By Luciano Wernicke
Lionel Messi is often called the best player of all time. He holds 46 titles, including one World Cup and four European Champion League titles and eight Ballon d'Ors, the highest individual honour in soccer.
In 2024, he won Major League Soccer's MVP award. But who is the player behind these impressive stats? What makes Lionel Messi so great?
This book takes a deep dive into Messi's background, examining his beginnings, his struggles to reach the top, and even his thoughts on his soccer career.
With Messi's arrival to Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2023, the most popular sport in the world experienced a revolution in the US.
More stars from Europe, South America, and Africa followed, and the matches were soon televised on more channels and platforms than ever before.
The explosive success of MLS motivated Time magazine to name Messi the greatest sports figure of 2023.
To fully understand how Messi influenced MLS, this book takes a dynamic and in-depth look into his playing history-his beginnings, his career successes, his own personal stories, as well as what other players think of Messi's career.
Author Bio:
Luciano Wernicke was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He holds a degree in Journalism from the University of Salvador, and he is a professor of Sport History and Soccer History at the Instituto Universitario River Plate. In 2019, Luciano was the assistant to the Costa Rica National Soccer team manager. He has written 25 books on soccer, including Unforgettable Soccer and Why Is Soccer Played Eleven Against Eleven? and his books have been translated into several different languages.
This is the amazing story of how one of the world's greatest soccer players revolutionized MLS.

By Chris Sullivan and Stephen Colegrave
The last word on the movement that shook the world.
Punk: The Last Word is a powerful reimagining of punk-not just as a sound or style, but as a radical, DIY philosophy rooted in defiance, truth, and individuality.
Cultural insider and Wag Club founder Chris Sullivan and Byline Times editor Stephen Colegrave brings together over 150 original interviews with punks most iconic figures-Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Siouxsie Sioux, Vivienne Westwood, and many others.
From musicians and designers to promoters and provocateurs, they paint a vivid portrait of the movements chaotic rise and lasting impact on both sides of the Atlantic.
Tracing punks’ rebellious spirit from 19th-century bohemia to the explosion of Kings Road and Coventry in the late 70s, this is, without a doubt, the most in-depth, insider account of punk’s evolution and legacy.
As the movement approaches its 50th anniversary, its core values-authenticity, resistance, and creative freedom-feel more urgent than ever.
Author Bio:
Chris Sullivan has been a key figure in underground style and music since the early 1970s. At 18, he pioneered the UK's first warehouse parties while studying at St Martins. He founded The Wag Club in Soho, which he ran from 1982 to 2001, and fronted the Latin punk funk band Blue Rondo a La Turk, who sold over a million records and toured worldwide. As a journalist, he was GQ style editor and contributed to outlets like The Times, The Guardian, and Italian Vogue. He's also an author of books such as Punk: A Life Apart and Rebel Rebel: How Mavericks Made the Modern World.
Stephen Colegrave is co-founder and executive editor of Byline Times and writes articles on popular culture. He curated the John Lennon section of the Beatles Story Museum in Liverpool. He cowrote Inside Music (Random House, 2004), Punk: A Life Apart (Cassell, 2000) and helped Leee Black Childers with his autobiography. Previously, Stephen has produced feature films and documentaries, been EMEA marketing director of Saatchi & Saatchi and curated music festivals.
Punk isn’t just music. It’s a way of life.

Rust Programming in easy steps introduces all the features of the Rust programming language, using worked example programs.
Rust is still an immature language and sees a major release every six years.
The language differences are slight. Of greater concern is the library of "crates" that support more advanced features. Many of these are either not in place or not stable enough to be relied on. In particular, no one crate has emerged that provides a desktop GUI interface.
Therefore, all the examples in this book will be for commandline, text-based programs. The book includes two full example programs taken from areas where Rust has seen significant use: web back-end and embedded development. The latter requires that the reader obtain an Arduino and a few electronic components.
This optional project need not cost more than around GBP10. Rust Programming in easy steps is intended for experienced programmers and is not suitable for beginners.

