The Lanitis family always had a vision – to build a golf resort of international acclaim that could stand its own among the best in the world. It was a dream which began in the 1970s and which eventually experienced its first breath of life in the 1990s when work on this massive project was initiated. And this was no ordinary project to say the least as the challenges that were faced were not only those relating to the

construction of the actual resort but also those associated to the historical significance of the land on which the golf course, and subsequently the entire resort was to be built. The Lanitis family had and still holds great respect for the history that is entrenched into the grounds on which Aphrodite Hills Resort and Hotel are located. For it is a history that is made up of a thousand legendary tales, most notably the story of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, as it’s here that many say she was born.

When it all began After years of waiting to obtain regulatory approval to draw water from the grounds, the Lanitis family was finally able to start on the construction of the golf course.

Construction of the hotel begins Construction of Aphrodite Hills Hotel began in early 2000 after all necessary approvals for building works had been granted.

Commencing in 1995, the design of the Masterplan and golf course was the brainchild of the Master Planners SASAKI Associates, Inc., in collaboration with Cabell Robinson, acclaimed Golf Course Architect and Designer, with much attention being given to the ecological impact that the course would have on the area.

WATG Design Architects were the architectural firm responsible for the hotel’s innovative design, incorporating the essence and history of the surrounding landscape, while meeting international standards. As with the golf course, a lot of care was taken to ensure that minimal impact was made on the environment. The land at that time was filled with a massive variety of trees native to the region, including olive trees, carob trees and pine trees. While many of these had to be removed in order to make way for construction, these were all subsequently replanted.

Real estate development commences The Resort’s private residences, made up of a wide selection of contemporary luxury villas and apartments, have been designed by a number of innovative local and international architectural firms. Adhering to the specifications of an Aphrodite Hills architectural bible that was created in the process of this real estate project, the properties were built in a way that exteriors blend into the landscape seamlessly, with natural earthy colours that complement the natural surrounding environment. The architectural style of the properties was also designed in a way that respected the historical village architecture of the location and while the interiors were given a contemporary twist, the use of indigenous materials have seen a natural look and feel being retained.

Golf Course completed By October 2002, construction of the Aphrodite Hills Golf Course and also the Club House, was completed and became operational. Spreading out over 500,000 square meters, this 18-hole visually spectacular championship Golf course is built on two plateaux, separated by a dramatic ravine, and boasting spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea. Construction of the Resort roads was also completed in this year.

Commercial elements completed In 2005, all commercial elements of the resort were finalised. Aphrodite Hills Hotel opened in March of this year and very quickly became a luxury lifestyle haven for world travellers.

Aphrodite Hills Villas Aphrodite Hills Resort is still evolving. Whilst the construction of a substantial percentage of the properties has been completed, there is still a number of world-class villas and apartments that are currently being built as part of the resortâ€™s new real estate projects.

Once upon a time... … at the hill of myths and history

A mythological dispute between Persephone and Aphrodite over Adonis’s love was settled by Zeus: Handsome and beautiful Adonis was to spend one-third of every year with each goddess and the last third wherever he chose. He chose to spend two-thirds of the year with Cypriot Goddess Aphrodite, hunting together in “Rantidi Forest”… the area where Aphrodite Hills Resort is now located.

‘Lingrin tou Dhigeni’

This sanctuary boasted an important cult of the male deity of prophecy, who was also the consort of the goddess Aphrodite

When CEO George Misirlis and Project Manager Zenon Papaloizou talk about the resort, they make sure they refer to it by the name “Adonis & Aphrodite’s place” while they never forget to show their deep respect and admiration on the archaeological and historical value of the Resort’s hill. The sacred forest, on the way to Pafos At the highest point of Aphrodite Hills Resort overlooking the scenic ravine and the Mediterranean Sea, the remains of Hani are standing still wanting to remind the uniqueness of the area. Built around 1875, it was formerly an inn and a staging post for cart drivers and their animals on the trail – later a carriage road across the Rantidi Forest – from Limassol to Paphos. Furthermore and going way back through the ancient years, Rantidi Forest excavations, which lasted a decade, have located several major sites. The primary site under investigation was the sanctuary complex located on the hilltop of “Lingrin tou Dhigeni”. This sanctuary boasted an important cult of the male deity of prophecy, who was also the consort of the goddess Aphrodite. Thousands of life-sized and over life-size terracotta statue fragments have been recovered here, as well as more than 200 inscriptions in the writing system unique to Cyprus, the so-called syllabary. A large sacred forest extended from the temple boundaries to the coast. The sanctuary both contains and is surrounded by numerous tombs. This finding supports the death and resurrection associated with the ancient consort of Aphrodite & Adonis. Pithari - ancient food storage item Extensive medieval remains were located at the eastern area of the Rantidi Forest known as “Lakkos tou Frangou”. Scatters of dressed building stone and at least one partially standing wall were recorded. These areas have produced large numbers of sgraffito ware, the very fine, highly decorated glazed pottery which characterizes this time period, associated with numbers of large pithoi fragments (Pithari), indicating the storage of necessary food items. These findings correlate well with the medieval remains at the western end of the Rantidi Forest, where a small medieval settlement existed. This special area lies beneath Aphrodite Hills Hotel and Golf area. Now it’s clear where the energy of beauty, coziness and tranquility comes from, despite the luxurious aura of the Resort.

