Greetings!

Fall is an ideal time to take an art class to discover your creativity and talent.

We here at the Worcester Art Museum invite you to page through our more ecofriendly catalog. As you will see, we have continued to modify not only the look of our catalog but also our offerings based on your feedback. You will see your favorites but also the addition of new faculty members, classes and workshops. Our longer fall courses permit you more time to explore new art techniques or enrich your skills. In addition to daytime and evening classes, this December we are offering lots of innovative one and two-day workshops. Our dedicated faculty provide beginners with encouragement, direction, and individual attention. Experienced students can refresh their skills and thrive on the camaraderie of students and faculty.

We encourage you to complete a short evaluation at the end of the session via email.

Sharing your feedback on experiences in the galleries and studio will help us make improvements to future classes and programs. We really appreciate your input!

You are invited to turn off your cell phone, leave the stress of daily life at the door, and be creative. The Worcester Art Museum’s Studio Class Programs continues our great tradition of combining studio and Museum. ADULT CLASSES Why WAM? Home to one of the oldest and most respected studio art programs in the region, the Worcester Art Museum offers a wide range of art and art history classes and workshops taught by the area’s leading instructors. Unlike other programs, WAM students have access to the Museum’s world-renowned collections that inspire and inform their work in the classroom. Studio art classes and workshops are available for day, evening, and weekend sessions and for all ages, abilities, and interests.

What You Should Know

About Taking Adult Studio Classes at WAM Skill Levels Novice – For those with no previous experience with medium Beginner – For those who have some experience with medium Intermediate – Requires completion of at least two classes in medium Advanced – Requires completion of at least three classes All Levels – Open to all levels from beginners to continuing students Except when noted, materials are not included in the tuition. All-day workshops include a lunch break. Bring your own lunch, or visit the Museum Café or Sip Cart.

College and Teacher Credit Teachers and educators may take any of our classes for Professional Development Points. Many courses can be taken for college credit at Quinsigamond Community College. Classes offered for credit are indicated by CredQCC= Quinsigamond Community College. Credit is awarded through QCC’s Experience-Based Education Program. Award of credit is through QCC following the completion of the course.

Students pay WAM tuition plus a WAM credit processing fee of $40 prior to first class. Upon completion of the course, the student pays current credentialing fee to QCC. For more information, call QCC at 508-854-4439.

Scholarships Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for students on limited or fixed incomes. Please call 508-793-4339 for more information.

Love, Death and the Promise of Eternity in Medieval Art and Society – New @ WAM! Using a broad-edge pen and ink, create graceful and elegant letters in Italic, a style of handwriting used in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Beginners receive an overview of lowercase and simplified uppercase letters while continuing students explore more in depth topics and engage in independent study. Gallery visits inspire students and reinforce lessons. No prerequisite.

Using a variety of mediums, we’ll expand on basic 2D concepts, including composition, line, value, proportion, form, space, and texture as students draw from objects and a model. Model fee included. Comic Books for Adults Jamie Buckmaster Level: Beginner/Intermediate Tues 6-9pm, Sept 12 – Nov 14, 10 weeks Non-Member $300 Member $270 Learn about story-telling, character development, and comic book structure and language.

Students can use any drawing style: cartoon, manga, or even your own style. One or two comic books will be created by the end of the class. The latter part of the class will address specific areas for improvement for each student as well as adding color. Prerequisite: at least one drawing course. From graphite pencil and stick, to colored pencil, we’ll draw from observation, imagination, conception, and color composition. Make art from your imagination, observation, and from a life model. The class will offer an intro to pastels and time to experiment before transitioning into painting. Figure Drawing and Painting Elaine Smollin Level: All Levels Tues 1-4pm, Sept 12 – Nov 14, 10 weeks Non-Member $350 Member $320 Individual support will enrich everyone’s personal abilities in any medium. This weekly class will allow a variety of artists to share their experiences in an informal manner and through appreciation of individual talents and aims. Short poses by the life model are followed by two one-hour poses. Includes model fee.

