elcome aboard our Royal Orchid Service and thank you for choosing to fly THAI. Allow me to wish you a Happy New Year 2014. I hope it is a year filled with happiness, health and prosperity for you and your loved ones.

Starting your New Year’s trip to Thailand is a great beginning. With the New Year celebrations still lingering in the air, January continues to be the month for many of us to enjoy, especially Thai children, as in Thailand we celebrate Children’s Day on 11 January. For those of you visiting Thailand this month, you will find plenty of children’s activities to entertain you and your family members, making your trip even more fun and memorable. In the first issue of the year, we highlight a special place to visit – Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, where the Flora Festival at the Royal Park Rajapruek is in full bloom until 28 February. It is Thailand’s largest annual horticultural exhibition, where numerous species of tropical trees and plants from around the world are on show. Chiang Mai is also known for its unique culture and cuisine, as well as night markets where you will find almost anything ranging from clothes and jewellery to local and northern Lanna arts and crafts. THAI flies to Chiang Mai with 10 flights daily. For destinations outside Thailand, this month Sawasdee highlights our newest destination – Luang Prabang in Laos, to where our sister airline THAI Smile began operating just last month. The city is a foremost tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its rich history and cultural heritage is reflected in its beautiful temples and French colonial buildings, and most recently, Luang Prabang has become a central commerce point between Thailand and China. With THAI, the wonders of Laos are easier to reach than ever. We start the month with one New Year celebration, and we end the month of January celebrating the Chinese New Year and ringing in the Year of the Horse. In Bangkok’s Chinatown, also known as Yaowarat District, tourists and locals alike can enjoy a truly cultural experience with lion dance performances, parades and fireworks. Shoppers can usually look forward to special promotions given by Chinese shop owners during the Chinese New Year celebrations. May I wish you a pleasant journey and thank you for flying THAI.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT / words Kim Reyes

ROme

awakening

Whether you crave time-tested and traditional fare or ultra-modern haute cuisine, the Eternal City will leave your taste buds wanting more

There’s an epic, if expected, battle of food in Rome: between the traditional cucina romana of neighbourhood trattorias and creative haute cuisine in more modern settings. Tasting the best of what the Italian capital has to offer will ultimately require a considered combination of both. As Rome’s only three-Michelinstar establishment, Heinz Beck’s La Pergola is undoubtedly the city’s most acclaimed restaurant. But a few up-and-coming chefs are also helping to invigorate the fine dining 30

scene in Rome, like French-born Anthony Genovese at the twoMichelin-starred Il Pagliaccio, whose experimental dishes showcase his mastery of modern flavour combinations with subtle Far East influences. Opt for the seasonal tasting menu and be sure to save room for dessert. Another rising culinary star is chef Francesco Apreda of Imàgo, whose refined take on traditional Italian dishes have garnered the restaurant a coveted Michelin star. Housed in the historic Hotel Hassler

at the top of Piazza di Spagna (the Spanish Steps), Imàgo is special occasion-worthy for providing possibly the best panoramic view of the Eternal City skyline. After taking in the sights, visit another historical Roman institution just a few small streets away from the sprawling Pantheon and Parliament buildings: Giolitti. The city’s most famous gelateria artigianale has been serving up colourful cones of gelato to politicians and well-heeled Romans since 1900. Satiate your sweet tooth

on a rainbow of flavours, from champagne and peach to pistachio and rice. An essential on any Roman culinary checklist is a plate of cacio e pepe – the simplest of pastas that reaches sublime heights when done just right, as the Romans have proved. It’s tough to claim whose version of this creamy combination of Pecorino Romano cheese and freshly cracked black pepper is Rome’s best – like asking a New Yorker for the best pizza or a Singaporean for the best chicken rice, everyone’s got their personal favourites – but the family-owned Da Felice a Testaccio is a serious contender (even Roberto Benigni is a regular). Run by the Trivelloni family since 1936, the restaurant’s tonnarelli cacio e pepe is a ritual – the waiter tosses the cheese and pasta at your table as you salivate, 

