We have some great features in the magazine this issue. It ceases to amaze me what people get up to outside their working hours. We have covered Karl from Plastic Action, who enjoys setting up scenes using well-known comic heroes. Using detailed plastic models and a lot of creativity he brings everything to life. I went down to Dunster Castle to watch the Taunton Garrison, resplendent in costumes from the English Civil War period, complete with muskets and canon. They cover other periods in our history too. If fancy yourself as a Roundhead give them a call, they would be only too pleased to see you. We spent a morning at the Bishops Lydeard Watermill. They have been awarded top marks from the Tourist Board and rightly so. It is remarkable that it took about 14 years to resurrect the waterwheel and bring it back to life. Then to build this incredible museum of rural crafts with its lifelike figures. That is just the start, for there are motor cars, bikes and so many other collectables. It is like the Tardis, there is so much to see in such a small space. Once you have been round try one of Mrs. Back’s cream teas, they are delicious. If you know of someone who has hidden talents, or you belong to a group and want more members, please give us a ring. We are always on the lookout for those hidden gems too, those special places that make Taunton so special. Well, whatever you get up… enjoy the summer. Hopefully you’re reading this and the sun is shining.

Taunton Centre on Market Day c1890. With Nick Chipchase Clearly a nice day here on a Wednesday or Saturday when the Parade market was held. The ladies have their parasols. The livestock market was held on Castle Green and fruit and vegetables and meat sold in the Guildhall on the left. A new market site was opened at Priory Bridge Road in 1929 and everything was moved there into purpose built accommodation. In turn this site outlived its usefulness and like certain other things was moved to Bridgwater.

After nearly 1,000 years Taunton ceased to be a market town and the Priory Road site ( Firepool ) has been derelict ever since .The Parade market evolved over the years. Originally gas lit , it saw electric lighting installed in 1885 when fourteen Thomson-Houston arc lamps were erected mainly for individual traders. Permanent installations took place in May 1886. This being the first public electric supply system in Taunton and the South West. Motor taxis first appeared in 1908 and the first taximeter in Taunton came in 1917. A refreshment kiosk was erected to serve market visitors under the Kinglake Memorial. Sadly Taunton lost most of its distinctive architecture to be replaced by ‘anytown’ modern buildings which now surround the Parade. On the left

we have the Guildhall better known as The Victoria Rooms. This had a large back entrance in Corporation Street. During the war the building housed a British Restaurant and helped serve the market being opened as ‘The New Market’ in 1821. The Victoria Rooms was demolished in 1963 long after the Market House arcades were removed in the 1930’s. Beyond the shop, whose window seems to be obscured by sheets, is The Corn Exchange which opened as a fish market in 1854. A cinema ran here before WW2 known affectionately as ‘The Bug House’. This building was demolished in1937. The fine memorial which served as a market cross was funded by the Kinglake family. It was erected in 1867. In 1934 the corporation decided to ‘remove’ the Kinglake Memorial and it was chalked up to give
the impression that it would be rebuilt elsewhere. Sadly this was not to be and it seems that only the top survived to be placed in a garden at Kingston St. Mary. Many other fine Taunton buildings have met the same fate including the old police station which was opposite the current building which now seems to be little used and originally part of Taunton Gaol that itself much reduced. The Taunton Courier referred to the old police station to be “Too old and ugly for the Twentieth Century”. Such is heritage destroyed. Gone, too, is the fine old bank building which stood at the corner of Hammet Street. One small monument that escaped destruction is the granite drinking fountain that used to be at the top of East Reach. You will see it close to the new cafe in Vivary Park.