Collage Acrylics and Drawing Media Randy LeSage Level: Intermediate/Advanced Thurs 9:30am-12:30pm, Sept 21 – Nov 30 10 weeks (no Nov 23) Non-Member $300 Member $270 Work quickly or deliberately by applying acrylic transparent glazes or opaque paint in unison with cutting or tearing collage papers. Include various drawing materials to create vivid textures, colors and personal expression on paper, board or canvas. Painting Methods Jill Pottle Level: Beginner/Intermediate Mon 1-4pm, Oct 23 – Nov 20, 5 weeks Non-Member $150 Member $135 Jump start your creative process and explore a variety of painting methods. Learn palette set-up, color mixing and paint application techniques. Discuss painting composition, values and textures. This course is for the beginner and intermediate painter who wants to learn or acquire more painting skills and a conceptual understanding of contemporary approaches to painting. Art Studio Sampler TBD Level: Novice/Beginner Sun 9:30am-12:30pm, Oct 22 – Nov 19 5 weeks Non-Member $150 Member $135 Learn to draw in pencil, charcoal, pastels, pen and ink. You’ll also get a chance to try your hand at watercolor and acrylics. Gallery visits will help explain terminology and provide an understanding of how artists use these mediums.

Returning students and those with some experience will continue to explore the fundamentals of artmaking. No prerequisites. All abilities welcome. Supplies for first class: drawing pad (14”x17”or larger), erasers, 2B and 6B pencils.

Painting I and II Sue Dion Level: Beginner/Intermediate Tues 9:30am-1:30pm, Sept 12 – Nov 14 10 weeks Non-Member $400 Member $360 Strengthen your basic techniques through painting projects that focus on still life, landscape, the figure and abstraction. Explore mediums such as acrylics, water-based oils, and pigment sticks. The class will cover natural light, perspective, structure of forms, and design and pattern to encourage individuality and creativity.

Speed Painting on Location Jill Pottle Level: Intermediate/Advanced Mon 1-4pm, Sept 11 – Oct 2, 4 weeks Non-Member $120 Member $108 Paint at a new location each day, and learn how to simplify forms, develop overlapping areas for depth, and create relationships between sky and land. Work on two landscapes each day and learn how to set up paint quickly and capture the scenery with big shapes and ideas.

It’s exciting to paint fast, while trying to capture a moment in time in an urban setting. Demos, group critiques and discussion of historical references throughout. Prerequisite: at least one previous art course preferred. See website for materials.

Acrylic Painting Rebecca Duffy Level: Beginner/Intermediate Tues 6-9pm, Sept 12 – Nov 14, 10 weeks Non-Member $300 Member $270 Explore painting techniques, composition, color, and creative expression in an upbeat and encouraging atmosphere. Learn brushwork, layering, and color mixing techniques. In-class assignments will include: composition, color theory, light and shadow, brush techniques, palette knife techniques and experimenting with other tools to apply paint. Abstract Painting I and II – New @ WAM! Patti Kelly Level: Beginner/Intermediate Wed 6-9pm, Sept 13 – Nov 15, 10 weeks Non-Member $300 Member $270 Explore how to use color, texture and gesture to create expressive abstract paintings or mixed media compositions. Learn how to use acrylic gels, translucent glazes and molding paste.

Start with the basic materials, add the right tools and techniques, and let painting become your lifelong passion! The life model is the focus for making compositions with lively subject matter and vibrant color. We will focus on the color harmony, color contrast, and how to create form, volume, and space. Color and design will be stressed through traditional and experimental approaches. Prerequisite: at least three painting courses. Painting in a Series Nan Hass Feldman Level: Intermediate/Advanced Mon 9:30am-1:30pm, Sept 25 – Dec 4 10 weeks (no Oct 9) Non-Member $400 Member $360 One characteristic that separates professional artists from art hobbyists is their eagerness to create several works of art around a single theme or idea. Your series of paintings should have a cohesive theme (subject) and style based on photos, sketches, and compositional ideas. The goal of this class is to create a body of work of at least seven complete paintings.

Prerequisite: at least three painting classes.

Asian Brush Painting Sharon Smith Viles Level: All Levels Tues 1-4pm, Sept 12 – Oct 31, 8 weeks Non-Member $240 Member $216 This eight-week course is suitable for beginners as well as advanced students. Study the art of four Asian master artists and create our own art based on what we learn. Beginners will study basic strokes and the advanced group will explore new themes. Asian Brush Painting Bayda Asbridge Level: All Levels Wed 6-9pm, Sept 13 – Nov 15, 10 weeks Non-Member $300 Member $270 Explore and experiment with a variety of subjects, techniques, and materials while enjoying the vitality of this spontaneous style of painting. Students will enjoy exploring some relaxation exercises to regenerate energy and mental concentration. This course will cover subjects including: Asian portraiture and figure drawing, modern Asian art and collage, depicting monkeys and other primates.