Chef Cristina Bowerman of Glass Hostaria Wander Rome’s winding streets to walk off the calories In between taking in the sights, such as the Coliseum, be sure to sample Italian mainstays like gelato Above, from top Ciauscolo and salsa of pickled veal tongue with mustard gelato at Glass Hostaria A delicate dish of soba and shrimp at Glass Hostaria Right, from top More than 100 kinds of cured meats are available at Salumeria Roscioli Roscioli also hosts wine tastings with food pairings Homemade pizza at the Roscioli bakery

watching the whole dish come together in fragrant, gastronomic harmony. Equal parts restaurant, salumeria and gourmet/wine shop, Salumeria Roscioli in the Centro Storico is a must-visit for serious foodies. The extensive deli in front boasts cold cuts, cheeses and speciality gourmet products from all around Italy, from tins of region-specific olive oil to jars of decadent smoked bottarga (cured fish roe). Further in, the main dining area is literally ensconced in shelves upon shelves of wine bottles. Throw caloric caution to the wind and order the Seleccione di Lardo – a plate of cured pork fats that make a perfect antipasto by themselves or lathered on hot toasted bread. The star is undoubtedly the Lardo di Colonnata, originating from the village of Colonnata in Tuscany, where the salted fat is cured for months between slabs of marble. The resulting lardo is practically see-through with a creamy meltin-your-mouth texture, a fragrant and salty taste, and a sweet pork flavour. Savour the salumi with generous gulps of vino; the knowledgeable staff can help you find something off the walls to suit your taste and budget. Separated from the main touristic centre of town by the Tiber river, Trastevere is one of the oldest quarters in Rome and also one of its hippest, thanks to a plethora of trendy eateries, eclectic bars and artisan shops. At Dar Poeta on Vicolo del Bologna, locals crowd in this hard-to-find hole-in-the-wall for wood-fired

Also in the neighbourhood, the Michelin-starred Glass Hostaria offers a far different experience with its ultra-modern interior and equally contemporary cuisine concocted by Puglia-born chef Cristina Bowerman, whose 15-year stint in California and Austin, Texas has infused her culinary style with multicultural inspirations. After dinner, wander over to Cioccolata e Vino (“Chocolate & Wine”) for their signature drinks that come in edible chocolate shot glasses topped with a huge dollop of whipped cream. Luckily for adventurous foodies, Rome’s small winding streets make it ideal for walking off any gastronomic guilt – and also for discovering a potential culinary gem around the next corner. After all, when in Rome...

Love from India

36

We chat with Fiona Caulfield, founder of the Love Travel guides, about falling in love with Bangalore and discovering gems worthy of her audience of “luxury vagabonds”... When did you first visit India? I first visited in 1992 and spent a night in Bombay and a week in Goa. I returned in 2001 to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad and again in May 2004 en route to the Himalayas to spend a few weeks hiking. During that last visit I made the decision to leave corporate life as the president of a consulting firm in New York City and move to India to create the Love Travel brand. You’re based in Bangalore – what do you like about this city? Bangalore has a vibrant creative and intellectual community, and I am lucky to have made some great friends. It has the best climate of any city in India, and I thoroughly enjoy having it as my base. It also lets me avoid getting caught up

elegant commercial area in the Fort District of Mumbai. Located close to the docks, the area is characterised by wide leafy streets and grand Edwardian buildings that house some of the oldest mercantile organisations in India. I discovered some magical places that immediately had me falling in love with the city, such as Britannia & Co, an Iranian-Parsi restaurant that’s usually packed at lunchtime with local office workers, serious Mumbai foodies and a few in-theknow travellers. It is most famous for its berry pulao, a fragrant rice dish made with zaresht (Iranian barberries), and the crème caramel is simply to die for. Your first guide, Love Bangalore, was published almost seven

“I remember how thrilled I was to discover Ballard Estate, an elegant commercial area in the Fort District of Mumbai.” in the intense rivalry that exists between India’s megapolis cities of Delhi and Mumbai. For your guides books, you spend a lot of time getting to know the people and places of each city. You’ve said before that the “simplest criteria for inclusion in a guide is whether or not a place or experience helps you fall in love with the destination.” Can you give some examples where that has happened? I remember how thrilled I was to discover Ballard Estate, an

years ago, and most recently you launched the fourth edition of Love Mumbai. How do you go about updating your guides and keeping things fresh? I work with a small team based in the destination and together we fact check the books to see what, if anything, has changed, and my team contributes recommendations for what should be added. I then connect with my network of friends and contacts to discover other potential additions. The next step is to embark on a series of trips to the destination to visit each potential entry and make

