‘TEAM PHOENIX’ Amputee Aerobatics

The World’s First and Only Amputee Formation Display Team Team Phoenix is the world’s only Amputee Formation Aerobatic Display Team, founded in 2021. Both pilots are above- and below-the-knee amputees. They fly high-performance military aircraft, and this is the first time in the world that this has been achieved.

Bader Foundation sponsorship scheme. Alan originally flew microlights with the Flying For Freedom programme. He was selected to be the first amputee pilot to solo a Spitfire during a training programme with Boultbee Academy in Goodwood in 2016.

Their display features graceful aerobatics, the aircraft looping and rolling in close formation while only two metres apart. It is a spectacular display showcasing the roar of the 400-horsepower radial engines and is enhanced by using smoke to draw beautiful patterns in the sky. The balletic spectacle is put to music and includes narration from their team’s commentator. The show lasts for 10 minutes and includes heart-stopping head-on passes and a heart drawn in the sky. The aim of their displays is to showcase the abilities of disabled people to act as an inspiration to the public, carrying a message of inclusivity and diversity and encouraging future generations to develop careers in STEM. The team is available for displays at air shows and private events. Mike Wildeman (Team Leader) leads the team and is a below-the-knee amputee. Mike’s background is that of a tactical C130 pilot with the RAF and Belgian Air Force. He saw active service in the first Gulf War, Bosnia, Somalia and Rwanda. For the past 25 years Mike has been an airline pilot serving as an Airbus A330/A340 aircraft commander with Virgin Atlantic Airways. Mike is also a part-time A320 Type Rating Instructor Examiner with European low-cost carrier Wizz Air, and at the L3 Harris Airline Training Academy near London Gatwick Airport. Alan Robinson (Wingman) is currently an engineer with the Royal Air Force serving on the Sentry AWAC squadron at RAF Waddington. Alan is an above-theknee amputee and learnt to fly as part of the Douglas

Women in Aviation Team Phoenix was excited to recently have trainee pilot Sherrill Semple join the team to support their work on the ground while she undergoes flight training. Sherill has a keen interest in aviation and learnt to fly as a result of a scholarship with Flying Scholarships for Disabled People (FSDP). Sherrill has HSP (Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia) yet, despite her disability, has achieved so much and says that aviation truly saved her. She is a member of the Honorable Company of Air Pilots and of the British Women’s Pilot Association (BWPA), a keen advocate of women in aviation. Marshall Aerospace Team Phoenix recently announced a partnership with Marshall Aerospace where their pilots and ground crew will work together with the Marshall team to promote inclusivity and diversity, and to inspire young people to fulfil their ambitions — whatever challenges life may throw at them.

CREATING A NEW BREED OF AIRCRAFT

by Sándor Hazafi, Sales and Marketing Director, Magnus Aircraft flight. Since then, we have invested countless hours in both ground and flight tests, all resulting in an FAA certificate. And now, we are on the way to comply with Night Visual Flight Rules and in the later stage to obtain a type certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The importance of EASA certification does not only lie within the wider range of usability but means a high standard of quality that we want to be associated with.

There are several challenges that a new manufacturer must face when stepping on stage in the aviation industry. Firstly, aircraft production is a busy market with lots and lots of experienced companies introducing cutting-edge technology into their excellent models. Over two thirds of these manufacturers are focused on supplying Europe to satisfy ever-growing demand.

Aiming for EASA Certification Last time we had the chance to share an update about the development was when we had just successfully completed the prototype’s maiden-

