Word’s Worth From the SGA External Vice President

Despite every article I read to prepare me for college in the United States, I was quite unprepared for the academic and social adjustments I had to make in the Red Raider community. Through my everyday contacts, I realized that as soon as I had begun my college experience, I was already on my way out to begin my journey into the real world. This is probably the same thing running through your mind. College is truly the best time of your life. Everything you do and touch is a possible life lesson. Hence, I encourage you to seize the moments and live your life with no regrets in college. Texas Tech, an amazing institution with over 40,000 students, has something for each and every single one of you. However, your External Vice President time here is limited. YOU make up the backbone of Texas Tech University. Never forget that this institution is nothing without what you offer, so treat every opportunity like it’s your last. As you embrace the return to normalcy, I encourage you to get involved, learn, and love. By doing this, you are striving for honor in everything and making your university extremely proud. Beyond it all, I implore you to take your time and breathe. The start of your experience is as overwhelming as the end, so there is no need to rush. If there is one thing the pandemic taught us is that time is precious and every moment counts. Make sure you use your moments to ignite your passions, whatever they may be. There is no time greater than now to make your mistakes. As we all know, the greatest learning occurs with the biggest setbacks. If there is one thing Texas Tech will reiterate to you as it has to me, it is that no man is an island. Everyone wants to see you succeed and will do everything to make sure you do. This is your fresh start – your time to speak up and utilize all the resources available to you to connect your dots toward your future – so take advantage of it. 2020 taught us to embrace the unexpected, shed light on the difficult conversations, and look after one another. As we begin the new academic year, I encourage you to take what you learned as the start to our new normalcy. You should accept the uncomfortable conversations and the possibility of seeing people wear masks during flu season, but as we’ve grown over the year, I hope we can continue moving in the right direction. Red Raiders, I am beyond honored you chose Texas Tech, and I cannot wait to serve you! We are all rooting for you and cannot wait to see all you live to accomplish! Wreck ‘em, Ebere Nwachukwu

It’s winter break. You and a bunch of your friends head north to Colorado to do a little skiing, a little partying, to kick back and relax. And since Colorado has legalized marijuana for recreational as well as medicinal use, you’re looking forward to doing that as well, knowing you won’t have to worry about being caught. So far, so good. You don’t even have to smoke it. Marijuana products range from brownies and chocolate bars to drinks and gumdrops, all containing THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, the ingredient in marijuana that generates its high. A company in Canada has even figured out how to brew beer from the marijuana plant, complete with a vastly accelerated high beyond what plain old alcohol can provide. So you stock up, figuring you’ll bring some back for later. A few days later, you’re headed back to campus, and you cross the state line into Texas. You 4

hear the blip of a siren and look in the rearview mirror. The officer signals you to pull over. In Texas, marijuana possession is not just illegal but potentially a felony offense. The cop asks you where you’re coming from. “Telluride,” you say. “We were doing some skiing.” As he scans your license, you add, “We’re heading back to Texas Tech.” He studies you a moment before peering through your car window into the backseat. He spies a candy bar wrapper on the floor. “Everyone, out of the car,” he orders. You feel the first prickle of apprehension. He reaches in for the wrapper and immediately sees it contains THC. “I’m searching your vehicle for drugs,” he says. You and your friends exchange nervous glances. When the search turns up a selection of chocolate bars and gummy bears, you’re immediately placed under arrest. “But I bought it in Colorado,” you protest.

Well, guess what? Texas doesn’t care that you bought it legally. It’s illegal here. Texas police often single out vehicles coming in from other states. You’re an even more prominent target if your car is out of state and licensed where marijuana has been legalized, even if only for medicinal reasons. Texas doesn’t care if you have it on you for medicinal purposes. I’ve had clients who have been stopped for driving 76 mph in a 75-mph zone, or sometimes for no reason at all beyond the fact that they were coming from Colorado. Such profiling is indeed unfair, but unfairness doesn’t make for a legitimate criminal defense. Texas has taken a few baby steps forward in legalizing the use of CBD cannabis oil, which is low in THC. But it’s legal only for the treatment of severe epileptic seizures that haven’t responded to traditional medication and certain