The Uncharted History of Soccer (800-1800 AD)
By Brendan Murphy
This is a time travellers guide to the history of soccer, tracing its origins from a humble beginning to an established sport beloved worldwide. It is a story that spans five thousand years, from ancient Egypt to MesoAmerica, from the Greek Empire to Chinese Dynasties, and from the Roman Empire to medieval Britain.
From the Middle Ages onwards, Britain and Ireland unfurl their lineage, from the lesser-known trapball and stoolball to the lamentably extinct camping and knappan.
All forms find a voice in this book, as do hockey and hurling, baseball and bowling, tennis and golf. Primarily a narrative of British and Irish ball games, esteemed foreigners are welcomed: baggataway, knattleikur, soule, kolven, calcio. Many games come to life, revealing their motivations, and their complex inner world. Still, soccer is firmly center stage. This is, after all, its picaresque journey.
As the games sweep across history, the social, religious, and political contexts are threaded throughout, and this book is peppered with news snippets, anecdotes, comedy, and intrigue. Crammed with eccentric sports ephemera, untold tales, and unearthed facts, The Game That Would Be King is the most comprehensive work on the early history of ball games ever written.

From YouTube's popular Rigging Doctor channel, The Rigging Handbook is an introductory to mid-level book intended for boat owners, sailors, and cruisers who want to better understand how the mast and sails work.
Part I covers the function of rigging on a sailboat and a general overview of common rig designs-with a focus on single-masted sloops and cutters, and two-masted ketches, yawls, and schooners-as well as the slight nuances between them. Chapters then progress to introducing the parts of standing rigging (the parts that hold the mast up) and running rigging (parts that hold the sails); the function of each piece; and a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of all rigging materials, including hemp, galvanized steel, stainless steel, titanium and aluminum, and Dyneema (synthetic). Part II discusses how to evaluate, tune, repair, and replace rigging. Chapters cover in detail what happens when rigging parts fail or reach the end of their serviceable life-including from corrosion, cracks, and UV damage-how to perform a rig survey, and considerations for the wear and tear that happens with time, distance, and use and abuse.
The final chapters discuss the basics of replacing standing and running rigging-including set up and tuning-and the advantages of steel versus synthetic, and polyester versus more modern fibres, enabling the reader to make an informed decision as to what grade of equipment they wish to use to outfit their boat.

Reconceives whale songs as a sophisticated sonar system, revealing incredible insights into these creatures’ intelligence and behavior. With breathtaking complexity and haunting beauty, the songs of whales have long fascinated scientists. Whales are the only mammals that can sing continuously for ten hours or more, changing the unique songs they sing every year.
In Why Whales Sing, bio acoustician and cognitive scientist Eduardo Mercado transforms our understanding of these enigmatic sounds and proposes a groundbreaking theory that challenges decades of established science.
Fifty years of field research have led most scientists to conclude that humpback whales sing for the same reason that birds do: to advertise their sexual fitness. But if whale songs are nothing more than tools of attraction, why do whales sing even when they’re alone and there are no listeners nearby?
Author Bio:
Eduardo Mercado III is a professor of psychology at the University of Buffalo, SUNY, and a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow. He is the author of Principles of Cognition: Finding Minds, and coauthor of Learning and Memory: From Brain to Behavior.
Considering modern advances in neuroscience and ocean acoustics, Mercado reaches the surprising conclusion that whales may not actually be "singing," but rather engaging in an activity more commonly associated with dolphins and bats echolocating which enables them to see their world with sound. By incessantly streaming sounds while listening closely to the returning echoes, whales may be actively tuning their brains in ways that allow them to monitor the movements of silent whales located miles away.
Sophisticated, long-range sonar can enable whales to perceive their vast underwater worlds in unimaginable ways. From the military origins of whale song recordings to the persistent mysteries of cetacean communication, this book displays the wonder of whales and reshapes how we view their intelligence, behavior, and acoustic mastery.

