Selecting and Balloting for an Activity
Throughout the school year, students are encouraged to choose Activities from at least three of the following categories: Academic Enrichment/Challenge; Leadership; Visual and Performing Arts; Sport and Physical Development; Health, Lifestyle and Practical Skills; Technology and ICT; and Community Partnerships.
Descriptions of each Activity are provided in the following pages. Please read the information carefully, noting any special requirements such as costs, equipment, or materials, and discuss your selections with your parents. If you require further details, contact the teacher responsible for the Activity or the Head of Activities, Mr Azzopardi.
When submitting your ballot, you should be willing to participate in any of your selected Activities. As you may be allocated to any one of your six choices, please consider your preferences carefully. Students who do not complete the initial online ballot by 10:30am on 13 November will be required to complete a restricted online ballot. This may limit available options, and if most Activities are already full, a further restricted paper ballot may be necessary. Students who do not submit a ballot by the final deadline will be assigned to an Activity.
Additional Information
Activities that incur a cost
Some Activities may incur a cost where individual coaching or special equipment is required. Costs are shown within this pamphlet and will be charged to the term’s account. If your child undertakes an Activity where there is a cost, you will be notified and approval will be required.
Activities Leaving School Grounds
Some Activities may run during lunchtime, particularly those where students are leaving the school grounds. Students need to consider this when balloting and be aware that they may need to take and eat their lunch on the journey from school or back to school. It is recommended that students participating in SIS Sports or students that have other commitments (VCE subject, Music etc) choose Activities that are on campus to avoid missing sessions that you may be charged for. Transport is via Budget Rosa Bus or Woodleigh HiAce Van driven by a Woodleigh Staff Member or via Driver Coastal Bus Lines.
Adventure-Based Activities
Some Activities are regarded as adventure-based. Being involved may have some higher elements of risk and the possibility of injury, both of a minor and serious nature. It is important that both students and parents are aware of this fact. It is also important that you have an understanding of the nature of the Activity, if you have any questions in regard to a specific Activity please contact the teacher in charge of the Activity or the Head of Activities, Mr Azzopardi. If a student undertakes an adventurebased Activity, approval may be required from a parent.
Appropriate, Sunsmart Clothing
In sporting Activities you will need your sports uniform and appropriate footwear. Students involved in outdoor Activities need to supply their own hat and sunscreen. Sunscreen is also available in each Homestead, the Sustainability Centre, with staff at outdoor venues and at the Gym in case you forget. Students must wear Activity appropriate clothing that is in line with the Woodleigh Dress Code.
Health and Safety
The health and safety of all in our community remains foremost in our planning. We are establishing ongoing protocols to ensure the physical safety of our community. For this reason some of our Activities will be adapted to provide reasonable precautions and a safe learning environment over the Unit. All Activities will abide by Government regulations.
Academic Enrichment
These Activities are designed to broaden, enhance, discover and challenge our students in a range of academic-style Activities.
Aviation
Y7-10
Aviation Activities usually run each unit depending on student interest. During these Activities, students will be based at Peninsula Aero Club, Stuart Road, Tyabb. Time will be spent learning aviation theory, relevant to the individual and group needs. Students will progress through their stages of training and practical flying lessons will be tailored to the individual. All instruction will be delivered by qualified instructors at the club and once students are on the premises, they are to comply with the rules and regulations set out by CASA; Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
Barista - Coffee for Others
Y10 Only
Embark on a journey into the world of espresso mastery with our Barista Activity! You will unlock the secrets of crafting the perfect coffee, mastering every step from bean to cup. Dive deep into the art of espresso extraction, steam and froth milk to velvety perfection, and even learn the intricate techniques of coffee art. With each session, you’ll hone your skills, gaining the confidence and expertise to create exceptional coffee creations that will delight friends and family.
Community Projects
Y9 Only
This Activity time is your chance to make real progress on your Community Project. Some projects can be bigger than others, therefore this Activity might suit those that want extra time and support. If you’re working in a group, make sure every member ballots for this Activity and is fully on board with the plan. If you have any questions email Ms Craven at ecraven@ woodleigh.vic.edu.au. Preference will be given to those that did not participate in thie Activity during Unit 3 Activities.
