21 ANNUAL CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL ST

It has been an incredible 27th Season of presenting the very best concerts on tour as well as fine arts entertainment. We have been proud to host 15 sold out shows so far this year, including most recently the Dixie Chicks, Hank Williams Jr. with Chris Stapleton and Heart with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and Cheap Trick.

Children’s Festival is back for the 21st time in November. This year, we are pleased to offer some popular programming on the Main Stage including the Disney Junior sensation, Imagination Movers.

If you are a part of an organization that needs service hours, I encourage you to look into volunteering for this event. It takes nearly 500 volunteers to produce Children’s Festival and we sincerely appreciate each one of them. More details can be found on the next page.

Action does not slow down during our off-season as we undergo a major construction project. Plans include replacements of our VIP Club and operation building, new canopies at the concessions and entrance gates as well as a refresh to the dressing rooms. I would like to thank our Pavilion Board for their support of this endeavor.

Children are invited to come out and play as The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is transformed into a giant playground filled with fun and adventure. The 21st Annual Children’s Festival, presented

I would like to congratulate our marketing department for being recognized as a finalist for the American Marketing Association Houston’s Marketer of the Year award in the category of venues and parks. The awards program recognizes exceptional marketing by Houston area companies and organizations.

Experiment with science-related activities in the South Plaza where you can visit with Janet’s Planet to learn about the solar system and create your own lunar lander. Or if you have a little Picasso, The Villager’s Arts Alley might be for you. Take a walk to the Anadarko Adventure Zone and get your sports on with some of Houston’s hometown teams!

There are still events to enjoy this season as found in this issue of CenterStage. Come out, bring the family and enjoy this world class venue. There is truly something for everyone to enjoy at The Pavilion.

If your child has been struck by a bolt of energy, then stop by the Texas Children’s Hospital Healthy KidZone Tent or the Activity Center in the new Pavilion Event Center for hands-on activities and games.

Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO LIVE will take the Main Stage where you’ll meet and interact with an eye-popping collection of amazingly life-like dinosaurs and other creatures that will thrill and entertain kids and adults! Performances on Saturday ONLY at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Performers and characters will be in the meet & greet tent in the South Plaza at various times throughout the day for photos and fun.

PAVILION HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF ARTS IN EDUCATION As part of The Pavilion’s educational outreach, two high schools from Conroe ISD had performance opportunities at the Houston Symphony concert at The Pavilion on September 15. The Conroe High School Orchestra participated in the evening’s concert with the Houston Symphony, playing authentic Peruvian instruments. Additionally, during pre-concert activities guests had the pleasure of hearing musical selections from the Oak Ridge High School Orchestra.

The performances culminated during National Arts in Education Week, September 11-17, 2016. The arts are an essential part of a complete education, no matter if it happens in the home, school or community.

Students of all ages—from kindergarten to college to creative aging programs—benefit from artistic learning, innovative thinking and creativity. Celebrating National Arts in Education Week is a way to recognize this impact and share the message with friends, family, and communities.

Through the grant with ExxonMobil, she was able to work with the development team to create marketing materials for The Pavilion’s Educational Outreach programs.

ROCKIN’ FIVE DECADES OF CONCERTS

The Pavilion partners with Live Nation to bring some of the hottest touring acts to the Main Stage for a concert experience like no other. Randy McElrath, senior vice president of booking for Live Nation has been an integral part of the rise in success and growth The Pavilion has seen, but at the end of the year he will hang his cap and retire after nearly five decades in the business.

For someone with a resume like Randy, the stories and memories flow like the lyrics at a Rolling Stones show.

After making a name for himself as a defensive end at Dartmouth College and a stint in the Peace Corps, Randy landed in Milwaukee in the early 1970s teaching school and dabbling as a stage manager on the weekends for various tours that would come through town. It didn’t take long for him to realize that weekend job was the path to his true calling. That’s when Randy went into business for himself booking shows for artists like The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and Supertramp to (literally) only name a few. Randy was also there for the now infamous bomb scare before Bruce Springsteen’s concert at Milwaukee’s Uptown Theatre in 1975.

Pavilion truly has something for everyone,” he said. “Plus, when you have a staff that has stayed together as long as they have at The Pavilion, they really know what the customer wants and how to get there.”

