Dear Reader,

Another successful year has passed by, and we are proud to present the third issue of our annual magazine. In this issue, we introduce you to our new slogan that encapsulates the essence of our Resort, and what it offers to every single person who passes through. A motto that beautifully describes how Aphrodite Hills has become a place where feelings and senses are awakened. To reach a destination, it needs a direction, and the path we take aligns with our sense of purpose. Life, experience, giving, love, journey, taste, scents, exercise, health, spirit, family, friendship, business, future, vision, relaxation, exploration, relocation, investment, happiness, special moments, memories - each one evoking a sense of purpose driving this journey that we call life. For some, this journey brings us here. For others, the journey begins here. Aphrodite Hills Resort is The Destination of All Senses â€“ providing a unique sense of living. Paging through our magazine, you will get a strong feeling of what our Resort represents. A place full of experiences and momentsâ€Ś perfect moments. An incredible photoshoot took place on our premises, of which the results were visually stunning and brought the Resort to life, as we know it to be - The Destination of All Senses. Some of the main images accompanying the magazine articles are raw, non-edited photographs that have perfectly captured the experiences of a couple, a family and a group of friends in and around our Resort. Unadulterated images that induce an almost tangible sense of emotion in every perfect moment captured on film. These photographs were so impactful, that we decided to create our own advertising case study and utilise the images therein without the need for post-production editing. HISTORY | THE VISION

Lanitis Family The Realization of a Vision Evagoras Lanitis once had a vision, to turn the agricultural land that his father, Costas P. Lanitis, had bought in Kouklia in 1933, into a Golf Resort of international acclaim. In 1990, work on this immense project by the Lanitis Group was initiated, and the dream began to take shape. But before the Lanitis Group became the inimitable powerhouse it is today; their beginnings were that of a simple family from Lania. Story by Rachel Chrysostom

Near the end of the 19th century, a farmer from the village of Lania began selling his agricultural produce in Limassol. This was Panagis Sykas, a man with no prior education or business know-how, who, unbeknownst to him, would one day initiate the start of what would become the internationally renowned Lanitis Group. Because of his origins from Lania, customers of Panagis Sykas began calling him ‘Lanitis,’ a name that stuck when he settled in Limassol to continue his business of trading foodstuffs. In 1896, his two sons, Nicolas P. Lanitis and Costas P. Lanitis, established a business partnership, N.P. Lanitis Co. Ltd., which eventually became the backbone of the Lanitis Group. At the time, carobs were frequently traded with the nearby countries, and they became a large part of the company’s trading portfolio.

Under the dynamic leadership of the late Evagoras Lanitis, the Lanitis Group grew to even greater strengths. THE FORMATION OF THE LANITIS GROUP

Having inherited the business acumen of their father, Nicolas and Costas P. Lanitis began to diversify their company, becoming involved in several business ventures they believed had good prospects at the time, from shipping and trading to banking. The brothers also acquired a great deal of farming land in the villages of Alektora and Kouklia, as well as the area west of Limassol. By 1945, Evagoras P. Lanitis, had joined the company to work alongside his father and uncle, learning valuable lessons that would help him continue the company’s expansion into even more areas in the future. This included the founding of Cybarco Ltd., which marked the company’s move into the construction sector. Under the dynamic leadership of the late Evagoras Lanitis, who was also known for

his humanitarian and social contributions in the areas of education, archaeology, health and sports, the Lanitis Group grew to even greater strengths. The Group is currently managed under the leadership of the 4th generation of the Lanitis family.

In 1999, the Lanitis Group began development on Aphrodite Hills Resort, realizing the dream of Evagoras Lanitis to build a Golf Resort with international acclaim, one that could stand alone amongst the best in the world. The idea behind brunch was a simple one – it was based on a hangover - and it originated from British writer Guy Beringer in his 1895 article “Brunch: A Plea” that appeared in Hunter’s Weekly. Beringer proposed that rather than serving heavy, early morning post-church fare, as was the Sunday norm, to instead offer a lighter late morning meal to help those nursing hangovers from the previous night. The meal was to be a fusion of breakfast and lunch.