Fusion 213 is a ‘natural-born’ training aircraft. To make it suitable for the most scenarios (for example mastering basic aerobatic skills in preparation for emergency situations), we designed the 213 with a powerful engine and symmetrical airfoil. In addition to the existing single fuel tank in the fuselage we added tanks to each of the wings, which helped us to increase the range of the aircraft to over 1000 km. To further decrease the fuel consumption and create a comfortable flight experience, ergonomics has become an important part of redesign. A new view position, easier handling, and Garmin flight support system were introduced in the cockpit. The structure of the aircraft, including the composite lay-up, has been significantly modified to enable the aircraft to withstand the increased load factor resulting from the higher maximum take-off weight and the +6G load multiplier performance. aerobatic with associated Composite not only provides a lightweight option for the previously used metal grid structure and milled aluminium main landing gear leg, it also makes maintenance extremely easy and cost-effective. Let’s not forget about several other fields of pilot training. All summed up, we believe the 213 will become an influential player in the pilot training community and significant part of future pilot generations will find joy in their flight hours spent in a Magnus Aircraft Fusion 213.

With licence in hand, you may want to fly with friends or family to one of the numerous small airfields around Europe. If you have a full PPL, recognised throughout the world as an ‘ICAO licence’ (ICAO is the International Civil Aviation Organisation, an agency of the UN) you can fly anywhere in the world, in theory. In practice you’ll have to check for security and customs and various other considerations.

While some people learn to fly before buying an aircraft, others choose to buy either a share in a group aircraft or own one outright — and this can be ‘factory new’ or used. Furthermore, there is the possibility of financing an aircraft along with considering other costs such as training, insurance, and ongoing maintenance.

Generally private pilots fly under VFR or ‘Visual Flight Rules’ but once you have some experience, you can do an Instrument Rating — again the latter will work for flying around the world. Hiring an aircraft in another country is common though you often need to get your licence ‘validated’ by the local CAA.

How Much Does an Aircraft Cost? Depending on age, condition and capabilities, an aircraft could cost you anything from $10,000 to several million! In rough terms, the US Dollar is the currency for aircraft trading internationally, though smaller aircraft are transacted domestically in local currencies. If you wanted to purchase an aircraft for training and touring once you have your Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL), you could buy a used Cessna 172 or Piper PA28. These are four-seat aircraft and can fly 4-6 hours at around 100 knots (115 mph), and one in reasonable condition with ‘Fresh Annual’ maintenance certificate will typically set you back $50-75,000. Insurance could be $3,000 a year (premiums have been increasing) and maintenance perhaps $5,000 a year assuming you put a little into a maintenance fund. You never know, you may have an unexpected failure of something in the engine that needs replacing, that you can’t claim for under insurance or a warranty. You can also finance your purchase or buy a share in an aircraft. Whatever you do, it is usual to have a Pre-Purchase Inspection of an aircraft you are considering purchasing, and do any other ‘due diligence’.

Learning to Fly Many people start out with a trial flight at a flight school. Others fly with a family member or friend who owns an aircraft. A PPL takes commitment, of course, and finances — think $12,000 at least, including (in Europe) a minimum 45 hours of flying, 9 short exams (which you can do at the flight school), a practical flying test and a radio communications test. At the end you get a lifetime licence with a Single Engine Piston (SEP) ‘Class Rating’ which needs to be revalidated every two years, and covers you to fly any normalperformance SEP aircraft. Typical training aircraft at flying schools range from microlights (you could start with a 25-hour microlight 16 PISTON BUYER EUROPE MAY 2022

licence) to Light Sport Aircraft (there are many manufacturers including Bristell, Sling, etc) to ‘mainstream’ single-engine pistons that are fully certificated by the regulatory authorities (e.g., EASA, UK CAA). While these tend to be old Piper PA28 Warriors or Cessna C152s still, many schools are updating their fleets with newer aircraft — sometimes these are just newer Pipers and Cessnas but these days you are just as likely to see aircraft from Diamond, Cirrus, and other manufacturers from around the world. Most noticeably these have more modern avionics as glass screen have gradually been replacing older round-dial instruments – referred to by many as ‘clockwork’ instruments. Once you have your licence you can add other ratings — perhaps an instrument rating, or you may want to get an aerobatics rating, or try vintage aircraft — but most people just want to try out their hard-won licence visiting a few airfields first.

