An amphitheatre where animals were dissected, a sand dune hidden in a town centre, the oldest forgotten remains of the Berlin Wall in Pankow, the outstanding interior of an Expressionist church, a building which is a copy of the Farnese Palace in Rome, the remains of a camp for those in transit between the West and East, a concrete construction weighing 12,000 tonnes built to measure the solidity of the ground, a shining performance in the chapel of a cemetery, an unknown masterpiece of brutalist architecture, the man-made hill where the aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal did his first test flights, a street that closes from 10pm to 6am to protect beavers …
Far from the madding crowds and the usual clichés, Berlin remains full of hidden treasures that can only be seen by locals and travellers who bother to wander off the beaten track.
An essential guide for those who thought they knew Berlin, or for those who wish to discover the city’s other side.
After earning his PhD in philosophy, Tom Wolf decided to dedicate himself to writing. He has written 22 crime novels, 3 guides inviting travelers to take a fresh look on the places they visit, and a guide on wines produced in the region of Brandenburg. After spending 12 years in Berlin-Mitte and Kreuzberg, he now lives in the north of the Berlin/Brandenburg metropolitan region where he looks after his vineyard and his small craft brewery. But that story is for another time ...
Manuel Roy had been a Germanophile for many years when he discovered Berlin like a punch in the face. He had seen Germany through the verses of Schiller and the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, and found himself in a post-apocalyptic landscape full of punks scrupulously respectful of the selective sorting of rubbish. He admits to not having understood everything straight away. Twenty years of research later, with a doctorate in philosophy under his belt, having been a Berliner by adoption since 2000, and a guide in Berlin since 2013, Manuel now thinks that he has a better grasp of the city. But amazement is never far away. Despite its recent gentrification, the city never ceases to shake him up and surprise him. And it would seem that he loves that.
Born in 1986, Roberto Sassi is an urban sociologist. With Teresa Ciuffoletti, he is the author of the book Guida alla Berlino ribelle (Voland Edizioni, 2017) (Guide to rebellious Berlin, not yet translated). He regularly organises travel writing workshops and works with several journals, magazines among which the journal of the Goethe-Institut Italia, and websites. He lives in Prenzlauer Berg.

Rachel Howard is a journalist and copywriter who has lived in almost every borough in London. A regular contributor to Conde Nast Traveller, National Geographic Traveler, and The Guardian, Rachel writes mainly about travel, food, and the arts. She previously spent a decade writing speeches for the Greek foreign minister. But that’s another story.
Bill Nash is an actor and writer, with family roots all across London. An obsession with the city’s corners is the foundation for his contribution to this book. He lives in Brixton with his family and an ineffective cat.
‘The best guide to alternative London ever. An essential purchase.’ (The Londonist.com)
‘A fascinating London guidebook. Simply brilliant.’ (The travel editor.com)
‘The most interesting guidebook I have had the chance to pick up in years.’ (Globalista)
‘An insider’s look at some of London’s best-kept little secrets.’ (MSN Travel)
‘A wonderful book.’ (Glen Baxter)
‘Travel Guide of the Year’ at the Prague Book Fair
Where can you find monsters in Trafalgar Square? Whatever happened to Bedlam? Where can you praise God, buy meatballs and have a sauna? What’s in the House of Dreams? To which secret society does Prince Charles belong? What’s the trick to instant weight loss? Secret London, An Unusual Guide is the original and still the best of all the many alternative London guides: accept no imitation.
Authors Rachel Howard and Bill Nash have prowled the city streets, seeking out the hidden, eccentric and overlooked. Now the definitive insider’s guide to London has been fully updated, with over 40 new entries and a brand new look.
Far from the crowds and the usual clichés, London still reserves any number of hidden treasures for those who know how to wander off the beaten track.

Born and educated in Liverpool, Mike Keating continues to live in the city centre, where he maintains a keen interest in the local heritage and its history. He is a retired university lecturer and writer with a short acting and directing career at the Unity Theatre and an even shorter one as a cartoonist on the Liverpool Echo. This is his first guide-book which also marks his debut in the world of photographic illustration.
Discover for yourself the haunts of slave traders, privateers and press-gangs, the hideaway of a suspected assassin and the desecrated grave of a self-professed Jack the Ripper. Track down the birthplace of rail travel and Britain’s earliest mosque. Marvel at a life-size replica of the world’s first submarine and the original home of the Epsom Derby. Be gobsmacked by burial stones older than Stonehenge and one of the earliest human settlements to be found anywhere in the UK. Grimace at a set of heroic dentures all the way from the battlefields of Waterloo and snigger at the sight of Queen Victoria’s dildo. Meet trees that talk, World War II’s best-kept secret and the world’s first (and smallest) skyscraper. Toast the UK’s greatest female athlete in a brew named in her honour or go for a spin on the only purpose-built F1 race track in the country …
For tourists and locals who have outgrown Hop on–Hop off bus excursions, river cruises and Beatles tours, Secret Liverpool - An unusual guide is an indispensable guide to the curiosities of “England’s finest Victorian city”, designed for people who prefer to customise their own itinerary or simply wander where the mood takes them
The ‘Soul of’ collection is a new approach to the art of travelling that consists of vagabonding around, chance encounters, and unforgettable experiences. Guides for those who want to unlock the hidden doors of a city, feel out its heartbeat, plumb every last nook and cranny to uncover its soul.

