Welcome to our September/October edition. It’s nice to see Butlins open again, and to see tourists back in Minehead. I suppose it’s a double edged sword as we need to sustain our local economy, but the worry that people may be bringing Covid into the town. I have to say the people I have met seem to be keeping their distance and wearing masks in the shops. We haven’t had the invasion of people like in other seaside towns.

Most of the tradespeople I have spoken to seem to have plenty of work, but are now suffering with supply from manufacturers.

I guess they are now several months behind due to the furloughing scheme. I think we are taking this new way of living and working as the new norm, although I have had a couple of instances where I was one my way to see a client and had to turn back because I’d forgotten my mask.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our features contributors who have made the magazine so interesting. The feedback we have received from people has been overwhelming, and the comments that our delivery team have passed back have are very encouraging. So thank you! I’d like to mention our advertisers for without them we have no magazine at all. We know some are struggling and see the need to keep their name out there, so please use their services and mention where you saw the advert.

We are pleased to trial an idea we have had for a while, extending an article or advert by connecting up with a video. We are doing this via a QR code. These have been around for years but have been slow to take off. You may have seen a small square on products, bit like bar codes but square. The QR codes can be used in many ways but ideal as a portal to take you a specific place or page on the internet. To read these you need a smart phone and download a QR reader app from the Android Play store or Apple’s App Centre. It Takes seconds. You click on the app and most will show camera screen with a red line running across the middle. Just put the line across the chosen QR code and it will link up with the page you may be looking for. Try the one above and it’ll take you to a Trip around Minehead in 1980, which I recorded years ago on early video. We have also used a code on Tim Moore’s feature page inside, and you will be transported to a 45 minute interview we had with Tim. We hope to use more of these to expand our advertiser’s voice, to give a more in depth view, either as an interview or an ‘in house’ video.

From Bricks to Butlins The other day someone said to me ‘ Fancy Butlins being built on what must have been beautiful unspoilt countryside.’ Well, that is not entirely true, as seven acres of the land on which Butlins stands was former industrial land, home of the Warren Brick and Tile Works founded in 1750. It operated until 1919 and extracted blue clay. John Page wrote in 1890 ‘ a brickfield poisons the air with odours as stifling as those of a bottomless pit.’

The Luttrells owned the business and worked through a local agent.

The key figure on site was the manager who needed numerous skills for the production of goods.

He had to dig and prepare the clay, make bricks and tiles, pack or set the kiln and ensure correct firing.

The owners searched throughout Somerset for their brick makers.

In 1759 John Mogg, a potter from Bristol, came to the Warren. In the early years earthenware vessels in the form of kitchen utensils were made at the Warren yard or at the Dunster kiln which stands behind the Luttrell Arms Hotel.

For commercial reasons it was the brick and tile production that pre-dominated, such as plain 4.

tiles, used since Mediaeval times, pantiles,gutter bricks (for drainage channels),bars for malt-house kilns and ridge tiles.

Wooden moulds were needed to enable the worker to shape the objects. The colour of bricks is determined by the chemical composition of the clay, the fuel used to fire them and the level of oxygen available during firing.

In 1784 taxes were levied on bricks and tiles. 2s 6d per 1000 bricks and varied rates for tiles depending on their design and usage. This was scrapped in 1850.

The Luttrells became conscious of the large scale manufacture of clay goods in Bridgwater and in 1813 recruited William Turner who had worked at Bridgwater.

Records of 1882 show that coal for the kiln was shipped via Minehead to the Warren by Captain H. Pulsford. In that same year bricks were made for use at Dunster Railway Station and many of the tied cottages on the estate, especially for flooring. Victorian bricks have been found locally stamped 1869 and 1879 but the significance of those dates is unknown.

It is interesting to reflect that Butlins was erected on clay pits and its lake was on the site of pools originally formed by previous workers.

Some 20 years before the Warren closed, the Victoria Brick and Tile Works in Alcombe was opened in 1897. Built by John B. Marley these works were in response to the Victorian demand for bricks and tiles in an expanding Minehead. The clay pit here extended over 10 acres to the South of the A39. Clay was transported by tramway, the trucks moving on a counterbalance principle. The taller of the two chimney stacks was built by William Court of Minehead. It is said that he did a headstand on the top to celebrate completion of his job!