Last season saw The Peacocks gain their highest finishing position in the club’s history, narrowly missing the top spot to Weymouth FC by a point and then losing to Poole Town on penalties in the play offs. It was an incredible first season in the Evo-Stik League South Premier Division It proved a highly successful evening for Peacocks’ striker Andrew ‘Rocky’ Neal when the club held their Presentation Dinner at Somerset County Cricket Club in May. The livewire frontman who only signed for Town last summer walked off with five awards including the Supporters’ Player and coveted Player’s Player of the Year, beating off competition from Ryan Brett and Lloyd Irish who filled the next two positions in both categories. Neal also won the Top Goalscorer accolade after netting a superb 36 goals plus the Somerset County Gazette Press Writers’ Player of the Season. Brett won the Champagne Performer for the second successive campaign, given for the most Man of the Match and Player of the Month awards during the season, whilst Lewis Hall won Goal of the Season for his superlative strike at home to Salisbury, just pipping Ed Palmer’s gigantic free kick from inside his own half against Harrow. It has been a busy couple of months since then and it’s only a few weeks before a string of pre-season friendlies. Rob Dray and his backroom team continue to shape the squad for the upcoming season. The club are delighted to announce that former captain Jamie Price has returned to the club following 3 seasons with Tiverton Town. He’s known for his versatility and combative nature and provides Rob Dray with options in the heart of the defence or at wingback where he can drive deep into the opponents half. With Jamie’s return to his hometown club, he become their fourth summer arrival following the acquisitions of Jamie Short, Josh Grant and Naby Diallo. Chairman Kevin Sturmey added, “I am very pleased to see Rob has secured another defender which has virtually cemented our squad for the coming season. Jamie Price is one of the best footballers to have ever come out of Taunton and Jamie came to see us for a chat to discuss this potential move. He clearly wants to be here, looks much

fitter than I have seen him before and he impressed me with his maturity and desire to be back at Taunton Town. We have known each other a long time, in life we all learn and I believe Jamie has learned a lot and will come back to us as a better person. He is a class player with undoubted talent and hopefully help us achieve our ambitions.” Town will remain in the Southern League Premier Division South and will look forward to facing a host of new clubs in the 2019/20 season. Manager Rob Dray looks forward to the Peacocks’ new league campaign following the recent league announcement. “It looks like it’s going to be another competitive league next term. There’s an increase in regional teams so there will be more derbies which is always great for supporters. It will be similar to last year where most teams on their day will be able to beat each other and the way that some clubs are recruiting and spending shows that they don’t want to get left behind early on”.

British Empire Medal for PC Tony Freeman in Queen’s Birthday Honours A veteran Somerset beat manager has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. PC Tony Freeman – a former commando – who has for the past 14 years been supporting the community in Bridgwater has spent the whole of his 17-year career in policing in the same town in West Somerset. Prior to joining the police, Tony, who is known as Tex, spent more than 12 years as a Royal Marine Commando. He worked on the G8 summit – the annual meeting between leaders from eight of the most powerful countries in the world – when it was held in County Fermanagh in 2013. He was among a contingency of police officers who travelled to Northern Ireland to support the policing operation. Tony also supported Avon and Somerset Police’s response to the disorder in Bristol in 2011 and received a Gold Commander’s commendation for his work during the Somerset Levels flooding emergency response in 2014. Outside his police work he has been a dedicated supporter of local charities and projects in Taunton and surrounding area. He has raised £23,000 for various charities, including completing four London Marathons, as well as three 100 mile Olympic cycle rides (Ride London 100). He is currently approaching the two thirds mark in his bid to complete 22 press-ups each day over a 12-month period, which is posted on social media, to raise awareness of PTSD with money raised going to Combat Stress. Additionally, he has supported numerous other local projects, including the completion of a new MUGA and revamped tennis court on behalf of the parish council in his village near Taunton, as well as supporting local football clubs as a Coaches Liaison Officer/ Coach. Tony is married and he and wife Donna have two teenage boys aged 13 and 17 years.