Engineering Task Master Y7-10
Engineering Task Master is a fun and interactive Activity where students will tackle a new engineering challenge each week. Challenges may involve civil, mechanical, or electronic engineering tasks that require students to design, build, test, and problem-solve either individually or in teams. Through creativity, teamwork, and hands-on learning, students will develop critical thinking and real-world engineering skills while competing to create the best solutions.
Japanese Anime, Art and Culture Y7-10
Come and join in this cultural experience where you will be transported to the mysterious world of Gion in Kyoto and experience some of the Geisha arts from times past such as Calligraphy and Origami. Learn basic Japanese etiquette and how to order a meal as well as exploring Japanese food. In addition, for one of the sessions there may be the opportunity to visit Robinson’s Bookshop in Frankston.
Year 11 Program Certificates
These Activities are designed to enable Year 11 students to gain a certification during Activity time. Students are also able to take advantage of other Activities on offer.
CPR and First Aid - Level 1 Cert Y11
During this Activity. you will gain your certificate in CPR and Level 1 First Aid. Students will gain the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergenvies using basic life support measures only.
Food Hygiene for Food Handlers Cert Y11
Most food serving establishments expect their staff to have undertaken some type of food safety training to ensure the safety of customers. This course provides the food safety basics to help increase students’ chances of gaining a job in these establishments. The course consists of theory sessions, a written test and cooking sessions in the kitchen to put theory into practice. At the end of the course students will receive a Food Hygiene for Food Handlers Certificate of Participation, a recognised certificate.
RSA and Hospitality Certificate Y11
During this course you will gain Liquor Licensing Victoria’s Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate. You will learn about the Liquor Industry, benefits of Responsible Service, Facts about Alcohol, Strategies for Responsible Service and Refusal of Service.
Visual and Performing Arts for the Community
These Activities encourage students to discover and develop practical and creative skills in Visual and Performing Arts for others and the community.
Digital Drawing
Y7-10
Want to learn how to draw digitally but don’t know where to start? This Activity introduces you to the basic tools and software for digital drawing. Experience using a drawing tablet and stylus to create a variety of beginner to advanced drawings. Use tools on Photoshop to apply colour, tone, and filters to enhance your artworks. Students experienced in digital drawing are welcome to bring their own devices to create their own artworks.
Junior Production Rehearsal
Come along and partake in Woodleigh School’s Junior Production. Across 2 units we will work with a script to put on a show to perform to a young audience. There are plenty of opportunities to sing, act and dance. If this sounds like something that would interest you, come down and audition in the Junior School Production.
Lucky Origami Jars

These Activities introduce and develop a range of practical skills in predictable and unpredictable environments.
Golf
Y7-11
Origami jars, often called Lucky Star Jars, symbolise good luck & support, and are given as gifts to loved ones. The act of making and gifting these jars is seen as a way to wish the recipient well and express care. Students learn a variety of origami folding techniques including cranes, stars, butterflies and foxes to create their own lucky jars that can be gifted to loved ones or sold to raise donations for RUOKDAY.
Practical Pottery and Tableware Y7-8
Come and design, make and decorate. Using specialist clay bodies to create a series of hand-built forms, your spatial and technical skills will be challenged. It’s not easy building bowls and plates, but you will learn techniques and get to experience a variety of textural surface applications. You will be able to test stoneware glazes which you will then apply to your forms.
Screenprint Your Own Merch
Y8-11
Learn the printmaking process of screen printing. Learn how to finely cut paper to make paper stencils and use alternative processes to print your own T Shirts, slogans, protest patches and merchandise. Print your voice and values using this cool technique to spread a message. You will need to supply your own merch to print on, T shirts, tote bags or any flat surface. Inks, tests patches and silkscreens all provided.
Woodleigh Ceramic Keep Cups Y10-11
Make your own hand-built take-away coffee cup for Woodleigh staff, students, parents, and friends to buy and use. This Activity will give you the skills to make a hand-built cup and learn glazing techniques to ensure your final product looks professional and ready to sell. Proceeds from the sales of the take-away coffee cups will go to a student selected Woodleigh Community Partnership. To finalise your production, you can keep your favourite cup.