Despite producing 60,000 bricks per week in 1945, economics ,two world wars and the popularity of alternative materials caused the works to close in 1947. The land was built over and all that remains of the name is the attractive development called Marley Close.

Henri Salmet : a tour of West Somerset.

West Somerset had, in 1911, experienced its first encounter with the wonders of a flying machine when Minehead was visited by the celebrated airman Bentfield ‘Benny’ Hucks. The Daily Mail did much to sponsor the early years of flight and indeed had put up the not inconsiderable sum of ten thousand pounds for the winner of the ‘Round Britain Air Race’ at the time of Benny’s visit.

Had you been travelling on the railway from Minehead to Watchet, you would have seen the pilot who had playfully followed and overtaken the train, attracting no doubt an enthusiastic response from the passengers as they leaned out of the carriage windows to view this remarkable sight.

In1914, Minehead received another visit from an intrepid airman, a Frenchman, one Henri Salmet, a true ‘magnificent man in his flying machine’, as part of a visit to the West Country, a tour again sponsored by the Daily Mail. Arriving in dramatic and spectacular style, having circled the town several times, he came in to land on the sandy beach serving as the landing strip, no doubt to the astonishment and awe of the onlookers whose incredulity at this great spectacle is not difficult to imagine.

They followed the coastline to Watchet, where an eager and expectant crowd had gathered on the Esplanade and the pier to watch the fly past. As Salmet approached the town, the spectators were horrified to see the plane first lose height and then nosedive into the waters below.

A contemporary report in the West Somerset Free Press stated: ‘It sent up a huge column of sea and steam, obliterating all traces of the machine and its occupants for a few seconds, it seemed as if both had completely disappeared.

A feeling of terror gripped many of those who had witnessed what seemed to be a dive to the death.

The incident had happened about a mile out to sea and with the utmost alacrity, the crew of the Watchet lifeboat was launched to see if anything could be done to aid the hapless victims along with their plane which was drifting rapidly away on the ebb tide.

With fevered rowing, the crew quickly reached the unlucky pair and remarkably, the two were rescued which was fortunate as neither of them could swim!

It was with some trepidation that Mr. Murray Hill, a resident of the town who had provided a hangar and security for the monoplane, was, as part of a number of exhibition flights, given the thrill of a personal flight. The excited passenger was reported as saying ‘his flight to have been glorious, but the wind at times was so terrific, he could scarcely hold his head against it’.

Salmet left Minehead en route to Weston and had an uncomplicated and easy take 6.

Since becoming PCC in 2012, putting victims first, especially domestic abuse and sexual violence survivors, has always been a priority.

We know lockdown has had a significant impact on victims who were living with perpetrators, who were even more isolated from loved ones and who felt that there was no way to escape.

With restrictions changing all the time, we are beginning to enter the recovery phase of the pandemic and we need to ensure that all victims and survivors who have been at risk during lockdown know that there is help out there.

the change needed in helping communities of Avon and Somerset be safe and feel safe.

I hope that this additional funding will ensure we can support and strengthen those hard-working organisations who have been a lifeline to local people during these challenging times. Lockdown blues and shiny school shoes With Jo Middleton

mix of anxiety, acceptance, calm and boredom that I’m sure a lot of people have experienced. A lot of the highs and lows have evened themselves out, but still, things don’t feel right for me yet.

I’ve loved seeing Taunton coming back to life - I’ve enjoyed being able to get my favourite peanut butter granola at the farmers’ market and sitting outside Mr Miles with a coffee - but it’s all the while with a cloud hanging over things, even on the sunniest day.

September is normally an exciting time of the year for me. Even though my children are all grown up now it still has a back to school feel about it. September to me is all about fresh starts and new projects, stretching out of the summer and getting enthused about new opportunities.

This September though doesn’t have quite the same kind of optimism about it does it?

Although the world is tentatively reopening, as much as I want to believe that things are ‘getting back to normal’, it still feels like it’s anything but.

In the last issue I described the emotional rollercoaster I’d experienced during the first few months of lockdown - that heady

I’m an optimistic person by nature, and this negativity doesn’t sit well with me, but as much as I try to count my blessings and be grateful for my good health and the warm weather, I can’t seem to shift the feeling of uneasiness. Life is far from ‘normal’, whatever that might mean now, and I don’t like it.

