Decodables Overview What are Decodables? Lioncrest Education has curated five different decodable reading series to complement your Systematic Synthetic Phonics program. These series can be implemented in the classroom and provide a variety of resources to suit your needs, whether you use them as home readers or for in-class practice and consolidation.

Decodable readers are carefully written books where most words can be sounded out using the phonics skills a child has already been taught. Unlike other early reading books that may include unpredictable vocabulary, decodable readers follow a controlled scope and sequence, aligning with specific letter-sound patterns. For example, if a child has learned the sounds for the letters s, a, t, p, i, and n, a decodable reader at that stage would include words like “sat,” “tap,” “pin,” and “nap,” allowing the child to decode each word independently without relying on pictures or memorization.
How they work Decodable readers provide structured practice that reinforces recently taught phonics skills. Each book introduces words that match the child’s current knowledge, gradually increasing in complexity as new phonics patterns are learned. This approach helps children develop strong decoding habits, improve reading accuracy, and build fluency. The process is grounded in the science of reading, which emphasizes explicit, systematic phonics instruction paired with opportunities to practice in connected text.
Why they matter Decodable readers are essential for early literacy because they prevent children from relying on guessing or picture cues, which can hinder reading development. By giving learners text they can actually read, these books boost confidence, support independent reading, and reinforce phonics instruction. Research shows that children using decodable texts apply letter-sound knowledge more consistently and accurately than those reading less controlled texts.

Decodables Overview Choosing and using Decodable Readers When selecting decodable readers, it is important to: • Match books to the child’s phonics scope and sequence • Ensure high decodability (ideally 90% or more of words can be decoded) • Select engaging, age-appropriate stories to maintain motivation Decodable readers can be used in small-group instruction, guided reading, or independent practice, providing repeated opportunities to apply phonics skills and strengthen reading fluency. In summary, decodable readers are a powerful tool for helping children transition from learning letter sounds to reading real text confidently, forming a strong foundation for lifelong reading success.
Fully-Decodable Fully-decodable books contain 90% to 100% words that match explicitly taught letter-sound correspondences and learned high-frequency words. These series contain a selection of fiction and non-fiction designed to suit all readers.
Highly-Decodable Highly-decodable texts contain minor variations or untaught sight words to maintain the book’s natural phrasing and narrative flow. These series contain fiction and nonfiction with a wide range of themes to engage readers of different reading interests.

Hi-Lo Readers These readers feature age-appropriate interests, content, and illustrations with a lower reading level. With engaging and exciting stories they are aimed at reluctant readers and those with a lower reading level.