More than 30 years later, brunch started taking off in the US, particularly after WW2.

Beringer believed brunch to be a social affair, a coming together of sorts where friends shared stories of the shenanigans that occurred the previous night. He also saw it to ease one’s queasy stomach before indulging in food.

THE EVOLUTION OF BRUNCH

More than 30 years later, brunch started taking off in the US as well, particularly after WW2 when women were also entering the workforce fulltime and looking forward to Sundays to eat out with the family after a late lie-in. Restaurants were quick to respond, and brunch time became a popular social outlet amongst families and friends.

Soutzoukkos a Cypriot delicacy Story by Eleni Hoplaros

When in Cyprus, tasting all things distinctly Cypriot, is a definite must. Soutzoukkos is one of those foods. This unique looking, candle-shaped chewy sweet is a popular snack produced primarily in the wine-making regions of Paphos and Troodos, after the grape harvest. It is made from a mixture of surplus grape juice and flour called moustalevria (or palouze). There are four basic steps to making soutzoukkos, all of which require a little bit of patience but are relatively easy to do.

Step 1:

Almonds or walnuts are dipped into water, after which they are then threaded onto 2-3 metre long string. These are hung outside to dry in the sun for 2-3 days.

Step 2:

The threaded nuts are then dipped into the hot moustalevria mix until they are completely coated and then hung out to dry. The strands should take approximately 20 minutes to cool, by which point they shouldnâ€™t be sticky to the touch. Make sure to leave some newspaper under the strands as they do drip.

Step 3:

The process of dipping is repeated 3-5 times until the required thickness is attained. This can take just a few hours or a few days. Each layer must dry before it can be coated in moustalevria again.

Step 4:

Soutzoukkos takes about 5-6 days to fully dry. It can then be stored for several months.

Soutzoukkos can be eaten on its own in bite-sized chunks or accompanied by a cold drink or local Zivania. Either way, it makes for a delicious snack!

COMFORTING AND HOMELY

Bread is a staple food which features heavily in everyone’s childhood, and research has shown that because of this, it has become one of the smells that evokes strong memories of family and comfort. In other words, bread makes us happy. But did you know that it can also make us kind? Researchers at the University of Southern Brittany in France conducted a study which found that shoppers were more likely to alert a passer-by that they had dropped a belonging if, at the time, they were also passing a bakery that was giving off the mouthwatering scent of freshly baked bread. Their findings, published in the Journal of Social Psychology, thus suggest that certain smells trigger a positive, happy mood, which then leads to a greater degree of altruism and concern for the welfare of others. Of course, it makes sense that cheery people would be more inclined to be kinder and helpful, but this was the first time that an experiment proved that pleasant smells translate into something as tangible as a more benevolent attitude towards strangers.

Spotting the rituals of a

Cypriot Wedding Though the traditional Cypriot wedding is now a thing of the past, there are a few rituals that are still performed to this day. So next time you find yourself invited to Cypriot nuptials, try and see how many of these time-honoured traditions you can spot.

THE RED SCARF

On the day of the wedding, when friends and family would gather at the bride and groom’s home for the ‘dressing’ of the couple, musicians on the violin and lute would play traditional wedding songs while the bride and groom’s family would carry out customary rituals. One such ritual you still see to this day is the wrapping of a red scarf around the waist of the bride by her parents, maid of honour and close friends and family. This was once thought to be a symbol of her virginity. The same is then carried out at the groom’s house, where the red cloth is said to symbolize his fertility.

Early on in the festivities, at the bride’s home, many of the unmarried women will be excited to give their name to the bride to write at the bottom of her shoe. Tradition has it that the name which has not been erased from the shoe after a night of endless dancing, is the name of the next woman to be married.

