Journey to Calvary: Praying through the Stations of the Cross

ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES, USA

Dear Military brothers and sisters in Christ, One of the most popular and treasured traditions of the Catholic Church is the Stations or Way of the Cross. This is only natural: as followers of Jesus we wish to recreate the experience of our Savior as he carried his cross to his death. Today, this devotion is most often followed during Lent and Holy Week. But since Jesus’ death and resurrection are the central mysteries of our faith, we can pray the stations any time of the year. As you begin this journey with Christ, my friends, let me make an important point: the longest journey you’ll ever take is from your head to your heart. Truly journeying with Christ through these Stations means letting the theoretical knowledge that God loves me travel from my head to my heart. Then I start living in response to this love. Let me tell you something: There’s nothing you can do that will ever make God stop loving you. Nothing! He is all loving. He’s that way with me, with you, with the buddy serving next to you. He’s that way with everyone you will ever meet today and in all your tomorrows. The following passages are intended to help you grasp the reality of your Father’s love as evidenced through the passion of his Son. In addition, each of the fourteen stations also tries to help you come to know Jesus himself more deeply. After visualizing Jesus’ passion and coming face to face with the Lord, these stations provide an opportunity for repentance and healing in a specific area. Each station ends with intercessory prayer. Jesus’ resurrected life is celebrated in a litany of praise at the conclusion of the fourteenth station! Don’t feel obligated to pray through all the stations at one sitting, as the Lord may have something specific to say to you at one particular station. The many relevant biblical references provided in each station may inspire you to look up these passages on your own. In praying through these stations, Scripture can come alive for you. Every Scripture verse can affirm the reality that God loves you unconditionally and that through the death and resurrection of his Son Jesus, you can enter into a deeper personal relationship with him. Finally, I am very grateful to The Word Among Us and Partners in Evangelism for making these Stations available to Catholics in the military. As you pray the Stations, may the Lord bless you abundantly! Bishop Joseph Estabrook Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA Vicar for Evangelization and Vocations
