Selecting and Balloting for an Activity
Throughout the school year, students are encouraged to choose Activities from at least three of the following categories: Academic Enrichment/Challenge; Leadership; Visual and Performing Arts; Sport and Physical Development; Health, Lifestyle and Practical Skills; Technology and ICT; and Community Partnerships.
Descriptions of each Activity are provided in the following pages. Please read the information carefully, noting any special requirements such as costs, equipment, or materials, and discuss your selections with your parents. If you require further details, contact the teacher responsible for the Activity or the Head of Activities, Mr Azzopardi.
When submitting your ballot, you should be willing to participate in any of your selected Activities. As you may be allocated to any one of your six choices, please consider your preferences carefully.
Students who do not complete the initial online ballot by 10:30am on February 24 will be required to complete a restricted online ballot. This may limit available options, and if most Activities are already full, a further restricted paper ballot may be necessary. Students who do not submit a ballot by the final deadline will be assigned to an Activity.
Additional Information
Activities that incur a cost

Some Activities may incur a cost where individual coaching or special equipment is required. Costs are shown within this pamphlet and will be charged to the term’s account. If your child undertakes an Activity where there is a cost, you will be notified and approval will be required.
Activities Leaving School Grounds


Some Activities may run during lunchtime, particularly those where students are leaving the school grounds. Students need to consider this when balloting and be aware that they may need to take and eat their lunch on the journey from school or back to school. It is recommended that students participating in SIS Sports or students that have other commitments (Yr 12 subject, Music etc) choose Activities that are on campus to avoid missing sessions that you may be charged for. Transport is via Budget Rosa Bus or Woodleigh HiAce Van driven by a Woodleigh Staff Member or via Driver Coastal Bus Lines.
Adventure-Based Activities

Some Activities are regarded as adventure-based. Being involved may have some higher elements of risk and the possibility of injury, both of a minor and serious nature. It is important that both students and parents are aware of this fact. It is also important that you have an understanding of the nature of the Activity, if you have any questions in regard to a specific Activity please contact the teacher in charge of the Activity or the Head of Activities, Mr Azzopardi. If a student undertakes an adventure-based Activity, approval may be required from a parent.
Appropriate, Sunsmart Clothing
In sporting Activities you will need your sports uniform and appropriate footwear. Students involved in outdoor Activities need to supply their own hat and sunscreen. Sunscreen is also available in each Homestead, the Sustainability Centre, with staff at outdoor venues and at the Gym in case you forget. Students must wear Activity appropriate clothing that is in line with the Woodleigh Dress Code.
Additional Health and Safety Information
The health and safety of all in our community remains foremost in our planning. We are establishing ongoing protocols to ensure the physical safety of our community. For this reason some of our Activities will be adapted to provide reasonable precautions and a safe learning environment over the Unit. All Activities will abide by Government regulations.






Year 11 Program and Certificates
The following Activities are deisgned to enable Year 11 students to gain a certification during Activity time. Students are also able to take advantage of other Activities on offer.
CPR and First Aid Certificate - Level 2 Y11


Ms Schmidt
During this Activity, students will gain the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life threatening emergencies using basic life support measures only. Key topics will include Aims of first aid, Responsibilities of the first aider, Duty of care, Asthma, Heart attack, Shock, Soft tissue injuries, Bleeding, Anaphylaxis, Spider bites, Snake bites and CPR. You will gain a Nationally Accredited certificate.

Food and Safety Handlers Certificate Y11

Most food serving establishments such as restaurants or bistros expect their staff to have undertaken some type of food safety training to ensure the safety of customers. This course provides the food safety basics to help increase students chances of gaining a job in these establishments. Course includes information on the following topics; Food spoilage and food poisoning, Cross contamination, Bacteria growth and the ‘Danger Zone’, Personal hygiene when dealing with food and handling of food in the kitchen, What to look for when accepting food from suppliers, Cleaning of food premises and safe storage of food items. The course will consist of theory sessions, a written test and a cooking session in the kitchen. Students will cook food and put into practice the safety lessons they learn in class. At the end of the course students will receive a Food Hygiene for Food Handlers Certificate of Participation, a recognised certificate.

During this course you will be instructed by an external provider to gain Liquor Licensing Victoria’s Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate. You will learn about the Liquor Industry, Benefits of Responsible Service, Facts about Alcohol, Strategies for Responsible Service and Refusal of Service.

Basic Aeronautical theory taught during this unit will depend on group needs. Practical flying lessons will be tailored to the individual.

