We provide affordable spinning tools making spinning more accessible

Was there someone who inspired you in your fiber arts journey?

My family always made stuff, all kinds of things, so Mom, grandpa, granny

How did you learn about making espinners?

We winged it. Made from scratch, and had several (terrible) prototypes

Do you have fiber animals?

I have 10 fiber goats, Non pareil is my favorite. Galahad is a creepy uncle, but very loved. I love mohair, soft shiny [and] warm

What are your other interests/hobbies outside?

I like learning to identify trees and plants, as well as gardening

LEICESTER LONGWOOL

The Leicester Longwool breed of sheep dates back to the mid1700s in Leicestershire, England and was developed by Robert Bakewell, who used a series of breeding programs in order to improve marketable livestock. This breed combines the hardiness of the animals and production of a long, heavy fleece with an early maturation. From England, the breed made its way to Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania. In addition to being one of America’s founding fathers, George Washington was also a progressive agriculturalist who imported and raised the breed in the United States. Despite its earlier popularity, the breed lost favor in the 1800s to Merino and other fine wool breeds of sheep. In the United States, by the 1930s and 1940s, Leicester Longwool numbers decreased and the breed was likely extinct.

Enter the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In 1990, the Foundation reestablished the breed in North America by importing sheep from Tasmania. Several conservation flocks have been established Although the breed remains rare globally, the population of Leicester Longwool sheep in North America is increasing. Generally, the sheep adapt well to a wide variety of climates and conditions.

Currently, Leicester Longwool sheep are found in the United States as well as Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain. According to The Livestock Conservancy, the breed’s current status is “threatened”, meaning fewer than 1,000 annual registrations in the United States and estimated global population below 5,000. Why preserve the rare breeds? The desire to maintain purebred stock is known as genetic conservation. Different breeds were developed for different purposes, and keeping a variety of breeds is the best way to ensure the qualities we may need remain available.

Simon, blue ram from The Rosefield

As mentioned above, fleece production was one of the characteristics sought in developing this breed. The fleece of the Leicester Longwool should be dense (having thick staple). It should be lustrous and should have a well-defined crimp or wave from skin to tip Locks are long (up to 14 inches in 12 months); the breed is commonly sheared twice a year. Natural colors include white, black, and a varied gray (known as English blue). The typical fiber diameter for a Leicester Longwool is 32 to 38 microns.

Leicester Longwool locks are usually a bit longer and finer than the fiber produced by the Lincoln Longwool and Cotswold. In fact, when the breed initially returned to the United States, several fleece judges confused it with mohair! However, emphasizing fineness in Leicester Longwool fiber is contrary to the breed’s distinct qualities Leicester Longwool fiber should be enjoyed in all its glory for its strength, drape, shine and open crimp. The fiber takes color very well. Spinning with worsted techniques makes the most of the fiber’s luster and results in smooth, durable yarns with exceptional suppleness. Woolen techniques and novelty yarns are also great fun. Finer spun yarn produces more pronounced drapes, which can be used for lace and lightweight woven textiles The fiber felts beautifully and is a favorite among wet and needle felters Leicester Longwool is a versatile, durable, and brilliant fiber Simply match the yarn weight and structure to your goal, and enjoy this great fiber and its many uses while helping to ensure the breed’s preservation.

Peg Loom Rugs

and tips

Warp your Loom Weave Tie off your Rug

Measure out your warp using a set of clamps

Instead of tying your warp to the pegs, slip the warp through the hole, and hook it over the peg to hold it in place.

Watch your first and last peg. Make sure they do not draw in as you work to the top of the pegs

Straight edges can be obtained by taking care when you empty full pegs, and start the next section of fiber.

Take your time squaring up your rug. A fabric cutting board is a great way to see where the rug needs to be adjusted

Tying your second set of knots is key in how your rug will lay. Adjust the rug again before you start tying.

The Finish

Wash your rug. Fiber and yarn is almost always dirty, and a good wash will lock in how the rug is set

If working with animal fibers felting your rug is a great way to increase durability. I prefer to shock with temperature changes (wash with hot and rinse with cold) while agitating the rug in a laundry tub.
