What if someone had dropped a hammer on the little ceramic creation and smashed The Ashes urn at Lord’s in the late 1960s? Could it have happened? It was certainly talked about.
Author Bio:
Mark Browning has been a cricket writer for forty years. He has had five books published and has written features for every Australian and English cricket periodical you care to think of, surviving and defunct. He lives in Geelong with his wonderful long-suffering wife, Chris, who fortunately for the relationship is also a fan of Ashes Test cricket.
This wonderful and rich contest that began in 1877 is bigger and better today than ever. But in the 1960s as hair grew longer, skirts shortened and pop music blossomed, it was totally ‘uncool’.
Yet this was entry-level Ashes cricket to passionate Test cricket fan and author Mark Browning. Growing up in the Victorian regional city of Geelong in the 1960s, he embraced The Ashes and its players when it was at its lowest ebb and then rejoiced at its renaissance in 1972, cementing a relationship that endures with undimmed passion and admiration more than half a century later.
This is The Ashes: A Coming of Age Memoir.

An essential guide to the strange, sinister culture of contemporary Russia.

This eminently readable book shows how we need to look at the Kremlin's deeds and ignore their words to get a handle on the most disruptive country of the 21st century.
Jonathan Fink is a Russia expert who read Russian history and language at the University of Edinburgh and started popular YouTube Channel Silicon Curtain interviewing hour long interviews on Russia with a wide variety of guests, from Donald Trump's Russia advisor Fiona Hill to Ukrainian citizens living in Ukraine's 30-mile border fringe subjected to Russian terror.

On February 20, 2004, Brian Wilson walked onstage at London's Royal Festival Hall to unveil his long-delayed masterpiece - the Holy Grail of Rock - Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE. It was a night that that exceeded all expectations.
SMiLE: The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of Brian Wilson is an oral history of that journey, music's creation, near-death, and rebirth. It looks closely at the events of 1966-1967 and 20032004, as well as including an anthology of brand-new essays about SMiLE, combining to provide a 'fly on the wall' account of events leading up to that fateful night. That instantly legendary performance in 2004 in turn led to the recording of Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE, a worldwide tour, and the rebirth of an artistic soul.
Drawing upon the author's in-depth interviews with Brian, his collaborator Van Dyke Parks, Brian's band (especially Darian Sahanaja), close friends, family, and so many others who were part of the trip, David Leaf tells how Brian Wilson rose to greatness, almost fell off the edge of the earth, then unexpectedly came back to reclaim his place as one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. There are two Beach Boys narratives. One is about a family band and their greatest hits, an amazing body of work the group primarily recorded between 1962 and 1966. Those records, composed, arranged and produced by Brian Wilson, have brought joy to the world for over six decades. This book is the other story. SMiLE is the story of a genius revealed.

A Selection from the W.H. Chignell Collection
By James P. Carley, Katharine E. Hutchison
Living in a time of instant access through electronic communication, it is hard to remember the importance of letters in the past. For those with family living abroad, the post office was a lifeline. Normally the envelope had no more than an address but for some few individuals there was more involved. The hundreds of envelopes executed by W.H. Chignell (1841-1933), never published, excel in this eld: indeed they are artistic endeavours. Chignell began married life as an organist and choir master rather than a professional artist. He was the father of seven children and after the break-up of the family home, several emigrated abroad and others moved to disparate parts of the UK. They kept diaries, wrote journals or in one case published a book on life in Papua New Guinea.

With contributions from leading voices in the artist blacksmith community, it provides an overview from Evans roots in the Cotswold Arts and Crafts movement to exciting developments in the craft since 1980 as makers and educators stepped up to the challenges and positives of blacksmithing and began to engage in constructive thinking about ways of tackling environmental issues and climate change. This is the incredible story of why and how Winston Churchill in his mid-50s decided to write an autobiography designed to reshape his image and to reduce an overwhelming personal debt burden. The book, My Early Life, emerged from a truly Churchillian writing process that was both complicated and highly focused. An extensive dictation process using both external research and his own previously written materials created a rough draft. Then additional researchers, reviewers and publishers on two continents helped mold the final product. My Early Life is Churchill's Aeneid and many sections approach lyric poetry in the style of writing and in its visual and emotional impact. How all this came about is described and analysed in this book.