Photography Street Photography and Motion Richard Hoyer Level: Beginner/Intermediate Mon 9:30am-12:30pm, Sept 11 – Nov 20 10 weeks (no Oct 9) Non-Member $300 Member $270 Explore the wonders of street photography during this creative, hands-on workshop. This workshop will introduce you to snapping people, traffic and buildings in natural light and in low-light conditions. Prerequisite: at least one photography class. Includes lab fee. Focus on resolution, controlling contrast and color, combining photos, file size and sharpening.

(CreditQCC) Photographing People Naturally Norm Eggert Level: All Levels Thurs 6-9pm, Sept 14 – Nov 16, 10 weeks Non-Member $300 Member $270 Learn how to make studio-quality portraits, using formal settings with studio lights, backgrounds and informal settings with available lighting or flash. Learn to take great outdoor portraits with just your flash and/or a reflector as well as casual candid photographs. Suitable for any camera. No prerequisite. All abilities welcome. Includes lab fee. Intro to Woodcut and Relief Printmaking New @ WAM! Corinne Rhodes Level: All Levels Tues 6-9pm, Sept 12 – Oct 17, 6 weeks Non-Member $200 Member $180 Using a variety of printmaking blocks, from softcut plastic to wood and non-toxic, water-based inks, we will examine different approaches to line-work and mark making from graphic and angular to painterly and gestural. Students/artists will be introduced to image preparation and transfer methods, sharpening and care of tools, carving methods, ink and paper preparation, rolling techniques, printing on an etching press and by hand. Students/artists can also bring their own T-shirts, bags or other cloth items and discover the fun of relief printmaking on fabric.

Novella in Flash Level: Intermediate/Advanced Laurel King Wed 6-9pm, Sept 20 – Nov 8, 8 weeks Non-Member $240 Member $216 Do you like writing short fiction but also have the desire to produce a longer project? The novella-in-flash offers a chance to create a full-length work while still embracing the concision and energy of the flash form (less than 1,000 words). We’ll read flash fiction and novellas-in-flash, critique student stories, explore how to connect flash fictions to create a novella, and discuss possibilities for publishing both forms. Writers who prefer to produce “stand-alone” flash stories are also welcome.

by Blanche Lazell and others around 1915 in Provincetown, MA. Inspired by Japanese woodblock printing, and American crafts techniques, this simple, painterly woodblock method is a way to make a multi-colored print from one block. Learn how to use watercolor, and print with a baren or spoon. This is a technique that does not require any special equipment. In this workshop, you will learn the basics, starting with carving linear drawings into pine boards and finishing by printing with watercolors. No prerequisite. All levels of ability are welcome.

YOUTH CLASSES What Makes our Program Unique?

WAM has a long history of introducing children of all ages to the world of art.

Our students explore the Museum, try new materials, and benefit from working with professional artists and educators. As they build on their skills, they gain a sense of confidence and a deeper appreciation for art. All youth, not just those with perceived talent, benefit from our Program. Our instructors consider each child’s unique capabilities and give individualized attention during lessons. All materials are provided for youth classes.

Youth and Teen Levels 14 – 36 Months with Adult Share the benefits of creative play with your toddler.

These workshops help toddlers explore, discover, and grow through new sensory experiences with different art materials. Each session offers a different theme that supports your young artist’s development. All materials are safe and non-toxic.

These classes require one adult (guardian) per child enrolled.

Ages 3 – 5 Years with Adult These classes introduce young children to art materials and new experiences through studio activities, games, and stories.

Required parent/guardian participation reinforces communication skills and assists children in developing motor skills. Shared and individual activities help children gain self-confidence and learn to express themselves. These classes require one adult (guardian) per child enrolled.

Ages 5 – 7 Years Students are exposed to a broad range of ideas and art forms through medium-specific classes, such as sculpture and painting, and through theme-based classes. Emphasis is on self-expression and experimentation.

Ages 8 – 10 & 11 – 13 Years Students strengthen creative confidence and technical abilities through medium-specific courses. Projects focus on developing observational and technical skills as well as furthering the student’s ability to think independently.

Ages 14 – 17 Years Projects and critiques continue to help develop technical skills and support the student’s ability to make personal decisions about expression, style, and content.

Fall Youth, Teen, and Family Classes Special Open House Saturday, September 9, 1:30-3pm Come to our special Saturday afternoon Open House and learn about all the exciting fall programs for youth, teens, and families. View our studios, talk with instructors about your child’s interests, and create a unique work of art to take home. This event is free and open to students of all levels and abilities.

In the studio, practice traditional Japanese paper folding techniques, or origami, and transform pieces of colored paper into amazing animals and shapes of your own!