the decision about whether it will be in the new edition or not. This approach ensures that 100 per cent of the places in the books are visited and are hand selected for inclusion, as well as encourages serendipity and ad hoc discoveries. Tell us a little more about the Love Travel Foundation. At the moment it’s a work in progress. We have set aside 10 per cent of the Love Travel profits to date and are saving to reach a sum that we can undertake a substantial initiative in the area of “conscious travel” in India. In the meantime, we contribute to a select group of organisations that need support such as Tharangini (tharanginistudio.com) in Bangalore, which creates livelihoods for women by training them in traditional textiles and crafts. Any plans to extend the Love Travel guides to destinations outside of India? The plan is to create nine Indian titles (“Love India” has nine letters), and then to expand beyond. We have also started work on Love Sri Lanka. We have had requests and approaches to do a Love Roma, Love Morocco, Love Panama and more. I think it’s just a matter of time until we expand globally!

GUIDES MADE WITH PASSION “I believe that great journeys are like great love affairs – they never really end,” says Fiona Caulfield.

Besides India, where else do you like to travel? I am on the move constantly and travel frequently between my homes in India and Australia. In the last few years my travel outside of India has largely been within Asia, including Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Japan, China, Tibet, Malaysia and Singapore. This year, I plan to travel in Europe and the US. At the top of my bucket list is Ethiopia, “the country with 13 months of sunshine”. I really want to hike in the Simien Mountains and spend some time in Addis Ababa. For more details about the Love Travel guides, visit lovetravelguides.com

Pulling back the curtain on Bangkok’s Chinese opera scene, where troupes are content to perform for the gods / words Dave Stamboulis / photos Songkran Weerapong

I

am standing in the shadows of a dimly lit backstage area made of wooden planks, where a middle-aged gentleman sits before a cracked mirror, slowly transforming himself into a beautiful woman. The process is mesmerising and painfully slow. Paints, powders and lots of mirror gazing time is involved in a process that can take several hours, as the actor makes his change to another gender and personality. For how elaborate the ritual is, one would think I’d be watching a tour de force performance at the Met in New York City, but this is only the dusty backstage of a simple setup, constructed in a small Chinese temple in a dead-end alleyway in the bowels of Bangkok’s Chinatown. 

38

Chinese opera performers preparing their “masks” of makeup – the transformation to their characters can take hours

39

t h a i c u lt u r e

Chinese opera has long been a colourful part of Bangkok life. The Teochew Chinese, who immigrated to Thailand in the 19th century, brought along the ngiew, as the opera was called, with them as part of their cultural traditions. The ancient art form, combining literature and musical performance, is one of the oldest performance arts in the world, with roots going back to the Tang Dynasty. Regular performances at venues along Bangkok’s Yaowarat Road drew huge crowds, perhaps filling an entertainment niche somewhat akin to that of today’s television soap operas, albeit with a far more perfected and enthralling live performance. The operas are an extremely visual affair, with an astounding attention to detail being a vital part of the show. The performers use masks and highly exaggerated facial painting to illustrate their roles and show off character. Different colours represent different emotions or traits. Red stands for bravery and loyalty, while green shows impulsiveness or lack of control. Black faces show fierceness, and white shows evil or treachery, usually worn by the main villain in each performance. Additionally, lines painted on the face also have symbolic meaning. For example, a character with white lines around the nose is nowhere near as malevolent as someone whose entire face has been marked with white stripes.

Yet just as Bangkok’s traditional way of life continues to be overtaken by an endless sea of condominiums and shopping malls, so is today’s Chinese opera scene. The arrival of video and then DVD, the Internet, and more affluence and forms of entertainment – not to mention a younger generation who can’t understand Chinese – have relegated the cultural art to that of a sideshow, now found in back streets and alleyways mostly during Chinese holidays and festivals. Many of the old ngiew theatres were converted into cinemas or just left to ruin, and the performances themselves faced dwindling audiences comprised mainly of the elderly. Even the performers themselves have changed. Traditionally, all the members of these opera troupes were ethnic Chinese, with performances by young women, who began training with the troupes as small children. But as other professions and businesses became more lucrative and accessible to the Chinese community, all of a sudden there was a demand for actors and actresses lacking any of the glamour or pay of regular theatre. This niche has been filled by natives from Isaan in Thailand’s northeast. The Isaan performers not only take on stage roles, but also serve as musicians as well as positions in troupe maintenance, such as cook, seamstress or stagehand. The performers do not need to speak Chinese but just need to memorise

