Word’s Worth From the SGA External Vice President

Fellow Red Raiders, The WORD magazine is the official SGA student guide at Texas Tech, and has been for 37 years. The WORD is a great guide for all students to become informed about our campus and how to truly enhance their college experience. I would like to formally introduce myself as your new external vice president and update you on some of the initiatives I have already begun work on. One of my top priorities is to fulfill my campaign platform of increasing safety on campus. I am on the Campus and Community Safety Work Group, and I have addressed this issue and my plans to fix it by increasing campus lighting with the committee. We are now in the process of looking at the cost and labor necessary to put LED lights in the existing light fixtures on campus. LED lights will generate more light for each fixture and save money in the long run. Another initiative I am working on is the S-Bus, our newest addition to the SafeRide family. The S-Bus runs Thursday through Saturday from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. and serves the North Overton apartment complexes. The S-Bus provides a safe ride

home for students on Broadway or in the Depot District. I would like to expand its routes to serve more of our student residential areas. With Texas Tech making its way to Tier One status and more and more students coming into the Lubbock community, I want to lay the groundwork for our students to have a voice in city issues. This means adding more Tech students to public committees so they can be more informed of Lubbock issues. I would really like for the city of Lubbock to feel a true connection with our students. If you have suggestions or want to find out how student government can help you, please let me know. My door is always open. I am working hard for the students of Texas Tech. Wreck ‘em!

Student Union & Activities promotes student success by: • providing an environment for relaxation, social interaction, education and exchange of thoughts. It serves Tech students, staff, faculty, alumni and the greater Lubbock community.

• complementing the university’s academic programs by enhancing the overall educational experiences of students through participation in social, multicultural, intellectual, community service and campus governance programs.

Safe Social Networking While On Vacation Sharing vacation plans with friends, family, and co-workers using social networks is a common means of interacting in our world today. Due to the public nature of social networking, wait until you return home to post your vacation details and photos. The Texas Tech IT Division suggests these social networking safety tips for when you are on vacation: • Do not post trip updates while you are away -- such information “advertises” that you are not home, making your unoccupied home vulnerable to criminals prowling the web for personal info. • Have a family discussion and agree on rules about sharing information while on vacation. • Never share vacation details, including dates, times, or any information about family members that remain at your home while you are gone. • While on vacation, turn off location service applications on your phone unless you need to use one. • If possible, take a break – vacations are a great time to disconnect from the world for a while. Tech students represent approximately 10 percent of the Lubbock community. As homeowners, renters, and consumers at local businesses, students have a definite impact on the economy. More than half of the Tech student body lives off campus. Tech’s Responsible Community Living website offers some pointers to consider before moving off campus. Do your research: thoroughly research the area. Do your best to be a good neighbor: treat your neighbor as you would like to be treated. Be considerate. Be an Informed Consumer: don’t sign a lease agreement without consulting a parent or guardian. Consider your safety: be familiar with the neighborhood you are considering. Consider your personal health: important aspects of student’s success are physical and emotional well-being. http://www.depts.ttu.edu/dos/responsible-living.aspx

Living On-Campus Texas Tech provides students with 14 residence halls, two suitestyle halls, and an apartment complex on campus. On-campus students live within walking distance of class, the library, the Student Union building (SUB), the student recreation center, and more. Living in residence halls allows students to build relationships with others in a close knit community. On-Campus Housing Info: For the first time ever, students are required to show proof of a meningitis vaccine. On-campus housing is in high demand. New students may sign up using the Priority Room Selection system. Students with fewer than 30 college hours, excluding dual credit or credit by exam, are required to live on campus. University Student Housing offers residence life and professional staff positions.

