Editor: Clive Smith clive@wordgetsaround.co.uk

Welcome to the first edition of the Word Gets Around (West Somerset) Magazine. We have published a Taunton version of this magazine for a while, in fact, we are coming up to our fifth birthday in December. We hope you like it. We would like it to contain interesting community features, so if you have any forthcoming events, and it’s for charity, we will list it for free.

Design: Paul Smith paul@wordgetsaround.co.uk Address: Hestercombe House Hestercombe Gardens Cheddon Fitzpaine Taunton, Somerset, TA2 8LQ. Phone: 01823 765045 Artwork to: info@wordgetsaround.co.uk Follow us: _wordgetsaround thewordgetsaround wordgetsaround thewordgetsaround

We welcome your feedback on what you think we should put inside. We ensure that 30% of the magazine is given over to features which are relevant to West Somerset or of general interest. We are solely supported by our advertisers, so please mention our magazine when using their services. Our objective is to support local businesses and share all things positive about West Somerset. We are looking for people to write articles, especially those who have a good historical knowledge and may have a collection of old photographs. Congratulations to Tom Hayes for his winning entry in our photo competition. His sunset of Bossington takes pride of place on our front cover for this first issue. A £50.00 Priddy’s voucher is winging it’s way to him. We would like to thank all those people who submitted their entries. We hope to be running more competitions in the future. Our next issue will be out in January, so if you want to advertise your business across West Somerset, or maybe your charity event, please get in touch. In the meantime I hope the run-up towards Christmas isn’t too stressful and you have a chance to celebrate with family and friends. I hope you enjoy the magazine!

Taunton Deane Male Voice Choir is looking to recruit new members who love to sing. With mixed ability and experience, we aim to positively impact our community and raise funds for charities and events. The county town of Somerset is as different as it gets from the traditional mining or industrial base from which many of our male voice choirs hail, but there has been a flourishing male voice choir in Taunton since 1946. We have three main objectives: ● to preserve the traditions and standards of male voice singing. ● to create a warm, sociable atmosphere for our choir members. ● to assist organisations in raising money for charitable causes. Averaging 10 concerts each year, the choir has hosted concerts in many beautiful locations around Somerset. To celebrate its 70th anniversary, the choir travelled to Taunton’s twin town of Lisieux in France to sing in the magnificent Cathedral Saint-Pierre de Lisieux.

We are delighted to have two patrons, the Mayor of Taunton and the Chair of Somerset West and Taunton Council. We are already looking forward to our 75th Anniversary next year, and we would like to see 75 choir members singing at our commemorative concerts. Why not come and join us? Tenors, Baritones and Basses all welcome!

SINGING CAN SERIOUSLY IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH, HAPPINESS AND WELL-BEING! We meet every Wednesday 7:30pm - 9:30pm at The Temple Methodist Church, Upper High St, Taunton TA1 3PY.

Make your own Mulled Wine

• 1 large piece orange rind (avoid the pith) • 1 large piece lemon rind (avoid the pith) • 2-4 tablespoons demerara sugar

An easy mulled wine recipe for the festive season, brimming with Christmassy spice. Don’t bother with expensive wine - a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference!

Method : Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don’t bring to the boil.

Eat, Drink and be merry!

Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you’d like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your mouth as this will be hot!).

Preparation time: less than 30 mins Cooking time: less than 10 mins Serves: 4- 6 adults Ingredients • • • •

Deck the halls with Christmas pretzels With Jo Middleton On a scale of one to Rudolph, how much do you love Christmas? If it’s ‘a warm mince pie and a glass of mulled wine’ then excellent, you can stay. If you’re thinking more along the lines of ‘cold, overcooked sprout’ then this column is not for you. I bloody love Christmas - the lights, the smells, the Christmas tat. Take a perfectly ordinary everyday item, stick a few snowflakes on it and add the word ‘seasonal’ and I’m there. Last week I bought a bag of ‘cinnamon bun pretzels’ in Sainsbury’s (the crunchy kind, not the bakery kind), just because they’d put a little snowy scene on the packaging. When I got home and thought about it, I don’t think either pretzels or cinnamon buns are even Christmassy foods, but still. ‘Ooooh!’, I thought to myself when I spotted them on the shelf, ‘Christmas pretzels!’ I also love the gifts. If you’ve ever done one of those ‘how you show love’ personality tests - I’m definitely the person who uses gifts. ‘Look! See how much I love you? I bought you a THING!’ I’m not sure it’s the healthiest of love showing styles, but that’s a column for another day. It does lend itself well to Christmas though, and by the summer holidays I normally have a few presents stuffed behind the suitcases and overnight bags on the top shelves of my wardrobes already. Increasingly though I feel uncomfortable with the sheer amount of things at Christmas, especially in terms of waste, and so this year I’m channeling my love of all things festive by MAKING THINGS.