TURNING WATER INTO WINE

During the church ceremony, you may notice the bride and groom

taking a small nibble break. In fact, they have been given a piece of prosforo, or ceremonial bread, which symbolizes the body of Christ as in the Holy Communion. This is then followed by a sip of Commandaria, the sweet-tasting communion wine. This harks back to the Biblical wedding of Cana in Galilee where Jesus is said to have blessed the union by converting water into wine. The common cup from which the newlyweds drink is also symbolic of the fact that from this day on, all their life’s experiences will be shared together.

THE CEREMONIAL WREATH

Throughout the second half of the wedding ceremony, you will notice two wreaths perched atop the bride and groom’s heads. These are the so-called stefana, a ceremonial wreath that was traditionally made from lemon or olive tree branches, vines, or even adorned with gold

Towards the end of the ceremony, the bride and groom will perform what is known as the Dance of Isaiah. The priest, holding the Gospel Book and the Cross, will lead the bride and groom around the marital altar three times, while the best man and maid of honour walk behind them, holding the stefana in place. Thus, the bride and groom take their first steps together as husband and wife, walking in a circle to symbolize the eternity of their union.

A TASTE OF THE SWEET LIFE

Once the ceremony ends, make sure you take one of the sugared almonds, or koufettes offered by the newlyweds. These are usually wrapped in tulle in odd, indivisible numbers which represent the couple’s unbreakable union. A small piece of red ribbon is also wrapped up with each sweet, and unmarried women are encouraged to place these under their pillow to conjure up dreams of the man they are meant to marry.

THE MONEY DANCE

One ritual that you may find more difficult to spot, is that of the money dance, as it appears to have fallen out of favour in recent years. Once the couple have officially become Mr. and Mrs., the festivities begin. In traditional Cypriot fashion, these involve a great deal of food and dancing well into the night. Midway in the celebrations, the couple may opt to perform the newlywed dance, during which guests are encouraged to pin money on their clothing as a gift, thus ensuring that the new couple begins their life happy and debt-free. While it is still customary to give money as gifts, today most people place it neatly in an envelope with a card. Though this is certainly an easier method, some might say that it is significantly less fun!

The title came at the right time when Paphos was looking for ways to be relaunched in the international travel markets and boost its image overseas. Citizens, businesses as well as visitors have benefited from the title and the projects implemented. As a destination, Paphos has changed, and the area has undergone significant upgrades not only regarding the enrichment of the locals’ quality of life but also to better the experiences of travellers. There were many paramount infrastructure developments ranging from the beachfront areas, to archaeological sites and upgrades in the Old town of Paphos. Another aspect that makes Paphos unique is the unspoiled rural areas, remote villages and the natural park of the Akamas peninsula. Whether the visitor is a nature lover or into photography or painting, the Akamas peninsula will enchant them. With its rugged coastline, alternating between rocky shores, promontories and sandy bays, it is an area of outstanding beauty, exuding an aura of timeless tranquillity, while, inland, picturesque little villages nestle in the hills. Akamas area has been identified as one of the 22 areas of endemism in Europe and one of only three European areas holding two or more restricted-range species of birds. Akamas is the last largely unspoiled coastal area remaining in Cyprus and one of the very few significant sea-turtle nesting areas in the Mediterranean. Quality Coast Awards were presented to winning destinations on September 25-27 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. Quality Coast is the largest international certification programme for sustainable tourism destinations. Since 2007, more than 125 tourist destinations in 23 countries have been selected for awards, including coastal towns, resorts and islands.

Furthermore, Papos has secured a place in the list of Top100 Green Destinations thus Paphos has remained a top, popular destination for visitors that wish to experience areas of immense natural beauty, picturesque beaches and rare vegetation, which are abundant in the whole region. Controversy often surrounds the protection of the sea turtles at Lara Beach. What efforts are being made to ensure the on-going safety of this endangered species? This has been another encouraging year for turtles, with the number of nests reaching 1,600 so far. The number is still growing but it already far exceeds last year’s 1,100. This is due to the work the conservationists have done 20 to 30 years ago as this is how long it takes the endangered Loggerhead and Green turtle (Cheloniamydas) to reproduce.

