FARM & FIBERS

by TeDi Jansen

What fiber animals do you have? We have llamas, alpacas, and angora bunnies. I am partial to the personalities and variety of fiber in llamas. Plus they are majestic while still being comical. I still love my bunnies and there is nothing better than holding a three week old angora bunny.

How long have you been in business We have been a farm since 2013 but we started doing fiber products in 2019 and became an llc in 2020.

Was there someone who inspired you in your fiber arts journey? I was really inspired by my friend JoAnn. She raises llamas as well and really got me interested in the fiber end of things

Do you have a favorite base/ blend/ fiber? I love llama / angora rabbit / cormo mixes or alpaca/merino( or Shetland) / and angora rabbit.

What makes WAFA special for you? Wafa is a Godsend for me. Although I didn’t switch to WAFA from in person shows during Covid, WAFA makes it possible for me to build a community of friends and mentors as well as have sales to help support the farm. I have Lupus that is severely limiting and my physical ability to get to, set up, be present for the patrons, and take everything down and get home is all but non existent. So WAFA makes a fiber community available to me for learning, community, and sales.

THE CORRIEDALE SHEEP and the Enduring Beauty of Its Wool HEATHER CAMPBELL OF PURLY SHELL FIBER ARTS

Corriedale were created on the basis of a sheep that was sturdier than Merino with a wool that would still be highly sought after. They were created simultaneously in New Zealand and Australia by crossing Merino with Lincoln and later Border Leicester and possibly Romney. The goal was a sheep with a beautiful fleece, and who had a commercial body type. Corriedale only come in white, and are polled. They’re easy to handle, and not the brightest sheep but that’s ok, they just hang out and make incredible fleece. They’re incredibly cute with wooly faces and quintessential sheepy in expression. They look like squishy teddy bears Corriedale fleece is evenly crimped with a medium staple averaging around 26 microns. They grow a large fleece, often over 10 pounds of useable fleece as the fleece is dense. It’s resilient and should have a good handle making it suitable for many uses. Since it’s a longer staple than merino it’s harder wearing. Over the years the US growers have developed a more finely crimped often finer micron fleece. We also introduced natural colored corriedale who are not considered registered corriedale.

Corries maintain incredible popularity due to their reliability in fleece, and meat, along with the fact they do well as range sheep or in close quarters. They’re easy lambers, often having twins and good moms. For a hand spinner, good Corriedale is easy to spin. It’s excellent for beginners, with it’s strong crimp creating a yarn that is sturdy yet springy. It has good memory in garments. While it’s not 19 micron merino soft, it’s often next to skin soft and has a nice staple length of 3-5 inches. Some farms even grow longer staples than that. We have seen Corriedale with staple length as long as 8 inches! Corriedale can be used in so many different ways, I think it makes excellent sweater yarn for those who don’t want a longwool but want more durability. It also makes incredibly nice fiber for shawls and socks. When purchasing Corriedale it’s important to discern whether the US flock you’re buying from us US style, or New Zealand style. Many will have a distinct preference to what they spin. Commercial corrie is almost always NZ in style.

Purly Shell Fiber Arts purlyshellyarn.com

_established in 2014, is a brick and mortar yarn shop in Ilwaco WA. Of course that sentence doesn’t sum us up. In reality we are fiber artists, shepherds, indie dyers, and artists. Fiber is our whole life, and we love it. We dye one of a kind colorways in pop culture themes. Our fiber is sourced from local farms, including our own and reputable fiber mills. We focus on small, sustainable, humane and women owned. We love what we do and it shows in our products.

Hand dyed fiber and yarn for your fiber arts needs. Each braid and skein created just for you by myself. I've always loved color, and I've been doing something in the fiber arts since I was 8. Dyeing is my perfect matchup of the two. I find inspiration everywhere I go, whether it's scenes in nature, food, holidays, stories, space and even music.
