VENDOR INTERVIEW

with

RACHEL POST

How did your business get started?

I have always been a creative soul. I gravitated to studying art at a very young age. While attending college I focused on photography and two dimensional art receiving a Bachelors degree in Art. Two years later, a Master's degree in Art Education B A , 1992, I studied metalsmithing and photography M A , 1994, my abstract thesis focused on Multi-Cultural Art, focusing on Indigenous art. In the early 2000's I started my creative business. Back then it was so difficult to have your art seen. During this time I was represented through art galleries. In 2005, Etsy came on the scene as a Beta version and I opened my shop within the first month they went live Amazing how times have changed.

What Is your business mission?

I enjoy creating and sharing what I love to do. I believe in quality of craftsmanship and individual artistry through each piece I create. I strive to create one of a kind creations that can not be mass produced. I focus on using top quality fiber and materials. I believe the act of creating should be fun and inspiring. My main goal is to offer beautiful blended fiber batts and yarn that will keep your love of creating fresh and new

Was there someone who inspired you in your fiber arts journey?

My grandmother was a seamstress back in the 1940's. She was a tough New Yorker and a Rosie the Riveter She enjoyed crocheting and knitting She taught me how to crochet when I was a very young child. We were very close and spent many hours at yarn and fabric stores. I learned from her my grit and the calmness of creating.

January

I love Merino wool! My main go to for spinning and using in my batts. I also love Merino/Tencel blends when dyeing. I love the pops of shine and how the variations of color how it takes dye.

What are your other interests/hobbies outside?

Oh my.... I have many. I love rock hounding. I cut and cab(polish) my own stones for my jewelry. Antiquing. I love to hunt for antique buttons, sewing notions, and anything fiber related. Illustrating and watercolor

When I retire from teaching special education in a few years, I plan to weave (I have a Saori loom), printing on my 1900's printing press, stain glass, leather working, and, sewing.

When I was 15 years old, I worked out at Jane Fonda's studio doing aerobic classes with Madonna, David Hasselhoff, and Brigitte Nielsen. I have been teaching students with moderate/severe disabilities for over 15 years. I was teacher of the year 2021-2022 for our school district

I had a mohawk in high school.

What makes WAFA special for you?

The community! I love how positive, encouraging, helpful, and inspiring everyone is. I found WAFA during the pandemic, at a time that I know many people needed it.

Thank you so very much for embracing me to be apart of the creative, fibery, community.

Do you have a favorite base/ blend/ fiber? What is special about it?
Tell us something folks would be surprised to know about you.

1 0FunScrapYarn Ideas

Is one of your Fiber Resolutions for 2023 to use up your stash? For some people, that stash includes leftover yarn from previous projects. Or perhaps projects that didn’t work out. These “scraps” might be a hundred yards or just a couple. No matter what you have for scraps, one of the projects suggested below just might be what you need to use them up. You can Google instructions for most activities listed here. And finally make room in your stash for new yarn!!

Use a pin or zoom loom to make small squares of fabric that you can use to create a larger piece (scarf, shawl, vest, and if you have enough, a blanket).

Roll scrap yarn into balls and needle felt them as dryer balls or felted figures. Do not use plant fiber yarn for this- wool or alpaca are what you need.

Make pom-poms (either single color or mixed).

Tie short runs of yarn together to make a skein of novelty yarn. Fray the loose bits that escape the knots to create texture. Use this reclaimed yarn in weaving, crochet, or knitting.

Incorporate interesting looking yarn into wet felted scarves and wraps. Once again, best for protein-based yarns. Crochet or knit embellishments like flowers, leaves, sheep, or more to use in other projects or as ornaments or to embellish gift wrapping. Use some of it to tie up skeins of handspun when you take them off the swift or niddy noddy. Make tassels (either single colors or mixes). Yarncanreplaceribbontotieup gifts.Keepitasitisorbraidit.You canalsousealucettomake cordorknit/crochetI-cord. Scrap Yarn Substitute scrap yarn in a pattern that calls for a solid yarn. Either for the entire pattern or in key places like cuffs, collars, and hems. Or use it to add random stripes.