By Joel J Miller
Books are our first and most lasting form of information technology. Books preserve ideas, yes, but they also provoke new ones— they are true tools for thinking. In The Idea Machine, Joel J. Miller shows that books are one of the most important but overlooked factors in the making of our contemporary world. And they still have lessons to teach us.
Polls indicate reading is on the decline, but as we deal with concerns about artificial intelligence and social and political division, the history of the book offers a path of understanding and patterns for engagement. They can even help us navigate what’s coming next.
Starting with the surge of book culture in ancient Athens and then moving through the centuries, from monks and militaries to rebellions and the Renaissance, and even to more modernday implications of books as tools of liberation and the novel’s impact on our humanity, Miller highlights the features and functions that make books indispensable to cultural evolution.
Subject to its own periods of technological upheaval and social unrest, the history of the book can point us away from failed past responses and toward more fruitful adaptations that will benefit us all. The Idea Machine reframes the history of the book as the eye-opening story of humanity’s first mobile information device. Books do more than record thinking; they serve as tools to facilitate it.

By Tim Bowden, Rod Ledingham
In the summer of 1967-68 Rod Ledingham was on a mapping high on the Antarctic plateau, driving a sledge dog team. He had been flown in by a light aircraft to take over the other dog team, but after their field work had ended, the aircraft crashed on take-off, fortunately with no casualties to the men or dogs. With no replacement aircraft available, and communications basic to say the least, the pilot and his two passengers had to use the sledge dogs to sledge 200 km along the plateau and down a glacier which had only been travelled once before to a small hut at Fossil Bluff on the coast, where two other BAS personnel were waiting to be flown out. So began a year of basic survival, with five men in a hut designed for four, minimal fuel for heating, no extra clothing and barely enough food. Fully illustrated in colour throughout.

Art has the capacity to speak to us across time and space.
In these eleven letters the writer sets out to reply.
Some of the artists she addresses lived long ago and far away, others overlapped her own lifetime and experience.
Remembering encounters with their work, her unguarded thoughts lead her back through childhood in Melbourne, art training in the Northern Territory, research trips to Europe, Japan and Mexico and arts practice in Tasmania.
The letters, which began as an exercise, become a valuable means of self-reflection and creative development.

His call sign said it all: Sudden Death.
It didn’t take George Uhl long into his tour to learn that in Vietnam death could be lurking behind the next tree, in the next rice paddy, on the next patrol, on his very next step down a damp jungle path.
From April 1966 to May 1967, the Marine radioman was in the thick of things, and in this unforgettable memoir, he vividly describes his tour in Southeast Asia, recounting the sleepless nights, the scorching days, and the terrifying minutes that seemed like days, and remembering the thoughts and fears of a young man fighting a war and trying to stay alive thousands of miles from home.

By Daniel E Long
From Napoleon to nuclear war, War Is Hell unravels the brutal rise of total war and its devastating impact on soldiers and civilians alike. General William Tecumseh Sherman said it best during the American Civil War: "War is hell" - for soldiers as well as for civilians. As a pioneer and practitioner of total war, Sherman knew better than most what warfare had become by the middle of the nineteenth century, how it had become a devastating, all-consuming affair that aimed not only at armies, but also at societies and economies to undermine a country's will to fight.
Indeed, this is the central story of warfare during the past two hundred years, from Napoleon's massive armies tearing through Europe and Sherman's march through Georgia to the firebombings of World War II and the threat of nuclear annihilation. In War Is Hell, Daniel Long tracks the rise of total war across two centuries of bloody warfare and pays special attention to the impact on civilians as they become more deeply enmeshed in armed conflict and as war becomes ever more lethal.
It is the story of Napoleon and Sherman, the Indian Wars on the American Plains, the Rape of Belgium in World War I and the Rape of Nanking in 1937, and the bombings of Japanese and German cities during World War II. Vietnam, Cambodia, the Iran-Iraq War, Bosnia and Kosovo, Rwanda, and Ukraine remind us that warfare remains total, the human cost high. War Is Hell is essential reading for understanding the past as well as a present.