Y7-10
Get ready to tee off and elevate your golf game to new heights! Join us for enriching sessions designed to enhance your skills and deepen your passion for golf. From novices to intermediate players, everyone is welcome to join us at Centenary Park Golf Club in Frankston, Ranfurlie Driving Range in Cranbourne or X-Golf Mornington. Golf clubs and balls are provided, but don’t forget to bring your own hat, glove, and suitable footwear. It’s time to swing into action and make your mark on the green!
Indoor Climbing Y7-10
Join us for an exhilarating adventure at Bayside Rock Indoor Climbing and Adventure Centre in Carrum Downs! Whether you’re a seasoned climber or trying it out for the first time, our Indoor Climbing Activity offers a thrilling opportunity to conquer vertical challenges in a safe and supportive environment. Test your strength, agility, and problemsolving skills as you navigate a variety of routes suited to all experience levels. Our certified instructors will provide guidance and ensure your safety throughout the session.
Soccer - Indoor and Outdoor
Y7-10
This is a fun-filled Activity where you can showcase your skills, make new friends, and enjoy the thrill of the game. Whether you prefer the fast pace of indoor play or the open field experience outside, there’s something for everyone. Perfect for all skill levels, this Activity is a great opportunity to learn new techniques, participate in friendly matches and have a blast kicking the ball around. Sessions will take place on Cruden Oval – with our new soccer goals and the Woodleigh Gym.
Sport Leadership Y9-10
This Activity is for those students who would like to develop their leadership skills and have a strong interest in Sport. Preference will be given to those students who have demonstrated a commitment to Woodleigh Sport, and/or elite sport previously. The sessions will include practical workshops, including a trip to Minimbah or Penbank aimed at improving your coaching, officiating and organisational skills. There will be some theoretical work towards gaining relevant accreditation. Students will also be involved in developing sport initiatives at school.
Tennis Y7-10
During this Activity you will be coached by a local professional tennis coach. Experienced and inexperienced players are welcome. You will develop your skills, rotate through a round robin series of matches and just play for fun. The following is essential: sports gear, flat soled sports shoes and hat. Health, Lifestyle and Practical Skills
These Activities provide a range of personal challenges and social experiences for the student to discover whilst learning and developing everyday skills.
Aromatherapy Creations
Y7-10
Discover the magic of aromatherapy as you craft your own collection of soothing, scented goodies! From lip balm and shampoo to soap, candles, and more – you’ll make a range of personalised products perfect to keep or gift. Learn how different scents can calm, energise, and uplift while having fun creating beautiful self-care items.
Circus Skills
Y7-10
This may be your first big chance to learn how to juggle, balance and even ride a unicycle. Balloon Modelling, Devil Sticks, Diablo and other activities will also be included. Sessions will take place at Woodleigh and most activities will be held outside. Sunsmart applies.
Cookies, Cakes and Crumbles
Learn to make tasty cookies, sumptuous cakes and mouth-watering crumbles. Using the latest techniques, equipment and best ingredients, enjoy the culinary trip with selected local and international recipes.
Knitting and Crochet
This Activity is suitable for anyone who would like to learn the basics of how to knit and/or crochet, or for those with existing skills to have the time to learn more stitches and work on individual projects. Enjoy learning new skills that promote wellbeing by reducing stress.

These Activities introduce, develop and further prepare our students in information and communication technology.
Advanced STEAM Club Y7-10
Calling all students with a thirst for knowledge and an interest in technology! Join this Activity unit focused on laser cutting, 3D printing, emerging technologies, robot building, coding, and programming. In this unique program, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the world of innovation and gain hands-on experience with various technologies. Discover the art of laser cutting and 3D printing, where you can turn your creative ideas into tangible objects. Dive into the realm of emerging technologies, robotics, coding, and programming. Create interactive experiences with LEGO Mindstorms, BBC Microbit, Makey Makey controllers and more! All experience levels are welcome, but a desire to learn and try new things is absolutely necessary!
Make Laser Cut Items Y7-10
Learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to bring your jewellery designs to life! Using the laser cutter, create two and threedimensional pieces from wood and acrylic. Embellish your work with paint, thread, wire, glitter and more. Design and produce packaging for your unique creations. All creative minds welcome! No previous experience required.