Renting apartments or houses can be a difficult process, especially for someone new to the renting game. Step 1: Shop for places you would like to live. Pick up some SGA housing guides at the SUB, SGA office, or the Visitors Center, and flip through them. Housing guides will have basic information such as rates, utilities and whether or not they allow pets. Be cautious of on-line listings, and make sure you do your homework. Step 2: Meet with a realtor or landlord to look at apartments or houses. Impressions are important when you’re renting. When you meet with a realtor, look neat and be polite. Realtors aren’t going to treat you like a responsible adult if you don’t look and act like one. (Keep in mind, students are not a protected class, and property owners have the right to refuse to rent to students.) On your first visit, know what questions you want to ask. Here are some things you’ll need to know: Ask about maintenance. Who is responsible for the upkeep? What if something breaks? What if you break something? Step 3: If you like what you see, the next step is to apply for the apartment or house. Be financially prepared. Many places charge an application fee, and most require a down payment or deposit or fee when you apply. (Do not apply for several different apartments or houses. Most of the time, the deposits and fees are non-refundable.) You will need your social security card, driver’s license, employment information, contact information for current and past employers, and contact information for your current landlord. Renters may have income requirements, and they will contact your employers and your current (and past) landlords to make sure you’re a responsible renter. What if you don’t have any rental history? Most renters will require that a parent signs a guarantor form. That way if you mess up, mom and dad will be forced to pick up the tab. Remember, this is how you establish credit and rental history. Landlords will also check your criminal history, and that could be grounds for refusal. Tip: If you have any criminal history, let them know upfront. View this as an opportunity to build good credit. Step 4: Sign the lease. Read the lease. Yes, they’re long and boring, but you need to understand what you’re committing to. Step 5: You’re in! Now, how can you be a good renter? You now have responsibilities. You have

to keep things clean, whether you’re in an apartment or a house. If you’re in a house, keep your yard mowed. You have to remember to pay the rent and the utility bills on time, and if something breaks, you have to fix it or pay to have it fixed. Buy renter’s insurance. If something happens to your living space, it’s your problem. The owner is not responsible for things such as damage caused by natural disasters, fires, roof leaks, or break-ins, but renter’s insurance will cover those things. Talk to your insurance company about renter’s insurance, and make sure you understand everything they cover before you buy. It’s inexpensive and well worth it. Be a good neighbor. Be respectful of the people living near you, and remember, they can get you into trouble with your landlord and also with the law. Don’t trash the place. Be respectful of the space you are renting because if you tear up a house or an apartment, you’re destroying someone’s property, (which is called vandalism). Your credit and renting history will follow you wherever you go. If you miss or are late on payments, that will always be on your record and will cause problems next time you want to rent or buy. Also, do not leave somewhere still owing money because you will have to get that straightened out later on down the road.

• If you damage your roommate’s property, replace it and apologize. • Make time to see the people you call roommates. • Let your roommates know if you plan to have people over and be considerate of how long they visit. • Make sure that he or she gets their messages and mail. • Keep a calendar of when bills are due, and a place where it’s checked off as each portion is paid and when it was paid. • Clean up after yourself (and your guests). • Devise a system for shared-space cleaning, and maintenance. • Be considerate if your roommate is studying, not feeling well, or resting. • Do something nice once in a while. • Treat your housemate, as you would want to be treated. • Discuss differences. Are you a morning person or a night owl? • Do not engage in conversations with your roommate’s parents about their behavior.

• Do not let your friends use your roommate’s possessions. • Pets…. Treat pets as an extended guest. They are your responsibility, so choose wisely.

• Don’t discuss problems with friends. This helps reduce rumors and side conversations. • Confront the problem directly with the person • Consider your timing. Is this a difficult time or a good time? • Think about what you’re going to say before you say it and have solutions in mind before you complain. Example, “Please don’t park behind people who have early classes.” • Be reasonable. If your roommate forgets to do a chore, don’t get upset, chances are it won’t happen again. Set out a jar for offenses -- miss a chore, pay a fine. • Don’t accuse. Find solutions rather than creating problems.

A proper diet and exercise routine can be hard to implement, especially for college students trying to juggle a social and academic life. Luckily, you can get back on track with great places in Lubbock!

How to snack right

Snacking can be a problem for most of us - especially when bored. Yet, changing the way you snack with just a few details, such as the amount of sugary sweets and sodas consumed, can help lower your chance of weight and health problems. Smoothie King offers a variety of smoothies to choose from that are naturally sweetened with real fruit and are a convenient alternative for the sweet tooth. Many of these smoothies have zero fat. Just make sure you tell them to “make it a skinny.”