Paphos is the most soughtafter place for a romantic getaway in Cyprus. One of the reasons for the success is that the nesting grounds are now protected from foxes, as cages are placed around them. Two large turtle habitats at Lara and Toxeftra beaches have also been protected since 1989 and are designated Natura 2000 Sites, whereas in the past visitors would confuse and disturb the turtles by camping and lighting fires. In addition to these, in March this year, a 24-hour hotline was made available for those who find injured, sick, or dead sea turtles by the Oceanic Institute of the University of Cyprus to help improve the reptiles’ management and protection.

When it comes to our contribution as the Board of Tourism, we do promote the area of Lara and the exceptional experiences that it offers but we always advise the locals and visitors to enjoy what the area has to offer but maintain utmost respect for the environment as their priority during their visit. What is the state of the Paphos to Polis road? How do you think this will impact tourism in the Akamas region? The Paphos-Polis road was the first highway project in Cyprus, which was planned to be developed through the Design, Build, Finance and Operate method. It was envisioned that the award and execution of this project by the above-mentioned method will provide a highquality motorway of a European standards, which will serve the growing traffic safely and effectively. However due to several barriers and lack of funds the government had announced that the road would not be built but have now agreed that improvements to the existing road were necessary to modernise it and increase safety. The plans are now on track to enhance the road network into a safer and more comfortable network, which will contribute in the economic and social development of the whole area and discourage depopulation of the countryside. Specifically, the Paphos-Polis improvement plan has been developed in accordance with the following key objectives: • Environment: to reduce the impact on the built and natural environment and lessen the adverse impacts on people through design and effective management of the network. • Safety: to improve safety for all users within the road corridor and reduce the risk of accidents. • Economy: to support sustainable economic activity along the road corridor, reducing delays and improving journey time reliability. • Accessibility: to provide improved access to holiday resorts and also to employment areas. Works are expected to start early next year and upon completion it is expected to have a significant impact on the development of the Paphos region and more specifically to improve the accessibility and therefore the economic and tourist prospects of the Paphos – Polis region.

HOME GARDENING; AS SWEET AS IT GETS

This heirloom variety is popular across Europe, mainly for its juicy flesh, very few seeds, and distinct rich taste that is a perfect blend of tartness with a touch of sweetness.

There is something about the flavour of homegrown fruit and vegetables that is second to none, they just taste better. Growing your own produce is another way of eating healthier too. Nurturing a garden is also a great opportunity to spend more time in nature, enjoying the gorgeous sunshine and fresh air. Since being outdoors has been linked to feeling happier and less stressed, what better reason do you need to get started and create the garden of your dreams!

Mediterranean fruits have in part the radiant cloud-free days of that climate to thank for their sweetness. Sunshine together with leaf area account for the level of sugar in a tomato.

Taking only 90 days to mature, Marmande tomatoes make for a relatively quick and easy vegetable to grow in your garden. They thrive in the outdoors when placed in a sunny position and are fairly low maintenance.

GROWING YOUR OWN MARMANDE TOMATOES

Trust these tomato growing tips, straight form the professionals of Aphrodite Hills Resort Gardens & Landscaping Team: 1

Give them space: be sure to give the seedlings plenty of room to branch out in their pots. Transplant tomato seedlings into their own individual 4-inch pots shortly after they get their first set of true leaves.

Give them light: Provide them with enough natural light. Keep the young plants only a couple of inches from fluorescent grow lights. When they are ready to be planted outside, choose the sunniest part of your vegetable garden to plant them in.

Give them mulch: If you are not going to leave plastic mulch on the soil, wait until after the ground has had a chance to warm up. Once temperatures remain warm, you can add a layer of mulch to retain moisture.

Give them health: When your tomato plants reach about 3 ft. tall, remove the leaves from the bottom 1 ft. of stem to keep fungal diseases from taking hold.

Give them pruning: Remove suckers that develop in the crotch joint of two branches. They won’t bear fruit. You can thin out a few leaves to allow the sun to reach the ripening fruit but… don’t overdo it.

Give them water: Water deeply and regularly while the fruits are developing. Ensure your plants get at least 1 inch of water per week, but during hot dry days, they may need more.

