Local student receives FRS scholarship
As a high school freshman, Victor McBride didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life. Then a friend encouraged him to try Junior ROTC, where he found inspiration. After four years with JROTC, Victor earned scholarships and plans to attend Virginia Military Institute with the goal of becoming a U.S. Army surgeon.
“The JROTC changed my life for the better,” the 2023 Warren County High School graduate says.
Now, in addition to JROTC scholarships, Victor has been awarded a prestigious Foundation for Rural Service scholarship, sponsored by NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association. Out of over 1,100 applicants, he was chosen as one of only 42 recipients nationwide.
As a member of NTCA, Ben Lomand Connect encourages the children of all their members to apply for the available scholarships and youth programs through the cooperative and NTCA.
“We are proud to present a $2,500 check to Victor on behalf of the NTCA,” Ben Lomand CEO Greg Smartt says. “It’s such an honor to be selected for the FRS scholarship, and we are very proud that someone with Victor’s work ethic and desire to serve was chosen for this honor.”
At Warren County High School, Victor served as the command sergeant major of the Pioneer Battalion of the Junior ROTC program, the male team commander for the Raider team and tech commander of the color guard team.
Victor is the son of Lisa Marie McBride.
“I decided I wanted to attend Virginia Military Institute because it looks like the college that posed the greatest challenge and would provide me with the courage and determination I will need through the rigorous process of medical school and residency,” Victor says. “I want to thank everyone who has supported me as I pursue something positive to hopefully help others.”
The FRS annually awards scholarships to an exceptional group of rural students for their first year of college or vocational school. All applicants require sponsorship by an NTCA member company, such as Ben Lomand Connect, to be eligible.
FRS has awarded over $1 million in scholarships since its inception, empowering students in rural areas throughout the country to advance their communities with invaluable skills and experiences.