How to eat healthy

Deciding to eat healthier foods can be extremely beneficial

16

TexasTechWord.com / 2012-2013

with even the tiniest adjustments such as switching to olive oil from butter or adding a salad instead of mashed potatoes. It is usually easier to maintain a proper diet while eating from home where you can monitor the ingredients, but when you eat out, ask questions. You’ll be surprised to find out the ingredients in some restaurant’s “healthier” choices. Bless Your Heart is a one-ofa-kind restaurant located right here in Lubbock which offers a low-fat, heart-healthy menu. On the menu, you can see the amount of carbohydrates, calories, cholesterol, fat and sodium you are taking in while still enjoying delicious meals.

How to handle stress

College can be a time where students start experiencing significant stress levels for the first time and can begin to feel “overwhelmed.” Small amounts of stress can be a good thing

that keeps your body alert, but too much can actually lead to health risks such as headaches and lack of sleep. Learning to maintain a balance in your everyday routine including proper time management can keep you from the “student syndrome” of procrastinating which normally corresponds with stress and anxiety. Escape Your Body Float Center can help relieve the tension associated with stress with an innovative float tank. Two hours in one of these relaxing float tanks has been rated as equal to 8 hours of sleep and can lower biochemicals directly related to stress. For more info check out the website, http://escapeyourbody. net.

How to stay in shape

Exercise is beneficial to your health in areas such as weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Exercise can also help improve your mood, sex life, and sleeping. Even small amounts of exercise 30 minutes a day such as walking can drastically change one’s stamina, appearance, and mental well-being. The Rec at Texas Tech is always available for students and is a great place to begin your exercise career, but if you are looking for places outside of the school or are taking a semester off, look no further than Body Works and Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness is open 24/7 so with a busy college schedule, you can always find time to work out.

Healthy Habits

Healthy eating habits Healthy snack options • Mealtime rule-of-thumb: ½ your plate = vegetables, ¼ = meat, and ¼ = whole grain. • It’s healthier to have several small meals throughout the day rather than three big meals. • If you’re a late-night snacker, factor late-night snacking into your diet by counting it as one of your meals. • The earlier you eat and the more active you are before you go to bed, the more calories you burn. • Eat at places that have healthier options available. For example, most of the cafeterias on campus have salad bars. Stirfry is also a healthier option, especially if it’s made with water rather than oil. • Consider your options when you go out to eat. • Chicken is the least fatty meat, and fish is also a healthy option. Stay away from red meat or fried foods as much as possible. • Choose water or tea instead of energy drinks and sodas. • Remember, balance is key; most things are OK in moderation. For example, things such as salt and cheese are OK in small proportions.

Fruits and veggies, rice cakes with honey, smoothies, popcorn you can season yourself, trail mix, granola bars, and dried fruit.

Three types of exercise: • Cardiovascular exercise is for increasing your heart rate and burning fat. This includes activities such as using elliptical machines, running, biking, and swimming. • Interval training is about changing your workout so your body doesn’t get used to any particular exercise. • Resistance training or core training is exercising to tone your muscles. This includes work outs such as lifting weights, working with resistance bands or stability balls.

Quick tips

for fun & easy exercising • Walk on campus. • Go out dancing with friends. • Join group exercise classes. • Ride your bike to places off campus. • Take the stairs. • Go hiking or biking in parks. • Get involved with intramural sports on campus. • Go swimming with friends.

Responsible Drinking

Learn about the experience www.EscapeYourBody.net

1. Know your limit.

Know how much alcohol you can handle without losing control. Most people find that no more than a drink an hour will keep them in control of the situation and avoid drunkenness.

2. Eat food.

Having a healthy meal before drinking will slow the absorption of alcohol in your blood stream. Avoid typical “bar food” that is salty and encourages more drinking.

3. Sip your drink.

Sip your drink and order two waters for every alcoholic beverage. You’ll save money and remember what happened.

4. Be an adult.

If you don’t want to drink, don’t. Be the designated driver instead and commend yourself for being a good friend.

5. Be particular.

Become particular about what you consume. Cultivate taste. Choose quality rather than quantity. Learn the names of fine wines, whiskeys, and beers. Learn what beverage goes with what foods.