Cutting back costs on your wedding might save you more than just money. A study by two economic professors at Emory University, Andrew Francis and Hugo Mialon, found that couples who spend less on their wedding are more likely to have longer-lasting marriages than those who have a more expensive wedding. More specifically, the study shows that couples who spend $20,000 or more on their wedding have a 1.6 times higher risk of divorce, and those who spend $1,000 or less have a significantly decreased likelihood of divorce. According to a wedding website, The Knot, the average wedding cost was $34,000 in 2018. Although authors of the study did not give an explanation for the results, they proposed that weddingrelated debt might cause stress on the couple, resulting in an unhappy marriage. The study also found that couples

who have more guests at their wedding, and go on a honeymoon, tend to stay married longer. Whether you spend a lot or a little, it is important to remember the purpose of the wedding, which is to celebrate the beginning of two lives coming together in marriage. Associated with higher chance of divorce: • Greater differences in age and education between the husband and wife • Couples who say their partner’s looks were important in the decision to marry • Higher wedding expenses Associated with lower chance of divorce: • Relatively high household income • Regularly attending religious services • The couple having a child with each other • High wedding attendance • Going on a honeymoon • Lower wedding expenses

College in a nutshell:

f o t ou By Michelle Bless Good grades, sleep, social life - you only get two. This phrase is college in a nutshell. As college students, we spend a lot of time in class doing homework, completing projects, studying for exams, working several days a week to pay the bills, exercising at the rec, and of course, spending free time doing whatever we want with friends. To do all that, we have to schedule and plan. We can’t just say we’re going to meet at Charley B’s sometime this week and expect everyone to magically show up at the right time and the right table. So if we need to plan everything we do to manage our lives, how come most people don’t plan a time to go to sleep? Doctors say that the ideal amount of sleep for an adult is 8 hours. This might not seem doable all the time in college. A lot of students go the whole week sleeping 4 hours a night until Saturday when they sleep away half the day. To combat exhaustion during the school day and work shift, most students will drink coffee. I know I always have coffee in my hand when I walk into morning classes. But as helpful as coffee is, irresponsible drinking can be dangerous. Caffeine is a stimulant. It blocks your brain from receiving adenosine, the neurotransmitter which causes fatigue. While this is a great short-term solution to sleepiness, it means all the adenosine your body produced over the last few hours will hit you all at once when the caffeine wears off. A common solution is to keep drinking coffee, or some other caffeinated beverage. But caffeine is a diuretic, causing you to need to urinate. Because of this, your body loses water faster while you’re drinking coffee. Most people will not think to drink water along with their coffee, but dehydration causes headaches and drowsiness. At this point, it can be tempting to go back to the coffee, thinking you need more to stay awake. In reality, you need water and sleep. The only way to actually get rid of the adenosine running to your brain is to sleep it off. We have to plan everything we do, and the time we wake up is crucial to making the day successful and productive. There’s already enough going on in a day without worrying about staying awake. So set a bed time, and do your body and your wallet a favor. Sleep is free from monetary charge.

The man on the horse? That’s Will Rogers and the horse is Soapsuds. Here’s some horse sense from the man himself.

“I’m not a member of any organized political party…I’m a Democrat.” The following quotes are from George Orwell, author of the book entitled: 1984.  “The very concept of objective truth is fading out of the world. Lies will pass into history.”  “Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”  “Power is not a means, it’s an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish a dictatorship.” Perhaps ‘ole George was ahead of his time.

“Democrats never agree on anything, that’s why they’re Democrats. If they agreed with each other, they’d be Republicans.” “America has the best politicians money can buy.” “There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading, the few who learn from observation… and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.” “Live in such a way that you wouldn’t be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.” Will Rogers was an American stage and film actor, vaudeville performer, cowboy, humorist, newspaper columnist, and social commentator from Oklahoma. He was a Cherokee citizen born in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory in 1879. He died in a plane crash near Point Barrow, Alaska in 1935. TexasTechWord.com / 2021-2022