Flying into larger airports can be expensive (landing fees are based on aircraft weight but this can still be expensive) or not allowed, but the second-tier airports often mix airline and business aviation traffic with GA training and other flying, along with helicopters (e.g., training, law enforcement, helimed). Air Traffic Control (ATC) tends to be helpful and the whole ethos of the industry is ‘Safety First’ — some airspace is easy ‘Class G’ while some is controlled and complex, either ‘Class D’ or higher up, ‘Class A’. Until you have an IR, you won’t be allowed in Class A (which includes the lower and upper airways). While flying brings with it considerable responsibility, the training is designed to prepare you for the challenges, so you can have that ‘Freedom of the Air’ and have some truly amazing adventures! ■

‘e-Flight’ — the Next Big Thing in Aviation? Electrically powered aircraft are no longer a vision of the future, even if they still suffer today from the low energy density of batteries. But suppliers and aircraft manufacturers have great confidence that electric flight can make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of aviation and are investing heavily in e-flight projects. Is electric flight really the ‘next big thing’ in general aviation? In the effort to make aviation more sustainable, e-flight does have great potential in the medium term, but in the short term, electrically powered aircraft can only play to their strengths in the areas of practical flight training or sightseeing flights.

Rolls-Royce Innovation Rolls-Royce not only manufactures electric motors for aviation, but it is also actively developing new energy storage systems. To this end, the company is investing around 90 million euros over the next ten years. The energy storage solutions developed by Rolls-Royce are intended to power all-electric and hybrid-electric eVTOLs and fixed-wing aircraft with up to 19 seats. By 2035, Rolls-Royce plans to integrate more than five million battery cells per year into modular systems. These modules will deliver market-leading energy densities, according to the manufacturer.

Reliable Drives, Shame About the Batteries… The drives themselves do not pose a major challenge: electric motors are robust, do not need a lot of maintenance, and are proven and cheap to operate. But the batteries they need to store energy have another major disadvantage: their energy density is far below that of fossil fuels. This means that the range of fully electric aircraft is still very limited. Although many battery manufacturers and research institutions are working on a significant improvement in energy density — especially for use in electric cars — it will be some time before these advances can also be found in a flying and certified aircraft.

Rolls-Royce is one of the leading manufacturers of electric propulsion solutions for aviation, working on both pure electric propulsion and hybrid electric propulsion solutions. Its electric-powered experimental aircraft, the Spirit of Innovation, has just set several electric flight world records, proving that electric aircraft can be very capable. The Spirit of Innovation is now officially the fastest electric aircraft in the world and flew at a speed of 300.2 knots (555.9 km/h) on a 3 km test track, among other record-setting flights.

At AERO 2022 (27-30 April) in Friedrichshafen, Germany, visitors can see for themselves that aviation and sustainability are not opposites. On the contrary, ecology and economy go hand in hand. AERO has been supporting efforts to increase sustainability for more than ten years now, among other things with the e-Flight Expo as an integral part of the trade show. This year, trade-fair visitors will easily recognise manufacturers and projects that are particularly committed to sustainability with the help of the Sustainable Aviation Trail at AERO: green balloons will float visibly above the stands of manufacturers participating in the Sustainable Aviation Trail, highlighting these exhibitors and their innovations in particular.

VoltAero Pioneers The French company VoltAero, which will be represented at AERO with its proof-of-concept electric aircraft, is convinced that an aircraft that is to usher in a new age of general aviation must also necessarily look futuristic. At the presentation of its planned Cassio aircraft family, VoltAero announced that it would develop three different models of the Cassio: a four-seat Cassio 330 powered by 330 kW; a Cassio 480 with room for six occupants; and a Cassio 600 powered by 600 kW of power and room for ten occupants. For the production of the aircraft family, the company is building a new plant in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region in the west of France. For the markets in North America and Asia, VoltAero does not intend to produce the aircraft itself, but to grant manufacturing licences.

