FEBRUARY VENDOR INTERVIEW

Macedo’s Mini Acre By TeDi Jansen

n e e r u Ma o d e c a M

HOW DID YOUR BUSINESS GET STARTED? 18 years, one of our daughters came home from working in the local yarn store and declared "I found the best yarn, its' soft and easy to work with, but we have to find a way to get it cheaper"

WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS'S GOAL Our goal is to promote a local fiber/product. We are the recipients of carbon beneficial grants and strongly believe that growing and wearing locally produced garments helps the planet

HOW DID YOU LEARN YOUR CRAFT, WAS THERE SOMEONE WHO INSPIRED YOU IN YOUR FIBER ARTS JOURNEY? Hands on, plus working alongside other fiber artists. I have my great grandmother's carding combs (granted, we used them for sheep's wool) and I have had many opportunities to learn from others over the years.

WHAT FIBER ANIMALS DO YOU HAVE? DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE? DO YOU HAVE OTHER FARM ANIMALS? Alpaca and llama. Can’t name a favorite, I'll be in trouble. Yes, chickens, bees, farm cats & spoiled dogs

WHAT ELSE MAKES YOUR BUSINESS SPECIAL? It's a family thing - husband mainly runs the mill and does the tractor work, we have grandson help/work summers and vacations

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE BASE/ BLEND/ FIBER? WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT IT? Alpaca! Eco friendly, soft, blends well with other fibers, antimicrobial, no lanolin to scour out

WHAT MAKES WAFA SPECIAL FOR YOU? A sense of community, fiber folks working together

WINDSOR FARMS RABBITRY

MY HUSBAND AND I STARTED WINDSOR FARMS RABBITRY AND YARNS IN THE 1980’S IN WINDSOR, MAINE. IN 1998 WE MOVED THE WHOLE FAMILY AND ALL OUR CRITTERS FROM COAST TO COAST AND LANDED IN OREGON. FIRST CAME SPINNING, THEN KNITTING, DYEING, BLENDING WITH OTHER FIBERS, MAKING YARNS FOR SALE, AND HAVING FINISHED GOODS READY TO WEAR. I ENJOY THE FACT THAT I CAN WEAR AN ANGORA HAT AND SCARF TO THE BARN AND THE ANIMAL THAT PRODUCED THE FIBER TO MAKE THEM IS JUMPING AROUND WANTING TO BE FED.

Colors from the Earth by TeDi Jansen

The Adventure is Yours

When I started botanical dyeing my mentor told me that dyeing with plants and bugs was like brewing a lovely cup of tea. I thought that meant it was going to be easy but I was wrong. The perfect cup of tea is steeped for the correct range of time and temp for the specific leaves you are using. Botanical dyeing and growing dye plants is the same - there is a science to it and also an art. To that end, experimentation is encouraged! Botanical dyeing Is a personal experience, not only because the plants and bugs connect us to the land but because every dyers experience is different. Colors and shades may vary from region to region based on the water that is available. How fibers are scoured, mordanted and tannined affects the outcome. Plants that grow wild in the ditches in one place are not only not available but could be considered invasive in another. Regional variations in how the plant or fiber is grown, what the animal ate or the soil the plant was grown in can affect the fiber and how It accepts the dye. All this to say that the adventure is yours to have. Your experiences will teach you as much as your research. Go fast and try lots of things, go slow and dedicate a year to a specific dye (I did this). Grow something in your garden and (with safety precautions) harvest it and throw it in the pot! Look for teachers who invite you along on their journey and share their experiences. Take a few notes along the way because, love It or hate It, you might want to remember what you did.

Dyeing the Rainbow This list is not exhaustive. Some plants give more than one color
