History of the Building
DID YOU KNOW THAT IN 1946 ATKINS HAD OFFICES IN VICTORIA? - WE ARE COMING HOME!
I had now found new offices at 158 Victoria Street, London. In the early mornings, at lunch times, and after 5.30 p.m. (predominantly) I interviewed prospective staff. It was a right time for that purpose. Young men were coming out of the Forces eagerly seeking employment, many of them graduated, some with their college courses interrupted by hostilities but nevertheless full of the newer engineering technologies developed in the brave urgency of war. There were plenty of fine young men ready for work, and it was easier to get quality then than it had been before the War. It was almost as though there was a new breed emerging from the trials of battle, filled with a new excitement so lacking in the pre-war years, in a period of no inflation and near stagnant technology. I had very soon recruited about fifty engineers, all young, all good splendid material, that could be moulded to our purpose.... I set up research teams to deal with advanced structural analysis systems, ferrous metallurgy, welding process developments, and quality maintenance (now better known as Quality Assurance). All these were important;
we were trying to advance in one leap, well beyond available practice, and indeed to re-interpret and extend available knowledge; and we needed, as our knowledge grew, to safeguard every step... In the first several months I imagine we must have talked to everyone in this country who had ever handled a welding rod, designed a welding machine, or had anything whatsoever to do with welding equipment and supplies. ...For our purpose we had to seek information from overseas, mainly Europe and the U.S.A. Germany had built a number of heavy crane-bearing industrial buildings in the l 930’s, including the well-known Hermann Goering steelworks on which Dr. Dornen had been engaged. Dornen had considerably advanced welding in Germany and I wanted to meet him and others there. Cartwright arranged for me to lead a BIOS (British Intelligence Overseas Services) team into Germany to inspect industrial buildings, welding techniques... - ‘Partners: Fifty Years of WSA & P’ Atkins, W. In 2017, we undertook a Wellbriefing survey (now Human Centred Design) across 10 UK offices including Euston Tower. This has influenced aspects of the design from the location and configuration of space we choose to the furniture layout and how we occupy spaces (results summary attached).

The Office ROOM BOOKING SYSTEM
London Nova North has been equipped with meeting room wall panels to further enhance your meeting room experience. The panels will show you all upcoming meetings for the room, give you the ability to check-in and out of your meetings, book directly from the wall panels and report faults in the room. Please see the meeting wall panel examples that follow.
1. The meeting room panels will automatically display all upcoming meetings.
2. Five minutes before your meeting to due to begin, the ‘Check-In’ button will begin to flash on the panel. A participant of the meeting must check-in on arrival to the room.
3. Once you’ve checked in, the meeting panel will turn to red to show the meeting is now in progress.
4. If your meeting finishes early, you must check-out from the meeting panel, by pressing the ‘Check-Out’ button. This will automatically shorten your meeting in Outlook and free up the meeting room for your colleagues to book.
5. You can book an ad-hoc meeting directly from the meeting panel. Simply click ‘Smartbook’ and you can book yourself a quick meeting.
6. Depending on the time slots available, a different menu may show. Simply select the time you want and click ‘Confirm’.
7. Selecting the ‘Info’ button will display the meeting room information and all room resources.
8. You can now report faults directly from the meeting room panel. Simply select a resource (in this example the phone), and select ‘Yes’.

We are putting together a SharePoint site as a centralised repository for information relating to room booking. For more information please check periodically our SharePoint site: https://atkins.sharepoint.com/sites/ ResourceBookingPanels/default.aspx

The Office DIGITAL SIGN IN
We will be introducing an electronic visitor sign in to streamline the visitor process. When a visitor arrives, they will be asked to sign in at reception via one of three iPads at which point the system will e-mail the meeting co-ordinator to say the visitor has arrived. For this to work successfully it is important that visitors are registered in the system. To do this you simply need to add “meeting@proxyclick.com” as an additional attendee to any meeting where you expect a visitor to site.