Bye Aerospace, Safran Combine The electric aircraft manufacturer Bye Aerospace from Denver in the US state of Colorado is working at full speed on the FAA certification of its first model, the two-seater eFlyer 2. The British flying school Skyborne Airline Academy announced, when it ordered ten eFlyers in July 2020, that it would receive an initial delivery in autumn 2022. In parallel, the company founded by George E. Bye is developing the four-seat electric monoplane, eFlyer 4, which is to find its market as a travel, training and cargo aircraft. And in addition, the company is working on the development of the twin-engine electricpowered eFlyer 800 business jet, which is expected to have a range of 500 nautical miles (926 kilometres). For the development of the electric twin-engine aircraft, Bye Aerospace is working together with the French technology group Safran, which is supplying both the complete propulsion system with its ENGINeUS motors and the GENeUSGRID energy management system. Right at the business twin’s unveiling in April 2021, potential customers underlined their interest in buying

such an aircraft in the form of paid-up letters of intent to purchase, although there is no published programme schedule for the eFlyer 800 yet. According to the company, Bye Aerospace currently has no less than 135 paid letters of intent and options on its books for the eFlyer 800. For the single-engine eFlyer models, the company has more than 760 purchase intentions and options. The total number of entries in the order book is approaching the 900 mark, including 732 contracts backed by down payments.

Harbour Air’s eBeaver As early as December 2019, a single-engine de Havilland Beaver converted to a 560 kW magni500 electric motor from magniX has flown for Canada’s Harbour Air. But, so far, Harbour Air has only been able

to complete a little more than 30 test flights with its eBeaver to collect data, optimise the power settings and provide data for certification. The prototype has exceeded the expected performance. Next on the schedule are flights to determine the glide ratio of the aircraft, Harbour Air said. But, before it can be flown again, the eBeaver must first undergo a mandatory routine inspection and will therefore not be available for test flights for a while. To speed up the testing, Harbour Air has decided to convert a second DHC-2 Beaver into an eBeaver. The aircraft with the registration C-FIFQ is already in the hangar for modification. All engine and fuel systems have already been removed and the airframe is being prepared for the installation of the new engine, Harbour Air announced. Due to the good performance, a four-blade variable pitch propeller from Hartzell was chosen for the second prototype. It offers an optimal balance between improved performance and low noise emissions. E-flight is making progress on all fronts. Electric aircraft could be a normal sight on airfields sooner than most people imagine today. ■

As the tale often goes, it’s about being in the right place at the right time [in life], and just ‘pre-Covid,’ my good friend Andy Durston said, “I’ve got a great idea!” Two months later, we were ‘TASC Vintage’. But as much as it was a new company, it definitely wasn’t a case of ‘New Kids on the Block’. Instead, it was the coming together of three like-minded individuals who’d been in the industry for a number of years independently (with occasional crossover) that decided to join forces and combine experience, connections and knowledge into one professional organisation that specialised in Vintage and Warbird transactions (and everything that goes with it!)

Next we have Mr. Andy Durston; Andy is head of training on the fleet of Warbirds Richard operates. This includes Spitfires (various Mks), Mustangs, a pair of Buchons, a Thunderbolt, a Sea Fury and more! Andy is one of the most disciplined pilots I’ve ever flown with, which is what I guess you would expect from an exNavy Hawk and Harrier Pilot! Andy flies the Mustang in the Ultimate Fighters Display Team which if you’ve not checked out before, I highly recommend jumping onto a Google page, finding them, and checking out some of their displays.

And as for myself, I’m Jamie Chalkley and as for aviation opportunities, I feel like I won the lottery when it comes to finding good luck! My Grandfather was world renowned Warbird Hunter Jim Pearce, so from the age of ‘I can’t even remember’, I was lucky enough to be climbing over Warbirds and helping out around the hangar. That meant working from the ground up; cleaning, degreasing, pushing a wing and even making chocks — I’d have a go at anything that was on offer. Eventually, though my career path led me to helicopters after one day having a tour around a police helicopter and falling in love with the idea of chasing some bad guys!