Although he has little free time with his day job and on-going community work, he enjoys watching football and motorcycle racing. Tony said: “I am overwhelmed and extremely humbled and honoured by this award, I would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported me in my projects or has donated to any of my charity events.” Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: “I am thrilled for Tex. He is a wonderful example of a member of the policing family who does so much work to help the local community, where he works. “He is real-life ‘action man’ having spent more than a decade in the tough and challenging role of a Royal Marine Commando. During his police career he has been involved in many demanding roles to help protect the public. Tony also emerged as one of our stars in BBC TV’s popular daytime “Neighbourhood Blues” documentary series, which turned the spotlight on Avon and Somerset Police. But rather remarkably he has still found time to dedicate working towards supporting community-based projects, as well as burying himself in stamina-sapping fundraising events for local and national charities,” said the Chief Constable. Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “This well-deserved British Empire Medal just shows how much Tex means to his community and is testament to his excellent local policing, fundraising and community work. I know from speaking to residents that Tony is making a difference every day because they tell me. To serve both his country and his community with such passion, commitment and enthusiasm is a real accomplishment. There are not enough people like Tony in the world and I am delighted that he has been recognised, it is truly deserved.”

The British Red Cross in Somerset When many people think of the British Red Cross, their thoughts turn to Emergency Response work overseas or First Aid. The emblem is recognised all over the world and it symbolises impartial help and assistance to those in need. However not everyone will be aware that there is a huge range of services helping people in crisis, right here in the UK; from supporting people after a stay in hospital, preparing and responding to emergencies, to reuniting families across the globe. In Somerset services include Support at Home, Home Intervention Service, Transport Support, Assisted Discharge Service at both Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital and Mobility Aids. Like any charity, the British Red Cross is dependent on fundraising and donations to survive, as well as the amazing efforts of a team of dedicated volunteers across the county. Support at Home Somerset This service offers up to six weeks of practical and emotional support to people who have recently been discharged from hospital. The service is available to individuals who are 18 or over and live in Somerset. The service helps people regain their confidence after a hospital stay allowing them to improve their quality of life and to live independently in their community. The service aims to: •
Reduce the risk of re-admission to hospital

Reduce social isolation by contacting and helping to organise longer term support
•
Reduce pressure on the hospital
The Support at Home team visit around 35 people a month. Volunteer assistance includes supporting people with their shopping, contacting other organisations within the community that can provide further help, providing welfare checks and taking people to health appointments. Lucy Hays who is the Service Manager says “The value this service adds to both the recipient and volunteer is immeasurable. At a time when people feel most vulnerable, they are helped through the power of kindness.” Our service users have said: “More than just shopping, good company. Marvellous, I can’t thank you enough, the service is almost too good to be true.” “Having help with my grocery shopping was a godsend. The helper was lovely, my anxiety dissipated.” Anyone can become a volunteer, we are all individuals and come with our own strengths. People appreciate the support from the British Red Cross and they are happy to accept help from our amazing volunteers. Without the time that our volunteers give to others, we wouldn’t have this service here in Somerset. Our volunteers are compassionate, caring and willing to support those in need. Bishops Lydeard Mill Where time has stopped, but the wheel has not.
If you wanted to define ‘A hidden Gem’ then look no further that the Old Mill at Bishops Lydeard. It is stunning! Not just a watermill, but a collection of items from a bygone era from old tools to motorcars. Inside you will see meticulous settings of old rural trades like coopers, thatcher’s, saddlers and blacksmiths, all in their own setting with mannequins to give it all an ‘almost real’ snap shot in time. There are others too, a Victorian woman doing her ironing, a 1940’s woman and her ARP friend and a small Victorian schoolgirl with desk, ink and pen. Give yourself a good couple of hours to appreciate this wonderous place and afterwards have a cream tea in the café. Charlie & Yvonne Back are its current owners. Charlie took over the mill in 1976 but sadly his wife passed away two years later. Charlie then spent the next 14 years restoring the mill and bringing it back into working order. He has since added a museum and remarried, and at 83 years old he’s still adding new exhibits all the time.