The results of the Rantidi Forest excavations indicate that the medieval activity in ancient Pafos, attested by the castle keep which is now the museum of Kouklia, and the adjacent sugar mill, extended to the south and east into the Rantidi Forest. This medieval presence at “Lakkos tou Frangou” may have been defensive in nature, guarding the only route existed at that time which accessed the Pafos region.

A glance to yesterday The construction of the Hani Villa, whilst respecting the history of the hill, is typical 19th century Cypriot village style, using local stone and timber and all 10 rooms of the existing building currently retain their own fireplace and stable that is so typical of an inn of a previous period. Outside the inn, a large stone cistern collected rainwater and close by the stone threshing floor has been carefully preserved as a testimony to a traditional way of life.

What’s On

Limassol Carnival Named ‘the coolest Carnival outside of Rio’ by none other than the CNN, the Limassol Carnival is certainly a sight to behold. It begins 10 days before Lent, on what is traditionally known as ‘Tsiknopempti,’ or ‘Stinky Thursday.’ It is the day that ‘King Carnival’ makes his entrance parade into Limassol, accompanied by the famous ‘Kantadoroi’ or serenaders singing traditional Carnival tunes. Musicians and dancers fill Limassol’s streets and squares, and parties for crazily-attired individuals are hosted across town all week. The Limassol Carnival culminates in the big Sunday Parade, a day before the start of Lent. Traditionally, the parades have an element of satire, with Carnival floats and costumed marchers in the thousands making a colorful commentary on current affairs. The day-long event takes place all along Makarios Avenue in Limassol, with revelers dancing away into the wee hours of the morning. So grab a mask and a handful of confetti and join the fun!

Cyprus Rally The Cyprus Rally is one of the longest-running events in Cyprus. First held in 1970 on a rough, uneven turf, it has since evolved into one-of-a-kind event that attracts rally enthusiasts from across the world. Now called the CNP ASFALISTIKI Cyprus Rally, it promises supreme action through its ensemble of impressive stages and world-class crews that gear up each year for this spectacular event. Sixteen fast and demanding

special stages, tallying up a total of 665km test a plethora of crews from Cyprus, Europe and Middle East. The rally is hosted in different parts of Cyprus each year, between the months of September and November, with a fun kick-off and extra special Ceremonial Finish that the whole family will enjoy. Whether you are a speed demon, a motorsport fan, or simply want to enjoy some of the lesser-known areas of the island, this festival of speed is one not to be missed!

Limassol Wine Festival The history of wine-making in Cyprus dates back to at least 2000 BC, and many great wines are said to have originated from Cypriot grapes. It is only fitting therefore, that one week during the year is dedicated to celebrating what was once known as the nectar of the Gods. Hosted annually at the end of August, the 11-day Wine Festival is held at the Limassol Municipal Gardens and attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year. The motto of the festival is ‘Drink wine, it gives you life!’. This is emblazoned on a large statue of a Cypriot village winegrower dressed in traditional garb,

standing proudly at the entrance of the Municipal Gardens as the emblem of the Wine Festival. The four major wineries in Cyprus (KEO, LOEL, ETKO and SODAP) as well as a number of small independent producers are all present at the Wine Festival, offering visitors a taste of their wares in unlimited amounts for just the price of a small souvenir glass. Visitors can enjoy traditional foods such as kebabs, smoked herring, ‘loukoumades’ and other delicacies, revel in local Cypriot songs and dance, and for an added treat, take a turn in the grape stomping barrel for a taste of old-school wine making practices.