Students will tour the galleries and determine what element may be the focus of a particular sculpture, drawing, painting, mosaic or assemblage. Teens 14-17 Years Art and Visual Culture Elaine Smollin Sat 10-2:30pm, Sept 23 – Nov 18, 8 weeks (no Nov 4) Nonmember $450 Member $405 Great for high schoolers interested in advanced art studies. This open media class previews the college course “Art and Visual Culture,” a required course for art colleges, nation-wide.

We begin each class with a presentation on contemporary art and cultural values and reasons for artistic production in various world cultures. In the studio each student explores an independent project with the guidance of the instructor. Peer discussion is highly encouraged using examples of works of contemporary art and art history.

Models will assume poses for varied lengths of time. The instructor will work with each student to refine her/his approach, while conveying ways of composing from the figure and its environment. Clothed Figure Painting Fri 10am-2:30pm, Dec 29 *Nonmember $66 Member $59.40 Work from a clothed model and paint in watercolor, acrylic, and tempera. The model will assume poses for varied lengths of time.

The instructor will work with each student to refine her/his approach, while conveying ways of composing from the figure and its environment. Includes model fee.

Pop Ups! Age: All Ages Fri 12:30-2:30pm, Dec 29 A fun pop-up card workshop for kids and adults.

Make a pop-up card, a card with unique folds, or a gift card. Learn how to illustrate, collage, and embellish your cards in a multitude of ways.

This workshop is designed for students with any level of experience in art making.

CLASSES INFORMATION Studio Class Programs Office 508.793.4333 transactions@worcesterart.org

Materials For all adult classes and workshops, please bring any appropriate supplies you already have to the first class. Instructors will go over specific supply lists during the first class meeting. Spray paints, fixatives, and aerosols are prohibited in adult and youth classes. We recommend the use of non-toxic, no-odor solvents; ask your instructor for more information. Worcester Art Museum is not responsible for materials left on the premises. All art materials are provided to youth and teen studio class programs, except when noted. Please see the full course description online for details.

Studio Availability Due to liability issues the Museum asks that students enter studios no more than 15 minutes prior to the start of class unless the instructor is present in the studio. Only registered students are allowed in the studios and galleries during classrelated activities. Because studios are cleaned at the end of each class meeting, students and instructors must completely clean up and vacate the studio by the end of their reserved studio time. Our studios may only be used for art classes during established hours.

Refund Policy - Important!

A 90% refund is given upon withdrawal in writing five or more business days before first class meeting. Withdrawal must be in writing. Email withdrawal request to: transactions@worcesterart.org.

No credits or refunds are given on withdrawals less than 5 business days before the first class meeting.

When a class is canceled, students are issued a full refund. Supervised lunch and extended day fees are non-refundable. Make-up classes are not offered if students are absent. Class tuition cannot be prorated due to student absences.

Student Pickup and Drop-off Students under the age of 14 years old are not allowed to leave early from class without written parent release form filed with the Registration desk.

Parents and guests pickup and drop-off students from the Lancaster Welcome Center, please note the Lancaster Street entrance is not accessible to wheeled devices. An accessible entrance is located on Tuckerman Street via the Stoddard Garden Court entrance. Designated spaces are available for visitors with disabilities and families with small children in two WAM parking lots–Salisbury Street and Tuckerman Street. Parents and guests must wait in the Lancaster Welcome Center or the

Museum galleries during their child’s class. Only registered students are allowed in the studios and galleries during class-related activities.

Professional Development Partnerships/Points PDPs are available for all Adult Classes.

Schedule Changes & Inclement Weather Closings In case of inclement weather, please check facebook.com/worcesterart, www.whdh.com, or call 508.793.4333. Museum classes may still be held when local schools are closed. The Museum schedules make-up classes when possible. We reserve the right to cancel any under-enrolled course, restrict the registration in a course, change instructors when necessary, and reschedule individual classes if necessary. If the Museum cancels courses or makes schedule changes, every effort will be made to notify registered students.

Photos From time to time our in-house photographers and members of the news media take pictures of students participating in classes and programs, as well as their artwork, which may be reproduced for promotional purposes. If you prefer that you or your child not be photographed, please inform the photographer. If we have used a photo or video of you that you would prefer not be used, please contact transactions@worcesterart.org, request that we remove the image, and we will remove the photo or video down from our website and not use it in future print publications. Please include the page url so we can identify it correctly.

As a courtesy to other students and our faculty Out of consideration for other students, we ask that cell phones be turned off. If you must make a phone call during class, please use the Lancaster Welcome Center to avoid disturbing others.