Top 10 ways to declutter your dorm room

Advice from a senior

By Allison Monacelli Whether you’re in Stangel, Knapp, or Talkington, students always find themselves with too much stuff and not enough space on campus. All the dorms have slightly different storage options, but we all know that the third pair of sheets and 6 extra pairs of shoes may never find a permanent home. Students tend to forget when they pack for college that they will buy more clothes, get textbooks that take up way too much space, and possibly end up hating their decor by October. They bring everything they could possibly need and more on move-in day and then their room stays nice for about a week. Making sure you have just enough stuff and room to grow will save you from hating the space you’re stuck with until May, no promises on the roommate relationships though. 1. Multi-Use Furniture Starting off, getting multi-use furniture is a lifesaver. For dorms like Knapp and Talkington where the bed height is adjustable, getting an ottoman with a lid can save so much space and be a nice break from the furniture given to you. It can be used as a step stool or extra chair, and you can put shoes, blankets, pillows and really whatever you want in there. 2. Vertical Hangers Now on to the closets! Nowadays, boys and girls all have way too many clothes to fit in a dorm closet and they think they can put it in drawers, but things really do get lost in there. Using space saving tiered hangers almost triple the amount of clothes you can hang in your closet. They’re also an 20

TexasTechWord.com / 2021-2022

easy way to store belts, ties, and skirts. 3. Wrinkle Release Spray If you opt out of hanging the majority of your clothes and shove them all into the built-in furniture, make sure you pick up some wrinkle release spray. You can get it almost anywhere in the laundry aisle. The worst thing is waking up late for a presentation and realizing the shirt you were going to wear has been crumpled in the back of a drawer since move-in. Just spray the clothes, let them hang for a few minutes and you’re done. You have no need for an iron or steamer and you’ll smell great. 4. Shower Caddy With most dorms on campus having communal restrooms, having to bring your shower stuff in and out can get messy. If you are lucky enough to have your own shower in your room, just know that the rest of us are very jealous. If you have a shower caddy with all of your stuff, you can save time getting ready to shower and space in your room. Limit yourself to what can fit in the caddy and decorate it to make you excited to walk down the hall in flip flops and your bathrobe for the entire floor to see. Also try to get one with holes in it because they will get wet

and you don’t want your stuff to get moldy. 5. Think Up There isn’t a lot of square footage in the dorms so you need to get creative with the space you have and the best thing to do is go up. Jewelry hangers, overthe-door shoe and towel racks, hanging baskets and a hanger for that cute little shower caddy you made are great ways to keep anything organized and off the floor. They’re not the cutest things, but having that extra floor space won’t make you feel as cramped. 6. Empty Storage Bins Yes, empty. Bring bins to put at the top of your closet, under your bed, next to your desk or anywhere else they can fit. You will end up with extra stuff that you will want to have a space for. If you join greek life, you’ll have t-shirts, cups, knick-knacks that you didn’t take into account when you moved in. There will also be textbooks, reading materials, lab coats for the chemistry kids and other stuff you just acquired during your nine months in that room. 7. Soft Laundry bags That white plastic hamper from home may seem like the perfect thing for your dorm, but I promise that will take up more space than you were thinking. Having a soft laundry bag with a strap (most important part) will save you a lot of effort trekking to the laundry room. A soft bag can be stored away when you’re not using it and can be hung up in the room so it’s not always on the floor. Also if it gets really heavy you can just cinch it and roll it to the elevators. Get organized and declutter your dorm room 9. Filtered Water Bottle We all know not to drink the Lubbock tap water, so get a filtered water bottle. That way you don’t have to find a spot to fit a case of water and you never run out. Last year, the water fountains were closed on campus so the only option was tap water or bring your own bottled water. This will save you money on cases of water and space in the little shoe boxes we have all called home. 10. Share With Your Roommate Sharing was the first thing we learned in kindergarten and now we get to share a room with a stranger! Some of us do know our roommates, but we’ve probably never lived in the same room as them before. Try to talk to your roommate before move-in, but if you can’t, don’t buy cleaning sup-

plies or other shared items before you come. Talk about who is getting the fridge, microwave, rug, and whatever else you want in there. Having double will leave you with no space and remember sharing is caring. Also, the downstairs offices of the dorms have vacuums and other cleaning tools to borrow, so don’t bring those at all. To the freshman, you may be scared but college is fun. You’ll have long nights of studying, movie watching, and dorm hangouts so make your space yours. The most important thing is that you love it. Tech is now your home away from home. Also, no one has friends at the beginning of freshman year so go sit next to someone random in the dining halls. Who knows what it could become. (Continued from Page 20) 8. Collapsible Grocery Cart This may sound like an extra thing that you don’t need, but you’ll wish you had it. If you’re in Chitwood, Weymouth, or Coleman, you’ll thank me. A grocery cart on wheels that you can fold down is a blessing. You can use it to bring in anything from your car to your dorm. Keep it in your trunk, and whenever you have to make the hike from the parking lot to your room, you can just throw whatever in there and roll it on up. It’s also great for move-in and move-out when all those red carts are taken and for laundry when it’s all the way in the basement and you don’t want to carry your detergent and hamper. They also make ones with liners so no one can see what you have.