What makes this place so appealing is the attention to detail and the care taken over each exhibit. Where most museums are a showcase of old items, Charlie has a skill that’s brings everything to life with breathtaking detail and transports you back in time. It’s so much more than a watermill. What adds to its appeal is that Charlie, a modest man, has created everything here basically on his own and is a testament to his dedication and skill. Although privately owned Charlie and Yvonne have raised over £160,000 for national and local charities. If you have never visited here, please make the effort for you will not be disappointed for you or your family.

George Taunton’s Top Cat - the word on the street. The weather so far this year hasn’t been as nice as the last. I don’t know what these humans has been up to, but one minute I’m panting behind my cosy tree in the shade and the next I’m running behind it dodging the rain with wet grass stuck to my feet. Last week it was so miserable that I was in the house all day. For some reason my owner was hogging the sofa with some shiny object on their lap. I hopped up next to him and had a good sniff. He pushed me away, but I could feel some heat from it and my owner was bashing it about. I snuggled myself next to him for a good snooze. He kept moving about and the making lots of noise and tutting. I just wanted to get forty winks. The weird warbling box downstairs started and he suddenly jumped up and left the room. Why do these humans have to fidget so much? I’ll quite happily not move for a good six hours. I thought I would see what the fuss was all about so gave the whirring thing another good sniff. I climbed onto it and could feel a warm breeze around my feet. It felt so nice. Why didn’t I have one of these I thought! I snuggled down on top, tight in a ball, just managing to tuck my whole body onto the warm surface. I could hear him mumble downstairs as my eyes got heavy and I drifted off, the whirring now aiding. As I dozed I began to think about some news I’d heard on the streets. Apparently this ‘Brian the Cat’ is some sort of ginger hero and somewhat of a celebrity in one of the larger territories in town. It’s been ‘Brian this’ and ‘Brian that’ for the past few months. What’s so special about this dude? Apparently, he is adored by thousands of humans.
I expect he is hand fed salmon or nibbles on gourmet biccies. One thing for sure it that I’m top cat in this town. If he gets too big for his mittens then I’ll have to send some scouts out there to see how things are looking. I mean, all it’s good news for us gingers but I can’t have people thinking I’ve lost my nerve. I’ll leave it for now I thought, best good some sleep while I’m not disturbed. Just be ready to take action if I need to. It was so warm on my body that I was in heaven. I could feel my mind transcend into a feeling that only normally catnip can reach. My whiskers twitched, phase one towards my cat nap. Then... “Ahhhh, get off GEORGE”. I woke up in an instant, a mad panic as I scrambled off, fell onto the sofa, then onto the floor. My body was moving quicker than by mind. He was really unhappy for some reason. Selfish I call it. If anything I was keeping it warm for him. He should be grateful. The rain had finally stopped. I didn’t want to be near him anymore with his moods, noise and constant getting up and down. As I left my door I saw Patch sat on the back fence. “Alright Patch, much going on?” I said. “Well George, I’m on look out” he replied. “Look out for what? That sassy tortoiseshell Missy at no.7?”. “No George, apparently that ‘Brian the Cat’ has spread some viral thing across the town, maybe the world” he shouted. The things us cats have to put up with. Those humans have no idea. Well, it’s been a few weeks now and nothing to report. A lot of hot air from these humans. Oh, I’m not allowed near his ‘heat pad’ anymore. Best hope the sun comes out and I can lie behind my tree without too much distraction.

It’s always good to have a hobby. An escape from the day to day that you can put some energy into. Something that gives you real joy. We met up with Taunton born and bred toy collector Karl Smallridge. He is the founder of Plastic Action UK. A group of action figure collectors and photographers, who love all things toys. Karl is joined by his good friends Tom and Ben who wanted to create a website as a space where they can share all their passions in one place: action figures, toy photography and their very own creations.