the words of their respective roles. Of the 30-odd opera troupes in Thailand today, less than 25 per cent of them are composed of Chinese performers. The salaries are paltry and the work is demanding. An entire troupe, comprising some 30-plus members, can earn about 25,000 baht (about US$780) per night for a performance, but when you figure in transportation costs, the elaborate costumes and other miscellaneous expenses, there isn’t much left for personal salaries. Gern, an older performer, told me she earns around 9,000 baht a month, which she said used to be enough to send 2 to 3,000 baht back home to her family. But with recent inflation, she said now she can’t send more than 500 baht a month to her family, and often she is unable to send anything at all. Yet despite the hard life – one involving picking up and moving every several days and even sleeping in hammocks below makeshift stages – not all is doom and gloom in the Chinese opera world here. Troupe managers, instead of trying to sell their performances

as entertainment, have gone with a new strategy. As Chinese communities tend to have strong beliefs in ghosts and the need for protection by guardian spirits from bad fortune, new buildings and businesses do not often spring up without the building of a shrine that is worshipped daily. And with 15 to 20,000 sacred shrines all over Thailand (not to mention Malaysia and Singapore), Chinese opera has found a new market. There is a constant need to perform special meritmaking ceremonies at each shrine annually, and thus the troupes are called in and the performances done for the deities protecting the shrine rather than the audiences themselves. Other developments in the field have also been positive. Ampan Jaroensuklab, a Thai playwright who has devoted much of his life to preserving Chinese opera, has been successful at getting Thai language infused into many of the opera performances, making them accessible to a far wider audience. Jaroensuklab said that these days, most shrines asking for a

performance request that it be in Thai, and they are willing to pay more for this as well. Add to this an effort to reach out to a wider audience online via Facebook and other social media platforms to try and market Chinese opera as a colourful spectacle that could be worth a fun night out, and one can see that perhaps all is not lost. The performers themselves remain upbeat. Lek, a young performer from Nakhon Ratchasima in Isaan, told me that he was thrilled to get to travel and see a lot of his country, and that he was proud of his work, citing an adage amongst actors that “one minute’s performance takes ten years of practice.” One famous Isaan actor, Som Nujklang, went from earning one baht a day as a boy to eventually becoming a troupe manager several decades later, so there is example and incentive to keep the actors and actresses striving. But perhaps most importantly, the opera troupes see themselves performing on a higher plane. While some Thais may look down on the performers, seeing them as itinerant gypsies, the troupe members don’t really mind. As one older female member remarked, “I know it is a dying art. The audience is dwindling. But our performances are meant for the gods and ghosts.” With such a distinguished audience, they have all the more reason to get their roles just perfect.

Chinese opera in bangkok

Opera performances take place around Chinese New Year (31 January) and during the annual Vegetarian Festival (usually in September or October), but also at local shrines throughout the year. During holiday times, a walk around Chinatown’s Yaowarat will usually reveal several performances. Look out for a performance set up behind the main Chinatown temple of Wat Mangkon Kamalawat on Pom Prap Sattru Phai, as well as at the small temple on the Chao Phraya River accessed from Charoen Krung Soi 20. Alternatively, contact local shrines or visit the Thai Chinese opera website at ngiew.com. 43

t’s still dark as I stumble out onto the streets before the crack of dawn. Silence fills the air but for the occasional rooster crow. Yet at this early hour, there are already people lining the streets – scarves tied neatly across their bodies, crouching on their knees, they utter silent prayers with their hands clasped together. A sense of anticipation builds. 

A sea of saffron and yellow robes soon heads toward them. A line of monks and novices file past in silence, with the eldest leading the way and the youngest trailing behind, alms bowls slung over their shoulders. Intermittently they pause their shuffling steps, opening their bowls as devotees’ hands stretch out to deposit sticky rice balls inside. The same movements are done over and over again, with no words said during the exchange, but there is a distinct air of gravitas and gratitude from both the givers and receivers. The solemn reverence during this ancient ritual is tranquil and calming from where I stand observing at a respectful distance on the opposite sidewalk. The last novice trails past, and the people

