One of the MOJO Books of the Year 2022 An intimate, coming-of-age memoir by legendary guitarist Kid Congo Powers, detailing his experiences as a young, queer Mexican American in 1970s Los Angeles through his rise in the glam rock and punk rock scenes. Kid Congo Powers has been described as a "legendary guitarist and paragon of cool" with "the greatest resume ever of anyone in rock music." That unique imprint on rock history stems from being a member of not one but three beloved, groundbreaking, and influential groups Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the Cramps, and last but not least, The Gun Club, the wildly inventive punk-blues band he co-founded. Some New Kind of Kick begins as an intimate coming of age tale, of a young, queer, Chicano kid, growing up in a suburb east of East LA, in the mid-70s, exploring his sexual identity through glam rock.

Television history was made on October 11, 1975, when Chevy Chase welcomed America to the first episode of a new late-night comedy and variety show. Featuring cutting-edge humour, an absurdist sensibility, and a scrappy cast of young, talented performers, Saturday Night Live would go on to become one of the brightest stars in the pop-culture firmament, launching such comedy legends as John Belushi, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Eddie Murphy, Phil Hartman, Will Ferrell, and Tina Fey. Timed to coincide with the show's Season 50 in fall 2024, Saturday Night Forever is the ultimate fan's bible and a loving tribute to a TV institution. Covering everything from the show's creation by Lorne Michaels to the celebration of its golden anniversary, it gives an in-depth look at SNL's comedic highlights and nadirs.

How the Cultural Crossover of Bob Marley, the Clash, the Specials and More Changed the Face of Rock Music
By Steven Blush
Bringing the same incisive, cross-genre perspective he offered in When Rock Met Disco, Steven Blush gives a spirited survey of the crossover of Jamaican, British, and American sounds that changed the face of popular music in When Rock Met Reggae. The inspiration of ska, rocksteady, dub, and reggae heard on independent recordings played on "soundsystems" from Kingston and Brixton created a new rock tonality and attitude, spanning from Eric Clapton to The Clash. Meanwhile, the "Two Tone" sounds traversing The Specials, Madness, and UB40 fuelled the '90s ska revival of Sublime, No Doubt, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and beyond. Attentive to the racial, political, and--ahem-pharmaceutical aspects of this intricate story, Blush gives a memorable account of one of the most fertile cross-pollinations in pop music history.

They’ve sold more than 20 million albums, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and they’re one of Homer Simpson’s favourite bands but even today, fifty years after they first formed, Cheap Trick remains to many a club band with a cult following. They certainly started out that way, with a carnival-like stage show featuring four perfectly mismatched characters: guitarist Rick Nielsen, in bowtie, sweater, and baseball cap, stood next to blonde dreamboat Robin Zander, while the mysterious, chestnut-haired bassist Tom Peterson held down the bottom end with drummer Bun E. Carlos, never seen without his cigarette or tie. American Standard: Cheap Trick from the Bars to the Budokan and Beyond tells the unlikely story of the band’s path to greatness, from their origins in Rockford, Illinois to their massively successful live album At Budokan to the many, many ups and downs that followed.
By Dave Mason, Chris Epting
Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason found early success with the band Traffic, establishing himself as a skilled guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter who penned the classic “Feelin’ Alright?”. Departing the band for a solo career, Mason earned three gold albums―Alone Together, Dave Mason, and Mariposa De Oro ― and a platinum album, Let it Flow, which included the hit single “We Just Disagree.” In addition to his prolific solo work, Dave has been a member of Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, the original lineup of Derek & The Dominoes, a duo with Mama Cass Elliott, an ill-fated version of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, and the legendary Fleetwood Mac.

Pressure Drop chronicles reggaes most tumultuous and influential decade. Beginning in 1970 and unfolding both in Britain and Jamaica, reggae flourished against a backdrop of political upheaval, gang warfare, Black Nationalism, racial and class discrimination and grinding poverty. The music that developed as rocksteady and early reggae gave birth to deejays, dub, rockers, lovers rock, early dancehall and 2 Tone was by turns brutal and revelatory. Including an extensive analysis of the decades major singles and albums, Pressure Drop includes eyewitness accounts and experiences of the decade from the likes of Burning Spear, Chris Blackwell, Gregory Isaacs, Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff, Black Uhuru, U-Roy, Lee Scratch Perry, Augustus Pablo, Toots and the Maytals, Desmond Dekker, Sly & Robbie, Dennis Bovell, Don Letts and members of the Specials, as well as first-hand anecdotes of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.