Give them air: Tomato plants need to move and sway in the breeze, to develop strong stems. That happens naturally outdoors, but if you start to grow your seedlings inside, you will need to provide air circulation. Give them heat: They will start to grow if the soil and air temperatures remain warm. Cover the planting area with black or red plastic a couple of weeks before you intend to plant. Give them depth: Plant your tomato plants deeper than they come

in the pot, all the way up to the top few leaves. They will be able to develop roots all along their stems.

YOU NEED TO KNOW:

• Sowing of the seeds needs to take place between February to April, and transplanting from April to May. • Germination time takes anything between 9 days to just over two weeks. • There should be a space of 40-75 cm between the plants.

Theo-Mass Lexileictous: Art’s First Superhero

Since 2011, Cypriot media-artist Alexis Themistocleous, who goes by the alias Theo-Mass Lexileictous, has been methodically infiltrating the art world, using money, fashion and the media as his superpowers. His ‘creative attacks’ have been taking the world by storm, from London and Vienna to Los Angeles and New York.

A SUPERHERO IS BORN

Alexis Themistocleous’ alter-ego is described as a superhero who, having escaped from the confines of his comic book, acts without sense or logic as to what is deemed acceptable in real life. The storyline of this unique superhero morphed from an early exhibition at the Morfi Gallery in Limassol into an entire narrative entitled ‘A Superhero is Born.’ Theo-Mass makes use of elaborately outrageous garments, headpieces and props to create each episode of his story. The first episode in Theo-Mass’s storyline was titled ‘My Power Is Beyond Your Understanding,’ which was an exploration of his superhero’s powers. He printed his own ‘Theo-Mass dollars,’ began cultivating connections with the global fashion world and collaborating with designers and artists working in the industry, and finally, published his own newspaper, ‘Theo-Mass Times,’ thus completing the trifecta of money, fashion, and the media.

The project garnered wide acclaim, as the artist/ superhero made appearances in several public spaces across the world. The project garnered wide acclaim, as the artist/superhero made appearances in several public spaces across the world, from Trafalgar Square and Oxford Street to Times Square and Avenue des Champs-Élysées. This became the start of the second Theo-Mass episode, ‘My Insanity Will Become your Imagination World Tour,’ that lasted four months.

#POSTDIGITALISM

Since then, this busy superhero has been penetrating the art world with his unique concepts. A solo exhibition in Limassol, entitled #POSTDIGITALISM studied the evolution of the digital entering the physical, and what happens when we extract the digital world from screen to reality. He also took this concept with him to Vienna for a unique exhibition entitled ‘Faceless,’ while at the same time working on the next episode of his superhero story. Theo-Mass has also collaborated with designers and photographers around the world, including a collaboration with Yohji Yamamoto for the Adidas Y-3 FW/17-18 collection presented during Paris Fashion Week.

When he’s not wearing his otherworldly costumes as alter-ego TheoMass, Alexis Themistocleous spends his time at the concept store ‘The Shopkeeper & Co.’ he founded almost 3 years ago. This unique shop is an independent, creatively-driven concept store located in the heart of Limassol, which offers a selection of innovative books on art, fashion, photography, architecture, design and culinary arts. GDPR | KEY CHANGES

The General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 AND ITS KEY CHANGES

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) imposes a number of enhanced obligations on data processors and data controllers, with which businesses shall comply. Failure to be in compliance with the GDPR could lead to fines up to 4% of the annual worldwide turnover or €20 million, whichever is higher.

The GDPR increases the territorial scope of the applicable data protection law and applies not only to controllers but also to processors. “Data controller‟ refers to a person or organisation that decides how and why personal data is processed whereas “data processor” concerns any person or organisation (not employee of the data controller) that process personal data on behalf of the data controller. My ideal breakdown of activities is strength training, cardio, and sweet rest: I love going into workouts with my very own set of goals and expectations. In a spacious 140m2 fully-equipped Gym at the Retreat Spa by Atlantica, I can enjoy the serenity of yoga or the aggression of boxing. The multipurpose Aerobics Studio offers a wide variety of fitness classes whilst the external garden terraces in front of Aerobics Studio offer a tranquil environment and excellent views. It's all about having good fitness habits and I just can’t resist the activity opportunities at the Resort.

