Then on the flip side we had the heatwave last year; months of glorious sunshine. It does make me wonder what weather phenomenon we will be having this year.

As I’m writing this the sun has made an appearance, and it is quite warm. As I look out our office window, overlooking the gardens here at Hestercombe, there is a sudden upsurge in visitors emerging from their winter hibernation.

Funny how a bit of sun and warmth makes you want to put on your walking boots and get outside. The West Somerset Railway opens up in March, so maybe a trip to the seaside or a day out at Dunster Castle is in order. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped Ritchie Cridge, who we featured in our last magazine. He is running 5K every day for a year to raise money for St.Margaret’s Hospice, in remembrance of his grandfather. He started in in July last year and finishes on the 30th June this year. He had one donation of £365 from a very kind reader who dropped off a cheque at our office at Hestercombe House. The support he has gained from our article has been heart-warming. It’s led to other papers covering the story and now radio and tv interest. That’s the kind of positivity that gives our business a purpose. Galmington c 1905. With Nick Chipchase I have lived in Galmington for some 40 years though now we think of the area as Comeytrowe. This image shows “The Galmington Inn” before its Art Deco conversion and series of name changes. Now “ The Shepherd’s Rest “ though it must be a long time since shepherds loitered here. Between the pub and “ The Manor “ we see the end of “ The Rank “, mostly agricultural workers dwellings, only part of one wall remains. Across the road we see Robert Shattock’s grocery store ( demolished 1960 ) now replaced by a modern series of shops and post office. In 1905 Galmington was a hamlet and part of the parish of Bishop’s Hull parish. Local traders included a mason, haulier, coach builder and the “Ag. Labs” so often encountered by those researching family history in these parts. The old route into Galmington from Trull Road at Wheatleigh House followed a steep lane the locals called “ Roman Road “. This ended at the river near Ramshorn Bridge ( now isolated from any stream ). We youngsters called it “ Watersplash “ as cars had to drive along the river bed for some distance. The route then followed Hovelands Lane to emerge at the old cottages opposite The Shepherd’s Rest.The locals called the lane “ Dick Aish Lane “ after a resident of Hovelands Farm ,a cattle dealer, who got very drunk in the local pub and it was said that his horse usually found its own way home. 4.
An early name for Galmington was “ Gaunton “ ( 1809, S map ) . In 1892 St Micheal’s Church hall was dedicated a gift of Miss Cleave of Haines Hill. The old concrete church hall in Hoveland Lane was demolished when a new church opened in Comeytrowe centre. Galmington Social Club took the concrete supports and tiles for a new building at the rear of The Trident but the structures were too badly damaged for reuse. The tiles are now on my shed roof. Early village social life revolved around the school house in Comeytrowe Lane since converted to a house.Here met the local Sunday School, Band of Hope concerts, Christmas parties and wedding receptions. During the war the school house served as a dispersal point for evacuees. It was replaced by the church hall in Hovelands Lane in 1961 originally corrugated iron dating to 1892 but later concrete. Many Galmington folk worked at the brick works now Galmington Trading Estate. I remember the huge hole that existed there. Galmington children went to school at Bishop’s Hull in Gypsy Lane which opened in 1893. The present school opposite the manor opened in 1978 despite angry demonstrations regarding the dangerous crossing of Wellington New Road at the time. In 1905 there was a pleasant walk across Galmington Fields to the outskirts of Taunton at Park St. How things have changed.