This beautifully illustrated book tells the incredible story of Dame Vivienne Westwood a British fashion designer largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream. Traditionalist, provocateur, utterly contemporary: Vivienne Westwood was one of British fashion's most famous - and most contradictory - designers. The woman who helped create punk clocked up over four decades on the cutting edge and produced some of modern style's most recognisable looks. Westwood came to worldwide attention when she made clothes for the boutique that she and Malcolm McLaren ran on King's Road, which became known as Sex.
Their ability to synthesize clothing and music shaped the 1970s UK punk scene, which included McLaren's band, the Sex Pistols. She viewed punk as a way of "seeing if one could put a spoke in the system" Westwood opened four shops in London and eventually expanded throughout Britain and the world, selling a varied range of merchandise, much of which would promote her passionate support for political causes such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Climate change and various important Civil Rights groups. This is her amazing story...

The Louis Vuitton label was founded by Vuitton in 1854 in Paris.
In 1858, Vuitton introduced his flat-topped trunks with Trianon canvas, making them lightweight and airtight. Louis Vuitton's graphic symbols, including quatrefoils and flowers (as well as the LV monogram), were based on the trend of using Japanese Mon designs in the late Victorian era.
The company is still known for its signature monogram bags today. Louis Vuitton has evolved into one of the world's most celebrated fashion houses - synonymous with classic design, elegance, luxury and quality.
Louis Vuitton - beloved by the great, the good and the uber glamorous - boasts an instantly recognisable signature style all of its own.
This book, beautifully illustrated with images of some of the world's iconic fashion items, charts the story of Louis Vuitton's origins and how the brand became the influential, innovative haute-couture power house it is today.

The manager who finally brought the Premier League title back to Anfield after 30 long years, Jürgen Klopp’s legendary status at Liverpool is assured. The German won seven major trophies on Merseyside between 2015 and 2024, and the rollercoaster ride he embarked on with the club was one full of undiluted drama, full throttle football and repeated scenes of joyous celebration. Klopp’s Liverpool became a byword for passion, pride and above all success and long before he bid his emotional farewell to the club, players and fans, his name was already in the same conversation as Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley and Kenny Dalglish whenever talk turned to the club’s greatest manager ever The German’s love for Liverpool was always mutual and he left a legacy on and off the pitch at Anfield that will endure the test of time. Relive the amazing Anfield journey of the honorary Scouser who made Liverpool great again.

Includes a new Foreword by golf pro Brad Faxon and a new Preface by editor Jeff Silverman! Bernard Darwin could have easily embraced a privileged life as a respected lawyer, given his conventional upbringing and prestigious lineage as the grandson of Charles Darwin. However, he veered off this path to pursue his true passion: golf. Despite his notable skills on the links having captained his golf team at Cambridge and reached the semifinals of the British Amateur Championships twice Darwin found greater acclaim with his pen than with his club Initially, Darwin served as a weekly columnist for The Times of London, always signing his columns "Our Golf Correspondent." He swiftly rose to prominence as one of Britain’s finest essayists, transcending the mere reporting of events to offer profound insights into the sport.

Overcoming Social Anxiety from Childhood to Adulthood
By Natasha Daniels
Look around you at all the people connecting and socializing. And you are just standing here alone, like a social reject, again. Nobody likes you.
Why would they want someone like you around?
For years, social anxiety whispered its way into Natasha Daniels' mind and quietly sabotaged her life.
Even while working as a therapist, helping children to cope with their own anxiety, insecurity lurked in the shadows pointing out the stares, the rejection, the vicious comments from online strangers.
In this memoir, Natasha takes on the therapist's role with her past selves to drag her social anxiety into the open.
From feisty Miss 6, lonely Miss 14 reeling from a tumultuous childhood, and defiant Miss 18 pushing back against a world where she didn't fit, through to her present self, Natasha explores the way social anxiety coloured her experiences and finds healing through self-acceptance.