Paphos Aphrodite Festival The Paphos Aphrodite Festival was established in 1999, with the aim of organizing and hosting international opera performances for local audiences and visitors. Held in early September, the event takes place beneath the stars at the Paphos Medieval Castle in the Kato Paphos harbor, on an open-air opera stage. This creates the perfect atmosphere for opera lovers to enjoy such great performances as Bizet’s Carmen, Verdi’s La Traviata, Puccini’s Turandot, and many more, performed by internationally acclaimed opera houses. For visitors wishing to immerse themselves completely in the opera, the Paphos

Aphrodite Festival organizers provide simultaneous surtitles of the librettos in both Greek and English during the performances. The Paphos Aphrodite Festival is the perfect way to enjoy the cooler September days and sea breeze by the Paphos Medieval Castle. International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama Since 1997, the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama has been hosting theatre companies from across the world to present ancient Greek dramas in their own languages. A distinctive cultural event with an international flair, the Festival performances bear an intense flavour from each performer’s

home country, creating a mosaic of cultures that opens up a dialogue between contemporary stages and international audiences. The performances are presented in open-air amphitheaters across Cyprus, namely the Ancient Odeon in Paphos, the Curium Ancient Theater in Limassol and the Skali Amphitheater in Nicosia, throughout the month of July every year. The Festival has recently expanded its local audiences by presenting performances with English and Greek surtitles. An event not to be missed, the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama has also been honoured with the EFFE Label 2015-2016, as one of Europe’s finest festivals.

food | village square The Village Square Restaurants by Atlantica Hotels & Resorts, is unique to the Resort for it’s a journey from garden to plate that makes every dish served at each of its eateries a contemporary coming together of local and ethnic flavours - an extraordinary taste experience like no other. “Our love for food is almost tangible in the way that it gets infused into the taste of each plate we serve”, says Head Chef, Christos Pomonis. And this is evident throughout the process of creating a unique gastronomic encounter at each of the Resort’s restaurants. A process that begins in the beautifully landscaped gardens situated in the expansive grounds of Aphrodite Hills Resort. It’s where the chefs start their day every morning, meandering among the locally grown patches of fresh herbs and spices - native to the region - selecting

those that are destined to be suffused into the eclectic dishes that abound throughout the Resort. “While we strive to give food a modern twist”, says Christos Pomonis, “retaining traditional flavour authenticity is very important to us”. And this approach extends beyond the gardens and into the kitchens of each restaurant where the flavours of fresh seasonal ingredients are enhanced through traditional cooking techniques still being used today, by chefs native to the cuisine being cooked. This culinary foray into Aphrodite Hills myriad of internationally diverse dining establishments typically starts at the Village Square, a social hub at the heart of Aphrodite Hills, where Resort residents and members of the public gather to dine at the plethora of its highly-acclaimed restaurants.

Years passed after Alexander McQueen’s untimely death at the age of 40 and the world is still enthralled with the dark and menacing vision of one of England’s most tortured fashion icons.

On February 11th, 2010, New York Fashion Week was just getting started. The glitterati of the fashion industry were all gathered in Bryant Park, when Blackberrys in the front row began to buzz in unison. Halfway across the world in London, Lee Alexander McQueen had ended his life, sending shockwaves reverberating across the ocean.

The pink sheep

The youngest of six children, Alexander McQueen, or ‘Lee,’ as he was commonly known, was born in London’s East End. He described himself as “a pink sheep in a family of black cab drivers.” With a working class background very different to that of many of his contemporaries in the fashion trade, McQueen’s star shone bright from the moment he left school at 16. He entered an apprenticeship at the highly revered Saville Row tailors Gieves and Hawkes, both masters in the technical construction of clothing. The razor sharp tailoring, which has become a trademark of the McQueen clothing lines, was learned during a later stint with theatrical costumiers Angels and Bermans.

The tempestuous relationship with Isabella Blow

Upon finishing his Masters degree in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martin’s in London, his entire MA collection was famously purchased by influential stylist Isabella Blow. Blow has been credited with discovering the young designer, convincing him to drop his first name, Lee, in favour of his “more regal” middle name, Alexander, and catapulting him to fame. The two had a turbulent, tempestuous relationship, and Blow’s suicide in 2007, not long before his own, led to him dedicating his entire spring/summer 2008 collection to her memory.

