Worcester Country Club once again voted as the #1 Private Golf Course - “BOB Awards”. For the past five years now, Worcester Business Journal has asked its readers for the best companies to do business with. And each year, since 2014, the end result is this WBJ Best of Business list. Compared to other Best of… lists where editorial staffs carefully vet winners using their own expertise and opinions – notably, Boston Magazine's Best of Boston ascribes to this strict standard – the WBJ Best of Business is a popularity contest. It is our equivalent to walking in a room full of your business leader peers and asking, "Hey, do you know of a good office cleaning company?" or "Where do you take clients out for a drink?" or "Who's your accountant?" or "Where can I get a solid website designed?" We ask as many WBJ readers who are willing to take our online survey at the end of the year, double-check the results for any chicanery (multiple votes all from the same internet address all at the same time are particular red flags) and declare the top vote-getters as the WBJ Best of Business for 2018. Information from WBJ article by Brad Kane.

2018 Worcester Country Club Golf Programs 9 and Dine – One Friday per month in June, July and August, come out to the golf course anytime after 4PM for an informal round of golf with your fellow Members. This is a casual setting of golf designed to allow for 9 holes of golf after the work week has ended. Golf will be followed by food, cocktails and camaraderie. Walk 8 and Feel Great – Come on out on April 12th and May 17th at 4PM for an informal golf clinic on the range. Clinic is free of charge. The clinic will be followed by walking 8 holes with professional staff. (Walking is optional but encouraged for health) No need to go to the gym following this round of golf. Bring Your Spouse to the Golf Course- Sunday May 21st. If you have a spouse, or significant other who would like to play more golf, we encourage you to bring them to the club on this day. We start on the range at 11AM for a clinic covering the short game. No charge for the clinic. Then we will pair off and play a few holes with the professional staff. This a great way to introduce a new or lapsed golfer back to the game. The professional staff will also be available to answer questions regarding etiquette and on course rules. Equipment will be provided if needed. PGA Junior Golf League – We will once again be fielding a team for PGAJGL. This is for boys and girls ages 9-13. There will be weekly after school practice sessions and matches on Saturday afternoons in May and June. This is a team event with low pressure. Emphasis is on having fun and getting our junior members interested in the game of golf. We will be in a league with The Haven and Oak Hill Country Club. Information regarding registration will be made available soon. Pee Wee Clinics – Saturday May 6th, 13th and 20th. 1PM for juniors ages 2-12. This is a fun and relaxed clinic for our youngest future tour players. We will cover fundamentals of the game with the emphasis once again being on fun. Clubs will be provided for those who do not have any. Ladies Clinics - There will be weekly clinics in the Spring covering all aspects of the game. These are very low key and designed to encourage players of all abilities. Bringing a friend is encouraged. Dates and times to be determined soon.

I

t all started in the spring of 2009. Armed with a copy of the latest Wine Spectator, found-

er Kevin Mehra set out on a mission to bring higher quality wine to the market for a bet-

ter price. He started calling wineries with a history of high ratings to ask if they had extra wine for sale. Some told him to get lost, but in the end, he found a handful of wineries that liked his concept. The plan was simple: we put their wine in our bottle, and sell it for less. But why would wineries want to do that? Rather than discount their wine and erode the value of their brand, they found that wineries were willing to part with a certain percentage of their production for a reduced price. It was a

win/win scenario. Wineries got to sell more wine, and consumers got access to better wine at lower prices. Upon release, each 90+ Cellars wine is assigned a lot number. Each lot is identified as a particular wine from a winery. Instead of telling a story about the prestigious winemaker and precious soil, the labels offer only vague descriptions. For example, Lot 31, a 2009 Pinot Noir from California, is touted as coming from “the cool and breezy hills of Caneros, a place where pinot grapes develop to near perfection… from a producer with three decades of Pinot

Noir wine growing experience.” When 90+ Cellars considers a new vintage, it conducts at least two tastings before committing. Then the company gets six samples to use as standards to later test the shipment to ensure they are the same. It’s a take on the traditional negocient - the French term for wine merchants who collect the grapes of smaller winemakers and growers, blend them into wines, and sell them under their own umbrella. They are the modern day negocient - working with wineries and vineyards to curate a portfolio of fine wines from all over the globe.

Our Weekly Industry News Number of beginner golfers reached record high in 2016, according to study

According to the report, golf participation among young girls is up. GETTY IMAGES

By GOLF WIRE Tuesday, April 25, 2017

With the death of Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods's absence from competition, and a series of embarrassing rules controversies at the sport's highest levels, the last year hasn't been completely smooth sailing for the golf industry. But last week, a spot of bright news emerged in the National Golf Foundation's annual report on participation. The report showed that the number of beginner golfers in 2016 reached a record high of 2.5 million (this is defined as people who played on a golf course for the first time). There were other positive signs, too. Thanks to innovative ways to participate in the game that may not include a traditional golf course, like Topgolf, overall participation in the game is up. Off course participation increased 11%. This is the first year that the NGF has included off-course participation in its reporting; it made the change to better reflect the realities of the sport on the ground. “NGF has been planning the reporting of off-course participation for some time," said NGF President and CEO Joe Beditz. "There are a couple of good reasons for doing so: first, to make our golf participation numbers better reflect overall golf activity and play; and, second, to make our measure more comparable to other sports." There was good news for fans of the LPGA and diversity in golf, as well. The report found that 33% of junior golfers (age 6-17) are girls, a dramatic increase from the 17% they made up in 1995. Young golfers today are also more diverse than in the past. Twenty-seven percent of junior golfers are non-white, up from 6% in 1995.