pack up their items and return to their homes. The magical moment is over as the familiar sounds of tuktuks, bikes and chatter fill the air. This early-morning ritual takes place every day, rain or shine, in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang in Laos. Formerly the capital, Luang Prabang is still considered the spiritual centre of the country. There are 30-odd Buddhist temples – or wats – scattered around town, the tall golden stupas hinting at the country’s religious roots, while the eclectic mix of architecture – two-storey French colonial houses and traditional Lao-style buildings on stilts – pay tribute to Laos’ rich culture and history. The bulk of Luang Prabang’s activity occurs within what is known as the historic old quarter. Described by locals as a finger, it is a peninsula surrounded by the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. “It’s impossible to lose your way here,” says Rudy, an American and Luang Prabang resident since 2012. “There are just four main roads that are linked to one another. No matter how you turn and follow small alleyways, they all eventually lead back to Sisavangvong Road.” Though compact, there is much to explore in Luang Prabang. I spend hours walking along the streets, admiring the buildings and finding cosy cafés in hidden corners – one sells delicious Western pastries and has a wonderful view overlooking the river. 

three things to discover Here

1

Take a boat ride along the Mekong river to the Pak Ou caves. The limestone caves are filled with thousands of Buddha figurines left by villagers from the surrounding areas. The ride also includes a stop at Ban Xang Hai village, famous for its homemade whisky. Just over an hour each direction, the boat ride is a great way to catch a glimpse of local life.

2

Join a local cooking class to get more insight into the unique flavours and tastes of Lao cuisine. At Tamarind – part restaurant, part cooking school – you’ll learn about Lao herbs and spices on a guided tour of the local market, as well as prepare several dishes, including varieties of jeow (dipping sauces) and mok pa, the popular steamed fish in banana leaves. tamarindlaos.com/cooking-school

3

Visit the Kuang Si waterfalls. The cascading falls form several crystal blue pools that make for fantastic photos and a popular place for a swim. Designated pools and trails to the top of the falls are clearly marked out.

STAY

La Résidence Phou Vao

Perched on a hill, La Résidence offers spectacular views of Mount Phousi and is a 15-minute walk from the old quarter. The lush greenery and tranquil grounds make it the perfect place for a relaxing retreat. At night, dine next to the candlelit pool at its restaurant, Phou Savanh. residencephouvao.com

Maison Souvannaphoum

The former residence of the late Prince Souvanna Phouma, this restored French colonial building under Angsana Hotels & Resorts has 24 rooms that blend historical charm with sophisticated amenities. Located just outside the old quarter, it’s an easy stroll or bicycle ride to the town centre, temples and night market. On your down time in the resort, go for a pampering spa treatment or a relaxing game of pétanque. angsana. com/en/maison_souvannaphoum 50

Though the city has seen much damage and times of poverty in its history, its temples are well preserved. It is easy to spend an extended period of time at each temple taking in the beautiful craftsmanship, from the fivetiered curved roof of Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham to the bejewelled mosaic motifs on the walls of Wat Xieng Thong. During my visit to Wat Paphaimisaiyaram, I find myself drawn into a conversation with the novices. Around the country, many young boys choose to enter the monasteries as novices not for religious reasons, but because it may be the only means to an education and a better life for them. Bounlath, who is 19, shares that he has been at the temple for two years, having only gone back home once, as home is a 15-hour bus

ride away. His wish is to become a teacher after he graduates and leaves the temple. Fellow novice Bandith, on the other hand, found himself drawn toward monkhood and plans to go to a Vientiane university temple. Our conversation gets cut short as someone shouts that it’s time for school. After a scramble to grab cloth bookbags, they take off to the city streets for the second time since this morning’s alms collection. The mood is less sombre and there’s enthusiastic chatter as they head toward the centre of town – the school is located at Wat Phra Phutthabat. I follow the trail of monks onto the school grounds and am told that this is the only school for novices in the entire city, with some walking as long as 50 minutes to get there each day. I’m quickly ushered out as lessons begin.

Feeling hungry, I go in search of some local fare. I discover that Lao cuisine, though similar to the cuisines around the region, has a distinct character of its own. Some tastes are familiar to those found in Southeast Asia, yet other flavours linger in the mouth that cannot quite be placed in my mind. A local resident describes Lao dishes as such: “It’s all brown and mushy looking, but the tastes are vastly different, like an explosion in your mouth.” I ask for a recommendation on where to eat, and find myself on a motorbike zigzagging through small roads until we are next to the city’s old hospital. Here, women hawk their dishes that are served up in a dozen metal bowls. My friend points out the different contents – jeow mak keua, an eggplant dip, mok pa, fish steamed in banana leaves and orlarm, a meat stew.