A Day-By-Day Account of the First 60 Days of Abraham Lincoln's Presidency
By David Alan Johnson
Follow Lincoln's day-by-day path from peacemaker to war leader as the Union edges toward Civil War. The months after the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, between March 4 and May 3, 1861, mark one of the most significant periods in American history. Antagonism between the North and South, which had been intensifying since Lincoln's election as president in November 1860, only worsened when the president-elect was sworn into office. Lincoln's Road to War is a day-by-day account unpacking each day's events, both personal and political, from Lincoln's inauguration through the attack on Fort Sumter and towards the march to the Battle of Bull Run/Manassas.

By James Bulgin, Toby Haggith
The devastation caused by the Nazi regime during the Second World War was vast and multifaceted, leaving a profound and lasting impact on the world. In response, the Allies brought the leading civilian and military representatives of wartime Germany and Japan to trial on charges of war crimes, crimes against peace and crimes against humanity. The Nuremberg trials went on to become arguably the most famous trials in history, bringing some measure of justice to the millions persecuted and devastated by the Nazi regime. Drawing on documents, witness testimony and visual material from IWMs collections, this publication captures the importance and complexity of the trials that attempted to bring the Nazi war criminals to justice.

Introduce children to the sounds and sensations of the wind, and to the importance of togetherness
In Wind Whirls, two young children, guided by an adult, take an early winter walk through a city neighbourhood, bracing against the wind as they make their way to their grandparents' home. The sounds of the wind surround them-whoosh, rustle, bang, flap-flap-flap. The wind brings sensation too. Cousins Kamali and Josiah feel their scarves dancing around their necks and the force of the wind pushing them along. They learn that, together, they can stand stronger and find their way through any weather. Wind Whirls: Engages young children in reflecting on the natural world and togetherness Includes discussion ideas and activities to help children learn more about nature and their own senses Shows children that they can connect with nature and its lessons, no matter where they live Highlights children in diverse urban environments. This book is part of the Outside Our Window Board Books series, which encourages childrenespecially those in urban environments-to explore, protect, and delight in nature. Each book in the series focuses on one feature of the natural world (like wind), one sense (hearing), and one communication or relationship skill (togetherness). The books emphasize community and encourage children and families to explore the natural world around them.

When an old ally pleads for her return to the city of Ewele — the city she swore she’d never go back to — Issanka is torn.

A Therapeutic Story with Creative Activities About Trauma and Dissociation for Children Aged 5-10, with Advice for Adults
By Dr. Karen Treisman, Sarah Peacock
In the lush green Ethiopian mountains lives a tortoise called Taya, who loves basking in the sun and going to Baobab school to play with all her animal friends. But Taya has lived through some painful things. She copes and protects herself by retreating, disconnecting and going inwards. She keeps her feelings locked away, she finds it hard to share with others or to let them in-and this makes her feel even sadder and more alone than ever! How can Taya's friends and family help?
Taya the Tortoise is a much -needed activity workbook and therapeutic story written by award winning clinical psychologist, Dr Karen Treisman. We are used to identifying children who ask for attention, but what about children who need help, but stay silent or show their pain differently? They may survive by disconnecting, retreating, dissociating and internalising their hurt. These children are often overlooked, quieter, and misunderstood and therefore fall through the net.
This activity book is a professional tool to help these children and the adults supporting them. Combining trauma informed theory with practical and creative activities and worksheets, and a final section for adults supporting children, this activity book will help you to support children aged 5-10 to step out of their shells and into a brighter, more connected future.

"What aaaaarrrrrrrrrreeeeeee you?!"
If you just had that familiar sinking feeling, this book is for you.
Do you point out how alienating and othering that question is?
Stand your ground and explain that you don't have to justify your existence with a pie chart and a family tree?
Or keep the peace, bite your tongue and smile politely at yet another person treating you like a science project?
While each mixed person's experience is different, there are common threads from living in a monoracial world that weave their way into your life.
This book explores ways for mixed and multiracial people to recognise how their identity has shaped their life, handle common challenges, and resist othering and erasure.
Informed by experience and expertise from both sides of the therapist's couch, the Mixed + Multiracial Guide to Wellbeing shows you how to handle microaggressions, confront systemic issues, and control your own story.