6. Avoid anything you don’t know.

Such drinks as zombies and other fruit and rum drinks can be deceiving, as the alcohol is not always detectable, and it is difficult to space them out. Anything mixed in a trashcan is usually a bad idea.

7. Appoint a designated driver.

Have someone available who will not be drinking and will drive all drinkers home. This is critical if any person has consumed more than one drink per hour.

8. Careful use.

Use alcohol carefully in connection with other drugs. This includes over-the-counter drugs such as sleeping pills and cold or cough medicines. Alcohol should be avoided while taking certain antibiotics, arthritic, anti-depressant, and many other prescription medications. Check with your physician or pharmacy before you drink while on any prescription drug.

9. Let others opt out from drinking.

Respect people who choose not to booze. Whatever their reason, let it be.

10. Avoid the heat.

Avoid drinking on a hot day out in the sun. This might produce hypoglycemia, which can cause dizziness, weakness, and mood change.

Maintaining your vehicle to get the best performance

Keep it serviced

The best way to save money on a vehicle is to keep it properly serviced and up to date on its maintenance. Pay attention to the factory maintenance schedule.

Change air filters & fuel filters

According to the Car Care Guide, a vehicle’s oil and filter are responsible for lubricating, cleaning and cooling critical parts of the engine. This is why the oil and filter should be changed every three months or 3,000 miles. With the air filter, keep it open and clean. Keep your oil changed. Get your transmission serviced. Change your transmission and brake fluids.

To improve fuel economy

Plan your trip out and leave earlier so you don’t get in heavy traffic where you’re using your accelerator and brakes frequently. Take the excess weight out of your car; the more weight your car has, the more gas it’s using. Keep the tank full. You get better mileage with a full tank. Idling burns gasoline more quickly than active driving, so eliminating unnecessary idling will improve a vehicle’s fuel economy.

Save gas

Another tip is to watch the way you drive. Fast starts and speeding will reduce the vehicle’s efficiency, requiring more frequent gas purchases. Finally, this may seem like a no-brainer, but use the car with the best gas mileage. If you have more than one car and are taking a long trip, use the car with the better gas mileage to reduce your costs. It is better on a car’s fuel pump – a potentially costly repair – to keep the fuel tank above ¼ full because the fuel in the tank insulates the pump and allows it to run more

3209 Slaton Hwy. 806-748-1044

easily and efficiently. There’s no reason to pay the extra 10 cents per gallon for a higher grade. Fuel’s fuel. Add a fuel additive every once in awhile. Keep adequate tire pressure. Too little or too much air causes a drag. Proper tire inflation can improve gas mileage by more than 3 percent.

Pump it up

Tire pressure also has to do with fuel efficiency if you keep it at the right amount of air. Either on the door or the door jam, there will be a sticker to tell the right pressure. Sometimes it can be on the gas cap door or the glove box, but 99 percent of the time it’s on the door. Whatever it says – 35, 32, 30, whatever – that’s what you want to use for that car. Double check the pressure in all of their tires, including the spare. Check the tires cold, before hitting the road. Also check the air in your spare, and make sure you get a key for your wheel lock. Proper tire alignment can make a big difference in a car’s performance as well as maximize the life of the tire. According to the Car Care Guide, a difference of only ¼ inch between the outside circumference of the front and rear tires can cause expensive damage to a vehicle. Rotate tires every 6,000 miles. The front tires wear on the edges more. On a front-wheel drive vehicle, the back tires can get scalloped, get real rough wear. Unbalanced tires can cause rapid wear on a vehicle’s shocks and struts, according to the Car Care Guide. Also, balance can change because of the vehicle’s normal tire wear. That’s why drivers should have the tires balanced regularly. The life of a normal tire is about 50,000 miles. They have tires rated as high as 80,000, but they’ll cost considerably more.

High-performance tires don’t wear as long, but they’re more fun to drive. The average tire starts about $60 and runs up to anywhere you can stand. Although owning a vehicle can be expensive, it is much less expensive as long as the vehicle is properly maintained. If you think you have a problem, get it checked out.

