Hey Awesome

A book about anxiety, courage, and being already awesome

Hey Warrior

A book for kids about anxiety

Key Sales Points:

Anxiety often tilts the focus to the negative - what kids cant do, or what feels bigger than them. This book tilts the focus back to their strengths.

It explains that the same brain that can make us feel anxious sometimes, also comes with incredible strengths. The book has easily explained, practical strategies to help children strengthen against anxiety in the short-term and the long-term.

If kids with anxiety could see their strengths, they would feel so much bigger than their anxiety. They would feel bigger than everything - as though a tiny, tip-toed stretch could have them touching the top of the world from where they are. This book is a reminder for all kids that everything they need to be brave, strong and brilliant is already in them.

Ups and Downs

A book for kids about big feelings

All feelings are important - the magical, the messy, and the inbetween. Sometimes though, big feelings can have us behaving in ways that aren’t so, let’s say... shiny. This happens to all of us. The more young people understand how and why, the more they can build the capacity to feel their feelings and manage them in positive ways. ‘Ups and Downs’ draws on Polyvagal Theory, a widely accepted neuroscientific theory, to support young people to understand why they feel and do as they do, and how to do differently when they need to. Driving brains and bodies isn’t easy! It takes time, experience, and the right information, so let’s give them that.

Dear You, Love From Your Brain

A book for kids about the brain

Like all strong, beautiful, important things, brains take time to build. Along the way, children have an enormous capacity to influence the brain -building process in profound and enduring ways. First though, they need information that will help them perform their magic. This book will help children discover more about the brain - how it works, what it needs, and how to love it big so it loves them bigger.

But We're Not Lions

The animals were mighty and magnificent, but they were miserable! For way too long, theyd been forced to become something that didn’t feel right - something that felt too much like bad days and scratchy things. The animals needed a hero, or someone to show them that a hero was in each of them all along. A book about boundaries, peer pressure, self-esteem, and selfacceptance, and a reminder for all kids that the very best thing about them, is them.

All the Pieces

When a Loved One Dies From Substance Use

A picture book to help children understand the loss of a loved one to drug overdose. Often, children who lose a loved one to overdose are not truthfully told what happened to the person who died, because of the stigma associated with this type of death. They often assume that the death was their fault (rather than that it was the symptom of a disease) and that it's not okay to remember their loved one, nor is it okay to feel angry about the death. This book aims to help parents and practitioners address these specific areas and provide validation/ normalization of these grief responses.

You'll Be There

This gentle and affirming story encourages readers to remember a loved one in small and meaningful ways through their own life experiences. Our loved ones are always with us, and we can remember them not only with past experiences, but with future ones as well. Whether it's making a snowman just like they used to, or watching the fireworks they would love, or simply being thankful for the time spent with them, they will always be there. This companion book to You'll Find Me offers gentle and positive ways to incorporate a lost loved one's presence into future life experiences. The soothing narration and soft scenes allow space for loss while encouraging a transition to remembrance and hope.

The Thing About Love

Sometimes love happens in an instant. From their first meeting, a kid and his dog become best friends. As the years go by, their bond grows deeper as they play games, go on adventures, learn new tricks, comfort each other, and celebrate milestones together. But when it's time to say goodbye, there's heartache and empty spaces everywhere. Despite the sadness, love remembers . . . and never goes away.

My Grief Handbook

Why Grief Hurts and How to Cope

Grief can be complicated and painful. Our memories, relationships, good times and worries are unique, and these all affect how we experience a loss. No two people will experience grief in the same way because all of our relationships are specific to us. But there are frameworks for understanding our reactions when someone dies. Lots of people have found it helpful to understand these frameworks, as knowing what's going on with grief can help us find ways to cope with the loss, let go of some of the pain, and find ways to still have a good future. Based on years of research, this book includes some first-hand experiences from people who have been through grief, to show how the ideas could work in real life. However, this is not another person's story. It is a guide to understanding your own. By getting to know how we are processing grief, we can start getting on with it - working alongside it and moving forward.

Ping's Perfect Pot

KNEAD, MUSH, MASH. Ping molds a pot for Lunar New Year. When Ping and Grandpa bring a tangerine tree home for Lunar New Year, Ping decides to make the perfect pot to go with it. But making a pot is hard. With Grandpa's encouragement, she tries again and again to get it just right. The first is too clumsy, the second crumbles, and the third is too flimsy. What if she can't make the perfect pot? Will it ruin the new year? For anyone feeling discouraged over learning something new, Ping's Perfect Pot reminds them not to give up when something isn't immediately easy. Perfection takes practice, patience, and, in the end, the love and effort you put into it. Backmatter provides more context and the deeper meaning of Lunar New Year traditions and symbols found within the story, as well as around the world.

Soothing rhymes and soft illustrations convey the peace of being alone with your thoughts. This is a gentle introduction to the concept of being an introvert, as well as an invitation for child and grown-up readers alike to observe and imagine their inner world and the world around them. What can you hear when you stay quiet as mud?