While Le Roux excels in his professional life, his personal relationships are chaotic. The biography unveils the complexities of a talented man whose life was tumultuous as it was remarkable. How it felt then, Why it matters now
By Jamie Camplin
Writers and poets, academics and art critics, mathematicians and experimental scientists, churchmen and politicians, women of strong opinions gather for a summer weekend in the 1870s. Is it real, or is it a fantasy? One thing's sure: their debates - about life's aims, rural and urban living, love and money, civilization and belief, the social framework, the past, the present and the future take us to the heart of the Victorian dream and its reality: the idea that their society exemplified 'Progress'. What did 'Progress' mean? Were things (and which things) getting better? What did 'better' mean? And for whom? The history of the world before the Victorians, from Aberdeen to Africa, showed a particular form of equality for almost everyone: an equality of poverty and no prospects, with kindness often in short supply.

By Dr. Kathryn Gutteridge
Sheena Byrom in her foreword Trauma-informed maternity care is essential for women who are survivors of childhood abuse. Pregnancy and birth can bring up long-suppressed memories and feelings that have implications for women's health and wellbeing as they become mothers. Welcoming a new baby into the family can challenge relationships and distort emotions following birth, affecting partners and bonding with their baby. Kathryn Gutteridge has spent her career as a midwife advocating for the needs of survivor women in maternity care, and this book is the result of that work. She explains how and why the needs of survivors must be considered and shows that trauma-informed care can transform the experiences of women.

Unlike other sports, cricket - and especially the club cricket of England and the British Isles - allows recreational players to rub shoulders with international stars and even superstars in a fully competitive context, providing them with some of the most cherished memories of their lives. As in the first book, Scott Oliver has assembled two stellar XIs including legendary figures such as Muttiah Muralitharan, Dennis Lillee, Lance Gibbs, Abdul Qadir, Allan Border, Learie Constantine, Javed Miandad and many more, cult heroes such as Jesse Ryder, and even the club cricket story of one of England's earliest greats, SF Barnes. These magical stories are unique to cricket. And yet no one has collected them in one place. Until now. The first volume of Sticky Dogs and Stardust was named the Wisden Book of the Year in 2024, also earning Oliver the title of JM Kilburn Cricket Writer of the Year and nominations for the Cricket Society and MCC Book of the Year 2024, and the Sports Book Awards 2024. Surviving cricket, depression and the greatest ever Ashes
By Ashley Giles
Ashley Giles has been at the heart of some of English cricket’s biggest moments this century and will forever be remembered for the pivotal role he played in the greatest Ashes ever played. Documenting how the game roused itself in 2005, Giles brings an astute eye to the madness of an unforgettable summer, offering the inside track on a series that would irrevocably change the course of English cricket. But Giles’ story is about much more than Ashes glory. Based on personal writings stretching back to his early days as a rookie at Warwickshire, this is a deeply intimate account of a sportsman on the edge, one who survived the enemies of self-doubt, imposter syndrome and depression to first establish himself in the professional game and then – against the odds – become a constant presence in the dressing rooms of Pietersen, Flintoff, Vaughan and Hussain.

England in Australia: The 1974-75 Ashes
By David Tossell
Blood on the Tracks tells the thrilling and brutal story of the 1974/75 Ashes series. Led by tearaway speedsters Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson, the Australian bowling attack terrorised the tourists during the six-match series – by the end of the first Test, two English batsmen had suffered broken bones. Nearly 50 years after Dylan’s generosity, David Tossell’s book offers a gripping and forensic account of this uniquely frightening and wince-inducing Australian summer and the indelible mark it left on cricket.