million pounds to buy all the cinnamon sticks and mixed peel and is never as nice as the one from Lidl. It was fun though, and I do now have 95% of a bottle of Cointreau, which is never a bad thing. Then I had a bash at Christmas pudding flavoured vodka, which involves soaking what is basically a pile of Christmas cake ingredients in cheap vodka before decanting into rustic looking bottles. TOP TIP: make your vodka BEFORE your Christmas cake and kill two birds with one stone. I learned this lesson the hard way - picture me pouring the vodka over the dried fruit and spices, glancing at the wrapped cake, realisation dawning. And finally I’m making mulled wine plum jam, which could be interesting as I’ve never made jam before. I’m trying not to think about the ‘cost per jar’ on this one as I stare across the laptop at the mountain of plums and the red wine, vanilla pods and jam thermometer bought especially. And don’t even talk to me about jars. I keep reminding myself that it’s the thought that counts and all that but honestly, I’ve spent a fortune. Next year I might just get everyone the Christmas pretzels. Jo is the owner of the long-running and hilariously funny parenting blog, Slummy Single Mummy, She also co-hosts at Word Gets Around Networking in Taunton. Jo now boasts a new string to her bow as her debut novel, Playgroups and Prosecco, hit the bookshop shelves back in May. Follow her adventures online...

I know, I’m so Kirstie Alsopp aren’t I? I started with a Christmas cake, which is one of the most ridiculous things ever as it costs you about a 10.

The Diaries Of

Ginger

George West Somerset’s Top Cat - the word on the street. Hello! My name is Ginger George and I reside in Williton with my ‘providers’ as I call them. They are the Frasier family... David Frasier, his wife Suzy and two girls, Harriet and Molly, who spend most of their time screaming. Why do little girls scream all the time ? They tend to all my needs, bed, food, somewhere to scratch (back of the settee normally) and my own little door so I can pop in and out whenever I please. I’m the top cat around this neighbourhood, it’s my job to designate different areas for the rest of the feline population . Not an easy job by any means, disputes over access, doing business in someone else’s area, marking territory that isn’t yours, the list is endless. Fights, squabbles, then just when you think you have it all sorted someone else moves in to the area with a couple of new moggies and the whole thing kicks off again! Lucky for us there is the park, open to all. It’s like Noman’s-land up there! but you run the risk of kids and footballs, but it’s a super place for mice. Still, what’s the time, 1.30 pm. Time for a snooze I think, and wake up at 3pm. That Mrs Wilkins at No 14 will be back from the shops. I’ll jump up on her windowsill and she lets me in.

She buys me those special catty treats I like. She’s a pushover. A couple nudges, start purring and she’s putty in my paws. Nice lady though, I do like Mrs Wilkins. She’s on her own see, so I guess I’m the only company she has. It’s a case of ‘you scratch my back’, and I’ll scr... maybe not then. Bit of a tough job on tonight, I have to sort out Blackie from No37, black tomcat high as a kite most of the time, cat nipped right up. Spends most of the day rolling around from all accounts. I mean a bit here and there won’t hurt anybody, but someone down that way is a big supplier. Next door has a Jack Russell. He’s called Simon, who calls a dog Simon? Simple Simon I call him. Dogs are so slow and all that barking, it’s all front you know. A paw full of claws on their kisser, and they run off whimpering. One of my favourite pastimes with Simple is sitting on the fence, drives him nuts, yap yap yap yap, jumping up and down, I just watch and wind him right up. Now where shall I have my nap? The settee looks good. The sun might make an appearance and I will be right in line. The kids will be back at 4.00 pm so a good move all round, so I have time to dream about my nibbles!