Health Inequality, Trauma and Loss
By Yansie Rolston, Patrick Vernon
"When Black people mourn, it is not only for the passing of loved ones. As a community, Black people will also be mourning the systemic inequalities, racial prejudices and oppressions we experience daily."
The stories and poems in this anthology illuminate the unique ways loss affects the Black community, and the effects of the widespread lack of understanding of traditional rituals and beliefs. They show us how experiences of collective loss during the pandemic, the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire and ongoing systemic health inequalities are experienced not just as individuals but also as part of a global community. Contributors from a range of backgrounds, professions, and identities discuss the challenges of grieving under the shadow of continuing adversity, including threats of deportation. Sources of strength and healing are also explored, from personal and spiritual responses to community initiatives and activism.
Poignant and inspiring, these are stories we all need to read, and provide us with insights into lives and losses which are all too often misunderstood and sidelined.

By Anne Marie Pahuus
A brief but engaging look at love. In Love, researcher Anne Marie Pahuus explores the fascinating dimensions of this complicated and alluring feeling. Defining love as a mixture of warm emotions fuelled by our wish to be with another person, Pahuus illustrates how love frames and influences our eventful lives, plans, and goals. But we haven't always viewed love in the romantic way that we see it now the idea of love has changed and evolved throughout history, from Plato to Kierkegaard and Milan Kundera. Love determines our experience of happiness, but it also defines our responsibilities. Pahuus asks provocative questions: How do our attitudes toward love reinforce or subvert traditional ideas about gender, sexuality, and partnership?
By Gert Tinggaard Svendsen
A brief but engaging look at the importance of trust. Gert Tinggaard Svendsen explores how to cultivate this elusive feeling and why developing trust is so important for maintaining a happy, stable, and economically sound society. Without it, societies become more corrupt and legal systems cannot guarantee justice. Why do Nordic countries like Denmark score so highly in trust and happiness levels and so low in levels of corruption and how can other countries replicate these stats for the good of their people? Higher levels of trust often translate to more cooperation and social responsibility, advantages in economic growth and social stability, and happier workplaces. Tinggard Svendsen's research on trust emphasizes that if we want to build trust, we must minimize control.
By Daryl R. Van Tongeren
This book draws from cutting-edge psychological research to provide advice for people who are undergoing religious change. Americans today are leaving religion in record numbers. For many, the faith, practices, and institutions that once provided comfort and guidance no longer fit their beliefs and values. This shift often comes with a price, however. While turning away from religion can bring about freedom, awe, and wonder, it can also engender a profound loss of meaning, purpose, community, and identity. It can threaten our relationships with friends and family. And it can pose a significant challenge to the mental health of even the most resilient among us. How can people who are no longer served by traditional religion find new meaning and purpose? How can they process the grief that often accompanies religious or spiritual change?

What does science tell us about motivation? This book challenges common myths about motivation and offers readers strategies for successfully motivating themselves and others. Many unscientific and inaccurate ideas about motivation persist because they seem so logical, simple, or appealing. For example, we may say that someone is "unmotivated" and assume that this is just part of their personality, whereas in reality everyone is motivated and it's more likely that their inaction is related to their interests or to their environment. This book reveals the scientific truth about motivation. Readers will learn to identify and debunk ten persistent myths about motivation-for example, that visualizing success leads to success, that competition increases motivation for everyone, and that rewards are the best way to enhance motivation-and replace those myths with accurate knowledge. The Origins of Atheism in a Religious Species
By Will M. Gervais Ph. D
Does God exist? This straightforward question has spawned endless debate, ranging from apologists’ supposed proofs of God’s existence to New Atheist manifestos declaring belief in God a harmful delusion. In Disbelief, Will M. Gervais, PhD., a global leader in the psychological study of atheism, shows that the ubiquity of religious belief and the peculiarities of atheism are connected pieces in the puzzle of human nature. It’s undeniable that religion is a core tenet of human nature. It is also true that our overwhelmingly religious species is also as atheistic as it’s ever been. Yet, no scientific understanding of religion is complete without accounting for those who actively do not believe. In this refreshing and revelatory book, Gervais argues that religion is not an evolutionary puzzle so much as two evolutionary puzzles that can only be solved together.