Most dishes feature dill and mint as well as padaek, a potent fermented fish sauce. As I sample the different dishes, I’m given the staple of the country, khao niaow, sticky rice, which I’m instructed to use my fingers to eat, while mixing it with jeow Luang Prabang, a chilli dip. To round off the meal, I try the local sweet snacks of “cat droppings” – fried coconut flour – and fried banana balls. As dusk falls, there’s a bustle of activity near the Royal Palace Museum. Locals unroll their tents and line up their wares, preparing for the night handicraft market that fills the main street every night. Keen to avoid the crowds, I make my way up the tallest point in town, Mount Phousi, where one of Luang Prabang’s treasures, the golden stupa of Wat Chom Si, is located. There are several paths leading

to the summit, the most direct involving about 300 steps. I head up a path that leads past temples and shrines, as well as Buddha’s footprint, a gold painted foot-shaped indentation in the rock. At the top, I’m greeted by a lovely sweeping view of the town, curved and tiled roofs dotting the sides of the Mekong river. I hastily find a spot for myself amidst fellow visitors who are there to catch a glimpse of the last golden rays settling upon Luang Prabang’s rooftops. As darkness falls, my company and their cameras leave, and I am left alone at the peak. As I admire the twinkling lights, the tranquil calm from the early morning returns and washes over me, and I’m once again drawn into the magic of this place. About the artist Manoth Kitticheewan has been painting since university and enjoys capturing the beauty of wild flora on paper. The characteristics of watercolour make it the perfect medium for depicting flowers in their natural beauty, and he compares the art of mixing colours to cooking. He is an illustrator for a leading gardener’s magazine in Thailand, and he also teaches watercolour painting. Keep an eye out for his book of Thai herb illustrations coming out later this year.

Koh Lipeh

This small gem of the Adang-Rawi archipelago in Satun province is the only inhabited island in the Butang group in the Tarutao National Park. Equally loved for the unspoilt beaches and the cyan blue waters, Koh Lipeh is also favoured by divers who come to explore the nearby dive sites that are teeming with exotic marine life and unspoilt reefs.

Koh Mook

Photo: Kosin Sukhum/Shutterstock

Home to several budget hotels, Koh Mook is a favourite stop-off point for backpackers looking for escapism at its best. Perhaps the island’s shining star is the Emerald Cave or Tum Morakot, where visitors are required to swim through the cave’s entrance into an opening of white sand and aquamarine waters that will leave any visitor spellbound.

When it comes to holidays worth remembering, Thailand ticks all the boxes combining good food, value for money, friendly people and idyllic beaches. But memorable beach holidays needn’t necessarily be all about high-end resorts and fancy cocktails. Sometimes, the most precious holidays are embodied in the simplest of bungalows that offer a getaway experience no luxury hotel experience can. Here are Sawasdee’s top beaches.

Koh Ngai

Photo: The Seven Seas Resort

In theory, this small island is an island district in Krabi province but more accessible from nearby Trang province. Covering a surface area of eight square kilometres, Koh Ngai (also known by its other name, Koh Hai) is a popular stopover for beach bums who yearn for an element of simplicity in life. Think bamboo huts, hammocks, coconut trees and a splendid view. For some island exploration, day trips can be made to Koh Chuak for snorkelling as well as Koh Mook.

Photo: Inmagine

Koh Kradan Who needs the Maldives when the crystal clear waters of Koh Kradan are just a plane, car and long-tail boat ride away? Getting there may sound like a bit of a trek, but once you set foot on the powdery, sun-kissed shores of this island hugged by aquamarine waters on all sides, it is worth every ounce of your sweat. Located off Trang province, Koh Kradan is, in theory, part of a national park, so visitors can certainly expect to come face to face with some wildlife. There’s only a handful of beach huts and one upscale resort in operation, so it’s best to secure a booking at one of these hotels before making the journey there to avoid disappointment. The coral reefs around the island are in excellent condition and close to shore – moray eels, lobsters and even leopard sharks have been spotted there, but the highlight has got to be the panoramic view of unspoilt landscape surrounded by water in all shades of blue. Paradise found.