Send us a picture of you with your beloved moggy and we’ll share our favourites on our facebook page. Maybe you have a Ginger George lookalike! Our favourite will WIN get some yummy cat treats. Send them here: www.facebook.com/thewordgetsaround along with your name and the name of your furry friend. You must LIKE our Facebook page to win. Entries end 20th December. Winner announced Christmas Eve. You must be in the picture with your cat. Only one picture per entry. Good luck!

Styles Ice Cream creates UK’s first solar-powered ice cream van. For generations, the Baker family have farmed the land at Styles Farm, on the edge of the beautiful heather moorland, among lush green valleys. In 1988, as committed food lovers, they decided to diversify into one of their favourite foods, luxury ice cream. Without losing the traditional ways of farming on the Exmoor Hills, David and Sue worked hard to perfect their favourite flavours using only the best natural ingredients and creating the most flavoursome ice creams that we have come to know and love as Styles Luxury Farmhouse Ice Cream. Today mankind’s focus on all things ‘green’ is at all alltime high. We’re much more conscious on the impact we have on our environment. There are two things that us British are good at Invention & innovation. This is very true for David who took on the challenge to bring Ice Cream selling into the 21st century! We caught up with David at the Somerset County Show in September. He told us all about his exciting project. “We listened to our customers, show directors and event organisers. They did not want to inhale the fumes from the diesel engine vans whilst they were stationary selling ice cream.”

16.

99’ problems but my pitch ain’t one. “I was told by some that solar powered vans couldn’t be done. I was met with apathy and disinterest from the industry. This only spurred me on further. I decided to invent our own! I am delighted to say that the first ever solar ice cream vans are here. Vans can now be adapted to include solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on its roof and batteries to power the freezers and softy machine. You can now sell all types of ice cream without the engine running!” David took delight in telling us that providing the sun is shining on a clear day, the van can run on 100 per cent solar power. The solar PV panels provide power to freezers, fridges, internal lighting and can store additional energy in batteries on-board. The van itself is diesel powered, but when David reaches his vending location, the engine is turned off and the van operates solely on solar power. “The new vans also save me £15-£18 per day in fuel plus the cost of plugging into an electricity socket on the show-ground. That that can be as much as another £150.” David is currently planning a £1 million investment to replace his entire fleet of 11 vans with clean energy versions and is already reaping the rewards.

Remember to mention ‘Word Gets Around’ when you contact one of our advertisers.

Why should everyone use Solar powered and Battery assisted Ice Cream Vans? Sustainable The advantage of solar energy over fossil fuels is well established and the technology to harness this unlimited free energy has progressed, making its use in a variety of sectors possible.

ENVIRONMENTAL No diesel engine running when van is in operation, meaning 100% pollution and carbon free.

Low Environmental Impact It is clear that solar energy reduces our dependence on non-renewable energy sources. This is an important step in fighting the climate crisis. Solar energy has a substantially reduced impact on the environment compared to fossil fuels. This is not just on a global scale but also to the immediate environment in reducing gases and toxic fumes from diesel engines.

ECONOMICAL Reduced diesel consumption, no electricity charges at events and no need to plug in overnight.

Energy Independence/Security No longer pay for electricity connections or have the hassle and noise of a generator or engine.

Low Maintenance The majority of today’s solar power systems do not require a lot of maintenance. Residential solar panels usually only require cleaning a couple of times a year. Solar panel manufacturers do 20- or 25-year warranties with their solar panels. All Ice Cream equipment is modular – easy to repair and replace.

ADAPTABLE Diesel or electric vehicles. Customizable to suit your needs. All ice cream parts can be taken out and fixed.

Batteries All the free energy harnessed from the Sun will be stored in our high capacity batteries, which can store about 2 days of use of the Ice Cream Van.

The Last Word-Book Review With John Fish

The Little Library Year: Recipes and reading to suit each season. By Kate Young Published by Head of Zeus (Released: 3rd October 2019) 336 Pages. HB £25.

