The Trial Six defendants were tried together: my father, his client, the client’s daughter, their CPA, and two prominent state senators. I consider it miraculous that I wasn’t indicted, given the amount of time I had spent working exclusively on this client’s leases and contracts. I told my dad that I felt as if God had lifted me out of mortal danger at the very last second, bringing me to safety as I followed his lead. My dad said that, while he was grateful I was spared, it seemed the exact opposite had happened to him. Our family was confident that things would all work out once the facts were revealed at trial. In the meantime, my father voluntarily resigned as a deacon so as not to cause scandal. He tried to stay focused on the work that he still had to do at the office. Hundreds of friends and parishioners sent supportive letters and assurance of their prayers. I threw myself into graduate school as if my life depended on it, and I found great fulfillment there. It was as though I had been “writing with the wrong hand” for my six years in law, and now I was finally getting to write with ease using my dominant hand. I loved the coursework, my teachers, and