Maybe you rushed to that test and locked your keys in your car. Or perhaps you thought you had enough gas to make it to class and then to the gas pump. Everyone’s been there. That’s why University Parking Services developed the Motorist Assistance Program (M.A.P. for short). M.A.P. can provide assistance. Flat tire? They will bring an air tank. Out of gas? They will bring a free gallon of gas. Dead battery? They will provide a boost. Locked your keys in the car? They will contact a locksmith and pay for them to unlock your vehicle as quickly as they can. If you find yourself in need of assistance, call 742-MAPP. Service is limited to on campus and the Rawls Golf Course (does not include HSC). M.A.P. is available 24 hours a day except university holidays. The free service is limited to three times a year; thereafter, charges apply.

Commuter Parking Conundrum Solved University Parking & Weather Station: AM 1610

Are you ever in a rush to get to school and wondering where the best places to park on campus are located? Well, tune into AM 1610 to find out. This informational radio station has no music, no commercials, and no distractions. It is all information, all the time. AM 1610 provides commuters with information from the best places to park on campus to local weather updates. If there is ever inclement weather in the area, the local weather service will take over and loop the warning messages to update commuters. During the busiest times of the school year, particularly in the fall, the loop of informational messages takes about nine to 10 minutes to complete. The loop is consistently updated every 30 minutes. In the summer, when updates are slow or infrequent, the loop will only take about one minute to complete. The loop works like a playlist. Updates are recorded by a computer and later broadcast. Commuters are able to receive real time updates.

Vehicles on campus

Beware:

Read the signs! Know the rules and read the signs about vehicles on campus so you don’t end up with parking tickets, a boot on your vehicle, or an expensive towing fee. To park or drive on campus, students must register their vehicles and obtain an ePermit. Here are some options when it comes to parking on campus. Residence Hall parking: Convenient for students living in residence halls. Commuter parking: Commuter parking offers on-campus parking for commuters. The buses come by often to take you closer to your destination. Park and Pay: Visitors can pay $1.20 an hour or $7.20 a day to park in designated park-and-pay lots between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. Faculty and Staff Permits: Yes, even faculty and staff folks must pay for parking. Vendor Permits: Allow vendors access to campus in designated areas. Vendors include the folks who restock the SUB with food. Alternatives to parking: If you want to avoid the parking issue completely, try alternative options for getting to campus such as taking the bus, riding a bicycle, or walking. Citibus has routes originating off campus that will bring you on campus. License Plate Recognition: License Plate Recognition (LPR) is an image processing technology used to identify vehicles by their license plates. Appeal a Citation: If you receive a citation, appeal it in writing within 10 days. Pay a Citation: Pay parking citations online within 10 days to avoid additional fees. Additional details are available at http://www.parking.ttu.edu.

PEGASUS Program

Are You A First Generation College Student? First generation college students come from a family where neither parent has graduated from college. To prepare first generation college students for their new environment, Tech offers the PEGASUS program. This program helps students become the first in their family to learn about college. The PEGASUS program strives to help the student, the family, the university, and the community by easing the transition to college, bridging the gaps created by changing expectations, diversifying the student body, and nurturing the goal of a college education. The PEGASUS program can help solve a variety of challenges faced by first generation college students during their freshman year. Some of these challenges include juggling home and college environments, changes in family and personal relationships, adapting to a competitive academic environment, managing time and events, and explaining the demands and rigors of college life to family and friends. To combat these challenges, the PEGASUS program offers guidance and

counseling services to all first-generation college students. First- and second-year students, as well as transfer students, have the option of being assigned a mentor. PEGASUS also offers support services, direction for problem solving, and outreach to families. For more information, please contact Ashley Gonzales, Ashley.Gonzales@ttu.edu, at 806-742-7060. Visit www.fgc.ttu.edu for more information.

On-campus residents are required to have a dining plan and receive all the benefits of dining on campus. Students have until the 12th class day of each semester to change their dining plan. Unused Dining Bucks may be rolled over to your next on-campus living contract. You will not lose your Dining Bucks at the end of the semester if you are on a commuter plan. Commuter plans do not expire and any remaining balance will carry over from semester to semester. Commuter Dining Bucks are non-refundable and nontransferable.