Who are we? First, we have Mr. Richard Grace; Richard is a hugely experienced Warbird pilot and engineer and he knows first-hand the ins and outs of owning a 1940s plane, for his own aircraft is the much loved two-seat Spitfire Mk. IX ‘ML407’. Richard has been called to all corners of the globe to carry out inspections and test flights on numerous Warbird aircraft and various vintage types. He also has a wellknown display flying background and flies the Buchon in the brilliant four-ship close formation Warbird display team of The Ultimate Fighters. I’ve spent many an hour listening and learning from Richard’s technical knowledge; he is quite the craftsman and basically a walking encyclopaedia!

After a mixture of professional flying and instructing I find myself today settled in a career of aircraft sales, consultancy (and still flying of course!) — this being between Eastern Atlantic Helicopters and TASC Vintage. So, if you want to land then stop, or stop then land… I’ve usually got something of interest to chat about! After some 500+ transactions and having been dropped in the deep end in some amazing places around the world, I still don’t believe for a second I’ve seen every variable, but I reckon I’ve seen and experienced more than my fair share. From finding ways to ground move aircraft over sand in the Sahara (not easy!) to working around volcanic eruptions in the Philippines, I love a challenge!

What's so special about us? Actually, we don’t think we’re ‘special’ at all! But we do count ourselves as incredibly fortunate and indeed privileged, not just to be living and working in aviation but to have the experiences we’ve had in some of the most historical aircraft on the planet (literally!) And having had a few decades of that each, our combined experience and worldwide connections are really quite something when brought all together.

Mission Status What do we do and why does it matter? Well, as I said above, we count ourselves very lucky indeed and we don’t forget that for a minute. Basically, we LOVE these aircraft! We are passionate about them, and in doing a good job in every aspect of being in, near and around them. And that’s important; aviation is something you either kinda just like, or you totally breath. We’re the latter. And that means we ‘want to serve’ both the industry and our customers. We want to keep the industry alive and well, and to keep people flying and happy. It’s important to us that legacy finds its way and that these wonderful Warbirds and Vintage masterpieces are kept flying. So, to answer the first question, “What do we do?” the answer is: “Everything we can”. Even down to our specifications, we love to do the research and include details about the history of the aircraft (which is often a wonderful journey of discovery and an interesting fact-finding mission). Our services include contract writing (happy to provide a contract and all supporting steps or work directly with lawyers and finance companies), we’re experienced in dealing with UK and foreign escrow companies. We have a huge amount of experience in shipping aircraft and working with everyone from foreign Civil Aviation Authorities to the people at the shipping port authorities. The Grace Spitfire ‘ML407’ Having already covered the background story behind the magnificent Mk. IX Spitfire in a previous article (see ‘MH415’ in the October ’21 issue), I wanted to highlight another particularly wonderful example; the two-seat ‘Grace Spitfire’, and offer just a snapshot of its impressive wartime history: ‘ML407’ rolled off the production line at Castle Bromwich in early 1944 and found active service flying some 176 combat missions (accruing some 320 combat hours!) through the last twelve months of World War II. In April 1944, ‘ML407’ was delivered to 485 New Zealand Squadron by Jackie Moggridge (one of the top female pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary), where it was handed over to Flying Officer Johnnie Houlton DFC who was accredited, while flying ‘ML407’, with the first enemy aircraft shot down over the Normandy beach head on 6th June 1944 (D-Day!). ‘ML407’ was transferred to 341 Free French Squadron to Sergeant Jean Dabos in December 1944. Thereafter it moved on through a number of Allied Squadrons including: 308 (Polish), 349 (Belgian), 345 (Free French), 332 (Norwegian) and back to 485 (New Zealand) Squadron at the cessation of hostilities. ‘ML407’ didn’t retire but found a quieter life at an RAF Maintenance Unit where it remained until being selected by Vickers-Armstrongs at Eastleigh, Southampton for conversion in 1950 to the two-seat configuration for the Irish Air Corps as an advanced fighter trainer. ‘ML407’ is maintained to the highest possible standard and is not just an exceptional example of the type, but is an iconic example of an iconic aircraft! You’ll notice it is sporting the rear-seat ‘Grace Canopy’ which is the more streamlined version of the rear bubble design. This was designed by Richard’s father Nick Grace who restored the aircraft himself between 1979 and 1985.