If you like the smell of burning black gunpowder, loud bangs and dressing up in period costume then look no further than Taunton Garrison. I met them at Dunster Castle firing off muskets and canon from the battlements and frightening every dog for a four mile radius. A small price to pay for the chance to hear the authentic sound of the Civil War and costumes in such an authentic setting. They are always looking for new members and it’s not just a men’s pastime, there are plenty of women members too. The Taunton Garrison can provide a wide range of entertainment both military and civilian from the late sixteenth to late seventeenth century. They perform various Living History skills, also small skirmishes and weapons demonstrations. They cover three main historical periods - The Spanish Armada of 1588, the English Civil War of the 1640's and the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685. For their Spanish Armada events, they portray an Elizabethan Trained Band (local militia) that has been called out to protect England’s shore against the menace of the Spanish empire. For their English Civil War events, they take on the role of both Royalist and Parliamentarian (depending on the event) and show how people fought, lived and died.

Their most popular venue is Dunster Castle where they are holding the castle for the King against the Roundheads besieging us from outside. Their latest period concerns the Monmouth Rebellion (1685) where the Duke of Monmouth (illegitimate son of Charles II) landed in Lyme and tried to kick his catholic uncle James II off the throne. They act as both the Somerset Militia (very smart in our red coats) and the rebels (very rough but well-armed). All time periods can include: weapons displays, cannon firing, the dreaded barber-surgeon, musketry, marching camp and living history. They have appeared on television several times including: Time Team at Buckingham Palace, Tony Robinson’s Walking through History and Michael Portillo’s Railway Journeys. They have also put on small plays and sketches for special events and occasions. They pride themselves on their historical accuracy and getting the public (young and old) involved as much as possible. July is National Ice Cream Month. Celebrate with this homemade raspberry ripple. Ingredients 250g raspberries / 225g caster sugar / 2 large eggs / 4 egg yolks 600ml double cream / Raspberries or other fruit for serving Method Place the raspberries in a pan with 2 tbsp of the sugar. Cook on a medium heat until sugar dissolves into the pulp. Simmer for 5 mins until thickened, then push the pulp through a sieve into a bowl and discard the seeds. Place the eggs, egg yolks and remaining sugar into a bowl. Whisk with an electric whisk hand whisk to combine everything, then place over a pan of gently simmering water – the bowl should not touch the water. Beat with the electric whisk for 3-4 mins until thick and pale. Remove from heat and continue beating with the whisk until cool. In another bowl, whisk the cream until it forms soft peaks, then gently fold into the cool egg mix until just combined. Pour the mix into a shallow container or dish that can be frozen. Just before you freeze the mixture gently swirl the raspberry puree through, cover with cling film and freeze for at least 6 hrs. Remove from the freezer about 20 minutes before serving. Place scoops of the ice cream into bowls with extra raspberries or other fruit. It's also gorgeous in cones.