Local gastronomy is a fascinating blend of flavours that have been heavily influenced by the myriad of cultures that have passed through here, and the island’s close vicinity to the Middle East. While much of the cuisine today closely resembles many of the dishes that you would find in Greece, there are some foods unique to Cyprus you need to try.

HALLOUMI

Arguably one of the most famous food products in Cyprus and abroad, halloumi is a mild flavoured cheese made of a mixture of goats and sheep milk. Despite its distinct rubbery texture and salty taste, halloumi has become a firm in many restaurant kitchens across the globe, popping up in a range of dishes. It is often served grilled or fried, and sometimes cold together with some crispy, cold watermelon.

SIEFTALIA

This unique Cypriot delicacy is like sausage and commonly served with Cypriot-style souvlaki. Sieftalia are made of minced meat (pork or lamb) wrapped in caul fat, flavoured with a mix of herbs and onions, and then usually grilled. The taste is quite unlike any sausage you’ve probably ever tried, and the texture is beautifully juicy and soft.

There are some foods unique to Cyprus you need to try. THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE

Akrotiri Peninsula has some of the most diverse wetland habitats in Cyprus. The region is home to more than 300 species of birds, 800 species of plants, a local species of endemic snail which is not located anywhere else in the world, and sea turtles which lay their eggs on the coasts of the region.

CONGREGATIONS OF VARIED SPECIES OF BIRDS

So diverse are the wetlands of Akrotiri that this, combined with its size, attracts a great number of different flocks of water birds in the spring and winter months. In fact, it is said that approximately 20,000 birds may be found at Akrotiri Salt Lake at any one time.

MARINE TURTLES AND PLANT LIFE

Aside from bird species, breeding grounds for two marine turtle species can be found in the western part of Akrotiri Peninsula, namely the Loggerhead Caretta Caretta and the green turtle Chelonia Mydas which is said to be endangered. Furthermore, some 800 indigenous plant species can also be found on the peninsula.

EONS OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY

Akrotiri has a history that goes back thousands of years. In fact, it was here that the earliest evidence of human activity was unearthed, including a pre-neolithic hunter-gatherers’ refuge called Aetokremmos (Cliff of the Eagles). Findings in the area included approximately 500 pigmy hippo bones, a deer, 3 pigmy elephants and some other animals.

Ancient abandoned village sites also dot the peninsula. Pottery finds here hint that these sites were occupied from c.300-600AD. Late Greek and early Roman type chamber tombs were also discovered on the peninsula’s southern cliffs dating back to approximately 200BC-200AD, as well as cist graves originating from Roman and Byzantine periods (some 200600AD).

EXCAVATIONS

There are also several activities taking place in the area such as an excavation in Katalymata ton Plakoton, which has uncovered a very important church. Furthermore, an old harbour is also being excavated on the region’s south coast. You should be able to visit several of these locations by car provided they are situated outside of the SBA zone.

CULTURE AND COMMUNITY EXCITING DISCOVERIES SUCH AS TOMBS, VILLAGES AND GRAVES

Akrotiri is also home to many different archaeological sites, with relics from the Roman and Hellenistic periods being discovered. This includes more than 1,500 sarcophagi and tombs. Other discoveries have also been made, originating from the Byzantine, Roman and Early Christian eras along with several monuments from more recent times. According to the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre, “typical examples are the Lamnia archaeological site from the Hellenistic period, the Monastery of Saint Nicolas of the Cats dated from the early Byzantine period, Saint Demetrianos, a chapel from the 12th century, and Panagia Galaktotrofousa which is a unique building dating, once again, to the 12th century.” © V. Akrotiri village has some 870 residents working in Limassol, in the SBA or engaged in farming activities such as cattle farming. Many members of the community also partake in basketry, a traditional form of craftsmanship stemming back many years. Using various species of grass found in Akrotiri, these village residents are able to create a variety of different products such as small baskets to hold bread or cheese. Basketry is so entwined in the history of the village that the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre has the preservation of this art as one of its core objectives. This is why the Centre arranges basketry courses and encourages visits to the village, so people can watch basket weaving live. The Centre also engages in partner programmes to promote, revive and consequently preserve the craft.