Now that the days are getting shorter and minds start turning to looking for that special Christmas gift, I have it here for that one person who loves recipes and literary classics. The Little Library Year by food writer Kate Young is beautifully illustrated and packed full of mouthwatering recipes to cover the full year. But that is not all, just look at the title of the book and you will see there is more to this as this is just not a book about food but also Kate shares her love of books and throughout you will discover some outstanding reading lists. The Little Library Year is broken down over six parts from those cold winter months to the first signs of spring through to the long warm summer days and then through autumn’s golden days as the leaves turn and fall. Through each part Kate shares her months with you and also some of her favourite recipes to go with the season. Kate’s love of literature shines through her writing as this is no ordinary book about food it is a love of the seasons and with each season comes a chance cook with some delicious recipes to try and also deserts to enjoy. Throughout there are reading recommendations to curl up with during the winter or to read on the beach. A book combining two of my favourite things. Recipes and great books to read.

The Testaments By Margaret Atwood Published by Chatto & Windus (Released: 10th September 2019) 432 Pages. HB £20.

It was 1985 when Margaret Atwood released The Handmaid’s Tale which then was turned into a Channel 4 award winning TV series in 2017. Now just a matter of 34 years later the sequel we have all be waiting for has arrived. The Testaments was the most anticipated book launch of the year and immediately went straight to the top of the bestsellers chart. “Only dead people are allowed to have statues, but I have been given one while still alive. Already I am petrified.” These are the opening words of The Testaments. The story picks up some 15 years later and it is Offred has disappeared but to what fate? The Testaments is narrated by three voices Agnes and Daisy are the younger voices and overall there is Aunt Lydia and she really is terrifying. It is Lydia that rules the roost through the book but I found the two young women have a voice but the spectre of Lydia is always there she is dark and sinister. In Gilead it is the Aunts who are in charge of all the other women and if you have read The Handmaid’s Tale you will know that it is the Handmaids who are the only ones who are allowed to be educated and you will not be shocked at the lengths those who are in control in Gilead will go to keep control. There are the stories of the shocking treatment to break those and readily accept a life of slavery. The Testaments is a real gripping read and a perfectly formed sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale.

My love of books allows me to attend book launches across the country and also book prize events. I read on average 180 books a year nearly all before they are released into bookshops. Last year I launched a fund raising campaign called The Lost Words for Somerset Primary Schools. The aim was to raise enough money to enable me to get a copy of The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris into every Primary School in Somerset. The target was achieved and this project is still going strong today. With each issue of Word Gets Around I will select two books that I hope you the reader will enjoy in both fiction and non-fiction titles”.

Reasons to Shop Local Love a log burner

You boost the local economy For every £1 spent with a small or mediumsized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business. You increase the value of your home High streets populated with thriving independent businesses boost the prices of nearby homes. Discount stores and charity shops decrease home values in the area. It is more ethical When you shop at local butchers, bakers, farm shops and green grocers, it is likely that a decent percentage of the produce has had a short fieldto-fork journey. As a bonus it means the food is likely to contain more nutrients and have less packaging You support local entrepreneurs Head for your local artisan market. These help foster the talents of the next generation of British designers and retailers. There is a constant turnover of new products, and sellers listen to customers’ demands. From food to fledgling clothing designers there will be something for everyone. You help to build your local community Bookshops, cafés and craft shops often drum up custom by hosting events, from reading groups to knitting clubs and children’s events. If local businesses are not supported, these fun local groups tend to disappear too. You might get a better deal or some good advice Local independent businesses can use their discretion to reward regular custom. Butchers will give advice on cooking times, and how large a joint you might need to feed a family get-together, with some leftovers. Get to know your local traders. By Tom Hancock