In the world of marketing and advertisement, the goal is to grab the attention and persuade the general public to respond in a certain way. So, what better than an aircraft flying above all the annoying ‘eye-level’ billboards, circulars, and leaflets invading your personal space. Have you ever been relaxing on a beachfront and been mesmerised by an airplane slowly towing a banner overhead? It was probably captivating as you tried to guess the message they were pulling through the sky. With this, the advertiser has captured your attention for much longer than they would with a billboard, promotional material in your mailbox, or an ad in the local newspaper. Studies have shown that more than 70 percent of people who have seen an aerial advertisement will remember when, where, and what was presented. This statistic is far better than the average form of advertising. Furthermore, the benefits of aerial advertising keep multiplying, making aerial advertising a form of marketing that is becoming far more popular and in-demand than the other forms of advertising. The specific reason for this is that Aerial Advertisement has an eco-friendly operating footprint and is less expensive than traditional advertising methods. The answer is evident when comparing the CO2 emission output of printing, distributing, and recycling mass amounts of advertising material, to a single aircraft towing a banner.

Additionally, the cost savings between traditional groundbased printing and delivery of advertising versus aerial advertising are immense and profitable.

What is Aerial Advertising?

At its core, advertising is a marketing message that utilises a non-personal message to promote or sell a product, service, or idea. Sponsors of advertising are typically companies wishing to promote their services or products. However, many charities and non-profit groups use Aerial Advertisement services to promote a cause or request donations. When it comes to Aerial Advertisement, this specialised Aerial Work sector applies advertising techniques using an aircraft. In addition, Aerial Advertising uses both static and dynamic advertisement methods. The type of aircraft used varies from manned aircraft and other means such as drones. Aerial Advertising is mainly used in highly populated areas or mass gatherings, e.g., city centres, stadiums, beaches, or open-air music festivals. Advertisers can quickly draw mass-scale attention to their products or services by leveraging the sky in these locations.

Is This a New Promotional Method?

Not at all. The Aerial Advertising sector can trace its history back to the 1920s. With a post-World War I surplus of aircraft and pilots, the aviation community quickly adapted its capabilities to the needs and pioneering spirit of the modern day marketing and advertisement world. Some of the early pioneers of aerial advertising include: • John C. Savage — Early in the 1920s, John Savage, a former RAF pilot, is credited for developing the first skywriting ad method and helping expand skywriting services in England and across the United States. • Arnold Sidney Butler — Before World War II, Arnold Butler, a business entrepreneur, utilised a fleet of Piper J-3 Cubs, implemented the towing banner concept, and was recognised for many inventions and aircraft modifications used to pick up and release banners. Since the 1930s and over the years, major corporations like Pepsi-Cola Corporation, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and many more made aerial advertising an essential part of their marketing strategy. Early on, many corporations and small businesses realised how compelling Aerial Advertising could capture the attention of a large number of people in a short period.

Is Aerial Advertising Just Banner Towing?

Absolutely not! There are many types of aerial advertising delivery methods. The types of Aerial Advertising are divided into static and dynamic displays. Static advertising consists of logos imprinted on aircraft, light signs, and banners. Dynamic advertising consists of skywriting, animated lighted signage, or even loudspeaker broadcasting. The primary, or most popular, types of Aerial Advertising methods are: • Mobile Billboard — Mobile billboard is stamping, magnetically attaching, or painting a logo or other advertising information onto the fuselage of an aircraft. In the case of balloons, the shape of the balloon can be constructed to resemble anything from a whisky bottle to a luxury car. • Skywriting or Skytyping — Skywriting and Skytyping uses one or more small fixed-wing aircraft, expels special smoke from the exhaust manifold during flight, and flies in specific patterns that create readable letters and images from the ground.