Chris Wood was an avid football player until injuring a knee at age 14 and turned to golf. He made his long-awaited breakthrough in spectacular style at the 2013 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. After successful 2015 and 2016 seasons, Chris went on to represent Team Europe in the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine. This has been an amazing comeback after a five-month layoff over the winter of 2014 with a broken hand, sustained while playing… tennis.

Who got you started in golf and where did you play as an amateur? My father had a major role to play in getting me started on the game of golf. He is a 2-handicap golfer so he was a brilliant source of inspiration and offered great guidance. We started playing together many years ago and continue to enjoy the game at Ashton golf club. What aspect of the game got you hooked on it and do you still love playing the game? Absolutely! My love for playing golf is as strong today as it has ever been. Watching yourself improve over time and getting your handicap down – it’s what drives you to constantly push yourself.

What has been the highlight of your golf career as an amateur and as a professional? Winning the silver medal at the Open Championship in Birkdale was certainly the highlight of my amateur career. As a professional, victory at the PGA Championship and playing the Ryder Cup has been an unbelievable thing to experience.

You've been on tour for several years now, who are your friends out there and who do you tend to practice with? I get on with pretty much everyone but I am probably closest to David Horsey and Joost Luiten.

Why is playing in the Ryder Cup so special and different? Obviously at Hazeltine the US Team were victorious but for you what was the best memory of that week? Just being in a team environment again was incredible because you don’t get that chance as a professional. The atmosphere was electric! Winning a point with Justin Rose was amazing but to single out one moment is tough – the whole experience was just so good, that I want to do it again and win this time

Tell us something about them we don't know! Tough one that! Both just a great laugh.

Was the pressure of playing for a team different to the pressure you feel coming down the stretch in a normal Tour event? Yes, definitely! Playing for others is different. We are usually under pressure when we are playing well, as well as when leading a tournament, and so forth. Here, however, there’s pressure whether you’re playing well or not. Thankfully, I handled it all well. What advice would you give to new golfers taking up the game,

Who do you feel are the next superstars of golf in Europe? A couple of guys who have just come off the Challenge Tour have real potential, namely Tapio Pulkannen and Erik Van Rooyen. Discover Cyprus

Ancient life has been beautifully preserved in the architecture of many buildings, monuments and other ancient remains, enabling one to get a sense of what living here used to be like. This has never been more evident than in the city of Paphos. The entire city of Paphos has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

TOMBS OF THE KINGS

You will find several UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Cyprus, one of which is the Tombs of the Kings located in the city of Paphos, just a short drive away from Aphrodite Hills Resort. This ancient necropolis houses 7 excavated underground tombs and chambers. It wasn’t used by royalty as its name would suggest, but by people living in the area between 3BC – 3AD, amid the Hellenistic and Roman era. It was high ranking officials and other members of the aristocracy that were buried in the tombs, not kings.

EGYPTIAN INFLUENCE

Their similarity to tombs found in Alexandria showcases the close ties between the regions during the Hellenistic period. In many of the tombs, you will find niches in the wall where the bodies were stored. One of the more striking tombs is No. 3 which is comprised of an atrium (below the ground) surrounded by columns.

As far as other UNESCO Heritage Sites around the globe, Petra, the infamous sandstone city located in Jordan, shares some very significant similarities to the Tombs of the Kings. Built by renowned master builders, the Nabataeans, in the 3rd century BC, Petra is home to more than 40 tombs. Despite an earthquake in the city in 555 AD, many of the structures that make Petra an archaeological and architectural dream remained intact, such as the Treasury, the Street of Facades (comprised of more than 40 tombs), the Royal Tombs, and more.