Beirut. Throughout this time, McQueen continued to grab the public’s attention with his provocative, uncompromising, and often disturbing presence in the global fashion industry. Perhaps one of his most memorable creations is the reptile-scaled lobster-claw shaped boots that became known as Armadillo boots. The 10-inch heels were made most famous by pop star Lady Gaga, one of McQueen’s biggest fans herself. As daringly provocative as the Armadillo boots were, they were also accompanied by the very real fear that with one twist of an ankle, the whole runway show could end in disaster, and McQueen would be remembered for callously putting his models in danger.

He was a pink sheep in a family of black cab drivers. Brutal imagery was echoed in McQueen’s shows throughout his career. His debut in 1995 was the highly controversial Highland Rape show. Models with matted hair, blanked out eyes, torn garments and bloodied bodies ignited fury amongst the public. In his subsequent seasons, McQueen’s shows were peppered with such imagery as rings of flames and glass boxes shattering to reveal moths fluttering around the masked face of a naked woman.

well as for the romantic and determinedly contemporary nature of his collections. However, it became inevitable that the British designer, who had been awarded the coveted Designer of the Year Award at the British Fashion Awards four times, would come to be defined by shock and violence. Despite his many accolades (McQueen also won Men’s Wear Designer of the Year award in 2004, the CFDA Award for Best International Designer in 2003, and was honoured with a CBE from Queen Elizabeth II for his services to the fashion industry), and the true talent and hard work which shone through in his designs, Alexander McQueen’s success was clearly fraught with internal struggle. Following his tragic death, many concluded that his was a narrative in which darkness would inevitably prevail. The quality of McQueen’s work was often described in superlatives. His collections combined an in-depth working knowledge of bespoke British tailoring, the fine workmanship of the French Haute Couture atelier and the impeccable finish of Italian manufacturing. However, behind it all was a troubled man who seemed to be heading towards an inevitable bleak end. It is perhaps most fitting to his legacy, therefore, that upon his death, the single item which was sold out worldwide was the McQueen scarf adorned with his trademark skull motif. A subtle reminder of a brilliant man who was ultimately engulfed by his own darkness.

To represent the spaciousness of the city, while the small fragments that surround it represent the different regions, cultures and people that will jointly contribute to this effort. The Thematic Lines of Pafos 2017 I. MYTH AND RELIGION This thematic line refers to Pafos’s cultural heritage, historical background, reflecting and placing prominence to the characteristics that gave birth to civilization and defined its evolution throughout the course of history. For one man, the journey of giving began almost 10 years ago in Kazan, Russia. What started as an interest in helping one child in need eventually grew into a fully established charity fund. The idea of giving dwells on, and having set anchor on the island of Cyprus, both Andrey and Julia Dashin stand firm in their belief in generosity and human kindness. Andrey and Julia Dashin moved to Cyprus with their children in 2012, set up a new home, established a new business and continued their vision of charity work overseas. They launched the “Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation” in April 2014 which aims to benefit the local community as a whole, with special attention given to those who are in desperate need of help.

Our goal in the Foundation is to extend a helping hand to any cause of genuine need in Cyprus.

“The ability to make a positive change, even to the life of one community, one family or one person, is and will forever be important”, the founders say. “Cyprus has greatly enriched our lives. This hospitable country impressed us immensely with its culture and locals, and we like to be involved with the people of the region including the problems they struggle with”, they added.

“My husband’s business required more of his time to be spent at his offices in Cyprus, so we took the decision to move our family home here. We quickly became enchanted with the island and like a Greek saying goes: ‘’he who loves, feels pain’’. From the beginning we were interested to help and it was not difficult to quickly learn and understand the social issues that exist in the local community. We are both passionate in what we do and so we asked around, we read a lot and we listened a great deal to what people here had to say. And what started with us helping one child with eye sight problems, grew into an established charity fund which has now set anchor in Cyprus”.

“Our goal in the Foundation is to extend a helping hand to any cause of genuine need in Cyprus without making any distinctions or discriminations. The Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation is perhaps the only foundation in Cyprus which diversifies itself by giving back to so many different organizations with different agendas, and a quick browse in our website will confirm this. Every year the foundation tries to support organizations that engage different fields: Children, Community/Culture, Education, Environment and Healthcare. Our charity action focuses on everyone living on the island, whether it is Cypriots, Russians or other ethnic or social minorities”.

Former Beatle John Lennon’s molar fetched a total of £19,000 in a London auction in 2011. Talk about an increase in the tooth fairy’s rates! The tooth had been in the family of Lennon’s former housekeeper, Dot Jarlett, to whom Lennon had given the tooth for her daughter, who was a big Beatles fan. The molar itself is too fragile to be DNA tested for confirmation that it belonged to the Beatle. Saint Catherine was one of the most important Saints in the religious culture of the Late Middle Ages, and arguably considered the most important of the virgin martyrs. Story by Elena Constantinou

Who was Saint Catherine?