Earn a master’s degree in one year

Media & Communication Gives Students an Edge in Job Market The College of Media and Communication 30-hour Master of Arts program provides students the opportunity to earn a master’s degrees in one year and launch into the job market with advanced credentials. Different from many other communication graduate programs in the country, the 30hour program is designed for students to graduate with a master’s within a year. This one additional year of education gives students an edge against other candidates in the communication industry. “Many of our enrolled students have jobs lined up even before they graduate from the program,” said Coy Callison, associate dean of graduate studies for the College of Media & Communication. “The 30-hour program not only allows students to receive jobs more quickly than those with only bachelor’s degrees, it also often translates to higher pay, and more promotions as well.” Students generally complete the 30hour program within one full year at Texas Tech with specific classes catered to the fall, spring and summer semesters. Through this professionally-geared program, students are

given the option of choosing a general mass communications or sports-media track based on individual interests. Each program entails specific courses that accommodate each area of communication, including public relations, advertising, electronic media and journalism. Integrating all areas of communication gives students a more complete understanding of the industry. Current master’s student Brittany Campbell, a unit coordinator at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center Office of Alumni Relations, said the array of classes in the program has broadened her understanding of how strategic communication can be used across disciplines. “The classes are so eclectic,” Campbell said. Campbell said the program has allowed her to come in contact with other students she believes will be leaders in industry. “I have met some amazing people in the program,” Campbell said. “I feel that networking with these people has been the best part of the program, and I have made some great contacts I know will be part of my future success.”

New Course Graduate Seminar in Political Geography What do bodies, borders, territories, and nations have in common? They are all spaces in which struggles for power are formed and contested. Political geographers study how politics shape these spaces and how such spaces inform politics. Topics addressed in this seminar will include the impacts of borders on migration and citizenship, the status of nation-states, and the rise of new non-state actors, and state-citizen relations, and cultural identity. Course will focus on the U.S. context, but draw on other regions of the world as well. Sign up for Advanced Human Geography - Geog 5303.003.

Learn to manage your money Elective Courses Guarantee a Return on Your Investment

Balancing a budget can sometimes seem impossible. Many students must survive on a tight budget each semester by cutting down on expenses and learning to live frugally. Putting yourself on a budget for the first time can definitely be an overwhelming and daunting task. If you are in need of financial guidance and information, Tech offers two financial courses which will guarantee a return on your investment. The Personal Financial Planning division offers both undergraduate and graduate courses that are helpful electives. PFP 3301: Personal & Family Finance offers topics that include budgeting, cash management, debt management, saving, investing, housing, taxes, and retirement. The main objective is teaching students how to manage money. PFP 3301 meets the core curriculum requirements for Individual and Group Behavior. PFP 5322: Professional & Personal applications is a graduatelevel survey course for those wanting to use the knowledge in a professional career or for one’s own personal well-being. Topics include financial statements, time value of money, saving and investing strategies, and employee benefits. A syllabus for both PFP 3301 and PFP 5322 can be found at www.pfp.ttu.edu. You see it on the local news several times a year − “Lubbock hotel rooms are sold out”... According to the statistics from the Texas Department of Economic Development in Austin, Texas − FOUR MILLION (that's 4,000,000) visitors come to Lubbock each year. No time to be reserved about reservations Unless you want mom and dad sleeping on your dorm floor, make hotel reservations

If you’re enjoying living away from home and don’t want mom and dad bunking with you, take time to research hotels in the area. Peak times to be aware of include graduation, football games, parent’s weekend, and all types of events happening on campus and in Lubbock. The summer is busy with orientation, student visits to Lubbock, travelers, etc. Every football game weekend is busy. The big ones such as Texas, West Virginia, and Oklahoma sell out first and at the highest rates. Depending on what’s happening in Lubbock, a two-day minimum stay may be required. Just be sure to check out the details. Students can help make reservations for the parents. The student probably knows more about Lubbock and where hotels are located. Graduation weekends are important times to book early – really early!

If the online reservation system indicates that all rooms are sold out, call the property directly. It is more expensive for a hotel to book rooms online than if you call the property directly. Although parent’s weekend and big football games are a set visit for some families, there are many more weekends throughout the year. Check out the Lubbock Convention and Visitor’s Bureau at www. visitlubbock.org. Any weekend is a good time to visit Lubbock.