• Banner Towing — Banner towing is where a sign is towed or dragged behind a small fixed-wing aircraft or slung underneath a helicopter. There are three types of banners used in banner towing, they are: o Standard letters — Standard letter banners use standard letters consisting of either 5-foot-high or 7-foot-high letters linked together by connections designed for interchangeability. Standard letters have been the prevalent form of banner towing for the past few decades. A typical light aircraft can tow 25 7-foot letters or 35 5-foot letters. o Aerial billboards — Aerial billboards consist of a large area of nylon cloth and are painted or dyed with a sun inhibitor for protection. This type of banner allows for vivid pictures and can be towed either behind an aircraft or below a helicopter. Fixed-wing aircraft-towed billboards tend to be rectangular. Helicopter billboards veer to be square in shape to prevent the top corner from drooping. In general, aerial billboards are as large as 50 feet tall and 100 feet long, allowing for 1500 square feet of visibility. o Logo banners — Aerial logo banners are often ads without or with limited words. For example, a billboard containing only the company’s logo is pulled over a large gathering of people as a reminder of their service or product, i.e., for brand awareness. However, some logo banners might have a smaller Standard Letter banner attached at the end to provide additional information. This technique is most often used for advertising a brand but can also be used for a marriage proposal or party invitation.

What Kind of Aircraft do Aerial Advertisers Use?

When it comes to Aerial Advertising, in general, high-flying fast jets don’t provide the low & slow dwell-time for viewers to comprehend and understand the advertised message. The exception is aerobatic teams like The Flying Redbulls and the Breitling Jet Team that perform with their sponsor’s logo-painted aircraft, i.e., ‘Mobile Billboard’ advertising. The standard aircraft types used in Aerial Advertising are manned fixed-wing, rotor-wing, and lighter-than-air platforms. Following manned aircraft is a mix of unique controlled or uncontrolled unmanned platforms. The

specific description of these types of Aerial Advertising aircraft are: Fixed-Wing Aircraft The most common fixed-wing aircraft used for mobile billboards and aerial advertising are light single-engine GA aircraft, especially in the short takeoff and landing (STOL) category. The standard fixed-wing banner-towing operation involves an operator attaching a grappling hook and a towline to the aircraft’s empennage before the flight. Once in flight, the operator flies back and conducts an aerial pickup of the banner, billboard, or streamer. While in flight, the wind resistance causes the banner to flow out behind the aircraft, allowing it to be clearly seen by those nearby. Regarding Skywriting & Skytyping, the aircraft used are usually single-engine aerobatic or classic warbird aircraft. The skywriting process usually uses one airplane, releasing a steady stream of smoke to produce a single image or letter. Skywriting messages are typically made at 3,000 feet and are limited to a few letters because of the winds. Skytyping consists of several aircraft quickly flying in line formation, releasing puffs of smoke under computer control, e.g., comparable to characters produced by a dotmatrix printer. These messages are generally written at 10,000 feet and can be up to 1,250 feet high and over five miles long. Some of the popular types of aircraft used today for banner towing and skywriting are: • Piper Aircraft — J-3 Cub • Cessna Corporation — C150, C172 • North American — T-6 Texan Rotor-Wing Aircraft In the world of Aerial Advertising, helicopters are primarily used as mobile billboards and for banner towing. Therefore, the typical type of platform used is the lightlift helicopter. Outside of painting logos, etc., on the outside of a helicopter (mobile billboarding), helicopters can tow or slash large flags, typically made by joining many rows of printed fabric to create one image. The typical size of these banners is 20,000 sq ft, making them visible for greater distances, due to their scale, than typical fixedwing aircraft banners. Like many other Aerial Work sectors that use helicopters for specialised lifting, these helicopters are frequently employed to tow banners and more: • Robinson — R22, R44 • Bell — Bell 407s • Airbus Helicopters — H125 Lighter-than-Air (LTA) Platforms The types of LTAs used in Aerial Advertisement are both manned and unmanned airships, free balloons, and kite balloons. LTAs are primarily used as mobile billboards and, in some cases, for unique dynamic advertising, e.g., beaming branded WiFi signals, aerial filming, and more. LTAs are effective advertisement platforms due to their slow speed, long loiter time, and inexpensive fuel costs. Additionally, LTAs are used outdoors and indoors, i.e., in enclosed event arenas, stadiums, etc. ❯

