A little bit of history
“A big WELCOME and enjoy”
Stroud is a historic market town located in Gloucestershire, England. Its history is rich and diverse, spanning centuries of development and cultural change. This article will provide a concise overview of the history of Stroud. Stroud’s early history can be traced back to Roman times when it was a small settlement known as “Stred.” The name “Stroud” is believed to have originated from the Old English word “strod,” meaning “marshy ground,” which described the landscape of the area. During the medieval period, Stroud developed into a market town, benefiting from its location on the important trade route between Gloucester and Bristol. In 1258, Stroud was granted a market charter, formalizing its role as a center of commerce. The town’s growth was further catalyzed during the Industrial Revolution. Stroud became a hub for the booming textile industry, particularly known for its production of high-quality woolen cloth. The Stroudwater Navigation, a canal built in the 18th century, connected Stroud to the Severn Estuary, making the transportation of goods much easier and facilitating industrial expansion. This period of industrialization brought significant wealth and population growth to the town.

Why not enjoy a night at one of the great theatres spotted around Stroud!
Cotswold Playhouse The Cotswold Playhouse is the building, but it is owned and managed by The Cotswold Players, a registered charity, which is managed by a board of trustees. Our constitution can be found here. As well as a modern, fully equipped stage and auditorium, our theatre offers multiple changing rooms, storage for our set, costumes and props, a welcoming bar and lounge, and even a dance studio. We typically stage five or six productions of our own each year, from classics to musicals, drama to pantomime. And we increasingly take our productions out into the community: we have recently performed at the Stroud Theatre Festival, the Stroud Shakespeare Festival, St Laurence Church and Stroud Brewery. We also make the facilities available to visiting companies, schools, dance classes, toddler groups and many more. Everything is run by volunteers, so we are always keen to welcome new members. Pole Fitness is an extension of pole dancing that uses the pole to its maximum potential as a versatile piece of fitness equipment. It works the whole body, improving muscle tone, flexibility, coordination, posture as well as upper body and core strength. You’ll be amazed at the variety of exercises you can do with a pole, which is similar to exercises you might do in the gym but using your own body weight for resistance. From chin-ups to crunches to working your arms and abs and climbing to body holds for your legs and bums - you can work it all on a pole.