The countdown is on as we enter the final 2 months of the football season with Taunton Town still leading the Evo-Stik South Premier Division by 4 points. It’s an incredible achievement for the club who earnt promotion to Step 3 of the NonLeague pyramid last year by storming the Evo-Stik West Division by 19 points. Should the Peacocks secure back to back promotions and a second title victory, they will rise to the National League for the first time in their history and teams such as Torquay United and Bath City will await. Town are already planning for the future by tying down 9 of their first team squad to contracts for next year. Ben Adelsbury, Ryan Brett, Shane White, Ollie Chamberlain, Lloyd Irish, Pierce Mitchell, Ed Palmer, Dan Sullivan and top scorer Andrew Neal have all committed their futures to the club. There is even more excitement at the Viridor Stadium to come with the visit of Manchester United Legends on 7th April 2019. The Countdown to Somerset Day 2019 begins This year’s Somerset Day takes place on Saturday 11th May 2019. So get the date firmly marked in your calendar as there’ll be lots of exciting events and activities happening all over Somerset! Now in its fifth year, Somerset Day is quickly growing in popularity, and people all over the county are coming together to mark all that’s fantastic about this wonderful county, putting on a celebration too good to miss! Over the weekend of 11th May, there will be events taking place throughout Somerset, and a full programme will be available on Somerset Day’s new website at www.somersetday.com From craft fairs to food fairs, tea parties to cider and cheese tastings, there’ll be something for everyone. In 2018 over 200 events took place – this year we’re expecting many more as word about Somerset Day spreads! The two day event is now scheduled to be held at Taunton Racecourse on an annual basis, every September. The show is designed to showcase the very best that Somerset has to offer with the emphasis on individual and community participation.
Celebrity Chef, Lesley Waters is hosting cookery demonstrations throughout the weekend and creating a range of dishes using local produce available from the many Artisan producers in the food and drinks hall. We will also have plenty of street foods to enjoy with local beer and cider provided. The club formed late in 2014 when 3 friends set the wheels in motion to start an adult team and bring competitive American football back to Somerset. It’s safe to say that over the next 4 years the momentum behind the Wyverns has grown to an impressive level. The 3 founding players have become a managing committee, 60+ adult team players, 20+ youth and junior team players, 10 coaches and a large network of volunteers. The vision of the original 3 was realised when the governing body, the British American Football Association, confirmed league entry for the 2018 season. The Somerset Wyverns went on to play 8 games in 2018 across the Southwest and the Midlands. The season ended with the Wyverns sitting mid-table with a 3-4-1 record, bested to the playoffs by 1 point, by a team that they drew with! For the 2019 season, the Somerset Wyverns are building on a positive start to life in the league on and off the field. They have aligned themselves with the Somerset Chamber of Commerce and put together a very professional sponsorship package to engage with organisations across Somerset. They are strengthening their relationship with Taunton Deane Borough Council and Deane DLO to stage all team home games at Victoria Park in the centre of Taunton. Their home field is a well maintained 100-yard field with traditional “Y” frame American Football posts. The adult team will host a minimum