Now resident in Taunton, he is keen to share his knowledge with local enthusiasts. The Gin Fizz & Food Festival at Woodlands Castle, Taunton, on 2nd June was an amazing event. I presented an Introduction to Gin, and Cocktails to Make at Home, with Mike Sweetman, Past National Vice-President, UK Bartenders Guild. There were eight presentations in all, including Jim Fisher of the Exeter Cookery School, demonstrating Pan-Fried Duck Breast with Juniper Sauce. Many stands offered gin tastings from the region, including Wicked Wolf, Eighteen, Quick, Exeter/Granny Garbutt’s, Thunderflower, Grandad’s Revenge, Rock , On the Rocks and plus mobile bars and food stands. Taste with Martin offered gins from outside the region - Polo Gin (Wales), Aviation and Death’s Door (USA), Porters (Scotland), and Fifty Pounds (London). Thanks to importers Marussia Beverages for their sponsorship of the last 4 gins. There was also Wayford, a local sparkling wine made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes. Also, Pedrino single serve Spritzers, which are ideal for summer. Three flavours, consisting of Vermouth, Sherry and Ruby Port, all blended with tonic and citrus botanicals – served just over ice, but to which spirits (especially gin) may be added. Recently I came across a social media post about Wine Wize, a new local enterprise run by an old friend, Stuart Avison. Largely thanks to the efforts of CAMRA supporters, we now have many real ale breweries, large and small. However, there is major concern over the massive number of pub closures – estimated as 1 every 12 hours. There was a discussion about the category of Craft Beer (a type of keg beer). In the 1970s, national keg beers - for example, Watney’s Red Barrel and Double Diamond - were pasteurised (i.e. the yeasts were killed), and then the beer was artificially carbonated, producing utterly tasteless beers. Most quality Craft Ales today are made quite differently, and are extremely popular.
CORNER GIN RICKEY
For an easy to make delicious summer cocktail, here is Mike Sweetman’s classic Gin Rickey, a variation of the Mojito: •
50ml gin (your choice)
•
20ml fresh lime juice
•
15ml gomme (sugar) syrup - buy ready made from a shop/online, or make your own*
•
12 mint leaves (give them a slap!)
•
Plenty of ice, and top with soda (or sparkling spring water)
*Normally 2 parts sugar and 1 part water – say 100g & 50g. Pour water and half of caster sugar, into saucepan, using low heat. Gently stir until most of sugar has dissolved (liquid will look mostly clear). Add rest of sugar, stirring as you pour it in. Keep going until no granules of sugar are visible. Once cool, pour into bottle(s). Will keep for several months in fridge, although fine to leave at room temperature.

What Is Chi Gung? I love to practise chi gung (or qigong). It’s the mother of taichi, the basis of this beautiful ancient practice which originates in China. It’s all about health, wellbeing and personal development - not competition or complexity. When time is short, I may do just a few minutes but it’s still enough to give a boost to my energy levels. On more relaxed days, I can indulge for an hour or so in the morning followed by shorter periods as the day goes on. The simple exercises are gentle and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. As well as being a physical exercise, chi gung can also be seen as a meditative practice but with a unique dynamic ‘outgoing’ quality that supports day-to-day living. I’ve found it cuts through negativity, fatigue and tension - any sort of resistance that blocks achievement or ‘being the person I want to be’. The challenge we engage with in a chi gung class is just these simple exercises. Is it possible to move with fluidity, confidence and grace whilst staying grounded, aligned and connected?
Or see where there’s limitation and strain whatever the cause: physical, emotional or psychological? A skilled instructor is able to see blockages in the body and show how they can be improved if not overcome. And with dedicated practice chi gung can be used to re-programme ourselves to respond and act in a new more positive way - without habitual tension and insecurity. Eventually a perception of your own chi or life-energy develops. That’s an awareness of the natural, warming energy within that, like any good mother, protects and nurtures. On leaving a class I feel energised, more flowing and creative, calm but not introverted, and far more able to successfully navigate my life.

