2022 MEMBERSHIP

A MESSAGE FROM JOE LEACH Everyone is looking forward with great optimism to the 2022 season, and it will be a warm welcome to our overseas signing, Australia batsman Matthew Wade.

It is a throwback signing in the sense that it is unusual these days to acquire the services of a leading overseas player for virtually an entire summer.

That was commonplace in years gone by, and I am aware that players like Glenn Turner and Vanburn Holder have become legends at this club for their sterling service over many years.

Typically overseas players these days move in and out during the summer because of their different commitments. You are just getting to know them, and they move on.

But Matthew is fully committed to Worcestershire, wants to play an entire season of county cricket, and is bringing his family across from Australia next summer.

He will be a significant asset with his experience and quality. We also look forward to our other newcomers in Ed Pollock, Taylor Cornall and Ben Gibbon, striving to make an impact at New Road.

It will be back to being one of the ‘foot soldiers’ for me after deciding to relinquish the role of Club Captain after five years.

I have committed myself to Worcestershire for another three years and believe there is still plenty of good cricket left in me yet.

It goes without saying that giving up the captaincy was a difficult decision to make, but one I felt was right for myself and the group as well.

I’m immensely proud of what I’ve achieved in some difficult times for the club, but now I feel the time is right to focus on my cricket and doing the best I can with bat and ball and looking forward to supporting my successor.

Last summer was challenging, and we did not achieve the results we wanted. We played plenty of good cricket at times but often without obtaining the consistency needed throughout a game and a tournament.

But the emergence of Josh Baker was a massive plus point along with the form of the likes of Jake Libby, Brett D’Oliveira and Dillon Pennington, while I was happy with the way I bowled to end the season after a couple of minor adjustments.

Thank you for all your support during some challenging times for everyone during the past two years because of COVID-19, and we look forward to re-engaging with everyone again in 2022.

Those friendly faces and words of encouragement that greet us at the bottom of the pavilion steps each day have been much missed.