I don’t like not being able to hug people. I miss the events I used to attend regularly in Taunton, with the opportunity to catch up with all of those people that you know well enough to enjoy chatting with but not quite well enough to feel like you can contact them during a global pandemic. I don’t like wearing a facemask in shops and having my glasses steam up and I miss the spontaneity of a day out where you don’t have to book a slot in advance just to go for a walk.

I sound like a spoilt child I know, but the last few months have shown me more and more that these small pleasures and freedoms have a big impact on our mental wellbeing. Just a five minute catch up and a hug with an acquaintance can make a massive difference to a day, and an extended period without these regular interactions takes its toll for sure.

I’ve talked to a lot of friends about it and many of them feel the same - they were sure, like me, that as time went on, their mood would gradually improve. They believed that as lockdown eased, so would that underlying feeling of tension, of being trapped, but no, it persists. At least it’s a comfort to know I’m not alone in feeling it.

And so we head into a new season of lockdown and who knows what it will bring. Let’s all do what we can to be kind to one another.

MARTIN G STRAUS - 0747 007 8131 Now that lockdown has eased a little, we are able to eat out once again, albeit under controlled conditions. It was my 71st birthday on 5th July, which coincides with that of a good friend. For the second year running, we’ve managed to have a joint birthday lunch, this year at Mr Miles. We sat outside under a parasol, with social distancing and other COVID procedures strictly adhered to.

My friend’s partner happened to walk by, and I invited her to join us. I ordered scrambled eggs and smoked salmon (highly recommended) but what to drink? I ordered a bottle of house champagne to celebrate, and what a great choice!

It was Nicholas Feuillete Brut – a most enjoyable wine, made by the oldest union of producers of champagne. Mr Miles sell it at £30 per bottle - an extremely fair restaurant price when one considers it retails at £20, and Prosecco costs around £20 in a restaurant. All credit to Colin Barrell, the owner of Mr Miles.

I write for a Facebook page, Martin’s Drinks Club. This has been a godsend during the long days and evenings of lockdown, so I’ve been stepping up my cocktail activities. Until now this has been restricted to regular write-ups, but now the webcam has finally arrived, we are shortly launching online interactive presentations. The number of readers is growing, which is very satisfying. It therefore seems logical to select one of these for this feature, but which one of the many delightful fruits of my efforts?

However, one cocktail in particular has reached 335 people, three to four times as many as the next most popular one – The GAYLE SEALE cocktail. Gayle is the Global Ambassador for Foursquare Rum, the Barbados company which owns the outstanding Doorly’s brand. Gayle’s husband Richard is renowned for making some of the purest and most remarkable rums in the world. They also make Velvet Falernum, an iconic Barbados product providing sweetness and spices. I also used for the first time a beautiful Venetian cocktail glass, bought on Ebay.

50 ml Doorly’s XO rum, 40% abv 25 ml freshly squeezed lime juice 15 ml John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum, 11% abv 5 ml Monin simple syrup 3 dashes Angostura bitters

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with (cubed) ice. SHAKE WELL and STRAIN into a chilled fancy cocktail glass.

This cocktail is quite complex, with superb balance and a long finish - perfect for sipping on a hot summer’s evening in the garden. The blend of rum, lime and Falernum is typical of the Caribbean, and comes under the heading of a “Tiki” drink.

Most of the cocktails I make are termed “classic” and reminiscent of the great pre-war cocktail era.

I’ve only recently been exploring the modern Tiki style and love it! If we can’t travel easily to the Caribbean because of cost and COVID, let’s bring the Caribbean to Taunton!

cases, while female stag beetles have shiny brown wing cases.

Lesser stag beetles tend to have a much squarer overall look.

A fully-grown stag beetle larva (grub) can be up to 110mm long.

They’re fairly smooth skinned, have orange head and legs and brown jaws. They are nearly always found below ground and can be as deep as half a metre down.

Stag beetle facts Scientific name: Lucanus cervus Stag beetles are one of the most spectacular insects in the UK. The male’s large jaws look just like the antlers of a stag. They spend most of their life underground as larvae, only emerging for a few weeks in the summer to find a mate and reproduce. Stag beetles and their larvae are quite harmless and are a joy to watch.

A stag beetle’s head and thorax (middle section) are shiny black and their wing cases are chestnut brown.