The Da Vinci Decathlon provides extension across a variety of academic areas in an interesting and competitive way. Develop skills in the worlds of Code Breaking, Ideation (a form of philosophy) English, Mathematics, Science, General Knowledge, Art and Poetry, Creative Production and Engineering. The Activity culminates in an intense, interschool gala competition day. All the tasks are both exciting and challenging with particular emphasis placed on higher order thinking. Although a little daunting at the start, everyone who takes part finds this to be a truly rewarding experience. Ever wanted to know what you’re doing in Adobe instead of clicking around and hoping for the best? In this Activity, you’ll learn Media skills through clear, step-by-step tutorials that show you how to use Adobe tools properly. Then put those skills straight into action with fun, creative mini-tasks. Each session builds your confidence as you learn new tricks, shortcuts and workflows used by real media creators. You’ll explore graphics, video editing and sound using programs like Photoshop, Premiere Pro and Audition, working at your own pace and levelling up as you go. The focus is on learning skills, trying things out, and seeing quick wins in your Media work. This Activity is open to anyone in Yr 9–11 who enjoys creating, learning by doing, or wants their digital work to look sharper and more professional.

Art Club focus this unit will be making 1000 ceramic plates for a whole school art exhibition. We will prepare glazing kits for Minimbah and Penbank students and set up Drawing and Glazing workshops for Senior Campus. You will gain experience working in the Elisabeth Murdoch Gallery and how exhibition planning and events work. Make a difference with art, join the creators and makers. Ready for a new Woodleigh Activity that uses your lungs and your hands? Welcome to CLAYraoke — where karaoke meets clay in a feelgood creative mash-up. Why sing? From your brain to your heart, singing gives a full-body boost. When singing the exhale releases feel-good endorphins, especially when we sing together. It’s connection, confidence and good vibes. (Say hello happiness!), Why clay? Working with clay is both physical and mindful. As you pinch, roll and sculpt, you practice fine motor skills, engage your imagination and make creative decisions in the moment. Inspired by the fun of Karaoke, CLAYraoke is an interactive creative experience to be held in AD2 where we will create a safe space for anyone to have a sing along, while we create functional and sculptural ceramic works. Together we can add our favourite tracks to a shared Spotify playlist. Creative Projects you can make include a Ceramic Phone Amplifier, Microphone Sculpture and Serving Platter/s. Whether you’re a singing superstar or a quiet clay enthusiast, this Activity is about connection, creativity and having a fun brain break. Join us for an exhilarating adventure at Bayside Rock Indoor Climbing and Adventure Centre in Carrum Downs! Whether you’re a seasoned climber or trying it out for the first time, our Indoor Climbing Activity offers a thrilling opportunity to conquer vertical challenges in a safe and supportive environment. Test your strength, agility, and problem-solving skills as you navigate a variety of routes suited to all experience levels. Our certified instructors will provide guidance and ensure your safety throughout the session. Parents please note: Rock-climbing is an adventure-based activity and has an increased element of risk and therefore the possibility of injury associated with being involved. Students will be involved in climbing a range of indoor rock faces at the centre whilst being belayed by other students.

Do you enjoy your running, or do you want to improve your general fitness? During this Activity you will learn how to train and prepare for the many running events throughout the year. Sessions will be at various locations depending on weather, date and type of training. Venues may include school XC course, Frankston Foreshore, Ballam and Baxter Parks, George Pentland Gardens, Langwarrin Fauna and Flora Park, Bunarrong Reserve, Jubilee Park and Seaford Foreshore. If you are interested in working on an individual program to develop muscular endurance, strength and improve your overall muscle tone and fitness then this is the Activity for you. Throughout the unit, you will develop your own personal fitness program focusing on your specific needs such as improved sporting performance, rehabilitation or specific fitness components. This Activity will take place in the fitness mezzanine at Woodleigh.

In Term 2, Woodleigh enters its top basketball teams in the Victorian College Championships (VCC). This Activity Unit is designed to prepare the Junior Boys and Intermediate Boys squads for the competition, developing their physical conditioning, technical skills, and tactical understanding. All sessions will be run by Woodleigh Basketball coaches. Students who would like to represent Woodleigh at VCC must attend the scheduled trials (please listen for morning notices) and participate in this Activity Unit. Off-campus sessions will be held at Somerville Recreation Centre.

Learn the skill of Archery from the staff at Eliza Archery, home of 2016 Olympic Medallist and past student, Alec Potts. You will learn the techniques of shooting developed by internationally renowned coach Ki-Sik Lee, who has brought scientific method to archery. All equipment is provided, and you will take part in different archery games and shoot many balloons along the way! Archery will be off campus at Eliza Archery, Seaford.

