Star-Spangled Salute 1 For the Classical Lovers

Celebrate America’s birthday with a bang at the annual Star-Spangled Salute July 3. This free Independence Eve spectacular, which has been a tradition at The Pavilion for 24 years, features the Houston Symphony in a selection of patriotic favorites, led by Principal Pops Conductor Michael Krajewski. The concert is presented by The Woodlands Development Company. Tickets are not required. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.

25 Seasons of Spectacular

Wave your flag to the tune of traditional favorites including “Fanfare and Star-Spangled Banner,” “The Liberty Bell,” “The Cowboys Overture,” “Sweet Caroline,” “Service Medley,” and of course, Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with cannons blasting from the hill. Serving as a special guest at the concert, creating two special pieces of art, is Dan Dunn with his unique PAINTJAM performance. Dunn received widespread acclaim after his PAINTJAM video went viral on YouTube. PAINTJAM became the 45th most viewed video on YouTube and was receiving 85,000 views per hour.

Michael Cavanaugh Sings The Songs of Billy Joel The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion welcomes Broadway’s “Piano Man,” hit star of the Tony award-winning musical “Movin’ Out” at The Songs of Billy Joel with Michael Cavanaugh July 24 at 8 p.m. The concert features the Houston Symphony. Tickets are $15 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of Huntsman and Insperity. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 7 p.m.

Cavanaugh is a charismatic performer, musician and recording artist, made famous in Joel’s hit Broadway musical “MOVIN’ OUT.” He was hand picked by Joel for the title role for the musical and received a Tony and Grammy nomination. Cavanaugh appeared in the show for three years and over 12,000 performances. In October 2008, he released his first CD titled “In Color”. In June, 2010, he debuted his second symphony show entitled “Michael Cavanaugh: The Songs of Elton John and more” and then debuted his third symphony show “Singers and Songwriters: the music of Paul Simon, Neil Diamond and James Taylor” in 2012.

Dream Comes True for Intern 6

The concert showcases Ravel’s Une barque sur l’océan from “Miroirs,” Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 2 as well as Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9. The concert features the 2014 Ima Hogg Young Artist Competition winner, Lin Ma. Ma plays the clarinet and is currently pursuing his Artist Diploma at Rice University. He earned a bachelor of music degree from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and received instruction from Yehuda Gilad at Idyllwild Arts Academy and Yuanfu Huang at The Middle School at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Named to honor the memory of Miss Ima Hogg, a co-founder of the Houston Symphony, this prestigious competition is open to young musicians who play standard orchestral instruments or piano. Through the support of the Houston Symphony League since 1976, this competition provides performance opportunities for aspiring musicians ages 13-30.

Stuart Chafetz conducts the symphony with Cavanaugh singing iconic songs including “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” “Goodnight Saigon,” “Uptown Girl,” “Piano Man,” “New York State of Mind” and “Just the Way You Are.” Also hear the music of Elton John and The Who as well as an original song by Cavanaugh.

The Star-Spangled Salute kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with pre-concert activities for the whole family in the North and South Plazas. Enjoy patriotic music performed by The Woodlands Show Chorus and interact with Betsy Ross, Uncle Sam and a living Statue of Liberty, as well as Puffy Pine Cone. Also enjoy activities by The Pavilion Partners, Texas Children’s Hospital, Fidelity Investments, Century 21 Realty Partners, Renewal by Andersen, Woodforest National Bank, Radio Disney Road Crew and more. Guests also receive American flags and other patriotic souvenirs at the event.