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” - Mahatma Gandhi “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.”-Mark Twain “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.”-Oscar Wilde

Unless your parents are paying for you to live alone in a 3,000 square foot home – you know, as a “real estate investment” – you probably have a roommate. Maybe this roommate comes and goes at all hours of night and you keep asking yourself, “I wonder what the cat drug in the house this time?” Yes sir, some people will crawl in the rack with about anything that breathes. Some lack integrity, but integrity is like talent – they don’t stock it on the shelves. So what do you do with a roommate that acts more like a pirate than a human being? “Arrr, Matey – who’s the gal you invited into our apartment last night that’s standing in the kitchen this morning drinking the orange juice straight out of the bottle?” Well, for starters, you need to set some guidelines. And I hate to use this word: rules. Yes, some rules to live by might solve a lot of problems as you move further in this “roommate relationship”. My sophomore year in college I was living with a guy that used to prop his armpit up on the corner of the couch after coming in from a workout at the Rec Center. He smelled like a sour carton of milk and there he was with his sweaty armpit stinking up the cloth furniture like a man that was born in the proverbial barn. That smell would work its way into the nostrils of all that sat down to watch a football game on Sunday afternoon. Whew! Talk about rough! Talk about classless bull#%&+! Ok, back to “the rules”. Before you get on the phone and call your mommy about your roommate, put your foot down. Hell, stick it in their mouth if you have to, but don’t just wait for your roommate to miraculously change into a more empathetic person. That’s not likely to happen. I mean, let’s face it, some people need parameters – and if they don’t have them, they’ll walk all over you. Rule #1: Don’t trash the place. Rule #2: NEVER loan money to one another. Rule #3: Don’t borrow things without asking. Rule #4: Practice decent personal hygiene (decent is good enough). Rule #5: Treat a closed bedroom or bathroom door like a LOCKED door (It was closed for a reason!). Rule #6: Have each other’s back. Rule #7: Stick to the rules. And remember, not everyone likes your dog as much as you do.

The PRESIDENT heads the Executive Branch and is the spokesman for students to the Board of Regents, administration, the community, and national organizations. Other duties of the president include establishing goals and priorities for the SGA; submitting and administering the SGA budget; and appointing and overseeing a Cabinet, Supreme Court, and nearly 150 members of university committees.

The EXTERNAL VICE PRESIDENT has many responsibilities in regard to the students of Texas Tech University, the Lubbock community, and even the State of Texas. These wide-ranging duties include serving as a liaison between the student body and the city of Lubbock, facilitating transportation in-and-around campus, coordinating communication efforts, and serving as vice-chair of the President’s Cabinet. Duties also include the supervision of all Student Government Association publications and also involve a close working relationship with local and regional governments.

The Internal Vice President serves as the liaison between the Executive and Legislative Branches. The Internal Vice President is President of the Student Senate and runs the bi-weekly senate meetings. In these meetings, the SGA and the senators work together to discuss, write, and pass legislation to better the university. The Internal VP works alongside the senators to see that they are working hard to create the change all students at Texas Tech want to see. The SGA and its senators allocate funding to all student organizations. The Internal VP also works with the executive members to accomplish goals within the exec team that include improving student safety, equality, and transparency between the students and SGA.

The VICE PRESIDENT OF GRADUATE AFFAIRS works to assist graduate students in different areas such as, but not limited to, academics, services, programs, research, and grants. The Graduate Affairs VP assists the President and other officers of the Student Government Association in making decisions for the student body, focusing on the needs of the graduate student. He/she also is a liaison between the SGA and graduate counsels within academic departments.

The SGA works to represent students’ interests and concerns to the administration, the Lubbock community, and local and state governments.
