest time of the day (75.9 seconds) fault-free. The battle for third place was now on, with Zhuperina and Rodionov against Zhuperin and Burov. It went to three runs with Zupherina credited for the fastest run of the day at 75 seconds, but victory went to Zhuperin and Burov. The Master Class Slalom Final was between Yablokov and Podoinitsyn against Sotnikov and Puajukas. Yablokov made short work of the first run with yet another record speed of 73.8 seconds handing him run one. With nerves beginning to show, Sotnikov took the second run. All came down to the last run of the day when Yablokov held his nerve and claimed victory, capping a superb day of flying.

Day 2: General Class Fender Event

The fender event followed on Day 2, with crews going through qualifying rounds to secure their places in both classes. In the General Class Fender Quarter Final, GB’s Paul Andrews and Andy McCulloch came up against the Szamborski brothers. With some steady flying, the Polish pair secured victory. The second Quarter Final was an all Polish affair and a repeat of the slalom with Maria Mus and Kuba Malec again facing Bartosz Konczalski and Sebastian Komosa. The result was also a repeat with best of three going to Mus and Malec.

Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup

The Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup was also flown within the event. This year it had a special twist in honour of the Germans who hadn't participated in UK competition before. The Final saw Great Britain versus Germany, with the winning crew, Martin Eigner and Michael Schauff, defeating the Rimmers. Third place, meanwhile, went to newbies Alex Furness-Smith and Mat Reid. To sum the competition up, 2018 saw a record number of crews attending a truly world-class event that was filled with superb and highly-entertaining flying. We look forward to seeing you next year!

The General Class Fender Semi-Final produced another all-Polish heat: Mus and Malec against the Szamborskis. In the other Semi-Final the Rimmer brothers were up against Eigner and Schauff. The Szamborskis and the Rimmers emerged victorious, with the third place play-off eventually being won by Mus and Malec. With the General Class Fender Final proving to be a family affair, it was the Szamborskis who secured first place with some fast, penalty-free flying (their fastest run being 43.4 seconds).

Day 2: Master Class Fender Event

Next came the Master Class Fender Quarter-Finals. Yablokov and Podoinitsyn came up against Andrey Orehkov and Vadim Sazonov, while the other heat saw the only British team to appear (due to their excellent qualifying round): the Rimmers were against Elena Zhuperina and Nikolay Rodionov. The Russians took a 2-0 victory with no penalties on their score-sheet. The Master Class Fender Semi-Final pitted Russia against Russia with Yablokov and Podoinitsyn against Zhuperina and Rodionov. Zhuperina gained one penalty handing the first run to her opponent. Showing she meant business, however, Zhuperina stepped-up and flew a fault-free fender in a world-record 32 seconds to level the score. Not to be outdone Yablokov reasserted his authority and broke the new record replacing it with a 32 second fender to grab his place in the final. The second Semi-Final was between Mus and Malec, and Sotnikov and Puajukas. It was clear Sotnikov wanted a place in the final, and the pair flew penalty-free to progress. The battle for third place was subsequently won by Zhuperina and Rodionov. The Master Class Fender Final saw Yablokov and Podoinitsyn against Sotnikov and Puajukas. This was certainly a day for breaking records, and Sotnikov's first fender was flown in a new world-record time of 31.6 seconds, showing he had his sights set on the gold medal. He also won the second leg (but at a more sedate pace of 32.9 seconds) handing him and his crew that gold medal, as well as those all-important points!