A Return to Duty, the eighth volume in the award-winning Cutler Family Chronicles series, is set in Massachusetts and the Orient in the early 1850s during the aftermath of the First Opium War fought between China and Great Britain. The subsequent flood of opium into North America and Europe, from Turkey and the eastern provinces of India through China, threatens the very fabric of America. As a premier carrier of goods along Far Eastern trade routes, Cutler & Sons, in league with the U.S. Navy and the Royal Navy, plays a key role in the struggle to eliminate the scourge of narcotics. Family loyalties, core values, and passions are woven into a plot that takes the reader from Boston to Washington, and from Java to Hong Kong and the Gulf of Tonkin, in a savage conflict with cutthroats and brigands who defy their emperor to amass huge fortunes by ransoming sailors and smuggling opium.

When Lexi meets Travis, a charming cybercrime cop free from emotional baggage, her new life shapeshifts at a dizzying rate. Lexi becomes ensnared and, this time, no amount of lying can set her free.

Being born on the last day of the year has never done Eve Anderson any favours, but this year her birthday set off a series of rolling explosions rather than fireworks. An affair with a married man just crashed and burned, her career is in tatters, and now there's a phone call from her mother that she can't ignore. Eve is forced to slink back to the outback town she ditched at 18 and face the family she's actively ignored since, the teenage love she never forgot, and the pub (or is that "family home”? -you say potato, I say "po-taa-to"!) that holds too many of her secrets. Packed with heart, humour, and romance, get ready to fall in love with New Year's Eve.
By Gillian Wills
Beat is given a chance to shine when she is appointed dean of Turalong Music School, but her role is not what it seems. Fine tuning this institution is like playing a cracked violin with broken strings. She's determined to revive the school's reputation despite gender bias, staff conflict, fraud, betrayal, a famous composer's ghost and a predatory university. Beat loves the wild mashes of sound: trumpets, electric guitars, flutes and saxophones which blaze all day and night - indeed the book has its own soundtrack - but she's barely able to keep the school together, let alone her home life on her beloved hobby farm. Keen to unify her squabbling colleagues from opposite musical traditions, she puts a fresh spin on programming to show audiences something new: a combined Beethoven and rock festival. Music or politics? What will be her magnum opus?

Sisters Fin and George navigate their love/hate relationship growing up in a highly dysfunctional family. Their father Victor moves them to an isolated rural property outside Brisbane where his dreams to create an idyllic rural retreat crumble while his family tiptoe around his unpredictable moods. Fin leaves the moment she can and becomes a compassionate palliative care nurse, helping people to leave this world but unable to bring her own child into it. George has the opposite problem and turns to Fin whenever she runs into difficulties. When Fin, close to forty, falls in love with Anthony, her biological clock is ticking. Will she fulfill her dream of parenthood, or will her family needs once again prevail? Steinbauer family history was rewritten even while it was happening until it became difficult to recall which bits were fabricated or embellished.

Navigating the Challenges and Celebrating Your Child's Strengths
By Liliana J. Lengua, Maria Amy Gartstein
This book will help parents understand and work more effectively with their young child's temperament. Effective parenting isn't one-size-fits-all. Every child comes with an innate temperament, which includes a unique set of emotional reactions and personal strengths, a motivational style, and needs that demand attention. And every family has its own values and culture. While we cannot change our child's natural temperament (nor would we want to!), we can impact their selfregulation systems, nurture their positive behaviors, and promote healthy social and emotional development.
In this book, psychologists Liliana Lengua and Maria Gartstein offer readers science-based recommendations for parenting based on the individual temperament. In particular, they focus on a handful of temperament characteristics that, when very strong, can present challenges related to children's social, emotional, and behavioral development and well-being. These include being fearful, impulsive, inflexible, and easily frustrated. With its simple practical advice, relatable examples, and questionnaires to help you assess your child's temperament and your own parenting practices, this book gives you the tools you need to parent more effectively and strengthen your relationship with your child.