Out of all the purchases I have ever made for my house, the log burner has to be the best. I was a bit hesitant at first, I thought there were advantages our gas fire had that the log burner didn’t. My main concern was convenience. Those nights when you have been out in the cold and you come in and want instant heat. Then the thought of cleaning out the ash every day will be a chore. Well the truth the log burner is just as versatile. We load the burner with logs and put a couple bits of fire lighters underneath, light them, shut the door, open the vents and you will have a roaring fire in less than two minutes. No bits of paper, no kindling and no smoky room. If you burn sustainable logs only, the amount of ash you will get after burning several logs in an evening will fit in a teacup, so really it only needs cleaning once a week at best and logs like to burn on a bed of ash. There is a down side of course, you have to store the logs somewhere and also stacking them, plus you have to bring in enough to use that day. Apart from that, the joy of a real heat (and boy they kick out some heat) and just the look of real flames out way any hardship. There is something primeval about a real fire and you could always cut your own logs up. There is the initial cost of course, they range from £400 - £2000. We laid out £800 for ours which come to about £1500 by the time it was installed, but did included a large chunk of slate for it to sit on. So running costs? Well you can read various savings on the internet but to give you some idea we buy a load and a half of logs which costs £180 which lasted me through the last winter lighting it most evenings and weekends. On top of that we bought about £100.00 of coal nuts. This helps it to burn slower. The burner we have is 5Kw which is more than ample for most standard sized rooms, we leave the lounge door open so the heat hits the central heating thermostat in the hallway so turns if off most of the time but the excess heat travels upstairs too. The fire can be easily controlled via air vents, so you can adjust the amount of heat required from glowing nicely to raging inferno. If you burn sustainable logs it is carbon neutral as for every tree cut down a new one is planted in its place. They come in various forms, log only burner or dual fuel (logs or coal), from traditional too ultra- modern. You can have a burner only or have radiators attached and don’t worry if you haven’t got a chimney as your installer will make you one, you will be amazed at what they can do, so check with your local supplier. If the bailiffs call it’ll be the last thing they get their hands on, love my log burner. By Clive Smith, Editor.

Christmas Day Lunch Menu

12 Noon to 4pm. £49.95pp Gemini Man 4/10

Started well. It started ok, then went downhill sadly. A kind of Face Off update that didn’t work. Not believable - a lot of wasted money but an effective marketing campaign that’s sure to get bums on seats.

Official Secrets 10/10

I have to admit I didn’t know the full story and I’m glad I didn’t. Superbly written, acted, great cast, full of suspense and emotion. Great story telling about a true event, lies deceit, love and loss - they’re all there.

Joker 7/10

There are two sides to the Joker. One side you have sympathy for and the other side is a deranged psychotic killer. This film takes you on a journey and delves into the creation of a monster and his troubled upbringing. You feel sympathy for his mental state until the monster is unleashed. As a stand-alone movie it works well and takes away nothing from Heath Ledger’s superb performance Phoenix’s performance is superb and has rightly come in for huge accolades.

Judy 9/10

Sensitive portrayal, almost perfect. When you’re young everyone seems old. When you realise how young she died you realise how much she accomplished in such a short life span. Your heart isn’t measured by how much you love but by how much people love you. Mental Illness is so much better understood now. Her demons were with her everyday, but she battled hard to keep them at bay. Great script, great cast, simple location this will transfer to the stage perfectly superb performance by Renée Zellweger.

The Goldfinch 9/10

This is a rare film - an intellectual film that’ll draw you in and you’ll want to see again. You feel like a detective piecing all the parts together to establish what actually happened. The acting was superb not least from the younger version of his multilingual Ukrainian mysterious friend. The story is told for the most part in retrospective and it’s a story of love and loss throughout but it’s the mystery that keeps you going.

The First World War: ‘Christmas Truce’ of 1914. Driven by feelings of goodwill, home-sickness and combatweariness some men crossed the lines with their hands up, and troops from the opposing side went to meet them. Commanders either turned a blind-eye or joined in. Food and supplies were exchanged and tools and equipment were borrowed. Games of football were played and bodies trapped within No Man’s Land were buried. In many areas the truce lasted for the whole of Christmas day but in some places the peace lasted much longer and it was several weeks before the bloody conflict resumed. One of the most remarkable events of the First World War concerns the ‘Christmas Truce’ of 1914, in which the soldiers of the Western Front laid down their arms on Christmas Day and met in No Man’s Land, exchanging food and cigarettes, as well as playing football.

By Louise Addison

We can solve your financial needs.

The cessation of violence was entirely unofficial. There had been no prior discussion and troops acted spontaneously from goodwill, not orders.

We are a family run business based in Taunton. Dealing with all of your mortgage, protection, Will and Trust needs.

The most famous account of events involves British and German forces; however, French and Belgium troops also took part. No-one really knows what initiated it. There were some reports that British troops heard their German counterparts singing Christmas carols and joined but there were also reports of German and British soldiers erecting signs wishing each other a ‘Merry Christmas’.