Waffle Can't Decide

Developing solid decision-making skills is a fundamental milestone for children as they learn to navigate the world and all the choices in it. Simply said, Waffle Can't Decide is a super relatable and engaging story about making decisions and being decisive. Blue socks! Red socks! Striped socks! Within a swirl of indecisiveness, Waffle just can't decide what to do! And suddenly everything turns into a deciding disaster! Every day we need to all make all kinds of decisions. Some are easy so we don't need to think about them much. Others are tough and we need time to ponder. Decisions are important for bringing us joy, and they are crucial for survival. Everyday we make observations about the color of sky, the sound of waves, the smell of flowers, the taste of honey, but decision-making is more cerebral and abstract. As young brains develop, understanding how the brain thinks and chooses will help children better navigate the world and all the choices in it.

A Perfectionist's Guide to Not Being Perfect

It's hard for teens to be happy when they've created a very narrow window of what defines success. The goal of this helpful book is to encourage teens to maintain their desire to achieve without striving to always be perfect and to appreciate and love who they are just as they are, not for what they do or accomplish. Finding a balance between work and play is key. Challenging perfectionism is about the pursuit of happiness. When teens can recognize that perfectionism is a disadvantage, they can become mo tivated to do something about it. For many, it may just be shifting the perfectionism a bit to land in a more positive place. It might be about deciding when and where to be slightly perfectionistic, when and where they can let go of high standards and all-or-nothing thinking, and when it's okay to simply do a "good enough" job on something. Topics covered include: What is Perfectionism & Why Change it?

My Body's Power Pack

How to Manage your Energy and Stay in Charge!

My Body's Power Pack uses elements of neuroscience to help children understand why their energy ebbs and flows, and why this may cause dysregulation. It provides gentle neuro-affirmative coping strategies, including the basics of energy accounting (which is like the popular 'spoons theory' for adults). The story arc introduces the idea of Dremlins (drainer gremlins, who 'drain' a child's energy) as a metaphor for tough events. The book empowers children with language to understand their experiences, offers suggestions on what the child can do to cope, and offering advice and support for parents and carers too.

All Dogs Have ADHD

An affirming introduction to ADHD

This delightful revised edition of All Dogs Have ADHD takes an inspiring and affectionate look at Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). With all-new images from the canine world, it explores a variety of traits that will be instantly recognisable to those who are familiar with ADHD. Charming colour photographs of dogs bring to life familiar ADHD characteristics such as being restless and excitable, getting easily distracted, and acting on impulse. It combines humour with understanding to reflect the difficulties and joys of raising a child with ADHD and celebrates what it means to be considered different.

ADHD Is Our Superpower

The

Amazing Talents and Skills of Children with ADHD

If you have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), you might struggle with things like concentrating in school, or sitting still, or remembering lots of instructions. But ADHD is also a superpower. In this book you will meet different girls and boys with ADHD who can do amazing things. You might recognise some of these strengths as things that you can do too! Some of these strengths help with everyday life, like being able to hyper-focus on a task or having boundless energy to try new things. Some strengths are superpowers for interacting with others, like having a strong sense of what is fair or entertaining friends and family to make them feel happy. Each character also shares things that you can ask grown-ups to do to help you, like providing visual aids, creating calm spaces, communicating effectively and being kind and patient.

Author Bio:

Judith Barker is an English teacher who has taught phonemic awareness to children in Europe, the Middle East, India and China. Judith published her first children’s book, The Oo in Uluru, in 2019 and it soon won a Book of the Year award from Speech Pathology Australia. Ee in the Sea followed in 2020 and O in the Snow in 2021.

When Judith is not writing children’s stories or plays, she teaches music therapy and meditation. She lives in Melbourne with her family and adorable Australian terriers, Nellie and Dusty.

Originally from New Zealand, Janie Frith attended art school and then became an art teacher. In 2006 Janie moved to Australia with her family and now lives in Foster, South Gippsland. Janie holds art classes in her studio, Art Blast. This is where Janie spends most of her time, usually with her naughty border collie Lucy snuggled under her feet.

The NG in Ningaloo

The NG in Ningaloo is a fun Australian-themed phoneme story that teaches young readers about the vowel sound NG and where they can find it in different words. Beautifully illustrated by Janie Frith, the rich colours and vibrant use of multi-media enhance the magical experience.

The book highlights the many different creatures both on land and in the sea in northwestern WA and the Ningaloo Reef. The first book from Judith and Janie, the OO in Uluru, won a 2019 Book of the Year award from Speech Pathology Australia; this is their seventh book, the others focussing on the vowel sounds A, EE, I, O, OO and AU.

Judith attributes Dr Seuss’ fantastical tales about faraway places to her love of writing children’s books. She is an award-winning author, education consultant and playwright. Her desire to lend a ‘helping hand’ to those involved in the art of teaching basic reading skills resulted in a series of wonderfully written and illustrated, Australian phoneme-themed stories which include, ‘The OO in Uluru,’ ‘The EE in the Deep Blue Sea’ and ‘The O in the Snow.’ Apart from developing reading skills, the books foster imagination, language and sound-spelling recognition.

What's That? title features Myke Mollard's vibrant cinematic drawings of a wide range of Australian animals. And it's jampacked with fascinating facts!