Relics of the Soviet conquest of space, Moscow Pioneer camps, remnants of propaganda along a journey sparsely dotted with statues of Stalin or Lenin, from traditional Moldovan houses to ghosts of the Caucasian wars, by way of petrochemical factories in the Donbass ... this report invites the reader to relive, through its striking pictures, more than a hundred years of history, from the beginnings of the Soviet period to the legacy of a communist era now fast fading from memory.
Terence Abela has spent nine years travelling across the former USSR unearthing fragments from its past. His love of history, of photographing relics of the past and discovering the unknown, have combined to create this work. Driven by a desire to preserve the heritage abandoned by states that lurch between the threat of nationalism, dictatorship, wars and the will to invent a new history for themselves, he appeals to us through his pictures to protect these mementos which are at risk of disappearing in the not too distant future.

During March, April and May 2020, after the coronavirus outbreak, Venice was in lockdown and totally deserted for probably the first time in its history. Luc and Danielle Carton, who have lived in Venice since 2005, were lucky enough to be able to photograph the most beautiful city in the world in such exceptional circumstances.
Their photos are a rare testimony of this extraordinary time.
A unique report.

Between 2012 and 2019 Francis Meslet photographed several hundred places of worship across Europe. Over time, these places have became enveloped in silence, the only thing heard there now an occasional gust of wind whistling though broken stained glass, or the rhythmic drip of water leaking through the dilapidated roof above a nave. Nevertheless, these muted places still draw an occasional visitor. Once upon a time, prayers could be heard recited in Latin in a German church; and in a French Catholic college, the voices of children once resounded to the sound of the bells. But who can imagine what sounds might be concealed behind the walls of a crypt in the heart of the Italian mountains, or within a tomb in a former convent in Portugal?
In his spare time Francis travels the world in search of places that have fallen into disuse – religious buildings where time has stood still since their doors were closed for the last time. He returns with incredible photographs, each a time capsule, a record of a parallel universe. They prompt us to let our imaginations wander and ask ourselves questions. With the greatest respect for the faithful who regularly visited them long ago, he offers us an opportunity to immerse ourselves in places that have been abandoned by faith, to seek a divine light.

The Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan was created by the Soviets in the 1950s. It was from Baikonur in 1988 that the first Soviet spaceplane, Buran, was launched in response to the United States Space Shuttle.
The Buran programme officially ended in 1993 during the presidency of Boris Yeltsin, with only that initial launch to its name. Thereafter, much of the Baikonur Cosmodrome fell into disuse, notably the sites connected with the launch of these Soviet craft. Two completed shuttles remain abandoned there, laid to rest in this atmospheric place.
This is the first time that photographs of these spectacular locations have been published in a book. Under cover of night, Jonk travelled 20 kilometres through the Kazakh desert, crept into the hangars, and spent three nights hiding from military security, to produce a truly incredible reportage of what is considered today the world’s most important urban exploration site.
Discover the unbounded curiosities of our planet with these unusual atlases on offbeat topics.

A country that does not really exist, an island which is Spanish for six months of the year and French for the other six, a hotel room whose bedroom is in France and whose bathroom is in Switzerland, one of the very few territories on earth not claimed by any country, the only place in the world where in a 20-minute walk around the town you can cross an international border at least 30 times at 30 different points, a Norwegian territory whose natural resources any country can exploit, a railway in Germany that belongs to Belgium, a surprising Italian exclave in the heart of Switzerland, the world’s only private organisation with country status, a semi-independent theocratic state where women and female animals are banned, a means of crossing Russia from Finland or Estonia without a visa, a London hotel room that became part of Yugoslavia for a day so that Crown Prince Alexander could be born in his own country, a city consisting of a 14-storey skyscraper, the longest street in the world, an American peninsula only accessible via Canada and an Austrian valley only accessible from Germany … The world is full of little-known geographical anomalies, sometimes the source of diplomatic friction but always of wonderment.