She was a Christian Saint and virgin, who was martyred in the early 4th century at the hands of the pagan emperor Maxentius. According to her hagiography, she was both a princess and a noted scholar, who became a Christian around the age of fourteen, and converted hundreds of people to Christianity. She was martyred around the age of 18. St. Joan of Arc identified Catherine as one of the Saints who appeared to her and counseled her, over 1,100 years following her martyrdom.

They say…

A tradition says that angels carried her corpse to Mount Sinai. Her body was discovered around the year 800 at Mount Sinai, with hair still growing and a constant stream of healing oil issuing from her body.

The mystery of her existence

No historian mentions her nor does any witness confirm her existence until the 9th century. Given the fact that her martyr death was in 305, there is silence and mystery on everything about her which lasted for five centuries.

A A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step

The loggerheads’ first journey is the most important of their lives, as they rely on their DNA and instinct to find their way. Only if they make it this first time, will they return to the same beach after a couple of decades to lay their eggs and perpetuate their unique species. Caretta Caretta turtles are late breeders. They lay their first eggs at the age of 15, during the hot summer months. Each turtle can lay up to 80 eggs, which it then covers with sand to ensure their safety. Females return to lay eggs at intervals of 12–17 days during the nesting season, on or near the beach where they themselves hatched. After their first nesting, turtles nest every 2-5 years.

Prevailing over obstacles

The real miracle, however, is the magical hour when the eggs hatch. Once the sun has set, after a 7 week incubation period, hundreds of baby turtles burst through the sand and, depending merely on their own pure survival instincts, begin their dash towards the sea. There are countless obstacles between the little hatchlings and the start of their new marine life, and only about one in 1000 is lucky enough to survive to adulthood. Turtle hatchlings and young turtles feed on plankton, jelly fish and mollusks until their second year of life, after which they transition to small marine animals, sea urchins, and crabs.

Conservation and Protection

Cyprus was one of the first countries to legally protect Caretta Caretta turtles through national regulations. In 1978, the first seasonal hatchery was established in Lara Beach, Paphos. This is done by creating specialized cages in the areas where turtles lay their eggs to protect them before hatching. Since then, both Lara Beach and the area of Polis/Limni in Paphos were declared marine turtle reserves under the EU Natura 2000 protected area network.

The human factor

The biggest threat to marine turtles is, sadly, human disturbances. Driving on the beach can damage nests beneath the sand, whilst direct light sources near beaches can attract hatchlings which use light as a source to find the water. Bright lights, along with loud noises can also intimidate female turtles from laying their eggs on the beach, thus hindering the chances of survival of the next generation of sea turtles.

Persistent flirting might work or... not

Just before the nesting season, male loggerhead sea turtles migrate to mating grounds, which are usually located offshore from nesting beaches. They wait for females to begin courtship and mating. A male will circle a female, then approach her and bite her neck or shoulder. He will then attempt to mount her and if she accepts him, they will mate.

Only about 1 in 1000 is lucky enough to survive to adulthood. If a female does not accept the male, she covers her cloak and swims to the bottom, but a persistent male may wait until she needs air and make another attempt. Males use the long, curved claws on their forelimbs to hold on because mating may last for hours and other males often ram and bite the mating male, attempting to dislodge him. If a male is dislodged, another may quickly replace him.

Marine turtles are an ancient group of reptiles that ‘reversed’ their evolution from land to sea. This reverse process is incomplete, and though marine turtles are well adapted to marine life, they still breathe air and return to land to lay their eggs.

Buying golf equipment can be a daunting task whilst a set of irons is the most expensive single piece of golf kit someone will buy.

Honma, which describes itself as part of “golf’s aristocracy”, charges up to ¥7m ($68,000) for a set of its top of the range gold plated clubs. The $173m listing is the world’s biggest golf club manufacturer, and priced towards the higher end of its range at HK$10 a share.

Others craft shafts by hand winding carbon fabric around an iron core. The idea is to deliver a club that reflects a certain grace and elegance, but that is also capable of providing a powerful swing.

The latest Honma piece (of art) is a bag’s worth of clubs (14 in all, woods, irons and more) from its top of the line “five star” series for the price of $75,000. More than 100 craftsmen are involved in the production of each piece. Some are polishing the club heads to exact specifications,
