This year’s program focuses on two key themes. The first, The Power of Networks: Strengthening Professional Connections in Maritime, explores how relationships and mentorship can shape careers and drive innovation. Panelists Maryanne Richards, director of career services at Massachusetts Maritime Academy; and Maggie Moon, chief marketing officer at Glosten; will discuss their own journeys and how meaningful professional networks have helped them navigate the challenges and opportunities of maritime life.

he Women in Maritime Summit is returning this year to the International WorkBoat Show (IWBS), offering an afternoon of learning, collaboration, and networking for women and allies from across the maritime industry. Few industries are feeling the pull of transformation quite like maritime. Once largely perceived as distant trends, advances in digital technologies, regulatory-driven sustainability efforts, and the evolution of the modern workforce are now active forces redefining what it means to work at sea and ashore. “The summit offers a chance to look at how the maritime industry is changing through the lens of female experience, leadership, and inclusion,” said Jessica Galli, conference manager for the IWBS. “It’s designed as a place to connect, share stories, and discuss the future.” Women continue to be underrepresented in the predominantly male maritime industry,

a persistent issue that the 2024 Women in Maritime Summit sought to address. “We rarely see women in the C-suite, especially in the inland industry,” said Kasey Eckstein, president of Eckstein Trade and Transport, who moderated the session. “When women look at entering this industry, they want to see a path forward, but without role models, it’s hard to envision that path.” But foundational change is underway. “We’re seeing more women in our operations and as port captains, and it’s changing the company culture,” said Taylor Dickerson, vice president of the project management office at Kirby Corp., during last year’s event. Now in its second year, the 2025 Women in Maritime Summit, sponsored by Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Fairwater, introduces an all-new interactive format designed to foster deeper dialogue and stronger connections, Galli said. The summit will feature two mini sessions with industry leaders, each followed by a brief roundtable discussion to explore the topic in greater depth among peers. “The small

The second session, Innovation at Sea and Ashore: Maritime Solutions for a Changing World, turns to the future with panelists Anastasija Kuprijanova, director of business development at Carbon Ridge; and Eileen Tausch, electrification program manager at Fleetzero. As the sector embraces new technologies and adapts to environmental pressures, the conversation will focus on how innovation is transforming the way maritime professionals work, think, and lead. This session also encourages attendees to consider how fresh perspectives — especially from women and emerging talent — are shaping the next generation of maritime solutions. The summit’s format blends professional insight with open dialogue, its organizers said, noting that attendees will be able to listen, talk, and network over a buffet lunch. “We hope that the relaxed setting encourages honest conversation, whether it’s about leadership, work-life balance, or the evolving definition of success in maritime.”

he annual Maritime Breakfast at this year’s International WorkBoat Show will focus on the theme “U.S. Shipbuilding: Progress, Workforce, and the Path Ahead.” Sponsored by Endress & Hauser, the event will bring together executives from across the commercial and defense shipbuilding sectors to discuss how new investments, policies, and partnerships are reshaping the U.S. maritime industrial base. Moderated by Guillermo Calderon Martinez, business development manager for North America at the American Bureau of Shipping, the session will feature a lineup of leaders representing shipyards, operators, and maritime financiers.

As the U.S. works to strengthen its domestic shipbuilding industry, the discussion will address how federal grants, tax incentives, and targeted public-private investments are fueling new growth. While national defense remains a central focus, panelists are expected to highlight how commercial shipbuilding stands to benefit from the same industrial momentum. The conversation will cover the number of vessels currently under construction, recent yard expansions, and workforce development efforts that have gained traction over the past year. Panelists will also share forward-looking insights on projects in the pipeline and the challenges that remain, ranging from supply chain constraints to sustaining skilled labor pipelines across regions. The Maritime Breakfast remains one of the show’s most anticipated gatherings, offering a candid look at the state of the industry among

Maritime Throwdown is back at the WorkBoat Show For each obstacle and challenge that is incorporated into the Maritime Throwdown, Capt. Kenny Brown has experienced in a firsthand situation on the water. “The evolution of the MTD over the years has transformed it from a simple speed-based competition to a scoring system that highlights specific skillsets.”

Competition winners at IWBS will secure automatic entry into the finals, set to take place at the Inland Marine Expo in Nashville, Tenn., in May 2026. There, a substantial $10,000 prize will be split among the top three winners.

he International WorkBoat Show (IWBS) is thrilled to announce the return of the Maritime Throwdown (MTD). MTD founder, Capt. Kenny Brown, discussed the unique approach of the competition with WorkBoat, offering a firsthand look at what IWBS attendees can expect at this year’s event. “Maritime Throwdown isn’t just about throwing lines; it’s about mastering the skills necessary to handle lines efficiently,” Brown said. “Our focus spans far beyond simple throws of varying distances. We delve into intricate aspects such as single- and double-part configurations, high and low tie-offs, and even introduce challenges with different obstacles. What began as a technical pursuit has evolved into a captivating sport that incorporates skillsets and promotes adherence to safety protocols.” Within the first three years of the Maritime Throwdown, Brown said he uncovered a noticeable void in skills within the industry.

“It struck me that many individuals lack these fundamental skills. The emphasis often rests on self-proclaimed competence rather than objective assessment of abilities,” said Brown. A staple throw entails a vertical kevel that requires a left-handed lob. Capt. Brown noted “the vertical kevel whoops everybody’s tail.” Overtime, Brown increased the event standards to eliminate subjective judging, and he emphasized certain criteria such as hand and foot placements, line awareness, and disqualifying participants who inadvertently step off the platform. When: December 3-5, 2025 What: Vessel crew contestants will test their skills, physical and mental strength, and endurance. How: Contestants will compete in an obstacle course, performing challenges such as coiling and lifting heavy lines, carrying, rigging, throwing, and securing lines — all while emphasizing safety.

“The focus isn’t sheer strength, but safety and technique. We have a pool of some of the most adept line handlers within the industry, and none of them regard the course as anything less than challenging,” he said. “We’re offering a significant prize of $10,000, even though the farthest throw spans merely ten feet. The real challenge lies in executing a ten-foot, two-part throw that lands within a two-inch gap,” Brown said. The Maritime Throwdown challenge will be open to all IWBS exhibitors and attendees regardless of background or skill level.