The debut novel by Elizabeth Macneal is set in 1850’s London and is a real page turner in no uncertain terms and is set to be one of the big hits of 2019. Hyde park is the centre of attention as the greatest spectacle London has ever seen is being erected which is the Great Exhibition Somewhere in the crowd two people meet a fleeting moment for Iris this has already been lost as she is too busy watching everything that is going on but for Silas this is one moment he will remember. He is a collector. But no ordinary collector. He has set his sights already on Iris. Silas is a taxidermist, a collector of the strange and beautiful. Iris is now in real danger. Our main character left working with her twin sister, Rose in a doll factory to become an artist’s assistant with Louis Frost who is part of the Pre-Raphaelite circle and he promises to teach her how to paint but not all goes to plan for Iris. During this time that Iris becomes friends with a local child who goes by the names of Albie who also does the same for the collector that is the creepy Silas Reed. You really warm to Albie who has struggles of his own. It is Silas who now takes his fantasising over Iris to a dangerous level. He wants her love and he will not be denied. A story of love, art and obsession. A dark chilling gothic tale.
Writing this just as Somerset County Cricket Club have won the 2019 Royal London Cup at Lords. Their first trophy since 2005. How appropriate then my non-fiction review is of the Somerset County Cricket Club President Brian Rose. Somerset County Cricket Club was formed in 1875 but struggled to win honours. Brian Rose started his career at Somerset in 1969 and was captain of the county side from the years 1978 to 1984 in what was their golden era winning five trophies in the six years as captain and was close to winning more. During this time the names of Botham, Garner, Richards, Roebuck, Marks and Denning put fear into many a side, this was a glorious period in the counties history with many trips to Lords for finals. Through the words of Brian Rose himself he tells the story of his life our very own county side. This really is the inside story. Brian tells the story from his apprenticeship to captain of the side from the glory years to the sad break up in 1986 despite this Brian stayed on with the county as director of cricket until 2012. Told in his own words with honest and at times with humour. Anyone who loves the sound of leather on willow our Summer game will enjoy reading Rosey: My Life with Somerset Cricket.

Late Night - 6/10
I’d heard good things about this movie but the first half wasn’t great thankfully the second half made up for it. It’s a drama about friendship, love, desire, failure and success. It’s about reckoning, it’s about love for friends and possibly more - it’s about coming out and discovery of sexuality and repression.
An interesting story about the treatment of ageing females in commercial television.
It has a great script with colourful characters. Ultimately it’s a feel good movie. It’s ok. It ticks the boxes, kills 90 minutes and keeps the children happy but beyond that did it add anything to the genre, will it be a classic ? No.
Warning! Don’t go to see this expecting another Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s a completely different type of movie. It’s closer to Mamma Mia in its jukebox approach to a musical film. Ultimately, the film was the story of longing to be loved; by his parents, friends , lovers and the lack of achievement of that love and replacing it with drugs and alcohol.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters - 2/10
The Hustle - 8/10
Let’s be honest you need to watch a film like this with a pinch of salt - this film would have been ok as a b movie with no expectations. But trying to be a blockbuster it fails. It would have been better as a comedy.
I really wasn’t expecting much from this, and certainly wasn’t expecting it to measure up to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, but it did. It was really good, funny and enjoyable. It had an excellent cast with Anne Hathaway playing the classy ‘English’ con artist juxtaposed against the ‘trashy’ Australian Rebel Wilson.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 - 5/10
Ma 4/10 This had all the right ingredients and could have been so good, but it was just too slow at getting to the finale. All the usual hallmarks of a teen horror flick, but you knew what was going to happen it just too far, too long, to get there.
Dark Phoenix 5/10 Rather than this being the last in the series, it felt like a reboot - back to the beginning - same characters, different actors. Good cast with Jennifer Lawrence, James McCoy and Nicholas Holt. Best line - women always save the men it should be called the X Women !
Aladdin - 8/10
It was by no means perfectly executed, but it was easy enough to see why and where the story came from.
Rocketman - 7/10
Long Shot - 1/10 I would say the first 20 minutes were actually ok. They had merit, they had comedy, they were enjoyable and then it goes downhill. To take a line from the film ‘it was never going to work’. It didn’t.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum - 2/10 It you want to go and see a really bad movie this is the one for you. It is possible to make a video game film actually enjoyable and with a plot. Take Assassins Creed for example .- and the first John Wick film was good but this was bad and if you didn’t like John Wick 2 you’ll hate this.
A visual masterpiece. It’s well worth seeing. Now I’ve got to be honest, I know the story well, you know the story and you’ve probably seen the 1992 version with Robin Williams. I actually haven’t, but the song ‘Whole new world’ seemed very familiar! It’s a family feel good movie well worth the watch. You won’t leave disappointed.