Male beetles appear to have huge antlers. They are actually oversized mandibles, used in courtship displays and to wrestle other male beetles. Adult males vary in size from 35mm – 75mm long and tend to be seen flying at dusk in the summer looking for a mate.

Female beetles are smaller at between 30-50mm long, with smaller mandibles. They are often seen on the ground looking for somewhere to lay their eggs.

The beetle most often mistaken for a female stag beetle is the lesser stag beetle. However, lesser stags are black all over with matt wing

Stag beetles live in woodland edges, hedgerows, traditional orchards, parks and gardens throughout Western Europe including Britain – but not Ireland.

Stag beetles are relatively widespread in southern England and live in the Severn valley and coastal areas of the southwest.

Elsewhere in Britain they are extremely rare or even extinct.

Female stag beetles prefer light soils which are easier to dig down into and lay their eggs. Newly emerging adults also have to dig their way up through the soil to reach the surface, therefore areas like the North and South Downs, which are chalky, have very few stag beetles. They also prefer areas which have the highest average air temperatures and lowest rainfall throughout the year.

Larvae feed on decaying wood under the ground. Adults can’t feed on solid food – they rely on the fat reserves built up whilst developing as a larva. They can use their feathery tongue to drink from sap runs and fallen soft fruit.

Males are often seen flying around at dusk searching for a mate. They will wrestle or fight other males using their enlarged antler-like jaws. Although they can fly, female beetles are most often seen walking around on the ground.

Once they’ve mated, females return to the spot where they emerged, if there is enough rotting wood to feed their young, and dig down into the soil to lay their small, round eggs in rotting wood such as log piles, tree stumps and old fence Stag beetles are legally protected from sale in the UK. They are also classed as a ‘priority species’, listed on Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. If stag beetles or their larvae are known or thought to be present at a site where an application for planning has been submitted, and are likely to be disturbed or destroyed whilst work is carried out at the site, it’s recommended that someone with an understanding of the insects’ requirements be present to see that any larvae or adults are carefully translocated to a suitable natural or purpose-built habitat close by.

We’re particularly keen for people to record stag beetles in the counties on the border of their known range including Norfolk, Cheshire, Bedfordshire, Somerset, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Shropshire.

From Bampton Street to The Bee Gees.

TIM MOORE PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN

80s he took off for London and joined a rock & blues band ‘The Heartbeats’. The guitarist he met in Bridgwater from ‘No Dice’ was invited to an audition with the then upcoming Nik Kershaw.

Who has ever been to The Queens Head to watch the local band ‘Rough Justice’ play?

Their keyboard player is local boy, Tim Moore. I knew Tim back in the 70s when we would go down ‘The Ship’ in Porlock and he would be playing the piano. Age 16 he joined a local band ‘Skye’. At the same time he used to do session work at a recording studio in Bridgwater.

One day a signed band from London dropped in, by the name of ‘No Dice’, and they soon became good friends.

Tim’s band Skye were not making waves, so in the early 16.

He didn’t get the gig, but he remembered Tim, and recommended him as a talented keyboard player. Tim was invited for an audition, and got the job. It was pivotal moment in what would become a long and exciting career, working with some all-time greats and creating some memorable stories to look back on.

With several major hits, ‘I Won’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’, ‘The Riddle’ and ‘Wouldn’t it be Good’, Kershaw toured around the world - extensively across Europe, but also Japan, Australia and the USA. Life was good - playing in a great band, making a living at last, enjoying some wild backstage parties, and a few appearances on Top of the Pops.

The highlight was appearing at Live Aid UK in 1985 with everyone from Madonna to Queen and a crowd of 72,000

people packed into Wembley stadium.

By 1987 however, Kershaw’s popularity was waning and something new was required.

After a chance meeting at an MCA party with a woman who had just started The Session Connection, Tim joined her stable of musicians. He was soon offered to join a Canadian group ‘Saga’, who played progressive rock with all the glitz and glitter. Playing with them took him on a European and South American tour with some later songwriting sessions in LA. Tim was also making a name for himself as a session player in London, by then living back in sunny Minehead. He would travel back and forth until a call came in to play live with Bros. They were at their peak with ‘Brosmania’ and a large teenage fan base.

Soon their fame started to wane as Kershaw released a new album ‘The Works’. Elton John and Nik were friends and Elton asked Nik to tour with him. Tim was asked to play in the band again and rejoined the line-up.