of 4 home games in 2019 while the Youth/Junior teams look to complete their association process and compete Home or Away in nationally recognised leagues and competitions. New players are welcomed every week, no experience is necessary but you will need studded boots and a gum shield. George Taunton’s Top Cat - the word on the street. It’s not easy being top cat in your territory. You are the one who has to sort out all the disputes and threats. It seems now that the park area is out of bounds, well at night time anyway. We have a fox in the area and it’s not safe for any cat to take on a fox. On top of that there is a new boy in town trying to take my position, putting up a bit of challenge the other night. He’s a big boy mind, bit of Persian in there somewhere. So, there I was checking out the neighbours garden, when he appears on the fence opposite. I stare him out for half an hour. “No, he just isn’t getting the message here Ginge”, I say to myself. Phase two into action, let’s make a few noises, I’m good at noises. Let’s start with a few low growls. Ha! got his fur up anyway, but he’s hanging in there. Phase three, more intimidating noises, no he’s started to growl back. This boy needs some needs a lesson in, ‘Know thy territory’. I manoeuvre slowly onto the edge of the swimming pool, very slowly, eyes fixed, he could pounce any minute. He now moves closer and stops at the other side of the pool. We both have the stare off, just waiting for one of us to give up. Phase four, and taking a risk I quickly lower my head down, showing him I submit and now he lunges forward like lighting. What he doesn’t realise is that the pool cover won’t support his weight, he runs at me and disappears into the water whilst been enveloped by PVC. He survived, but he’s not been back for a fight since. However he has another plan of attack. This time he’s out to impress my patch. He’s up the park, strolling around like he owns the place.
All I hear is, “Don’t see you up the park much Ginger, since the nasty fox is about”. Yeah!, he’s up there showing off to the ladies. It was just turning 7pm and dusk was settling in. I had my evening meal, chicken supreme, one of my favourites, and made my way out. All I could hear was all this chit-chat going on. Perhaps Big Boy been eaten by the fox. The story goes that he’s alive and strolled out of the park after catching a squirrel. Now believe me, they are not to be messed with squirrels, they are exceptionally quick and bite your ears. I have to say I am impressed but worse, so are the ladies. This is not good. It’s dark now and I‘ll have to show some form of bravery and head for the park. I have all my senses on full alert, any sound or smell and I’m up some tree smartish. No sign though of Freddie the Fox, so I keep walking across the park and into the meadow, then across the road to a disused chimney by the old factory. I need time to think. Nothing springs to mind. I start to head back when I see Mr. Fox, stalking me, crouching in the dark, ready to pounce. I have nowhere to run, I’m frozen to the spot but ready to give a fist full of claws. He’s still there, crouched, he runs at me full on. When all of a sudden a car comes out of nowhere and hits him. Bang! It wasn’t easy for a cat but I dragged him back to the street to the astonishment of everyone, including Big Boy, who indicates in a cat way he’s well beaten. If you can take out a fox any contender is going to back down.

I first met Sam Gaden over 18 years ago when we both studied Communication Design at ‘S.C.AT’. He was always smiling, friendly, positive and driven by his love of art. It was here that he was encouraged to loosen up his technique and develop his style. Today Sam is a well-known street artist with a strong following not only in Taunton, but further afield in the urban art scene. Sam is Taunton born and bred, and a real champion of the town he calls home. He was a founding member of Taunton’s original graffiti crew, Fresh Rotten Apples, in 2001. The name was chosen to mark their cider country roots.
“I’ve grown up here. Some people moan about the town and move away, rather than doing something about it. We wanted to spruce up the town and inject a bit of colour into our lives. Let’s celebrate where we live”. Sam told me. People often think of ‘graffiti’ as vandalism, without permission. Traditionally it is stylised writing, an anonymous tool used to express yourself and your point of view on almost anything, including politics, personal expression, culture etc. “I chose ‘Aerosol Art’ as the name for my business. It’s gaining in popularity and people
are being more creative and expressive with art form, to push the boundaries of what can be achieved. You can really transform a space and breathe positive energy into a community. “I like to push myself. I don’t paint the same thing twice. I want to keep my artwork diverse. When I paint for myself, I am developing my skills and honing my craft. I look for inspiration everywhere. Art is always going to be subjective, which is part of the joy to spark discussion”.

Cooper Associates Group has announced the launch of its charitable foundation, the Cooper Associates Foundation, which exists to support organisations within the local community. Cooper Associates, formed in 2008, has experienced rapid growth in its first decade. The business consists of three brands; Cooper Associates Mortgages, Cooper Associates Accountants and Cooper Associates Wealth Management, a Senior Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management. The company is already a keen supporter of a number of local organisations and is well known for being the ground naming rights partner at the Cooper Associates County Ground, the home of Somerset County Cricket Club. Tom Abell, captain of Somerset CCC, is a trustee of the Cooper Associates Foundation. We talked to Ros Kirk, Head of People Strategy & Development at Cooper Associates Group, who explained details of the newly formed foundation. This sounds like a fantastic initiative. How will it benefit people locally? “The Cooper Associates Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Cooper Associates Group, acting to support charities through clients and partners associated with the Cooper Associates community. Our giving is guided by themes, with the main focus on children and young people who have special needs through illness or disability, or who are disadvantaged in other ways. We will also look to support other good causes within the Taunton region.”
How will funds be raised? “Funds will be raised in a number of ways. Initially we will rely on our colleagues at Cooper Associates, who are keen to support our charitable Foundation in any way they can. This will include donating from their earnings and organising a variety of fundraising events. We are also hoping someone will follow in the footsteps of Owen Irish, one of our mortgage advisers, and take on an amazing challenge. Owen ran three marathons in three days last year, raising over £5,000 in the process – a fantastic amount of money for an astounding achievement. In addition to this, we will be hosting our first charity ball later in the year.”