ath-Taking Ceremony OPerformed by the Royal Guards

/ words Wineenart Phanvut

An oath-taking ceremony and the parade of the Royal Guards are part of grand events in celebration of His Majesty the King’s birthday anniversary. All Royal Guards from the Royal Thai Armed Forces take pride in taking the oath of allegiance, which is meant to show their loyalty to His Majesty and the discipline of the Thai military. In their bright and colourful uniforms complete with plumed hats, they come together as one and humbly give their pledge to sacrifice their lives to preserve the regal might and glory. The Royal Guards, the King’s own bodyguards, were established in 1868, the year King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), ascended the throne. The first ceremony of taking the oath of allegiance of the Royal Guards and their parade took place on 5 December 1961 on the occasion of His Majesty the King’s birthday. Since then, it has been performed on an annual basis and has become one of the most colourful events in Thailand to mark His Majesty’s birthday anniversary. The ceremony is also intended to pay tribute to His Majesty, who has ceaselessly devoted himself to the improvement of the livelihood of the people. 68

itual Change of the REmerald Buddha’s Seasonal Attire

Commonly referred to as Phra Kaeo Morakot, the Emerald Buddha is a potent religious symbol for all Buddhist Thais. It is a seated Buddha image, enshrined inside the main chapel of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, which is an important spiritual centre of Buddhism in Thailand. At the beginning of the three seasons, namely summer, the rainy season and winter, Thai people are enthusiastic about the ritual change of the Emerald Buddha’s seasonal attire in a ceremony of homage to the national palladium. This ceremony has been held continually since the reign of King Rama I (1782–1809), the first monarch of the Royal House of Chakri. In the present reign, His Majesty the King personally performs the ceremony, or delegates His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to represent him in this rite. The costumes of the three seasons are the masterpieces of Thai art and invaluable cultural heritage of Thailand. After the significant ceremony for the change of seasonal attire, His Majesty, or the Crown Prince on his behalf, also presents lustral sacred water to the people waiting for an audience with him around the main chapel of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

T

hai Airways International recently hosted the 25th Inter-Airline Management Golf Tournament 2013 (IAMGT), which was held at the Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi province. S

ervice on board a Thai Airways International flight isn’t just about a friendly smile, a graceful Thai welcome, or even the attentiveness to passengers’ personal requests for an extra blanket, a pillow or a warm cup of milk while everyone else is fast asleep. It’s also the small, elegant and ubiquitous, specially folded cloth napkins that are seen on service trolleys, on meal trays, in champagne containers, in bread baskets or in the washroom amenities stand. Meal service on board a Thai Airways International flight is no ordinary affair. While THAI serves authentic Thai tastes on board, members of the cabin crew are attentively putting personal “Touches of THAI” to the meal settings. Meal place settings in Royal First Class and Royal Silk Class are served with specially folded cloth napkins by the crew for silverware holders, for champagne bottles and buckets, and for tea pot and coffee pot holders. Decorative cloth napkin folding in unique designs has been a part of the legendary Royal Orchid Service for many years, and the techniques have been passed on from talented crew members to new members throughout

82

the years. In the beginning, cloth napkins were folded by skilled cabin crew into different geometric shapes, fans or birds for placing on plates as a decoration. These days, as more and more crew have attained this skill, more have added their own personal designs for special occasions such as a passenger’s birthday or a honeymoon trip. The crew may present a bouquet of flowers of folded cloth napkins as a souvenir to the passengers – all prepared by hand by the crew while on board. Popular items that passengers have shown a preference for are the flower bouquets and flower baskets, with the rose being an all-time favourite. So pleasant these folded napkins are to look at that a number of passengers have asked the crew to show them how to do it, which the crew are happy to oblige, of course. But a much cherished and heart-warming surprise for the crew is when they see folded hand towels made by passengers, who place them on the washroom counters along with a note of appreciation. It is during these times that the crew feel well-rewarded, knowing that passengers appreciate THAI’s onboard service.

Route Table เส้นทางการบิน

The distance and flying times between any two points on the Thai Airways International network appear under the name of the cities below, which are shown alphabetically. Distances may vary depending on the route flown and other operational factors. Flying times, although measured from the start of the engines before takeoff until the aircraft comes to a complete stop at the terminal building after landing, may also vary according to weather conditions. Royal Orchid Plus frequent-flyer members should refer to their member’s handbook to calculate accrued air miles.

Umbrella nation

Come rain or shine, a festival that is celebrated every year in Chiang Mai’s Bo Sang village is the umbrella festival. Locals wallow in the air of celebration from 17–19 January as throngs of people join in the festivities to highlight the beauty of their most prized artful tradition – the making of traditional sa paper umbrellas. Visitors can expect a cultural fiesta where they can mingle with local artisans, see how beautiful designs are hand-painted onto the umbrellas and even be a part of an umbrella procession.