AFL Footy Tipping Predictor Y7-11

Last year the Swinburne University’s famous computer AFL tipster got a 66.2 % correct score in the 2025 AFL season. Can Woodleigh students try and equal or better that in this Activity? Do you like AFL and want to study all the match data from 2025? What’s more important, inside 50s or the number of disposals? … You decide!! In this Activity you will learn to program, build and create your own footy tipping version using software such as Excel for the 2026 season.

Lego Robot Wars

Do you have a love for music? Have you ever wanted to make your own instrumental song? You don’t need to be a trained musician to produce great music – you just need a keen ear and a love for rhythm and sounds. This is a unit for curious music lovers – you don’t need to be confident playing an instrument and you definitely don’t need to sing. We will explore how to use the entry-level software (such as GarageBand) as a tool to craft songs from start to finish. We will build beats from scratch, play with synthesisers, tinker with virtual instruments and explore effects such as delay, reverb and distortion. All styles of music are welcome! Come along and explore the wonderful world of digital music, you are only limited by your imagination. Final songs will be published on SoundCloud so you can show off your new skills.

Do you love tinkering and inventing with Lego? Does thinking about setting up a gearbox excite you? Do you want to build your skills working in a team to create a truly excellent robot that will conquer all your friends? Then this is the Activity for you! Join us for competitive and supportive deep dive into Lego mechanics, with students aiming to create the fastest cars and most robust battle bots. You’ll work in small teams to build your problem solving and engineering skills, while having a brick-load of fun. All levels and experiences are welcome, no previous Lego knowledge required: just a love of tinkering, inventing, and trying new things!
Unbusting Surfboards

The Woodleigh environment is a wonderful place for artistic photo opportunities. We will cover portraiture (people/animals), landscape, weather time lapse and fast-moving sporting action. You will learn about light, photo composition, examine what makes an excellent photo and how to best enhance your pictures using both camera techniques and computer software. We will start from the very basics and develop your skills in industry standard photo manipulation software programs; Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. You will need to supply your own digital camera, ideally an SLR, but a phone is a good fall back. Images may be submitted to some photography competitions.
Theatre Technology

This project invites students to explore the intersection of art, design, history, and surf culture through the restoration of vintage surfboards. Students will source and restore an old or damaged surfboard, research the surf culture and design trends from the era when the board was originally made, and create artwork that reflects that period’s style and spirit on the surfboard itself. The restored boards will be sealed for use ensuring they remain surfable pieces of functional art. Students would be required to bring an old surfboard that needs restoration.

Are you interested in learning the skills to be able to operate the various technical elements found within the entertainment industry? Join this Activity and you will discover what all the faders and dials on an audio console do, how the lights at a stadium concert work, or how to design and project image and animation for stadium screens. We will be running from the basic operations level and developing skills from there. Come and be creative with us and immerse yourself in the world of backstage theatre production.

This Activity will focus on postures, breathing, relaxation, movements and stretching whilst aiming to develop an awareness of the mind-body connection.You will have the opportunity to relax using self-chosen imagery, music and or muscle tensing. During the sessions we will explore other means of relaxation and mindfulness to enhance our wellbeing.

These Activities give students learning environments to research, discover and develop practical and creative ways to support our local, national and global community.
Brian Henderson Reserve

Are you interested in wildlife and the environment? Do you like being in the great outdoors? In this Activity you will support the day-to-day management of the Brian Henderson Reserve. You might feed the animals, contribute to enclosure set-up and maintenance, remove weeds, assist with pest animal control, plant new plants, collect bush foods, prepare animal meals, perform biodiversity surveys and carry out fence and track maintenance. Some tasks may also be performed outside the boundaries of the Reserve. If the weather is too hot/cold, we meet in the Science building and can tend to the animals kept there. Closed-toe sturdy shoes and long pants required. Water bottle recommended Sunsmart applies.
The Woodleigh Farm

The Woodleigh Farm is an excellent opportunity for students to immerse themselves in practical tasks and learn a variety of new skills. Students will complete a variety of hands-on seasonal tasks including growing plants, identify edible and non-edible plants, botanical drawing, farm weeding and maintenance, revegetating bush gardens, and simple garden landscaping projects. They will also learn about the digestive systems of sheep, goats and horses and help feed the animals during the afternoon sessions. Students will gain an understanding of where their food comes from and begin to understand sustainable agriculture and food production. Closed-toe sturdy shoes and long pants required.