It was at this time that Elton celebrated his lavish 42nd birthday in a château on the River Seine, where he arrived in costume as Louis XIV with powdered wig and a massive birthday cake. It seemed every ‘A’ listed celebrity came too.

The tour finished and Tim returned to Minehead, with very little work until Debbie from the Session Connection

discuss details. Tim was on his way to Miami, to help with their new album ‘High Civilization’.

He immediately clicked with the guys, especially Maurice.

The album went well and there was a European Tour in 1991.

Work on a second album, Size Isn’t Everything, commenced in 1992.

Unfortunately, that year Hurricane Andrew hit Miami, and work stopped, Tim returning to the UK. He later returned to play a gig with the Gibbs at the Miami Dodgers Stadium in aid of the hurricane victims, after which work on the new album continued into 1993 but the planned tour was cancelled due to Barry hurting his back. Later in 1997 they asked Tim to join them at The Brit Awards and again in 2001 when they wanted him to join them on a new album promotion tour in the UK, and in the States.

In the 90s, he also was MD for a tour with East 17, and was keyboard player on several

tours with Johnny Hallyday, who was a massive rock & roll star in France, but little known elsewhere. In the early noughties he spent a lot of time writing, teaching and joining in recording projects online.

In 2017, Tim got the call to play at the O2 arena with Bros (again) on their return gig, so patently the ‘big gig’ flame is still burning, but he’s just as happy playing in the local pub with his mates!

A breathtakingly beautifully novel with the central character being Violette Toussaint and set in the Burgundy region of France.

Violette who along with Philippe her husband a level crossing keeper but now she is a caretaker at a cemetery in Bourgogne. We meet the characters who work at the cemetery and also the visitors many come to make final arrangements and someone to talk to.

Behind the scenes, Violette’s husband has disappeared, but he would normally disappear for days and then return, Violette knew of his affairs but this time it was clear he was not coming back. There is a tragedy in involving there only child which changed Violette’s life forever. Despite all this we have a central character who exudes warmth and humour but the real central theme is love.

When the local police chief Julian Seul came to make arrangements for lying his mother’s ashes on one of the graves, who turns out to be a past lover of his mother a connection is made between Julian and Violette and he hands over to Violette his mother’s journal to read. This opens up painful memories for Violette.

Our central character is a woman you will come to love, she is strong and has so much love to give each visitor to her cemetery. There are moments that will make you laugh but also make your heart burst. Originally written in French and translated by Hildegarde Serle.

Lev also talks about the colourful nature programmes we see on the tv and why they are no substitute for getting out and seeing nature for real.

Along the journey Parikian takes his battered notebook and talks to many people, from keen birdwatchers, nature photographers, dog walkers, the beginners and those just enjoying a walk in the fresh air about their own experiences of nature.

George West Somerset’s Top Cat - the word on the street. in nothing more than a vest and a mini skirt even if it’s going to rain, so they can’t feel the cold.

How I’d wish for some peace and quiet, however I know I could find a quiet spot somewhere if only he’d turn the heating up.

Autumn had arrived and that sudden shift in temperature just puts the seal on those warm summer days. It’s not the daytime so much but the evenings, that sudden chill and the dampness in the air.

Truth is I can put up with it all. What really drives me nuts is the bickering that goes on every year about October time. She, (my adopted mother so to speak), wants the heating on whereas he, (my adopted master) wants it off until we are on the verge of hypothermia. “I’m freezing”, she says, “Well put a jumper on”, he replies. I have to say the girls agree with their mother as I do.

“Have you turned the thermostat up”, he’d shout to her. “No I bloody haven’t”, she would shout back down the stairs. “Well someone has, the thermostat is suddenly gone up to 24 degrees, you could roast a chicken at that temperature, it must be the one of the girls, I’ll have words with them when they come in from school, they don’t have to pay the bills, that’s the trouble”, He moans on.

What they haven’t sussed out is that I worked out what the thermostat is and where it is. It’s that’s little white box screwed to staircase in the hall and if I squeeze my leg through the bannister, I can just reach it. I don’t how to turn it up or down yet but I worked out when I hit the right side there is this little ‘boom’ noise in the airing cupboard and it’s gets hotter, but that’s our little secret. Anyway I don’t think it’s fair, how am I expected to where a jumper?
