In October 2011, the World Bank, Water and Sanitation Program, and partners convened the Water Hackathon – a simultaneous staging of 10 hackathon events globally – to raise awareness of 1) water problems among the technology community and 2) Information & Communication Technologies solutions among water experts. The Water Hackathon sought to highlight the development role of ICT applications in water management, service delivery, ensuring transparency and driving citizen participation. The key variables, which set Water Hackathon apart from other hackathons, were the deep engagement of subject matter specialists, early collaboration among the water and the computer programming communities to identify and translate water problems into technological needs, and post-event follow-up to track the progress of prototype development. This collaborative process led to the creation of more than 65 application prototypes aimed at water problems across the world.
