Arabic, one of the official languages of the United Nations, is spoken by more than half a billion people around the world and is of increasing importance in today's political and economic spheres. The study of the Arabic language has a long and rich history: earliest grammatical accounts date from the 8th century and include full syntactic, morphological, and phonological analyses of the vernaculars and of Classical Arabic. In recent years the academic study of Arabic has become increasingly sophisticated and broad. This state-of-the-art volume presents the most recent research in Arabic linguistics from a theoretical point of view, including computational linguistics, syntax, semantics, and historical linguistics. It also covers sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and discourse analysis by looking at issues such as gender, urbanization, and language ideology.
By Jonas Elbousty, Roger Allen
An engaging collection of contemporary short stories from various Arabic countries develops students' mastery of literary analysis and cultural awareness Aswat Mu'asira introduces advanced level students to contemporary short stories from across the Middle East. Fifty-five stories in Arabic from twenty countries engage students with current topics and literary approaches that open the door to discovering both established and emerging authors and literary traditions. The book includes voices from often overlooked Arabic-speaking countries and peoples, giving readers the opportunity to broaden their understanding of Arabic cultures. While most Arabic literature textbooks include only excerpts of longer works, the short stories in this collection are designed to be read in one sitting, giving students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a complete piece of literature.

Designed to be used simultaneously with Jusuur 1: Beginning Communicative Arabic, this workbook teaches students the letters, short vowels, and diacritics found in Arabic. As students learn new letters in the alphabet workbook, they strengthen their literacy skills through the reading and writing exercises in Jusuur 1. A distinguishing feature is that it introduces letters approximately in the order of letter frequency rather than in the traditional alphabetical order. This method, tested extensively in the classroom, enables students to begin to read and write meaningful phrases they are learning, as early as possible.

What is the word for peacebuilding in Arabic? How is bilateralism translated? Diplomacy Arabic is a convenient guide for Arabic language learners, featuring common terms and expressions essential for success in diplomatic communication. Diplomacy Arabic can be used as either a comprehensive reference or a study aid. The book features more than 1,300 expressions, terms, and idioms divided into ten areas of diplomatic discourse: general terms, concepts and practices, diplomatic service and protocol, organizations, elections and government, negotiations, treaties and agreements, conflict resolution and defense, civil society and human rights, and globalization and economic development. Each chapter follows a logical learning path-for example, the section on negotiations begins with vocabulary that references types of negotiations and then addresses the players involved and the process of negotiating.

Learning to write fluidly in Arabic takes practice. This short workbook helps beginning learners practice each letter in all of its forms by tracing real Arabic words. Learners trace different words across each line to practice letter formation on tracing paper that is bound into the book. The words, handwritten by a native Arabic speaker, show a natural flow and present a model of clean handwriting. It can be used independently or alongside a textbook giving beginning learners a proven, effective means of improving their Arabic handwriting. Along with the workbook, audio of the practice words is also provided. Listening to the words as learners trace the handwriting facilitates acquisition of the Arabic writing and phonetic system, which strengthens reading comprehension skills.

This study uses modern linguistic theory to analyze a frequently recurring syntactic phenomenon in the Hebrew Bible that has thus far resisted explanation: The combination of the two particles and produces a construction that is notoriously difficult to describe, analyze syntactically, and translate. Dictionaries of Biblical Hebrew offer a dizzying variety of translations for this construction, including "that if," "except," "unless" "but," "but only," and "surely," among other possibilities.
In this book, Grace J. Park provides a new approach that strives for greater precision and consistency in translation. Park argues that is used in three patterns: the "full focus" pattern, the "reduced focus" pattern, and the less common "non-focus" pattern. Her syntactic analysis of all 156 occurrences of the construction in the Bible lends greater clarity to the contested passages. Drawing on recent linguistic research into the typology of clausal nominalization as well as previous work on contrastive focus, this innovative project provides important new insight into the syntax of Biblical Hebrew. It will be especially valuable for scholars seeking to translate more consistently and accurately.

Italian Language and Culture through Film
By Cristina Pausini, Carmen Merolla
An intermediate- to advanced -level Italian textbook that aims to teach language through film, focusing on Italian movies from 2010 to 2017. Teaching language through cinema is a widespread and proven practice that engages all four main language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing), and this text utilizes the proven format and pedagogy of Pausini and Antonello Borra's previous book, Italian Through Film (Yale UP, 2003), which is regarded highly among teachers. Featured films in this book span genres, address a wide range of themes, and are set in various parts of Italy, encouraging students and teachers to more fully engage with the complexity of Italian cinema. As in Italian through Film, the activities based on the films are divided into three main categories (before, during, and after viewing the film) with a natural progression from warm-up questions to closed and controlled exercises

A fascinating cultural and linguistic history of the Slavic languages, exploring the deep connections and distinctions between them water, whiskey, and vodka are three words that seem to have nothing in common, but each of them comes from the same root. This takes a deep dive into the origins of the Slavic languages, from a common ancestor language through various cultural and historical shifts to arrive at the current breadth of languages. The book takes a captivating look at the unique sociolinguistic context of the Slavic languages and pays special attention to the cultural subtleties particular to each one and the people who speak it.
A Research-Based Guide
By OEner OEzcelik, Amber Kennedy Kent
Many teachers of less commonly taught languages, or LCTLs, find themselves in the position of needing access to quality language teaching and learning materials where none exist, or where those that do are extremely outdated. This text is a concise guide for language instructors or anyone with an interest in developing language learning materials. While leading instructors through the development process using the ADDIE model of instructional design (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), OEzcelik and Kent present examples from many different languages, provide reflection questions for readers to consider at the end of each chapter, and give concrete strategies and tips throughout the process.
By David W. Lightfoot, Jonathan Havenhill
This edited volume, based on papers presented at the 2017 Georgetown University Round Table on Language and Linguistics (GURT), approaches the study of language variation from a variety of angles. Language variation research asks broad questions such as, "Why are languages' grammatical structures different from one another?" as well as more specific word-level questions such as, "Why are words that are pronounced differently still recognized to be the same words?" Too often, research on variation has been siloed based on the particular question-sociolinguists do not talk to historical linguists, who do not talk to phoneticians, and so on.