Mrs Beeton’s Cold Winter Soup! Ingredients • • • • • •
May I present Mrs Beeton’s Cold Winter Soup – the perfect dish to warm up you ‘cockles’! You see, whilst scouring through my 1906 edition of Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management, there I discovered her ONE and ONLY recipe to be of her very own creation – Benevolent Soup, which was originally known as Useful Soup for Benevolent Purposes. Darlings, the history books dictate that in 1858 England endured a terribly harsh and deathly cold winter. So much so, our charitable, selfless, and kindly Mrs Beeton set up a soup kitchen from her home and served this hearty, meat-based (ox cheek) chunky vegetable, and liquor-laced concoction - in Miss Windsor’s case Thatchers cider! to the hungry, homeless, or destitute folk of Hatch End, Pinner, London. May I add, my revision of this wintery dish is a fabulous fusion between Mrs Beeton’s original 1858 recipe and the 1906 version as noted above – and of course, I followed her instructions and cooking methods thoroughly, thus achieved excellence. And although I scaled down the ingredient measurements considerably, Mrs Beeton’s Cold Winter Soup is ample to serve a large family with leftovers, which one may decanter into a Tupperware dish and pop in the freezer for later. Preparation time: 30-40 mins Cooking time: 3 hours Serves a large family!

2 ox cheeks (request from your butcher) 6 large carrots 1 very large swede 4 stalks of celery 2 huge onions 500ml of any Somerset cider, but I prefer to use Thatchers. • 3 litres of water • 360g red split lentils • 1/2 white cabbage • Large bunch of fresh herbs – such as rosemary, coriander, flat leaf parsley, thyme. • 2 beef stock cubes • 3 vegetable stock cubes Equipage •

Before you start, please lather up your mitts with a jolly good helping of Pears soap! Now you’re squeaky clean, one may prepare the meat by cutting it into cubes. Then chop up the vegetables any way you fancy and set the white cabbage to one side. Transfer the meat to your stew pan, sprinkle with sea salt, pour in the water, and cover with lid. Bring to the boil and skim off the frothy stuff. Reduce the heat to a simmer then crumble the stock cubes into the meaty liquid, add the cider, vegetables, bunch of herbs, and salt and pepper – give it a jolly good stir! Return the lid and simmer gently for approximately 2 hours. Now, carefully spoon in the lentils and white cabbage. Simmer for 1 hour. Once cooked, add salt and pepper to taste. Then serve to your guests from a decorative soup terrine – don’t forget your soup bowls and spoons! Enjoy with a scrumptious glass of Somerset cider – How spiffing!

Wimbleball Sailability is a registered charity and every Wednesday and Friday between May and September we can take you for a sail in our large, safe, sailing dinghies and cater for Wheelchair users in our easy access powerboats. For those with sailing experience you may also be able to sail on your own, or with an experienced “buddy”, to help improve your skills in smaller, stable, especially adapted sailing dinghies. Set against the backdrop of the Scottish Highlands. The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley (Harper Collins) is a good old fashioned murder mystery with realistic characters. It is New Year’s Eve and a group of friends are together at a hunting lodge to celebrate Hogmanay. The lodge is in an isolated part of the Highlands and there is a blizzard setting in.
When Germany invaded the Netherlands on the 10th May 1940 there was in the region of 140,000 Jews living in the country with many arriving to escape from other European countries in fear of the Nazis. By the end of the war over 104,000 were murdered in the deaths camps such as Auschwitz.

