APRIL VENDOR INTERVIEW

with Carole Ricketts Corey of Carole Makes

WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS'S GOAL?

My goal with fiber arts, specifically Angora related fiber arts is two fold: one, is to continue the traditions or spinning and weaving and to make them accessible and exciting for a new generation. These artisan crafts can’t die; we must carry these traditions on but also add our own unique perspective to the generations long story. Secondly, not only do I want to provide top quality angora based products but we have become an unlikely bunny sanctuary and it has become a very special place in my mission. I did not set out to find rescues or suurrenders but at the moment we have 18 angoras (mixture of giant, English and French) over half of our adults are rescues or surrenders. They found me! We have taken them in, spoiled them rotten, worked toward rabbit education and given them the space and tools to heal and thrive as a regular, well loved and cared for bunny.

CAROLE VENDS IN THE FARM CATEGORY AND IS FROM PLAINFIELD, IN.

WAS THERE SOMEONE WHO INSPIRED YOU IN YOUR FIBER ARTS JOURNEY?

My 10 year old daughter inspires me the most to keep going in my fiber arts journey. I know she is watching me and learning so many things about womanhood, running a business and taking care of animals. She is the most amazing shepherdess in training! I want to do well to make her proud of me, even if she won’t follow in my footsteps. I just want her to see passion, hard work and responsibility in my example.

HOW DID YOU LEARN YOUR CRAFT?

You’re going to laugh, but I literally went to down the rabbit hole. I learned to crochet in college. So then I wanted to knit. I mastered knitting and then had my mom teach me all the advanced knitting techniques - cables, using double points, color work, sock knitting etc she and I took a spinning class together when I was working on my masters and I kept going. I wanted to learn how to dye my own yarn. And now that I’ve learned all these wonderful crafts, I wanted to have my own fiber source.

WHAT FIBER ANIMALS DO YOU HAVE? DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE?

We have 18 angoras, 4 dogs and.a cat. I would have more farm animals but we have run out of space and I have no desire to move. My rescues hold such a dear place in my heart and I have 2 angoras who passed last year that I still miss greatly.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?

I am 41 and married with one daughter Bailey. Carolemakes is a fabric and fiber small business that I run out of my home studio. We offer crafting classes as I see education to be a major goal in doing what I do. I have a BA in Youth Ministry from Goshen College and a masters in congregational ministry. My previous background before small business fiber arts is in ministry, early childhood education and elementary education special education. I have Rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and early onset osteoporosis. Chronic pain is a daily challenge but never an excuse.

WHAT MAKES WAFA SPECIAL FOR YOU?

WAFA is an amazing opportunity to connect with fellow like minded fiber enthusiasts across the miles. It’s amazing to support one another no matter how big or small your farm or business might be.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE FIBER? WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT IT?

Angora of course. I love the blend alpaca and angora together for a fantastic halo and beautiful drape. I also love angora for its softness and heat insulation. I am always cold. I even had to buy a hoodie sweatshirt in Orlando in July on family vacation!