A highlight in Randy’s career was reuniting at Live Nation with a former colleague, Bob Roux, now co-president of North America concerts for Live Nation. “He is growing really fast and watching his success has really been one of the proudest moments for me,” said Randy.

A lot has changed since the early days, artist fees used to range between $2,500 and for the big timers, a whopping $7,500.

These days, on average artist fees topple near $500,000. Once upon a time, contracts were confirmed via telegram compared to nowadays, through email. But one thing that has remained constant - the hours in a day. “This job has always been a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week job,” said Randy. “It’s time to make more time in my day to focus on family and really living.”

“I had originally planned to go to law school,” he reminisced. “But serendipity found me and I was having too much fun to give it up.”

After several changes of companies, Randy landed at Live Nation in 1999 which brought him to the doorsteps of The Pavilion.

“Randy has been in the business for longer than most,” said Jerry MacDonald, president & CEO for The Pavilion. “This retirement is bittersweet; his knowledge, expertise and friendship will be missed by all our staff at The Pavilion.”

Randy believes the unique structure of The Pavilion and full spectrum of offerings has most undoubtedly led to the success of the venue. “From ballet, country, hard rock and even comedy, The

“Be confident in yourself and make solid decisions, you can do it.”

Hello Partners, I cannot believe it’s already October!

For some, this signifies the start of fall and some much needed relief from the sizzling Texas heat. For others, it may be the start of football games and tailgating, but for Partners, we know October and November are still very busy months for us here at The Pavilion. If you know anyone interested in becoming a Partner, we are actively recruiting to finish out the year.

On Thursday, October 20th we will hold our annual Pre-Concert Dinner and Fundraiser prior to the Luke Bryan “Kill the Lights” concert featuring Little Big Town and Dustin Lynch. The Partners are very excited about this event because all proceeds raised will benefit The Pavilion Educational Outreach Programs such as Fine Arts Education Day, Musical Scores and Music in Motion. These programs give children of all ages in our community and the surrounding areas a chance to experience and learn about music and the arts all while having fun. The Pavilion Partners Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser - October 20

“Kick the Dust Up” and start your weekend early at The Pavilion Partners Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser Thursday, October 20 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The event will take place prior to the Luke Bryan, Little Big Town & Dustin Lynch concert.

The Pavilion’s Mission provides an opportunity to support young artists as they pursue college degrees in the arts through The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship program. Scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors based on talent and academic performance within the categories of dance, instrumental music, theater arts, visual/graphic arts and vocal music.

An assortment of appetizers will be provided by Tommy Bahama, followed by dinner catered by Grotto Ristorante & desserts from Fleming’s. Beer is included courtesy of Bud Light/Silver Eagle Distributors. Wine and margaritas will also be available.

Unique games and exclusive auction packages will be offered including an authenticated Garth Brooks autographed guitar. Money raised from the event benefits The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs. Last year’s Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser raised nearly $27,000 for these efforts.

The application process consists of student response essays, transcript and test score evaluation as well as a teacher or instructor recommendation letters. Scholarship applications will be available online beginning November 1.

“Scholarships for students in the arts are unbelievably important. They allow us to create a strong and stable foundation as artists,” said Audrey Wilson, past Partners scholarship recipient. “I know I would not be where I am now had I not received this scholarship throughout my college career.”

PAVILION PROJECT

IT’S HAMMER TIME The Pavilion Undergoes Construction Project In May 2016, The Pavilion Board of Directors unanimously approved a major construction plan that will touch nearly every part of the venue. The projects include a newly constructed VIP Club and operations building, new canopies at the concessions and entrance gates as well as a refresh to the dressing rooms.

The new VIP club will replace the original structure and boast two floors of expansive seating, a catering kitchen and an outdoor patio overlooking the North Plaza. Additionally, the new operations building will provide more office and storage space for Pavilion staff. Fresh and modern canopies will become the face of The Pavilion as guests enter the venue.

“This construction plan is exciting for our team as it impacts some piece of the entire venue,” says Jeff Young, vice president of operations for The Pavilion. “The updates will modernize The Pavilion and provide an exceptional backdrop for future concerts and events.”