Making Music with Technology Y7-10

This is a great chance to be introduced to Mixed Martial Arts. A variety of different techniques will be demonstrated, and participants will then go on to practice and refine these skills working with a partner. Sessions will be highly active, so if you have lots of energy this is the Activity for you. This Activity is conducted by instructors from professional external venues. We strongly advise that students involved in this Activity should use a mouthguard as the potential for dental injury is reduced if an individually fitted mouthguard is worn.
Skating at the Shed
Y7-10
Skateboarding at ‘The Shed’ in Cranbourne will focus on basic skill development. The facilities include a range of ramps and sealed surfaces to practice basic skate moves. Cost includes entry fee and transport. We will provide you with all of the safety gear required including wrist guards, knee and elbow pads and a helmet. No gear – No skate! Students will need to bring their own skateboard.
Do you have a love for music? Have you ever wanted to make your own instrumental song? You don’t need to be a trained musician to produce great music – you just need a keen ear and a love for rhythm and sounds. This is a unit for curious music lovers – you don’t need to be confident playing an instrument and you definitely don’t need to sing. We will explore how to use the entry-level software (such as GarageBand) as a tool to craft songs from start to finish. We will build beats from scratch, play with synthesisers, tinker with virtual instruments and explore effects such as delay, reverb and distortion. All styles of music are welcome! Come along and explore the wonderful world of digital music, you are only limited by your imagination. Final songs will be published on SoundCloud so you can show off your new skills.
Photography, Lightroom and Photoshop Y7-10
The Woodleigh environment is a wonderful place for artistic photo opportunities. We will cover portraiture (people/animals), landscape, weather time lapse and fast-moving sporting action. You will learn about light, photo composition, examine what makes an excellent photo and how to best enhance your pictures using both camera techniques and computer software. We will start from the very basics and develop your skills in industry standard photo manipulation software programs; Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. You will need to supply your own digital camera, ideally an SLR, but a phone is a good fall back. Images may be submitted to some photography competitions.
Community Partnerships
These Activities give students learning environments to research, discover and develop practical and creative ways to support our local, national and global community.
Brian Henderson Reserve Y7-10
Are you interested in wildlife and the environment? Do you like being in the great outdoors? In this Activity you will support the day-to-day management of the Brian Henderson Reserve. You might feed the animals, contribute to enclosure set-up and maintenance, remove weeds, assist with pest animal control, plant new plants, collect bush foods, prepare animal meals, perform biodiversity surveys and carry out fence and track maintenance. We have started a new boardwalk in the East –plenty of building to be done. Some tasks may also be performed outside the boundaries of the Reserve. If the weather is too hot/cold, we meet in the Science building and can tend to the animals kept there. Closed-toe sturdy shoes and long pants required. Water bottle recommended. Sunsmart applies.
Environmental Clean-up and Games Y7-10
We will work within the school grounds and visit local Community areas. During the session, we will spend some time cleaning up the environment and then engage in some light exercise or play some fun games. Students will be provided with gloves. Sports uniform required. Sunsmart applies.
Helping out on the Peninsula Y7-10
Step into the heart of your community with Helping Out on the Peninsula – a rewarding journey of kindness, connection, and compassion. Bring warmth and joy to Peninsula Grange Aged Care as you prepare sweet treats and heartfelt cards. Engage with elderly residents through games, reading, and conversation—sharing stories and discovering the rich lives and memories of those who came before us. This hands-on Activity builds empathy, leadership, and social connection. You will leave each visit having made a real difference.w
LGBTQIA+ Pride Group
Y7-10
In this Activity, students will engage in creating, discussing, making, watching and listening to content from LGBTQIA+ culture and contemporary issues, popular culture, and Queer history. These sessions will be supported by speakers, films and TV and is for all students, LGBTQIA+ and allies.
The Woodleigh Farm
Y7-10
This Activity unit will be spent around the Woodleigh Farm. There will be many different tasks to be performed and lots of new skills to learn from general animal husbandry, working with the various animals at the farm and preparing the vegetable gardens for winter vegies. Those students interested in building can put together equipment for the goats to play and climb on or to provide enrichment for the chickens.