This group of friends have known each other since their Oxford University days and they always get together at New Year’s Eve, some of the friends have brought new partners with them all seems to be going well but just under the surface there are secrets and lies. Straight away the reader knows there is something very wrong. A body is discovered and it is clear this is murder. But who is the victim? The author is not going to tell and one by one each of the friends is going to tell their own story in each chapter. As the blizzard rages and they realise they are cut off so no-one is going to be leaving very soon and the police cannot reach them. A murderer is among them and could strike again. Added into the story are the three members of staff who we also get to meet and they also have a story to tell. Atmospheric and as chilly as the snow storm raging around them The Hunting Party is a terrific murder mystery that will keep you guessing until the last page.

The recently announced winner of the 2018 Costa Book Award, The Cut Out Girl by Bart van Es. (Fig Tree/Penguin Books) tells the story of Hesseline ‘Lien’ de Jong who was sent to live with another family just as the Nazis and the Dutch police started to round up the Jews in the country. The author always knew that his grandparents sheltered some of the Jewish children from being taken away, Lien was one of those children. Lien was never to see her parents again. When the police raided the home of the van Eses, Lien had to escape to go and live with another family the van Laars during her stay Lien was abused and raped. Lien’s experiences during the war changed her and some years later she tried to take her own life. Soon after the van Es family decided to sever all ties with Lien. At the time the author contacted Lien she was living in Amsterdam. It was time to tell her story. The Cut Out Girl is superbly written memoir that is also an historical account of the Netherlands during the war but also a story of hope. The Mule 9/10 The story, loosely based on a real life , of a man with everything and nothing to live for . Living his life through regrets and reflections of his past mistakes he almost falls into a position of power and retribution through opportunity for wealth in later life. It's the character that you grow to love and respect although he's clearly on the wrong side of the law but it's the relationships he builds with both law enforcement and hardened drug criminals that mean that no one could do anything but love him .A great drama definitely worth seeing .
Vice 8/10 The casting was superb , the standard of Christian Bale's acting was just superb , if you were impressed with his method and weight loss in preparation for The Mechanic you'll be equally as impressed with his weigh gain for this role . The film is definitely worth seeing it's not the best biopic you'll ever see , it's not best satire you'll ever see but it's worth seeing for Christian Bale's believable performance.
The Favourite 8/10 The central theme was strong with the rivalry between Lady Marlborough ( Rachel Weisz stole the show in this Lady Macbeth type role ) and a rising maid ( played affectionally by Emma Stone ) for the affection both in and out of the bed of a bisexual Queen Anne with the backdrop of conflicting politics surrounding the continuing war with France led by

the national hero and distant relation of Winston Churchill the infamous Duke of Marlborough played excellently by Mark Gatis. Olivia Coleman has come in for a lot of praise for her role as Queen Anne , but it was the suppprting cast who were so good that they stole the limelight , not least Nicholas Holt as the leader of the opposition.
Glass 7/10 This is the conclusion of Unbreakable and Split and if you didn’t realise it was a trilogy then neither did I either ! Although there was a slight clue at the end of Split in the Diner. The stand out performance here was once again James McAvoy - but both Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson were both powerful - and a great supporting cast.
Greenbook 10/10 It is a story of ignorance and one man’s attempt to rise above the hate and violence - like a Ghandi type character his strength came not from the fist but from his conviction that he was right . It was a story of an unlikely friendship where two worlds collided and the master servant relationship was juxtaposed. If you like drama with humour , with laughter and with tears this is the film for you.
Alita - Battle Angle 8/10 If you’re a sci fi fan of such films as Bladerunner , Rollerball & Robocop and generally Philip K Dick add to that some manga , a touch of William Shakespeare’s Romero & Juliet - the standard story of good vs evil with a few twists you’ll love this.