Parents Weekend 101: Entertaining Mom & Dad when they come to town

Here are some ideas to keep your parents busy and happy by letting them assist in a few chores. • Auto maintenance. Let your parents have the chance to get your car up to speed so you can drive home more often. A tank of gas, new tire or two, and even an oil change always makes parents feel better about you being so far from home. Check out all the car coupons in the coupon section of The WORD. • Essentials. Take them to Leonard’s Grocery and other local spots. A trip to fill up your pantry or dorm room is another good activity. • A few good meals. When parents are in town, the Lubbock restaurants know it. Take your parents to some of the great places listed in The WORD Dining Guide. • Career wear. You are here to get a degree and eventually get a job. Take mom and dad out so you can try on some things you may need for those interviews and career-day events coming up. • Meeting your friends. While your parents are here, invite your buddies by so they can put a name with a face for all the stories they hear. • A game or a local attraction. Something is always in season at Tech, from football to basketball to baseball. Visit a local winery and tour the museums. • Texas Tech apparel Make sure everyone in the family goes home with at least one Texas Tech apparel item. It will remind them of you, and where their money is going.

Traveling Safety Tips:

Precautions While On Vacation You are at risk for identity theft while away from home. Credit cards, passports, and other official forms of personal identification are targets. Protect yourself and take extra precaution with items most likely to be stolen while traveling. Thieves are just as likely to target your personal information as your expensive camera or laptop. The Texas Tech IT Division offers these tips to help protect your identity. • Don’t travel with all your credit cards. • Don’t leave personal information in your hotel room. Store valuables in the hotel safe. • If you make travel arrangements using your mobile phone, be careful about the information you input and store in the application, such as saving your login information, credit card number, or billing address. Your saved information could be stolen along with your phone. • Avoid accessing personal information from public computers. Most public wireless connections are not secure, so avoid using them for secure and/or sensitive transactions, such as transactions requiring a login. • Stay alert. It is easy to let your guard down while relaxing on vacation, but be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Welcome to Lubbock and to Catholic Student Ministries (CSM). We are located at St. Elizabeth University Parish, just a block and a half east of campus on Broadway. We hope that you will join us for the wide variety of activities. We are home to a vibrant and active community passionately seeking Christ. The Catholic Student Center is a “home away from home” for hundreds of students in Lubbock and we welcome all who seek to join us. The main goal of the Catholic Student Ministries is “Bringing the Good News to Texas Tech”. We are a community centered on the Eucharist and seek to spread the Gospel through education, stewardship, service, and fellowship in order to form passionate Catholic leaders. The Catholic Student Center provides a variety of activities and amenities to include: a kitchen, lounge, computers with high speed internet access, wireless internet access, a pool table, offices, meeting rooms, and a

The parish celebrates a Mass at 5:00 PM Sundays geared especially for the student population. We also celebrate Mass on campus each Wednesday of the academic year, check the calendar on the website for location. All ministries during these Masses are done by students; so it is a great way to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist on a deeper level. To get the most out of your experience here, you should plan to attend as many events as possible. In that you are a young adult, it is your choice to determine how much you will wish to get involved in the CSM. Christ is calling you to Him and it is through participation in the events sponsored by Catholic Student Ministries, you will grow in your relationship with Him. Christ in Action Student Ministries (CA)

“CA” is a community of students loving God, and learning what it means to follow Jesus. Whether we are on a weekend retreat, in service or in worship, around a table or in class…this is what we are about. We are not nearly perfect, but we are being re-made, we are loved by God, and we are revived by Him. You are always welcome in our community. Here are a few things that we do weekly and that have been helpful to us in our journey with God: Manna @ 9:15am Sundays: before worship we get together to eat breakfast and discuss God’s word, not as information, but as “bread”. (1924 Broadway - Broadway Church of Christ) Worship @ 7:09pm Wednesdays: in a very simple way, we pause in the middle of the week to worship, and to take the ways of Jesus to heart. (2406 Broadway - Christ in Action building) Lunch @ 11:30am Thursdays: home-cooked food! (2406 Broadway - Christ in Action building) G.R.O.V.E. groups: seeking Christ in community, and making space for others to do so with us. Drop by anytime, we would love to help you connect...and revive. 2406 Broadway (just east of Cricket’s) caministries@gmail.com 806.765.8831 www.christinaction.org