Some of the popular types of LTAs used today are: • LighterThanAir — Tailor-made hot air balloons • MicroFlight Inc. — eBlimp • Egan Airships Inc. — Plimp Airships Drones Drones are the apprentices of the Aerial Advertising sector. Even though this technology has been around for almost a decade, it is still not used at the same level as manned advertising aircraft because of regulatory and public-perception issues. However, the commercial drone community continues to explore and innovate with unique ways of applying the methods of aerial advertisement to the current capabilities of a drone. The drone Aerial Advertising sector mainly utilises quadcopters and octocopters for banner towing and mobile billboards. Like LTAs, they’re used in special dynamic advertisements, e.g., air-dropping branded products or freebies, plus conducting highperformance choreography swarm light shows – very similar to skywriting but without the oily smoke. Depending on the type of advertising, the leading drone platforms used for such unique dynamic services are: • UVify Inc. — IFO – S • DJI — s1000 Octocopter • CAT UAV — EXO C2-L The Future of Aerial Advertising Like many other Aerial Work aviation sectors, the future looks very good. With the ever-increasing demand by companies to draw more and more attention to their products and services in an innovative and ‘eye-catching’ way, the need for unique and innovative delivery methods like aerial advertising will continue to be in demand. With new types of technology proliferating every day, the aerial advertising

community will for sure improve on traditional methods and introduce new concepts, i.e., more dynamic vs. static marketing. Therefore, it is not ‘out-of-the-realm-ofpossibilities’ that Aerial Advertisement will become part of a virtual ‘real-time’ marketing network vs. just a stand-alone static flying billboard.

In 2002, aps was founded by Wolfgang DillbaumAlexius. Relatively quickly, the project took on such momentum that a prosperous future was foreseeable. In the same year, aps signed its first distribution contract with the American parts manufacturer McFarlane Aviation.

After the success of the first years, aps moved to Mönchengladbach Airport and the first employees joined the company. At this point, Piper AG acquired a minority stake in aps.

2010 New location in Airport Park Due to rapid growth, aps settled at its current location at Willicher Damm 141. After the take-back of all aps shares from Piper AG, all company rights were reverted to aps. More spare parts found their place in the first warehouse and new employees, among them Sabine Lomanns, joined the company.

In 2011, aps' sister company, aps Aviation Parts Service d.o.o., was established in Belgrade, Serbia. In addition, aps recorded further successes in expanding its extensive network: by participating in the first AERO tradeshow as an exhibitor and becoming a member of the Aviation Distributors and Manufacturers Association (ADMA). During these years, aps expanded its business model by signing its first consignment agreement. With the increase of the

stock to 15,000 items, aps opted for a highly professional inventory management system (SAP One).

In view of the steady and rapid increase in spare parts distribution, aps took the next step and expanded its warehouse facility. Other achievements of the year were the signing of numerous new distribution agreements, e.g. with Concorde, Whelan, Tempest (etc.).

Warehouse expansion

The steadily growing inventory of aps demanded a solution that efficiently maximised storage space. This led to the reconstruction of the second warehouse. In 2019-2021, Wolfgang Dillbaum-Alexius, the Managing Director of aps, functioned as President of ADMA.

2022 Transformation of customer experience Today, aps carries more than 65,000+ line items in its inventory, can even call up several million items from all well-known manufacturers with just a few clicks, and 15 employees serve its customers with a proven digital workflow.To take the customer experience to the next level, aps recently launched its self-developed surplus search app and brand new webshop.