The Evolution has Begun How bots, agents and autonomous buyers are changing everything
By Katja Forbes
In Machine Customers: The Evolution Has Begun, CX Evolutionist, Katja Forbes, reveals how intelligent agents, autonomous procurement systems, and logic-driven buying platforms are silently revolutionising commerce. This trilliondollar transformation is happening now, not in some distant future.
The book transforms abstract concepts into Monday-morning implementation through original frameworks: the Machine Customer Experience Strategy Map, five Machine Customer types, and step-by-step guidance for redesigning customer journeys that win both human hearts and machine logic. Forbes shows leaders exactly how to make their businesses discoverable to AI agents, design machine-readable value propositions, navigate machine trust and ethics and build algorithmic loyalty systems that lock out competitors.
More importantly, she reveals how to excel in the hybrid reality where businesses must serve both emotional humans and logical machines simultaneously. The businesses that understand this evolution first will dominate their industries. Those that don’t will become irrelevant. Forbes ensures readers will be in the first category.

Wild Philippines explores the archipelago's wide range of habitats from tidal sand bars to mighty mountain ranges, from coral reefs through rainforests to summit grasslands.
The country's isolation from mainland Asia also gives it a high number of endemic plant and animal species. In this fully updated second edition, Nigel Hicks' stunning photographs and vivid text explores each of the natural environments and habitats.
He describes and illustrates species of the open seas, of the coral reefs and sandy shallows, and of the many different types of forests including the 37 species of mangrove tree found in the Philippines. He gives an overview of the protected areas that safeguard a cross-section of these vital environments and discusses the conservation issues past and present.
Wild Philippines provides an authoritative and entertaining study of the wide spectrum of wildlife on the land and in the seas of this diverse country.

"Fox opened the first page of a book. Mole settled cosily, spilling cookie crumbs everywhere. This was how it always was in autumn. 'The Legend of the Scuffling Monster,' read Fox. 'Once upon a time...'"
Fox and Mole live alone on a headland, in two houses, side by side. Mole is carefree and self-centred. Fox is responsible and self-sacrificing. As autumn draws in, the friends read a spooky story together (that Mole keeps interrupting) about a racoon who transforms into a scuffling monster (a slightly spooky bit) while Mole eats Fox's cookies (all of them).
Fox's anger with Mole's lack of consideration builds, and when Mole forgets Fox's birthday, Fox too begins to transform... Can Mole recognise what's wrong and fix things before it's too late?
This humorously hair-raising gothic tale, told in four chapters, is perfect for older picture book lovers to curl up with on long, dark evenings.

Some people say "Hey!" by using their words. They bellow loudly to greet you. But others say hi with only a smile to tell you they're so glad you're here. There are so many ways that people communicate! And we probably have different styles than lots of our family and friends. Some love to run up and talk to new people right away; some prefer to hang back and let others approach them. Some look people right in the eye, and some prefer to focus somewhere else. Some people love to shake hands or hug, and others may prefer not to touch. Every person is unique, and the ways we communicate are unique too. The way we talk to new people may be different from the way we talk to family and friends. Or maybe it even cha nges day to day! However, we communicate, it's all okay. You can say hi however you want! An uplifting and inclusive celebration of all the different ways that people might communicate, whether it's speaking, waving, signing, body language, device-assisted, or more.

Was all his hard work for nothing? Mama and all his neighbours help him to understand that he is surrounded by love. And what's more-he found a flock who will always support him. This is a story of found family and encouragement for any kid with a parent who may not be able to be fully present in their lives.
By Jane Yolen, Peter Tacy
On a crisp fall day, Gracie feeds the birds. She isn't sure if the day seems different to them. But it does to her. She puts the seeds in the first feeder. Then the second. She thanks the birds one by one. A patient woodpecker. A buoyant chickadee. A grumpy finch. Even an impatient squirrel, not waiting his turn, always demanding more, more, more! (And a dog in the house who does not think the squirrel should be thanked-but Gracie knows gratitude goes both ways.) She makes sure every one of them gets a share-and her thanks just for being there. From Jane Yolen and Peter Tacy comes a poetic, meditative look at how simple acts of gratitude and kindness can bring peace and joy to our day, even when the kindness isn't necessarily reciprocated. Gratitude can be found in giving as well as receiving. There is beauty in the small moments and something to be grateful for each day.