Lutheran Student Fellowship (LSF)

Lutheran Student Fellowship is a family of college students seizing everyday opportunities to reach out with the love of Christ. We reach out to all students of Texas Tech, Lubbock Christian University and South Plains College who know Christ and want to grow, and to those who do not know the Lord. We participate in servant events and mission trips during spring break and summer and will provide our students an opportunity to serve people in need, and spread the Gospel. Students are encouraged to visit area churches on Sunday mornings for worship; and the regular activities at the Lutheran Center serve as a supplement to Sunday worship and Communion. The Lutheran Student Center is a place for students to relax, to play ping-pong, a game of pool, a game of foosball, to study the Bible, to watch TV, watch videos or DVDs. They also may meet with their study groups, or just get together with friends. At the LSC, we share in that which is common, Jesus Christ, and learn from one another. It is also a place to meet weekly to feed you - spiritually and physically. We take a retreat each fall and do a service project each spring during Spring Break. Visit our Web site on-line calendar for more up-to-date details & Welcome Week activities - www.orgs.ttu.edu/ lutheranstudentfellowship. Weekly Activities Include: • Supper On Sundays - We’re talking’ home -cooked, FREE MEAL provided by members of the local congregations. Sundays at 5:30 p.m. • Food for the Soul - Sundays at 6:30 p.m. A pastor-led Bible study following Supper on Sunday. • Dinner and a Movie - On the first Friday of each month, the Fellowship gathers at the Lutheran Student Center and goes out to eat and take in a movie, or orders delivery and watches a movie here at the Lutheran Student Center. skirts, tops, jackets, pants, jeans, dresses. Put together a different look every time you dress. We wear 10% of our wardrobe 90% of the time, because we always wear things that we buy together and don’t branch out. • Buy quality versus quantity. Your clothes will last longer and will always be in good shape. • When a new item goes into your closet, an old item must be taken out. • Don’t clutter closet with pieces that you can’t or don’t wear anymore. They crowd what you can wear. • Stay within 2 or 3 color palettes so they will always coordinate with each other. Odd-color pieces are limited in what they will go with. • Don’t overbuy trends. They go out of style after a season or two, and you don’t have anything to wear. Buy one or two trendy looks and wear them a lot to get your money’s worth. Then it’s OK to get rid of them. • Take your clothes that are still in good shape but you are

tired of to the resale shops. You can get extra spending money fairly quickly - also, shop resale stores. You’ll be surprised at what you find. • Take advantage of sales, and buy quality items at a lower price. • Shop alone. You always overspend or buy something you are talked into when you shop with friends. • Have a swap party with your friends. Everyone brings items that are still in good shape and in style and trades with others. • Don’t spend a lot on tops and tees that are worn underneath sweaters, jackets, etc. Spend the bulk of your money on the outside pieces. • Solids last longer than prints and patterns and are easier to mix and match. • Buy a fabulous handbag and pair of shoes and wear with everything simple. Make your accessories update your wardrobe when you can’t buy a lot of new clothes. • Don’t wait until the last

Change it up with accessories, shoes, colored jeans or denim jeans, white T-shirt, and bomber jacket. Or add a bright-colored scarf and trendy shoes or booties casual, yet put together to give a sophisticated casual look.

minute to purchase something new for an event. You will either overspend, or buy something just to have it done.

Finding Fashion in Lubbock

Lubbock has several local boutiques that carry all the highend designers. Department stores also carry designer brands, as well as contemporary brands college students want. Every trend is available at a price point you can afford. You just have to decide what you want and then go to all departments and look for similar styles at lower prices. Stores have sales going on all the time. Make friends with your sales associate and she/he will call you when your favorite items go on sale. Students who only shop around the University area don’t even realize all the small stores located in Southwest Lubbock. Lubbock has a lot of resale shops.
